Frank Villante was supposed to be out of work for a few weeks for a simple knee replacement surgery. After nearly three years of fighting infections, paralysis and almost death, Frank is finally back. After the general manager of LuLu’s Oceanside Grill found out that his knee had been infected from the surgery, he learned how much he really hated sitting at Cyrus Fagan is a dangerous quarterback, but he prefers playing defense; he’d rather hit people, than be hit. They induced me into a coma for seven weeks because all my organs were shutting down.” When Villante woke up from his coma, he couldn’t move or feel his legs. The doctors believed he had a stroke while induced and would never regain feeling in his legs again.
“I was in a wheelchair, and the doctor told me I’d never walk again,” Villante said. “I turned around and left because I wasn’t going to take that for an answer.” Through intense physical therapy, Villante had to learn how to eat, swallow and walk again. Currently, he uses a walker to get around but says that it won’t be long before he walks without aide again. “It’s been a long recovery process,” Villante said. “I’m a very determined person. ‘Can’t’ is not in my vocabulary. Circuit Judge J. David Walsh looks at retirement as a chance to retrace parts of the long, winding road of his career. There will be reunions with the brotherhood of aviators and bombardiers from his naval career, and a return to the music of his youth. Walsh, an Ormond Beach resident, has announced he will retire
as judge next February after serving in the Seventh Judicial Circuit, which includes Flagler, Putnam, St. Johns and Volusia counties, including four years as chief judge. He practiced civil litigation in Volusia County for 25 years before his appointment as a judge in 2001. Since 2012, he has served in the felony, child dependency and drug court divisions in Flagler County. “I enjoyed being a trial judge,”
he said recently. “I enjoyed trying cases and reading and applying the law. I found it to be engaging.” Some cases stick in his mind. One child dependency case successfully reached an adoption, even though the adoption had to be handled by phone because the child was in the hospital. “That child came back to visit me years later,” he said. “I think he was 5 years old. He was with his adoptive mother. We had a wonderful visit. It really makes you feel good to know you touched SEE JUDGE PAGE 10

The identification was done through dental records. The results of the autopsy have not been released. The girlfriend of the victim, Sara Schmidt, of Apopka, entered the house on July 3 after not hearing from him. After seeing a body wrapped in a blanket, she contacted neighbors. They saw Garrett Schroeder, the son of Christian Schroeder, walking away from the house, and then they called 911. Garrett Schroeder was found dead July 7, in Tallahassee, having apparently shot himself.

It’s not just a good idea ... it’s the law.
130 NEW LAWS T
he Florida Legislature passed about 130 new laws this year, many of which went into effect July 1. Among the more controversial are a 24-hour waiting period on abortions — that one has already been challenged by the American Civil Liberties Union — and the repeal of the state’s gay adoption ban. Beer fans can celebrate a law allowing the filling of 64-ounce beer containers called “growlers,” and aerial drone fans are barred from using the gadgets for snooping. Letter carriers in rural areas have been exempted from seat belt laws while on their routes, and the state has specified protocol for isolating patients to control the spread of disease. A collection of the more notable, controversial or odd bills passed this year is listed below. The laws summarized briefly on this page went into effect July 1 unless otherwise noted. — JONATHAN SIMMONS
Education HB 7069
Reduces the number of standardized tests students have to take, and revises a requirement for the uniform opening date of public schools to no earlier than Aug. 10. See flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2015/7069.
Hazardous Walking Conditions HB 41:
“Gabby’s Law for Student Safety” lets school districts make formal requests to fix hazardous walking conditions, and requires the government entities with jurisdiction over the road with the hazard to add the hazard to their next five-year transportation work plan or specify why they won’t. See flsenate.gov/ Session/Bill/2015/0041.
Alcoholic Beverages SB 186
Lets a brewer or vendor fill 64ounce beer containers called “growlers” for drinking off site, places a cap on the number of vendor licenses a brewer can hold, limits the size of cups for beer tastings to 3.5 ounces and requires that tastings be held inside. See flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2015/0186.
Informed Patient Consent to Terminate Pregnancy HB 633
Requires a 24-hour waiting period before a woman can have an abortion and states that an ultrasound must be performed to
ONLINE
verify the fetus’ gestational age. There are exceptions for cases of rape, incest, domestic violence, human trafficking and certain medical conditions, if documentation like police reports or medical records is provided. See flsenate.gov/Session/ Bill/2015/0633.
Interception of Wire, Oral, or Electronic Communication HB 7001:
Allows, in certain cases, a minor who is recording someone committing, stating an intention to commit, or confessing to committing an illegal act of physical or sexual abuse against the minor to be exempt from laws that would otherwise make the recording of a conversation without both parties’ consent illegal. See flsenate.gov/Session/ Bill/2015/7001.
Experimental Treatments for Terminal Conditions HB 269
Lets terminally ill patients access certain “Phase 1” clinical trial drugs not yet approved by the FDA, and protects the health professionals or manufacturers who provide them from liability. See flsenate.gov/Session/ Bill/2015/0269.
Surveillance by a Drone SB 76
Bans people or agencies from using aerial drones to capture images of privately owned real property or its owners or occupants without written consent in cases where there’s a reasonable

expectation of privacy, usually when the people would not have been visible from the ground. There are exceptions for law enforcement agency counterterror use, and for uses like aerial mapping, utility service maintenance and use by a property appraiser’s office. See flsenate. gov/Session/Bill/2015/0766.
Florida Civil Rights Act, Pregnancy SB 982
Amends the Florida Civil Rights Acts, which already prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicap, or marital status, to also prohibit discrimination on the basis of pregnancy. The Act applies to employment and professional certification and licensing; and to food establishments, lodging and public accommodations. See flsenate. gov/Session/Bill/2015/0982.
Rural Letter Carriers SB 160
Exempts rural letter carriers for the United States Postal Service from safety belt usage requirements while they’re on their routes. (Went into effect May 22.) See flsenate.gov/Session/ Bill/2015/0160.
Online Voter Application SB 228
Requires the Division of Elections to create an online voter registration system, which must compare the voter information submitted online with Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles records. The Division of Elections must make a formal report of its progress in creating the new system by Jan. 1, 2016, and potential voters must be able to register and update registrations online by Oct. 1, 2017. The law authorizes $1.8 million in appropriations for the new system. See flsenate. gov/Session/Bill/2015/0228.
Adoption and Foster Care HB 7013
Deletes a prohibition on gay people adopting children, provides for a $5,000 benefit for government employees who adopt foster children or a $10,000 benefit if those children have special needs, and states that a person cannot be banned from adopting because they want to home school the adopted child. See flsenate.gov/Session/ Bill/2015/7013.
Rep. Fred Costello
COSTELLO
MEETS CONSTITUENTS Gerrymandering and Amendment 1 were among topics addressed. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR
There was a good cross section of opinions at State Rep. Fred Costello’s Town Hall meeting on July 8 at City Hall, as the former mayor met the public. Costello, who represents District 25, said there were 871 bills filed in the House, with 268 passed; and 881 bills filed in the Senate, with 190 passed. About 130 of the bills passed both the House and the Senate to be come law. Costello said the state passed a $78.7 billion balanced budget, which was reduced to $78.2 billion after vetoes. The budget contains $400 million in cuts, but Costello said it’s hypocritical to point to these as cuts, while $500 million was added to local property taxes, mandated by the state. He believes only local officials should make decisions on property tax. Last year, Florida voters approved Amendment 1, which is designed for environmental protection. Costello read the Amendment, and pointed out that it says, “acquire, restore, improve, and manage conservation lands.” “People pick out that one word, ‘acquire,’” he said. He said the words “restore and improve” mean that the money can be used for such things as removing septic tanks in sensitive areas. Gerrymandering was another topic. An audience member pointed out that Costello’s district contains Ormond Beach and the beachside cities, but no other cities on the mainland, including areas known for low income. Costello said he declined to be on the committee that redrew the districts. “I’m sensitive to what you’re saying, but I didn’t design it,” he said. Of all the vetoes, Costello said he was most disappointed with the rejection of $20 million for three charity clinics, which would have included the Jesus Clinic in Daytona Beach. As a dentist, Costello had signed up for the clinic. “If we don’t have Medicaid expansion, why in the world would that be vetoed?” he asked.

After five years, Ormond Beach government will see new faces
Ormond Beach
Candidates are already announcing, more than a year before the 2016 election. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR
The Ormond Beach City Commission has remained unchanged since 2010, but it will have a different look after next year’s election. In a recent flurry of announcements, it’s clear that a new person will be sitting in the mayor’s seat at the dais, as well as the seat for Zone 4 commissioner. Mayor Ed Kelley has announced he will challenge Doug Daniels, who plans to run again for the District 4 seat on the Volusia County Council; and City Commissioner Bill Partington, who represents Zone 4, announced last week he will run for Kelley’s vacated mayor seat. Harold Briley, a Realtor with Adams Cameron and longtime member of the Planning Board, announced recently that he will run for Partington’s vacated seat. And there’s plenty of time for more candidates, as the election is more than a year away.
FORTUNATO PARK
Fortunato Park is a 2.6 acre riverfront park located just east of the Granada Bridge across from Rockefeller Gardens. It offers scenic views of the Halifax River and is home to the Ormond Hotel Cupola which is a historic landmark. Paved walking trails surround the grounds.

Kelley was elected mayor in 2010 and re-elected in 2012 and 2014. He served two terms as a commissioner in the 1990s, and was elected commissioner for Zone 3 in 2005. In an interview, Kelley said he hopes to increase communication and cooperation between the county and the cities as a county councilman. “Volusia County is poised for great things to happen, if we can get the cities and the county working together,” he said. “In the past we’ve had divisiveness and sniping.” District 4 includes Ormond Beach, Holly Hill and part of Daytona Beach, and Kelley promises to make the county more responsive to their needs. For example, he said it took nearly five years to work out the agreement that gave Ormond Beach control over North U.S. 1. “It should not take that long, if we work together,” he said. Kelley has worked on countywide issues as chairman of Volusia Council of Governments. That organization had been replaced
with the Volusia County Roundtable, and he is the elected chairman. “We’ve discussed the issues of homelessness, water, transportation and beautification. All of those affect us,” he said. Kelley retired in 2001 after a 30-year career with Hawaiian Tropic of Ormond Beach. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Belmont College in Nashville. COUNTY COUNCILMAN DOUG DANIELS
Doug Daniels said in a written statement that he knocked on almost every door in his last election, and he plans to knock on them again. Daniels, 62, is a long-time Daytona Beach business attorney who entered politics for the first time in 2012, winning his District 4 county council seat “No one has done more for their district or for the county,” he said. Daniels points to his work on developing Andy Romano Park; supporting jobs projects such as the Trader Joe’s distribution center and the proposed LPGA interchange development; saving Holly Hill’s river redevelopment and dog park; and giving Ormond Beach development and beautification control over U.S. 1. Daniels plans to pursue economic development, improved human services, environmental protection and a strong code of ethics for senior county staff and elected officials. Daniels, who also lives in Ormond Beach, graduated from Florida State University College of Law. He is a business transaction and business litigation attorney with an office in Daytona Beach. He was born and raised in Havana, outside of Tallahassee. COMMISSIONER BILL PARTINGTON
Bill Partington has served on the City Commission for Zone 4 since 2003. He has also been elected deputy mayor by the commission and is currently president of the Volusia League of Cities. Partington was raised in Ormond Beach and graduated from local schools. He later
earned a law degree from Loyola School of Law in New Orleans. Growing up in Ormond Beach, Partington said there was nothing west of Nova Road. Since then, quality neighborhoods have developed. “We’ve had a tradition of good growth and smart growth,” he said. “That made Ormond a great city, and I want to continue that.” As mayor, he said he wants to keep taxes low while delivering services to residents. He also wants to see Ormond Crossings and North U.S. 1 developed in a way that keeps the city beautiful and economically vibrant. Partington currently serves as an assistant public defender and division chief for the Felony Trial Division for Florida’s Seventh Judicial Circuit. Previously, he ran a solo private law practice in Ormond Beach, and has served as an assistant public defender and assistant state attorney. HAROLD BRILEY
Harold Briley, member of the Planning Board, plans to run for the Zone 4 seat on the City Commission. Briley, 42, was raised in Ormond. After graduating from Seabreeze High School in 1990, he was a messenger in the Florida House of Representatives for Rep. Dick Graham. Briley has served on the Planning Board since 2011, which is appointed by the City Commission. Previously, he served on the board from 1996 to 2006. A Realtor for Adams Cameron and Co., Briley is a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He serves on Ormond Beach MainStreet, and in the 1990s, he was on the Downtown Restoration Task Force, a precursor to MainStreet. Briley is happy with city leadership in recent years. “I’m excited about the direction of the city, and I want to keep Ormond Beach a special place to live,” he said. “We have a great commission and our city staff is second to none.” In 2001 and 2002, he served on the Land Development Code Rewrite Committee. After years of serving on boards and committees, Briley sees the City Commission as the next step for community service. “I really love Ormond Beach,” he said.

Ormond gains Greek restaurant The business is owned by a 21-year-old. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR
Those who have had a taste of Greek cuisine at the annual Greek Festival in Daytona Beach now can try an entire menu. Greektown Taverna has opened at 150 N. Nova Road in the Ormond Beach Marketplace shopping center, where Steve’s Famous Diner operated until closing a few months ago. It’s owned by 21-year-old Taki Dimitrakopoulos, who is being aided his father, George, a longtime restaurateur who operated Byron’s Grill in Daytona Beach until he sold it in 2007. “I’m now helping my son,” the elder Dimitrakopoulos, who created the menu, said recently. In fact, it’s a family affair at the new restaurant, as Taki’s sister, Sia, and brother, Petros, both work at the restaurant, as well as a cousin, Georgia Paspalakis. They are gratified that they have already developed a following among the local Greek population. “It’s very important to get support from the Greek community,” George Dimitrakopoulos said. Although their goal is to be traditional, Taki Dimitrakopoulos said menu items will cater to those not familiar with Greek food, with “introductory” dishes. “I think with all ethnic food, you need to ease into it,” he said. “Once they try it they love it.”
“It’s a variety, and you can’t really put a label on it.”
They’ve only had a soft opening, with no advertising, and plan a grand opening on July 15. Taki Dimitrakopoulos said they want to be sure and be ready when the crowds start to come to the 151seat restaurant. There’s also a market at the restaurant, where guests can purchase grape leaves, cheeses, preserves, olive oil, coffee and other items for Greek cooking. He said there’s no real way to describe Greek cooking, because every region of the country is

different. In the north of Greece, they have heartier fare, such as moussaka, and the coast has a lot of seafood. “It’s a variety and you can’t really put a label on it,” he said. His grandparents, on both sides, were born in Greece, and his parents are from Canada. Taki Dimitrakopoulos graduated from Seabreeze High School in 2012, where he attended the culinary academy. He later graduated from Daytona State College and wants to further his education in hospi-
tality management at the University of Central Florida. He also learned a lot about the business by helping out in the family restaurant growing up. He said he loves the location, near a major intersection with neighborhoods all around. Growing up in the business, he said restaurants have always been part of his life. “I love taking care of guests and making people happy,” he said. Call 944-9526.

Kabobs are my new favorite word/meal Observer ‘Can you kabob avocados?’ and other secrets from the grill.
EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
Let me start off by saying, I’m a terrible cook. People are constantly slapping my hand away from knives, and one time I filled an entire kitchen with smoke just trying to boil water. But I finally think I’ve found an area of culinary creating that I could actually be pretty good at. Bonus points, it’s really fun to say: kabobing. What is kabobing you ask? In the most basic caveman terms, it’s taking everything you love to eat, stabbing it with a skewer and throwing it on the grill. The stabbing is

and sour sauce. It was great because there was virtually no cooking involved, except for the sauce, which, technically, my roommate, Danielle, made. Now before you worry too much about me burning myself on a massive grill,
never fear. We own a miniature grill that is barely taller than my ankles. Which is perfect because I’m kind of terrified of fire. We also keep it really close to the pool in case something goes horribly wrong, like I always assume it will. Side note: We have no idea where this grill actually came from. It’s not Danielle’s, and it’s not mine, and it doesn’t seem to belong to the previous tenant. It sort of just appeared in our backyard one day. So thank you, anonymous donor, for giving us the perfect grill. The first experiment went swimmingly. Grilled pineapple is kind of the best thing on the planet. And, to top it off, we ate it in the pool, so there was a definite feeling of fanciness involved. Since then, we’ve kabobed beef, mushrooms, onions, zucchini and even avocado — all winners. I’ve still got a few items in my pantry left that I’d like to kabob (does grilled chocolate chip protein bars sound good to anyone?), but please feel free to shoot me some ideas!

Of all the advances in technology through the years, probably the device with the biggest effect on our lives has been the phone. I can remember, back in the mid-1900s, when the house phone would ring. You would hear, “I got it … I got it,” throughout the house as family members raced to answer it. Usually, after answering, a disappointed voice would say, “It’s for you,” because it was not the call they were expecting. But today, when the cell phone rings in our pocket, belt or purse, we know the call is for us. That must be why we never leave home without it. When I plunged into the smartphone era, and the 21st
century, I naively asked if it came with a manual. No, I was told, all information is available in the phone. Good, just learn to use the phone so you can learn to use it. But of course, a wealth of information is available on the Internet and from other smartphone users. And the phone is a fascinating little box to explore. SOME TIPS
Recently, I learned about the Control Center, which is available by flipping it up from the bottom of the screen. You don’t even have to laboriously punch in that four-digit code. You can access the flashlight, clock (which includes a timer, stopwatch and other items), calculator, and camera. There’s also airplane mode, brightness control and other handy features. My goal is to learn more, and make this little device earn its monthly payment. However, I remember the first rule of training a dog is that you must be smarter than the dog.

How smart is too smart? Learning to use the smartphone turns out to be a lifetime project of research and discovery.
“If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”
I wonder if that’s true with smartphones. I hope not. WHO IS SMARTER?
The iPhone reminds me of the novel, “I Robot,” by Isaac Asimov, about a machine that gained self-awareness. I don’t think the iPhone has a selfidentity, but I’m not too sure about Siri. I know it can be too smart. On my Facebook page, as a joke, I listed my employer as Mayfield Dairy Farm, which was my first job out of high school. The iPhone picked up on this from Facebook, and now when I call some people, it identifies me as “Mayfield Dairy Farm.” But I really wonder who is getting the last laugh here. Is it me because I fooled the system, or the iPhone making me look foolish for not recording my real job? But that’s ridiculous. The machines are not that smart yet, I don’t think. I recall the days of being
unreachable. People would ride a bus and gaze out the window, alone with their thoughts. They would hike through the woods with no way of being bothered. Today, people call from the grocery store aisle and explain in a loud voice that they are going to buy creamy instead of crunchy peanut butter. Or, they call from a Ferris wheel because they absolutely must share the moment with someone else. Of course, there’s always the option to leave the phone at home and not carry it around. But what if I get that call I’ve been expecting?

PAY DAY OR PAWN DAY 11:20 a.m. — 1300 Block of West Granada Boulevard. Theft: The witness said he thinks he pawned a stolen item without knowing it. The suspect picked him up after work and drove him to a pawn shop. The suspect said he didn’t get paid yet, and asked the witness to pawn a tool. The witness pawned it using his own driver’s license. After they left the store, the witness asked the suspect where he got the tool, and he said he stole it from a home improvement store. The officer was able to obtain surveillance footage of the theft at the store, because he knew the time frame the crime likely occurred. He also obtained footage of the suspect at the pawn shop. The serial number of the tool at the pawn shop matched the stolen tool.

PLEASE HELP. WE’RE OUT OF DRUGS. 1:05 p.m. — 1400 Block of West Granada Boulevard. Trespassers: A couple was walking around a grocery store parking lot with a gas can, asking people for money to buy gas. When questioned by a police officer, one of persons admitted the money was actually for narcotics. One of the suspects was on probation for sale and delivery of meth, and the officer contacted his parole officer. They were both trespassed from the business.

DOG CAN’T BE BRIBED 4 a.m. — 400 Block of Cherryhill Drive. Burglary: The victim heard his dog, a bullmastiff, barking, so he went out into the garage. He heard the fence outside rattle and saw that his Kawasaki motorcycle was halfway out the side door, leaning against the doorjamb. He said he leaves the side door ajar, so his dog can go in and out. The garage door was closed. The officer and victim walked outside and found a chicken thigh lying in the grass. The victim said he believed the suspect threw the chicken over the fence hoping to occupy the dog while he stole the motorcycle.

CITY BANNER SIGN MALFUNCTION 4:03 p.m. — West Granada Boulevard and North Washington Street. Information: The victim said he was driving on West Granada Boulevard in the outside lane when he heard a loud banging and crashing noise on the passenger side of his vehicle. He saw that his passenger side mirror was missing. After stopping, he saw scratches on the side of the car. The officer determined that a cable had come detached from the Fourth of July Celebration banner sign. A community service officer tied it to a street sign. The driver said he was mostly concerned with getting his mirror replaced and he could probably find one at a junk yard.

Judge recalls missions over North Vietnam someone in a positive way.” Walsh said he is an adoptive father of two, so cases such as that can be especially touching. There are also cases that are unpleasant to deal with, such as murder cases, where even witnesses and jurors are affected. He said he made sure the cases were tried fairly. “I always have strived to be polite and fair to all litigants, to be prepared, and to rule in accord with the law and the facts presented to me,” he said. MORE JUDGES ARE NEEDED
The part he did not enjoy, he said, was the judiciary in the seventh circuit being understaffed, especially in Flagler County. “We are undermanned in judges, and it’s been that way for many years,” he said. “The legislature had not created any new judgeships for our circuit even though we qualify.” He said Florida ranks about 40th among the states in money dedicated to the court system. Flagler is once again a growing county, and the legal system is required to do more with the same number of judges. “With that growth comes civil cases, family cases and criminal,” he said. “We just don’t have the manpower we should.”

MISSIONS OVER VIETNAM
One of his plans for retirement is to see old friends at Navy reunions. After attending the University of South Carolina on a Naval ROTC scholarship, he served on a destroyer for seven months and then was trained as a flight officer. From 1969 to 1973, he was bombardier/navigator on an A-6 Intruder, flying 150 combat missions over North Vietnam. “What we did was pretty difficult,” he said. “We flew single plane attack missions. We lost a lot of planes.” He said during a mission over enemy territory, you don’t think of the danger, because you’re concentrating on navigation, finding the target, and then getting out before getting shot down. After his two combat cruises on the USS Midway, he decided he should get into “something safer,” and got a law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law. He served in the intelligence area in the Navel Reserve, retiring as captain after 15 years. He’s looking forward to the next Navy reunion, in two years in San Diego. He describes the veterans as a close brotherhood. MAKING MUSIC
The musical part of his life has been in the background during his
BIZ BUZZ
law career, but there could be a crescendo. As a youth, he played percussion in the school band as well as a dance band. He also played xylophone, piano and guitar, and his dad always wanted him to keep up with his music. “When I retire I can get back to working on those things,” he said. “That’s definitely something I want to do.” During his law career, he would play music only for relaxation, but it could be a bigger part of his life in the future. While in New Jersey at a niece’s wedding, he saw a bluegrass band. “I’m thinking of doing something like that one day,” he said. “A little bluegrass or country band would be fun.”
Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center has selected Julie Adams Rand to serve as director of Florida Hospital Memorial Foundation, the fundraising arm of the company. Most recently, she served as director of athletic development for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. For 10 years, she was development director of the NewsJournal Center and was responsible for the $30 million capital campaign to construct it. Rand serves as board member for the United Way, Food Brings Hope and Surfscape Contemporary Dance Company. She is a past president of the Junior League of Daytona Beach and past board member for the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens, the Daytona Beach/Halifax Area
Chamber and the Museum of Arts and Sciences.

CYRUS FAGAN, on why he prefers playing safety, rather than quarterback
FAGAN ON HITS:
GIVING IS BETTER THAN TAKING
File photos by Jeff Dawsey
While Cyrus Fagan is a top recruit at the safety position, he may even be better on offense. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR
I
t is highly likely that one of the best quarterbacks in the area will only play a few snaps as a backup, unless an injury occurs. Although he’s heralded as the second best safety in the country in the 2007 recruiting class, Mainland’s Cyrus Fagan may be just as good at the quarterback position. Toward the end of last season, I was told by another writer that Mainland’s star defender just might be the best quarterback in the area. Because I had occasionally seen him play offense, I laughed off the statement, until I saw him start in the spring game against the University Titans, where he led three touchdown drives that all finished with touchdown passes. He made the position look easy, the way he scrambled past defenders and connected on most of his passes. What was even more intriguing than his play was when he sailed a pass longer than desired, and his receiver was hit hard and was forced to leave the game. An
DID YOU KNOW?
angered Fagan yelled out, “That’s why I hate playing quarterback!” While the game didn’t count, I witnessed two teams give a season-game effort, with their best players on the field, and, in the midst of him having his way with a pretty good defense, Fagan proclaimed to everyone his true feelings about the position nearly every football player would love to have the skills to play. “I have to do it for the team,” said Fagan in an interview, “but, I love defense.” When he played Pop Warner, his coach saw him throwing the football around with other teammates, and his ball always seemed to go farther than the others, including the quarterback. Realizing he had a potential gem, his coach began to chisel him into a better quarterback, teaching him the ins-and-outs of the position, but he couldn’t change Fagan’s defensive mind; he was raised to play on that side of the ball. “I’m just not a quarterback,” Fagan said. “I grew up watching Ray Lewis, and I love to hit people like him.” When Fagan was 11 years old,
Cyrus Fagan is ranked as the No. 2 (No. 1 in Florida) safety in the country and No. 31 player overall in the 2017 class. The fourstar recruit has received offers from over 20 of the best football schools in the nation, including Florida State, Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Florida and USC, to name a few.
Cyrus Fagan scrambles and throws a touchdown pass in Mainland’s spring game.

he made what he considers his first big hit. On punt return as a blocker, Fagan hit a kid with a crack-back block, and there went any aspirations of playing quarterback. He grew a love for giving licks, not taking them. “At first, I was worried about the kid, but he got up and walked to sideline on his own,” Fagan said. “Then, I celebrated with one of my teammates, and that sparked my love to only play defense.” It can be said that anyone having the number of recruits would pass up an opportunity to star as a quarterback, but that’s not the way Fagan thinks. He made the statement that, even if he wasn’t highly recruited as a defender, he would still choose defense over the quarterback position.
“When you catch an interception, you’re taking something from the opposing team,” Fagan said, “and, especially if you return it for a touchdown. That’s huge. Throwing a touchdown isn’t easy, but you get used to it, if you do it a lot. Interceptions don’t come easy, especially pick-sixes.” Fagan had five interceptions last year, and he’s still waiting on his first interception return for a touchdown. Fagan has become one of the best defenders in the nation, and, It doesn’t hurt that he has learned from other great ball defenders, like NFL pro Ricardo Allen, a former Mainland defender. Allen, whom Fagan calls a big brother, taught him a lot and has inspired him to make it to the big leagues.
hey’re ranked 19th in the country. Other schools’ best players are migrating to play for them. The best colleges in the nation are keeping close watch on most of the players, and everyone’s getting top-tier offers. This past weekend, the Mainland Buccaneers took their talents to Ocala to compete in the third-annual Neo Athletics 7v7 Summer Showdown, and they returned to Volusia County as the champions. “Right when Mainland stepped off the bus, they looked like they were on a mission and about business,” said John Ivory, one of the owners of the tournament. “There were other teams that looked good out there, but no one looked like Mainland.” The Buccaneers stormed through their competition and finished off Lake Weir 32-14 to win it all. “I felt like winning that 7v7 tournament was a great stepping stone heading into the season,” said Randy Baker, Mainland’s top receiver. Star quarterback Denzel Houston and Jachai Polite took offensive and defensive MVP honors, and running back Adrian Killins, who was ranked as the sixth best prospect at the event, according to XOS Digital recruiting specialist Dwight Thomas, made the All-Tournament team, along with Cyrus Fagan. Although they didn’t play, Mainland’s offensive linemen turned heads during the Linemen Challenge. Highly recruited Marcus Tatum won the one-on-one pass protection and power ball competitions, and, at least one offensive lineman finished in the Top 3 in every event. Other standout linemen, according to Ivory, were Kevin McCrary, Daniel Kelly, Demarco Terry and Twishawn Glenn. “The line on both sides of the ball at Mainland was the most impressive part of their team,” Ivory added. “Not many teams are fortunate to have that kind of depth. You can have all the talent in the world outside the hashes, but, if you don’t have what it takes to win in the trenches, you don’t stand a chance to win a state championship. Mainland has what it takes.” Mainland seems to have no weakness but strengths in every area. So, what does that mean for the team that has come up short every year against Miami Central? Is this the year the Bucs will finally get championship No. 2? Only time will tell. The dawn of the new season is closely approaching.

It’s moments like the one Amara Williamson experienced Tuesday, July 14, at Ormond Lanes that make free kids bowling for worth it for owner Fran Todd and his employees. Late in the afternoon, enjoying the game with her father, Joseph, and younger sister, Amara Williamson used the side rails and threw the ball as hard as she could down the lane. After bouncing down the lane and ricocheting off the rails, the ball finally made it to the pins and knocked each of them down. So excited, she dashed over to her father and jumped into his arms, and they hugged as if they were reuniting for the first time in years. Joseph Williamson captured the moment with photos and videos, and that will be a memory they will never forget, thanks to Ormond Lanes’ Kids Bowl Free Program. “The program gives people who may never play the chance to experience the game and to have fun with their families,” said Connie Shockley, the alley’s administrator. “A lot of times, we get ‘I never knew this place was here.’” The KBFP began on May 1, and it will continue throughout the summer until Aug. 31. Since its beginning, families from surrounding areas have taken up
the offer to make a day around bowling, pizza, soda pitchers and arcade games. On a weekly basis, Ormond Lanes welcomes summer camps and other large groups to play. Because of this program, many families have become bowling families, which would have never occurred, unless they were able to receive a large discount to play. “When the place gets packed, we turn off the regular lights and turn on all of the black lights,” Shockley said. “When they see how the balls glow in the dark, and all the other colors, they just scream. We also turn on the music and let them rock ’n’ roll. Everyone has so much fun, and that’s what we want to happen here at Ormond Lanes.”

Hilton Ramirez in his natural habitat — surrounded by beautiful women. Ramirez is the last surviving band member of the Xavier Cugat Orchestra. He played saxophone in the band that was world-famous during the 1940s and ’50s.
Ormond’s most eligible bachelor Ormond Beach resident Hilton Ramirez reveals his secrets to success in love, in honor of his 102nd birthday. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
If you’re looking for Hilton Ramirez, you might want to try the dance floor. The now 102-year-old former musician and dancer spends most of his days winning over the ladies at the Ormond Beach Senior Center with his killer moves. Despite a scary fall that has him currently using a walker, he is still juggling a few girlfriends on his arm. Ramirez opened up to The Observer about his active love life.
HOW DO YOU GET ALL THESE WOMEN TO LIKE YOU?
I don’t know, they just look at me and wave, and I tell them to come over. I ask them if I can go out with them. Sometimes I can and sometimes I can’t. YOU CAN’T?!
Sometimes you have to wait until they are finished with their other boyfriend. HOW MANY GIRLFRIENDS DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE?
Five. One is here today.
DO THEY KNOW ABOUT EACH OTHER? ARE THEY COOL WITH IT?
Oh yeah, they know. I told them they could dance with someone else if they want to. I don’t get jealous. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN MARRIED?
Three times. It was tough. I don’t know how I did it, but I did it. WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO MAKE UP WITH SOMEONE?
Bring her flowers. Sometimes I would come home with lipstick on my collar on purpose. They would get really mad. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR GUYS THAT WANT TO BE A LADIES MAN LIKE YOU?
Be a musician.
The lovely Ruth Sheldon was one of the many lucky ladies to share a slow dance with the birthday boy.

SIXTIES: Taking over Rockefeller Gardens Class of ’69 is set to be the first of three bands in the city of Ormond Beach’s ‘Summer Sounds’ series. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
It’s time to dig out the tie-dye and peace signs you’ve got buried in your closet — the ’60s are coming back to Ormond Beach. The first concert in the city’s Summer Sounds series will feature ’60s tribute band Class of ’69, who will perform classics from popular genres of the decade, including Motown, Woodstock, pop rock, British Invasion and country. Made of Dennis Copa, Roland Via, Dan Emerson and Chuck Peterson, this newly founded band has already gained popularity with their collection of covered classics. “We’ve been together two years,” Via said. “There’s so much music from that era, and most of it is good dance music, so it makes it really easy to engage the audience. For the older people, it’s nostalgic, and the younger people like it because it’s beat-friendly.” The foursome first had the idea for a decade tribute band after seeing the movie, “Wrecking Crew,” a documentary about a group of studio and session musicians that played anonymously on many records in Los Angeles, California during the 1960s. “We thought it was time to put togethers a ’60s act because it’s just a huge catalog of music,” said Via, who is also the former mayor of Holly Hill. “Tribute
bands are very popular right now, but instead of becoming a tribute band of a specific act, we became a tribute band of the music of that era.” Together, the musicians dress up in their ’60s clothes and try to get the audience as pumped up as they are to remember a classic era of music. Audience members who see their shows are encouraged to dress up, as well. “It’ll surprise people, the wealth and depth of the music we do,” Via said. “That’s the fun part, watching people’s faces when we do this. They are remembering and singing right along. It’s a great time.” For more information on Class of ’69, visit their website at classof69band.com.
