You can’t burn F down paradise

Emily Blackwood

The support Bill Barber and Lois Ayers received from total strangers after their house burned down convinced the couple that they’ve found their home. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

or Bill Barber and Lois Ayers, paradise was a home in Ormond-by-the-Sea with enough room for their two dogs, and a five-minute walk to the beach. The two months the couple spent there were nothing short of perfect. Feeling settled in, with just a few final touches remaining, the couple was looking forward to spending the rest of their lives in their dream home. But what happens when your dream home burns to the ground?

CONNECTION FEE WAIVED

Incentives are offered where the water is available. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

The City Commission approved an incentive program Sept. 20 to encourage residents on the beachside to connect to the reclaimed water system for irrigation. Availability has recently been expanded south of Granada Boulevard. Having more people connect will “reduce the city’s discharge of wastewater effluent and nutrients to the Halifax River,” according to a staff report to the City Commission. Also, using reclaimed water for irrigation means drawing less water from the aquifer. Commissioner Rick Boehm said he hopes people realize the benefits of hooking up to the reclaimed water. “It’s a great benefit to the environment as a whole,” he said. “It’s the right way to do things.” The city produces about 32 million gallons of wastewater every week. This includes all the water flushed down toilets and emptied down drains in homes. About 27 million gallons are reused for irrigation. That leaves about five million gallons every week that is released into the Halifax River after being treated to standards set by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The city furnishes reclaimed water for irrigation not only to the beachside, but also some mainland neighborhoods and golf courses. Reclaimed water has been available north of Granada Boulevard and was introduced south of Granada Boulevard in 2013. The city received a grant this year from the St. Johns River Water Management District, which will pay one third of the cost of expanding the system further. The city plans to promote the incentive program to residents who are eligible.

Homeowners electing to connect to the reclaimed water system are currently required to get a permit and pay a fee of $245, which includes $215 for the connection fee and $30 for a permit application fee. Of the 124 properties on streets where reclaimed water service has been expanded south of Granada, only seven residents have applied for service to date. According to the staff report, residents have been reluctant to connect until their present irrigation system needs replacement. Staff wants to encourage connection with a temporary waiver of the connection fee. In the incentive program, residents will pay only the $30 application fee portion of the permit. This proposal also includes a refund to those properties that already connected to the reuse system following the Phase 1 expansion project. The funds lost by the connection fee will be made up by the $16 monthly service charge to properties that otherwise would not have connected, according to the report. QUALITY CONTROLLED

The reclaimed water is not potable, but has been treated to standards from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. According to Jessica Boyd, department spokeswoman, “the quality of the treated wastewater (effluent) is regulated through a facility’s wastewater permit requirements to ensure that the receiving water body is protected. Permit limits and treatment requirements are determined by the unique characteristics of the receiving water body. There should be minimal impacts on the environment.” She said Florida leads the nation in water reuse, as approximately 738 million gallons per day of reclaimed water were used for beneficial purposes in 2015.

‘Vaxxed’ bus stops at Love Whole Foods Locals gathered at the health food store to talk about vaccines. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

When Carson Smith was just 2 days old, he died in his mother’s arms. The doctors were able to revive him, and they told his mother that the near-tragedy was a result of complications during breastfeeding. Cassandra Smith, however, believed it was directly related to reactions to the routine vaccines he received after he was born. “Every time he got a vaccine, he had a reaction,” she said. “Like large, red spots at the injection site, a fever over 105 degrees or screaming all night long. I told the pediatrician that the shots were doing something to him, but they always said it was something else. Finally, I said, ‘Enough. I know my son.’” Cassandra Smith stopped vaccinating Carson, and when she had her youngest, Ashton, she chose not to vaccinate him either. After witnessing Carson’s reactions — she said he regressed at 15 months old, stopped hitting his milestones and didn’t talk again until he was 3 years old — she decided against the standard, medically recommended vaccinations.

Cassandra Smith vaccinated her elder son, Carson (left), but chose not to vaccinate her younger son, Ashton.

Smith was among a group of people who attended a seminar about vaccinations that was hosted Sept. 26 by Vaxxed and held at Love Whole Foods. Vaxxed is a bus that is currently on a national tour promoting the film, “Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe,” which alleges that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prevented the release of information linking vaccines to autism. The movie is controversial — enough so that it was pulled from the lineup of the Tribeca Film Festival, which had initially planned to screen it. Its director, British former gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield, was the lead researcher

in a 1998 study purporting to find a link between the measlesmumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism. Independent investigations into his research revealed multiple ethical violations — among them, that Wakefield had been paid by lawyers who planned to sue vaccine manufacturers — that were serious enough that Wakefield’s medical license was revoked for deliberate falsification of data, among other charges. Other researchers who’d had their names on the study withdrew their names, and the journal in which the study was published retracted the study. Wakefield’s colleagues in the medical field

repeatedly used the word “fraud” and “fraudulent” when describing his research to journalists. The film doesn’t address those issues with Wakefield’s research, though Wakefield repeatedly appears in it as an expert. It includes interviews with pharmaceutical insiders, doctors, politicians and parents of such as Cassandra Smith, who believe that vaccines harmed their children. According to the CDC’s website, the MMR vaccine side effects commonly include a sore arm from the shot, fever, mild rash and temporary pain and stiffness in the joints, mostly in teenage or adult women who did not already have immunity to the rubella component of the vaccine. The site does report that the MMR vaccine has been linked with a very small risk of febrile seizures (seizures or jerking caused by fever), but they are not associated with any long-term effects. It also states that some people may experience swelling in the cheeks or neck. The MMR vaccine rarely causes a temporary low platelet count, which can cause a bleeding disorder that usually goes away without treatment and is not life threatening. In an extremely rare case, a person may have a serious allergic reaction to MMR vaccine.

Fire destroys home in Ormond-by-the-Sea Grill. While they were eating, they noticed a big cloud of smoke coming from down the road. “We never dreamed it would be our house,” Barber said. “Our street looked like a war zone.” Debris covered the floor, the roof melted through the living room and the house that had almost felt like home was withered to ashes. PARADISE DESTROYED

Though officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, Barber said he feels pretty certain it started on the porch. Earlier that day, the couple had bought an electric cooler from a yard sale and plugged it in next to the grill. He believes it caught fire, and spread. In addition to losing their home

and most of their belongings, the couple also lost their pet shih tzu, Marco. They’d celebrated his fourth birthday just a week before. Their other dog, a dachshundcorgi mix named Willie, survived. “Our neighbors broke through our front door, and Willie came running out,” Barber said. “They tried, but the smoke was too dense for anyone to get in.” Some sentimental things survived the fire, including their wedding band, Ayers’ father’s military funeral flag and Barber’s baseball card collection, which he shares with his son. FINDING PARADISE IN THE AFTERMATH

NANCY BETCHER, Ormond Beach resident

Anyone who has ever had a lifethreatening allergic reaction to the antibiotic neomycin, or any other component of MMR vaccine, should not get the vaccine. The CDC says that getting the MMR vaccine is much safer than getting measles, mumps or rubella. But people such as Ormond Beach resident Nancy Betcher still want to get all the information they can to make their own decisions regarding vaccines. “I’m torn,” she said. “ I grew up in an age where smallpox and polio were still out there, and the shots for those were wonderful. I would be all for vaccinations if they didn’t have the toxic stuff. Those are doing more harm than good.” Cassandra Smith says that though she’s chosen not to vaccinate, she understands why people do. “I felt the same way they did,” she said. “I was in their shoes. They always say vaccine injuries are one in a million, and both of my sons were that one in a million. It’s just not a risk I’m willing to take.” Visit vaxxedthemovie.com. For more information on the CDC’s position on vaccine safety, visit cdc.gov/vaccinesafety. Jonathan Simmons contributed to this report.

said. “We’ve been overwhelmed with clothes, food, support — anything we need. All from people we don’t know.” Barber agreed. “We’ve had more names and numbers given to us than we know what to do with,” he said.

“We barely know anyone, and we’ve had this outpouring from strangers. Strangers that are now our friends. We’ve found our paradise. You couldn’t pry us off that little plot of land.” The couple plans to tear down what’s left of their old home, and build a new one. Despite the hardships they’ve endured these past few days, they don’t plan on leaving any time soon. Ayers puts it this way: “I didn’t drive 12,000 miles towing that little red truck down here to turn tail and run.” Realty Pros Assured agent Wayne Carter started a GoFundMe page to raise $5,000 to help the couple rebuild their lives. HIGHLIGHTS

A recent visitor to the city was the victim of a crime that occurs throughout Florida. But Stan Lomowski said the incident that happened during a weekend vacation will keep him from visiting the city again. Staying at a beachside hotel, he and his wife decided on Sept. 19 to walk their dog at Fortunato Park, something Lomowski did quite often when he lived in Ormond Beach five years CAR ago. BREAKS “It’s such a nice Police reported 257 area. Right by John car break-ins in the Anderson,” he said. first six months of They walked the year. their dog under the bridge and around Rockefeller Gardens, and then around the sidewalk at Fortunato. When they got back to their car, they found the driver and passenger windows were broken out, and two iPads stolen that were hidden under the seats. He said they took their iPads to the park, because they did not think they would be safe in the hotel room. He said the officers that arrived were “super nice” and were able to get fingerprints. He said he and his wife were “stressed out to the max,” over the event, especially driving back to Orlando with missing windows and two dogs in the car. “I’ll never go back to Ormond Beach,” he said. “I think it’s just

sad, very sad.” He suggested cameras in the park. “It’s Orwellian to think about, but it’s the world we live in,” he said. Police records show there have been four car break-ins at Fortunato Park so far this year, and two at Cassen Park. There have been three at The Casements. GANGS SUSPECTED

An Ormond Beach police officer patrolling Fortunato Park on Sept. 23 said he checks the parks several times a day, as well as business parking lots in the city. He walks around and looks in the cars, and if he sees a valuable in plain sight, he leaves a Crime Opportunity Report Form letting the owner know they are taking a risk. The officer said a group called the “felony lane” gang, which breaks into cars all along the East Coast, are suspected for many of the break-ins. Police believe the criminals sometimes wait and watch for targets in the parking areas. “Felony Lane” refers to the fact that the thieves use the lane in the bank drive-thru fartherest from the teller when using stolen IDs. City Manager Joyce Shanahan pointed out there are warning signs in the park to let people know of the danger. A sign on the driveway into the park says, “Take your keys. Secure valuables. Lock your car.”

Wayne Grant

A police officer checks to see if valuables are left visible in a car. If he sees any, he leaves a warning card for the owner.

UNLOCKED CARS: A PROBLEM

While the “felony lane” gang smashes windows, there are numerous car breaks where the thieves try doors until they find an unlocked car, according to Police Chief Jesse Godfrey. This happens particularly at night in neighborhoods. At a neighborhood meeting in June, Ormond Beach police told citizens that 257 car breaks had been reported in the city so far in the year, and the majority of cars were left unlocked. Godfrey said that he finds it particularly alarming that 21 handguns have been stolen from vehicles this year, and only two were forced break-ins. He said gun owners should be responsible in caring for their weapons.

I take back everything I ever said about dollar stores

ORMOND BEACH

Observer “If we are to build a better world, we must remember that the guiding principle is this — a policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy.”

All it took was a $4 bottle of my favorite wine and some super weird Halloween decorations to change me.

EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

So I know you guys have lives and stuff, but if you recall a column I wrote a month ago, I took a stand against the overwhelming number of dollar stores we have within our city limits. I ranted on for a few hundred words about how it’s too much, and we need more diversity in our retail market. While I still stand by some of that, I have since learned that dollar stores kind of rule — especially when adulting hits, and you have to give up your daily Starbucks lifestyle. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a little naive when it comes to money. Usually, when I’m shopping for groceries, I don’t think twice about what I’m throwing in my cart. My phi-

losophy tends to be: “I want it. I’m buying it.” But let me stop you mideye-roll there, friend, to let you know that I’m currently doing some super grown-up things that have changed that philosophy and turned me into a very frugal person. Like attempting-to-liveoff-$30-a-week kind of frugal. While I’m mostly saving money by mooching off my friends and making a large Hawaiian pizza last an entire week, I have been missing my one passionate love in life: shopping for useless things I don’t need. And also: having a fully stocked fridge. I thought it would be months before I could go on a “normal” shopping trip again — until my mom changed my life, per usual. She originally came over to help me get out my fall/ Halloween decorations, but we realized I only had, like, two pumpkin candle holders. Between that and noticing that my fridge was getting scary empty, she suggested we go out

and pick up a few things. My heart screamed Target, but my bank account whispered Dollar Tree. And while I thought I’d just get my basic necessities, I actually ended up finding some really awesome stuff for only 20 bucks: off-brand deodorant, blackberry wine, potato chips, two screaming baby masks for Halloween, a huge bouncy ball, a pumpkin-scented candle, and a big pack of

Slim Jims. It was nothing short of insane. So I’m sorry Dollar Tree, Dollar General and whatever other dollar stores may exist in my zip code. I misjudged you by your sometimes-sketchy exterior, and failed to get to know all the strange and wonderful products you provide on the inside. Now who wants to buy me a pizza?

WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

Motorists may have noticed the knee-high grass in front of the new CVS Pharmacy at the corner of West Granada Boulevard and North Nova Road last week. It has now been mowed and neatly trimmed. City Manager Joyce Shanahan said the corporate headquarters for CVS Pharmacy apparently did not realize they needed to make arrangements for lawn maintenance at the store. The city Neighborhood Improvement Division contacted the store headquarters and let them know about the need for lawn service.

City approves Cypress Trails The City Commission approved a zoning map amendment Sept. 20 that allows a development called Cypress Trails, with 48 single family lots, to move forward. The zone change, from suburban residential to planned residential development, was necessary because the lots are less than one acre in size. The PRD process requires that the land have adequate water holding capacity, buffers, natural space, etc. The land is located on the east side of Clyde Morris Boulevard south of Hand Avenue. At the Planning Board meeting where the zoning change was recommended, residents of nearby Aberdeen community said a traffic light is needed at their exit, and even more now with coming development. However, Clyde Morris in under Volusia County jurisdiction for traffic control. After the vote to approve the zoning change, Mayor Ed Kelley told city staff that the city should recommend the county examine the need for a traffic light at the location. A second vote on the ordinance will be required.

He began corresponding by email with the suspect. The victim did a Western Union transfer for $790. for a puppy. SPORTS Baddest band in the land

Girls on Pride

I’ve yet to hear another band compete with Mainland’s halftime and in-game performances.

Pride football isn’t just for boys ... Meet two girl players and a woman coach.

ootbal is a game known for its physicality, brutality and all the other vicious adjectives. It’s always been considered the ultimate men’s game — from the players on the field to the coaches on the sidelines. But at the Ormond Beach Pride, there are two girl players and a woman coach who didn’t get the memo, and the head coach couldn’t be happier about it. Meadow Penney (10U) plays running back and defensive end.

Nitosha Bell

Tabitha Martin (12U) plays wide receiver, and Nitosha Bell coaches the 6U team. MORE THAN A FOOTBALL MOM

Bell first joined the Pride organization as a team mom six years ago, when her twins first played. She has been asked to coach in previous seasons but declined. This year, she finally accepted and is enjoying her position so much, she wants to continue and hopefully reach the high school level. “I just want to be able to encourage the boys to learn and know the importance of the game,” she said. Bell says she has only received positive and encouraging words for her position, and she hopes more women will continue to fill the sidelines on all football levels. PENNEY FOR HER TALENTS

Meadow loves football. What’s more surprising is that she loves the physicality that comes with it, and it shows.Meadow received an ovation when she sacked the quarterback this past week. When she gets in the game, she looks to make a play.

A TOMBOY FROM THE BEGINNING, LIKE MOM

“When I was little,” Tabitha said, “I didn’t like makeup, so I was pushed to do more boy things. I was always around boys, and they taught me how to play football.” Earlier in the season, Tabitha felt like her teammates treated her lightly because she was a girl. While at her birthday party, she requested that Glenn Hill — 6-foot-3 and 305 pounds — hit her the same way he hits the rest of the guys. “And he did — twice,” said Heather Mottern, Tabitha’s mother. “But she got right back up.” Tabitha plans to try out for the Mainland Buccaneers next year as a freshman. BRIAN COLUBIALE ON THE THREE LADIES

“I love it. Football is coaches and players playing a game. Boys and girls, big and small, black and white — it doesn’t matter. When that ball is snapped, they are all a team, playing together and having fun.”

ICYMI: PRIDE NEARLY SWEEPS FLAGLER WARRIORS

t is the one band I’ve seen capture the undivided attention of opposing supporters and band members during the game and halftime. And at halftime, this band causes fans to postpone their trips to the concession stands and restrooms to hear and see the latest music and moves. This music machine is the Mainland band. I’ve taken in many high school football games, but, when I covered the Bucs for the first time two years ago, this band made me do something I’ve never done before or since — except for Mainland. While the Bucs — the best football team in the area — were playing exceptionally well on the field, the band had hijacked my attention off the field. I had never seen anything like it on the prep level. I knew every song — current or classic — and the members of the band had movements for every key. So what does the band do to separate itself from the others? The band practices twice as much as most other high school bands. And, according to band director Johnny Mims, it’s all worth it, when he and the band see how the players react to the music. “They thrive off our music,” he said. “It’s very important that we’re on point and doing what we need to do, so we can help our team win.” The band is composed of the musical instruments, the color guard, the Lady Bucs, the flag girls and the majorettes. They all play their part to make the Mainland game an entertaining performance — on and off the field. When it comes to his band, Mims held no punches when he said this: “You’re not going to find a high school band as good as we are. We work very, very hard. We sound good and look good – all the time.” If you’ve never experienced this band, treat yourself to an event this season.”

The Ormond Pride won all but a game this past week against the Flagler Warriors. The scores were as follows: Pride won 14U 40-6, 12U 3412, 10U (Warriors) 18-13, 8U 19-14, 6U 18-13. Photo by Jeff Dawsey

JEFF’S GAME PICKS

upset Mainland, but the Bucs did to them what they do to all the other teams last week. They put up 40 points and dare their opponents to keep up against their defense – and it never happens. This game should be a cake walk for Mainland.

Flagler Palm Coast (1-3) vs. Sandalwood

Cyrus Fagan and Brian Jenkins celebrate after Jenkins returned a punt to the one-yard line against Apopka.

WHO WILL WIN ON FRIDAY?

Seabreeze (0-4) at Pine Ridge

Hey there, football fans. This year, I’ll be making predictions, just for fun. Do you agree with my winners and the scores? Share your thoughts on Twitter @PCOsports.

Pine Ridge wins 27-3. Every week it’s the same story: Seabreeze has no offense. The Sandcrabs failed to score a point again, this past week, which decreases the offensive scoring to a little over a point per contest. Pine Ridge has only won a game, but the Panthers can actually score. While they struggle on defense, Pine Ridge will score enough to beat Seabreeze.

Matanzas (4-0) at New Smyrna

Matanzas wins 31-3. The Pirates have become the team that other teams hate to play. Other than last year at Mainland, Matanzas has stifled every team it’s played in the last two seasons, and its offense has actually gotten better. If New Smyrna’s 47-3 loss to FPC is indication of how this game might go, the Pirates are going to run through the Barracudas.

Mainland (5-0) vs. Deltona Mainland wins 47-10. The Bucs have played a number of state-ranked opponents, and they continue to show why there are ranked in the upper echelon of all classes. Some journalists picked Apopka to

Sandalwood wins 33-13. The Bulldogs play one of the most difficult schedules in Florida football. Their very best is demanded of them weekly, but they’re not able to compete with most of their opponents. While they played an exceptional game against New Smyrna, FPC will host undefeated Sandalwood this week. Other than their 17-14 win over Spruce Creek, the Saints have scored at least 35 points in all of their games while holding all of their opponents to 14 or lower.

Father Lopez (1-3) at Trinity Prep Lopez wins 31-21. The Green Wave hasn’t been able to stop anyone this season. The defense allowed 35 points in Lopez’s only win. And the offense has struggled at times, but, as it showed in its previous game against John Carroll Catholic, it can score. Down 24-0 early in the game, the Green Wave put up 19 straight points – and then went scoreless for the rest of the game. Both teams have struggled to stop other teams, but Lopez will score enough in the end to get the win.

Going to finals in a golf tournament are Pat Larsen, Suzette Sweeny, Melody Kimmel, Jeanie Schreiber, Katy Nelson, Lea Buckley, Mimi Lenio and Jackie Poole.

Several members of the Daytona Beach chapter of the Executive Women’s Golf Association will be going to the EWGA Cup finals in Rancho Mirage, California, on Nov. 11 and 12. The women are members of a team called the 19th Hole Champs and they placed high enough in 18 holes of four-ball and 18 holes of singles on Sept. 10 and 11 in the Southern Qualifier at LPGA International to advance to the finals at Westin Mission Hills Resort. The chapter was started in Ormond Beach 10 years ago. They play at Halifax Plantation and Riverbend, in Ormond Beach, and other courses. “We are women with a passion for golf who come together for fitness, fun, friendship and professional networking,” said spokeswoman Connie Karby in

A walk to remember Ormond family honors mom during Walk to End Alzheimer’s event JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

H

undreds of Flagler County residents assembled for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s two-mile walk on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Veterans Park, in Flagler Beach. As the pre-walk ceremony took place, tears flooded the gathering, and many family members, friends and caregivers mourned the loss of their loved ones. Those in attendance shared stories, while others discussed the difficulty of watching family members regress in their later years due to the disease. Kathy’s Butterflies made its presence known by handing out purple wristbands with pink butterflies and the name Kathy Hamilton with her 1951-2016 lifespan written on. She was the mother of Ormond Beach residents Jessica and Sam Snowden; Hamilton lost her battle with Alzheimer’s on June 11. “We took care of her for the last two years of her life, and it was rough seeing a registered nurse turn into a 5-year-old,” Jessica

Kathy Hamilton 1951-2016

said. “Watching her lose her memory was very hard. We had to pay the bills and help her take a shower. They (Alzheimer’s victims) lose the steps of taking a shower.” When asked what she would remember most about her mother, Sam said, “Just life in general. She gave and did everything for her children.” This year the Alzheimer’s Association Central and North Florida Chapter is seeking to raise over $80,000 in Flagler County for community programs and research in and around the area to help families and their loved ones manage through the illness, and it has currently raised $53,730. Kathy’s Butterflies is ranked as the third-highest fundraiser group for this chapter.

ALZHEIMER’S FACTS

Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., and it is the only one in the Top 10 that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed. There are more than 15.9 million caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias in the country. In 2015, these caregivers provided an estimated 18.1 billion hours of unpaid care valued at $221.3 billion.

E L P P A E N I P F O E V O L E H T FOR Locals got crafty decorating pineapples for Ormond Restaurant Week.

f you thought pineapples were just for snacking and sticking on the side of your fruity drink, think again. Locals used fake mustaches, onion rings and their imaginations to create a one-of-a-kind pineapple for the finale of Ormond Resturant Week. The weeklong event featured fixed price menus from 11 different local resturants. The Mr. Pineapple Head Contest was held Sept. 25 at Grind Gastropub and Kona Tiki Bar. — EMILY BLACKWOOD

Evolution Health Club changes locations Evolution Health Club will move to 495 S. Nova Road at the end of October. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

The two-story building at 1 S. Kings Road has had a lot of names over the years: Omega 40, Club Boom, Varsity Athletic Club, Elite World Class Fitness Center and finally, Evolution Health Club. And Pat Fanning has been there through them all. He started out as just a member of Omega 40, a popular racketball club in the 1980s that at one time had as many as 3,000 members. It was there that Fanning shared memories, birthdays and bonded over beer with fellow members. It was a community first and a fitness club second. “There are so many people in this town who met their husbands and wives here in the ’80s,” he said. “And so many kids grew up here playing racquetball.” It was nostalgia of the building that motivated Fanning to take over the business with many names and give it one more: Evolution Health Club. Fanning has been running the show with his son, Ryan Fanning, and the other managing owner, Josh Bevilacqua, for two years. While Fanning really loves the building he spent so much of his life in, at the end of October the club is moving to 495 S. Nova Road, Suite 113.

The Evolution Health Club building has housed excercise businesses since the 1980s.

“We’re going to focus on our personal training and group fitness, like the boxing bootcamps,” Fanning said. “We’ve got new equipment coming that we haven’t had before, like stairclimbers.” At the end of the October, the health club will be in the new building, and Fanning hopes current and future clients will make the move with them. “The fitness world is constantly evolving, and that’s what we do,” he said. “It’s the life we love and live.” Visit evolutionhealthclubormond.com for more information.

The volleyball court was always full, and hot air balloons even made appearances at Omega 40.

Rabbi Dr. Bruce Tucker is inviting the public to attend Beth Judah’s Erev Rosh Hashana Oct. 2.

Rosh Hashana is on God’s calendar — is it on yours? EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR

Members of the congregation at Beth Judah have a very important meeting coming up: a one-on-one with God. Starting Oct. 3 on Rosh Hashana — or the beginning of the Jewish New Year — they will spend 10 days checking in with God and seeing what he has in store for their lives and the world. During this time, people of the Jewish faith take into account how much they are loving, forgiving and praying. “God likes to keep a calendar,” said Rabbi Dr. Bruce Tucker. “And he lets us in on it. This is the time when we prepare for God to speak to us in a special way. Everything is about listening in Judaism. It’s the spiritual experience of listening to God.” This period starts with the Jewish New Year and ends with Yom Kippur, or The Day of Atonement. This is when God forgives his people for anything and everything, according to Rabbi Tucker. “There are a lot of traditional, very moving prayers that touch the soul,” he said. “Prayers that have been prayed for thousands of years. We want people to begin to find the deepest part of their inner being and find strength in that.” For more info on the synagogue visit bethjudahmessianic.com.

PUBLICATION DAY Two books were recently published by Ormond Beach authors. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

CANDO DISSOLVED Jeff Boyle was involved in the successful effort to limit the heights of buildings in Ormond Beach to 75 feet. Citizens voted in favor of the referendum in 2006. The effort was the beginning of the CANDO citizen’s organization, which was dissolved in January, “10 years to the day after it was formed,” Boyle said. Citizens and Neighbors Devoted to Ormond Beach had not been active, and Boyle said there were only a few members when it disbanded.

Two Ormond Beach authors have been successful at getting their latest books published, and they can be found at local book signings. Jeff Boyle, city commissioner from January 1996 to December 2005, has turned his attention to writing full-time and recently published “Hidden Truths,” a collection of 16 short stories. Boyle was also the owner of Baseball Card Exchange on West Granada Boulevard, from 1989 until 2010, in the building now occupied by The Pocket Jeweler. “Hidden Truths” follows Boyle’s first book, a novel called “Nam World,” which won third place in the Florida Writers Association in 2012 in the mainstream literary category. It was about a Vietnam veteran in Daytona Beach, with elements of government and the seductive power of business and money, Boyle said. While many writers search for publishers, Boyle was contacted by Bold Venture Press, who asked to see samples of his work. As a result, the South Florida company has published “Hidden Truths,” now available at boldventurepress.com, Amazon, barnesandnoble.com and walmart.com. It will soon be on Kindle and Smashwords. Boyle has book signings coming up: Oct. 19, Florida Authors at Daytona State College; Nov. 10: Port Orange Authors Bamfest; and Feb. 16: New Smyrna Beach Library, a one-man presentation. He plans to attend the Florida Writers Association Royal Palm Awards dinner on Oct. 22 to see if two of his stories win awards. In “Hidden Truths,” his characters come to realizations about themselves and life, he said. The publisher notes state, “The tales are sprinkled with humor, compassion and an eye for detail of the surroundings.” Boyle said his writing has been helped a lot by a local group, City

Island Fiction Writers. He spends a few hours every day writing, he said, usually in the morning or evening, and about 50% of his time is spent editing. “I’ll go to bed thinking something is really solid, and look at in the morning and make 30 changes,” he said. “I don’t know how people did it before computers.” ‘FOR THOSE I LOVE’

Kathy Stickney, of Ormond Beach, has been a genealogy researcher for 18 years and has recently published “For Those I Love,” which relates the true experiences of her ancestors in the Civil War. A member of Halifax Genealogical Society, which meets at Ormond Beach Regional Library, she’s been a genealogical speaker and published several articles. On Sept. 24, she had a book signing at Biggby Coffee, 1345, W. Granada Blvd. The publisher notes for her book state, “It features the story of brothers, cousins and townsmen who fight together in the Civil War and face the anguish of seeing loved ones wounded or killed. Only their faith in God and love for their families back home can sustain them and enable them to keep fighting.” This is her second book. Her first book was self-published but this one was published by Kate Bloom Publishing LLC in Oklahoma. Stickney said she sought a publisher that would be a good fit for her book and submitted the manuscript. “I looked at their statement of purpose,” she said. She spent nine years researching the experiences of her ancestors in the war. Everything is factual, except she had to make up conversations and imagine some of the emotions. Written as a novel, it follows their battles from enlistment to Appomattox. “I wanted it to be factual,” she said. Her ancestors are from Alabama and her father moved to

Ormond Beach residents will soon be saying yes to the dress at the new bridal boutique on West Granada Boulevard. Opening Oct. 3, Blush Bridal Gallery features designers such as Watters, Allure and Maggie Sottero Designs. The Ormond Beach Observer recently sat down with the owner, Kim Yampaglia, to discuss her hopes for the store.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO OPEN A BRIDAL SHOP?

“Bridal fashion has been a lifelong passion of mine. I studied business in college with hopes to one day be a bridal boutique owner. My goal was to open an elegant bridal salon that sells designer gowns at affordable prices. Our bridal collections are fresh, modern, and chic. Blush Bridal Gallery is proud to bring an exquisite range of trendy and unique bridal gowns to the Ormond Beach area.” WHY ORMOND BEACH?

South Florida when she was a child. Writing the book was an eye-opening experience. “I had no idea … the hardships they faced,” she said. For example, if a soldier was wounded, he was expected to return to the battlefield as soon as he recovered. The book also delves into the reason why many fought in the war, saying most soldiers were poor farmers who did not own

“I was born and raised in the Volusia County area and recognized the need for an elegant and chic bridal boutique. Blush Bridal Gallery will be a great addition to the bustling and vibrant shopping district of Ormond Beach. We are thrilled to be located in the charming, downtown shopping area and could not be more proud to be a part of the Ormond Beach community!” Visit blushbridalgallery.com for more information.

slaves. She said she writes when she feels creative, and doesn’t force herself. “I sit down to write and sometimes it just flows,” she said. Stickney is a member of the Florida State Genealogical Society, Alabama Genealogical Society, Henry County (Alabama) Historical Group and United Daughters of the Confederacy.
