n 2013, Cindy Lescarbeau barely had enough energy and stamina to get to work. A five-year battle with kidney failure had left her on the couch, too exhausted to do much of anything. “I just saved all my energy to get to work and get home,” Lescarbeau said. “It was hard on my family. I started going downhill very slowly, but that last year I lost my vigor for life. I didn’t feel depressed, I just didn’t feel anything.” “It made me depressed seeing her just dragging away,” said her son, 23-year-old Julian Lescarbeau. It’s still hard for her to believe that someone who was once a total stranger, was willing to give Lescarbeau her life back. Erika Treadway, whose only connection to Lescarbeau at the time was attending the same, very large place of worship: Tomoka Christian Church. “I met her two months before the surgery,” Lescarbeau said. “She said she couldn’t bear to

look at my kids and know that she could have given them their mom back.” Once the surgery was complete, the kidney started working immediately, and both women progressed faster than the doctors anticipated. One doctor even nicknamed the organ “a super kidney.” “I thank God, and I thank Erika, because she gave me my life back, and she gave me more time with my kids and my husband and with the company and all the things I want to do,” Lescarbeau said. “She’s an amazing person, and we should be like her.” In the year and a half after her transplant, Lescarbeau has been very busy making sure she doesn’t take a single day for granted. Her faith-based dance company, Dance Divine Ministries, stayed small since its opening in 2000 with 26 students and five staff members. After her surgery, she had the energy, confidence and faith to take a risk with her business. “In the spring I started feeling really good,” Lescarbeau said.

In his nearly two decades as a judge of the Seventh Judicial Circuit, William Parsons has done everything he possibly could in his honorable position. He has served twice as chief judge and presided over criminal, civil, family, dependency, juvenile delinquency and probate cases. Parsons said some of his favorite memories from the bench are working with other judges. When he first started, the judges he worked with helped him to think like a judge, and be completely neutral when trying cases — a skill that is very difficult for most to overcome. “When a lawyer comes in and makes a presentation, they’re presenting the argument in the client’s best interest,” Parsons said. “At the end of the day, the judge is there with these two strong argu-

SPIN FOR SENIORS

Assisted living residents see the latest craze. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

It was a meeting of the generations June 12 when “hoopers” and a drum circle entertained residents of Seaside Manor, 1050 Ocean Shore Blvd. The last time many of the residents of the assisted living facility had seen hula hoops was decades ago when the goal was just to keep the rings going around the hips. Today, legs, arms and neck are all used in an artistic dance. Kalan Lis, life enrichment leader at the facility, is a “hooper” herself, and invited friend Ichi Vazquez to help entertain the residents. They hooped to the

beat of a drum circle called The Flagler Beats. Lis, who has been at the facility for a month and a half, said she wanted to do something special for the residents. She said they don’t know how hula hooping has evolved, and she wanted to share it with them. “It’s my passion,” she said. Hooping is currently popular among the millennial generation. But after the Lis and Vazquez got started at the facility, they had an appreciative audience among the seniors. “Fabulous. It’s just beautiful,” said Deloris Defode. “We’re so lucky to have an animated activity director like her.”

Defode said she remembered hula hoops as a child, but “sure couldn’t do that.” Kay Bailey, a retired teacher and also a resident of the facility, said she saw a lot of feeling, spirit and happiness in the movement and the music. Providing a steady and irresistible beat for the hoopers was the Flagler Beats, made up of Flagler County residents, who get together and drum for fun and also play at places such as art shows and yoga studios. Lately, they have been getting together every Monday at 7 p.m. at the Granada Beach approach. Each Thursday, they drum at the Wickline Senior Center in Flagler Beach. New members are welcome. At approximately 7:20 p.m. on June 10, the Ormond Beach Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 84 N. Arbor Drive. The fire appears to have been accidental, starting in the garage and spreading to the attic and house, according to a spokeswoman. There were no injuries. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist the family. Damages are estimated at approximately $80,000. The fire department was assisted by Holly Hill Fire Department, Volusia County Fire Services and Volusia County EMS. Call the Fire Department at 676-3255.

So I just knew if I hired the teachers, the company would grow. I was right knowing that I wasn’t going to make any money, but I knew it would get better. I

ments. Our sole obligation is to do what the law requires. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what that is. That takes some time to adjust to.” For this judge, cases involving the death penalty were the hardest to figure out. “It’s the heaviest lifting that you do as a judge,” Parsons said. “The ultimate decision lies with you. You want to be absolutely right in your analysis.” Though his knowledge and skill set will soon be missing from the bench, Parsons has personally made sure his responsibility is in good hands by inviting the new judges into his home. “Over the years the most memorable part has been being a mentor for new judges,” Parsons said. “I’ve invited eight or nine judges into my home on Sundays for

what we call ‘Parsons’ KitchenTable Briefing.’ It’s really rewarding to see them bloom.” Parsons said he enjoys helping the new judges, because he remembers what it’s like to be one. “When I first started in criminal law up in Putnam, the first day I had arraignments,” Parsons recalled. “You have to swear in all the inmates before you start questioning them. I’m ready to go, and I want to do a good job, so I start doing the questions, and one of the inmates says, ‘Judge, I know you’re new here, but you have to swear me in first.’ The inmate knew more about the process than I did. And things like that happen all the time.” He tells all his new judges he’s mentoring that you really have to learn how to role with the punch-

You have very bad days, but you can’t ride the roller coaster of emotions,” he said. Parsons will be stepping down from the bench at the end of this year to join Cobb Cole Law Firm, where his daughter also works. “At this phase of my life, I want to use my skill set in a different way,” Parsons said. “Eventually, I want a develop a mediation practice to help people with their cases. I was a trial lawyer for 21 years, and it’s exciting work as well. I’m working for a change in life that is constructive, and I can help people, use my skill and background in a positive way.” Email Emily Blackwood at emily@ormondbeachobserver.com.

The man, the myth, the mustache

COMMUNITY EDITOR

For all I know, my dad has had a mustache since the dawn of time. Though its fluffiness has varied throughout the years, the ’stache has been a part of every birthday, family dinner and lecture about driving in the rain that I can remember. In other words, the mustache is very much a part of the Blackwood family. Now, my dad is generally a goofy guy. I have vivid memories of him running around the house with underwear on his head. He even has his own theme song, accurately titled “I Love Myself,” and sometimes

he likes to beautifully serenade his own reflection. Most of my friends, however, do not know this side of my dad. He works as a project manager for nuclear power plants, so his job has made him travel quite a bit, and he was usually only home on the weekends. Because of this, most of my friends tell me they’ve always found my dad to be intimidating. A man who dances around the living room singing “I Love Myself” is generally not intimidating. So there’s really only one reason my friends were afraid of him: the mustache. To think that a patch of hair could evoke such a different impression of a person is still crazy to me. I mean, if I grew a mustache, would I suddenly be intimidating or just gross? The subtle effects of my father’s mustache have been blown out of proportion a few times in my family’s history — especially when it was gone.

FRIEDRICH HAYEK “Road to Serfdom,” 1944

A mustache has always been part of the Blackwood family.

One summer, my mom broke her leg in an attempt to impress my brother with her skimboarding skills (that itself could be a whole other column). The day after she got home from her surgery, I was in my room when I heard the loudest scream. I ran into the living room half-expecting to see her on the ground or breaking another bone in an attempt to get my brother to laugh. But she was just crying, staring at my dad and yelling ,“HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?” My dad spun around to reveal

a strangely smooth upper lip. Though it was very weird to see, my mom’s overreaction would have made you think he personally started the apocalypse. The absence of his mustache didn’t change much about the family dynamic. Dad still sang very loudly and was as goofy as he had always been. My friends — well, the few that my mom would let see him in that condition — were no longer intimidated because they thought he was a total stranger. Needless to say, he never shaved again.

Naval Academy grad ready to set sail Ormond student finds himself suited to military life. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Alexander Fedorovich, a recent graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, said it’s not easy to explain to his friends about his life at the military college the last few years. “Some of the things we do make no sense, but turn out to be bonding experiences,” he said. For an example, Fedorovich, 22, a graduate of Father Lopez Catholic High School, described the Herndon Monument Climb. At the sound of a cannon blast, 1,000 “plebes” (first-year students) charge toward a 21-foot gray monument. On top is the white “Dixie cup” hat, like the one they’ve had to wear throughout their year. As thousands watch, they work together to replace it with an upperclassman’s hat, to signify the end of their plebe year. Adding to the difficulty is that 200 pounds of lard have been added to the monument by upperclassmen.

Other than the occasional raucous event such as the Herndon climb, life on the campus is regimented like the military. “You have a love/hate relationship while you’re there, but after you get out you appreciate the experience,” Fedorovich said. He also said it’s one of the most beautiful campuses you’ll ever see. Fedorovich had friends at other colleges, where the life was quite a bit freer. But he has no regrets about his choice. “I found it suited my personality,” he said. “I thought I would do well in a military structure.” But Fedorovich and his dad, Nick, agree that it was academics, not the military, that drew him to the academy. Growing up, he spent a lot of time on the beach, and went to the Keys each year for lobster season. At one time, he considered marine biology as a career, but then discovered ocean engineering and found that it was available at the

academy. Ocean engineering is civil and mechanical engineering applied in a water environment, such as renovating ships in dry dock or developing weapons systems, oil platforms, etc. “People have told me for a long time I need to be in some type of engineering,” Fedorovich said. Now an ensign, Fedorovich will soon head out to Hawaii where he will be assigned to a destroyer.

His dad, Nick, said he’s happy about his son’s choice, and he’ll never forget the night Alexander brought up the Naval Academy as a possibility. He told his son that he would help, but he would have to do all of the research, find out what was required and follow through. “I wanted to make sure he was committed,” he said. Nick Fedorovich recognizes that everyone in uniform is in harm’s way, and there is always unrest in the world. “On a destroyer, he’s probably safer than you and me,” he said. Fedorovich got the required nomination from Rep. John Mica and had several interviews before being accepted. In the last six years, there have been 27 Naval Academy graduates in the Sixth Congressional District, which includes Volusia County. A normal tour of duty after the academy is five years, but Fedorovich chose a seven-year program, where he will be on a ship for two years and then go to graduate school to eventually become a project manager.

RATS! 8:03 p.m. — First Block of Carmel Terrace Civil Complaint: The victim said he let the suspect stay at his home while he was up north. When he came home, he found that the suspect’s dog had found a rat in the couch and had torn the couch up going after it. Also, a chair was missing. The victim was upset about how dirty and uncared for the house was.

JUNE 7

SHOPPER TAKES EYES OFF PURSE FOR 10 SECONDS 1:43 p.m. — 1400 Block of West Granada Boulevard Burglary of Conveyance: After grocery shopping, the victim opened the windows of her truck to release the heat. She placed her purse on the center console. She said she started to load her groceries and when she checked for her purse after about 10 seconds, she noticed it was missing. She did not hear or see anyone in the immediate area. She drove home and started calling credit card companies and found that a card had already been used to buy gas. Her phone was in her purse, and she tried to locate it using the “find my phone” feature, but it had been turned off. The officer was able to obtain prints from the passenger door, and he also got “elimination” prints from the victim.

CREDIT SCORE ALERTS VICTIM 5:03 p.m. — First Block of Brookwood Drive Fraud: The victim said she noticed her credit score went down, and found there was a bill with a collection service for an AT&T account she did not open. She filed a report, and they removed the account from her record. Apparently, someone had used her personal information to create an account. The officer recognized the address on the fraudulent bill as being a foreclosed house where a family had illegally squatted.

JUNE 9

A GREAT DEAL? 9:14 p.m. — 700 Block of South Atlantic Avenue Armed Robbery: The victim said two suspects in a Toyota asked him if he was interested in buying a new iPhone 6 for $400. The victim got in the back seat and gave them $350 as an offer. One of the suspects was not willing to hand over the phone. He pulled a knife and said, “We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” and told the victim to get out of the vehicle. After a police officer initiated a traffic stop nearby, the suspect who pulled the knife now pulled a revolver and told the victim to get out. After the victim got out, the suspects fled with the phone and the cash. The victim told police he wanted to buy the iPhone because it was a great deal.

SPORTS Coach and players: Bridging the gap

here is a common saying in the sports world that “Father Time is undefeated.” Against Arthur Kowitz, he may have met his match. In the last year alone, Kowitz was crowned the AHRMA Daytona Superbike winner, the eSuperSport National & World Champion and the AHRMA Superbike National Champion. He was 65 years old. “When you’re 28 years old, you usually think somebody older than your dad is finished,” Kowitz said. “When you get on the race track, and somebody takes you apart, whether it’s a girl, old man or a Martian, and they outrun you, you have to respect that.” When he was too young to walk, Kowitz was rolling soup cans around on the floor for wheels. He’s always had a knack for twowheeled vehicles. At 13 years old, he built his own motorcycle, since that was the only way his parents agreed to allow him to ride one. “I found a gasoline motor out of a country washing machine, got a bunch of junk from behind a

local appliance shop and made a clutch out of roller-skate wheels,” he said. “After it was finished, I began to ride it around town.” With the help of his father, who supported him, once he saw the finished product, Kowitz was able to get an official title to his creation. After a few street-race wins with his homemade bike, Kowitz began to work on local road racers’ motorcycles, and, while at the track to support a friend, he realized they had nothing on him. He was right. Just as he owned the street races, Kowitz won his debut road race. After winning multiple races and progressing up the motorcycle-racing ranks, he saw the pros in the American Motorcyclist Association and thought to himself, “I could be wrong, but I ride faster than that going to the library.” From there, Kowitz put number

plates on his Kawasaki and took his talents to the track. Going from amateur to novice to pro in the AMA, Kowitz finished in respectable positions throughout this career as a privateer. His lone victory came in 1975, when he took the checkered flag at Pocono. In 1983, Kowitz left the racing business, due to twin baby boys, and devoted more time to his real estate business, Arthur Kowitz Realty, which just celebrated its 40th anniversary last month. “At the beginning, my goal was to manage 125 units,” Kowitz said. “I figured I could make a good living off that number. Well, we blew past that, and now we manage nearly 1,000. The real estate business has been good to me.” Kowitz returned to the racing world to the Vintage Road Racing Association in 2007, and has won multiple championships. Father Time 0, Arthur Kowitz 1.

remember before and after every away JV basketball game in high school, my teammates and I would make up rhymes (freestyle) on the school bus as coach Brian Humphrey peacefully drove, often smiling. With every good punch line, everyone on the bus would yell, “Man!” signifying their approval. Our freestyle session and respect for Coach Hump drastically increased when he silenced the bus and made his debut into the rap world. While his only rhyme wasn’t, understandably, up to par, the entire bus went crazy. Coach Hump humbled himself from the coaching level and became one of us. We were proud to call him our coach. It’s always refreshing to hear stories of how coaches bridge the age and culture gap with their players through dance, rap, singing and other methods that make them closer to their group. Here in Flagler and Volusia counties, I’ve heard interesting stories about coaches’ attempts to reduce the gap, including Seabreeze Raushod Floyd’s favorite memory of former head coach Marc Beach. “When we were in Kuwait, Coach Beach, because he played defensive back in his days, challenged a guy to catch the ball on him. That was the funniest thing I ever saw Coach do. I thought he was going to break his hip, but he did a good job covering the guy.” Because of that moment, Floyd gained a new respect for his coach. Matanzas football head coach Robert Ripley also haves fun with his players on their level. “We do a lot of different things to connect with the kids,” he said. “We often listen to music at practice, and I cut up and laugh with them. You have to be willing. Some coaches struggle with that. The ‘I was coached one way, so that’s how I coach’ mentality doesn’t work anymore. They have to know you care.” It’s moments like these that have helped decide where kids choose to attend college. Some of the toughest coaches have changed their stance on the “no fun” idea of coaching, due to that reality. There is a video of Nick Saban, who’s known as one of the hardest coaches in the business, doing the electric slide in a recruit’s living room with other family members. While it may not be enjoyable to those who are “above that level,” it means the world to those who matter the most.

WORTH TRAVELING FOR When tennis players from around the world come to the Daytona area, they reach out to Bogue for lessons.

According to Tennisround.com, there are nearly 30 tennis courts in Port Orange, but Marius Tabacila drives 35 minutes to the Ormond Beach Tennis Center, so new director Trey Bogue can coach his 7-year-old daughter, Irina Tabacila. In just three months of work, Marius Tabacila praised Bogue for the improvements he’s seen in his daughter. “She competed in the Oceanside Club tournament a few weeks ago, and won her first trophy,” he said. “That was her first time competing. We didn’t know what to expect, and we were so happy she got a trophy.” “I was more happy than the person who got first place,” Irina Tabacila said. “I was jumping around. It’s nice to win a trophy, and I’m having lots of fun with coach Trey. He’s a really good coach.” Bogue took over operations at the Center back in October, when the old regime lost its con-

tract. Since his start, the Ormond Beach community has supported him and sought his professional expertise. “I didn’t take many lessons before him, but, now, I hit a lot of balls with Trey,” said Stanley Laczka, a member of the 60-65 Greater Volusia Tennis League. “He’s an excellent teacher.” Before he began to learn under Bogue, Laczka was a 2.5 on USTA’s national ranking scale. In less than a year, he’s jumped to a 3.5. “Some guys play all their lives and never get to a 3.5 level,” Bogue said. “My philosophy is more oldschool, where you hit 1,000 and then you hit 1,000 more. As long as you’re on the fine-tuning of it, you’re going to get better.” “Like anything, though, you have to stay with it,” he added. “If you lay off for two weeks, and then you try to jump back in it, you certainly won’t be as finetuned as you were, if you play every week.” Bogue’s coaching experience includes Augusta College in the 1980s, a couple of other college

Try Bogue coached Irina Tabacila to her first trophy in his first tournament.

“The biggest difference with Trey being here is his attitude. Everyone’s happier, and Trey is just more energetic. I get calls from people from as far as Germany and Canada who, when they come here, they want me to set up hitting times with Trey. Everyone likes him.”

Trey Bogue has been recognized as Coach of the Year three times in his career.

At the Tennis Center, Bogue specializes in professional instructions at all levels, all ages and all abilities. Those around the facility, like Jim Reilly, the morning court organizer, commended Bogue for everything he’s brought to the center. “The biggest difference with Trey being here is his attitude,” Reilly said. “Everyone’s happier, and Trey is just more energetic. I get calls from people from as far as Germany and Canada who, when they come here, they want me to set up hitting times with Trey. Everyone likes him.” The Ormond Beach Tennis Center offers a wide range of activities at the center, which is located at 38 East Granada Blvd. in Ormond Beach. Call 275-1870.

olka dots, denim vests and kitty cats were just a few of the themes for this year’s Fashionista Summer Camp. Held at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum, this weeklong camp teaches young kids how to make an idea come to life. “This camp is not a tailoring camp or a learn-how-to-sew camp,” Museum Director Susan Richmond said. “This is all about creativity.” Twenty girls signed up for this year’s camp to create outfits of their own designs. With

the help of museum staff and volunteers, these young ladies experienced not only what it was like to walk the runway, but to create it. “These girls came Monday with an idea, a thought in their head,” Richmond said. “They got to learn about problem solving and compromising because maybe we didn’t have the fabric they were envisioning. They learned about collaboration. We saw many of the girls working together. It was a great week.” —EMILY BLACKWOOD

Riptides may get OK for later music on weeknights Restaurant seeks to revise special exception. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Once size does not fit all. At least that’s what the Planning Board decided on July 11 when they recommended approval for Riptides Raw Bar and Grill, 869 S. Atlantic Ave., to have live music Sunday through Thursday until 10 p.m., while other establishments in the area must stop at 8 p.m. The final decision will be made by the City Commission. The restaurant can have live music until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and no change to these nights was requested. Last year, nearby Dimitri’s Bar Deck and Grill came forward with a request to have live music. After an inspection by the Planning Department, the city decided the restaurant, which is adjacent to a residential neighborhood, must stop the music by 8 p.m. Later, when it was discovered that the Beach Bucket Bar and Grill and Riptides also had live music, those restaurants were given the same guidelines. It was decided that having different hours would make the code too difficult for police to enforce, and having the same hours would be fair to the businesses.

On July 11, Riptides General Manager Shawn Flaherty and supporters gave convincing arguments to the board to allow the restaurant to have live music until 10 p.m., and the board agreed in a 4-1 vote (there were two absences.) The City Commission will take the board’s decision under consideration when they consider the matter. It’s tentatively scheduled for their regular meeting on June 23. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN RESTAURANTS CITED

Before the vote, Rick Goss, planning director, told the board his department recommended denying the request. He cited last year’s decisions for equity among restaurants, and said other restaurants could come forward and also ask for an exception. Flaherty made the point to the Planning Board that the beachside music rules were based on conditions surrounding Dimitri’s, which is a different situation. “Dimitri’s is four stories high,” Fleming said. He said now that he has a roof over the outdoor patio, there are only two directions the music can

escape. “I’ve never had a noise complaint,” he said. There was an email from a nearby condominium resident asking that the special exception be denied, but the request wasn’t on account of hearing music from Riptides, it was because he feared it would set a precedent for other restaurants. Board member Lori Tolland did not see a problem with restaurants having different hours. She pointed out that only five restaurants in the city have outdoor music. “It doesn’t seem too confusing,” she said. But board member Pat Behnke said there are only five restaurants now, but more could come later, so she believed standard hours

RESTAURANT HAS BEEN PLAYING UNTIL 10 P.M.

Dan Stutz, sales manager for S.R. Perrott, was at the meeting to support Riptides. “I’m glad to see an independent operator make it in Ormond Beach,” he said. “I think everyone should be dealt with on an individual basis.” Board member Rita Press asked if they needed the later hours for people who drink, rather than buy dinner. “I served $9,000 of dinner after nine last night,” Flaherty

responded. He also pointed out that the bar is inside and dinner is served out on the patio where the music is located. Behnke had a problem with the fact that Riptides has been playing music until 10 p.m., against the regulation. Flaherty said that they did not attend the commission meeting last year, and did not know about the ruling. They recently requested the special exception after learning about the time requirement. “My concern is that if they didn’t keep the rule before, they can play until midnight and say they didn’t know,” Behnke said. The board voted to recommend approval of the request to play music until 10 p.m., with Behnke giving the lone “no” vote.
