Tall and trim at 91, John P. Boswell seems like he got out of the Marine Corps yesterday, with his salty language and confident manner. As I visited him to talk about the 70th anniversary of the surrender of Japan in 1945, he was reading an email from a buddy and fellow World War II veteran. He shared the photos from 70 years ago, showing sailors and Marines on

liberty on a little-known island in the western Pacific, enjoying dry land and sunshine. “On the island, most of them stripped and laid around,” he said. “A lot of sailors worked below decks. They were so white, many guys were burned,” he laughed. The island was Mogmog, part of the Caroline Islands, where the U.S. military was staging for a planned invasion of Japan. Kids go into business to help homeless families. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

The dining room table at the Waterman house was arrayed with colorful items Saturday morning. Containers of beads of every description and art paper in various designs were neatly spread out, ready for the day’s work. Sarah Waterman and Hannah Spellman, both 9, were about to begin making bookmarks, a business they started in early August. Business is good. They’ve made more than $400 (all donated to Family Renew Community) selling the decorative, unique items at $3 each. “It’s been quite crazy the last few weeks,” said Sarah’s mom, Jeannine. She and Hannah’s mom, Trui Peeters, posted it on their Facebook pages and they started getting orders right away. They’ve also taken them to their school, Pine Trail Elementary. Made with Love Bookmarks are made by threading beads on a string, and there’s a seemingly endless variety of beads, charms and other small items available to make a variety of designs. The string marks the place in the book, while the decorative objects hang outside the covers. Peeters said they hadn’t used

Some support individuality. Others would like to not have to think about what to wear. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Last month, the Volusia County School Board discussed the possibility of instituting a stricter dress code in schools, a code that would include uniforms for all ages. Due to a lack of students complying with the present dress code rules, officials discussed at their Aug. 11. meeting that more stringent rules are necessary. Though any new code would have to begin with a pilot program at one or more schools, students are already speaking out about the issues. The Ormond Beach Observer spoke with Seabreeze High School students, and though many felt it would limit their individuality, a few said they wouldn’t mind not thinking about what to wear in the morning. Seabreeze High School Principal Joe Rawlings said that as principal he would support whatever the School Board decided, and since he only began his position this school year, he could not comment about his students’ level of compliance with current codes. “Re-enforcement presents its own challenges,” he said. “But if you talk to kids about it, and you explain to them whats going on with the dress code, they will comply, by and large,” he said. “You have to be on top of it with your reasoning, and why you’re enforcing it. We explain to them that anywhere you go in the world, every place has a dress code to follow.” Rawlings said students have other ways of expressing themselves. “They can participate in club sand sports,”he said. “It doesn’t have to be on the clothes they wear.”

having as much fun as the daughters. She likes seeing her daughter make things, rather than spending a lot of time playing games on an iPad. “They are having a blast,” Waterman said. “We’ve been

helping them; we go to stores with them. It’s amazing to watch their creativity.” The project has introduced the girls to many new things, such as going to the post office to mail a package or cash a check. “All at the age of 9,” Waterman said. Sarah keeps a book that keeps track of orders, payment, etc., and they’ve also had to buy supplies and figure out packaging. “We bought out all the beads,

stickers and bags in the area,” Waterman said. Of all the tasks, Sarah says she enjoys making the bookmarks most, while Hannah likes going to the neighbors to sell. The idea started last summer when the girls decided they wanted to do a project to help a charity. Waterman said as a family they often donate things and teach the kids to help others. Both girls are big readers, and they ended up with the bookmark idea. “They took the idea and ran with it,” Waterman said. She said they decided to help homeless people and found Family Renew while searching the Internet. The organization helps homeless families get on their feet. Peeters said they like the fact that the money stays locally. She said they will go in person to donate the money so the girls will see where it’s going. The girls have started to get requests, such as a dragon fly or other animal or team colors. Peeters said many people want to encourage them and some are buying them for stocking stuffers. She said her daughter never was interested in math, but counting the money is “no problem.” Visit the Made with Love Bookmarks on Facebook. Bead or monetary donations are welcome. Bob Doran was on the beach on Iwo Jima when he saw the flag raised on Mount Suribachi. “We were so excited to see it,” he said. “All the ships were blowing their horns. But the fighting went on for another month.” Doran, who was commissioned on the beach at Iwo Jima as second lieutenant, meets for lunch each week with other veterans, including Boswell. While Iwo Jima was a tough fight, Okinawa also took a lot of sacrifice to capture. Many destroyers, which protected the carriers, were sunk off the island. Dave Carter, another regular lunch member, was on a destroyer attacked by kamikaze, but he didn’t see them coming because

The war stories sometimes come out, but they are usually not the topic of conversation at the weekly lunches. Along with a lot of laughter and good-natured kidding, they talk about everything from politics to sports to computers. “You’ll get some strong opinions at this table,” said Carter, 89, who served in the Navy. Stories of Corregidor, Battle of the Bulge, Okinawa and many other places are still being told by people who were there. These words will someday only appear in the history books. “There aren’t many of us left,” Doran said.

of naval operations for the Pacific area. His duty took him to the deck of the USS Missouri where he witnessed Japanese dignitaries sign the Instrument of Surrender on Sept. 2, 1945. Famous photos of the ceremony show the ship deck packed with men in uniform. “They were correspondents from all over the world,” Boswell said. “MacArthur invited them. Not that he shouldn’t have.” Gen. Douglas MacArthur had recently been named Supreme Commander for the Allied Power, and he is the one shown most often in historical photos. But other officers also signed the papers, including Nimitz, who Boswell believes should receive more credit for the victory. “Nimitz was in charge of the Navy,” he said. “The Pacific area was a Navy operation, you know.” He said the press was looking for MacArthur, who sought publicity. Nimitz, on the other hand was quiet and laid back. “But he was a superb human being,” Boswell said. “He was a stoic person. He was unheralded because he wasn’t colorful.” The orderlies for Nimitz, including Boswell, were with him 24 hours a day. Boswell remembers while on Guam, Nimitz would go for a walk in the morning. While the Marine order-

lies wore starched khaki, Nimitz would often wear shorts, and he would joke with Marines. “We’d be soaked, and he would say, ‘Is it hot enough for you?’” Boswell said.

DESTRUCTION PRECEDED THE ATOMIC BOMBS

History tells the role atomic bombs had in the surrender, but Boswell says people don’t realize the damage done by the firebombing campaign. He flew over Tokyo and saw a major world city leveled by fire. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in the firebombing. “Lemay said we don’t need an atomic bomb,” he said, referring to Gen. Curtis Lemay, who was in charge of the Strategic Air Command. Boswell, who grew up in Massachusetts, joined the Marines after Pearl Harbor, and said the Marines were a small operation at the time, nothing like the fighting force they would become. “At Parris Island, we slept in tents,” he said. “But the Corps grew up to be hell.” Asked what he remembers the most about the surrender on the USS Missouri, he said it was how the Japanese officials were treated with dignity and respect by the American military commanders. Even Gen. Jonathan Wain-

wright, who had been a prisoner of war for four years after being captured in the Philippines in the fall of Corregidor, didn’t “lord it over” the Japanese, Boswell said. He remembers how skinny Wainwright was after his years of captivity. “He must have weighed about 120 pounds,” he said. Boswell credits the growth of America after the war to the GI Bill. “The returning military were able to go to college,” he said. “The way the country grew after the war, it never would have happened without the GI bill.” Born and raised in Massachusetts, Boswell retired to Ormond Beach in the late 1970s. He had vacationed at Ellinor Village in the 1950s and decided he wanted to retire here. “Ormond Beach was a nice little town in the 1970s,” he said. “Now they are bringing industry and business. We moved down here to get away from all that. “ The interview ended because Boswell was picking up a fellow veteran, who lives in a nursing home, for lunch. “You have to get them out every now and then,” he said, striding across his lawn to his car.

Blake Lewis says he asks God to lead him in the right direction when we sets out on his daily walks. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

For the past six years, Ormond Beach resident Blake Lewis has walked down his street with a cross on his back and no clear plan of where he was headed. This past Saturday, his walk led him down West Granada Boulevard and to a young man whose mother had just died and who was in need of some kind words. Lewis said it’s always God who leads him in the right direction. “When I get to the end of my street, I ask God, ‘Which way should I go?’” Lewis said. “Today, God put me in front of a grieving man, and I prayed with him. I told him about how his mother was happy now. It was beautiful.” Typically, Lewis walks about five or six miles spreading the word of Jesus. He call his practice the “I Am Blessed Ministry,” which means anytime anyone asks him how he’s doing, his only response is “I am blessed.” The ministry is based on Bible scripture, Proverb 3:5, which says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and not lean on your own understanding; in all you do acknowledge him, and he will direct your path. ” Though he usually only walks on the weekends, he lost his job

Why must I fight with a price tag?!? Will I ever live in a world where Ross puts the price tag sticker on the back of the mirror?

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

It was 1 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon when I finally found time to hang the bronzed, vertical mirror I recently purchased at our local Ross. After ripping through the strategically placed cardboard corner protectors, I knew I was faced with nearly impossible task: peeling the price sticker from the glass. The numbers “14.99” taunted me as I naively attempted to remove it simply with my nails, which barely took off the edges of the sticker. My next tools were a little more advanced. Water, a rough old cloth, and all the strength I could muster scratched and peeled and scraped until there were just two small white

spots left. Though they were little, those spots held their own through glass, counter and event toilet cleaner. I scrubbed and scrubbed until I left my fingers turning red. Fearing the glass might break in my honest attempt to clean it, I took a break to write this column in hope that someone with an “in” at Ross will see it. Please, please, please put the price tag sticker on the back, bottom, or wherever it is least likely to be seen by most of mankind. If you are worried that we shoppers might be too used to the luxury of having the price right in front of our eyeballs, and go into some sort of panic-induced riot because we can no longer find it, fear not. I believe we are all capable of simply turning a gold frame around, or lifting up a purple owl statue to find that the price is exactly where it should be. After resting my tired hands for a few minutes, I was able to fight through the final spots of my $14.99 nemesis. My fingers

may be sore, and there may be a scratch in my mirror where I attempted to use a knife, but

Discovery: ‘A gift for our children’ Environmental Discovery Center to be a reality. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

The newly named Environmental Discovery Center had its groundbreaking Aug. 28 after years of research and planning. “It will be more than a building; it will be a gift to our children,” said local naturalist Chuck Tague. He quoted environmentalist Rachel Carson, who said, “If I could give a gift to each child, it would be a sense of wonder.” He said the discovery center might even ignite “whatever spark remains in our adult hearts.” Planning is still being done for the center, located at 601 Division Ave., which will have interactive exhibits, classes and a variety of programs to teach visitors about the local environment. Formerly called the Environmental Learning Center, the name change was approved by the City Commission at their Aug. 18 meeting. At the meeting, City Commissioner Bill Partington said he

received strong recommendations from the staff and volunteers for the name change. He said some were turned off by the word, “learning.” Mayor Ed Kelley was hesitant to approve, saying he thought the purpose of the center was learning, but the name change got the OK from the commissioners. The Marine Discovery Center in Ponce Inlet was an influence on the design and planning for the Ormond Beach center, and its manager, Michael Brothers, has provided advice. At the groundbreaking, Brothers said his center in Ponce Inlet has reached a level no one expected: 97,000 visitors in the past year. “People want connection with the natural world,” he said. Leisure Services Director Robert Carolin said a group of citizenvolunteers have been working on plans. Many are retired, and have backgrounds in teaching or science. He said they’ve developed programs that will meet course

BEAR APPRECIATION DAY This past week, we mothers and fathers of sweet, loving, hairy buckets of drool celebrated National Dog Day. Though I didn’t throw him a party or shower him with gifts (because remember, he is a dog), I did spend the day reminiscing on all the things I love about Bear. 1) We like all the same foods. Though I’m not 100% sure how much he’s actually tasting the food as he’s huffing it down like a vacuum cleaner, Bear has never been a picky eater. Pepperoni pizza, leftover Chipotle, bacon and lettuce (no joke) are some of his favorites. 2) He sleeps like a hungover frat boy. Every morning, when I look over the edge of my bed to wake the beast, I find him sprawled out on his back, with legs in the air, and his tongue hanging out of the side of his mouth. It’s a precious image.

MAKING MATTERS WORSE 7:37 a.m. — 1500 Block of West Granada Boulevard. Tampering with Evidence. A suspect was being transported to jail on a marijuana charge when he slipped his hand restraints to the point that his arms were in front of him. The officer heard him moving excessively and looked back to see what he was doing. The suspect had removed a small, round, utility cover from the rear of the seat. He was sticking something down the hole and then trying to replace the cover. Asked what he was doing, the suspect said he was just playing with the cover. The officer pulled over and called for backup so he could put the suspect’s hand restraints back behind him. The officer told the suspect he was going to remove the seat to see what he placed there, and the suspect said, “Oh, it’s gone now.” The officer peered down the hole in the seat, and with use of a flashlight, was able to see a plastic bag and a marijuana cigarette. While the suspect was taken back to police headquarters, the officer drove the car to the maintenance department and technicians were able to remove the marijuana. The amount of marijuana was not enough to increase the original charge. The officer told the suspect that if he had given up the marijuana, his charge would have been the same, but now he was going to also be charged with tampering with evidence.

DON’T LEAVE YOUR TAN BEHIND 1:08 p.m. — 100 Block of Interchange Boulevard. Civil Complaint. The officer was called to a hotel on a civil issue. The desk clerk said they had a guest stay overnight who used spray-on tan and got some on furniture in the room. The officer observed a spot of tan spray on the carpet next to a window. There was also tan spray on several bed sheets. Advised it was a civil matter, the hotel left a message for the occupant, who had checked out.

DIFFERENCE OF OPINION 3:29 p.m. — 1500 Block of West Granada Boulevard. Assist Another Agency. The officer was patrolling the department store when a woman ran up to him and said she and her husband own a gun shop. A week ago, she said, an older man stole a $600 scope from them. She said she had just seen him in the store and her husband was following him. When the suspect came out of the store, the officer told the couple to stay away while he made contact. The officer told the suspect he looked like someone who took a scope from a shop in Holly Hill. The suspect said he bought a scope there recently, but maybe he should take it back if they think he stole it. The officer told him to contact Holly Hill police and speak with them about it. He sent a message to Holly Hill police to advise of the situation.

SPORTS County’s best wide receiver?

Coach Samantha Bohon introduced Emmy Herrick as the newest member of the Embry-Riddle soccer team, along with her mother, Katie.

lthough Emmy Herrick had played little soccer until a few weeks ago, EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University held a press conference to officially sign the 7-yearold second-grader with special needs at Osceola Elementary to the women’s soccer team Tuesday, Sept. 1, at ERAU. “We recruit players from all over the world; we have seven different countries, so for Emmy to be a part of our program is very special,” said Samantha Bohon, ERAU women’s soccer coach and Ormond Beach native. “The thing that we love about her is that she’s super fast; we saw it at our team dinner.” ERAU collaborated with Team IMPACT (see below) to become Emmy’s support team, and, since then, she has participated in various events, including practice warmups, team dinners and the

WHAT IS TEAM IMPACT? Team IMPACT improves the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. The program matches kids with local college teams. Those children become an official member of the team from draft day through graduation. The child joins the athletic team, and the student athletes join the child’s support team.

scrimmage game, where she got to sit on the bench with the other girls. “Watching her the first day with them was very emotional for me,” said Katie Herrick, Emmy’s mom. “Embry-Riddle has been amazing. They’re an amazing team. Coach Sam has been wonderful. The girls took Emmy under their wing the first day, and she’s been very comfortable with them, which is a wonderful thing. It’s amazing to watch her interact and learn some new skills.” At the press conference, Bohon presented Emmy with a team jersey, and she even had her sign her letter of intent. Afterward, Emmy answered questions from the media and others in attendance. “Being on the team is awesome,” she exclaimed. “It makes me even bouncier,” she added, taking a short break from her constant running around with her twin, Madison, and older sister, McKenzie. As normal as she appears, Emmy has a neurogenic bowel dysfunction and autism spectrum disorder. According to her mother, she has good days, but there are also bad ones. “Having the soccer team here brings her up,” Katie Herrick said. “Even if she’s had a bad day, the soccer team can make a bad day better, which is a wonderful thing. And, when we’re at home, the kids help keep her stay grounded. When she has problems, Kenzie can reel her back in and calm her down sometimes when I can’t. They’ve been living with it for seven years, so they kind of get her.”

Before meeting her, the team was warned that Emmy struggled with social anxiety, but she has shown only the opposite around them. “I met her for the first time today, and, when we were introduced, she just came and wrapped her arms around me,” said John Phillips, the director of athletics. “Today was a great day for us at Embry-Riddle and for Emmy. One of the things we try to do is impact the community, not just the students on campus. We like to get out into the community to support good people and good projects, and this is a great project. Emmy is a great little girl, and we’re happy to be a part of her team and to have her on ours.” “She’s become a really big hugger, since she met the soccer team,” said Katie Herrick, after watching Emmy go around the room hugging everyone she encountered. “They’ve brought her out of her shell.” One of Emmy’s teammates in particular who has meant the most to her, is Emmie Johansson, her favorite player because they share the same name. “I got an email back in the summerthat we were going to get a girl named Emmie, which was kind of funny for me because my name is not the most common,” Johansson said. “It’s been a really good experience, and I definitely feel blessed to help and make her everyday life easier. She comes to us and really loves to be here, and we as a team enjoy being an impact to her as well. I have a little sister that’s about her age, back at home in Sweden, and I miss her a lot, so Emmy and I have had a connection since the beginning.” The Eagles will be hosting “Emmy’s Night,” a night to cele-

brate their newest team member, at the first home game, against Stetson, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at ERAU. There, they will give away prizes and will have other activities for the fans. “We prioritize getting into the community,” Bohon said. “We did over 450 community service hours last year, and this was a unique opportunity to actually have a longstanding relationship, so it wouldn’t be a one- or twotime experience, and Emmy and her family have been a great fit for us. She’s going to get a real, behind-the-scenes feel of being a part of this group. She will be at our home games, practices and will travel with us on some of the away games. It’s really neat.” Email Jeff Dawsey at jeff@ ormondbeachobserver.com.

e was Mainland’s fourth option at receiver last year. Getting most of his playing time in the Buccaneers’ blowout wins, Randy Baker waited patiently behind Kaylo Hannah, Wilfred Taylor and Will Collins to display his skills. Now that those guys have graduated, it’s his turn. “Last season I was good, but I just had some great talent in front of me,” Baker said. “This year, I knew I had to step up and be that guy and lead the receivers, so I worked extra hard during the summer on the little things like routes, getting off jams and communicating better with Denzel (Houston) on the field. During 7-on-7s, I made sure my hands were legit because I knew it was going to prepare me for the season.” With one game down, Baker’s work has already reaped fruit. He caught 31- and 20-yard touchdown receptions, matching his total from last season, and ended the night with five catches for 82 yards. But, Baker wasn’t surprised, nor is he satisfied. He knows big things are expected from him this year. As the leader of a new receiver corps and the first receiver to battle Mainland’s highly confident defenders in one-on-one practice drills, his first responsibility is to motivate and inform the others that they should be just as certain in their abilities as the guys lining up on the other side of the line of scrimmage in front of them. “It’s fun because I’ve gotten so much better, seeing them try to catch me,” Baker said, “but they also make me work. With Cyrus (Fagan) being the top safety in the country, he’s usually my main target because I know we’re going to go at it.” “It seems like his speed came out of nowhere,” said Ronnie Stokes, one of Mainland’s starting quarterbacks. Just 206 yards shy of his total from last year (288), Baker believes he is the top receiver in the county, and he will play an intricate part in Mainland’s quest for a ring. I agree with him, and I believe he will quadruple his lastseason totals, depending on how often the starters play in games.

Lady Bucs humbled by winless Matanzas Mainland’s failure to close out Matanzas proved to be a detriment in the long run. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

After winning each preseason match and the first two games of the season without dropping any sets, the Lady Bucs surrendered two sets and ultimately a third to the Matanzas Lady Pirates to fall for the first time this season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Matanzas. “We didn’t play our best tonight, but there’s room for

improvement,” coach Sandy Garner said. “I thought Matanzas played really well. They outhit us, served well; they did a good job.” Mainland took the first set 25-16, but the Lady Pirates won the next 25-17. Mainland fired back to edge out Matanzas 25-21 in the third, and, when it seemed as if they were going to finish the match, forcing deuce, the Pirates won consecutive points to take the fourth set 27-25 and force a final set. In the final set, the Lady Pirates

never trailed, using an early 4-0 run to create space that the Lady Bucs could never reel in. Matanzas won the final set 15-12. “We hit the ball right into the blocks,” Garner added. “We have to work on some shots around the blocks instead of just patty-caking it over. Our strength is that we can hit the ball hard; we just have to.” The Lady Bucs will look to rebound against Pine Ridge Thursday, Sept. 3, at Mainland.

The Lady Bucs celebrate together after winning the third set.

really no surprise. “In Italian, it means something you do with love for someone else,” Olson said. “It’s just what you do.”

Donna Olson glides between tables and chairs, quickly pouring champagne into half-empty glasses, and chit-chatting with her Saturday morning guests. It’s a little unusual for her to have a full house right now. Family issues have forced her to rebrand her cafe, Mia dona Market, as a catering and special eventsfocused business. Thankfully, that’s right up Little Blog Dress Media owner Darlynn Tacinelli’s alley, who hosted a Chari-TEA event there Saturday. Put together by Tacinelli’s own organization, the High Heel Coalition, the luncheon sold out its first seating in 23 hours. “I had to beg Donna to let me do a second seating,” Tacinelli laughed as she spoke to her guests. “But I’m so happy she did.” This quarter, the event raised money for the TEARS Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting families after the loss of a baby. Cathy Hartman said the donation will go to helping families who can’t afford to pay for cremation or burial services for their children.
