Great Kids leader found dead Friends and family say helping children learn was her passion. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR
Sandy Rakes, founder and executive director of Great Kids Explorer Club, died May 31 in an apparent accidental drowning in a swimming pool at home. An autopsy was scheduled for June 1, and the results have not been released. Rakes was remembered the next day as someone who wanted to make a difference in the lives of local children with learning difficulties. “It was her vision and her passion,” said her husband, Terry Rakes. Students from local elementary schools receive free tutoring at Great Kids headquarters, 100 E. Granada Blvd., Suite 220, and also at United Methodist Church, 336 S. Halifax Drive. There are also schools in Port Orange and DeLeon Springs. The 501(3)c program partners with churches and receives SEE RAKES PAGE 3

Tears formed in her eyes the moment Principal Susan Persis stepped into Pine Trail Elementary’s courtyard June 1. The entire student body, faculty and staff were lined up along the sidewalk decorated in costume and smiles, holding signs that read, “We’ll miss you, Mrs. Perkins” and “Most Valuable Principal.” “I’m a little overwhelmed, and I have to tell you how much I love all of you,” Persis said in a speech during the event. “You are absolutely the best students that a principal could ever ask for. I’m kind of glad I’m retiring from Pine Trail because I could not get any better students, teachers,

There were 27 teams, almost double last year’s number. Each team had five members and one or two alternates in the event, which promotes camaraderie and provides an opportunity for team building and networking among chamber members. The number of teams was limited to 30, and there were a few cancellations.

Woman confessed to stealing from the box outside the thrift store. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
The donation box outside the Halifax Humane Society Thrift Store, 333 W. Granada Blvd., was broken into May 25. The society released surveillance video May 29 that showed a woman arriving in an SUV at the thrift store, cutting the lock on the donation box that is marked for veterans, and, after removing the donated items, placing her own lock on the box before she left the premises. The news coverage of the break-in led to an anonymous tip given to the Ormond Beach Police Department. The tipster told detectives that the woman in the video was Sara Denn. According to the affidavit, the person who called police claimed that Benn was known to steal clothing and re-sell it, and recognized the vehicle as belonging to Denn. An officer drove to Denn’s home May 30 and found a vehicle similar to the one shown in the security video that was also “completely full” of large amounts of clothing wrapped up in plastic bags. Denn was at home, and she immediately confessed after the officer showed her one of the security images. Denn said she broke in because she was looking for a missing debit card that may have been mixed in with some clothes she had donated to HHS. When questioned about why she didn’t just return the clothes afterwards, Denn said that she was “afraid of getting into trouble” and that she was going to re-donate the clothes she took by dropping them off at another donation box belonging to a different business. The police filed a charge against the 34-year-old for misdemeanor first degree petit theft, but whether she’ll be arrested and prosecuted for the donation box break-in is still unclear.

FRIENDS HOPE RAKES’ WORK CONTINUES donations from companies and individuals as well as the city of Ormond Beach. The organization works closely with local schools, and helps children overcome learning and behavior issues and gain selfconfidence. Sandy Rakes started the program in Ormond Beach in 2001. Susan Bacsick, tutor, said Rakes loved the kids and was known as “Miss Sandy.” “She put in six days a week and I don’t think she ever stopped thinking about it,” she said. Pam Fitzgerald, vice president, also hopes that Sandy Rakes’ work will go on. “I pray and hope we will continue,” she said. Another retiree, teacher Joanna Howe, has experienced the same phenomenon as a school teacher at The Children’s Workshop. Since the school opened in 1983, Howe has been teaching preschool children, even some who are children of former students. “I keep up with different students that are graduating and going to college,” Howe said. “It’s a great school. All of these teachers love the students.” Director Kim Adair said Howe tried to retire once before but ended up coming back. “I think this time it’s official,” she said. “I’m going to cry. We’ve got big shoes to fill.” After more than 30 years of teaching preschoolers, Howe said it’s time to see what the rest of the world has to offer. “I’m going to travel maybe, who knows,” she chuckled. “I will miss this school.”

Tomoka Elementary was called onto the school’s field for a fire drill. When she arrived, she found her entire school taking up a quarter mile of the track. They were all there to wish her good luck after she retires. “They put a crown on my head, and drove me around in a golf cart,” Johnson chuckled. “All 780 kids. They caught me by surprise.” Johnson, who has been working for Volusia County schools for 33 years, said she loved her 11 years at Tomoka Elementary. “All the schools in Volusia are amazing, but Tomoka has a special sense of community and family and a very welcoming environment,” Johnson said. “We’re family. Watching the children grow, and when they come back and tell us how they succeeded, it’s amazing. They go from 5-year-olds to fifth-graders. You don’t realize how much you do touch the children.”

Happy birthday, Momma Blackwood In honor of the 51st birthday of my favorite person, here’s 51 lessons I’ve learned from my mom.
EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
1. If you don’t clean your bathtub, you’re basically a hobo. 2. Boys who make you cry usually aren’t worth crying over. 3. Don’t chase after animals that run away. They know where the food is. 4. How you dress affects your mood (“So stop wearing baggy shirts, Emily.”). 5. Never give up on family. 6. Goodwill is just as good as Gucci. 7. Being able to laugh at yourself is powerful. 8. You can only get a good night’s sleep when you’re surrounded by 80 pillows. 9. If you’re sad,

you deserve a milkshake. 10. If you’re happy, you also deserve a milkshake. 11. It’s totally acceptable to quote yourself. 12. You can never have too many pairs of shoes. 13. Don’t buy a jacuzzi unless you’re sure it works. 14. If you feel like you want to redecorate, just rotate your living room furniture around until it feels new. 15. You’re allowed to have fun and act silly, no matter how old you are. 16. It’s OK to believe your horoscope only when you like what it says. 17. Pets are cuter when they’re fat. 18. If you’re stressed out, you probably just need an attitude adjustment. 19. You don’t have to be a teenage girl to enjoy Miley Cyrus. 20. A walk on the beach can cure almost anything. 21. Holidays with family are better when there’s wine. 22. You can also never have too many beauty products. 23. Reality
shows with a lot of women yelling are usually the best ones. 24. You’re not an adult until you learn how to cook. 25. Strength is measured by your ability to love despite the disappointments and setbacks. 26. Coffee made by someone else always tastes better. 27. Creating family traditions is important, even when they’re forced. 28. Appreciate what you have while you have it. 29. You can find humor in any situation. 30. Worrying about what other people think of you is pointless because people are only worried about themselves. 31. The best way to win an argument is to continuously talk until the other person goes to sleep. 32. A little laundry a day keeps you from having nothing to wear. 33. Don’t go to the store alone unless you want to be kidnapped. 34. How you spend your time becomes who you are. 35. You can make any place feel like home (even a garage). 36. We teach people
how to treat us. 37. The only person a dog truly loves, is the one who feeds him. 38. Don’t drive like a crazy person, you’ll hydroplane. 39. Generosity shouldn’t be limited to those we know. 40. Retail therapy is a real thing. 41. The best part about having kids is being able to play with Legos again. 42. Never chase perfection. 43. Don’t invest time in people who don’t invest in you. 44. No matter how much you dislike someone, it’s just easier to get along. 45. Close girlfriends are a necessity. 46. Moms have adapted and can now scold/shame you via Twitter. 47. Coming up with great ideas isn’t the same thing as actually pursuing them. 48. Give more than you take. 49. Friends aren’t your friends if they never offer to drive. 50. Rain is a good enough reason not to go out. 51. No matter where you are or what you’ve done, your mom will always come pick you up and buy you a milkshake.
Thoughts while doing nothing

Covering an event at The Casements recently, I had a few moments to take an inventory of notes and photos I had taken, so I sat on the grass in the shade, enjoying the weather. A young girl was spinning, hopping, dancing in the sun … seemingly celebrating being young on a beautiful day. A boy was running … cutting through people, running in circles … just running for the joy of running. Those are timeless activities and good to see in this electronic day and age. We’re lucky in Florida to have most of the year for this type of nonactivity. Midspring and mid-fall, ironically

Summer is the season for watching clouds go by. the slow tourist season, are the best days of the year for sitting, dancing or running in the grass. In Wisconsin, we were allowed a limited number of warm days. After a numbing winter, there would suddenly be a day in March when the temperature would be above 40. This was heady stuff. You knew you had to get out and enjoy, like a mayfly celebrating its few days of life. But in the Sunshine State, the nice days are generously provided in a way that makes it easy to become complacent. The sunny days go by one after the other, becoming months that float away like fat, white clouds on a summer breeze. The sun lets us know the importance of each day. It entertains with a glorious performance over the ocean each morning, and makes an extravagant exit in the evening. It makes you realize each day is a grand production that should be enjoyed.

The sunrise over the river indicates another day in paradise.
This is especially true during summer, and yes, even Florida has its seasons. For the beachcomber, the end of summer is first noticed when seaweed starts to wash in. Then terns and seagulls, the original snowbirds, begin appearing. The wind and the ocean become noticeably cooler. But it’s too early to talk about such things. Summer lies before us.

I’m going to set some deadlines to make sure the nice months don’t slip by unnoticed. I want to burn the bottom of my feet on hot sand at least once before summer’s end. I think I’ll schedule something into my iPhone to get a reminder beep. Or maybe I’ll email an appointment with myself in Outlook. I just want to be sure I sit on the lawn at least once more.

City Commission sets budget priorities Dog park, boat dock get high marks from commission. NEWS EDITOR
The City Commission gave staff direction on formulating next year’s budget at a workshop June 2. A similar workshop for the operating budget will be July 28, and the public will get a chance to comment at two public hearings in September as the budget is formally adopted. GRANADA BRIDGE LIGHTING?
Lighting up the Granada Bridge has been discussed in the past year, but is now on hold. The finance department reported that it would cost $140,000 to design the lighting and estimated the cost of construction to be from $1 million to $3 million. Cities around the world use creative lighting to enhance the appearance of bridges. One nearby example is Main Street Bridge in Jacksonville. Commissioner James Stowers said lighting the bridge would be “fantastic,” but the money could be used for a better investment. Commissioner Rick Boehm recommended placing it on the unfunded project list, rather than abandoning the idea. “There may be grants out there,” he said. “It would enhance the community.” Ormond MainStreet had endorsed the bridge lighting idea.
DREDGING AT CASSEN
Commissioner Bill Partington suggested using the $140,000 for another project recommended by Ormond MainStreet, dredging along the dock at Cassen Park so that visiting boats could tie up. The idea is that boaters traveling along the Intracoastal Waterway would be able to stop and visit Ormond Beach restaurants or other destinations. It would not be for overnight stays. The commissioners decided to hold off designating money for the dredging project until the full cost can be obtained.
“Residents are very interested in having a dog park.”

FIRST OK FOR FUNERAL HOME
After the workshop, at the regular City Commission meeting, the officials gave approval in a first reading for a funeral home to be added at Tuscany Shoppes, located on West Granada Boulevard between Hidden Hills Drive and Old Tomoka Road. A second reading is tentatively set for July 23. Planning Director Rick Goss told the officials that there will be sales, services and small processions at the facility, but no preparation of bodies. At an earlier Planning Board meeting, the members were told that any processions would exit onto Old Tomoka Road, and not go out toward Granada Boulevard.

PARTY TIME 2:29 a.m. — First Block of Greenvale Drive Information: The officer arrived at the residence in reference to a noise complaint that came from a residence about a quarter of a mile away across a forested area. When the officer arrived, he could hear yelling and music coming from the back of the house. Walking to the backyard, he observed three males dancing in the screened patio. One of the suspects said he was renting the house with a friend who was inside sleeping. The other two were visiting. A near-empty bottle of vodka was on the table. The officer informed them that they were in violation of the city noise ordinance.

HELICOPTER FINALLY STOPS MOTORCYCLE 8:05 p.m. — South Nova Road and Fleming Avenue Attempting to Elude at High Speed, Suspended License, No Driver’s License: The officer saw a black Honda sport motorcycle with no headlight, taillight or visible tag. Part of the front fairing was missing and it had a loud exhaust. The driver, wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and helmet, kept looking back at the officer who had to make a U-turn to get behind him. At a stop light, there was a pickup truck between the officer and the motorcycle. When the light turned green, the officer activated his emergency lights, and the truck pulled over.
OrmondBeachObserver.com
The motorcycle rider kept turning around and making eye contact with the officer. The officer noted that the driver spent more time looking back at him than he did looking ahead. The motorcycle increased his speed to about 100 mph, and began to dart in and out of all three lanes, cutting between cars without signaling and continuing to look back. The officer stopped the chase per department policy and radioed the information. A deputy saw the motorcycle go by but also could not chase per department policy. At 9:45 p.m. on the same night, the officer saw about 10 motorcycles going southbound. The same motorcycle that he followed earlier was leading the pack. The officer could not follow, because he was on the other side of the street. The same deputy tried to stop them but was again unsuccessful. Air One, the Sheriff’s Office helicopter, tracked the motorcycle’s movements, while keeping tabs on its traffic violations. Eventually, Port Orange police encountered the motorcycle in a subdivision and were able to arrest the driver on multiple charges including two counts of attempting to elude. The suspect told the Port Orange officer that he did not stop for the Ormond Beach officer because he knew he would go to jail for having a suspended license. He said he had a funeral to go to later in the week and did not want to miss it. His license had been suspended for failure to pay traffic fines. He was taken to Volusia County Branch Jail.

BIRD ‘Addicted’ to the dark room, Joe Campanellie, has found a niche with Florida nature photography. See his new show at Ocean Art, in Flagler Beach.
SHANNA FORTIER ASSOCIATE EDITOR
J
oe Campanellie’s introduction to photography was quite by accident, when he picked up a friend’s camera and began to play one day. From the moment that he developed his first roll of film, he was hooked. For the past 30 years, Campanellie has built a reputation as one of Maryland’s premier portrait photographers and has recently been making a name for himself as a nature and wildlife photographer in Florida, a niche that was also discovered by accident. While living in Maryland, Campanellie would take his camera into the woods, as a way of unwinding from the hustle and bustle of studio life. “I wanted to take a moment and just appreciate nature,” he said, while sitting in his Palm Coast home. He and his wife, Mary Jean, moved to Palm Coast three years ago. “It’s nice living in an area where there is so much to photograph.” Campanellie takes time to watch and learn the behaviors of birds before documenting their actions with his camera. This practice has earned him the nickname “Bird Man” among other photographers. Something unique to Campanellie is that he processes his images from start to finish in his home. “It’s a control thing,” he said, adding that he’s an old darkroom addict. Everything from post-processing to printing, to spraying and stretching is done by the artist. “For me, going from a traditional darkroom to a digital

hile the Green Wave missed the playoffs this past year, and failed to score in its spring game, players are still heading into the offseason with great expectations, especially the seniors. Father Lopez endured a 5-5 record last season. Now, with three- and four-year starters leading the way, wide receiver Nick Eastman believes Lopez will return to the postseason. “This class of upcoming seniors has been factors since freshman year,” he said, “and now it’s our turn to run everything and make it to the playoffs again.” Eastman has been one of the Green Wave’s leading receivers, catching over 600 yards in the past two seasons with three touchdowns, but with Brant Williams’ transfer to Mainland, Eastman will be expected to play a larger role going forward. Quarterback Josh Spencer showed signs of a more dualthreat game in the spring jamboree. Although he passed for over 1,300 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, Spencer only rushed for 107 yards. In the spring game,
he frequently took the ball up the field for a first down, or more, when he couldn’t find an open receiver. “I always try my best to lead my team, and this year I will look to do even more,” Spencer said. To add to his running game, Spencer will have Eastman, Ryan Atkins and Marquis Williams, who will catch his balls next season. Williams’ role on the team will most likely become top playmaker. Used primarily as a running back last season, he rushed for nearly 800 yards and 13 touchdowns. Williams’ best game came against Seffner Christian, where he went over 200 total yards and scored five times. While only catching one pass last year, Williams expects to become Spencer’s favorite target, now that Brant Williams is gone. In the spring game, the two tried to connect several times downfield. After missing the postseason, last year, Father Lopez believes its future is in good hands.

ave you ever stood embarrassed in a grocery line, shamefully looking on as a customer berated a cashier for making an honest mistake or doing what he’s employed to do? While covering a few Little League games this past season, I’ve experienced this feeling for some umpires. Last week, at a crucial moment in a game with two outs, a player hit a ground ball and made a run for first base. One of the defenders attempted to tag him on the baseline, but the runner made a maneuver out of the baseline that appeared to be an automatic out, avoided the defender and made it to first base. The umpire called him safe. Like Steve Bartman’s infamous Chicago Cubs catch, the offensive team scored more runs, and the umpire became the scapegoat. The defending team’s parents made known their displeasure of that call innings afterward. The kids even followed suit. I remember asking myself, “Do they think he cheated for the other team? Do they assume he was paid to make that call?” If these were not the case, then why does a Little League volunteer deserve such harsh anger? Spencer Barber, a member of the Flagler Umpire Association, has worked as a Little League umpire since 2004, and although it is sad to say, he’s gotten use to the unwarranted denigration. “I can recall an assistant coach that seemed to question every strike against his son this year, and a father that argued almost every call during a certain game,” Barber said. “While the coaches are pretty cool, some of the parents seem to think they can see the game better than the guys on the field.” Barber did say that troublesome parents are in the minority. Little League umpire abuse is nothing new. In a 1987 Sun Sentinel article, George Tagg, a 30-year veteran umpire, was interviewed about the “language beating” he suffered over his career. When asked about the lack of volunteer umpires, he said, “It’s hard to find Little League umpires because nobody wants to take the abuse you get.” While there should be programs geared toward promoting baseball, there should also be guidelines in every league that prohibit any criticism toward a volunteer who sacrifices his time for the sake of children and the community. There will always be players, but the same can’t be said about volunteers who get language beatings — for free.

A special THANK YOU to all of our VOLUNTEERS; we couldn’t do this without all of you!!!
Asher Ravede started running with his father, Jim, when he was just about 5 years old, and the two have formed a bond with every mile they conquered together. Because Asher Ravede has fallen in love with the sport, Jim Ravede sought advice from a cross country coach at an Embry-Riddle summer camp to better help his son. “He told me to let him run when he wants to,” Jim Ravede said, “and not to train him because I would burn him out, at his age.” Asher Ravede, 10, has taken some of his training in to his own hands, choosing to eat healthy foods. He once refused to eat pretzels at a class party because of the salt. Asher Ravede’s discipline paid off about a month ago, when he competed against nearly 200 runners and won Freedom Elementary’s Falcon 5K event in DeLand. It was just one of more than 80 5Ks Asher has run in his life. “At first, it was just to beat dad,” Jim Ravede said. “Soon enough, we would be finishing our last mile, and while I was completely done, he’d finish with a wild sprint.” Now, Ravede has set personal goals to reach certain times, and on race day, the entire family goes

out to encourage him. “Even my wife is panicking and screaming her lungs out because she knows the time he’s aiming for because that’s what Asher takes pride in during the race,” Jim Ravede said. “If he reaches a time he was aiming for, but finishes second or third, he’s happy. If he doesn’t get the time he was aiming for, no matter where he finishes, he’s not satisfied.” Running has united Jim Ravede with his son, which was part of their original goal. “This is something we wanted, a stronger bond with our kids,” Ravede added. “I couldn’t ask for a better son. Sometimes, I even feel like I want to be more like him, rather than he wanting to be more like me. I love the relationship I have with him.”

Angels win Pinto League Championship After building an early lead against the Rays, the Angels never looked back to win the title. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR
The Pinto League machine-pitch tournament began with 14 teams a couple of weeks ago, but, in the season finale, the Angels held off the Rays 20-14 for the championship win on Wednesday, May 27, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. “I’m just proud of these boys,” said Lee Katsikos, the first-year head coach. “They’ve come so far. We were in double elimination games, but we came back and fought, and that just shows the character of all these kids. They pulled it off.” When it seemed like the Angels would pull away early, the Rays continued to create offense to keep the game competitive in the first three innings. The Angels,
however, extended its lead to 18-6, which proved to be too big of a hole. “I thought it was a tough game for us,” Rays coach Heath Owen said. “It was an uphill battle the entire time, but we gave it all we had.” Down by 12, the Rays did not go away silently. They were able to trim the lead down to four, but, after the Angels scored another two runs, there was little they could do to keep up. “We really wanted it,” Owen added. “We had a couple bad bounces on defense, but finishing second is nothing to be ashamed of. You take the good times when you have them, and you learn from the bad ones.” The Pinto League’s 14 teams was the largest in its history.

The event featured a costume contest, a pet art project and plenty of “lappuccinos” for the dogs. Puppy-friendly vendors who attended the event included Sandy Phillips, owner of Olivia’s Doggie Designs. She sells her custom pet clothes on Etsy and Facebook and has been asked to make everything from collars to kilts. “One lady had a special bagpipe she wanted to attach to the kilt,” Phillips said, who has had the business for four years. “I started when I got my dog Olivia, and I couldn’t find clothes to fit her. So I started making her clothes, and it turned into a huge business.” Costume contest winner Lulu loves to play dress up according to her owner, Linda Kerr.“I got her at Abracadabra, and they told me to socialize her when she was a baby,” Kerr said. “That’s why she is like she is.”

‘Don’t Fry’ Day SIX TIPS FOR SUN SAFETY
– Jewelry Repair Goldsmith on premises!

Pine Trail Elementary practices sun safety with Dr. Terri Bianchi. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
At Pine Trail Elementary, faculty has incorporated a sun care curriculum during the students’ special area time in PE called “Sunny Days, Healthy Ways.” Being a sponsor for the program is just one way Ormond Beach Dermatology and Dr. Terri Bianchi give their sun safety knowledge back to the schools. According to former Parent Teacher Association President Jennifer Valenti, the Bianchi family is also the main benefactor, in conjunction with Pine Tail’s PTA, in the purchase of a $15,000 sun shade. The sun shade was constructed in May, and perfectly timed with the school’s “Don’t Fry Day” campaign. “I was the PTA president last year when we started the project,” Valenti said. “I initiated a fundraiser, with all proceeds going toward, and essentially, kick starting the sun shade project. Terri Bianchi soon became the driving force behind raising further funds.” Bianchi said that skin cancer is a significant public health problem that requires immediate attention, especially in children. “This spring our nation’s acting surgeon general issued a call to action stating skin cancer is our nation’s most common cancer,” Bianchi wrote in an email. “Rates of incidence are rising for the

often lethal form of skin cancer, melanoma. Sadly, the outlook for our children is disturbing. Each year since the 1970s, the rate of melanoma in children has risen about 2%. This diagnosis was formally rare in children. I hope to change the odds for our schoolchildren and teach life skills to tackle this public health crisis: lack of sun protection.” Bianchi also writes the monthly PTA school newsletter called “The Pioneer Post.” Each issue includes her column, “Sunny Days Healthy Ways.” “Sun safety is paramount and relevant in early learners,” she said. “Establishing healthy routines in early childhood fosters lifelong influence and action. A call to action to prevent skin cancer included a key element: increase sun protection outdoors by calling on leaders in schools in increase the availability of shade. Childhood sun exposure significantly influences skin cancer risk.
The World Health Organization recognized sun exposure during school years contributes significantly to cumulative life time exposure. Considering a child’s typical weekday: six to nine hours spent at school when sunlight is intense, often outdoors and exposed at recess, PE, field trips, and after-school care. Schools are uniquely placed to advocate for and promote sun protection.” Bianchi hopes the Fry Day and the sun shade will further open up the conversation about sun safety and what needs to be done to keep local children aware. “Just as we teach children to brush teeth and floss, use seat belts, PTE life skills, and the like, I fostered health promotion and disease prevention with my sun safety initiative,” Bianchi said. “Providing a shade structure seemed natural to give the children the shade to seek. Increased attention is urgently needed regarding sun protection.”

Boys and Girls Clubs raise $250,000 COMMUNITY EDITOR
After a year of serving 1,500 students throughout eight different clubs in the local area, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties celebrated with its 18th-annual Steak and Steak Dinner. Held at the Oceanside Hilton in Daytona Beach, one of the organization’s biggest fundraising events raised $250,000. Dr. Fred Costello, Ormond Beach resident and Boys and Girls Club board member, often donates his dental services to the club’s students.
“Boys and Girls Clubs have a track record of supporting not only the academic and the social but the entire child,” said Costello, who supports the clubs’ initiatives in Tallahassee. “It’s not just after-school care, it’s getting them an opportunity to grow in their relationship with their peers, and be challenged by people who care about how they grow, mature and become good citizens.” Costello is also state representative for District 25. According to Director of Development for the Boys and Girls Clubs Darla Otey Whitaker,

the event gives the donors like Costello an opportunity to see the kinds of programming that is offered throughout the year. “The Steak and Steak is definitely our signature event,” Otey Whitaker said. “It gives us our operation funds for the year. We have a broad range of activities that our children participate in, such as Power Hour, to catch up on homework and other things like fine arts, Boy and Girl Scouts and athletic activities.” Also in attendance from Ormond Beach was Kevin Bowler, a board member and Exceptional Services Award winner.
