14 YEARS LATER On the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, Ormond citizens young and old, in unique ways, will be honoring the lives lost. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Though Capt. Meghan Quartier, of Ormond Beach Fire Department Station 93, had only been on the job for a little over a year when the United States was hit with a terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, she still felt the loss of her 343 brothers that day. “I happened to be on duty at the time of the attack,” she said. “As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t matter if you were a brand new firefighter, or on the job 30 years, the impact that day was equal throughout. The camaraderie in this profession is unlike any other.” That camaraderie and desire to honor those that died is what’s pushing Quartier and eight other Ormond Beach firefighters to participate in a Memorial Stair Climb with their other local brothers. lation gear, the firefighters will climb the 29 stories of the Peck Plaza in Daytona Beach Shores enough times to match the 110 flights required to reach the top of the World Trade Center. “The Memorial Stair Climb is going to be very intense,” Quartier said, “but the Ormond Beach firefighters participating will represent and get it done, ’cause that’s what we do.” This is the first time the event is being held in this area, and Quartier’s husband, Battalion Cmdr. Nate Quartier of the Ormond Beach Fire Department Station 92, said it’s a good way to honor the fallen and recognize the dangerous aspects of the job. “It’s important to self-sacrifice for those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Nate Quartier said. “It did hit home more, when some of the dangerous acts of the jobs are thrown in your face.” IN THE CLASSROOM

When Tony Felton was going through a 12-step program to get off drugs seven years ago, he realized he had been using drugs and alcohol to numb the guilt and pain of being sexually abused as a boy. His story will be told this weekend at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center in the play, “Still I Weep.” The musical drama was written by Felton and will be performed by local artists. ‘We told the Lord we’d go anywhere’

Riverbend Community Church welcomes the “Cowboy Preacher” as their new senior pastor. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

This week Scott Menez and his family traveled across the country with one destination in mind: Ormond Beach. After spending most of their time as church planners in the rural areas of California, Nevada and Oregon, Menez and his wife, Gina Menez, decided it was finally time to settle down. “Well, we were looking for a church that was Christ-centered and held to the scripture,” Menez said. “We told the Lord we would go anywhere, and we narrowed our search to four different places: Palm Springs, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Florida. We were actually in the final stages with the church in Wisconsin, but Riverbend kept coming up. So we stepped out in faith and accepted the position.” For the past 30 years of their faith-based careers, Menez and his wife have been starting churches and reforming existing ones that have hit a rough patch. His last position was at Grace Bible Church in Hollister, California, where he spent six years turning them in the right direction after they had undergone some leadership troubles. “I knew we were only supposed to be there for a period of time,” Menez said. “Then we started to look for a new ministry, and I knew this would be the last one where we stay and retire. The goal has always been to settle down.”

Menez’s theological training came through several schools in California, including The Master’s College in Santa Clarita and the Cornerstone Seminary in Vallejo, where he received a divinity degree in pastoral ministry. He has recently served as a board member and instructor at the Cornerstone Seminary, and has spoken at pastors’ conferences in Russia, India, Mexico and the Philippines. He and his wife have four sons, three of which are staying on the West Coast to attend college. With his experience being focused on helping churches become more “Christ-centered,” Menez says he’s excited to go to a church that is already very established and focused. “We don’t see a lot of the usual issues in Riverbend,” Menez said. “So we’re excited to get up and run with them. I’m looking forward to working with a developed pastoral staff — men with great discernment. I love working with men like that.” Menez will be the 10th senior pastor in the 59-year history of Riverbend Church. He replaces Dr. Roy Hargrave, who served more than 25 years in that role before resigning for health reasons. Menez begins in his new role Sept. 20.

Joan Baliker shows her sculpture of a Timucuan Indian that she would like to see displayed at Indian Mound Park on South Beach Street.

Local artist Joan Baliker was looking at a large coquina rock in her backyard garden, and said, “I think I see an Indian in that rock.” She carved a Timucuan Indian, and it’s been on loan to DeLand in their Sculpture Walk for the past two years. It’s now available again, and Baliker recently suggested to the Ormond Beach Quality of Life Advisory Board that the city of Ormond Beach display it at Indian Mound Park on South Beach Street, the site of a Timucuan burial mound. “I just think there should be an Indian there,” she said. Currently, only a historical plaque accompanies the grassy mound in the park. Another of Baliker’s sculptures, “Peace,” a bronze showing a woman in meditation, is on permanent display in the DeLand Sculpture Walk. It had been on loan to the city, but a group of residents decided they wanted it permanently and raised money to purchase it from Baliker. At the Quality of Life meeting, Baliker proposed her Timucuan Indian sculpture be placed on a coquina rock pedestal on the site in Ormond Beach and she is offering to sell it to the city for $2,000. Dr. Philip Shapiro, chairman of the Quality of Life Board, told Baliker that for Ormond Beach

to purchase a sculpture, it would be necessary to go through a formal request for proposals, so that anyone could submit an offer. But he suggested that if she were to donate the sculpture to the city, it would be easier to accomplish. Baliker responded that she makes a living as an artist, so she couldn’t donate it. “It takes a lot of work,” she said. City Manager Joyce Shanahan, city liaison with the board, suggested Baliker get in touch with Ormond MainStreet, because they have funds for art in the Community Redevelopment Area, which is along Granada Boulevard. “I think it would be better off in a more public place,” she said. Shapiro was concerned about vandalism and graffiti and asked how the sculpture would be protected. Baliker said it would be on a high pedestal secured with an iron rod and epoxy and graffiti could be cleaned off with bleach water. She also pointed out that there are sculptures across the street at Ames Park that have been repaired. Board member Debbie Berner said that Baliker should get a sponsor. The board took no action on the proposal.

to counselors, he didn’t realize he had been running from it his entire life. While going through the recovery process, he began writing notes about his childhood experiences. “Out of those notes came these fictitious characters,” he said. “Out of those characters came a story line. It was my way of dealing with the pain.” The musical drama, “Still I Weep,” came out of these writings. SUITABLE FOR THE FAMILY

Even though the subject is serious, Felton said the musical drama is suitable for all ages. “I have my children in this play,” he said. “Kids can come to the play, and they will be very comfortable. “ He said it tells the story without going into painful details about abuse and even has moments of comedy. The play tells the story of a successful businessman who is addicted to drugs after using them to numb the pain of something that happened in his life. Felton said he decided to produce the play to help the people who are too embarrassed or

ashamed to talk about the problem. “There’s a lot of people hurting inside but can’t talk about it,” he said. “We think that’s it’s our own fault, and that’s what made me step forward and put it out there. “ SOMETHING NOT TALKED ABOUT

His goal is to “start a dialogue,” so that childhood sexual abuse can be dealt with. “I am overwhelmed at how many people have been affected by this,” he said. “I’ve had adults stand in front of me and just start crying. It’s prevalent; it’s way too prevalent. And nobody talks about it.” One reason that it’s not talked about, he said, is that it’s often done by family members or family friends. Also, he said it’s very difficult for a man to talk about being abused. This is the first play Felton has written. He’s an aspiring playwright, and has background as an actor. His past local credits include “Race” at City Repertory Theatre in Palm Coast and “Motown” at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center.

The play will run at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13. Remembering 9/11 way she teaches her fifth-grade students at Pathways Elementary School about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. “First, we read an article from a kid-friendly magazine that summarizes the facts,” she said. “Then we go over what they knew or what they’ve heard, and we make a timeline. That usually opens up a discussion about how the country became united again.” Her students also watch a video tribute and write to soldiers thanking them for their service. In the 25 minutes she uses for the lesson, she hopes to teach the kids how the tragic events shaped the nation today. “I feel that it’s important children learn there are events that have happened in the past that change the future forever,” she said. “There’s a war we’re continuing to fight, and it’s important for kids to understand what we’re fighting for. A lot of my kids ask questions about fear, like if it will happen again or where people think it would happen again, which is pretty ingenious of them to think about. It makes them aware of where we are.” She said her students also question the terrorists themselves and often ask her why they hate Americans so much, and what would make them want to kill so many people. “I do it as honestly as I can,”

How something so tragic brought every American together to show how proud we are. I want my students to find honor in the heroes that were there — who saved lives, and continue to protect us every day.” IN THE STREETS

For the second year in a row, Team Red, White and Blue will be hosting a Sept. 11 Remembrance Walk, at 6 p.m. at Dunn’s Attic. Though it used to be a run, Community Outreach Director Tracee Fleming said they wanted everyone to be able to participate. “We have people in walkers and wheelchairs who want to join,” she said. “So we made the walk shorter for disabled citizens and small children. Las year we had a man with an air cast on his foot and a cane in his hand.” Fleming said it’s important for the veterans to have an outlet because a lot of them fought in the wars that came after the attacks. “We want to show veterans ... we haven’t forgotten all the sacrifices they made,” she said. I laughed with a father and son who were feeding fruit to crabs and bothered 10-yearold Noah Steves into getting his pictured taken. Due to the 15 minutes I spent coaxing him out from under a blanket, I’m making every effort I can to make get his face on the top of this page. (It worked!) Upon arrival, I was immediately escorted to meet Ruth Dodson, who is in charge of Friends of St. James, the group with the mission of raising enough money to pay off the church’s debt. A sweet woman who was determined to introduce me to everyone, Dodson was one of those rare breeds who you could tell takes extreme pride in everything she does. “People have a good time, and we are insistent on very hot food,” she said. After saying goodbye to the sweet folks at St. James, I made my way to my final event: movie night in Rockefeller

About once a month this really neat thing happens where nearly four or five awesome Ormond Beach events fall around the same time on the same Friday. It’s exciting, busy, and when it’s over, I’m usually sweaty in places I didn’t know could get sweaty (like behind your knees?!). Thankfully, this past Friday’s carnival locations were all conveniently five minutes away from each other, so no extra driving was involved — though I may have gone back to my car to take advantage of the air conditioning a few times. My first stop was at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum where its members were holding their Free Family Art Night. These events are always my favorite because it’s like a live episode of “Kids Say the Darndest Things.” Scarlett Verzal, 3, looked completely distraught as she stared down at her paper bird that she was currently coloring in. Upset with the amount of green she used, she left the room, saying, “I can’t, Mom, I can’t.” Outside, an adorable girl with curly hair up in pigtails (who by her lack of speaking I believe wanted to remain anonymous) was asked if her bird was a boy or a girl. She shriveled up her face and said, “Ew, I don’t know.” Two-year-old Lincoln Hill’s face lit up when he saw his bird cut out and attached to string. “Woah,” he said, enamored with his own artistic ability. “It’s a shame we lose our sense of wonder of what we’ve done,” said Executive Director Susan Richmond. She is always throwing random words of wisdom or thought-provoking ideas — another reason why the museum is my favorite. Next on the list was a fish fry at St. James Episcopal Church. Sometimes I’m able to sneak in

JUST BORROWING YOUR CARD 8:01 p.m. — 13000 Block of Caroline’s Cove. Theft. The victim said the suspect was staying with him for a few days while looking for a place to rent. One night, he was awakened by the suspect standing over him and putting something into his wallet, which he kept on his nightstand. He checked his wallet and noticed that his debit card had been moved. He went online and saw several pending charges in Daytona Beach, Holly Hill and Ormond Beach, totaling $492. He said he had not given the pin number to the suspect, but had used it in his presence. He said he confronted the suspect, who then admitted to the theft and left the apartment. The victim called the suspect’s boss, and the suspect was terminated. The victim said he did not wish to press charges at this time.

OUTDOOR APPLIANCES 7:33 p.m. — First Block of South Ridgewood Avenue. Theft. The victim said she and her boyfriend left the residence they were renting that morning, and when they returned that night their stove and refrigerator were missing from the yard. Each had a value of $1,000. A neighbor said someone from the city placed a notice in the yard that the residence needed to be cleared of clutter or the homeowner would be fined. The

ANYONE FOLLOWING? 9:38 a.m. — 1500 Block of West Granada Boulevard. Retail Theft. The store employee flagged down an officer and reported a theft in progress. The suspect was said to have $1,000 worth of merchandise in his cart and had made several attempts to leave the store without paying. He would walk past the registers, and then back into the store as if to see if anyone was following him. The suspect finally left the store and was stopped by the officer. The suspect’s truck was parked over the line so that no one could park behind him. The officer noted this was probably done so he could quickly load the truck with the merchandise. A search revealed pills which were a controlled substance. The suspect said they belonged to his mother, and he kept them so she wouldn’t take too many, but he didn’t have the prescription. neighbor said she advised the property owner of the notice, and later the property owner’s employees removed the appliances from the yard. The neighbor said she saw the renters trying to prevent the employees from removing

the items, but the renters said they were not home at the time. The property owner did not answer the phone when called. The renter said she wanted to press charges. STORM-PROOF AND THIEF-PROOF WINDOWS 7:28 a.m. — 1500 Block of Hand Avenue Burglary. The victim came to work that day and found the door and a window shattered. Outside of the business, there were shards of glass, turnedover flower pots, top soil and broken paver bricks. She inspected the inside, and determined nothing was taken. Another employee said several hundred thousand dollars worth of merchandise and equipment were in the building, including expensive namebrand eye glasses. The security video showed a male hit the window with an object that looked like a hammer, but it was a special stormgrade window and he could not gain entry. The suspect then threw a flower pot at the window. The pot did not make it to the window and broke on the ground. He then picked up a brick and threw it at both the door and window. Both were shattered but not broken to the point to allow entry. The suspect had some kind of cloth covering part of his

face. He was seen touching the glass in the video, but no fingerprints could be lifted because he apparently had covered his hands. The flower pot was collected for evidence.

WRONG TIME TO SPEED 3:09 a.m. — First Block of John Anderson Drive DUI Alcohol. The officer was northbound on South Atlantic Avenue, preparing to turn left onto East Granada Boulevard. He heard a loud bass coming from the rear, and a car pulled up in the turn lane next to him very close to his patrol car. When the turn arrow turned green, the car accelerated rapidly, cut across the officer’s lane, and then went back into its own lane before nearly running up onto the curb. The officer followed the car and noticed that it traveled across the outside white line several times. When the officer activated his lights, the driver made an exaggerated turn north onto John Anderson Drive and then pulled over. The suspect said he had not been drinking, but then admitted to having a couple of beers. While being given sobriety exercises, the suspect stepped off the line, nearly tripping over his foot. He then said he had admitted drinking and didn’t need to take the exercises. After being arrested, he told the officers he had an open beer in the glove compartment. At the police department, his breath test showed an alcohol level of 0.245.

COPS CORNER

VISITING OR HIDING? 5:45 a.m. — 300 Block of Center Street Loitering. Possession of Marijuana. A police officer passed a male riding a bicycle with no lights. When he turned around to investigate, the suspect turned into a driveway. Due to numerous car burglaries in the area, the officer drove up to the driveway to investigate and saw the suspect trying to hide between two cars. The suspect said he knew the residents and he was looking for a friend. He denied that he was trying to hide. The suspect said he was going to ask his friend, who lives at the house, for a cigarette. He then stated the friend might not be home but his parents would be. He also stated that he knew the residents because he cuts their grass. The resident at the house said he did not know the suspect, has no lawn service and no one with that name lived at the house. The suspect was arrested for prowling, and marijuana was found in his possession. He then said he did not know the residents and that he hid because he had the marijuana.

Fast-growing franchise coming to Ormond Beach Restaurant founder worked to perfect chicken salad.

One of the fastest-growing restaurant chains in the country is coming to Ormond Beach. A Chicken Salad Chick is set to open Oct. 6 at 75 N. Nova Road (the intersection with Sterthaus Drive). The company started selling franchise locations in January, 2012, and sold 18 within one month, according to Ali Rauch, director of marketing. There are currently 130 franchises of the “fast casual” restaurant. The Ormond Beach location will have 15 flavors of chicken salad as well as homemade sidesalads, deli sandwiches, gourmet soups and baked desserts. Chicken salad is considered Southern, and the décor of the restaurant will be like a “living room in the South,” according to franchise owner Buck Harris. The company was named one of 10 Breakout Brands for 2015 by Nation’s Restaurant News; it was number 37 in Fast Casual Magazine’s Top 100 Movers and Shakers; and was named an Emerging Concept to Watch by QSR Magazine, a trade publication for the fast food industry. Buck and his wife, Brooklyn, are no strangers to the area or restaurants with chicken on the menu. He worked in his dad’s Chick-filA, starting at the age of 8, and later ran his own location in Ormond Beach for 14 years.

Harris said he likes the story of the Chicken Salad Chick founder, Stacy Brown, of Auburn, Alabama, who is the original “chick.” As the story goes, Brown noticed that every restaurant she would visit had its own version of chicken salad, often with too much mayonnaise or other ingredient. So, Brown worked at home until she came up with the perfect recipe. She gave her salads to neighbors, and they became so popular that she and her husband opened a restaurant and later offered franchises. Buck Harris expects the restaurant to bring 35 to 40 jobs, including several part-time. He said the chicken will be fresh and cooked with steam. “There’s not going to be a fryer in back,” Harris said. The Harrises are both healthconscious, and say they can eat at the restaurant every day. Brooklyn Harris is originally from Albany, Georgia, and agrees chicken salad is a Southern thing. “I always ordered the chicken salad,” she said. She also said she’s excited to bring something new to the area. Her husband is from Thomasville, Georgia, and has been in Ormond Beach for 19 years. The restaurant will have a drive-thru, and ingredients will be available for purchase by the pound so people can make their own chicken salad at home. They also will offer catering, which can be buffet style, or with executive

box lunches. Harris said he’s always enjoyed the fast casual food business, because he loves the customers and enjoys working with the employees. He tries to influence the lives of the employees, helping them to set goals or make a budget, for example. “I want to not just be an employer,” he said. “I talk to them about their personal life.” He said he’s going to be very selective in hiring, and only wants outgoing personalities with a “heart for service.” The Harrises are expecting their first child, and in keeping with the theme of the restaurant, it’s going to be a girl, or a “chick.” Another reason Harris went with the franchise is that they are going to allow him to be the franchisee for all of Volusia County. He has an agreement to open three in the county, and hopes to open more.

The Harrises are expecting their first child, and in keeping with the theme of the restaurant, it’s going to be a girl, or a “chick.” The new fast-casual restaurant coming to North Nova Road will feature 15 flavors of chicken salad and several other menu choices.

SPORTS Happy about your wins and losses?

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

O

RIDING A NEW The Green Wave, again, beat its rival, Warner Christian, this time in blowout fashion. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

T

he rivalry began in 2003, but it wasn’t made official until last year, when Father Lopez Catholic Green Wave beat the Warner Christian Eagles for the first time in the series. In case the Eagles supposed last year’s loss was a fluke, the Green Wave (1-1) left no doubts in their latest duel, taking down their rivals 45-21 Friday, Sept. 4, at Lopez. “It feels good to beat them for a second time,” coach Jason Dunlap said. “They had the same offensive line we played last year, and we started two new guys, but we knew we had better skill players, so we knew it would come down to winning the trenches. Our teams know each other so well, and we’re happy to come out with the victory, but they never quit. They were down the whole game, but they never gave up.” Quarterback Josh Spencer, who owns both wins over Warner Christian had his way with the Eagles. The only thing that stopped him all night was the game clock. Spencer played the best game of his high school career, going nearly perfect except a couple of dropped passes

Ryan Atkins caught 190 yards and a touchdown for the Green Wave.

WAVE

and a near touchdown pass where the receiver missed the corner of the end zone by a foot. “Honestly, I was doing stuff I don’t usually do,” Spencer said. “Instead of trying to force things,

I just allowed the game to flow. I made all of my reads, and I chose to throw to the right receivers, who were the ones who made the plays; I just threw the ball. And my lineman played really well,

Juwan Ross leads his team on the field for the first time, after an injury sidelined him for the opener.

although they are young. Everything just seemed to work for us. This was a huge boost for our confidence.” Dunlap praised his quarterback, saying,“I had a quarterback that has played in the NFL, and that’s who I compare Josh to. I’ve never coached a kid who has an arm like this. If he can continue to mature and become a man, his senior year, next year, will be off the charts. He has the arm to make NFL throws.” In their season opener, the Green Wave took the field missing a few key players, including team leader Juwan Ross. Now, with everyone in the game, they will look to continue their momentum and be ready for Atlantic on Friday, Sept. 11, at Lopez.

IN THE GAME

Josh Spencer completed 23 of 27 (85%) passes for 392 yards and rushed for another 47. Spencer hit Dominic Digioia for a 40-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, and, in the second quarter, he found Ryan Atkins down the sideline for a 50-yard score, called his own number for a four-yard touchdown run and, with less than 30 seconds in the half, hooked up with Digioia for a 15-yard touchdown to give Lopez a 31-7 halftime lead. Spencer, again, found Digioia for an eight-yard score, a third touchdown catch for him and a fourth touchdown pass by Spencer. Hogan Wilder finished the Eagles with a four-yard TD run. Kicker Colin Figenscher nailed a 28-yard field goal and was perfect on all extra points. Josh Spencer and Dominic Digioia linked up for three touchdowns.

n any level of competition, whether sports, video games, board and card games – such as poker or chess, or a simple stare down contest — competitors seem to either walk away disappointed or excited, or a little bit of both. While I don’t play much sports, video games or card and board games anymore, I still manage to hold my own, when challenged. Occasionally, I have to prove myself, when I go to my hometown in Alabama, or if my friend is feeling froggy in chess. My cousin in Alabama has never beaten me in a Madden video game, dating back to 2006, and, when I recently visited him, he expressed to me how much his game had evolved, and that he was going to beat me by at least two touchdowns. I have to be honest: I was a little worried that the streak might finally end, seeing that I hadn’t played in nearly a year, but I ended up beating him with a last-minute scoring drive (I still have it). My best friend, who has begun to challenge me in chess, still finds it difficult to beat me, though I haven’t played in years, nearly a decade. When my cousin ever beats me in Madden, and, or when I lose in the FIFA and NBA 2K video games, I will often feel disappointed. Why? Because I never expect to lose. I see this with the Mainland Buccaneers. No team scares them. If they don’t win the state championship this year, no matter how close they get, they will deem it a failure. While a championship for Matanzas may seem inconceivable, seeing they have yet to finish any season with a winning record, the Pirates’ confidence gets closer and closer to that belief with every win. I recently spoke to a few of their players about their schedule, and the only team they think can beat them is Mainland (they play Oct. 16). That says a lot about a team that was previously 2-7. One guy went as far as to say he wouldn’t be satisfied, if they loss by more than two touchdowns to the area powerhouse, but I know the Bucs think otherwise. A former Buc said he knows Mainland is going to destroy both Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas, and some current players echoed his opinion. Just imagine if Mainland barely squeaks by the Bulldogs or the Pirates. Though it will be a win, the winners would probably take it as a loss, and the losers would consider it a moral victory. That’s the psychology of expectations.

down, which seemed to halt any momentum Bartram Trail had going. Junior quarterback Denzel Houston connected with Randy Baker for a 45-yard score, Brant Williams for a 55-yard touchdown pass, and toward the end of the game, found Jason Colubiale from 15 yards out for his first ever touchdown catch. While the Bucs were able to drop 50, Houston was not too thrilled with his team’s play. “It was a good win, but it could’ve been a lot better,” Houston said. “The team is playing good, but we can play a lot better on both sides of the ball.” Up next for the Bucs is Flagler Palm Coast at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at FPC.

It’s been another tough start to the Sandcrabs’ season, as they were held in check by the DeLand Bulldogs in a 44-17 losing effort Friday, Sept. 4, at DeLand. Unlike the season opener, Seabreeze (0-2) did score, but they gave up too many yards and points to ever make run. Quarterback Anthony Butler threw his first touchdown of the season, a 17-yard hookup with Greg Dotson, and, later in the game, he scrambled to score a nine-yard touchdown run. Noah Motto provided the other points, a 21yard field goal and two extra points. The Sandcrabs and head coach Skip Saunier will look for win No. 1, when they play the University Titans at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Daytona Municipal Stadium.

Open gym Ormond Beach Gymnastics Center will host another open gym for anyone between the ages of 8-21 from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at 432 N. Nova Road. Whether you are a beginner or have gymnastics experience, you can come by and practice old skills or brush up on new skills. This will be an open gym format, and there will only be light spotting. Coaches will be on the floor at all times. Call 676-3250.

The Bears tried to put up a fight, but the Bucs’ talent proved to be too much in their 56-24 thumping Friday, Sept. 4, in Daytona. Mainland (2-0) began its scoring onslaught early in the game, when speedster Adrian Killins burst through the hole for an 82-yard touchdown run on the Bucs’ second play of the game. On their next drive, Killins found the end zone a second time, from 14 yards out, which also pushed him past the century mark in just two Mainland possessions. Although the Bucs were massively favored to win, Bartram Trail didn’t back down. They exchanged big plays with Florida’s 6A top team, and, after recovering its own onside kick, the Bears were in position to take the lead, but Jachai Polite forced a fumble and returned it all the way back for a 75-yard touch-

heltered from the heat by the CocaCola Pavilion in Destination Daytona, Joseph Davis races around the arena in speed so fast you barely notice the words on the back of his blue cape that ironically reads, “Walk Now for Autism.” Davis is the young face of Team Joseph, a group formed to support the child as he learns to live a happy and productive life with autism. When he was diagnosed in 2011, his mother, Kathleen Davis, was told he would not be able to talk or be in social situations. Through connections with organizations like Autism Speaks, the family was able to get Joseph Davis on the right path to being independent. He will be starting mainstream first grade next year. To support the organization that helped their son, Team Joseph hosted a Kick Off Party for Autism Speaks’ annual fundraising event Walk Now for Autism. This year the Volusia County Walk will be joining forces with the Orlando Walk to create the Central Florida Walk Now for Autism Speaks. The joint effort will provide greater exposure for autism and offer additional resources, contacts and friends for anyone affected with autism. Davis said the connection with Orlando is beneficial because many families have to travel over there to get support, like speech therapists, for their autistic children. “I’ve managed to survive over here,” Kathleen Davis laughed, “but a lot of people have to make the drive. I hope by partnering with Orlando, it will help us get some more stuff over here.” To find out more about future events, Walk Now for Autism Speaks, or to donate, please email Kathleen Davis at teamjoseph3@gmail.com.

Wanted: Cooler weather and time to walk Exercise is healthy for pets and their owners.

behind you, it is probably time to rethink your exercise time with him. Muscle strain isn’t just an older dog concern. Puppies have boundless energy, but too much exercise can strain growing muscles and bones. Dogs with short noses can overheat in any weather. When walking, whether it’s through one of the state parks or a paved path, always keep your pup on a leash. Many like to use an extendable leash; they give the dog a chance to explore while still under your control. Control is the operative word. If you are walking in the woods, it’s a good idea to keep them close and their noses out of trouble. Snakes and other critters call the woods home, and, for the most part, want nothing

We have to believe that cooler weather is coming, and that soon we will be able to head outside again — with our pooches, of course. On any walk, always bring a water bottle for your dog. I have used the inverted lid for a bowl, but I have a small dog. Larger dog owners can get a collapsible canvass bowl, or, if your dog doesn’t like to drink on walks, squirt the water into his mouth. It is extremely important to offer your dog fresh water, especially at the beach. Salt water is very unhealthy for dogs. If your dog drinks a lot of salt water, do not try to treat him by giving him fresh water, instead take him to a veterinary clinic immediately. The vet will most likely hook him up to an IV to restore fluids and electrolytes. Once home, it’s always a good idea to check for ticks. Bathe them or rinse off their fur, paying particular attention to their paws. Hope to see you out there!

How and why to help the Boys and Girls Clubs Donations helped, but fundraising still needed. WAYNE GRANT

FUNDRAISERS FOR THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB

NEWS EDITOR

Joe Sullivan, chief professional officer for the Volusia/Flagler Boys and Girls Clubs, grew up in the Boys Clubs in Minneapolis. He doesn’t remember the facilities; he remembers the people. “I remember that one staff member that took time to help me out,” he said. That’s why he has been working in local Boys and Girls Clubs for 23 years. He knows what a difference they can make in a young person’s life. After being hurt by state budget cuts this year, donors have stepped in to help, and replaced the state money. But Sullivan said they still need to raise money because state cuts are expected to continue, and they must raise 96% of their own funding each year. “We’re set for the short term,” he said. “But we’ve got to get back into the saddle.” Chris Tolland, of Ormond Beach, an executive at Brown and Brown Insurance who is on the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Clubs, hopes to raise money with fundraisers this October, including Swing for Success and Run for Success (see box). He remembers a child, at the organization’s annual steak dinner fundraiser, who said, “I

haven’t had steak in a long time.” “It’s special to see how appreciative they are,” he said. He said the Boys and Girls Clubs of Volusia / Flagler provide a safe place for children to learn and grow, and have positive relationships with caring adult professionals. “They get help with their studies and they are physically active,” Tolland said. Sullivan said one fundraising challenge is that people here have

not grown up with the local Boys and Girls clubs, because they have only been around 23 years. “We need people with wealth and influence to help poor kids and families,” he said. There are no clubs in Ormond Beach, but local kids can attend the Holly Hill facility. There are also clubs in Daytona Beach and Palm Coast. The program helps the underprivileged, with 92% of the kids on the free-lunch program. It’s

busier in the summer, when they don’t have school to occupy their time. When they announced the state funding cuts this year, businessman and philanthropist Gale Lemerand pledged to match $100,000 in donations. They were able to raise the money through many private and corporate contributions. In addition, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office donated $100,000 in confiscated drug money.

Security First ranks high in Florida Trend survey ‘Bring Your Child to Work Day’ cited as an example of innovations that scored high on employee surveys. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Security First Insurance, founded 10 years ago by former state senator Locke Burt, of Ormond Beach, has become the state’s third-largest homeowners insurance company and was recently recognized by Florida Trend magazine in their annual Best Companies to Work For competition. The company, headquartered at 140 S. Atlantic Ave., was ranked highest among all Florida homeowners insurance companies and seventh among all midsize companies of 100 to 250 employees. Each year, Florida Trend lists 100 companies throughout Florida that exhibit workplace excellence. The magazine ranks companies that enter the competition by reviewing anonymous surveys filled out by employees on topics

such as workplace environment, company policies, benefits, leadership, corporate culture and communications. Marissa Buckley, vice president of marketing, said in an email that the company recently had a “Bring Your Child to Work Day.” “This was an idea that came from one of our call center employees,” she said. “My fiveyear-old was so excited to learn what I do all day and I feel so good knowing that each day when I am not with her, she can visualize where I am and what I’m doing. Several employees had this same feedback and shared their gratitude on our company intranet.” Human Resources Director Frank Molinario described the Bring your Child to Work day as “a blast.” “It was not as productive as we hoped,” he said with a laugh.

He said tours and a lunch were arranged, plus there was an ice cream truck. The children had a lot of good questions and his own kids pretended to interview each other in his office, he said. “It was worth the logistics we put into it,” he said. In October, they are planning a family skate night. Security First Insurance offers an employee wellness program, birthdays off with pay and tuition reimbursement to full-time employees. Molinario said employees meet with Burt and company executives at leadership luncheons where they have candid discussions. He said management has

received a lot of ideas in the meetings. “We have an open-door policy,” he said. “We really want their feedback.” They have communication workshops to help all employees communicate better, which is something needed at most companies. In a written statement, President and Chairman Burt, who was state senator from 1991 to 2002, said the company will continue creating a work environment that fosters collaboration, innovation and growth, and where employees feel like they are part of the family.

The company has about 130 employees and provides insurance to more than 200,000 customers statewide.

Order up! Elks’ Labor Day meal draws a crowd The Ormond Beach Elks Lodge 2193 hosted its annual cookout. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

The line of people never stopped Monday afternoon at the Ormond Beach Elks Lodge 2193’s annual Labor Day Cookout. With Elaine Schutte holding down the fort of food, she kept the hungry crowds moving with just a few short sentences. “Hamburgers and hot dogs are coming,” she shouted, “and if you don’t see it up here, we don’t have it.” Though the Elks usually draw a big crowd for their cookouts, Schutte said it’s never been at that full of a capacity before. And only one factor could account for that: free food. “Everything you see in this room was donated by one of our members,” Schutte said with a

MAKING HISTORY: 70 years of your memories, in the Howells’ next book Ron and Howell are once again teaming up to create a history book for another community pillar. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Thanks to his artistic mother, John Fischer spent a lot of his time in the Ormond Beach Memorial Art Museum. Board member and curator Sara Fischer appreciated shining a spotlight on the different kinds of local talent — including her own. “There was a portrait of me hanging on these walls once,” John Fischer chuckled as he walked through the museum recently. “She did a Pablo Picasso-style painting of me once, not with the messed up faces or anything. I modeled quite a bit for her.” Fischer’s is just one memory that will be featured in the museum’s upcoming history book. Dedicated to the last 70 years the organization has been a part of the community, the book is being written by local historians, re-

enactors and authors Alice Howell and Ron Howell. “It’s been an evolutionary process,” Ron Howell said. “Together, we’ve written 10 books about Ormond Beach’s history, and Susan Richmond contacted us about writing this one.” The couple moved to Ormond in 1990, and have been heavily involved in preserving and teaching local history since. The Howells perform in local events and private parties as re-enactors of Ormond Beach historical figures, they are involved in the Ormond Beach Historical Society and were instrumental in setting up the first trolly ride that bussed around classes of fourth-graders back in 2006. “We’ve always sought out historical places,” Ron Howell said. “We met when I was working as a young engineer, and my company hired Alice as a typist. We designed the communication technology that put man on the moon. We’ve got quite a history together.” After being married for 36 years, the couple attempted to retire and live a simpler life, but now they’re busier than ever. “We ended up starting two new companies,” Ron Howell said, “one being an computer engineer service and the other was a pub-
