Cheaters nightclub will soon be just a memory

Workshops planned to help seniors with financial scams

Project update: Assisted Living facility planned for Granada Boulevard and developers are seeking to plat neighborhoods.

Residents can also apply for personal consultations. HELP FOR SENIORS

WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Cheaters Night Club, the defunct, pink nightclub on North U.S. 1 near Interstate 95, will soon become an unpleasant memory for many city officials and business people in the area. A 9,100-square-foot Dollar General store will be constructed at the site, 1545 N. U.S. 1, likely in the near future. Steve Spraker, senior planner for the city, said the owners have submitted a building plan and he expects a demolition plan for the old night club to be submitted soon “I wouldn’t be surprised to see construction start in a month,” he said. When the Cheaters club was constructed, it caused the concern of local business people and city officials because of its location at the gateway to the city. After the site was annexed into the city, the club made an agreement with the city that employees would no longer perform dances, and the business later shut down. ASSISTED LIVING COMING

Coming to the southwest corner of Knightsbridge Crossing Drive and West Granada Boulevard is a 123-unit assisted living facility, Antares of Ormond Beach. The

address of the now-wooded site is 720 W. Granada Blvd. There were neighborhood meetings on the development, but because it conformed to land use and zoning, no City Commission approval was required. The developer has not provided the city with a timeline for site development and building construction.

The developer has plans to plat Phase Two of River Oaks, shown looking east.

“I can tell you financial scams with the elderly go largely unreported for a variety of reasons.”

RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENTS

Other plans moving forward show signs of an improving residential market. Chelsea Place has plans to make infrastructure improvements for Phase 3, which has 65 singlefamily lots, and Vanacore Homes seeks to plat 54 lots in River Oaks Phase Two. Both projects will require City Commission approval. River Oaks is east of Interstate 95 and south of Airport Road.

BILL PARTINGTON, city commissioner

WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

City Commissioner Troy Kent told a story at a recent commission meeting of a senior woman who realized when she had been scammed. She received a call saying there were “questionable things” going on with her computer. The caller said if she didn’t pay some money, the authorities would come to arrest her. She knew it was a scam, because she didn’t own a computer. Kent related this story to stress the importance of upcoming workshops by Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida in a partnership with the city. Called Elder Smart, the first workshop will be 3:30 to 5 p.m. on June 2 in Conference Room 103, City Hall, 22 S. Beach St. The room is located just before the elevator on the first floor when entering City Hall from the breezeway by the library. Workshops will change each quarter. Topics will include identity theft, home improvement scams, predatory mortgage loans, foreclosure scams, lottery scams, utility insurance scams and credit repair services. “This is a topic that is very important to our senior residents in Ormond Beach,” said Commissioner Bill Partington. “Having been a prosecutor with some experience in elder exploitation, I

can tell you financial scams with the elderly go largely unreported for a variety of reasons. Some folks may be embarrassed about what happened. Some people may not realized what happened.” He said he once attended a seminar where tapes were played of phone calls to the elderly. “I can only tell you it’s chilling to listen to what happened,” he said. “It goes on to this very day. You’ve seen in the paper about the recent IRS scams. It doesn’t have to be the elderly, but frequently it can be.” He said the seminar will provide tips and techniques in avoiding the crimes. During each workshop, a specific legal topic will be presented by a pro bono attorney, and individuals will be able to ask questions. If attendees wish to meet oneon-one with a pro bono attorney regarding their specific situation, they will need to indicate so on the sign-in sheet upon their arrival, and they will be contacted at a later date.

T

he idea to celebrate American Craft Beer Week with a gastropub dining experience came from Mer Fawcett stalking Caroline Taft’s food adventures on Instagram. Her and her husband, Alan Fawcett, own Daytona Beach Brewing Company and always wanted to do some more experienced-based events — something Taft, owner of the food blog The Brazen Gourmand, could relate to. “I was really excited when Mer reached out because I’ve been wanting to make the blog more tangible,” Taft said. “I want to be able to translate stuff into experiences for other people, to tell them that there’s a story behind what you’re drinking and eating.” The Fawcetts, who live in Ormond Beach, paired up with Chef Mark Pullin of The Good Food Truck to create a dining and craft beer pairing experience. The event, held May 15, was sold out. Though Alan Fawcett featured some of his own beer, he also highlighted some guest beers. “Everyone is always asking me what kind of beer I like,” he said. “So these are my favorite beers from around the world, and getting to pair them up with food is a lot of fun.” The process of pairing food and beer is one of trial and error, Taft said. “Some of the obvious pairings that we originally thought,” she said, “once we actually tasted them, it was amazing how some of them are more pronounced, some are more muted. That shaped the menu. That’s why we were confident that people would have a more interesting experience than just eating and drinking things that taste good.” When it comes to pairing, people typically find flavors that are complimentary, like duck confit with rice noodles and fresh lime and one of Fawcett’s peach mango and limed infused brews. parties for his friends and family to give him feedback. Needless to say, he was very popular during that time. “I’d have 15 gallons of beer and invited 30 people over,” he smiled. “I can only drink so much.” Currently, McGrane has 1,500 gallons of 10 different kinds of beer he’ll be selling at Beachside Brew Pub, 1368 Ocean Shore Blvd., which he hopes to open soon. Everybody has a different palate.” “I think the point of it is showing the diversity of how much more there is than just drinking beer for the sake of it,” Taft said. “The whole motivation is really experiential dining and showing people that there’s so much more out there.”

ARE ‘BEER SNOBS’ REALLY SNOBBY?

FROM ARMY CAPTAIN TO FOOD BLOGGER

While the term may seem derogatory, a beer snob is simply someone who knows their beer, according to Ormond Brewing Co. President Justin Robinson. “They know a lot more about what they’re drinking, like the different styles and what kinds of hops are in them,” he said. In honor of all the local beer snobs — which Ormond Brewing has been consistently churning out —the company is releasing two new brews: an imperial-style IPA aged in a tequila barrel, and their seasonal blueberry wheat beer. That one is purple. When it comes to the taste palates of the average beer snob, one of the main distinctions is having a taste for hops. “We do a tropical IPA, and I have a friend who’s a beer snob say it wasn’t hoppy enough for him,” Robinson said. “It’s too hoppy for a lot of people, but beer snobs’ palates are accustomed to drinking really hoppy beers. It’s like people with hot sauce. It’s the same thing.”

Ormond Beach resident Caroline Taft joined the army six years ago in the spirit of adventure. She attended West Point United States Military Academy and rose through the ranks to captain. But from a young age, Taft had always been “culinarily curious,” and eventually channeled that energy into her blog The Brazen Gourmand, which documents her taste-based travels and cooking adventures. “I travel to eat,” she laughed. “I really think the best way to learn about a culture is to eat their food.” Some of the weirdest foods she’s tried included a deep-fried snake, and bushmeat. “The bushmeat was better than the snake,” she said. “That tasted like a garden hose.” Learn more about Taft and her food adventures by visiting thebrazengourmand.com.

Manatees are a constant in Nichole Dominguez’s backyard, which sits on a canal connected to the Tomoka River. She frequently saw a mother and calf floating up and down the river. While she and most of her

On May 9, the mother manatee was reported injured to the Volusia County Marine Stranding Team, who assisted in the rescue of her and her calf, who was too young to sustain life on its own. field, of the stranding team, the animals were taken to Seaworld’s Manatee Rescue Center that just opened in April. A press release from the center states that the 10-foot-2-inch manatee mother was experiencing severe buoyancy issues, which could negatively impact her health, eating patterns and the nursing of her calf. Due to the impact scar on the adult manatee’s back, it is presumed that she was struck by a watercraft. This caused her to suffer from a pneumothorax, meaning air was trapped inside her body cavity, so SeaWorld’s veterinary team placed the manatee in a wetsuit to stabilize her buoyancy issue, and the air was removed. Currently, the manatee is no longer in the wetsuit and has been seen swimming more upright. Although showing signs of progress, the care team still is keeping her on watch to ensure there are no broken bones or any other internal damage. The mother’s young calf came in weighing approximately 97 pounds and still nursing from its mother. The calf has not left its mother’s side and has continued to nurse consistently throughout the rehabilitation process. The calf has also begun to take an interest in eating solid foods, which is a sign of good health. There is no date set yet, but the end goal is to return the manatee and calf to the Tomoka River.

Teen killed by train was CHAMBER’S FIRST JOB a friend to everyone FAIR GOES TO WORK Robert Harris was killed by a train May 15, by the Tomoka River Trestle. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

This photo of Rob Harris was posted on Twitter by Allison Kennedy, who wrote, “Really going to miss seeing this smile. I love you Rob.”

A southbound train struck and killed 18-year-old Ormond Beach resident Robert Harris May 15 by the Tomoka River Trestle. According to a police report from the Ormond Beach Police, the train crew saw a person on the tracks and started sounding the whistle and applying the brakes. Harris got up, started running away from the train, fell down, regained his footing and continued running. The train then struck him. Kris and Dean Crider live near the train tracks on North U.S. 1, and they heard the incident. They stood in front of the tracks after the crash and directed people away. “We heard the boom,” Kris Crider said, “and the screeching.” According to the incident report, Harris’ friend Samuel Boatner found him on the tracks outside of River Grille restaurant. Boatner was supposed to pick him up after Harris got off work, but couldn’t located him once he arrived at the restaurant. Boatner told police he noticed the train slowing down, and that Harris had sent him a message on Snapchat showing him on a train trestle bridge.

After attempts to call him and talking to the restaurant staff — who said they hadn’t seen Harris since he clocked out — Boatner walked down the tracks and found Harris on the ground with one of the train crew members. His father, also named Robert Harris, said he and his wife, Patricia Best, saw him earlier that day working at River Grille. “She wanted to see him in a uniform,” Harris said. “We were so proud of him. He had a very kind heart. I could tell by how many friends he always had around that he was doing something right.” John Mirabile had Harris as a student in his film and English classes at Seabreeze High School and said he was intelligent, funny, pleasant and witty. “All the things you look for in a person,” he said. “There are some kids that can talk to everybody, and they’re rare. He was one of those kids. Everyone felt like they had a friend in him. That was his gift.” Harris was a junior at Seabreeze, and Mirabile said he enjoyed discussing different kinds of films with him. “He was the person you looked forward to seeing every day. As a teacher, he made coming to school a lot more fun.” His father agreed. “He was just the best you could ask for in a son.”

Fifteen prospective employers greeted job seekers the afternoon of May 17 at the first Ormond Chamber of Commerce Job Fair, held in the Nova Recreation Center on North Nova Road. Rick Fraser, executive director of the chamber, said the initiative began when he was working with S.R. Perrott, the beverage distributor on North U.S. 1, on finding employees. They decided to open the effort up to the community. The day turned out to be successful for the Perrott representatives, as they hired a person at the event as a warehouse worker. operator at the event to talk to applicants. Kahlin Grant, of Synergy Billing, said she was able to let people know about their 12-week program to teach billing and coding, funded by grants. Shannon Benes, of Parks Dermatology, said people seemed surprised to see a dermatologist at the event. But, she said, they have five offices with 60 employees and have jobs such as billing assistant and patient services. “I’ve collected quite a few resumes,” she said. “I think we had a good turnout.” About 60 applicants came through in the first two hours. Fraser said the event will be repeated next year. EMPLOYERS NEEDED

Also on hand was Aida Spina, executive director of Take This Job & Work It, a new initiative started this year by local businessman Dwight Selby to connect employers with people seeking summer jobs. Spina said she has students from nine area high schools and emphasizes that she has college students from 15 colleges, including the local colleges and others such as Florida State University and Rollins College. What she needs are companies to register. Contact Spina at 615-962-0521 or workitvolusia@gmail.com. Visit takethisjobandworkit.org.

A wild guess of what should go where I wouldn’t be surprised if Mayor Kelley offered me a job in city planning after this.

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

I love the potential of things. It’s the reason why there are three to six empty notebooks at my apartment at any given time. Blank canvases, an unscheduled calendar and empty wall space are all food to my wild imagination; I can’t help but daydream about the neverending possibilities. So while I’m doing my daily 15 minutes of waiting in traffic on Granada Boulevard, and I notice a vacant building, you can bet my mind is running.

So instead of keeping all these insane ideas to myself, I thought I’d share them with you. Maybe you’ll like them, maybe you’ll think I’m crazy, maybe it’ll spark a better idea than mine! Either way, hopefully this will start a conversation that will end with all of Ormond’s vacant buildings finally being filled. Disclaimer: I literally have no clue about codes or rules or anything about what kinds of businesses can or can’t exist in certain buildings. So if I’ve gotten something horribly wrong (which in my experience happens often), then let me know. In a nice way though, like, with a fruit basket. First on my list is 9 W. Granada Blvd., or formally known as the building with all the cool window paint, right before you cross the bridge. Now, because I’m such a big

fan of sitting and drinking coffee in places that aren’t my living room, my first instinct with every vacant building is always a coffee shop. This place in particular would be an excellent choice because it’s close enough to the river for a leisurely walk and its big, beautiful windows would make for excellent people-watching. Personally, I’d love for the place to feature some local coffee brewers, have one of those cool free libraries and be a hub for writers and creative types to gather and discuss how to make our community a more interesting place. Second on the watch list is the infamous old Food Lion at 101 E. Granada Blvd. Personally speaking, I would love to see a Target or a Barnes and Noble go there. Though this building is huge and could have the potential to store many different types of huge chains, I think the bigger benefit would be doing some-

Observer

thing to make East Granada Boulevard more of downtown, walking friendly community. So maybe we should tear down the thing all together and build a structure more similar to its neighboring Gaslamp Shoppes. Think of how many coffee shops we could put in there then! My last request is for something to fill the void at 71 W. Granada Blvd. The building was recently painted red, which for some reason made me think it was going to house a pizza shop. I welcome the next diner, whether everything is made out of celery or has a “Life On Mars” theme (both of which are real places). The more the merrier! Though I may not have solved anything with this column, I do hope that our city’s vacant spaces become filled with the kinds of businesses that bring people together because that’s what makes a community a community.

All three organizations receive flags throughout the year that have become too worn or damaged to be displayed, and the flags are retired in dignified ceremonies. An officer stopped a car because a tag number search showed the registration had been suspended. The driver said he did not have his driver’s license, but he was valid out of Ohio. He provided his name, but a computer check showed no driver’s license registered in Ohio. The suspect said he had his brother’s wallet because he grabbed the wrong one that morning. The wallet had an ID with a different first name and same last name. In a post-Miranda interview, he said he lied about his identity because his license was suspended, and he didn’t want to get arrested. His license had been suspended for failure to pay a traffic fine.

BY THE WAY, I’M A PROFESSIONAL 12:13 p.m. — First Block of Hickory Hills Circle Burglary. The victim said he met the suspect on Criagslist. They decided to meet for a date at the victim’s house, and they left to go to dinner. In the car, the suspect said she was a junky, addicted to heroin, and propositioned the suspect for sex. He told her he was alarmed that she was a prostitute and dropped her off. After returning home, he received a text message on his phone that was apparently not intended for him. The message said, “Pretend to be interested in the house and be safe. Do a good walk around and let me know what he has.” The next morning, the victim noticed that all six screens in the back and sides of the house had been removed from the windows. He also found a pry bar. No damage was done to the windows.

NO LICENSE NOW, OR EVER 9:16 a.m. — 800 Block of South Nova Road No Valid Driver’s License. The suspect’s car was pulled over because the passenger was seen not wearing a seat belt. The officer asked the driver if he had his license, and he said he did not have a license and had never been issued one in his lifetime. He said he was only driving his friend somewhere and does not drive all the time. A computer search showed that the driver had a criminal history in seven states, and he was arrested.

evin Treur, head coach for the Red Sox 12U team, said that assistant coach James Vollinger deemed them as a bunch of overachievers. After winning just three games throughout the season, they went on to win the Ormond Beach Youth Baseball and Softball Association, Bronco League championship 13-4 over the Brewers Friday, May 13, at Nova Community Park. “It just all came together for us,” Treur said. “We only went through two pitchers during the game. They didn’t pitch fast, but they threw strikes, and, when the Brewers hit, our defense made plays.” The Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the majority of their runs came in the last three innings, as they were frequently walked and then stole bases to reach home plate. “One of the nice things about this team,” Truer said, “is that we didn’t have a bunch of competitive baseball team, but we just kept working hard, and they kept getting better.” — JEFF DAWSEY

The Red Sox won only five games but just enough to win the league title.

PROUD TO BE NO. 2 After losing by nine runs, the Brewers enthusiastically ran to slap hands with the Red Sox, and, after getting their trophies, they pumped them in the air as they shouted “Second place! Second place!” They never gave up, and they proudly walked off the fields with their heads, and trophies, held high.

hat a memorable sports year! I am proud to have covered such studentathletes, who helped produce a year of extroardinary content. Who can forget the historic football season Matanzas put forth, eight games—six straight? The Pirates had not finished with a winning record in any of their previous seasons. Then, the Lady Pirates pulled off a historic weightlifting season, winning the conference, district and region championships. After getting to the Final Four for the first time in the program’s history, Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs won over 20 games before losing its first and went 24-2 on the season. Mainland’s Abagaile Killian stepped on the mound and gave her opponents fits, averaging over 10 strike outs per contest throughout the season. And, the Lady Bucs’ flag football team won 13 straight games and faithfully held the No. 1 ranking in 1A, which was, by far, their highest ranking ever. Also, the girls’ and boys’ track teams made historic strides this year. The girls finished as district runners-up for the first time in history, and the boys repeated as district champions and then won their first regional title. The Lady Sandcrabs lost their undefeated season but avenged that shutout loss against Mainland for another district championship. Also, the girls’ soccer team won all year before nearly advancing to the Elite Eight with such a young team. And then there were the champions. Adrian Killins’ repeated as 200-meter state champion; Justin Pacifico avenged last year’s 800 with his title run; Kendrick Thomas showed resilience to claim FPC’s first weightlifting title in years, and then Mike Astrologo’s miraculous lift added a second state title for FPC; Viktor Goth cruised to two state swimming titles for Seabreeze. The girls at Seabreeze also won the 4x400 relay, and Father Lopez boys won the cross country state title. I want to thank them for all of these memorable moments and and for helping me produce such great content. On many occasions, players shared personal stories or pointed me to teammates with inspiring stories to write about. So they’ve left marks in more ways than you know, and I’m truly thankful for an incredible year. Thanks for the memories!

SEABREEZE CLASS OF 1966

50 years later Former classmates from Seabreeze High School will reunite this weekend. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Carl Persis was a former mayor and principal and is currently running for Volusia County School Board District 4. He said he’s excited to see his classmates again, especially the ones he hasn’t seen since graduation.

CLASS OF ’66 REUNION PLANNING COMMITTEE Harvey Newton, Susan Cobb Clayton, Larry Frank, Linda McCutchen Hucks, Dr. Chuck Duva, Max Zahn, Bonnie Brinker Thompson, Ryan Anderson Adams, Kathy Odiorne Hanson, Helen Williams Hebert, Carl Persis, Susan Balch Durrance, Chris Deross Robbins, Bill Sacks, Albert Teebagy, Wyc Woodfin, John Patrick, Joan Knowles Powell, Vicki Bernard George and Skip Dixon

Like many former students of the class of 1966, Larry Frank has many memories of his time at Seabreeze High School — some good, some bad. “I still have nightmares about not being able to find my locker,” he laughed as he walked through the halls 50 years later. A member of the Class of ’66 Reunion Planning Committee, Frank did his due diligence in tracking down all his former classmates from Seabreeze, and even a little further back. John Patrick and Harvey Newton were just two of a larger group that also attended Merricourt Kindergarten and Play School with Frank back in 1954. Though they didn’t hang out much during high school, they’ve enjoyed reconnecting as adults. “I had a good time in school,” Newton said. “I didn’t excel as a student by any means, but I managed to graduate.”

“We’re survivors,” chimed in Frank. “We showed up. That’s half the battle.” Former principal and Ormond Beach mayor Carl Persis is also on the committee, and says his job is to create a playlist of tunes from the 1960s for the party. He said his favorite memories are winning a contest to see the Beatles perform on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” and having to go with his football coach to bring the surfers who skipped class back in from the beach. “They would be in class with their hair all wet, and I just thought it was so funny,” he said. “Seabreeze was just great.”

An Olympic weightlifting coach, Harvey Newton always did a lot of athletics in high school. He always had a strong affiliation with Seabreeze and said he really enjoyed his time there.

Larry Frank was really quiet in school and kind of kept to himself. Though he wasn’t on any athletic teams, he loved going to the games and being a spectator.

John Patrick became a psychologist, and is now a wood turner. However in school, he never got to go to shop class.

Lighting the way to more connected community Lewis and Angela Heaster using their foundation to bridge the gap between local people in need and people who want to help. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

When Malka Altman was going through chemotherapy, she often told her family and friends about the many obstacles she saw other cancer patients facing and how she wanted to help them. After she died in 2014, longtime friend Angela Heaster decided she was going to put Altman’s desire to serve into action with Light the Way. The idea went into motion after a conversation Heaster had with Malka Altman’s son Josh and cancer survivor Sheryl Selby, who also went through chemotherapy with Malka Altman. “They were concerned about the other patients,” Heaster said. “Even with good insurance and support it’s still a struggle.” Though Angela Heaster and her husband, Lewis Heaster, have been serving local charities for over 15 years through the Heaster Family Foundation, the couple wanted to do something to bring local cancer patients together with local

Heaster’s team has told her that top needs are healthy meals, transportation and help with housekeeping. “Some patients will go for a full day of chemo and then have to wait two hours for the Votran,” she said. 120 years on the river Most yacht club members do not own a yacht. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

“I call this my waterfront property,” said Sheri McQuarrie, indicating the boat parked in a slip at Halifax River Yacht Club. She said she’s “landlocked” where she lives on the mainland in Ormond Beach, but the boat gives her access to the water. “It’s my floating condo,” she said. McQuarrie is actually in the minority at the yacht club, located just south of Orange Avenue at 331 S. Beach St., Daytona Beach. Most of the 500 members do not own boats. “It’s a social and networking club,” said Julie Borre, membership director, at the 120th Anniversary Celebration on May 14, where members gathered for a social hour and dinner. The event included a Sundowner ceremony, a patriotic flaglowering with officers in uniform and accompanying cannon fire. Borre said families enjoy the club, which has a swimming pool with tiki bar, because there are activities for all ages, including dances, holiday parties, barbecues and pickleball for adults; and kayaking, sailing and special events for the kids.

There’s also a business aspect to the club. Members can have meetings of their own organization in one of the private rooms. And, being a yacht club, there are many nautical events, such as the May 27 Gulfstreamer, a sailboat race to Charleston. There are boat excursions to other yacht clubs and races for avid sailors throughout the year. The club brochure says nonboaters in the club often catch a ride with other members. LEARNING TO SAIL

McQuarrie, wife of Past Commodore Mike, called the youth sailing club “amazing.” “Chelsea started when she was five,” she said. “I didn’t want to make her nervous by watching, but I looked out later and saw her in a boat by herself, sailing.” The club also offers a youth sailing camp open to the public each summer for ages 8 to 16. Also from Ormond Beach are present Commodore Glen Wagner and his wife, the first lady, Kelly Wagner. “The club is an amazing place,” Kelly Wagner said. “When we moved down here I didn’t have a friend. Now I have hundreds of friends. I never had so many in my life.” The Wagners currently have a 55-foot engine-driven yacht that has four state rooms. “This boat will go anywhere,” Glen Wagner said. “We hit eightfoot waves and just put the throttle up and went through them.” But, he mentions he’s had half a dozen boats. “A boater is always thinking about his next boat,” he said.

DOCK IN ORMOND BEACH?

The HRYC is a member of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, so they accommodate visitors from other clubs. Of their 39 slips, three are open for guests. One recent visitor from Fort Lauderdale, Mike Efford, said he sometimes anchors in the river but also occasionally docks. Asked if people would stop at a dock in Ormond Beach, he said yes, especially if ads were placed in boat publications. Not only would the dock attract longrange travelers, but he believes boaters would travel from Daytona Beach or other nearby cities

for lunch. The city of Ormond Beach is currently applying for grants to possibly build a dock at Cassin Park for day visits.

OLDEST YACHT CLUB The Halifax River Yacht Club was started by 13 townsmen in 1896 who raced their single-masted sailboats on the river. The current, two-story HRYC building was built in 2007. The original building was never closed during construction, so the HRYC is the oldest, continuously operating, yacht club on the East Coast in the same location. Visit hryc.com.

Anderson Price Building turns 100 Construction for the Anderson Price Building started in 1912. LISA WOLFE STAFF WRITER

Members of the Village Improvement Association in Ormond Beach celebrated the 100th year of operation of the Anderson Price Building. The building, a great example of 20th century architecture, was named in honor of John Anderson and Joseph Price. In January 1898 a group of women residents met at the Ormond Beach Union Church to form an organization called the Village Improvement Association. Their goals were to promote neatness and order in the village of Ormond Beach, and to do whatever may be needed to improve and beautify the town as their place of residence and keep it in a healthful condition. In 1912 construction on the Anderson Price Building began after the VIA successfully raised

$8,000. The building was to be used as a library and meeting place for the VIA and other community groups. Construction was completed 100 years ago in 1916. In 1958, its name changed to the Ormond Beach Woman’s Club, at which time a kitchen and tea room

were added. The library remained in the building until 1969, when it was then moved to its current location at the city. The Anderson Price Building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Mayor Kelley proclaimed May 15, 2016, as a day to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Anderson Price Memorial Building. The building still stands at 42 N. Beach St.

DID YOU KNOW?

Brothers Hal and Bill Butts had many painting sessions for a painting they posed in with their mother 77 years ago. Once their mother died, Hal didn’t have anywhere to hang the painting because it was too big. He was asked if he would like to donate the painting to the Anderson Price Building, which he did. The painting was hung in a hallway for some time before being moved to the boardroom, once building renovations started a few years ago. This past week, Hal talked his brother into attending the birthday celebration, in order to have their photo taken in front of the painting 77 years after it was completed. Hal would have been 6 years old and Bill was 4 when the painting was completed by Unberto Romano. When the young boys weren’t posing, they would go outside and try to bang nails into the tires of Romano’s car, but it never worked, Bill said.

Ormond Beach Woman’s Club celebrates 125th birthday Club President Beverly Ferrell says they do more than just play bridge. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

First founded in 1891, the Ormond Beach Woman’s Club was originally called the Ormond Village Improvement Association. Its members did include men —until they kicked them out not even a year later. In 125 years, the club has maintained its mission to “promote neatness and order in the village” through fundraisers that support organizations like the Great Kids Explorer Club and Halifax Urban Ministries. At their anniversary party May

13, President Beverly Ferrell honored a few select members for their contributions, though all 20 of them put in a great deal of effort. “All of you are special,” she said at the podium, “and that’s about the most I can say without crying.” Though club membership has declined over the past few years due to their older demographic, Ferrell and her gang don’t plan on stopping any time soon. “It’s gone on for so long,” she said. “We just feel an obligation that it needs to go on as long as it possibly can.”

President Beverly Ferrell honored Frances Bruno, Jean Crawford and Ruth Matheny for their contributions to the club.
