Large dogs are part of the reason why the Halifax Humane Society is currently not a no-kill shelter.
Despite some negativity, Halifax Humane Society is still pushing to create a total adoption community. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
For decades, Halifax Humane Society was your typical animal shelter: an overflow of abandoned pets, and only a few homes willing to take them in. The result was more animals being put down than anybody with a moral code
would be comfortable with. But once a like-minded team started to form, this typical animal shelter started to change. “We had decades of research that showed us what we were doing wasn’t working,” said Community Outreach Director Tyler Stover. “We wanted to do things to decrease those numbers and

find more homes for the animals.” In the past few years alone, HHS has started numerous community programs to help prevent abandoned animals and find homes for the ones that are. Spay and neuter clinics, behavior training, adoption promotions and more accurate owner matching are just a few of the ways that HHS has grown to a 70% live-release rate (animals that find homes). In the next five years, the shelter hopes to have a 90% rate, making them
a no-kill shelter. “Though we’re becoming a no kill shelter, we’re not going to change our policy,” Stover said. “We will still take in all animals. But we want to do more than that. We want to make the Greater Daytona Beach area a total adoption community.” Stover said no matter what, there will always be a small number of animals that have to be put SEE SEEKING PAGE 4
The City Commission gave approval on how to spend Community Development Block Grant funds for the next fiscal year at its regular meeting June 23. These Housing and Urban Development funds are received each year and are administered by Volusia County Community Assistance. The amount this year is $141,624. The Neighborhood Improvement Advisory Board held a mandatory public hearing April 23 for citizen input and to hear from applicants requesting the funding. The funds are designated for an area of the city where census figures show there is low to moderate income. However, the money can also be spent on improvements in any part of the city that meet the Americans with Disabilities Act, or for nonprofit groups that help those in need. Last year, the City Commission used the money to fund Sports Complex T-ball ADA improvements, Ormond Beach Housing Authority public housing roof replacement, Volusia/Flagler Coalition for the Homeless, Great Kids Explorer Club and Halifax Urban Ministries for a total allocation of $94,333. This year, $25,000 went to the neighborhood designated by the census figures, thanks to the efforts of two residents of the area, Terry Mercer and Juliann Blanford, who approached the Neighborhood Improvement Advisory Board with suggestions for Melrose Park, a pocket park on the river. Museum declared beautififul
For the fourth consecutive year, Ormond Beach was recognized as a Playful City USA Community by KaBOOM! In partnership with the Humana Foundation, the campaign highlights 241 cities that make their communities more playable. “Ormond Beach continually focuses on providing the very best recreational amenities and opportunities for all citizens,” Mayor Ed Kelley said. “We are fortunate to live in a community of beautiful parks and the highest quality recreational facilities consisting of approximately 600 acres over 47 parks.” Ormond Beach is the only city in Volusia County with the 2015 designation and was selected for its continued outstanding dedication to play.
The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce presented garden artisan Janett Taylor with a city beautification award in recognition of her work enhancing and maintaining in the lush gardens of the Ormond Beach Memorial Art Museum. Taylor has maintained the museum gardens for 34 years, and has received the award twice in the past. The Ormond Art Museum has also recently been accepted into the American Horticultural Society’s Reciprocal Admissions Program, and soon all museum members will be able to access reciprocal benefits such as free admission to nearly 300 gardens across the country. New membership cards reflecting the added benefits are expected to go out to members by the end of July.

HIGHWAY TO THE NEW ORMOND NEWS EDITOR
The city made changes that it hopes will spur development along North U.S. 1 at its regular meeting June 23, when it approved rules for itinerant merchants and outdoor entertainment that occur during special events. The city and Volusia County signed an interlocal agreement earlier this year, giving the city authority over the corridor, which is considered an important gateway into Ormond Beach. Some of the properties along the road are only busy during special events with itinerant merchants. In the new regulations, properties with year-round business will be allowed to continue their vendor activities during special events, but those that are only busy during special events will only be able to continue for another five years. The purpose of this change, according to city documents, is to encourage development of the properties. “We’re going to make it look like Ormond Beach one day,” said City Commissioner Rick Boehm, at the first reading of the ordinance earlier this month. Boehm also congratulated City
Attorney Randy Hayes for his work on the ordinances. Commissioner James Stowers called the regulations another milestone in bringing the corridor up to Ormond Beach standards, after four years of negotiations with the county. “I think with pride about what has gone on the past five years,” he said. “Cheaters is gone … we’re annexing property from the county that previously controlled, or uncontrolled, this area.” He said there are more changes to come, and the gateway will continue to be a point of focus. During special events, usually bike weeks, itinerant merchants set up entertainment and retail activities along the corridor. The new regulations grandfather in 15 properties along the corridor that have permanent business, and they will be able to continue these activities. Properties that do not have year-round businesses will be able to continue activities for the next five years only. These include the Broken Spoke Saloon, Boot Hill Saloon and the Moonshine Campground. Also, bike washes will not be allowed, unless they are part of a permanent business. The regulations state that if properties are improved with

year-round businesses, reestablishment of itinerant vending activities could be permitted at the sole discretion of the City Commission. The interlocal agreement gives the city control of the corridor, even though it is currently a mixture of county and city property. The city is now able to annex properties even if they are not contiguous with the city. Another reason for city control is that it is has been awkward enforcing laws and providing services in an area with mixed jurisdictions, officials have said in the past. The city has assigned codes to the properties along the stretch similar to the county codes they were under previously. The city also set fees for vendors during special events, which are generally lower than those previously charged by the county, according to Planning Director Rick Goss. About $50,000 should be brought in to city coffers in a year, which is expected to pay for field inspections and administrative costs.
The Boot Hill Saloon may be action packed during events, but the rest of year appears deserted.

County residents and businesses pay surcharge for city water. Now that the interlocal agreement has been signed with the county, more and more properties along North U.S. 1 are coming into the city. At the June 23 City Commission meeting for example, the city annexed Harris Village RV Park, Wild Bill’s, Kurras Mobile Village and Beaver Bar. The city can now annex properties even if they are not contiguous, and officials say that taxes and the cost of services is often lower for the resident or business after annexation. A recent conversation with Planning Director Rick Goss helps explain. For one thing, the property tax millage is lower. Businesses and residents in the county pay a Multiple Services Tax Unit, which includes police and public works. They also pay a fire control tax. The total of these two millages is 5.64. The comparable millage in the city for police, public works and fire is 4.2. But the biggest savings is not taxes, but rather from the water bill for both residents and businesses. If a person lives in unincorporated Volusia County, and gets water and sewer service from the city, they pay a 50% surcharge. If they are annexed into the city, this surcharge goes away. Goss said when he makes a presentation to a neighborhood about annexation, he uses the example of a house valued at $410,000 that uses 3,000 gallons of water each month. If it’s in the county and has city water/sewer, they pay $370 for sewer/ water. If in the city, they pay $252. The city also has a slightly lower millage rate in property taxes. There are some things both city and county residents pay for, of course, namely schools and libraries. For sanitation, city residents pay $13.59 monthly and county residents, $16. The cost of sanitation for a business depends on their dumpster size. The big difference maker is water and sewer, and that’s true for businesses as well as residential areas. Most businesses annexed by the city are already on city water and sewer, so when annexed, they are saving the surcharge, making a big difference in their bill. If you’re on city water and sewer already, it’s certain you would see a savings after being annexed. If not, then a careful comparison would be required to see if there is a savings.

Right now, there are two main areas that are slowing HHS down: an overpopulation of feral cats and restricted ownership of large dogs. According to Stover, wild cats are very hard to adopt and don’t do well in shelter environments. “There is not a huge market of people looking for wild cats, who have lived outside for their entire lives,” Stover said. “People generally don’t want an animal that will hide under the couch for a month.” In order to combat this issue, HHS has implemented Trap Neuter and Release programs throughout the county. Instead of bringing feral cats into a shelter, they are taken to a clinic where they are spayed, neutered, vaccinated and returned to their colony. Overtime, this limits the size of the colony without having to put the cats down for no reason. So far, 10 out of 17 cities are on board, and Stover said that the more who sign on, the faster HHS can create a total adoption community. “Some are hesitant because of government issues, and they have some conflicting research,” Stover said. “Some people worry about the environmental impact of leaving the cats there, killing birds. And some believe that it doesn’t shrink the size of the cat colony. But we know from decades of pulling cats into a shelter that that alone doesn’t decrease the number of cats.” It’s also hard for HHS to find homes for their large dogs, especially those like pitbulls or other

restrictive breeds. Stover said people are less likely to adopt them because of housing restrictions and home insurance policies. “The sad thing is that it would actually benefit a community to let large dog owners in,” Stover said. “A lot of pet owners are looking for homes, and pet owners generally stay longer in one place and are more responsible.” HHS is combating this problem with programs that educate people about large dogs, and help owners with their canine’s behavioral issues. DEATH THREATS
HHS dealt with the exact issues above recently that led to a negative — and almost harmful — outcry from the community. The shelter took in over 130 cats that had been neglected, from a home in Deltona earlier this month. After an inaccurate report was released saying the cats were adoptable, the community was outraged to learn that most of the cats had to be euthanized due to life-threatening diseases. Stover said some cats tested positive for the deadly virus feline panleukopenia, and many had feline leukemia, feline AIDS or both. “They were in very poor condition, and no one realizes how dangerous panleukopenia could be to a shelter,” Stover said. “It hasn’t happened here yet, but it’s been known to wipe out entire shelters of animals. It’s very difficult to contain.” Stover thinks that the misinformation is what led to his and the rest of the employees’ inboxes filling up with hateful emails. One employee even received a death threat that the police are now investigating. “There’s a lot of emotion with a case like that, especially when there is misinformation. We’re involved in a lot of controversial cases, but most of the time our only role is taking care of the animal until charges can be determined. People seem to believe that we have more control than we really do sometimes.” Still, this hasn’t strayed the shelter from their goal. Though they’re hoping for quicker changes in the next two to three years, they predict to be a no-kill shelter by 2020. “I wish we could just flip a switch, but everyone has to work together,” Stover said. “If we all work together, there is going to be a great change.”

Mercer appeared at the City Commission meeting to thank the board for its cooperation in designating funds for the neighborhood, and also encourage more funds to be spent there in the future. However, she was not able to speak because it was a consent item. Members of the audience can only speak to consent items if they are pulled from the consent agenda, and no commissioner pulled the item. After the meeting, Mercer said she and other residents of the designated area will have more suggestions next year. The area designated by census figures contains an area east of the railroad tracks from Division Avenue north to Wilmette Avenue. West of the tracks, it goes from West Granada Boulevard north to U.S. 1, bounded on the west by Nova Road. It also covers an area from Hand Avenue north to Tomoka Avenue in the area west of South Nova Road. RIPTIDES GETS OK FOR MUSIC
In other action, the commission gave approval to Riptides Bar and Grill, 869 S. Atlantic Ave., to have music until 10 p.m. on weeknights, rather than stopping at 8 p.m. They can have live music until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and this was not changed. The commissioners said they will handle requests from restaurants on a case-by-case basis on this type of decision.

5 ways to get to know your neighbors With modern society pushing for disconnection, it’s important to know who lives next door.
EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
Before I moved to Florida, I lived in the heart of a tiny cul de sac right outside of Louisville, Kentucky. I didn’t have to look too far for a group of friends, because practically all of my next door neighbors had kids around the same age as me. Life back then was full of kickball tournaments, bug explorations and building snowmen (then tearing them down). Being 8 years old, I didn’t understand the importance and rarity of having a close group of neighbors. Since then, I’ve never even been on a first-name basis with the people I’m geographically closest too. And not getting to know my neighbors seems almost irresponsible on my part. Who would I run to if someone broke into my house or if my internet was down and I had to watch the new season of “Scandal” ASAP?! Friends and family will always be there for you, but sometimes the 15 minutes it takes for them to get here can be a little much. Thankfully, I’m not the only
person who’s isolating themselves in their living room. A study conducted by State Farm last year revealed that only 25% of Americans know the name of their next door neighbors. Basically, we’re all living next to strangers. Isn’t that a little creepy? Still, part of my hesitation for going beyond the usual neighborly exchange of slight waves and head nods is the awkward process itself. I’ve only been on this Earth for 22 years, but it seems that before social media took over, neighbors were a big (and sometimes unwanted) part of American lives. People would bake pies for the newbies, and gossip with each other over white picket fences. The collection of houses on a single street seemed to be a social circle all its own. I may have gotten most of my information from old movies, but I don’t think I’m far off here. Today, it’s not like that at all. If someone brought me a pie when I first moved in, I would automatically think they were weirdos trying to poison me. I’m not against free desserts, but it’s too sketchy for strangers to bring you food nowadays. Thanks to our never-ending bad news addictions, we’re all (or maybe it’s just me) assuming the worst. So, in a world where you’re likely to get more conversation through your phone than
an actual human being, how do you break the bubble you’ve built around your address? And do so in a way that doesn’t make you look weird or creepy? I have no real knowledge or experiences to back these ideas up, but I think the following suggestions could work: 1) LEAVE TRASH IN YOUR FRONT YARD (OR RIGHT OUTSIDE YOUR APARTMENT DOOR) FOR A WEEK STRAIGHT
Eventually, someone from the neighborhood is going to complain to you personally about it. Some of the best friendships are built on conflict, so wait as long as it takes! It’s practically guaranteed that they’ll never forget your name. 2) HOST A GARAGE SALE
It’s scientifically proven (slight exaggeration) that the quickest way to get to know someone is to look through their junk. You and your neighbor are both collectors of terrible beach bathroom decor? Boom: instant connection. 3) ARRANGE A “BUMP IN”
This step has worked wonders in the past for me, so listen up. Just follow your neighbor around for a few days, and see where they go. Then set up a time where you can accidentally “run into them” at a place you both just “happen” to go to. Fate works in mysterious ways
when you learn to control it. 4) DO SOME DIGGING
The phrase “it’s a small world” is total truth, especially in a place like Ormond Beach. Simply looking up your neighbor on Facebook could reveal that you guys have a few mutual friends. Then you could invite them out in a group without things being weird. Yay for using social media for more than just political rants! 5) “LOSE” A PET
When Bear ran away for like six hours, practically my entire neighborhood was on the lookout. My frantic need to find him overruled my usual anxiety of talking to strangers, so I actually got to know a few of my former neighbors that way. Instead of waiting for this opportunity to arrive, why not just create it? Handing out flyers and stopping people on the street is much more acceptable when there’s a cute puppy involved. Just make sure you create a believable scenario for when you finally find Spot (you may need to adopt a dog for this step). Then you can throw a party and introduce him to everyone who took part in the search! While my ideas might not be the most morally sound, it’s still important for you take advantage of everyday opportunities to get to know your neighbors. Ormond Beach is about community, so let’s start in our own backyards.

Ormond Beach students were recently recognized for their service to the Daytona Playhouse. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
Out of the many faces that shined on the stages of the Daytona Playhouse this year, three local students stole the spotlight. During the theater’s annual gala June 5, Linda Yackel, Johnathan Foege and Darian Parks were recognized for their time and talent. Yackel, a graduating Seabreeze
High School student, was awarded the Jed and Ernie Dyer scholarship. She is a frequent volunteer at the playhouse, passionate about theater and came highly recommended from her drama teacher from Seabreeze. The Playhouse also awarded its Next Generation awards to Johnathan Foege, of Ormond Beach, and Darian Parks, of St. Augustine. Foege, 15, has been
volunteering at the playhouse since 2011, and has provided both his acting skills and artistic talents to many shows. Foege said it’s the audience’s reaction that drives his passion for theater. “Seeing that they enjoyed the show is such a positive experience,” Foege said. “Also, being backstage with the cast and crew is fun.” Though he’s played many roles since he began acting five years ago, his favorite is the role he’s currently portraying: Captain Bluebeard of the show “Pirates!”
“I like it because it’s different than roles I’ve played before,” Foege said. “It’s more commanding and strong. I hope to continue to work on more shows, but it’s not necessarily a career, more of a hobby right now.” Daytona Playhouse President Danny Crile had a few nice words for the award winners. “These young folks are our future, and represent some of the best of their generation,” he said.

SCAMMING HACKER 1:27 p.m. — First Block of Horseshoe Falls Drive. Fraud: The victim said she purchased a virus protection program from a computer company, which installed the program. Later, she received a call from a different company saying their server crashed and they could not support the program. The voice, which had a foreign accent, said if she gave him access to the computer and some personal information, he would remove the program and refund her money. One night, she gave them access to her computer, and after several hours of waiting, she went to bed. The next day she received several more calls. She discovered they had created a Western Union account to supposedly refund her money. She called Western Union and cancelled the account. Also, there was a holding balance of $399, so she cancelled her credit card. She called the original company, and they said she still had an active subscription for the virus program. The victim is not out any money, but wanted the incident documented so police would be aware of the scam.

NOT MY GUN 2:14 a.m. — North Beach Street and West Granada Boulevard. Traffic Stop: While operating moving radar, the officer
noticed a Nissan Altima going 48 mph in a 35 mph zone. After stopping the car, the officer could smell marijuana. Before the officer began a search of the car, the driver uttered that he didn’t think anything illegal was in the car, but if a gun was found, he would have no knowledge of it. The officer found a black, fully loaded, Smith and Wesson handgun under the front passenger seat. A check of the serial number did not show a theft. Since no one in the car had any knowledge of the gun, it was taken to the police department for safekeeping. The driver was told that if he finds the gun owner, he should have him pick up the gun at the station with proper documentation. The driver was given a ticket for speeding. STICKY SEAT 6:34 p.m. — 100 Block of South Nova Road. Theft: The victim said he and his friend left their bicycles outside the store unsecured and went inside. When they came back out, his bike was missing. He said it was black but he didn’t know the brand. He advised there should be a piece of gum stuck to the bottom of the seat. He said he was given the bike by a friend and its estimated value is $50. The bike was not entered as stolen because the serial number was not known.

ithout any worries of competition or coaches giving orders about routines and practice drills, the girls of Ormond Beach Gymnastics, and others who want to learn the sport or want something to do on the weekend, spent a couple of hours honing their skills at open gym Friday, June 19, at Ormond Beach Gymnastics & Cheer Center. The gym was open to anyone between ages 8-21, and everyone from beginner level to those trailing Gabby Douglas’ footsteps was welcomed. It was a night free from pressure. When the gymnasts fell,
they laughed it off and enjoyed their mistakes, rather than crying over a fall that would have dropped them in the standings of a competition. They had no rivals to compete against, only friends they had previously met on nights such as this one. “I didn’t know anyone, except my sister, when we first came here,” said Autumn Daversa, one of the Level-3 gymnasts. “Now, I’m friends with and talk to everybody.” “Autumn came up to me and introduced herself, and we’ve been friends ever since,” said Victoria Buenner, one of the other top gymnasts at Ormond Beach Gymnastics. On open gym night, coaches perform light spotting and assist those who seek their assistance.

kids an open forum, where they can work on whatever they feel they need to work on, without the restrictions of class time and waiting in line.” GEORGE POSTELL, coach
Coach George Postell also gets in a work out, as everyone requests his help with back tucks and other maneuvers. “The kids love these kinds of nights,” Postell said. “Open gym gives the kids an open forum, where they can work on whatever they feel the need to work on, without the restrictions of class time and waiting in line.
This is also one of the methods to how you get kids involved in it. It sparks the interest into the gymnastic program, which actually happens a lot.” Ormond Beach Gymnastics is currently seeking financial assistance to help send seven girls to the Junior Olympics national competition, which will be held from Aug. 3-7, in Virginia. They recently held a fundraiser at Publix for donations. The next open gym will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 29. There is a $5 entrance fee for all participants. “A lot of these kids aren’t even from my gym,” Postell added. “They come from other gyms and cheerleading facilities just to work on their skills, which is a good thing. We’re providing a service for everybody to come and enjoy.” For more information, call 6763250.

hile dozens of athletes couldn’t make that phone call to wish their biological dad a Happy Father’s Day, due to his absence, a lot of them were still able to celebrate the holiday and thank coaches for stepping up and being father figures. This past weekend, Quindon Stokes, a recent Flagler Palm Coast graduate, texted FPC basketball coach Gary McDaniel to wish him a Happy Father’s Day and thanked him for everything. “With my father being in prison most of my basketball career, I knew if I ever needed anything or someone to talk to, he would be there for me,” Stokes said. “He was more than a coach to me. He helped me understand things that my mom wouldn’t be able to teach me.” “I love kids, and I work at the high-school level because I like to develop them,” McDaniel said. “It’s what I enjoy the most. Quindon has been with me for the past four years, and he’s become a part of my family.” There is a passage in the Bible (Jeremiah 49:11) where God talks about being a father to the fatherless. As a former athlete and current sports writer, who speaks with hundreds of single-parent athletes, I see this scripture spontaneously come alive in sports more than any other arena. My dad walked out on my mom when she needed him the most, with three young kids and me on the way. Growing up, we never called him on Father’s Day. With an absent father, I sought that kind of relationship from my coaches. If I scored a touchdown or won a basketball game, I didn’t look for dad in the stands. I ran to the sidelines and got kudos from my “sports fathers.” Like McDaniel, that’s why I want to coach high school sports someday. Especially for those athletes with absentee fathers; I want to be to them an example worth modeling a life after. It is said that raising a child takes a village. Even with present fathers in a household, father figures are also necessary. Josh Stevens, a 2014 Seabreeze graduate, understood this, in light of John Abdo, his high school running backs coach, who influenced him. “He was always real and honest about everything,” Stevens said. “We could come to him about anything, and he would pray with us.” I will always admire the men who make Father’s Day special to kids, even when they’re not biological dads.

While an Ormond Beach resident didn’t win it all, the city’s participants put their stamp on the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA Triathlon Series, taking 18 of the top 50 places, including the first female finisher, on Sunday, June 21, in Ormond Beach. Racers had to swim 300 yards, hop on a bike and ride 10 miles, and then close out the three-course event with a 5K run. Those who finished in the Top 30 included: John Dodd, third; Wesley Morris, fourth; Ken Klein, fifth; Joe Ventura, sixth; Aaron Jenkins, seventh; Matthew Banker, ninth; Todd Graff, 10th; Naomi Ventura, 18th (the first overall female finisher); Scott White, 19th; Troy Railsback, 20th; Scott Bell, 21st, Jeff Goldman, 23rd; William Lisle, 27th; and Dalton L’Heureux, 28th.

Team RWB hosts record-breaking pancake breakfast Pancakes brought in the crowds to Dunn’s Attic June 13 to raise funds for the veterans’ 40th-annual Firecracker race. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
Nothing drives a crowed like maple syrup. Team Red White and Blue recently broke the record for a pancake breakfast fundraiser at Dunn’s Attic by selling 277 tickets. “This was an amazing gesture on the part of Wes Dunn and Dunn’s Attic,” said Tracee Fleming, community outreach director of the Team RWB Daytona Chapter. “He split all the proceeds 50/50 with Team RWB, in the end handing over a donation of $700.” Staff from Morgan Stanley volunteered their morning to serve pancakes and drinks, and Branch Manager David Welsh even bussed tables alongside Wes Dunn. The event was held as a fundraiser for the 40th-annual Firecracker four-mile and 10-mile races taking place July 4 on Daytona Beach. Team RWB is the
primary charitable beneficiary of this race, which is being organized by the Daytona Beach Track Club and presented by Halifax Health as part of the Live Your Life Well Series. “The Firecracker race was how I actually found out about Team RWB in 2012, and it has become incredibly important to me,” Fleming said. “When I officially joined the team in 2013, just after the race, my brother was about to deploy to Afghanistan, and it was a means for me to do something positive with my nervous energy. I’ve never regretted a moment spend volunteering to support America’s veterans.” Runners can register online through June 29 at teamrwbfirecrackerrace.com. Runners can participate in person or they have the option to participate virtually if they will be out of town. The race is being promoted through the network of Team RWB Chap-

ters and will have veterans, active duty military including some who are deployed, and family members participating all around the country and all around the world. Nearly 1,000 virtual runners are registered.
Vince Faulkner, Matt Wolf and Danny Giacobbe helped raise money for Team RWB’s upcoming race.

Why Choose a Periodontist?
Residents can learn to eat cheaper, healthier
They are dentistry’s experts in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of Periodontal Disease and in the placement of Dental Implants. They receive three additional years of training in both surgical and non-surgical treatment of Periodontal Disease.
Workshops are planned at South Ormond Neighborhood Center. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR
An effort to help local residents eat healthier on a limited budget was not a big draw on its first night, June 23, but leader Rebecca Taylor hopes it will gain traction and attract more people in coming weeks. One person showed up on the first night. The workshops, which include how to have a more active lifestyle, is planned to run June 23 and 30; July 14, 21 and 28; and Aug. 4 and 11. Presented by the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension office, the program is funded by a federal grant through SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The sessions are held 5:30-7 p.m. at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center, 176 Division Ave. The lone attendee, Bobbie Emery, of Ormond Beach, said she wanted to learn more about how to shop for food and cook in a cheaper and healthier way. “I’ve eaten healthy all my life,” she said. “My dad had a garden.” Taylor said most Americans are not eating healthy. “We eat at a fast pace,” she said. “We have fast food and packaged food. When you cook your own food, you have control over what’s
in it.” She said the workshop includes how to read labels so people can learn what they are eating. She recalled an earlier class when a woman was surprised that a tuna sub had more fat than a Philly cheesesteak. She said people think it’s expensive to eat healthy. In the workshop, she explains how to plan menus and shopping trips to save money and eat healthier. Portion size is also very important. “We can eat anything we want if we stay in the portion size,” she said. Taylor said we are lucky in the area, because there are a lot of farmers markets. Food that is shipped a long way loses some of its nutrition, and the markets are also more economical. Call 822-5778, ext. 5418.
