Of all the ways to take a tour through the news of a particular year, sound bites are my favorite. For better or worse, they are always taken out of context, but for me, that’s the BRIAN MCMILLAN fun of it and the challenge: We remember the context because of the quote. Which is your favorite quote of the year? Email me at editor@ormondbeachobserver.com.

Elementary students, on the holidays
‘‘
“Christmas means being thankful, being happy, getting presents, being loved, and doing stuff for my family.” — Lilly Fox, Jennifer Bronson’s first-grade class at Ormond Beach Elementary “Christmas means your parents get you presents, and Santa Claus gets you presents. So you better be good so you can get some presents.” — Kaylee Robison, Jennifer Bronson’s first-grade class at Ormond Beach Elementary “Every year me and my family go look at all the Christmas lights and decorations. We get sleigh rides from Santa Claus and we ride all around the block. We watch a new Christmas movie every year. When it is time to go to bed I read ‘The Night Before Christmas’ And that’s what Christmas means to me.” — Molly Bronson, fourth grade at Ormond Beach Elementary “As a family we always decorate the tree together and hang up candy canes. We also do an annual cook baking affair. We make cookies of all kinds. My favorite kind is chocolate chip.” — Camryn Neat, fourth grade at Ormond Beach Elementary

Jan. 14 Can I have my fake IDs back? 3:08 p.m. — 400 Block of West Granada Boulevard. Fraud. The bank teller said the suspect approached the counter and presented a withdrawal slip for $4,650, an Arizona driver’s license with the victim’s information and a phony credit card with the victim’s information. The teller, who was from Arizona, recognized the license and the card as fake. The teller began to check the account information. The suspect asked for the license and credit card back, but the teller denied his request. The suspect then fled, heading across Granada Boulevard. The teller notified surrounding bank branches about the attempted fraud and put a hold on the victim’s account. Two fraudulent transactions had been made on the account. A copy of the surveillance tape was provided to police.
May 7
Special delivery 7:22 p.m. — 500 Block of Sterthaus Drive Vandalism. The victim said she returned to her residence at 5:45 p.m. and found a plastic bag in the wicker basket mailbox next to her door. Upon inspection, she discovered that the plastic bag contained dog feces. Attached to the plastic bag was a note, stating that the feces was found in the grass of the apartment complex, and she should pick up after her dog in the future. There are no suspects. The victim said the wicker basket is worth $10.
July 8
Excuse doesn’t hold water 9:49 p.m. — 200 Block of North Nova Road. Suspicious Incident. A witness reported that two men were filling up water tanks from a fire hydrant behind a restaurant in a shopping plaza. Upon arrival, the officer made contact with the suspects as they were pressure washing a dumpster. They had a truck labeled with a company name and pressure washing equipment in the back. They said their boss told them they were allowed to use any water access on the property. They were contracted to wash sidewalks, roadways and anything the property manager wanted washed. On the phone, the boss confirmed what the men said. He said they have a wrench to open up the fire hydrants and have been “doing this for years.” He said it was approved through the property manager. The officer contacted the fire department, and was told that a box is provided to companies that want to use fire hydrants. The box tabulates the water usage so that the business can be charged for water used. The pressure washing company did not have this box. The officer told the boss he may be committing theft.
Aug. 24
Dog helps child return home 8:23 a.m. — 100 Block of Ormond Shores Drive. Found Child. Two witnesses looked out a window and saw a small child with a dog in the street. They went out front and stayed with the child until police arrived. The officer tried to talk to child to get a name or address but got no results. Another officer began sweeping the area to look for a parent. The child was able to say the dog’s name, so the officers decided to tell the dog to go home and then follow it. The dog led them to a house on a street around the corner. The front gate and front door of the home were open. The resident confirmed that the dog and child were missing. Investigation revealed that the child had unlocked the dead bolt on the door, opened the gate latch and walked down the street while her mother was asleep. The residence was in good condition with plenty of food. The mother said she would take security measures to make sure it did not happen again. The officers told the mother that they would have to notify the Department of Children and Families.

Late-night visitor 1:59 a.m. — 800 Block of South Atlantic Avenue. Trespasser. The officer observed a male with no pants on and buttocks exposed, standing in the gazebo at the southeast corner of Andy Romano Park. The suspect said he was changing his clothes and feeding the birds. The officer said he was being trespassed from the park for being there after closing time, and if he returned he would be arrested. The suspect declined a copy of the trespass report and left the park.
Nov. 1
Careful with those icons 8:53 p.m. — First Block of West Granada Boulevard. Well-Being Check. The victim said he received a text message from his daughter saying, “SOS I’m in trouble.” The text was accompanied by a map. The victim tried to call and text his daughter with negative results. The victim was concerned because his daughter had problems with her ex-husband. A ping of the daughter’s phone showed a location and officers searched that area. Officers also obtained a key from the daughter’s apartment manager and searched her apartment. There was no sign of a struggle.
