Aida Spina’s Her new book relates the story of Heaven’s Garden Ministries, a local women’s shelter. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Left behind by her boyfriend on a trip to Daytona Beach for Bike Week, the woman had nowhere to go. She was robbed and beaten. But then, the police took her to Heaven’s Garden Ministries, a women’s shelter on Ridgewood Avenue in Daytona Beach. She was able to stay there, and the staff helped her get replacements for lost documents and enough money to get home. This is one of the stories that Aida Spina remembers about the shelter she operated for three years until 2006. Her book, “No Matter What,” is the history of those years, about a faith-based residential program for women who were coming out of prostitution, homelessness or domestic violence. “We helped them get back into society and become productive community members,” Spina said recently. “It was an incredible journey.” Now 10 years later, she said she felt compelled to write the 98-page book as a way to thank all of the people and organizations that helped, and to encourage everyone with the knowledge that there is no such thing as hopelessness. “I believe there is a way out of any circumstance,” she said Spina hopes those who remember the shelter, or who are interested in the book, will stop by for a book signing at 1-4 p.m. July 9 at Family Christian Stores, 2286 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach. She hopes to see people who worked with the shelter so she can personally thank them. “I hope to see a lot of familiar faces,” she said. NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Spina remembers working with women who had their children taken away because of drug abuse or other reasons. She would arrange to have visits with the Department of Children and Families and the children. “We would build bridges,” she said. “Eventually they would get their children back, which was incredible.” Many people and agencies helped with the shelter, including Stewart Marchman Foundation, state and local criminal justice systems, doctors, police, schools, the homeless coalition and churches. “We all want to help,” Spina said. “If we get together we can do it better by uniting resources.” Her efforts received recognition. The shelter operated during the faith-based initiative by President George W. Bush, and she was invited to Tallahassee to meet Gov. Jeb Bush, and then to Washington, D.C., where she met President George W. Bush in 2004. A VOLUNTEER REMEMBERS

ida Health Hospice, would have Bible studies at the shelter for the women. “I really am hoping to see a program like that again,” she said. “She did an awesome job. They took them to the doctor, to classes to help get a job … people would come in to provide counseling.” King said she sometimes hears from women who got help at the shelter, and they are still doing well. A NEW BEGINNING

There were more than 50 volunteers at the shelter, teaching computer skills, how to dress, arts and crafts, etc. “It was an amazing season,” Spina said. It was a live-in place, and Spina lived there as well. She put her all into the shelter, and found, after three years, that she was actually doing more work than one person should do. “I was burned out,” she said. “I had a lot of volunteers, but the responsibility was on my shoulders and it took a toll on me.” She now has plans to start a new Heaven’s Garden Ministries, perhaps even bigger than before. But this time, she has a person who

will work along beside her and share the duties: Nancy Mills, of New Smyrna Beach. They are looking for a location, and once they find one, will be able to get started. Spina is a pastor, ordained by Michael Bacon of Glory Tabernacle International Ministries in Youngsville, North Carolina. She has worked as a supervisor and woman’s advocate at a domestic abuse shelter and at Serenity House, where she first got the idea to start Heaven’s Garden. Spina has been featured in several magazines and received a proclamation from Volusia County on Women in Leadership Day in 2005. She prayed in a nationally televised event at the Speedway during the National Day of Prayer in 2004.

We’re better together Oasis Church, On The Move and the Childhood Cancer Foundation are helping families affected by childhood cancer. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

When your child is diagnosed with cancer, everything else in your life takes a back seat — even though sometimes that doesn’t seem possible. “There was a time when I didn’t have enough gas to get to the hospital,” said Rose Mary Fraguada, whose daughter Camila GarciaFraguada was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in February 2014. “I called Jack (Becker), and he said ‘I’ll be there in five minutes.’ He waited for us and brought us home.” As the executive director for the Childhood Cancer Foundation, Becker said the goal is always to make life as normal as possible for the family during what can be the worst days of their lives. “We started by giving out gas cards to get to and from hospital visits,” he said. “Now we take care of everything from car repairs to power bills and marriage counseling. All the things a normal family needs.” As a single mother, Fraguada said it was difficult for her to make her family feel like everything was going to be OK even though they were struggling financially. But thanks to CCF, she and her family had the support they needed to focus on getting their 8-year-old better. She was declared in remission this past May. “Camila has been a tireless warrior,” said her mother. “Her motto has always been: ‘You have to do what you have to do, to be good.’ For me it’s very important to make awareness that this horrible illness is touching more kids that we imagine, that families coping with this situation leave everything to be 200% with their kids.” The Fraguadas are one of 38 families in Volusia that CFF is currently serving. Helping families like the Fraguadas is the mission behind Oasis Church and On the Move’s upcoming Better Together event. Held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 9 at Rockefeller Gardens, the event will raise money for CFF to continue helping local families affected by cancer. Admission is $5. “It’s important that the community understand the wonderful job CCF is doing bringing hope and some relief to our families,” Fraguada said. “We, as a family, invite the community to be part of the battle, and help Camila to see her dream come true: a cancer free world.”

John was born on May 1, 1934, in Ottawa, to LeRoy and Mary (Jacklovich) Halliday. He was a graduate of Marquette High School class of 1953. John married Carol Lee Conner on April 23, 1960 at St. Columba Church in Ottawa. He was a US Army Veteran and spent 2 years in the Army Reserves. For 30 years, he was employed at Sundstrand in LaSalle, IL. Although he worked hard, he was a jokester and enjoyed playing pranks on his fellow co-workers. Following his retirement from Sundstrand, he and his wife moved to Ormond Beach, FL where they resided for 20 years. They built a beautiful home there and John purchased the Cadillac of his dreams. Their daily ritual was to go out to lunch and explore Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach. At 4:00 PM they routinely watched Judge Judy and 6:00 PM Family Feud. They both loved Florida and the time they spent there together. Through his Tuesday and Thursday coffee club at the Hunter’s Ridge Club House, he meet some very dear friends. Special thanks to everyone who called, visited, brought him ice cream/cake, chocolates, prepared meals and just helped out in general. He is survived by his son Keith (Lori) Halliday, of Bloomington, IL, his daughter, Laurie (Steven) Ginn, of Lakeland, FL, and 3 granddaughters: Mackenzie Halliday, Krystal Halliday and Nicole Ginn. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Carol of 56 years who passed away just recently on Sunday June 19, 2016.

professionals solved crimes and protected the community.” “It was then I knew this is the path I wanted to follow by becoming a law enforcement officer,” she said. “My position affords me the opportunity to educate children as to what an officer is about and build trusting relationships between parents, children and the community.” Smith was also motivated to join the force after a friend was killed in a car crash by a drunk driver. She has often used her Miss Flagler County title to speak out against driving under the influence, knowing personally the hardships on the individuals and all those affected by the crime. As a part of the OBPD’s attempt to create better relationships with the community, Smith has enjoyed the conversations and friendships she’s developed with the monthly Coffee With A Cop and Soda With A Cop programs,

which offer the community free cups of coffee and soda at set times with the officers. Smith said her toughest challenges deal with witnessing the homeless, using the Baker Act and dealing with the miseries of the streets. “Being able to speak to someone and encourage them that they can make a change for the better, if they only believe in themselves, is essential for the community,” she said. As a young lady and new officer, Smith realizes that she lacks a great deal of life experience, but she won’t allow that to stop her. “They may see me differently at first, but (they) should not underestimate me because of my size or beauty titles,” she said. “I am trained in strength, combat training, marksmanship and law enforcement.”

Don’t we have way too many dollar stores? The city’s Economic Developer Joe Mannarino says there are 12; I feel it’s more like 50.

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Last week I was told — either through a dream or in an email I accidentally deleted — that a Wawa was going to replace the recently demolished Cheaters Gentlemen’s Club on North U.S. 1. Thrilled with the idea, I immediately called up the city’s Economic Developer Joe Mannarino for a confirmation. My heart literally sank

when he told me that there was not going to be a Wawa, but another Dollar General. Ugh. Frustrated and hangry (hungry + angry), I ranted about my misfortunes to my friend, Madeline. She agreed with my stance on Ormond not needing another dollar store, and through our combined mathematical efforts (yikes), we figured out that Ormond already has 17. I harassed Joe for what was probably the fifth time this week (sorry, there’s a fruit basket en route to City Hall), and he guessed there were 12 dollar stores within our city limits. According to Google Maps, there are a total of 10: three Dollar Generals, two Dollar

YOUR THOUGHTS Here’s how you responded to this week’s column on Facebook: n “As someone who used to work for a Dollar General, I honestly believe it’s great that there is another location opening up. They are all always so busy, and I don’t think that there is one out that way, so now the people who live out there don’t have to drive further for one. Plus that location is going to get a ton of traffic just because of where it is. Very smart move to put one there.” - Ashley Croteau n “I don’t find them any cheaper than Walmart,” said Debbie Eggers. n “I love them,” said Andrea Christgau. “They are affordable! Not everyone can afford to shop at Target or Walmart.” n “Ormond Beach needs to grow,” said Elizabeth Gabriel. “A Wawa would help us attract more people in my opinion.” n “We need a Wawa in Ormond, and that would have been the perfect location to have one,” said Gia Zimmerer.

One of possibly 17 — or 10? or 12? — dollar stores in Ormond Beach.

Trees, four Family Dollars and one A&G Dollar Store. So really, who knows? Though the number isn’t definite, I’d say anything over five seems a bit excessive. Now, I love a bargain — dollar stores are exclusively where I buy my tealight candle packs — but Ormond is not that big, and I think we’ve passed our limit. “It’s an indicator of the market,” Joe explained to me in the “Emily calm down” voice my dad always uses. “We’re not recruiting them, but obviously there is a market for them because they’re here.” Self-described as a “free market kind of guy,” Joe said that though it’s hard to determine exactly why so many dollar stores are here, it might have something to do with the fact that it’s not just Ormond folk we need to take into consideration. Residents of Holly Hill and unincorporated

Volusia County might also be frequenting these stores. “There’s also the retired population who are on a fixed income who shop there,” he said. “They’re looking for value.” And, I was once again reminded, it’s not all about me. I know when construction is happening, there’s always a hope inside us that it’s going to be something cool and beneficial to our own personal needs and wants. But the best part about living in a community like Ormond is that it’s not just your community. It’s ours. While your dream might be to have a Target within walking distance to your house, it could be your neighbor’s to have a Dollar General on the way home from work. Our city may be small, but I think there’s enough room for each of us to have something we can be excited about.

During an intense game of Simon Says, a group of kids playfully tackle one of their volunteer leaders.

Attendance for the church’s weeklong camp more than doubled in size this year. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

The halls of Tomoka United Methodist Church were a lot darker than usual this week, making some of the kids who attended Cave Quest a little nervous. “We had some toddlers who were very unsure at first,” Pastor Brian Johnson said. “But the camp is all about how when we’re in the dark and scared, God gives us hope. It helps the kids deal with what they’re afraid of.” Two-year-old Last year, the vacation Bible Addison Johnson school only had about 30 kids, crawled through but for reasons unknown to the the popular cave church’s staff, this year their tunnel attendance more than doubled

to 80 kids. Johnson thinks it may have had to do with the theme, which they borrowed from First United Methodist Church. “Kids in Florida don’t know a lot about caves,” he laughed. “The surf theme is kind of the norm.” During the weeklong day camp, the kids learned Bible themes, did science projects and learned some cave-themed lessons at Imagination Station. “We’ve covered geodes and cave snot (bacteria that hangs from the walls and ceilings of caves),” said Sue Small-Kreider, volunteer. “We talk to kids about thinking beyond what they can see visually.” Johnson said this will be the first of many kids activities available during the summer. GOOD ADVICE 5:38 p.m. — 200 Block of Williamson Boulevard Theft. The officer responded to the business after the report of an attempted stolen bicycle. The suspect said he found the bike beside the business. He was riding it around the parking lot when confronted by the victim. He gave it to the victim, and told him he should be careful about where he leaves his bike. The victim did not pursue charges but the business manager had the suspect trespassed from the property.

NEW USE FOR SOCIAL MEDIA? 9:56 p.m. — 800 Block of South Atlantic Avenue Theft. After walking on the beach, the victim said she accidentally left her purse in the park bathroom, but now it was missing. It contained two credit cards, $200 in cash, her car key and her driver’s license. She then became uncertain if she left the purse in the bathroom or dropped it on the beach. She looked at Snapchat photos that she and her friend took on the beach, and they showed she did not have her purse, so she concluded it had been left in the bathroom. It was a rental car, and the company arranged for the car to be towed back to the business.

BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE 2:38 p.m. — 200 Block of South Atlantic Avenue False Name Given and Driving with a Suspended License. The officer conducted a traffic stop because the car’s tag was not visible. The suspect struggled to find her driver’s license and registration. As proof of insurance, she provided a bill from an insurance company, which had a different name than she had given. She became defensive and verbally aggressive. When confronted about the false name, she said she can be whoever she wants to be. She eventually found her out-of-state driver’s license in the truck, and it was found to be suspended. She received several citations.

Ormond Beach Chief Robert "Jesse" Godfrey and officer Jay Brennan, talk with Trails resident Ann Marie Thompson, at the Trails Clubhouse.

Locals meet with police about crime

“There have been 257 car breakins, year-to-date,” Ormond Beach Crime Prevention Officer Jay Brennan said. Brennan, his partner, John Dovine, acting Capt. Lisa Rosenthal, and Ormond Beach Chief of Police Robert “Jesse” Godfrey, were at The Trails clubhouse June 30 to talk to Trails area residents about the increase in crime, and what the residents can do. “The doors were left unlocked on about 90% of the vehicles entered, in the city of Ormond Beach,” Godfrey said. “This year alone we have already had 18 firearms stolen out of unlocked vehicles.” Some of the 22 people who attended the meeting, like Ann Marie Thompson, had been victims themselves. “My car was left open by mistake,” Thompson said. “I came in late and my hands were full, and I forgot to lock the door.” Brennan said locking cars and not leaving items of interest in plain view is the difference between a “soft” target and a “hard” target. Garage door openers are one of the items that should not be left in plain view, Brennan said. “Some people keep the title to their car in the glove box,” he said. “Take it out.” Brennan held up a rectangular card that looked like a ticket, but it wasn’t. Officers who notice opportunities for theft will leave the cards on windshields or at the front door to let the owner know what they observed. “If you are taking groceries out of your car and leave the trunk open, and an officer drives by and sees it, we are going to stop and knock on your door,” he said. “We are proactive. We are not waiting for things to happen – we want to prevent them – but we need all of you to help us with that.” Nextdoor.com, a community media site, is another good tool for neighbors to share things they see, that they don’t feel is right, but Brennan reminded the group that they should also be calling the police. “The next day we come, after 10 cars have been broken into, and we knock on doors,” Brennan said. “Then people tell us they saw something odd, and they didn’t want to bother us — you aren’t bothering us. Call us, we will come and check it out.”

SPORTS Albrecht sisters: mini golf?

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

Emma Albrecht boasts that she can now beat her father, Eric, on a regular basis.

Early luck of the Irish

Ormond local Emma Albrecht has already become one of Notre Dame’s top golfers, after her freshman season.

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

F

or all the kids who gave their dads ties or gift cards to Lowe’s for Father’s Day, local golfer Emma Albrecht upped the ante by presenting her dad, Eric, her caddie, with her Florida State Women’s Amateur Championship on said day, which was also her birthday. “As a parent, it was very special to see and experience how poised, consistent, and confident she was through seven rounds of golf over four days,” Eric Albrecht said. “Emma works very hard on her mental and physical training, as well as her golf swing, and I was so happy for her. It is something she and I will always share and will never forget.” Emma’s parents, Eric and Annie, both former college golfers, have watched the Father Lopez alumna, along with little sister Claire, who golfs for Mainland, go from up-and-comers, who could only get close to winning, to now beating their parents on a more consistent basis.

“Nowadays, it’s usually between my sister and me,” Emma laughed, “but, they’ll tell us that they like to just watch us compete and win more than they like to practice.” While already an accomplished golfer with an exceptional plus-2 handicap, Emma regards the sport as a comforting hobby rather than a potential professional career. Her desire to one day become a doctor plays a role in this, but there is something simple that matters more. “I’ve always had fun playing golf,” she said. “It’s what keeps me motivated, especially with school being the most challenging thing in my life. I look forward to going out to practice; it’s like my free time now—my release from school.” Albrecht usually takes time to unwind on the course for hours daily, and she is reaping the benefits of a love for the sport that she wants to continue to play for a long time. “I want to continue to enjoy the game into my old age,” she said.

Emma Albrecht won the 87th Florida State Women’s Amateur Championship on Father’s Day, with her father, Eric, as the caddie.

“It’s more of something I do for fun, and I love to compete on a team. I don’t necessarily want to turn it into a job, because that can take away some of the fun factors.”

ever mind my Sunday morning golf outing where my best hole was a bogey, and the other eight were plus4s. Never mind the fact that I killed my best birdie opportunity by turning a 5-foot approach onto the green into a three-putt bogey. This isn’t about me; this is about the Albrecht sisters, Emma and Claire. Yeah, yeah, I know they’ve been the best female golfers in the area for the last several years, and I’m aware of their top finishes and accolades. I also know Emma has begun to make a name for herself on the college level at Notre Dame. But, I’m curious to know how they’ll respond against me in 18 holes — of miniature golf. It’s pretty clear that I suck on a regular course, so I have to even the ridiculous odds. While they both score around par, I can’t shoot a 72 in nine holes. And, I’m sure their putting game is probably a lot better than my game, but I think I can get lucky and at least beat one of them. The reality that these sisters are so talented speaks volumes to their heritage. Growing up in a house with a mother who played a number of years on the professional level and dad who not only played in college, but served as LPGA’s vice president of marketing for 12 years, Emma and Claire were destined to become great golfers, and they have lived up to those expectations. But now there is an even bigger expectation that lies before them: me. Will they succumb to my trash talk and lucky makes, or will they trample me with their greatness and laugh me off the course? Their father, Eric, believes I have the edge (smart guy, right?), and I will not let him down. When his girls go on to build extraordinary careers for themselves, I will always look at them as greats that I once beat. I hope to play them at the beginning of the next month, and I will report back on how I won — I mean, how it went.

EMMA ALBRECHT

A POT OF GOLD In her first season with Notre Dame, freshman Emma Albrecht has already broken records and established herself as one of the Fighting Irish top players. She was selected on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Tram. Albrecht finished second on the team with a 74.44 stroke average, which was seventh-lowest single-season mark in program history. She also set Notre Dame’s individual 36-hole school record with a 139/-3. She also had two Top-10 finishes this past season. Emma and Claire Albrecht

The fundraisers are finished, the plane tickets have been purchased and the community is ready to cheer. The only thing remaining is for the Ormond Beach Spikes 12U to pursue a championship at the Cooperstown American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament in Cooperstown, New York. “I’ve coached five state championship teams with the New Smyrna Beach Cougars, but this it for all of us,” said Mark Penning, Spikes head coach. “I think this is the biggest deal for a 12-yearold baseball player, outside of the World Series.” The Spikes will play six pool games that will determine the seeding in their single-elimination tournament. They will be competing against 103 other teams. Last year’s Spikes finished at 16th, which is the best ranking for a Spikes team in the 17 years they’ve made the trip. This year’s players believe they can win it all, and their motivation to win fits perfectly with their age.

This time he really means it. Rick Fraser is going to retire for sure. The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce learned recently that Fraser will retire as executive director at the end of the year, or sooner if a replacement is hired before then. Three years ago, he had plans to call it a career after working as human resources manager at Ocean Design Inc., Command Medical Products and Coronado Paint, and then serving as president of the Center for Business Excellence for 12 years. But his town needed him. The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce was seeking an executive director, and many believed he was the perfect candidate. A chamber member since 1999, he was well-known, having held leadership roles including president of the chamber’s board of directors. “I started to get phone calls,” he said. “I said no, I wanted to retire. I had worked my whole life. But people kept calling me so I said I would look into it.” He eventually decided to take the executive director job and now looks back on what he calls “three fantastic years.” “I was pleased I made the deci-

sion to give it a shot,” he said. “I enjoyed the interaction with the people. We have great board members who are very involved and want nothing but the best. I’ve got a great staff committed to the chamber.” He also said the membership is active, coming out to ribbon cuttings and after hours events. Chamber President (and Observer Publisher) John Walsh said Fraser is known for turning the chamber around. In 2014, there were 723 members and there are now 837. “Prior to Rick, the Chamber ended the year with a deficit,” Walsh said. “Last year we had a budget surplus.” Walsh also said there are now more members seeking board positions. New initiatives started during the Fraser era include the Corporate Challenge, now in its third year; quarterly economic prosperity breakfast meetings; joint afterhours with the Flagler Chamber; and a lunch and learn series. “It’s been a great three years,” Fraser said. Fraser is called “tireless and resiliently enthusiastic about Ormond Beach and the people he works with” by Julia Truilo, a board member and executive director of Ormond MainStreet. “His good nature is contagious,” she said. “That has translated into great relationships for the chamber with both the city of Ormond Beach and other Ormond Beach organizations.”

Bill Navarra, of Realty Pros Assured, a past chamber president, said Fraser did a fantastic job as director. “Since he has been there our relationship with the city improved to levels we never imagined,” he said. “Rick has a way of making everyone feel valued. You’ll always find him with a big smile on his face and a welcoming handshake. He is not only a great director, but I consider him to be a great friend and he will truly be missed. ” Fraser said the chamber has forged a “solid relationship” with city officials and staff, working together on several projects, such as the beautification of North U.S. 1, and he sees a bright future. “Ormond Beach has a great reputation and a great quality of life,” he said. “More and more companies are choosing Ormond Beach as a place to do business.” Fraser now looks at a retirement filled with travel and “family stuff.” He has four grandchildren, and wants to spend time with them. Fraser moved to Ormond Beach 25 years ago. “I intend to be part of the future. I may do volunteer work,” he said. “I love Ormond Beach and I have no plans to go anywhere else.”
