+ Ormond woman named president of Avenues 12 Realty Pros Real Estate Agent Caryn Baker is doing more than just selling houses — she’s helping to create recovery homes for women with substance abuse issues. In June, Baker was appointed president of the board of directors of Avenues 12, a program that offers two recovery houses to help women with substance abuse issues become productive members of society. “We’re opening sober apartments Oct. 16 this year,” Baker said. “Our next goal is to open a recovery home that is specifically for women veterans.” Baker said she joined the board when it first was established because she’s dealt with substance abuse in her personal life. When Peggy Farmer was executive director of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce, she would talk to people at the Visitors Center who had entered the city on
West Granada Boulevard. They would often mention the nice looking medians. “They would say they can tell what kind of community we are by our beautification
efforts,” she said. That’s why she believes the agreement between the city, county and local businesses to begin improving the medians along North U.S.

Airplane strikes deer on runway at Ormond Beach airport The plane crashed after hitting a deer that wandered onto runway. The Ormond Beach Police responded to a crash at the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport around 4 a.m. Aug. 2, after hearing that a plane struck a deer during its landing. According to the police report, the left propeller hit the animal and caused the plane’s front landing gear to collapse. Thankfully, Pilot Evan Zrodlowski, of Daytona Beach, and passengers Jim Raley, Dawn Raley and Courtney Raley of Ormond Beach, were not injured. Airport Manager Steve Lichliter said this type of incident was unusual. “To my knowledge, this has never happened before,” Lichliter said. Though the pilot was unable to be reached for comment, the police report states that the control tower at the airport was off at that time, and Lichliter said darkness could have been a factor. “The Ormond Beach airport does have a control tower,” Lichliter said. “But it only operates from 7 in the morning till 7 in the evening. It was dark, and the wind was blowing.” After Officer William Bowes arrived and talked to the passengers on the plane, he parked his vehicle behind the crashed plane and turned its emergency lights on to prevent any other aircrafts from landing. The status of the deer is unknown.

Former Daytona State student Marcella Perego is living the sweet life. Now the retail manager of Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York City, Perego was recently the youngest ever to be named to Zagat’s “30 Under 30” in New York Hospitality list. “I always knew that working hard Marcella Perego would pay off,” Perego said in a press release. “It’s been quite the fairytale.” Perego graduated Daytona State College in May 2013 with her associate degree in culinary management. When she graduated she was also dual enrolled at Seabreeze High School and earned her high school diploma a week later. Another week passed and she moved to New York City and was hired as a cashier at Dominique Ansel Bakery. The website Buzzfeed recently named Dominique Ansel No. 1 among “The Top 25 Bakeries Around the World to See Before You Die.” “Without DSC, it would have been much more difficult for me,” Perego said. “Knowing the industry terminology alone before I got the job was a great help, but also understanding the techniques allows me to have more reasonable communications with the back of the house when we’re experimenting with new products. PRETTY IN PINK? Wayne Grant | News Editor
Barbara Sandberg paints a picture for each of her home sellers to say goodbye. Barbara Sandberg likes to give back. Whether it’s planning an art show for a sick friend or adopting a scruffy mutt rescue from Hurricane Katrina, she’s always working on a way to help others. She even gives back in her job as a real estate agent for Better Way Realty in Ormond Beach. With each sale, Sandberg gives her sellers a painting of their house so they can always remember their home. “I don’t know what drew me to art,” Sandberg said. “I really didn’t have a particular thing until I got into real estate.” Sandberg said she has painted home renderings for her clients since she got into real estate in 1979. “I’ve probably done a few hundred,” she said. “I started doing renderings to make people happy. I felt their pain when they were leaving a house that they had been in for so long, so I wanted to give the seller a memory.” Sandberg said the majority of her clients are grateful for their paintings, but if the seller is leaving the

Sandberg, who grew up on Beach Street in Holly Hill, enjoys being able to paint some of the historic and unique houses she used to drive past. It was in that town that she first discovered her love for art. “I started art in Mainland High School,” Sandberg said. “When I graduated, I got a scholarship to Boston University Fine Arts. I really loved my art teacher.” Thanks to her riverside childhood, Sandberg has some fond
memories of the area. When she was 10, her mother saved a park from being built into more houses by standing in front of a large oak tree until the city’s bulldozer backed off. “She wanted to preserve the way of life here,” Sandberg said. “She didn’t want future generations to miss out on the natural beauty.” Sandberg now lives on the opposite side of the Halifax River with her husband, John Sandberg, and their rescue dog, Sandy Superstar. He said he loves to see the joy his wife brings to other people’s lives. “I know they’re lucky to get a painting from

Let it ride: City looking to expand Nova Community Skate Park Ormond Beach skaters might have more room to ride if a plan to double the size of the skate park passes the City Commission. Constrution could begin as soon as October. There’s a good chance the Nova Community Skate Park will be doubled in size this year — a 98% chance, to be exact. Shawn Finley, a civil engineer for the city of Ormond Beach, said the chances are very high for the skate park to not only double in size, but add different elements to suit all types of skaters, bikers and scooter-riders. “We want to provide the best attractions possible for what’s a large part of our community,” Finley said. “We’re going to add elements for speed skaters, street skaters and even younger, less experienced skaters. We want them to get involved.” Also a part of the $450,000 budget for this project, which is being funded by the city and an ECHO grant, is a skate pro shop. “We’re thinking something small for kids to check into,” Finley said. “We want it to have the elements of a pro shop and sell skate items and refreshments, but that depends on the vendor we choose.”
Tyjae Rivera, 15, gets some air on Aug. 7, at the Nova Community Skate Park. A.M. Weigel Construction will be working on the project; President Michael Weigel hopes to take it to the commission soon. “We want to take our final
fight plan to the commission within the next 30 days,” Weigel said. “Hopefully we can start construction in October.” Amanda Ponder, an Ormond Beach mother of two

skater boys, said a bigger park would be great for her family. “We come here at least once a month,” Ponder said. “It helps keep the boys out of trouble.”
After the City Commission voted to settle a dispute with Cheaters on Aug. 6, Commissioner James Stowers, who represents the area, recollected the meeting after the club opened in 2010. Citizens packed the commission chambers to complain about the adult business in the neighborhood. “It was a standing-room-only crowd,” he said. “I’ll never forget the gentleman (representing Cheaters) who came up and said they were going to do whatever they want to do.” Stowers said he wished that crowd was there for the settlement.“It was a long process,” he said. When the settlement came up for a motion, several commissioners started to speak.“I think we all want to make that motion and second it,” Mayor Ed Kelley said. The vote puts an end to a long legal battle. The city claimed it was sexually oriented business and violated city ordinances; the club maintained it was a bikini bar. The building is for sale, and new owners are expected bring change with them. “We are so pleased they are ending an adult-oriented business,” said Peggy Farmer, leader of the North U.S. 1 Coalition, a business group. “Whatever goes in there is OK, as long as it’s wholesome.” The building was painted pink, apparently to get the attention of customers, but it also got the attention of city officials and business leaders who thought the eye-catching color did not fit the image of Ormond Beach. “It certainly will improve the looks of U.S. 1 if we can remove the pink building,” said Commissioner Rick Boehm. The building was in the county when Cheaters started, and the property was later annexed into the city. Stowers said he sees positive things on the horizon for the area, and the Cheaters site has a strong potential for development because of visibility from U.S. 1. “It’s a huge thing for that corridor,” he said. Boehm praised City Attorney Randy Hayes and his staff for their work in the litigation. The settlement, which was initiated by the club, puts an end to the dancing by employees and contractors. It stops a lawsuit by the city and a countersuit by the club, owned by 1545 Ormond LLC and 1545 Operations Inc., Rhode Island companies. The case was set to go to trial in October. In other business, the city approved outdoor music for the Beach Bucket Bar and Grill, 867 S. Atlantic Ave. The Planning Board had recommended approval. MEMORIAL GARDENS PARK 78 East Granada Boulevard
Situated on approximately 2.5 acres at the southeast corner of Granada Boulevard between Seton Trail and Halifax Drive, Ormond Memorial Gardens are built on what was once a sand dune. The Gardens are natural ground that was gently developed into a park. Natural depressions were made into ponds, and you can climb the steps near the waterfall to the seemingly highest elevation in Ormond Beach. Parts of the Gardens are manicured landscape and other parts are left in a naturally wild state. Although the Gardens are located in the heart of the City, walking the paths gives you the feeling of being in a tropical rain forest. The Gardens contain five ponds that are home to numerous turtles, frogs and fish. Aquatic plants such as water lilies and water lettuces offer food, shade and natural cleansing within the ponds. Look for marginal bog plants such as papyrus, bananas, ginger lilies and wild flowers which flourish near the three ponds that were formed by natural depressions. Visitors can enjoy the solitude of a quiet bench or nook or walk the labyrinth inside the gazebo which is a popular site for weddings and memorial ceremonies.

Foley, who also worked for Hawaiian Tropic, said she used to have hundreds of models but is trying to scale down. “We have all different ethnicities we try to represent,” Foley said. “They have to have a certain look and be OK in front of the camera.” Foley herself has experience in the spotlight. She started modeling when she was 18, doing runway shows for large department stores in Ormond Beach. She eventually made it big and got to travel around the world. “People think this is a glamorous life,” Foley said. “It can be very stressful. The 7th Judicial Circuit is more in need of civil experts than criminal experts, so we feel it’s best for the circuit to go with Sands, an attorney who also has high ratings from Martindale Hubbell for ethics and ability.
Circuit Judge, 7th Judicial Circuit, Group 20: Kathy Weston
While we admire Adam Warren’s interest in serving as a judge, his experience is not as strong as that of Steven DeLaroche or Kathy Weston. DeLaroche’s tenure as a county judge ended in 2007 when he resigned for health reasons at the prospect of facing trial for alleged impropriety when dealing with traffic tickets of people he knew. But the real focus in this race should be on Kathy Weston. She’s board certified and has high ratings for ability and ethics. She is tireless in her community involvement. And she Kathy Weston has gained the support of several former judges in the area who know her well. Weston would be a great addition to the circuit and would make Ormond Beach proud.
Circuit Judge, 7th Judicial Circuit, Group 23: Thomas G. Portuallo
Although Kellie Jo Killebrew has han-
dled cases in many areas of the law, Thomas G. Portuallo’s experience on the bench makes him our choice. After 16 years of serving as a judge for workman’s compensation cases, Portuallo was appointed to the Group 23 seat in 2012. His experience in the past two years in this seat is Thomas Portuallo invaluable, and he performed well in the role. According to 13 attorneys who rated him in the 2014 Judicial Poll, conducted by the Volusia County Bar Association, he received an “excellent” or “satisfactory” rating of 90% in key categories such as knowledge of the law, impartiality, preparedness and demeanor.
County Judge, 7th Judicial Circuit, Group 18: Peter McGlashan
Whereas the circuit court judges handle felonies and other high-level cases, county judges handle what could be considered lower-level cases, including misdemeanors, traffic court, landlord-tenant disputes. Angela Dempsey’s experience is in dependency cases. On the other hand, Peter McGlashan is the incumbent, with many years of experience at the county court. That experience alone is enough to gain our support, but attorneys in the 2014 Judicial Poll Peter McGlashan referenced above have also rated him favorably. Of 20 attorneys who responded, 90% rated his knowledge and application of the law as “excellent” or “satisfactory”; 80% said he was impartial, 94% said he was diligent and prepared, and 85% gave high marks to his demeanor.
County Council, At Large: Joyce Cusack
Webster Barnaby didn’t respond to our request to participate in our Q&A, and so we will assume he doesn’t have time to address our readers. That makes it difficult to recommend him. Joyce Cusack is the at-large incumbent, seeking a second term. Pat Northey is the District 5 representative, but she has served two terms and so will have to vacate her seat on the council if she is not elected to the at-large seat.
Both Cusack and Northey have been in government for years and have served the county well. But Cusack’s eight years of experience at the state Joyce Cusack level give her an edge. In what is essentially a coin-toss between the two incumbents, we’ll stick with the at-large incumbent.
State Senator District 6, Republicans: John Thrasher
Derek Hankerson is a passionate public speaker, as was evidenced by his opening remarks at the Flagler Votes Forum in Palm Coast. But his strongest credentials so far are his involvement with national parks and having worked on other people’s campaigns. John Thrasher, on the other hand, has been an influential player in the state for 20 years. He has won the support of local John Thrasher Republicans for helping to fund local projects. Thrasher is also a voice for low taxes and balanced budgets.
Volusia School Board referendum for technology and security: Yes
With the state largely dictating school districts’ revenue, there are not many ways for a particular district to stand out. But we want the best for Ormond Beach’s kids, and we believe it’s worth investing in them. The school district has asked voters to extend an existing half-cent sales tax for an additional 15 years. The projected $480 million that will be collected in that time will be used to upgrade technology in all schools in Volusia County. It will also be used to build new schools (although not in Ormond Beach) and enhance security on school buses. A half-cent sales tax isn’t much. If you spend $100, it will cost you 50 cents. Moreover, as much as 40% of sales tax is paid by visitors, and they won’t even know the difference. So, don’t forget to turn to Page 2 on your ballot. There, you’ll find one question asking if you want to extend the half-cent sales tax. Make the right call for the kids, and for the rest of us. We recommend “Yes.”

SOCCER SIBLINGS By Joey LoMonaco | Sports Writer

Justin and Kayla Merkel pose for one of their senior pictures. Being seven hours apart will be “a big adjustment” for the twins, Kayla said.
Twin-ning combination: Merkels reach next level
Seabreeze alumni Justin and Kayla Merkel will kick off their respective college soccer careers this fall. Justin Merkel’s first soccer memory is backdropped by an Ormond Beach garage. He and his twin sister, Kayla, then age 8, each put on a fresh pair of soccer cleats their mother, Kim Merkel, had just purchased from “some goofy store” and started booting the ball across the pavement. “We had no idea what to do, but we did that for like an hour, and it was fun,” he said. “We played on the concrete, didn’t care, ruined the studs or whatever — but that’s what we did.” These days, the Merkels’ footie workouts contain decidedly more focus. The twins, who graduated from Seabreeze High School in May, are both playing college soccer this fall. Justin arrived Tuesday at Limestone College (South Carolina), while Kayla is staying closer to home to play for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The epiphanies came at different times. Kayla realized she could play college soccer when she made the Sandcrabs varsity squad as a freshman, becoming an immediate scoring threat. By her sophomore year, she helped Seabreeze to a district title. Justin, who played right-midfield for Seabreeze, took a little longer to realize his potential and desire to play at the next level. “Toward the end of my junior season, when I started getting two or three assists per game and leading the team to wins, I realized I didn’t want to stop playing soccer yet,” he said. “So, I kept training five days out of the week — for

hours. I gave it everything I had to get picked up by some team. I didn’t care where it was, I just wanted to play in college.” Nik Efremoski coached both siblings, Kayla at the Ormond Beach Soccer Club and Justin at Seabreeze. There are differences in the siblings’ skill sets; Justin is a heady midfielder who led Seabreeze in assists the last two seasons, while Kayla is a fleet-footed forward. The intangibles are where the most noticeable crossover occurs. “You can tell that they’re brother and sister, because their attitudes are both the same,” Efremoski said. “If you asked them to play goalkeeper for the team, they’d do it.” When the Merkels moved to Ormond from Pennsylvania when the twins were 8, soccer was just one of many
sports they tried out. Both participated in basketball, and Justin played baseball while Kayla played softball. Soccer is “just the one we both stuck with,” Kayla Merkel said. Soccer “pretty much runs our lives now,” Justin Merkel said. “It didn’t used to, but when Kayla and I started progressing and getting a lot better toward the end of high school, it just kind of took over everything. My mom got into it, and my dad watches games every night on TV. We breathe it.” It’s safe to say Kim Merkel knows where to find soccer performance footwear by now. She was an assistant coach for Seabreeze’s varsity girls team during Kayla’s time there and will take over as head coach this fall. Both of her kids will be forced to adapt as they begin their college ca-
reers, though. Limestone recruited Justin to play right back, a spot that won’t afford him many attacking opportunities. Liam McIlhatton coached Kayla with Ormond Beach’s 18U squad and will work with her again as an assistant coach for the Eagles. McIlhatton can’t remember her having a bad game but added she needs to be more vocal and catch up to players who’ve been playing at a higher level for longer. The enhanced speed and technical aspects of the college game aren’t the only changes. After 18 years spent attending one another’s games, sharing the same friends and seeing each other every day, they’ll have to deal with being apart. Seven hours and 475 miles apart. “We don’t really talk about it, because it’s just weird,” Kayla Merkel said. “I’ve seen him every single day of my life since we were born, and now he’s seven hours away. It’s very different from what we’re both used to, and it’s going to be a big adjustment.” To stay in shape this summer, twin brother and twin sister made an earlymorning habit of conditioning at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. Both had already received scripted workouts from their respective college coaches, so they’d alternate routines one-forone. They ran 120-yard sprints, 50s. Kim occasionally tagged along to time them. Just like with those first fledging passes in the garage, the future is uncertain. But, soccer’s what these twins do. And it’s fun.

Grace Community Church hosted a free petting zoo Aug. 9 with animals from Noah’s Landing. The church’s free Family Fun Day, held Aug. 9, was aimed to give kids one last hoorah before starting school Aug. 18. Senior Pastor Erik Dubasak said the theme for this event was inspired by his own family. “Last year, we did an outreach where we went with a bounce house to Rainbow Park,” Dubasak said. “But I’ve got two little girls of my own and so I thought, ‘What would be fun for them? They would love a petting zoo.’ So we just prayed for people to come, and it all came together.” Dubasak said he hoped the event would invite more people into their church, located right off West Granada Boulevard; the church is also con-

Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit accepted an award from TransLife for practices contributing to lifesaving organ donations.
+ Hospital recognized for organ donations Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center was recognized July 29 with top honors by TransLife for clinical performance practices contributing to lifesaving organ donations. TransLife, a federallydesignated organ procurement organization for 10 counties in east Central Florida, is responsible for the recovery, preservation and distribution of donated organs to critically ill patients. In 2013, four organs were provided for patients in need, and approximately 350 lives were improved through donated tissue from eight donors at the medical center. “It takes an entire collaborative effort to ensure that organ and tissue donation can take place, from hospital staff, TransLife and family members,” said Kristine Neal, spokeswoman for TransLife. The medical center maintained a 100% organ donation rate, meaning that successful donations were made for all eligible donors, according to Neal. The national goal is 75%, established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

ince retiring from Flagler Schools a little over a year ago, Stewart Maxcy has been focusing on his art. While painting has always been a form of relaxation and therapy for him — working a long day, and then painting late at night — in retirement, Maxcy has changed his outlook on painting from hobbyist to professional. Last month, he was one of six artists to join Ocean Books & Art, in Flagler Beach. The venture with the gallery is his first professional showing of his work. “I used to do strictly landscapes; growing up in Florida, I really liked the marshes and waterways,” Maxcy said while sitting on the porch in his Flagler Beach home. “When I went into Ocean Gallery, at the beach, they have people that are already doing that.” Stewart Maxcy But, on a whim, Maxcy brought a couple of sea turtle paintings along with him too. He had recently started painting the turtles. “It was turtle season, and I found it very strange that nobody was painting turtles,” Maxcy said. Gallery owner Frank Gromling loved the turtles and asked Maxcy to paint more. Now, his colorful acrylic paintings of sea turtles and manatees round out his display at the gallery.
As a young artist, Maxcy was a cartoonist and then worked with silkscreen, most of his work filled with a realistic, humorous flare. His paintings were the same way before he switched to landscapes. Now that he is painting ocean animals, he spends more time on details, shadowing and thinking about how light hits things through the water. His paintings have become much more realistic and truer to detail. “It’s an ongoing process,” he said. “I’m always learning new tricks — sometimes by accident. I would like to think that my artwork is improving with each painting.” Maxcy’s colorful sea life got some attention from Heather Chalmers and Marybeth Jeitner, who are in the process of writing a children’s book about Libbie the Lobster, a rare yellow lobster rescued from the lobster tank at the Flagler Beach Publix. “Not only is Stewart Maxcy a great artist and an illustrator, who has illustrated many children’s books, but he is also a kind, gentle man who loves his work,” wrote Jeitner on the Libbie the Rare Yellow Lobster Facebook page. Having worked in education for 37 years as an art teacher, elementary school principal, and district administrator, Maxcy was glad to sign on as the book’s illustrator. “My career in Flagler County was awesome,” Maxcy said, adding that it was fulfilling to touch so many lives in his work at the schools. “I’m hop-

I like my art to be relaxing and peaceful, so I’m hoping my paintings can do the same thing that I feel my career did.” But his career isn’t over. Maxcy is also spending his time giving private art lessons to children and will begin teaching acrylic painting classes as well as workshops at Ocean Books & Art. He will also be the featured artist at the gallery in October, with an opening reception Friday, Oct. 3. “When I was working, I was an underground artist,” Maxcy said. “And now, after a year of retirement, I feel like I am swapping careers.”
