+ Police raising awareness, money for memorial Four Ormond Beach police officers are currently training to take part in the Police Unity Tour, where they will join hundreds of other law enforcement officers from around the nation next May in a three-day, 250-mile bike ride from Portsmouth, Virginia, to Washington, D.C. The purpose of the ride is to raise money and awareness to support the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial and Museum, which honors the more than 20,000 men and women who have been killed in the line of duty. Officer Amberly Michaelis, Sgt. Lisa Rosenthal, Sgt. Jamie Gogarty and Lt. Jesse Godfrey are taking part, and to qualify, they must raise $2,000 each in donations. The memorial and museum, located in Washington, D.C., relies on charitable donations. For links to officers’ donation pages, see ormondbeachobserver.com. Call 676-3525.

Argosy: from motel to beach parking lot Some disagree with using ECHO funds for Argosy purchase. Sitting in their living room at the Argosy Motel, looking out toward the Atlantic Ocean, owners Greg and Sharon Clark laugh when you say running a beachside motel must be a dream. “What you have to understand is that you have to work,” Greg Clark said. “It’s not what it appears to be.” The Clarks recently agreed to sell the 0.69-acre property at 1255 N. Ocean Shore Blvd. to Volusia County for $1.25 million. The county plans to convert it to a parking lot for 56 cars. It’s been in the Clark family since his dad, Douglas, built it in 1952, and it’s the kind of

But thanks to two dozen community leaders, a CDBG grant from Volusia County, a private foundation donation, gifts from private individuals and in-kind donations from experts in engineering and roofing consultants, the council was able to replace the roof through its “Raise the Roof” campaign. The parents Kathleen Davis invited to her home Sept. 20 made an attempt to apologize in advance for their autistic children’s predictably unpredictable behavior. But for every “she might write on your walls” or “he might tear up your paper,” Davis smiled, waved their worries away with her hand and said, “Excuse me, have you met Joseph?” Joseph Davis, her 5-year-old autistic son, is in their living room, loudly complaining about trying to print a photo of a red house with blue shutters — his current obsession, according to his father, Scott Davis. Though it might be overwhelming to some, to the Davis family, this kind of chaos feels just like home. “Things are written on our walls, and there is paper from the printer everywhere,” Kathleen Davis smiled while talking to the other moms. “But who cares? Life goes on.” This kind of positivity toward her son’s condition is exactly what inspired Kathleen Davis to start an autism support group in her home. A month ago, she was struggling to get support to create the kind of happy and casual environment she wanted. But now it has happened, and it’s filling up her kitchen. Five parents attended the Davis’ group Saturday morning to discuss siblings of autistic children with Meade McHenry, a board-certified behavior analyst and senior consultant for autism therapy program Butterfly Effects. “There can be a lot of stress for both kids,” McHenry said. “Sometimes the kid with the diagnosis is exhibiting certain behaviors and your other child starts engaging in those same behaviors. And when the other child starts asking what’s wrong with their brother or sister, that can be the hardest thing.” The discussion ran for a little over an hour, with parents trading tips

Volunteers remove hazardous trash Residents picked up discarded items at the beach and river banks throughout the county. Volunteers dodged raindrops while picking up trash at five different sites along the ocean and Halifax River in Ormond Beach on Sept. 20. Throughout all of Volusia County, 1,900 people had signed up at 41 sites. The rain may have kept some away, but final figures were not available at press time. Typically, the most common item found on the annual cleanup is cigarette butts, at 39%. Next are plastic pieces at 15% and bottle caps at 9%. Peculiar items found in the past include shoes, toys, fake fingernails, sink parts, TVs and auto parts. Becki O’Keefe, site manager at Andy Romano Park, said hypodermic needles and balloons are also commonly found. “Any trash in the ocean can injure marine life,” she said. “Plastic bottle caps are the most commonly found items in the stomachs of sea birds.” August Wenger, a volunteer who was there with a group from Villari’s Martial Arts, Ormond Beach, said he had learned at the Marine Science Center that cigarette butts can impact the intestines of birds. Discarded fishing line is also a common problem, and fishermen are encouraged to recycle it. Detailed information on trash collected is compiled by the volunteers each year and provided to the Ocean Conservancy.
INBRIEF + Waste collection fees to rise in Ormond The fees for solid waste, yard waste and recycling collection will increase as of Oct. 1. The City Commission approved a contract with Waste Pro at their Sept. 15 meeting. The current company is Waste Management. Residential collection will go from $13.86 to $14.54, and recycling from $2.95 to $3.07. Commercial service fees were also increased. The city is currently paying $4,068,881 per year, and the new contract calls for $4,957,135 per year.
+ Ormond to buy $600,000 software Ludi Lelis and her son, Nathaniel Spence, keep track of trash they find on the beach.
Cicely Hartwick, of Ormond Beach, said her daughter, Dega, was concerned about sea life after visiting the Marine Science Center, so they decided to take part in the cleanup.

READING THE GREENS By Wayne Grant | News Editor
Golf tournament raises money for literacy The Volusia Literacy Council tutors 250 residents annually in reading and math skills. Bill Rice and his wife, Carol, of Ormond Beach, recall a day many years ago when they were in a meeting at church, and they were passing around a Bible for each person to read a verse. They saw panic in a man’s face as the book got closer to him. It was obvious he had trouble reading. It was that moment that made them start thinking about the importance of adult literacy. They had been looking for a place to volunteer so joined the Volusia Literacy Council, and now, about 16 years later, are still tutoring. They’ve always worked at Reality House, a halfway house for those with drug or alcohol problems. “It’s a good feeling when a person makes improvement, or even gets their GED, which improves their job chances,” Rice said. The council had one of their four annual fundraisers on Sept.

The City Commission has awarded a contract to Avolve Software Corp. to provide software to streamline and modernize the city’s permit process. Plans will be submitted online rather than on paper. Many design companies currently submit plans online, according to Planning Director Rick Goss. The cost will be about $600,000 over a five-year period. Mayor Ed Kelley was the lone no vote, saying he would like to see a less expensive proposal. City Manager Joyce Shanahan said that individuals installing a patio, for example, will be able to submit plans on paper.
+ City OKs chemical contracts for water The City Commission recently accepted bids from suppliers of chemicals to be used in water treatment for the coming year. The lone “no” vote came from Commissioner Troy Kent. The cost for chemicals is estimated at $519,000. In his remarks before the vote, Kent said that several years ago, he sent a letter to the company that supplies fluoride (hydrofluosilicic acid), asking them if they would vouch for the safety of the chemical, and they did not respond. “Until they respond, or the City Commission makes a water accountability ordinance, I vote no,” he said. After the meeting, Kent said he first began to research the issue when the Centers for Disease Control kept changing the recommendation for the amount of fluoride that is safe. In the past he has proposed an ordinance stating that anything added to water to treat human beings, such as fluoride, should be certified by the supplier to be safe for human consumption from infancy to old age. He said he plans to put it forward again. “Should we be medicating people with our water supply just because it’s been done since the 1950s?” he asked. The amount of fluoride in Ormond Beach city water meets U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ recommendations.

ARGOSY / FROM PAGE 1A ing from guests about the closing. “The emails people send are really sad,” Sharon Clark said. “I went to work crying the other day.” She said one couple who have vacationed there for 40 years said they are coming one more time. Greg Clark said he is getting tired of people “pouting” about the motel closing, but after growing up there, he’s feeling nostalgic, too. He said someone told him he was going through the same things a grieving person goes through after losing a loved one. He said the benefit of running the motel was not being on the beach, but rather meeting people and making friends through the years. He said when people are on vacation, they have time to talk. “The walls come down and they exhibit their heart,” he said. But he is glad it’s going to be a parking lot. “It’s thrilling to me that I can buy a house over here, and park my truck and visit my beach,” he said. He said that stretch of beach with its natural dunes is the best beach in the area. But the years have taken their toll on the motel, and it has requiring a lot of upkeep. “It’s very tiring,” Sharon Clark said. Also, they have four children and 10 grandchildren (with one on the way), whom they would like to visit more often. The final straw was the failure of one of the septic drain fields for one of the cabins. They are faced with replacing

drain fields or hooking up to the sewer along State Road A1A, and both would be too much of an investment for the aging structure. Greg Clark was born in 1954 and moved away as a young man to work in construction. In 2000, he and his wife took over the motel after his mother, Phyllis, passed away.
Does a parking lot qualify for the county’s ECHO funds?
While Greg Clark is happy the place is going to be a parking lot, some are not in favor of using the ECHO funds. “I don’t think the community knows how ECHO funds are being used,” said Amy Murphy-Demeo, of Ormond Beach. The county is getting the money for the property from three sources, Ponce Inlet Port Authority, Volusia ECHO and general
fund reserves, with each source providing $416,000. ECHO funds come from voter-approved taxes to be spent on four elements, which form the acronym: environmental, cultural, historical and outdoor recreation projects and institutions. County officials believe the parking provides access to recreation, but MurphyDemeo does not believe a parking lot fits the definition of how ECHO funds should be used. The description can be found on the volusia.org website, by searching for “ECHO.” “Parking will not enrich the lives of the citizens of Volusia as does community theatre, arts and science museums, cultural events and historical places,” she wrote in an email. “Do we want an oceanfront view to be a parking lot?” she asked. “I wouldn’t want to look down on a parking lot from a hotel.” Dave Byron, Volusia County spokesman, said there are three ways that ECHO money can be spent. A government or agency can apply for a grant, which will be considered by the ECHO board. If granted, ECHO funds will provide in a 50% match. The second way is emergency repairs to historic structures, which are also approved by the board. The third method requires no approval by the ECHO board. The County Council can spend ECHO money in a “direct expenditure,” with a majority vote. Byron said that method of spending has always been in the ECHO bylaws. wayne@ormondbeachobserver.com

August 2014 unemployment rates were 9.5% in Flagler County and 6.5% in Volusia County. Nonagricultural employment in Volusia County was 159,100 in August, 2014, which was up 2,300 jobs (1.5%) over the year. Statewide employment increased by 2.7% over the same time period. Five of the 10 major industries gained jobs over the year, led by professional and business services (an additional 1,500 jobs). Manufacturing increased 300 jobs; and mining, logging, and construction, and education and health services, increased 200 jobs each. “Other services” gained 500 jobs. Trade, transportation, and utilities lost 200 jobs; and government and information lost 100 jobs each.

Meet Daddy, the great helper When my wife was out of town recently, I was left with one of a father’s most terrifying tasks: fixing your daughter’s hair. “Do you know the best number of ponytails?” Ellie, 4, asked me before preschool. “How about one?” “The best number of ponytails is two,” she said. One, I can handle. BRIAN Shove it through the MCMILLAN hair tie, twist, shove it through again, done. But two requires a sixth sense, like pinning tails on donkeys, or parallel parking.
“Hold still,” I said. I did my best, gathering her curly brown hair into two distinct bouquets and cinching them up tight. But when I attempted to admire my handiwork, no admiration was warranted. One ponytail was about halfway up her head, and the other was too low. Two more tries later, and the ponytails were secure and relatively even. But, look at the time! We have to go, and there’s still nothing ready for show-andtell! The letter of the week is M. “I want to bring Rainbow Monkey,” she said. “Can’t find Rainbow Monkey,” I said, pawing through the bin of stuffed animals. “How about this monkey instead?” “That’s a bunny.” “Are you sure? Looks like a monkey.”
She laughed, with her typical disregard for the passing time and our impending tardiness. “How about this?” I said, holding up a unicorn. “It’s a ‘municorn,’ get it?” She didn’t reply. Back to the bin. And then, in a classic example of deus ex machina, Minnie Mouse appeared. Ellie was satisfied. Two M’s! She said, “You are a great helper, Daddy.”

I’m not lying when I say an actual tornado roared through my bedroom this past weekend. Except instead of containing cows and small houses like in the movie, “Twister,” old sweaters, bell bottom jeans and stained T-shirts spiraled out of this one. It was Friday night, and, as on most Friday

nights, I was struggling to find something to wear for the evening. I could literally feel my biceps getting a workout from pushing through what felt like hundreds of shirts squeezed tightly into my closet. After finally locating the top I was looking for, I had to use both arms to pull it out from the claws of my walk-in closet. Things were clearly out of hand. I called to recruit my mom to help, and she agreed to drive up the next day to help me sort through the mess. When she arrived, I had already started making a pile of giveaways, which may or may not have been composed exclusively of clothes she had given me. “ T h e r e ’s no way you can get rid of this,” she cried while holding up a shirt with a tiger on it that was clearly meant for a 12-year-old. I tried to explain to her that I had simply grown out of promoting large zoo animals on my shirts and that is wasn’t cool anymore. But she waved me off, threw the shirt back into the “keep” pile and smirked, “You don’t even know what cool is.” Tensions rose throughout the afternoon, as we both kept tossing shirts back and forth from pile to pile. Both of us were clearly convinced that the other just had no clue how to dress. Eventually, the attitudes changed after I foolishly tried on a pair of skinny jeans I had held onto since ninth grade. There’s nothing like laugh-
ing at a muffin top to bring to mother and daughter back together. Once we got my walk-in closet cleared enough to where you could actually walk into it, we took the giveaway pile back to my mom’s house to spread the wealth. My dad, seeing us lug in overstuffed trash bags, suddenly had a game of golf to play. We divided up the treasure into three different piles: one for my brother’s girlfriend or one of my cousins, one to sell to a resale shop and one to donate to Goodwill. Those three piles got divided into more and more piles until we eventually had 15 piles spread throughout the house ready for their new closet homes. Then we made the calls. Old high school buds, my mom’s thrifty friends and my middle-school aged cousin marched through our living room that had quickly transformed into a consignment shop. My dad returned to see all the ladies and suddenly had to go out for a beer. My younger cousin was the last customer left, and she was in awe over a Tshirt she had just found. One look at my mom’s face and I knew my cousin had grabbed the tiger T-shirt I had sneaked back into the giveaway pile. Because I was right: It was for 12-year-olds. that location, so figured the suspect had ducked into a yard when he saw the patrol car. Searching for the suspect, another officer heard “crunching” from some bushes in a backyard. The officer looked over the
fence and saw the suspect walking slowly as if trying to conceal himself in the darkness. The officer ordered him to the ground. The suspect complied, but could not be secured right away because he was on the other side of the fence. Other officers, hearing the commotion, arrived and secured the suspect and escorted him to a patrol car. In a post-Miranda interview, the suspect was asked what he was doing sneaking around in a backyard. He said he saw a truck coming so was just trying to get out of the road. When told that it must have taken a lot of effort to jump over the fence, the suspect said the gate was open. When told the gate was closed when officers arrived, he said he must have closed it behind him. Asked directly if he was hiding from the officers, he said no. Since he could not provide a good reason for being in the backyard, he was charged with loitering and prowling in addition to the warrants.

The officer said he would give them a warning, but future violations could result in a fine. The solicitors said they would go to City Hall the next day to obtain the permit.

Mainland, American Heritage: The rematch
Jeff Dawsey | Sports Writer
Mainland puts its perfect season on the line for the second straight year, against the Stallions. Jeff Dawsey
Mainland player Genesis Vargas
Vargas: math, volleyball, student government Genesis Vargas didn’t always like volleyball or math. She didn’t find it reasonable for sports to potentially distract her from her schoolwork, and she thought that math was too difficult. Now a senior, Vargas is the two-year running student government president and loves both of the things she once disJEFF liked. “There were DAWSEY times when I questioned if playing volleyball on a competitive high school team was right for me,” Vargas said. “Yet, now that I’ve been playing since my freshman year, I know that volleyball is one of the best things that I’ve ever done. It’s fun.” Vargas says that the Lady Buccaneers are a close-knit team, which makes playing worthwhile. They get to bond and create memorable moments. Vargas also loves mathematics. She considers math to be an art as well as a science. “When I was having the most trouble with algebra in middle school, my teacher, Mr. Frank Mallace, went above and beyond teaching math,” she said. Vargas currently tutors in the subject, and she hopes to eventually become a data analyst and a math teacher. “I want to pour into others’ lives the same way that my teachers have poured their knowledge into my life,” Vargas said. “Education is important to kids, and whenever teachers do it the right way, it can inspire kids.”
The Mainland Buccaneers (4-0) have not been challenged this season. They have forced the mercy rule in every game thus far. After their 63-0 homecoming win against Pine Ridge, the Buccaneers had one thing in mind: American Heritage. They will host the Stallions Friday, Sept. 26, in a rematch from last year. “We’re ready for them,” quarterback Denzel Houston said. “We’ve been coached up. We’ve been preparing for them.” Head coach Scott Wilson said of the Stallions: “They’re a state powerhouse. We had a tough game against them last year when they beat us, but they’re coming here this year.” American Heritage and the Bucs played to a 6-0 final last year, which was Mainland’s only regular season loss and shutout. The only score came from Julian Perez, who scored on a defensive fumble return. Though there are some similarities from their last outing, such as Mainland’s undefeated record and the Stallions’ one loss, there is a big difference this year: Denzel Houston. Houston is the area’s top-ranked passer this season in almost every category, according to Wilson. The firstyear starter has dominated since his inaugural game against Lake Mary in the preseason, when he threw for over 350 yards and three touchdowns.

Kaylo Hannah and Mainland will have their hands full as they seek redemption from last year against American Heritage.
Bowling Bucs
Mainland lost to Flagler Palm Coast 1,955-852 Sept. 17 in girls bowling. FPC’s Shelby Taulbee rolled a 604 series. The boys team won 2566-2433. Mainland’s Joey Goodman rolled a 685.

Avery Walker gets tackled after recovering a fumble.
On homecoming night, the Mainland Buccaneers blanked the Pine Ridge Panthers, 63-0, on Sept. 19, at Municipal Stadium. The Buccaneers had no problems moving the ball against the Panthers. Their first and only fourth down and nonscoring drive came on their last possession of the game, when their third and fourth backups were playing. Quarterback Denzel Houston remained hot, throwing five touchdown passes in the first two quarters. He connected with Adrian Killins on a 40-yard score, Kaylo Hannah for 23 yard, Wilfred Taylor 83, Jacob Tilghman 20 and Will Collins on a 19-yard touchdown pass. “I’m glad that we won, but I feel normal,” Houston said. “I can’t get the big head. I try to keep my head where it’s supposed to be.” Other scores include two Adrian Killins touchdown runs, a 15-yard run by Ryan Mack and a 1-yard run by Henry Reese. “I thought we played pretty well,” coach Scott Wilson said. “We have American Heritage next week, so our main focus was to get out of this game healthy, and we did that.” Last year the Bucs lost an ugly game to American Heritage 6-0. The homecoming king and queen were J.T. Vail and Zhakyia Faircloth.

FIRST WIN Seabreeze forced enough turnovers against New Smyrna Beach to win its first game this season, 17-7, Sept. 19, at NSB. “When we got on the field, we started clicking as a team,” said Raushod Floyd, who criticized his team for playing selfishly against Flagler Palm Coast. Floyd took a screen pass from Justin Muller 48 yards for a first-half touchdown. Sam Hayworth added a field goal, and Scott Summers returned a punt 75 yards for another score. Bubba Ballish iced the game with a fumble recovery. Next up: Seabreeze hosts Bartram Trail Sept. 25.

During the seven-hour event, professional judges tasted the food of both professional and amateur grillers. Of the many residents who came to the event, 300 signed up to be amateur judges who would determine the People’s Choice Awards for both categories. Seven professional grillers and 14 amateur grillers competed for the titles. Both grill categories had six chances of winning. “The professionals are people who grill as a part of their business,” Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce Event Planner Tia Rush said. “Ameuter grillers are our backyard grillers that all think they rock more than the other. CAT PEOPLE By Emily Blackwood | Staff Writer
Cat lovers unite at Cat Fanciers show Felines filled the Nova Community Center. The atmosphere was simply purr-fect Sept. 20 and 21 as the Cat Club of the Palm Beaches hosted its annual summer cat show. Also sponsored by the Cat Fanciers Association, the thirdannual show featured hundreds of different breeds competing in looks and agility. Show Manager Karen Lane said the cats are judged based on a standard of the ideal cat of that breed. “Every judge will read that standard and he or she will visualize that standard in a slightly different way,” Lane said. “So it’s subjective.” Lane said she showed horses and dogs before she got into cat shows. “I don’t live on a farm anymore,” said Lane, who has been with the club for 27 years. “I live in a normal person’s house. You can raise cats anywhere.” Though she used to be a dog person, she’s team cat now and owns six felines. “The cat has a more personal relationship with the owner,” Lane said. “I have a home office, and there is never a time when I don’t have a four-legged secretary. They’re there, right next to the keyboard, and they’re always available to be pet and to give you attention. The relationship with the cat is much more intimate.”
