YOUR TOWN END OF AN ERA
A City Commission that has been unchanged for six years had its final meeting together Nov. 1. Mayor Ed Kelley is running for Volusia County chair and will be replaced by Mayor-Elect Bill Partington. Commissioner James Stowers is not running for re-election. Kelley was given a large replica of the city’s official watch. Regular meetinggoers shared a laugh, because when Kelley presented Ormond Beach watches to others through the years, he would joke that he didn’t have one. Stowers, who has been a commissioner for six years, thanked his wife, Andraea, for being a sounding board, saying they would have a second “commission meeting” after every meeting at home. Commissioner Rick Boehm said he has known a lot of leaders, but never saw one do a better job than Kelley. “When he disagrees with you, he does it with a smile,” he said.

Joe Wolfe, who used his experience to help prisoners in a ministry called Spirit Light Outreach, has died. Friends report that he was found “peacefully sitting in his rocking chair” on the morning of Oct. 27. Wolfe, 66, was featured in the Oct. 27 edition of the Observer. Wolfe‘s early life included a prison sentence for robbery, but he later became a minister with Pathways of Light. He had been helping prisoners through his own ministry, Spirit Light Outreach, for several years. He had planned an event to benefit prisoners called “Love is the Only Answer,” and it is still set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, at Unitarian Universalist Church, 56 Halifax Ave. Friends called police after finding the body and it was taken by the medical examiner to determine the cause of death. A spokesman for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said the cause appeared to be medical. Wolfe had been treated recently at a hospital for chest pains and shortage of breath, the incident report stated. Wolfe was from Chicago, and his family will make arrangements for services there.

Ormond Beach police are seeking a man who has exposed himself to females on the beachside on three separate occasions since August, according to Officer Keith Walker, spokesman. Police are asking witnesses to call 911 immediately so officers can respond before he leaves the area. Witnesses are cautioned to not approach the suspect. The females were either jogging or walking their dog between 5 and 5:30 a.m. when they saw a white male exposing himself to them. The suspect is described as 5 feet, 9 inches to 6 feet tall and weighing between 150 and 175 pounds. He has dark, chinlength, wavy hair, according to the witnesses. In one incident report, a female was jogging eastbound on Neptune Avenue as a man in a long gray shirt was walking toward her. As they got closer, he pulled up the shirt, exposing his pri-
vate area. The witness ran faster toward Ocean Shore Boulevard. In another report, a woman was walking her dog on Neptune Avenue, and when she looked south down Oak Avenue she saw a naked man. She started running and noticed that the suspect ran to some bushes. In the third incident report, two women were jogging on Riverside Drive when a man came running from a side street wearing only sneakers. He then ran to a car and took off. They did not get a good look at the car but it appeared to be a compact. They said they wanted to pursue charges, because they had seen him exposing himself before. ONE MAN’S TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN’S TIKI HUT Storm debris has been a big problem, but Dave Dalecki, of Ormond-by-the-Sea, found a way to remove some items that had washed onto the beach and “repurpose” them. Helped by his son, Dalton, Dalecki built a Hurricane Matthew Tiki Bar with various sizes of boards, rope and stainless steel bolts that he found on the beach. Dalecki’s wife, Cindy, said he spent about six hours searching after high tides and worked on it part-time for about a week and a half. The Dalecki family had tiki hut-warming party with neighbors and family. Dalecki still wants to finish the roof, add benches and stain the surface. “He’s glad to help keep these items from the landfill and maybe even save the county some tax dollars,” said Cindy Dalecki. — WAYNE GRANT
rmond Beach residents keep calling the city, asking when debris from Hurricane Matthew will be picked up on their street. The city’s response: Please be patient. “The city is making headway, and we ask that you be patient, knowing we are committed to getting the job done as quickly and as safely as possible,” said a city spokeswoman. The crews have been working in the heavily “vegetated” areas, and were approximately halfway done on Oct. 31, according to the city. The first pass through the city is expected to be complete by Nov. 10. More passes will be conducted as needed.

The cost so far has been $1,661,467 for debris removal, $698,519 for grinding, $5,735 for leaning trees and $375,795 for hanging limbs. FEMA is expected to pay 85%. According to the city’s engi-

He mentioned ECN, which is now expanding into the third floor of their building on West Granada Boulevard; Skyo Industries, which hired 20 employees and moved into a vacant 20,000-squarefoot building in the Airport Business Park; Prime Global Group, which relocated from New Jersey and plans to add 38 jobs in three years; Ameritech Die and Mold South, which has modernized a building at the business park; S.R. Perrott, which broke ground on a new office facility; and Super Petrel, a Brazilian lightaircraft manufacturer, which opened a facility at the airport for airplane assembly and sales.

City officials, business people and community leaders gathered at Oceanside Country Club on Oct. 25 for the State of the City Luncheon, a joint production by the Chamber of Commerce and city of Ormond Beach. The theme was “Ormond Beach, the investment of a lifetime.” A video montage showed the mayor and city commissioners describing the highlights of the past year. Mayor Ed Kelley pointed out that one of the founding fathers was John D. Rockefeller, a businessman who influenced others, including Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and Sir Malcolm Campbell, to visit the city. “They shaped our city’s landscape,” he said. Pointing out highlights of the year, Kelley mentioned the Strategic Planning Workshop where citizens and business people came up with ways to encourage economic growth in the city. because he did not seek re-election, praised the private-public partnership that resulted in the landscaping of North U.S. 1 from Interstate 95 to Airport Road. “A group of citizens and business people had countless meetings,” he said. The group raised $20,000 in private money and received donations of $20,000 each from Ormond Beach and Volusia County. This encouraged FDOT to provide a grant of $750,000. Commissioner Troy Kent mentioned two current projects, a parking lot in the New Britain area that will help residents visit the area and the addition of reclaimed water for irrigation on the beachside south of Granada Boulevard. Using reclaimed water from the city means that the homeowners will not need to water their lawns with a well, thereby conserving water in the aquifer. Also, less reclaimed water will be discharged into surface water. Commissioner Rick Boehm said that, as a Vietnam veteran, he was gratified to see about 100 Vietnam veterans honored by the city in a ceremony at the Performing Arts Center. He also mentioned the new software installed at the Planning Department to ease the approval of development plans. With the new software, devel-

BILL PARTINGTON, on the Environmental Discovery Center
Commissioner and Mayor-Elect Bill Partington said a major development was the Environmental Discovery Center in Central Park. He said it was the result of volunteers, advisory boards and City Commission members working tirelessly for years. “It’s an example of what can be accomplished when we work together,” he said. “This year, it hosted Enviro Camp, where campers can be hands-on with the environment and learn the importance of preservation.” A Volusia County ECHO grant provided half of the $800,000 cost. Another success has been the Community Garden on Hammock Lane. A second garden is
being planned to open next spring on Fleming Avenue, and Partington said there are already 25 people on a waiting list. Other new items in 2016 included the installation of welcome signs and a city initiative called Ormond Beach 2 Go, where city staff visit neighborhoods and has a remote City Hall for a day. In conclusion, Kelley said he was proud to be part of the expansion of the retail base, business park and economic development projects.

Harold Briley receives big support from Observer readers ORMOND BEACH CITY COMMISSIONER, ZONE 4
unsurpassed. This choice is the easiest on the ballot. TODD MOWL Ormond Beach
Briley will benefit all zones of Ormond Beach
Harold Briley
Harold Briley will make our city better Dear Editor: I have been blessed to live in such a great city as Ormond Beach for 41 years, and, like most that live here, I try to do what I can to make it better. Years ago I worked for the recreation department with Frank Henry, helping kids with sports. I think all of us do what we can to make our city better, but then there are people who make it a big part of their life to do more than the average citizen. One of those we are lucky to have running for Zone 4 city commissioner, Harold Briley. I have know Harold for years, and he has always been giving of his time to serve this city in a variety of positions. He has been on the Planning Board for 16 years, as well as serving as past president of Ormond Mainstreet. These are just a couple of the ways he has worked through the years to make our area a better place to live. I hope the citizens of Ormond Beach give him a chance to work further for our city by electing him to the City Commission next Tuesday. I know we all will be rewarded to have his knowledge and experience representing us on a daily basis to continue making our city great. RAY STEPHENS Ormond Beach
Recommendation for Briley is right on Dear Editor: In this election season, where so many of us are saying, “Is the best we can do?”, it feels good to know that we have the best choice possible with Harold Briley. Harold is a honest, hardworking, smart candidate who understands the needs of small businesses, the importance of low taxes and the voters’ desire to keep the standard of living high in this beautiful city of Ormond Beach. I have talked with him, and I am confident he also understands how important it is for us to never let this city become like so many neighboring cities, where crime and homeless vagrants have destroyed businesses and communities. His knowledge of the city through his service on city boards and his living in this community for 44 years is
Dear Editor: Although I am not a currently a resident of Zone 4, my wife Sally and I have lived in Ormond since 1973. It has been my pleasure and honor to serve with Harold Briley for many years as a member of the Ormond Beach Planning Board. He has served as both chairman and vice chairman and enjoys the respect of his fellow board members. Mr. Briley has dedicated his adult life serving the city of Ormond Beach and our residents through various boards and committees, and, because of his love and dedication for Ormond Beach, he deserves our support in his bid to serve our great city as the Zone 4 city commissioner. I sincerely hope that the voters of Zone 4 will elect Harold Briley to the City Commission so the residents of zones 1, 2 and 3 can benefit from Harold’s vast experience as a volunteer for, and his immense knowledge of, the city of Ormond Beach. DOUG THOMAS SR. Ormond Beach
Briley’s ‘values and talent’ make him the right choice Dear Editor: Please consider your vote for Harold Briley as Ormond Beach city commissioner. Harold is a first-class individual with the passion and knowledge to lead the citizens of Ormond Beach. Ormond has always been one of the special cities in Florida, so I ask you to make sure we entrust our city’s leadership with a person of Harold Briley’s values and talent. PAT O’MALLEY Ormond Beach
pragmatic approach to issues, combined with his experience and proven leadership makes him the best choice for the Zone 4 seat. JANET DANNEHOWER Ormond Beach
Briley serves the community Dear Editor: Harold Briley has been an asset to the city of Ormond Beach for many years. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing him since we were students at Seabreeze High School. Since then, he has gone on to serve in countless positions with the city of Ormond Beach, including Planning Board and Development Review Board. He has been active with the Chamber of Commerce and Ormond Mainstreet. Truly, his dedication to the city has earned him my recommendation for City Commission. JOHN J. ADAMS Ormond Beach
Vote for Harold Briley in Zone 4 Dear Editor: I am writing regarding Harold Briley, a life-long resident of Ormond Beach, who is running for City Commission Zone 4. Harold has served this community for the past 16 years as a Planning Board member and Ormond Mainstreet, and is the chairman of the East Volusia Community Traffic Safety Team. I have known Harold for over 20 years through the Daytona Beach Street Rod Club. I have worked with Harold at Adams, Cameron & Co. Realtors for over three years. Harold’s heart and soul is in this community and the betterment of our citizens. MARGE ALLISON Ormond Beach
ORMOND BEACH CITY COMMISSIONER, ZONE 1
Briley is a man of integrity Dear Editor: It is with great confidence that I recommend Harold Briley for the City Commission Zone 4 seat in Ormond Beach. Over the last 16 years, Harold has tirelessly served in leadership positions on the Ormond Beach Planning Board, Development Review Board and Ormond MainStreet, as well as many other committees. Through this work, Harold has demonstrated his tireless commitment to Ormond Beach. Additionally, having worked with Harold professionally for several years, I have witnessed his integrity in all aspects of his business and the respect he garners from his peers. I believe that Harold’s honest,
Dwight Selby
Dwight Selby is the right choice for Zone 1 Dear Editor: I’m writing to express my support for Dwight Selby, candidate for Ormond Beach City Commission Zone 1. I’ve personally known and worked with Dwight for almost 20 years. Dwight has always impressed me by his sound judgment and fair approach
while making decisions. His commitment for our community has been consistent for many years, always caring about Ormond Beach and its direction for the future. Dwight will help lead our city down the path of fiscal responsibility and positive growth. LEWIS M. HEASTER Ormond Beach
AMENDMENT 1 Vote no on medical marijuana Dear Editor Vote no on the medical marijuana ballot initiative of 2016. It is best and wisest never to promote anything that is harmful to the human physiology and health, especially that which distorts reality. It is a fact that medical marijuana is already available to patients suffering from cancer, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease, through a law known as the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act of 2014, signed by Gov. Rick Scott on June 16, 2014. The law provides for physician prescription control of marijuana, to be administered via oil form or vaporizer, and distributed through hospitals. The smoking form of marijuana is prohibited, due to the presence of carcinogens found in all smoke. Moreover, there is now compelling evidence on the growing risk of marijuana smoking’s associated adverse cardiovascular effects, especially in young people. It is also found that cannabis mutates DNA. Don’t be naïve. There are clever, fat cats involved in the 2016 ballot initiative. The purpose of this broadly written initiative is to promote the recreational use of cannabis, big time. Do the citizens of Florida want their communities saturated with “pot shops”? Do our communities want to promote the unhealthy habits of smoking and all the suffering and costly problems that will surely follow? Certainly not. Marijuana is classified as a hallucinogenic. The shortterm effects of marijuana smoking include impaired coordination; difficulty with thinking, concentration and problem solving; shortened attention span; decreased alertness; impaired learning and memory; and euphoria. Addiction may also occur. Marijuana use is considered a gateway to hard chemicals and drugs. Moreover, there are forces in our society that know it is much easier to motivate and govern when the citizenconsumers are overwhelmed with impaired judgment and euphoria. Please vote no on the medical marijuana ballot initiative. CHARLES R. HEEHLER Port Orange

This past week, I did something a little unlike me. And by “unlike me,” I mean something actually responsible and mature. I bought a house. A cute two-bed, two-bath little bungalow (I don’t know if it’s really classified as a bungalow; I just really like that word) with a big backyard, a sun room, and a dark blue front door. Sure, it’s got some weird quirks, like a homemade garage bathroom where the light switch is only accessible by reaching your hand through a hole in the wall — but it’s home. And I couldn’t be happier that it’s all over. The experience itself was nothing short of exhausting. For the past six months, I’ve been knee-deep in real
estate and not much else. My car was cluttered with house fact sheets. My calendar was filled with showing appointments. The only texts I got past 10 p.m. were from my Realtor/ partner-in-crime Brenda Benz of RE/MAX. What I really wasn’t prepared for — and I wasn’t prepared for much — was the emotional toll the process would take on me. I fell in love and got my heart broken at least three times thanks to termites and bad roofs. There were points I considered settling for something outside the Ormond Beach city limits just because finding a house with everything on my checklist seemed pretty impossible. I’m not gonna lie to you, guys: I cried a lot. But then one day, Brenda called me and told me she had found a nice little property, and I needed to get over there ASAP. Because that’s the other super-fun thing about buying a house: You’re forced to make a huge life decision in about an hour. When I first walked through the doors of my future home, I didn’t feel what I would

expect to feel. In a weird way, I had put up a little guard over my heart not to get too excited about anything because I had been let down so much. In fact, I didn’t let myself think anything was going to happen until I signed the papers and the keys were in my hands. It was then that it all felt real — and I cried again. Because while yes, I’m a slightly selfish person who has no trouble splurging on lattes, I never thought in a million years that I’d be able to do this.

Let’s be real, I don’t work in the most lucrative field, and I kind of always thought I’d rent until I got married and someone else could take care of it. But thanks to the encouragement of my parents and my friends, I realized I didn’t want to wait for someone to take care of me. I wanted to do it myself. Well for myself, and for my pets. But mostly for me.

Two Ormond Beach Police officers stopped by Ormond Beach Middle School on Oct. 27 to attend the Parent Teacher Student Association’s annual Halloween Dance. The event was held in the school cafeteria.
Schools set makeup days Volusia County Schools received approval from the Florida Department of Education for its plan to make up five hurricane days, according to spokeswoman Nancy Wait. Three days will be made up by reverting five early release days to regular days. Those days will be Nov. 9, 16 and 30 and Dec. 7 and 14. For the two remaining days, one day was made up on Oct. 21, and the final day will be made up on Monday, Feb. 20. Four of the makeup days were caused by Hurricane Matthew and one by Hurricane Hermine. State law allows lost time to be made up by hours/minutes instead of full days. Students are required to have a minimum of 900 hours of instructional time.
Man who robbed Ormond Walmart gets arrested Nicholas Dinovo was arrested by officers from the Daytona Beach Police Department on Oct. 29 for an armed robbery and carjacking that happened about 9:30 a.m. Oct. 27 at the Ormond Beach Walmart. On. Oct. 27, Officers were notified that a suspect had pointed a handgun at a customer service clerk and demanded money from her register. After receiving the money, the suspect exited the store and confronted a woman at her car. The suspect pointed the handgun at her and demanded the keys to her vehicle. The suspect then fled the parking lot in the woman’s vehicle. Though shaken up, neither woman suffered injuries during the incident. During the investigation, an empty BB gun box and packaging were found discarded in the electronics department. This BB gun matched the description of the firearm used by the suspect. However, it is unknown if the suspect had a real handgun also. The suspect was later identified as Nicholas Dinovo. He was considered to be armed and dangerous. He was involved in
a shooting with Citrus County Police in 2004. The woman’s vehicle he fled in was described as a 2013 dark gray Ford Fiesta, five-door hatchback, bearing Florida Tag 4530JJ, with a Daytona State College and princess sticker in the rear window. It was later recovered in the parking lot of Florida Hospital.

Granada Boulevard Shoplifting. A female bought a soda and a pack of cigarettes at a gas station. She then said she needed more money and tried the ATM in the store but it declined her request for cash. She asked the clerk for $80 worth of lottery tickets and two more packs of cigarettes and said she would go to her car to get the cash. After the clerk put the items on the counter, she turned her back for a second and the suspect picked up the items and walked out. The clerk ran outside, and the suspect fled with a companion in a car that did not have a license plate.
DIAPER DASH 2:24 p.m. — 1500 Block of West Granada Boulevard Petit Theft. The suspect removed two Game Station remote controllers out of original packaging in a department store and placed them in a diaper bag. He was stopped as he was pushing a cart with the diaper bag out of the store. He said he wasn’t sure why he committed the theft but said it was a stupid decision. The victim said he remembered the suspect from a previous incident when he placed remote controllers in his pants. EARLY DUI 8:01 a.m. — 100 Block of East Granada Boulevard DUI Alcohol. An officer was notified that a reckless driver was driving south on John Anderson Drive. He found the car at the intersection with East Granada Boulevard, stopped well past the stop bar. After leaving the light, the car was weaving in its lane. After stopping the car, the officer noticed that the driver was disheveled. His shirt was on backward. He provided an invoice from a repair shop and said it was his insurance information. There was an odor of alcohol on the suspect and he said he had two or three beers the night before at a party. The suspect was arrested after failing a field sobriety test.

NOT IMPRESSED 9:58 p.m. —1000 Block of North U.S. 1 Petit Theft. The suspect in a shoplifting incident at a convenience store said she was driven to the location by a male, and she stole the bottle of wine to impress him. She told the officer that she would now pay for it. The clerk at the store said the couple came in and the suspect went to the back to look for the bathroom while the male bought a pack of cigarettes. The suspect then came to the counter and they both left. A few minutes later, the suspect received a call from the male. He said he kicked the suspect out of his car because she stole a bottle of wine. He would not stay on the scene.

Being a Marine on active duty in Kuwait and Iraq, there are probably times when a surprise comes along. But Lance Cpl. Danny Rocke got quite a surprise when returning home to Ormond Beach on leave Oct. 29. There were about 40 people, including representatives of Ormond Strong and other veterans groups, waiting for his flight at Daytona Beach International Airport. As he walked from the gate with his wife and daughter, he saw the group cheering and waving flags. Just as he suspected, it was all arranged by Janie Rocke, his grandmother, who worked with neighbors to line her street, Stratford Place, with yellow ribbons last spring to remember deployed servicemen. The ribbons have stayed tied to trees all this time, though they took a hit from Hurricane Matthew. After his leave is over, Rocke will return to 29 Palms Marine Corps Base in California to await a new assignment. He just served seven months in the Middle East and has a couple of years to go in his stint. On hand to greet the Marine

Dangerous crossing Limiting left turns could affect businesses.
WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR
Residences on the east and shopping on the west means that pedestrians often cross this section of Nova Road.
HAVE YOUR SAY The public is welcome to comment on whether a median should be added in Nova Road from Sterthaus to Wilmette, if short medians should be added at strategic locations, of if nothing should be done. Email comments to kwiddison@ ghyabi.com by Nov. 10.
The free-wheeling stretch of Nova Road from Sterthaus Drive to Wilmette Avenue, where a center lane offers unlimited left turns, could see some changes in coming years. FDOT and the city are looking at safer ways for pedestrians to cross the thoroughfare, which has three lanes in each direction, plus a turn lane. There have been two people in wheelchairs hit by cars trying to cross the highway, and local businesswoman Amy Rugg knew one of them. “It was horrific,” she said at a public meeting Oct. 27 with FDOT and city representatives. The person was hospitalized but later released. “We have to give people in wheelchairs the chance to get safely where they need to go,” she said. On the east side of Nova Road are apartments and assisted living facilities, and on the west side are retail businesses including The Trails Shopping Center. This attracts pedestrian traffic across the road, including people in wheelchairs. The purpose of the meeting, arranged by FDOT, was to get public opinion on different options to make pedestrian crossing safer.
“We have to give people in wheelchairs the chance to get safely where they need to go.” AMY RUGG, resident speaking at FDOT meeting
Richard Morrow, traffic engineer for FDOT, said the agency has observed dangerous conditions of people walking across the six lanes of traffic, often standing in the turn lane waiting for traffic to clear. City officials have also noticed the problem, and City Commissioner Bill Partington has commented about it at a City Commission meeting. Morrow noted that there are traffic lights at Granada Boulevard and Wilmette Avenue, but people don’t walk down to those intersections. Morrow said there is no project and no funding at this time, and it’s only in the discussion stage. He said the next step, after getting public input, will be for FDOT and city of Ormond Beach staff to get together and decide what action, if any, should be taken. THE OPTIONS
The first option is to do nothing, Morrow said. The second option is to install three raised medians. Morrow said they have found three locations that have the least impact on vehicles turning left into businesses. These medians would have a refuge area for pedestrians to wait until traffic clears and would be cut out for wheelchairs.
The third option is to have a raised median from Sterthaus to Wilmette. It would only have openings for major intersections, preventing the unlimited leftturn opportunities into businesses. If Option 3 is selected, a public hearing will be necessary because of the impact on traffic and businesses. “It’s the safest option for pedestrians, but takes away the left-turn option,” Morrow said. Nova Road does not qualify for a pedestrian crossing, such as found on West Granada Boulevard at Grind Gastropub, because it has three lanes in each direction. FDOT only installs pedestrian crossings on roads with two lanes in each direction, for pedestrian safety. There is also an option for a traffic light at Old Kings Road and Nova Road. Morrow said present traffic numbers do not warrant a light, but the condo being constructed on Sterthaus Drive could increase traffic to a point where a light will be needed. The public meeting was advertised in newspapers, radios and the city website, and post cards were mailed to nearby residents. Businesses were also contacted.

The Mainland Buccaneers’ (9-0) most recent 70-7 drubbing of the Seabreeze Sandcrabs (1-7) has created much conversation about the two programs’ past, present and future. One seems to be peaking while the other is on a steady decline. Six years ago, Seabreeze celebrated its last victory over the Bucs. Since then, Mainland has owned the crosstown rivalry. When it comes to the Sandcrabs’ alumni, they are not pleased. Ormond Pride president/coach Brian Colubiale played with the Seabreeze for three years in the late ’80s. Seabreeze won each of those contests. Now, as he attends the rivalry to support the Bucs — due to his son, Jason — and it hasn’t been easy to watch for him. “It’s not a rivalry and hasn’t really been in the last three years,” he said. “Being a coach to so many kids in the area, it hurts to see games like that, especially when it’s your school you graduated from. No coach likes games like that.” In the last several years, the Bucs have only reloaded their roster, while the Sandcrabs’ top players have sought greener pastures. Has Daytona seen the last of the halfcentury crosstown rivalry?

OrmondBeachObserver.com
eaded to the state playoffs for its 24th consecutive season, Mainland’s championship opportunity has gone from a window to an open door. Now that five-time defending 6A champ Miami Central is no longer waiting in the wings, the Bucs have become the title favorites. Nevertheless, Mainland’s still not satisfied with its level of play. Upon hearing that his postseason rival had been eliminated from playoff contention two weeks ago, Buccaneers head coach Scott Wilson reached out to Miami Central with this message: “We have a bye week in Week 11. We would be willing to play you guys, as we know that playing you would make us better.” Yep, the Bucs desperately want a title, and they are willing to play an extra game — against the defending champs — if it means they can get better for the playoffs. In the last several years, Central thwarted Mainland’s attempts at its first state title since 2004. Because of their frequent playoff duels, the Bucs have developed matured. Even when they fall behind or struggle early in games, they remain calm and continue to play their style. They’ve seen it all against Central, and they wanted more this year. Due to certain restrictions, the proposed game won’t happen, but Wilson’s plea exhibited the heart of the Bucs. The Seabreeze game also demonstrates the team’s dedication, but not just because of the 70-7 score. Even though they were the heavy favorites going in, the Bucs stayed to their usual practice regimen throughout the week. Wilson didn’t give his players any time off. He understands what each week represents — not only time to prepare for the next game, but time prepare for the biggest games. Up next for Mainland is Okeechobe in the first round of the playoffs. Senior Denzel Houston has played his best football this season, and senior Cyrus Fagan has led the defense. Mainland has scored at least 35 points in all of its games, and the defense has allowed 22 or few points in all games. In two weeks, the Bucs will get tested more than they’ve been throughout the season, but that’s not surprising to them. That’s why they take no days off.

Now that regionals have wrapped up, Seabreeze, Mainland and Father Lopez have students who will be running in the state competitions. The Sandcrabs girls and boys both placed third as a team. Logan Horning (fifth) and Shane Brownwigg (17th) placed in the Top 10 for boys, and Lea Gray (ninth) and Nina Cox (12th) for girls. For Lopez, both girls and boys teams are headed back to states for a fourth consecutive year. The girls finished fourth and boys fifth. Bryanna Pado closed out the Top 20 for the girls, and Noah Van der Burgt (fifth) and Tanner Rosolino (14th) placed in the Top 20 for the boys. August Deberri will be representing Mainland, after placing 13th. The Florida High School Cross Country State Championships will be held Nov. 5, in Tallahassee.

The Ormond Beach Pride 14U finished the regular season with an unblemished 6-0 record. Up next, the Pride will be playing in its FYFCC Conference Championship game against the Gainesville Rattlers at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in Daytona. The winner will advance to the South East Regional Tournament in American Youth Football in Bradenton. The Pride 6U, 10U and 12U teams will also be playing in championship games, making this the most successful season yet with four out of five levels. The 10U team advanced after a three-way tie with Flagler and Daytona. The firt game will begin at 9 a.m.
Buzz adds medals Buzz Porter, 81, entered 10 events and won eight at the Ormond Senior Games Saturday, Oct. 29, at Embry-Riddle University. Porter won gold in the 50-, 100-, 200- and 400-meter races, long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault. He also took silver in the shot put and bronze in the discus. In four of those events, he attained All-American status.

Matanzas (6-2) vs. Pedro Menendez (4-5)
Jeff Dawsey
Dylan Cary
WHO WILL WIN ON FRIDAY? Headed into the last week of the regular season, I can improve my record to 30-5 with these three games. Do you agree with my picks?
Seabreeze (1-7) vs. FPC (2-6)
FPC wins 20-10 Both teams are coming off the biggest losses of their season (FPC lost to Mandarin 55-0, and Mainland beat Seabreeze 70-7), and both will finish with their worst records in at least five years. Still, the Bulldogs and Sandcrabs want to finish this season on a high note and for the seniors. FPC’s Que’Shaun Byrd will be playing his last high school game. He will make the biggest difference in this game.
Matanzas wins 17-10 With the Pirates now playoff bound, Matanzas will most likely rest a lot of starters and key players for this regular season finale. The question is when will coach Robert Ripley pull them? Pedro Menendez, on the other hand, has been eliminated from playoff contention and will look to close out the season with a win. Menendez’s quarterback exploded for over 300 total yards and four touchdowns against Orange Park last week, so the Pirates will have their hands full with an explosive offense.
Father Lopez (2-6) vs. Victory Christian (7-1) Victory Christian wins 50-3 The Green Wave defense has allowed at least 33 points in every game this year, and Victory Christian knows how to score point in bunches. The Storm has only been held to under 20 points once this season and only allowed one opponent to score more than 30. Note: Mainland (9-0) has concluded its regular season.

The school declared Oct. 25 as ‘Grandma V Day’ in honor of Felicia Vinciquerra. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
There’s no task at Tomoka Elementary School that 90-yearold volunteer Felicia Vinciquerra won’t do. Known around the campus as “Grandma V,” Vinciquerra works at the school twice a week doing everything from running errands for teachers to laminating posters to tying students’ shoes. She started volunteering at the school when her grandson started kindergarten in 2001. “He’s 20 now, and I’m still in kindergarten,” she laughed. “I
like to stay busy. I’ll do whatever job I can.” To celebrate Grandma V’s 90th birthday, the school declared Oct. 25 “Grandma V Day” and held a party for her in the media center. Students came and visited the volunteer, bringing her birthday cards and giving her tons of hugs. Kids stood in a line out the door to greet her, and she took a moment to thank each and every one. “The kids are so great,” she said. “I feel like a celebrity when I come to school. I never expected this.”

toddler-sized fireman pets a cowardly lion. A zombie munches on a bite-sized Snickers bar. A skeleton flies by on a skateboard. It's Halloween on Riverside Drive, and virtually anything is possible. The one-way street on beachside doesn't get much traffic during the rest of year, but on Oct. 31 it's filled with so many kids trick-or-treating that the Ormond Beach Police Department has to put up roadblocks to prevent any extra traffic. "We see like 800 kids on this street," resident Maria Kostidakis said. "I bought about 17 bags of candy. We usually run out around 8:30 — if we make it that long." — EMILY BLACKWOOD

Ormond ‘MOvember’ kicks off The month-long event is raising money and awareness for men’s health. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
Andrew Gall didn’t start growing facial hair until he got out of a job that never let him do it. And once he started, there was no stopping. “Beards and bow ties accidentally became my identity,” he said, chuckling. “Mustaches and facial hair are popular. They generate conversations.” Now Gall is hoping to direct those conversations toward to the topic of men’s health for the global MOvember movement, a month-long campaign that raises money and awareness about men’s health. A kick-off party was held Nov. 1 at Frame of Mind in Ormond Beach to get the campaign’s momentum going. Ormond Brewing Company provided free beer, Dollface Hair Salon provided all the supplies for guys to get a fresh shave to start

Clinton wins in mock election at Tomoka Elementary The students participated in a nationwide student voting day Nov. 1. EMILY BLACKWOOD COMMUNITY EDITOR
With their heads barely taller than the cardboard voting booths they stood in, students from Tomoka Elementary School spent Nov. 1 voting for the next president of the United States. While some students were more open than others about whom they voted for, most remained quiet about their choice, and proudly accepted their “I Voted” sticker. After 8 p.m., the votes were in: Hilary Clinton, 333; Donald Trump, 237. Ormond Beach Middle School also took part, but only 48 students voted. Donald Trump won by four votes. Tomoka is the only school that did a schoolwide vote in Volusia County. “Their voice is important,” said Tomoka Elementary Academic Coach Josie Stumpf. “We also taught them how to get along with people who vote differently than them. I think the way the culture is right now during this election, that’s really important.” In total, Florida had 52,584 votes from students. Clinton won by 13,605. Visit studiesweekly. com.
