YOUR TOWN LYLA’S CRUISE

Thanks to the efforts and donations from Oasis Church, 5-year-old Lyla Bear was able to celebrate being cancer-free by going on a Disney cruise with her family. Oasis raised over $6,000 and enough money to pay for a cruise for the entire Bear family — Lyla, Amalie, 10, Riane, 7, Amanda and Jeremiah. They were able to go for a week in between Lyla Bear’s chemo sessions.

Kristin Heron and the Sound of Water Kristin Heron’s ‘The Sound of Water’ will be on display at The Hub until Sept. 26. COMMUNITY EDITOR

Emily Blackwood

Ormond Beach artist Kristin Heron had her first solo show Sept. 3.

When people think of Florida, they might conjure up images of crowded beaches, intense humidity and theme park lines — but Ormond Beach artist Kristin Heron sees things a little differently. A horse carrying a sea shell on its back and stopping for a drink in a small pool of water. An innocent looking alligator curled up with a tiny red heart by its side. A bunny hopping over an underwater beehive while the moon changes phases right above its head. Those characters and their stories are just a few snippets of Heron’s imagination that are on display for her first solo show, “The Sound of Water.” Held at The Hub on Canal, 132 Canal St., New Smyrna Beach, the show runs through Sept. 26, and, according to her artist statement, features a collection of Heron’s work that is “an allegory for the transformation of sorrow into grace; illustrating truth and healing through the use of gentle imagery.” “The depths, rhythms, reflections and transformative qualities of water fascinate me, symbolizing life source and change, in my artwork,” the statement reads. “By dropping and pouring water into wet paint on canvas, I create fluid background forms and spontaneous textures that

set the stage and narrative. I then sketch, paint and collage images onto these dreamy landscapes. My hope is to enchant the viewer with an approachable and sincere style of painting, breathing magic into everyday experience.” Heron returned to her hometown of Ormond Beach after earning a bachelor of arts degree in Studio Art and Music from Rollins College. She currently works as the education and outreach curator for the Ormond Memorial Art Museum, and draws a lot of her inspiration from the scenery that surrounds her historic Ormond Beach Treehouse. All of her pieces are full of symbolism, and during her artist talk at the “Sound of Water,” opening Sept. 3, she explained some of the meaning behind her paintings, like the horse drinking from a pool in “The Journey.” “Horses represent strength,” Heron said. “They’re wild and free. She’s been on this long journey, and she’s finally arrived at this pool. The painting could actually ask the question, ‘What are we thirsty for?’ and ‘What are we seeking on this journey?’ It’s something different for each of us, and maybe she’s telling us to go after it with strength.” Visit kristinherondesigns.com for more information about the artist.

BRIEFS More rain brings more need to tip and toss Volusia County’s mosquito control wants residents to be aware that more rain means more water that can turn into standing water and breeding grounds for mosquitoes. “The two mosquitoes that transmit dengue, chikungunya and Zika, are only produced in containers such as buckets, tires, kiddie pools and gutters,” said James McNelly, Volusia County’s mosquito control director. This is different from the other mosquitoes in Volusia County, such as the ones typically found in the salt marsh areas. The most important preventive steps residents can take include tipping containers more often (at least weekly) to remove standing water, tossing containers not in use, and wearing mosquito repellent to avoid mosquito bites. For more information about mosquito prevention and protection, visit volusia.org/mosquito.

loria Max keeps every thank you note she’s ever gotten. Written on purple paper, the insides of cards or carefully folded letters, each message speaks to the gratitude and appreciation people have for Max and the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties for helping them in their time of need. And some people even pay it forward. “After the disaster in the Phillipines, we donated $1,000 each to 10 different people,” she said. “Two of them wrote me, and said they pooled their money together and used it to buy food for their entire village.” Stories like that are the exact reason why Max and the federation go the extra mile to find real individuals affected by disasters to donate to. She said it takes some detective work — she usually calls churches and synogogues to get the names — but it’s worth it to feel like they’ve made a real difference in someone’s life. “If I send a check to an organization, our little bit of money gets lost in the shuffle,” Max said. “And the people don’t get it until much later. It takes time, and it would be easier just to send a check to a larger organization, but this way they get the money first, and they can buy the essientials. And you feel a connection when you do it for one family.”

Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties Executive Director Gloria Max said she does it to make a direct difference.

The letter below reads: “I wanted to express my amazement and thanks for all the help you gave my husband and I yesterday. Ian is suffering with leukemia, lymphoma and skin cancer. We had under $2 between us and an empty pantry. You saved our lives.”

Currently, the federation is raising money for individuals impacted by the flooding in Louisiana. So far they’ve raised close to $8,500, with $2,500 donated from the federation. “No one is talking about it, and these people really need help,” she said. “One hundred percent of the money we raise will go to them.” Anyone interested in donating can deliver or send a check to the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties, 470 Andalusia Ave., Ormond Beach, FL, 32174. Write “Louisana flood,” in the memo section.

Photographer, filmmaker and longtime Daytona State College professor Eric Breitenbach will launch a Kickstarter campaign in September to raise money for a documentary film on the American naturalist William Bartram. Breitenbach is producing the film, “Cultivating the Wild: William Bartram’s Travels,” with University of Georgia professor Dorinda Dallmeyer, one of the South’s leading experts on William Bartram. The film has been in production for over a year. “I’d much rather be out with a camera, said Breitenbach, “but the reality is that documentary films are getting harder and harder to fund, and frequently independent filmmakers have to take matters into their own hands. Kickstarter has worked tremendously well for a lot of people. They evaluate all of their sponsored projects. You have to have done some serious work in order to qualify.” The producers’ goal is to raise $30,000, which will fund the remaining location production, including expensive aerial and underwater videography. The producers also want to animate certain passages from Bartram’s book, and each animation can cost several thousand dollars. The campaign runs from Sept. 7 to Oct. 7, and can be found by going to cultivatingthewild.com For more information on the film, contact Eric Breitenbach at 506- 3542.

Beach Patrol estimates 600 jellyfish stings in August in Volusia There have been an estimate of 600 jellyfish stings in Volusia County during August, according to Senior Captain Tamra Marris of the Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue. Though beach safety hasn’t had any reported stings recently, they still urge swimmers to be cautious of jellyfish. She said a purple flag flown by the lifeguard, which indicates dangerous marine life, usually means jellyfish are in the water.

Citizens provide input for the city’s economic future A new strategy for growth is being developed. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Thirty-three citizens attended a workshop Aug. 27 to help the city update its Strategic Economic Development Plan, a process which happens every three years. The plan is focused on retaining and expanding existing businesses; recruiting jobs and capital investment; and redeveloping the downtown area. One resident, Jonathan Bowers, said he came to the workshop because he is interested in the economic plans in the areas and wants to be part of the community. As the owner of a business, Clean Environmental Solutions LLC, he likes seeing the development in the city and surrounding areas. “This will be a great place to own property in the next few years,” he said. Bob Gray, of Strategic Planning Group, Jacksonville, started the workshop by giving an overview of local economics. He explained that the public sector does not create business, it only creates a framework that encourages and helps businesses. POPULATION PICTURE

BUSINESS GROWTH

Using a Growth Assistance Program, which is incentive based, the city has been successful in helping several local companies expand or relocate in recent years. They are ECN, S.R. Perrott, Valient Equipment, Ameritech Die and Mold, Edgewell, Concentrated Aloe and Germ Free Labs. The city successfully recruited Duva Sawko, Prime Global Group, SKYO Industries and Super Petrel. For the employment picture, Gray told the audience that there are 2,567 people who live and work in Ormond Beach. There are 13,376 Ormond Beach residents who leave the city to work, and there are 11,118 people who work in Ormond Beach but do not live in the city.

ROCKEFELLER ADVANTAGE

Gray noted that The Casements is an important facility, and the city should promote the fact that the richest man in the world, John D. Rockefeller, chose the city to live in. One of the results of the workshop was a strategy to look into having a “historic district” designation with identifying signs. Gray also said there is a perceived parking problem, but it’s because people don’t know of available parking. Workshop members agreed steps should be taken to educate the public. AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION

Dwight Selby, a local businessman who is running for the City Commission, said the city should

take steps to retain the “millennial generation.” They often leave the area for work, he said. Longtime area Realtor Marvin Miller said State Road A1A on the west side looks like a “ghost area” and needs to be revitalized. The attendees then broke into groups to come with their suggestions for the plan. A sample of components in the updated plan includes expediting the permitting process, assisting businesses with hiring programs, developing the Municipal Airport, promoting visitation downtown, encouraging retail development and identifying sites for development. The next step will be for the updated economic plan to be approved by the City Commission. It will be available on ormondbeach.org.

214125

Gray said the future of growth for the city is Ormond Crossings, which is awaiting development.

Gray said it was slowed by the recession, but still holds promise. In addition to a business park, it has a residential area which has a potential for 3,000 residential units, which could add 7,500 residents, figuring 2.5 residents per house. The population growth of Ormond Beach was 4.9% over the past five years, compared to Flagler County, which was 5.9%. Port Orange had a 4.7% increase in population and New Smyrna Beach had an 8.1% increase. Studies show, Gray said, that retail growth has opportunity in Ormond Beach in four areas, gas stations with convenience store, grocery stores, lawn and garden and building supply.

The Observer got a major upgrade

COMMUNITY EDITOR

I’ve never been much of an office person. Being confined inside four walls from 9 to 5 with no more than a mere half hour for lunch is my nightmare. I’ve worked a few of those kinds of jobs, and let’s just say I took a lot of bathroom breaks just to get a change in scenery. That’s why the Ormond Beach Observer and I were such a perfect fit. My job requires me to be in the community and not stuck at my desk checking Faceboook every five minutes. Because of this, for the past two years I’ve worked here I’m hardly ever in the office. And while most people get it, it has caused a few problems. One time I pranked our Advertising Account Manager Josh McPherson by rearranging a bunch of stuff on his desk. He got me back the next day by covering my entire desk and chair with newspaper. Only, I didn’t see it until about a week

and a half later, and he thought I was really mad at him. But times have changed, and thanks to a major change in scenery — and the fact that I’m now in walking distance to all my favorite resturants — I’m in the office like, all the time. The Ormond Beach Observer moved! We’re now on the second floor of First Green Bank, 175 W. Granada Blvd., in what is arguably the coolest office in Ormond Beach. Rather than have a bunch of closed off offices that literally no one ever used, we opted for one big, open space with just a conference room for privacy. (Although it’s currently not very private because it doesn’t have doors yet.) Instead of individual desks, we all share two huge, beautiful tables so we can exchange ideas and funny cat videos while we’re working. We’ve been in the new space for a few weeks now, and not everything is finished. We’re still waiting on some more chairs, lockers to keep our stuff in and bean bags that I’m hoping to buy and add to the office without anyone noticing. One of the harder struggles I’ve faced during my career is finding the right atmosphere to work and write in, and thanks to this move from our big boss, John Walsh (yes I’m totally brown-nosing — hush), I’ve finally found it. So come check out our new digs — and prepare to feel slightly jealous — at our first

WATCH THOSE PURSES 2:47 a.m. — First Block of West Granada Boulevard Theft. The victim was having a drink at a bar with a friend. The suspect, a female about 30 years old, asked if she could stand next to them while she ordered a drink. About an hour later, the victim left the bar and realized her wallet was missing. Surveillance video showed the suspect look around to see if anyone was watching. She then reached into the victim’s purse, which was hanging on the back of her chair, and rummaged around for about 20 seconds. The suspect then walked to the exit and out into the parking lot. The victim did not have cash in the wallet but had credit cards.

CLERK NOT ALARMED 8:38 p.m. — 1200 Block of West Granada Boulevard Shoplifting. The suspect, about 30 years old and with a thin build, entered the store at closing time and started asking questions about wireless charging pads. As the victim was looking for the accessories, the alarm on the cell phone by the suspect went off as he handled it. The victim retrieved the keys to the alarm and shut it off. The victim then went to the back of the store to look for the accessories again. The suspect walked around the store for a bit, then abruptly said, “Never mind,” and left. The victim then discovered the phone missing that had set off the alarm. The surveillance video showed the suspect putting it in his pocket.

SCRATCH THAT EXCUSE 4 p.m. — First Block of South Atlantic Avenue Criminal Mischief. The victim said her truck had scratches on it and it must have happened while she was at work. The suspect was seen on surveillance video scratching a different car in the same parking garage. When being interviewed, he was told that two other cars were scratched in the garage on days he worked. The suspect said that he was around the latest victim’s car because it was “funny looking.” The officer then told the suspect that he didn’t say that car was scratched and the suspect did not have an answer. All of the damaged cars belonged to managers of the business where the suspect worked. The suspect was charged with criminal mischief and damage to property.

SCREEN NOT A DETERRENT 7:18 a.m. — First Block of Big Buck Trail Burglary. When the victim went out in the morning to walk his dog, he saw that his garage door was open. He lowered the garage screen door and saw that it had been cut open. He said he had left the garage door open but the garage screen closed over night. He checked his house and saw that his television was missing. A neighbor said they saw a big box truck parked on the street nearby about 11:30 p.m.

SPORTS AN EYE FOR THE BALL

Although Dylan Cary could only see with his right eye for the last several games of the past season, he was able to intercept a ball against Deltona. After locating the ball in the air, he dove for it, and, once it hit one of his hands, he was able to reel it in.

rom the time Dylan Cary ever graced a football field, he wore the red and bore the name “Sandcrab.” From rising up the Pop Warner ranks to now playing for the Seabreeze Sandcrabs, Cary shoulders that identity with dignity, even during losing seasons. Take last year, for example, when he played the final three games with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis — a brief but intense attack of inflammation in the brain and spinal cord and occasionally the optic nerves that damages the brain’s myelin — similar to multiple sclerosis. “I woke up one morning and had no idea what was going,” Cary said. “I really noticed it when I was at practice and tried to catch a ball above my head, but it hit me in my stomach. I was seeing double and everything was blurry.” Cary had suffered vision loss in his eye but still decided to play. “It was really hard playing with one eye,” Cary said, “and it made me realize how lucky I am to be able to see.” One might ask why he chose to continue to play in that condition, especially since the Sandcrabs were 1-7 with a slim chance of reaching the playoffs. For Cary, the answer is simple: He takes

pride in playing Sandcrab football. “I’ve always been a Sandcrab, from Pop Warner to now, so it’s different for me,” he said. “And my dad and both of my sisters graduated from Seabreeze, and I’ve grown up going to Municipal Stadium.” Enduring these last two years have not been easy on him. Cary has seen many of his best teammates who are his friends transfer to greener pastures. “It’s been hard to go through,” Cary said. “It sucks, because we were like a unit and worked well together, but I understood and we’re all still close friends.” Cary plans to watch some of them play this weekend during his bye week. And finishing last season with a 2-8 record was the hardest for him, because he wanted more for the seniors. “We’ve only tried to get this program back to the tradition it has had in the past,” he said, “trying to get back to the playoffs where we belong.” Whether he and the Sandcrabs are able to turn this season around or not, Cary says he will enjoy the rest of his time donning the Sandcrab red, because he will get to “play with my family one more time, under the lights and for my school.”

Cary brings down the ball carrier during the Sandcrabs’ game against DeLand.

SANDCRABS FALL TO DELAND

The Seabreeze Sandcrabs lost to the DeLand Bulldogs 10-7 on Friday, Sept. 2, at Daytona Municipal Stadium. After going down early 10-0 in the first quarter, the Sandcrabs’ defense held the Bulldogs scoreless for the rest of the game. With five minutes gone in the fourth quarter, Brevin Glaze turned the contest into a nail biter, when he connected with Breonn Stauffer-McCormick for a 38-yard touchdown pass. Noah Motto kicked the extra point to pull the Sandcrabs within three points. Isaac Mott intercepted a pass late in the game to put Seabreeze in field goal range for a potential tie, but Motto’s kick was short and to the left.

first became a sports fan in 1992, upon hearing the name “Jerry Rice.” I simply liked him because my cousin’s and his father’s names were Jerry. It was coincidental that he was the best wide receiver in NFL and would become arguably the best player ever. Unfortunately, as I rooted for the San Francisco 49ers, it seemed that they could never reach the Super Bowl when I was watching. I thought about this while observing the Seabreeze student section. A fan’s loyalty is only tested during a tough run. It is no fault to Mainland fans that they get to cheer on a top-ranked team that literally wins 9-out-of-10 times (they’re 38-4 over the last three years), but loyalty can’t be measured with them. In contrast, Seabreeze has become the perfect tester of loyalty. In that same span, the Sandcrabs have gone 13-21, including winning seven games in 2013. Their fan support has dwindled, and even family members have expressed their reluctance to attend games during this stretch. Not so with the student section. If you were to look at these dozens of teenage supporters for the entire 48 minutes, you might mistake the losing team on the field for the winning team. They paint their bodies, wave around flags and lose their voices from screaming, all for a team that has provided few wins. “I’ve come to learn that this school is one big family,” said Jacob Wagers, one of the faithful student section members. “You support your family, even when you know they might not receive the outcome they deserve. Knowing Seabreeze may not be the best team, the student section tries to support the football team with love and courage. If may be hard to cheer for a losing team, but it isn’t hard to cheer for fellow classmates that you refer to as brothers.” “Ever since my freshman year, when my brother was a senior on the good team, I learned the student section tradition,” Dennis Filipovski added. “Win or lose, being around ‘family’ in the student section feels like a win already, so if we actually win, that’s just a bonus. There is just an indescribable feeling you get when you cheer for Seabreeze, and that’s what makes us show up every Friday night.”

WHO WILL WIN ON FRIDAY? Hey there, football fans. This year, I’ll be making predictions, just for fun. Do you agree with my winners and the scores? Share your thoughts on Twitter @PCOsports.

Flagler Palm Coast at Mainland

Mainland wins 43-0. In the last two seasons, Que’Shaun Byrd’s numbers have dropped due to the inconsistent play and inexperience around him. It seems that if he gains anything on a run, it’s because he has shaken off several defenders and made another miss. On the other hand, Mainland’s defense will feast on quarterback Darrell Thomas’ inexperience. The Bucs appear to have no weaknesses, and quarterback Denzel Houston appears to only get better. He has a slew of receivers to

Atlantic wins 30-20. The Green Wave is well-rested, due to the cancellation of their game last week. But, having to travel to a newly built Atlantic team, I believe the Sharks will give them fits. In their preseason game against New Smyrna Beach, the Sharks put the area on notice that they will not go winless this season, winning by 19 points behind a powered offense and fast defense. Father Lopez still struggles with consistency and will fall to an 0-2 record.

Matanzas vs. Mount Dora Matanzas wins 17-10. Matanzas, too, canceled its game last week, so the Pirates are looking to gain more early-season momentum with a second win. Matanzas edged the Hurricanes 9-7 in a defensive battle last season, and I believe the same will take place this year. Though not perfect, Matanzas showed it has just as much defensive talent as last year, and Philip Moultrie has become a game-changing playmaker. Mount Dora will have problems stopping all of the Pirates’ weapons.

Houston leads Mainland past Bartram Trail Mainland looks to be in playoff form at the beginning of the season. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Mainland Buccaneers continued their winning ways, blowing out Bartram Trail 48-22 on Monday, Sept. 5, in St. Johns. The game was rescheduled due to weather conditions, but Mainland seemed to make the most of the its extra time. After a Kevon McCrary conversion on fourth-and-1, C.J. Wilson scored the game’s opening touchdown from a yard out. Denzel Houston called his own number and scored on a sevenyard run. After giving up two points from a punt block that led to a safety, Mainland responded when Houston hit Jhii Taylor for a 71-yard touchdown pass. 21-2. On the next drive, he found Brian Jenkins for a 15-yard score to make it 28-8. After a Bartram Trail cut into the lead with under two minutes to go in the half, Houston took the Bucs down field and connected with Tank Bell on a three-yard

touchdown before the half. Mainland failed to convert the two-pointer, ending the half with a 34-15 lead. Houston returned in the second half to connect with another different receiver — D’Marcus Adams — for a four-yard touchdown pass, and he ran in another score for six total touchdowns.

IV stands to go Girl Scout project makes IV patients mobile. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

A Girl Scout project will help patients in Speediatrics at Halifax Health who are on IVs become a lot more mobile. Called Lily Pads, the round platforms slip onto the bottom of an IV stand, allowing a place for the patient to sit while maintaining connection with “It’s a great way the IV. The parent or other person can to give back. then easily push the patient down I applaud them.” the hall, getting them out of their JOSEPH McCORMICK room in a fun and unique way. Speediatrics is the pediatrics unit at Halifax Health, for patients up to 18 years old. “We like for the patients to get up and out of their rooms as much as possible,” said Nurse Manager Amy Christie, “and it can be difficult for the parents when they are on an IV. Now they can get to the play room.” Girl Scouts Ashley Boscovich, 13, and Megan McCormick, 14, of Troop 106 in Ormond Beach, made a half-dozen Lily Pads and donated them to the hospital for their Silver Award project, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette (middle school) can get. Girl Scouts at the high school level earn Gold Awards. “It has to be a community service project to make the world a better place,” explained Megan. Ashley and Megan knew they wanted to do a project that helped children, and troop co-leader

Brandi Hartman showed them a YouTube video of Lily Pads that had been invented by a teenager in Washington. The scouts said they immediately agreed to do the project here when they saw the video. “We said, ‘We have to do that,’” Ashley said. Megan’s dad, Joseph, cut out the plywood shapes, and the scouts did the sanding, priming, design and painting. Joseph McCormick said when he heard what the girls were going to do, he got “all choked up,” “It’s a great way to give back. I applaud them,” he said. Alison Boscovich, mother and also troop leader, said the girls in the troop are very empathetic and enjoy caroling at a local nursing home. “They are very involved,” she said. “They’re a good group of girls,” She said Girl Scouts teaches leadership and the girls have taken ownership of the meetings. “They tell me what they want to do,” she said. She has been a leader since Ashley was a Daisy Scout. Designs of the Lily Pads include a mermaid, doughnut, lady bug and Captain America. There’s also a special one to honor Betty Jane France, who recently died. France funded the Speediatrics unit and was known for her philanthropy. “We wanted to do it after we found out all she did for children and Speediatrics,” Ashley said. Megan pointed out that France’s initials are carved on a tree as if a kid did it with a pocket knife, and a car in the design has “Speediatrics” on it. Dana Allen, horticulture manager at Halifax Health and communications coordinator for area

Girl Scouts, helped them get an IV pole they could use to help make the lily pads. Chris O’Brien of Harvard Jolly Architecture donated supplies. The boy in Washington who invented the lily pads had cancer and later died. A group in Seattle makes Lily Pads in his honor, and the project has been spreading across the country. Ashley and Megan said they would make more for a special request. “We had a lot of fun making them and would make them for anyone,” she said. Alison Boscovich can be reached at her State Farm office at 672-5111.
