Retired Navy Cpt. Mark Leary was thinking about two close friends at the Memorial Day Remembrance Service at Rockefeller Gardens on May 25. They had paid the ultimate sacrifice in Operation Desert Storm. He had known them since flight school, and their families had become friends. He was on a ship when he learned that their helicopter had crashed into the sea. “I think about them every Memorial Day,” he said. Leary was the guest speaker at the event. He told the crowd that the question he is most often asked is if there are enough good men and women in today’s all-volunteer army to face the nation’s challenges. “Let me put your mind at rest,” he said. “They are more educated, just as committed, and just as good as any men and women who ever served.” He said they uphold the legacy and serve with honor and courage. Memorial Day is a day to honor those who have died while serving in the military, and it was marked with a presentation of colors, a fly-by, music, marching units and more. Special guests for the Laying of the Wreath were World War II veterans Robert Doran and John

Boswell served on carriers in the Pacific and was aboard the USS Missouri, where he witnessed Japan’s official surrender. Doran saw the flag being raised on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima and left the service after 16 years as a captain. Robertson served for 30 years, including 30 continuous months as allied forces captured islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Residents and members from Love Whole Foods joined Dr. Joseph Mercola May 23 to demonstrate their concern about genetically modified foods, especially those produced by Monsanto as a leader in the bio-tech industry. In the worldwide event, March Against Monsanto, the residents standing at the corner of Granada Boulevard and Beach Street held a rally simultaneously with rallies were also held in Orlando, Gainsville, Tampa and Miami. The 25 concerned citizens in Ormond Beach held placards and discussions with drivers who were waiting for the lights to change. According to Love Whole Foods owner Mitchell Booth, horns honking and thumbs up comprised the overwhelming response to their afternoon efforts in the Memorial Day weekend sun. “There were a lot of mothers with their children,” Booth said. “It was nice to see that.” The group’s message was simple: Create legislation mandating compulsory labeling of food products that contain GMOs, just as we already mandate peanut ingredients. According to the website of the organization, Label GMOs, the safety of genetically engineered foods for human consumption is not adequately tested like new drugs are. There have been no long-term studies conducted on GMO safety. “The issue of GM food safety was first discussed at a meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Health Organization and biotech representatives in 1990,” the website stated. “The ‘substantial equivalence’ concept was proposed in early 1996. The adoption of the concept of substantial equivalence allowed permission to market and sell new foods without any safety or toxicology tests as long as they were not too different in chemical composition to foods already on the market.” A second goal of the protest was to raise awareness of Monsanto’s pesticide glyphosate, also known as RoundUp. This pesticide has now permeated conventionally grown agriculture. The World Health Organization, as well as several countries, have now classified RoundUp as a likely human carcinogen. The attempted use of stolen credit cards at Mower Depot, 290 Wilmette Ave., in which several suspects from South Florida were arrested, was a continuing topic as awards were presented in different categories. Those receiving awards included store owner Scott Edwards, who called police after becoming suspicious, and Juanita Garza, records clerk, who translated so the officers could interview the suspects. After the suspects were arrested, a team effort was required in locating a U-Haul at a motel where stolen merchandise was stored, processing the evidence and identifying the suspects. “We got a lot of very bad individuals off the street,” Osterkamp said. In closing remarks, the chief recognized officers who are retiring this year, and mentioned that he plans to retire next year.

In May of last year, they found shattered glass and blood outside a home, but the female resident clamed nothing was wrong. After obtaining a search warrant, the officers discovered children living in dangerous conditions. They seized 25 marijuana plants, about 105 grams of harvested marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Citing physical evidence, Ormond Beach police detectives have called the May 17 deaths of Heather Rasumoff, 44, and Gary Smith, 56, a murder/suicide. An autopsy report is still pending. Police and ambulance were dispatched to the townhouse at 2 Hunters Run Circle about 9 p.m. in reference to an injured person. Inside the residence, officers discovered the two individuals. The cause of death was from a handgun that was recovered near Smith’s body, police said. A handgun case was found at Smith’s house, 21 Birchwood Trail, that matched the handgun found at the scene Smith was vice president at Barnwell/Smith Team, a Merrill Lynch firm, and Rasumoff worked at Willow Pond Apartments. Family members had called 911 after discovering the couple.

Down with HAGS (or whatever abbreviations you kids use) Graduates: Just like your GPA, your yearbook signature is forever. Make it memorable.

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Being on the yearbook committee in high school, I always took a special pride reading over my own book that I personally made sure included poorly timed tennis photos of my ex-boyfriend and dozens of lengthy letters from my close group of weirdos. It was a symbol that an era had ended,

and all that was left were these messages from the people who knew me when I was just a shy kid without a clue, but with a lot of Hollister T-shirts. The messages were supposed to be a remembrance of my time in high school. Something I could look back on with a smile — and probably a grimace. But five years later, some of the signatures of my classmates generate no reaction at all. “HAGS,” the abbreviation for “Have A Great Summer” decorated entire pages of white space meant for embarrassing memories and sincere compliments. It was obvious that back then my sole focus

was clearly quantity of people signing my yearbook, not quality. People who I haven’t seen in half a decade chose to make their final memories of themselves to be trendy lingo and not something worth remembering. Even some of my current best friends left no more than a phone number and, “We should hang soon!” High schoolers, don’t make the same mistake. I know this month has been an insane roller coaster of college applications, graduation parties and remembering to thank your grandparents for the congratulations check, but this really is an end of an era of your life. You’ll make plans to see your high school buddies, and some of them will stick, but some of them will fall through. Though

it doesn’t seem like it now, it could be the last time you’re in a room with someone for the rest of your life. Personally, there are a few former classmates of mine that have died since graduation, and one of the only memories of them I have left are their yearbook signatures. Not to get all morbid on you, but things happen. Social media communication is always an option, but you’ll be different people soon. Grown-ups with degrees, and jobs and cars that weren’t handed down to you. Who you are now is just a stepping stone to the person you were meant to be. So pay tribute to this era in your life, this person you are now, and write something that really matters. Something you won’t be embarrassed to read five years later.

Student to take ‘little free library’ proposal to City Commission She said the project is about community and sharing. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

A local student has presented an idea to the city to start a community book sharing project, and so far has received a favorable reception. Madeline Holt explained her idea for “little free libraries” to the Quality of Life Advisory Board at a recent meeting. Decorative boxes with books, called book trees, would be placed a various locations around the city. In the “take a book, return a book” concept, anyone could pick out a book, and bring back a book for others to take. Holt, of Ormond Beach, said she had visited her sister in San Francisco, and saw they had book trees that look like large bird houses.

She said many types of designs are available and can be unique to the city. “The concept emphasizes community and sharing,” she told the board. “It’s not just about providing books.” Holt is an international baccalaureate student at Spruce Creek High School. Holt said she believes Ormond Beach is the perfect place for a free library, because there are many places to sit and relax, such as by the ocean or river. She suggested locations such as Rockefeller Gardens, the Senior Center and the MacDonald House. Board Member Juliann Blanford also suggested Bailey Riverbridge Gardens. “I like to find a shady spot and read there,” she said. Some board members were concerned about theft. “How can you steal something that’s free?” Holt asked. “People will realize it’s not cool to steal.” Board Chairman Dr. Philip Shapiro asked what the source of books would be, and Holt said a few would be provided at first, and hopefully, people would bring more. Board member William Masters said she might get overwhelmed with books from people dropping them off, and City Manager Joyce Shanahan said that’s why you keep the boxes small. “You want 10 books, not 50,”

“You can’t steal something that’s free.” MADELINE HOLT, on her free library proposal

Shanahan said. “It should be dynamic and changing.” Holt said she and a committee of friends would monitor the book trees for vandalism and damage. The board was unanimously in favor of the idea. “What’s cool,” Blanford said, “is that you can share books you like.” Troy Railsback said the locations of other book trees could be placed on the boxes, guiding people to other locations around the city. APPARENTLY NOTHING IS TOO HEAVY TO STEAL 1:51 p.m. — 1200 Block of West Granada Boulevard Theft:The roll-off dumpster at a site where shops are being constructed was repoerted missing. A representative said it was not removed accidentally and was presumed stolen. It was a metal dumpster, measuring 20 feet long and 8 feet wide. It was painted blue with a company logo. A surveillance camera takes photos of the area every 15 minutes, and the photos are available on a website. The officer located

GROUNDS FOR COMPLAINT 7:36 a.m. — 200 Block of North Nova Road Civil Complaint: The officer arrived at the bank after a call about two suspicious individuals. Upon arriving, he saw them doing lawn maintenance. They said they had been taking care of the grounds since last week. A bank employee said they did not have a contract to work at the bank. He said the job was up for bids and had not been filled. One of the suspects showed the officer an email from an unknown source that said he was to start taking care of the grounds. The suspects were trespassed from the property until they can show documentation of their contract.

SMELLING’S NOT FINDING 10:22 p.m. — 200 Block of North U.S. 1 Information: The officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from a vehicle as it drove by. After stopping the car, the passenger and driver both got out and instantly become confrontational. When more officers arrived on the scene, they calmed down, but the passenger said, “You may smell something, but you won’t find anything.” The driver gave permission to search the vehicle and nothing was found.

Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center has a new device to help patients with chronic, nonhealing wounds and foot ulcers, one of the more common complications associated with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Called the LUNATM Fluorescence Micro-angiography System, this device is used to help assess a patient’s blood flow. The center is the first in Florida to provide the system, according to Lindsay Rew, assistant director of communications. “Sadly, in the U.S., more than 60% of nontraumatic lower-limb amputations occur in people with diabetes,” said Joan Hofmann, manager of the Diabetes Center and Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine at the medical center. Despite appropriate treatment, diabetics and patients with other debilitating conditions often suffer chronic, nonhealing wounds. “Ensuring adequate blood supply to tissue is critical to helping wounds heal,” said Dr. Stephen Levine, medical director. The LUNATM system uses fluorescence imaging, which is similar to X-ray, but does not involve exposure to radiation and contrast agents. Palm Coast resident Edna McCrohan does not have diabetes, but was one of the first patients to benefit from this new technology, Rew said. Last year, McCrohan, 91, had radiation treatment for a skin cancer lesion on her left calf.

When the wound didn’t heal, she was sent to Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center’s Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine for treatment. On April 14, McCrohan was one of eight patients to undergo the LUNA procedure. Doctors were able to identify areas with poor blood flow and alter her treatment.

or the month of May, the Ormond Beach Public Library is showcasing a photography exhibit called “Double Takes?!? — Serendipitous Sights And Signs,” by local photographer J. Walker Fischer. After having shared amusing images with his friends, Walker wanted to see if others might also enjoy the offbeat humor. “Not everybody ‘gets it’ but most people, I’ve observed, delight in catching the ironies and foibles of things going on around them,” Walker said. “Basically, it’s one of the personal ways of looking at the world. A sense of humor helps. I credit my mother, the late Sara Fischer, for instilling that sense in me.” Walker said finding the images is all about staying alert and being aware of your surroundings. He’s been photographing these kinds of images since the time of small point-and-shoot digital cameras. “Most ‘double takes’ don’t hang around long to be photographed,” Walker said, “some only for a few moments. You have to be ready at all times. And be willing to stop and turn around to capture that moment.” For library hours contact the Ormond Beach Public Library at 676-4193.

Jahmard Morgan and Cyrus Fagan celebrate after a big play.

NEW LEADERS OF THE SCHOOL GAME RECAP:

After losing many star players to graduation, Mainland showed there are more where they came from.

Mainland’s Backup quarterback Cyrus Fagan put on a show for the fans and college recruiters in attendance. He threw touchdown passes to Johnny Barkley, Na’Keevin Atkins and Randy Baker (called back), while also scrambling and rushing for over 40 yards. Peter Beaudet also kicked a 32-yard field goal. In the JV segment, Raymond Horton scored a one-yard touchdown after Jordan Bailey ran 49 yards before getting brought down inside the five-yard line.

omeone must have forgotten to tell Mainland that their game against the University Titans was a spring exhibition. The Buccaneers showed very little mercy in their 17-0 shutout Friday, May 22, at Mainland’s practice field. For three quarters, Mainland’s future stars played at full speed, scoring on offense and shutting down Lorenzo Lingard, one of the best running backs in the area, on defense. A number of college recruiters swarmed the sidelines, surveying the talent on both teams. Also in attendance were the famous Mainland band and a heavy fan base that cheered as if they were watching a high school playoff game. Before, during and after halftime, the band and Assistant Principal Shawn Troutman, who DJ-ed the game, turned the game into a party. “We’re just having a good time,” Troutman said. “It’s a family environment, and we’re enjoying football, in the backyard.”

ith cheerleaders present, fans cheering and referees on hand, the Flagler Palm Coast and Seabreeze spring game felt like the real deal May 21 at FPC. FPC won 14-10. Coaches Tom Moody (FPC) and Skip Saunier (Seabreeze) led their troops out for the first time as head coaches, after Caesar Campana retired from FPC and Marc Beach left for another coaching job. The game was filled with turnovers, which was expected, but everyone who dressed saw the field. Quarterback Dalton Thomas ran for a three-yard touchdown, and Que’Shaun Byrd added a threeyard score for the Bulldogs. Noah Motto converted a 41-yard field goal, and Ed DeFeo ran a one-yard touchdown for the Sandcrabs.
