+ Thrift boutique owners buy rare sculptures for $2 Paul Caccone purchased two dove sculptures from a yard sale because he thought they were neat. “I walked about two blocks away, and I said to my wife, ‘I’m gonna go back and buy the birds,’” Caccone said. “They were only a dollar apiece, and if we get five bucks, we can make a little bit of profit. I did a bit of research, and my heart stopped.” Caccone found out the dove sculptures were made in 1975 by American sculptor Cleo Hardwig and were selling online for $385. “I kept trying to figure out if they were real or not real,” Caccone said. “They appear to be. Hardwig is a very famous sculptor. Some of her work sells for over $2,000.” Caccone owns the boutique with his wife, Kathy. They get a lot of their inventory from local yard sales. “We very rarely leave Ormond Beach,” Paul Caccone said. “And we do very well. The jewelry we find is incredible. It’s amazing what’s out there.”
+ Historical Society awarded $14,000 The Ormond Beach Historical Society got a little bump in its budget recently. The organization was awarded $14,796 from the Florida Legislature. “We are so proud to be the recipient of this grant, which will help the society continue the important work being done to share the rich history of Ormond Beach through education and preservation,” Historical Society President Diana Simmons said.

Ormond man on comic crusade A Seabreeze teacher is raising money so he can distribute his book for free. A middle school kid named Hector was tired of getting beat up. High school kids hung out around the only two routes on his way home from school. Every day they were beating him up and taking his money. So he decided to take matters into his own hands and brought a knife. He was expelled. His teacher, Robert Hernandez, said this type of misunderstood situation happens all too often. “In the paper, you see ‘Boy brings knife to
school,’” Hernandez said. “But, in reality, it’s a rational response for a middle school kid in that situation. There’s a lot of misunderstood things that are categorized as violence.” Hernandez, who is currently a teacher at Seabreeze High School, said middle school students are more vulnerable to violence because that is when their behavior patterns are being learned. “I want to get to them before their personalities are revealed,” Her-

That’s where my motivation came from.” Hernandez, a teacher since 1984, recently developed a solution to separate the real bullying from misunderstood actions. “Violence: A Graphic Essay” is a comic book written by Hernandez to address the issue of violence in early teens. “I wanted something that would stick,” Hernandez said. “And the

Ormond schools: mixed results in FCAT The Ormond Beach Middle School eighth-grade class was up in all categories in the FCAT results released last week, while the other grades at the school were down. At Seabreeze High School, the 10th-grade class showed improvements in reading while the ninth grade dipped. The Comparisons chart (See Page 4) shows the percentages of students who scored at least Level 3, which means they demonstrated a satisfactory level of success. Individual scores for each grade level for all schools in Ormond Beach, including the five elementary schools, can be found on the website, myvolusiaschools.org. The past year was a transitional year for testing. The students were instructed using a blend of the current standards and the new Florida Standards, which take effect next year. Alicia Parker, assistant director of Program Accountability and Testing for the county, said that overall in the county, she saw “really good” gains in math and science. She said there were no serious decreases in reading, but the county did not have the gains it had in math and science. She said disappointing results were specific to certain grades at certain schools, and she said the county will “spend a lot of time” to find the reasons. “There can be a lot of contributing factors to consider,” she said. For example, the school could have been trying a new training meth-

elections heat up By Wayne Grant | News Editor
Fred Costello gets challenger Also: Supervisor of Elections Ann McFall encourages residents to vote in primary. A challenger from the Democratic Party has stepped forward in the race for representative of District 25 in the state house Legislature. Rep. Dave Hood has announced that he will not seek reelection. Fred Costello, a Republican who served in the house from 2010 to 2012, announced his candidacy in February. At the monthly meeting of the Democratic Club of Northeast Volusia on June 10, Noel Cheryl Bickford, a 15-year Ormond Beach resident, announced she will travel to Tallahassee next week and formally file her candidacy. This will be her first try at public office. Bickford, 62, has a master’s degree in business administration and worked as a health care administrator before moving to Ormond Beach. She operated a shop on Beach Street in Daytona Beach for three years. Currently she is on the board of directors of Little Theatre in New Smyrna Beach. She has served on the board of directors of Ormond Memorial Art Museum, Seaside Music Theater and St. James Episcopal School. Costello, 64, currently has a dental practice. He was mayor of Ormond Beach from 2002 to 2010.

Noel Cheryl Bickford announces her candidacy for house representative.
Costello was a city commissioner from 1999 to 2002 and has served on the Volusia Council of Governments, Volusia Transportation Planning Organization and Ormond Beach Development Review Board and Planning Board. He is past president of Tiger Bay Club, Kiwanis, and as a board member of United Way. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1974 to 1977. Also at the meeting of the Northeast Democrats, Volusia County Elections Supervisor Ann McFall gave an update on changes for this year’s election. She said that every city in Volusia
County will have something on the primary ballot and urged the public to be sure to vote in August. She said that in the past, the turnout for primaries has been as low as 20%. “The races that make the biggest difference in your life are on the primary ballot,” she said. “Don’t wait until November to vote.” For example, she said Volusia County School Board members will be elected in the primary election. She noted that 52% of the voters in the 2012 were over the age of 55, and 53% were females. “So those running for office should find females over 55,” she said to laughter in the audience. She was asked if two forms of ID were required when voting. She answered that one ID can be used, if it has both signature and photo. See volusiaelections.org for specifics. Another rule change requires a 10-day period beyond the election for oversea ballots to be counted. Previously, this wait was only for federal elections, but it has been extended to all elections. If there is a recount, she said, it will have to wait until 10 days after the election. wayne@ormondbeachobserver.com

They are currently seeking participants for Dancing with Desire: The Grand Competition. Carol Anderson, of Absolutely Ballroom, said they are looking for eight amateur dancers who will be paired with professional dancers. They will learn to dance, taking at least one lesson per week, until the competition on Jan. 10 at the News-Journal Center, where professional dancers will also perform. The participants must also be willing to solicit sponsorships, because the goal of the event is to raise money for Cinematique, the Charles and Linda Williams Children’s Museum at the Museum of Arts and Sciences and Volusia County Schools Performing Arts programs. In fact, one daughter thought he worked at a hotel, because every Saturday before a home game they would drop him off at the team hotel, so he could “go to work.” His daughters enjoy sports, such as basketball and soccer, and he takes them shooting and bow hunting. “I think it’s important to get out and do things together,” he said. Family life is different for a professional football player. When he had road games, he was gone all weekend, and was also gone for a few weeks each summer for training camp. But after the season ended, he was home for three months. As he looks back on his career, he said he will miss hanging out with the guys, joking and talking about the game. “You go through a lot of battles together … especially the offensive line,” he said. “Nobody knows what it’s like.” He said a lot of players don’t know what they are going to do after retirement, but he’s using it as an opportunity to do something he enjoys: working on motorcycles. “I like to take something that is broken and fix it,” he said.

We try to replicate things that are positive and decrease things that are negative.” Next year, the FCAT will be gone, and schools will adopt the Florida Standards, which are Common Core standards revised by the Florida Department of Education. She said many historical documents are written in cursive, and it’s important that people be able to read them. “If you can’t write it, you can’t read it,” she said. She said that people are also concerned about content in educational materials, rather than just teaching methods. “Are they reading about Columbus discovering America or about labor unions?” she said.
Next year, Parker said, reading and math will be different, but science testing will be the same as FCAT. More grade levels will be taking the tests on computers next year. Also, math will be changed, with grade levels learning division and multiplication at different times. “Math and language arts will be more rigorous,” she said. “The standards will be definitely be more challenging.” But testing is necessary, she said. “It’s a good way to check and see if our teaching is in line with rest of state or district,” she said. “We want to make sure we are giving the best education we can.”

FIELD DAYS By Wayne Grant | News Editor
City manager gets her hands dirty Joyce Shanahan learns employee problems and concerns as she works in the field, getting to know Ormond’s ins and outs. The old joke is that when you see two workers digging a hole, one of them is always leaning on a shovel. City Manager Joyce Shanahan will tell you it’s not a joke but actually true, and there’s a good reason for it. She found out what it’s like to dig on a hot day in her Field Day program, where she takes on a city employee’s job. It was 85 degrees the day Shanahan helped dig a 4-foot deep trench for a sewer line. “Honestly, you can’t dig nonstop,” she said. “It’s exhausting. I was the one leaning on a shovel.” In the Field Day program, Shanahan learns the details of city jobs, so that when there is a request in the budget for equipment, or some type of problem, Shanahan knows what the city staff is talking about. “It’s been very beneficial,” she said. “It helps me understand what crew members do.” It also gives her a chance to talk to employees one on one.
Joyce Shanahan suits up to take part in an exercise with the police department.
City Manager Joyce Shanahan and city employee Danny Corbin, maintenance worker, get ready to operate a mower. “They are not shy,” Shanahan said. Sometimes, an employee may need a part that does not cost a lot of money. Shanahan can expedite the purchasing process, so the employee doesn’t have to wait a year for it to be placed in the budget. For example, when she dressed up in a padded suit to learn how to subdue an unruly suspect with the police department, she discovered the suit was held together with duct tape. She made sure the police got a new one. Reading meters may look like it only involves strolling down the street, but there’s much more to it, Shanahan learned. “A lot of people don’t trim around the meters,” she said. “And they are full of
sand and bugs. I don’t like bugs.” And when she tried to read the meters, her glasses would steam up because it was so hot. (The city is currently replacing the manual-read meters with touch-read and radio-read meters in a five- to eightyear project.) Another project involved adding chemicals at a sewage lift station. “It’s very aromatic,” she said. She has also dipped a cup in sewage at the main treatment plant for testing, and found that a lot of things advertised as flushable do not biodegrade. The city recently redesigned the impeller system at the plant so these items don’t clog up the system. “That commercial that shows someone

dumping golf balls down a toilet doesn’t help us,” she said. She also has gone down into a manhole to remove tires and other objects from stormwater lines. People throw all kinds of things down the drains along the streets, she said, but they are designed only for stormwater. Other Field Day projects include operating an industrial mower, unloading and spreading mulch, taking part in an “active shooter” exercise with police, sign-making, code enforcement and street sweeping. “We have an amazing group of employees,” Shanahan said. “They do their jobs well, and I’m proud to be part of that.” wayne@ormondbeachobserver.com

LIFE’S A BEACH By Wayne Grant | News Editor
MEET TERRIE BARR Ormond’s only beach vendor ‘People ask me why I keep doing it. I tell them because I love it,’ Barr says. ‘It’s my happy place.’ From inside the food truck parked on the beach, each window reveals a bright, postcardworthy scene: waves breaking onto the shore, children playing, colorful umbrellas. A comfortable sea breeze wafts through, along with the sound of the churning surf. “This is my happy place,” said Terrie Barr, owner of T’s House of Dogs, the only beach vendor in Ormond Beach. It has not been easy, keeping her “happy place” for the past 11 years, but it’s where she wants to be: selling hot dogs, drinks, burgers, ice cream and more from her truck parked near the Granada approach. She enjoys talking to the customers she has come to know and the relaxed pace. “How can you not be happy in this atmosphere?” she asked. Barr, 56, started her beach food service business after working at Homac Manufacturing Co. for 28 years, fulfilling a childhood prophecy. When she was 10, her family moved to Ormond Beach. One day she pointed to a food truck on the beach and told her mother that was what she was going to do someday. She made it happen many years later after buying a truck that had been a mobile lock service. To convert it to a food truck, she cut windows and installed the sinks and necessary appliances, using skills she learned
Terrie Barr scoops ice cream in her food truck on the beach. from her father. “Dad was a small-engine mechanic,” she said. “I’m a daddy’s girl.” Her mechanical aptitude carried through life. She was the first female tool-and-die maker at Homac and was also a press operator before supervising a department. Her hard work has been recognized by Gov. Rick Scott. Barr proudly shows a letter from the governor, congratulating her for having no health violations. In fact, she has received the letter every year for four years, ever since Scott started sending them out. The business has not been a money maker, however.
“It doesn’t pay the mortgage,” she said. She said there are beach vendors in other locations that turn a profit, but she breaks even and works another job to support herself. One reason, she believes, is that her location is frequented by families that bring their own food to the beach. “People have asked me why I keep doing it,” she said. “I tell them because I love it.” Last year was the best year she ever had, she said, because the sand was good enough to allow cars every day. So far this year, only four-wheel-drive vehicles are allowed to enter the beach at the Granada approach.
Photos by Wayne Grant
The soft sand can also be a problem for her food truck. Sometimes, she can’t get onto the beach. Once there, she parks
her tires on plywood so that if water does surround her, the truck doesn’t sink into the sand. “We sometimes wonder how we’re going to get off the beach,” she said. There have been times when they have had to keep moving the plywood and drive slowly off the beach. “We’ve had good times and bad times but we’re still here,” she said. At one time, there were three beach vendors in Ormond Beach. Five years ago, Volusia County changed the rules so that all vendors had to incorporate into the Volusia County Beach Food and Ice Cream Service. They were required to deposit the necessary fees for the coming year into an account, instead of paying monthly. Barr said the other two vendors left, but she scratched up enough money, even selling her personal gold. Now she saves enough through the year to pay for the following year. It’s her happy place. “This is where I’m going to stay,” she said.

New fitness classes benefit Ormond seniors Fitness Instructor Colleen Ussia has been offering low-impact fitness classes for seniors since January. Mark Small was never much of a gym rat. But thanks to a new fitness class at the Ormond Beach Senior Center, Small is motivated to work out and stay in shape. “It has gotten me into a good routine,” Small said. “I’m keeping my weight where I want it to be, and it helps my golf game. I’ve probably picked up five to 10 yards on my drive.” The SilverSneakers Fitness Program was introduced to the senior center in January by Fitness Instructor Colleen Ussia. It was after working in a senior living facility that Ussia was exposed to how fitness can improve a senior citizen’s quality of life. “I saw how fitness helped them stay more vibrant,” Ussia said. “I want to help inspire and motivate people to have a better life.” Ussia, who got certified in 2011, teaches Trim, Tone and Flex class at 8:45 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday. The class is a combination of cardio, strength training and balance improvement. “We use to have a lot of creaky joints,” John Silliker said. “Now, they’re not creaking so much. We tend to get a little couch potato-y, so this gives us a motive to go

She said a wire transfer was arranged through a bank. The method of payment was originally supposed to be a check, but she received an email that she thought was from the title company changing the method to a wire transfer. The employee called the victim, and said the email did not come from her and she needed to call the bank immediately and call back the transfer. A bank representative told her it was too late to call it back. The documentation indicated that the money was transferred to a bank in another state. All supporting documents were kept as evidence.

Mike LoMonaco poses at an outdoor rink.
An icy anomaly There’s a photograph that for years hung in the upstairs game room of my parents’ house in Virginia, and I never really understood it. My dad, around my age (that’s 23), is posing on an outdoor ice rink wearing a hockey sweater and skates. I never bothered to ask whether it was taken back in New York, or after he moved down to Fairfax JOEY County in the LoMONACO 1970s. The photograph sums up my relationship with him when it comes to hockey. I don’t remember the sport or the topic of me playing it being broached until I was a tween — and that’s just because the cool kids in fifth grade played roller hockey, so I was doggedly persistent about giving it a go. Evidently, my dad was really good. Not like he-should-havemoved-to-Canada-to-play-juniors-then-tried-to-go-pro good, but definitely the-ringer-in-recleagues good. Evidently, he got in really intense fights every time my mom came to watch his games. Not scuffles. Downhill donnybrooks. And evidently, it took a lifetime ban from his last league to persuade Mike to hang up the Bauers. When I ask my dad about hockey, he grins, displaying more than a few fake teeth — relics from the pre-facemask era. For a guy who tirelessly threw batting practice to me with a thrown-out back, broken leg, and extensive nerve damage to his neck (on three separate occasions), the lack of vicarious fatherly passion for teaching hockey to his only son is curious. As Father’s Day approaches, I’ve developed a few hypotheses for this phenomenon. 1. Hockey is an expensive sport, and my dad is cheap. This one makes sense; my parents already dropped a few hundred bucks each year on the latest C555 platinum bats and Pro Preferred first baseman’s mitts, so hockey may well have been too cost-prohibitive as a winter sport. 2. My mom thought hockey was

Jacob McNeely brings the puck up the ice during Volusia’s 9-2 loss Saturday in Daytona Beach.
Youthful Stingrays go cold against Jets They were never really in it. The Volusia Stingrays hockey team’s 9-2 loss to Jacksonville on Saturday eliminated it from the Central Florida High School League playoff hunt. But with just two seniors on the squad, there’s a feeling the Stingrays will be back. “It’s new, playing against older kids,” center Cameron Clark said. “It’s fun, and you get better.” The team draws players from high schools in Flagler and Volusia counties. Clark, who scored the team’s first goal Saturday, is a ris-
ing sophomore at Seabreeze. He also plays for a local club team, the Atlantic Lions. Defenseman Derek Beauchamp admitted it was tough to stay focused during the team’s two-win campaign this spring. But a commitment is a commitment, he says, and the group’s future is bright. “You just have to keep finishing,” Beauchamp said. “You can’t back out once you start a season. When you’re playing against people who are so much better than you, it helps to prepare you when you get to be an older age.”

STINGRAYS GOALIE By Joey LoMonaco | Sports Writer
Loera sidelined with cracked clavicle Within the chilly confines of an ice hockey rink, Brodie Loera is accustomed to sporting a blocker pad on his right arm and holding a goalie stick in his right hand. I n Brodie Loera s t e a d , at Saturday’s high school ice hockey matchup be-
tween Loera’s Volusia Stingrays and the Jacksonville Jets, he was relegated to a spot outside the glass boards, wearing a sling over his right arm and clutching a can of San Pellegrino orange soda. Loera, a rising junior at Flagler Palm Coast, is the Stingrays’ starting goalie but missed the 9-2 loss to Jacksonville with a broken collarbone suffered at practice last week. “A kid on our team
took a slapshot at the beginning of practice, and it broke my collarbone,” Loera said. “But I didn’t know it was broken, so I continued through practice. At the very end of practice, I threw a poke check, and it popped out of the socket and shifted.” He says the puck hit him in an area covered by his chest protector and neckpiece, but that it made contact in a “weird spot.” Loera went down immediate-
ly, and the team’s coaching staff and his mom rushed out onto the ice. “I felt the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life, you know?” he said. “I went down and was on the ice lying on my back for like 20 minutes. (Teammates) Cameron Clark and Slate Gray helped me out a lot. … They called an ambulance.” At the hospital, Loera learned he wouldn’t need surgery but will be sidelined from any kind
of physical activity for six weeks. In the meantime, he witnessed his understudy struggle through a tough netminding outing. “It’s hard to watch, I don’t like seeing us losing, and I’ve seen a lot of that this year,” Loera said of the Stingray’s season that has produced just two victories. “We’ve had a lot of suspensions, problems with penalties. Goal scoring has also been a big problem.”

SIDELINES + Toth retires from Mainland Dick Toth, who has served as athletics director for the Daytona Beach-area school since 1987, is retiring. Toth was a college basketball player at the University of Georgia in the early 1970s. He averaged 8.3 points per game for the Bulldogs, including two seasons spent as team captain. He then enjoyed a professional basketball career overseas in Belgium. Toth also served as Mainland’s boys varsity basketball coach during his tenure, leading the Bucs to the Final Four in 1987. He coached future NBA star Vince Carter during the phenom’s freshman year at Mainland. In all, Toth has been at Mainland for 35 years. He’ll be replaced by Pat Monahan.

But after three years at the Daytona Beach-area Catholic school, Berryhill has accepted a position at Trinity Prep, a grade 6-12 school in Winter Park. “I’ve loved my time at Father Lopez, and I was able to make a lot of great memories there, from the AD side of it, and also the baseball side,” Berryhill said. At Trinity, Berryhill will serve as the middle school dean, the head varsity baseball coach and also will teach PE. He was an assistant baseball coach at Trinity during the 2008-09 school year. “It’s a program, and you’re able to have access to sixth- and seventh-graders and kind of teach them the ropes, and ingrain the staples of your program,” he said. So, as far as hockey goes, I’ll have to settle for a few memories of skating indoors at the police academy, 1-on-1 on the blacktop and watching Washington Capitals games on TV. Instead of NHL defenseman Joel Ward, I got Ward Cleaver. Only, besides doling out heady life advice to me, my pops is a former SWAT commander who has a body count. I’ll take it. Happy Father’s Day, Dad. And happy Father’s Day to all the fathers in Ormond Beach.

Kids get ‘bean crafty’ at Ormond Memorial Art Museum Ormond Beach kids celebrated the end of the school year with some crafting at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum. The end of the school year signifies a few things: the start of summer, the end of the homework and the need for bean crafting. Local kids celebrated the season change Friday at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s Free Family Art Night where they created turtles, houses and stars out of bags of beans. Linda King, artist liaison, said the project was a good introduction to mosaics for kids. “It’s a fun thing for young people to get into,” she said, “and you
don’t have to worry about them cutting themselves on sharp tile.” King, who has been working at the museum since 1997, said the Free Family Art Nights are a great way to keep the community involved in art museums. “It introduces a lot of people to the art museum that normally might not think to come here,” King said. “It lets everyone know we are child-friendly. Which is a good thing because we want children to be familiar with art museums at a young age. So it serves a purpose.”
Three-year-old Aanya Attri made her first initial out of beans.

W
hile staff at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum was hanging the Colored Pencil Society of America’s Annual International Exhibition, children who were attending camps at the museum looked on in awe. “Kids relate so well to colored pencil because they’ve all drawn with a colored pencil,” said Museum Director Susan Richmond. The museum will host the work of 127 artists ranging in diversity of subject and techniques, but all pulled together by a common medium: colored pencil. The exhibit found a home in Ormond because the society will host its annual educational conference in Daytona Beach at the end of the summer. “It’s very exciting for us because we would rarely have the chance to show so many different artists in one medium,” Richmond said. According to the CPSA website, “the ‘value of drawing’ as the purest form of artistic expression has long been recognized by historians, collectors, curators and those who appreciate fine art.’’ The CPSA was founded in 1990 and is dedicated to artists working with colored pencil. It now boasts almost 1,600 artists representing 12 countries and has 24 District Chapters throughout the United States.
Richmond said the overall response to the show so far has been “wow.” With works ranging from traditional to photorealistic, Richmond said viewers were having a tough time believing that all the pieces were created 100% with colored pencil. An opening reception for the show will be held 6-8 p.m. June 13. The show will be on display through Aug. 25. The Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and noon to 4 p.m. on weekends. Surrounding gardens featuring architectural tributes to veterans are open until sunset daily.
Margi Hopkins’ “Waiting” is a more traditional look at colored pencil.
