+ Elks present scholarship awards Two local graduates recently accepted scholarship awards from the Ormond Beach Elks Lodge 2193. Kristen Curtis, daughter of Past Exalted Ruler Jackie Curtis, received $1,125 to help her study baking and pastry at Daytona State College. Carson Bell was named the 2014 Most Valuable Student Scholar by the Elks National Foundation and will receive $4,000 to help her attend the University of Florida. Both girls graduated from Seabreeze High School. In other Elks news, Lodge Scholarship Chairwoman Erika Barger, a Seabreeze alumna, recently took an oath of attorney at the Fifth District Court of Appeals in Daytona Beach.
Ben Manganaro, 25, didn’t think the worst when he noticed a swelling lymph node on the side of his neck. “I thought it was because I was getting stronger and a lot more handsome,” the East Ormond Beach CrossFit Trainer joked. “So I thought it was cool. Everyone called it my squishy.” Eventually, enough people pushed him to get it checked out. He was soon diagnosed with thyroid and lymph node cancer — almost exactly three weeks ago. “We rushed it and did the biopsy so quick,” Manganaro said. “Now I look like the Joker on my neck. If we would
have sat on it, it would have moved to other parts of the body. But we caught it quick.” Manganaro said that, thanks to the Lord, his communitywide family support and his continuously positive attitude, he is now cancerfree. “I give all my credit to the Lord,” Manganaro said. “The community around me, which I call my family, they said, ‘Ben, don’t stress. We can do this.’ I kind of sat back and never lived a day like I had cancer. In my mind, it was there, but I never let it get to me. My family, my CrossFit family, made it

Moose Market skips town, relocates to Port Orange City codes caused the market to leave the Ormond Moose Lodge. When Moose Lodge 1263 members opened up a farmers market in their parking lot, they imagined it to be a benefit for the city of Ormond Beach. But four months after they opened, they were shut down by city officials for violating property zoning codes. “I think it was a good thing for the city of Ormond,” market vendor Dean Riggs said. “I understand the rules, but I think they should have at least made
an exception or helped us find another place.” The market did eventually find another location at the City Center Municipal Complex, in Port Orange. The name of the market was changed to City Center Market and opened May 22. Kelly Marks, Moose Lodge member and market manager, said they chose this spot because Port Orange welcomed them with open arms. “With Ormond Beach, we
just couldn’t come up with a solution,” Marks said. “It had to be in a city, church or school property, and there is not frontage on a main road with that. There’s also an issue with code enforcement on signs. So if you can’t put up signs and you can’t be seen, then you can’t be busy.” Marks heard that Port Orange was looking for a Thursday market and set up a meeting
Also: City discusses 2014 capital spending. The city finally has agreements with all three unions, now that the City Commission signed off on a new contract with general employees. At the previous meeting, the commission finalized contracts with police and fire unions. Like the police and fire contracts, the general employee agreement, ratified by union members on May 19, has changes to the pension plan that officials say make it more sustainable. All new hires after December 2012 are under a “defined contribution plan” rather than a “defined benefit plan.” It will remain in effect until Sept. 30, 2016, unless a new agreement is made earlier. Raises were also provided in the contract. General employees will receive a 2.5% increase retroactive to the beginning of the current fiscal year, Oct. 1, 2013. Full-time employees will receive an increase of 25 cents per hour when the next fiscal year begins on Oct. 1, and another 25 cents per hour the following year. Part-time employees will receive an increase of 12.5 cents per hour in the next fiscal year and another 12.5-cent increase the following year. The wage increase will cost $114,800 for the next fiscal year. New hires at the city will not enjoy the same pension benefits

CITY / FROM PAGE 1 as employees hired before 2013. The city will now contribute an amount equal to 6% of an employee’s salary to be invested for retirement, which Budget Director Kelly McGuire called a “defined contribution” plan. Previously, employees receive 2.5% of their salary for every year worked. If an employee works 10 years, they receive 25% of their salary. Employees hired before 2013 are still under this plan. The difference, McGuire said, is that under the old plan, the city must set aside about 30% of an employee’s salary to be prepared for their retirement. In the new plan, the city only invests 6%. In contracts signed with the fire and police unions, the city was also able to reduce pension benefits.
Capital projects
In a workshop before the meeting, the commissioners took a look at the five-year capital improvement plan. Capital spending is for amounts over $25,000 or for items that last more than one year. Even though it’s a five-year plan, cities only budget for the first year of the plan. The next year, the five years move up, and the city again budgets for the first year of the plan, per state statute. The first item discussed was beautification, which involved something easily noticed by visitors, residents and the commissioners themselves: the landscaping on the slopes of the Interstate 95 interchange. An amount of $20,000 was budgeted to improve irrigation for the slopes for the next fiscal year, but City Manager Joyce Shanahan suggested moving the money up this year, and start watering in the
near future. Commissioner Troy Kent said he didn’t think watering would help the situation, and different plants should be installed. “I want that gateway to look fantastic,” he said. He said a major effort was made for landscaping on the slopes and now “you see that awful patch of weeds.” The officials reached a consensus to improve the irrigation for six months and see how it looks. Other items in Beautification included $600,000 for State Road A1A landscaping. FDOT will provide $500,000 for the project, and the city will contribute $100,000. In a discussion about the sports complex, Kent said it’s easy for those who don’t know their way around to get lost. “The sports complex is fantastic, but the signage is horrible,” he said. Shanahan said city staff is currently working on improving the signage and will use operating, rather than capital improvement funds. Another area that is noticeable to the public is Lake 5 in Central Park, between Hand Avenue and Fleming Avenue, which has a problem with algae bloom. City engineer John Noble said Lake 5 is a problem because it is only about 6 feet deep, while the other lakes, which were borrow pits, are 30 feet deep. The plan is to use floating mats that will soak up algae bloom at a cost of $120,000. The city has applied to St. John River Water Management District for a grant which to pay 40% of the cost. Mayor Ed Kelley didn’t think the mats will work, but Commissionner Bill Partington said, “I don’t like it, I love it. If it works, it can be used on Lakes 2 and 3.” For more, see the story at ormondbeachobserver.com.

NEWS Lohmans continue to expand BRIEFS into the apartment business new venture By Wayne Grant | News Editor
Former funeral home owners use same marketing, customer service philosophy. The Lohmans, a long-time Ormond Beach family, continue to expand into their new venture, apartment buildings, using marketing and customer service philosophies they learned while operating the largest privately owned funeral home business in Florida. Lowell Lohman and his wife, Nancy, and son, Ty, recently purchased The Reserve at Rosemont apartments in Orlando for $9 million. The Lohmans, who sold their funeral home and cemetery business in 2012 to Stonemor Partners, now own nine separate apartment complexes totaling 1,173 units. Eight are located in Volusia County. “We’re not done,” Lowell Lohman said recently. “We’re going to expand.” Lowell Lohman is the family member most involved with the apartments. Nancy Lohman is in charge of acquisitions for Stonemor, and Ty is in charge of sales. Lowell’s brother, Victor, who started the funeral home business with him 20 years ago in Ormond Beach, is in charge of cemeteries for Stonemor. They have been successful so far, according to Lohman. He said the apartments were 70-80% occupied when purchased, and now there is 98100% occupancy.
Courtesy photo
Ty, Nancy and Lowell Lohman are buying apartment buildings along the I-4 corridor. “We’re good at marketing,” Lohman said. “The first thing you have to do is invest some money.” For example, they recently purchased $50,000 worth of swing sets so that all of the apartments they own will have playgrounds. Every apartment they have purchased has a pool, and they are also replacing pool furniture at many locations. They are also taking a lot of care with the landscaping, just as they always did at their funeral homes. One advantage they have, Lohman said, is that they know how to work with families and make sure they are satisfied, skills they learned in the funeral business. “You can’t make a mistake in the funeral business,” he
said. “Everything must be perfect.” Lohman also pointed out that most apartment buildings in Florida are owned by out-of-state corporations, sort of an “absentee landlord” situation. The Lohmans are “taking advantage of that” by being close to their properties. They only plan to have apartments in the I-4 corridor between Daytona Beach and Orlando. “I’m not driving more than three hours to any apartment,” Lohman said. An important part of their marketing plan is to brand all of their apartments. The funeral homes were branded with the Lohman name, and the apartments are going to be branded Eagle Apartments.
A logo and signage for all of the apartments is currently being developed. For example, the apartment they own in New Smyrna Beach will be Eagle Briar. Others include Eagle Park, in Holly Hill; Eagle Bay, on Beach Street, and Eagle Oaks, in South Daytona. Lohman said the reason for their investment into apartments is that the family felt they had too much money in the stock market, after selling the funeral homes, and wanted to diversify. The Lohmans have now invested over $32 million in apartments in the last year and a half. However, the family has changed direction on a project that was announced last year. They had planned to build Eagle Landing, a 144-unit apartment complex on Clyde Morris Boulevard that would be used as housing by EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University students. They are presently in negotiations to sell the property to “a Georgia group” that specializes in student housing, Lohman said. “We decided not to get into construction,” he said. “That’s not what we’re best at, and we don’t have student housing. We decided to just buy existing apartments.”
FOR THE BIRDS By Wayne Grant | News Editor
Terns, humans try to get along by their droppings. “It’s been the biggest mess,” said a customer, who wished not to be identified, as she walked to her car. “I’m glad they are here, but now I have to clean my car.” Most realize it’s a temporary situation. “They don’t bother us,” said Vincent DeCapite, co-owner of Together Unisex Salon. “It’s seasonal. They come and they go. A good rain washes off everything.” Stylist Donna Whitfield, who leaves her car in the lot all day, says she just washes it off when she gets home. “We can all live together,” she said. “I enjoy watching them.” The birds apparently find the flat, tar-and-gravel roof similar to spoil islands, where they also nest. Unfortunately, when tar-and-gravel roofs are replaced, a more modern material is often used. David Hartgrove, conservation chairman for Halifax River Audubon, said being able to find a place to nest “is crucial” for the least terns. Their numbers are declining and they are listed as a species of
+ City employees receive recognition from county Three city employees were recognized for their accomplishments on May 22 at the Volusia League of Cities Annual Awards Banquet at The Club at Pelican Bay, Daytona Beach. They received the 2014 Distinquished Service Award for “their many contributions to their cities and Volusia County.” They won the awards for their categories out of all the public employees in Volusia County. John Noble, city engineer, received the award for Public Works and Utilities. He was responsible for projects such as Andy Romano Park, several road improvements, Central Park Lake Interconnects and others. His “value added” approach saved money, according to a city spokeswoman. Sylvia Frost, office manager, won the award for Parks and Recreation. In 2013, Frost organized more than 400 volunteers, who transformed the Magic Forest Playground into a unique place for children. Christina Maguire, risk manager in Human Resources, won in the “Employee Other” category. Maquire plans the city’s annual wellness day, and last year “was the driving force behind the Mayor’s Health and Fitness Challenge.” Volunteer in Community Events went to Brian Daly, who has volunteered with the city for the past 18 years.

Rooftop colony is an annual tradition. Ormond Beach has its own version of the swallows of Capistrano. For six years, the “least terns of Ormond Beach” have returned each spring to an office building rooftop on Vining Court for an approximate six-week visit, to nest and hatch their young. They prefer the beach, but since that area is crowded with humans, t h e y adapt to other suitable spots. Many customers and employees find Courtesy Photo t h e m Least tern fascinating and fun to watch. They swoop up as a flock to make a food run to the beach every morning, and again in the late afternoon, returning with silvery fishes dangling from their beaks. He said that this year they are not nesting on City Island Library, but for the first time, on Disappearing Island near Ponce Inlet. “They have a mysterious agenda,” he said. “One year a place will be full of birds and the next year, nothing.” Aside from watching the birds, some of the employees have been actively involved in saving the chicks, which sometimes fall off the roof. were provided with a chick-aboom, a device used to place chicks back on top of roofs. It consists of a long pole with a large cup on the end. The rescuer scoops up the chick and then flips them back onto the roof. Hartgrove said it was invented by the Audubon group in Tampa. Dr. Richard Brown, a dentist in the office building, said they didn’t bother him, and they are a good conversation piece with customers. “Most people understand we’re near the beach,” he said. “We enjoy having them. They are interesting.”
A May 31 crash on Interstate 95 engulfed numerous vehicles in flames and resulted in four deaths. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, at about 7:25 p.m., a semi/ tractor trailer driven by 50-year-old Barbara Pennington, of Lakeland, failed to stop for traffic that was backed up after an earlier fatal crash at Mile Marker 288. At Mile Marker 301, Pennington struck the rear of several vehicles, causing a chain reaction of several collisions. Investigators confirmed that eight passenger vehicles and three commercial vehicles were involved. Due to the collision, two semi trucks and one passenger car caught fire. At least four people were killed: Palm Coast resident Nilda Valentine Rivera, 41; Palm Coast resident Kristin J. Ruiz, 25; Jacksonville resident Jonothan Jay Ruiz, 1, who was Kristin Ruiz’s son; and Lakeland resident Barbara Pennington, 41. The following sustained injuries: Palm Coast resident Randolph Anthony Smiroldo, 54 (critical); Greenville, South Carolina, residents Joel Vanwingerden, 55 (minor) and Rebecca Lynn Vanwingerden (minor); and Ormond Beach resident Jillian Whitsitt Miller, 32 (minor injuries).

Advice for high school grads
Friedrich Hayek “Road to Serfdom,” 1944
Back in 2010, I was just a 17-year-old girl with a knack for words and a desire to see my name on something other than Deltona High S c h o o l ’s yearbook. But when I walked across the EMILY stage to get BLACKWOOD my diploma, I didn’t have a clue what to do with that. Most of my career decisions were based on recent movies I had seen, so, thanks to “Eat Pray Love,” I wanted to move to France and get a career in eating pastas. I took my first journalism class my freshman year in high school and hated it. My

teacher was a rather large man with a lot of sass and a lot of ear hair. He never encouraged me to become a reporter and occasionally tried to sway me to a different industry — possibly because I covered my ears every time he read an article about a fire or homicide. But in my defense, I’ve never been good at receiving bad news. That awful class kept me away from joining my school’s newspaper staff, which should have been a part of my fate. Instead, I joined the yearbook club where I eventually got to write a profile piece on the janitors at our school. It may not have been a page turner, but it opened me up to a side of reporting I truly love: getting to know the extraordinary sides of ordinary people. When I finally walked across that stage, I wasn’t contemplating my future career. I was

Instead of telling our young people to plan ahead, we should tell them to plan to be surprised. — Steve Carrell’s character, in “Dan in Real Life”
probably just hoping there wasn’t going to be a crowd at Chili’s where I was having my celebratory lunch. Though “the future” seemed to be the theme of my life for the month of May, it was the farthest thing from my mind. After the excitement died down, I remember waking up one morning with nothing to do. Normally, that’s a great feeling for a lazy teenager, but in this case, it was overwhelming. I remember sitting at the breakfast table and staring at a blank college application while eating my Cap’n Crunch.
I had no idea what was next. I knew I was taking a math class that summer. I knew I was having an inflatable slide at my graduation party that weekend. But as for the rest of my life, it was a blank page. And for a girl who has kept a detailed planner since she was 5 years old, that was scary. But eventually I figured it out. I found my way. So, Ormond Beach grads, when the parties die down and everyone gets busy with figuring out the rest of their lives, don’t get overwhelmed. Your future isn’t anything you’ll expect it to be. So stop expecting and just live. Congratulations on completing the first chapter of your lives and good luck on what’s next. As Steve Carrell’s character said in “Dan in Real Life”: “Instead of telling our young people to plan ahead, we should tell them to plan to be surprised.”

Editor’s note: Chloe Perez is the advertising coordinator for the Palm Coast and Ormond Beach Observers. “It’s my little mission,” said Chloe Perez, of Ormond Beach. The Ormond Beach woman has taken the task of raising and training a service dog that will eventually be provided to a person with special needs. Her assignment is to raise the dog to about the age of 2, making sure he knows all the basic commands, including sit, heel, come, stay, etc. She got the dog, Kohl, at 10 weeks of age from My Angel With Paws, a company near DeLand that provides service dogs and uses volunteers throughout Volusia County as “puppy trainers.” Perez and Kohl are constant companions after work and on the weekends, going through the training together. But, she said she’s “at peace” with the fact that she will be releasing him after his training. “I love the dog, but he’s not my pet,” she said. “He’s going to go with a lifelong companion that needs him. You’re like a foster parent.” She said he’ll someday be trained to turn off a light, open a refrigerator door or alert someone about traffic. Perez will provide the basic training, and he’ll get full training for his particular mission af-

ter she releases him. The type of service will not be determined until after graduation. “Training at an early age is essential. You’re setting up the skills for success,” she said. For example, training to heel is very important. Someday the dog could be with someone in a wheelchair, and can’t be pulling ahead on the leash. Before moving to Ormond Beach from Orlando a few months ago, Perez was a

volunteer at a riding stable, helping people with special needs get physical therapy through horseback riding. She said she “grew up riding horses,” so she was able to help the patients develop balance, improve motor skills, strengthen legs and also relate to the animals. “It was life-changing,” she said. “Any type of therapy with animals is beautiful.” She learned about My Angel With Paws after seeing a neighbor walking a golden retriever, a breed that she loves. The neighbor told her about the program. “The next day I was on the phone and on the website,” she said. “It just seemed right. There is such a need for it.” Her experience with horse therapy showed her the value of bonding with an animal. “They are so loyal and unassuming,” she said. “They don’t judge you.” Puppy trainers get a manual to go by, and must go back to the company headquarters at least every two weeks to make sure they are on schedule in their training. Perez said people should realize that being a puppy trainer requires commitment. She said Kohl is doing well but is still a puppy. “Raising a puppy is like raising a child,” she said. “He’s very curious and loves to explore.”

Free-wheeling 10:20 a.m. — 200 Block of North Nova Road. Petit Theft, First Degree. The victim said he parked his red and silver Schwinn bicycle in front of a store. Upon leaving the store, he saw a female with a pony tail, wearing a dark tank-top, riding off on the bike. The victim called police as she was riding away. While the officer was speaking to the victim, two other officers saw a male and a female, who matched the description, riding on a scooter on West Granada Boulevard. The female was holding onto a bicycle that matched the description with one hand. The officers conducted a traffic stop. The officer brought the victim to the suspects’ location and he positively identified the bicycle and the female suspect. Both suspects were then placed under arrest. The value of the bike was estimated at $250.

4:04 p.m. — 200 Block of Seton Trail. Burglary of Conveyance. The victim said he left his truck in his driveway three days ago. He went out of town and returned the next day. He noticed that the inside of his truck was ransacked and his spare key, which he keeps in the console, was in the ignition. Tools, change, CDs and sunglasses were taken from the truck. He believes the suspect did not steal the truck because the brake goes all the way to the floor and

Crime of opportunity? 6:10 p.m. — 500 Block of South Atlantic Avenue. Theft. The front desk employee had told the motel manager that $200 was missing from the cash register, s o the manager reviewed the security footage and saw that a theft had taken place. The footage showed a car pull into the parking lot with what appeared to be some type of restaurant advertisement attached to the roof. The female suspect got out of the car, and entered the lobby with what appeared to be a stack of fliers. The suspect stood at the front desk and after seeing no employee, walked around the counter and began to pull on the cash register drawer. She then found the key lying on the desk and used it to open the drawer. She removed the money, wiped the counter as if removing fingerprints, and exited the lobby. She then left in the car. The officer asked for a copy of the security footage.

5:47 p.m. — 200 Block of West Granada Boulevard. Theft. When the victim arrived at work one morning, she noticed the temperature in the store was warmer than normal. She contacted tech support for the store chain. By the next day, the store became unbearably hot, so she contacted tech support again. This time, they sent an air conditioning repairman out to check the problem. The repairman reported that someone had removed most of the copper tubing from all five air conditioning units. He said the repair would cost about $4,300, but the thieves only got about $75 worth of copper. The units were too covered with oil for fingerprints to be retrieved.

The officer told the suspect, the only occupant of the vehicle, why he pulled him over, and the suspect said he was pulled over three days ago for the same thing. The officer then asked for his driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance. The suspect took his wallet from his pocket, but did not open it. He said he did not have any ID on him. Seabreeze High hosts Heads Up Football tackling clinic Joey LoMonaco
Denard “Shoelace” Robinson at Saturday’s meet
Is that you, Shoelace? There’s no way, I told myself. I’m totally racist. I see a black guy wearing a University of Michigan T-shirt and automatically assume it’s Denard Robinson. Only, it was Denard Robinson. That’s right, there was “Shoelace,” walking up the stone steps at the far end of Hodges Stadium at the University of North Florida on Saturday. I stood on the track, futilely trying to keep my attention fixed on the upcoming heat of the women’s 100-meter hurdles that I was supposed to be shooting. I was on a contract job, a stringer gig to photograph the NCAA East preliminaries. Big Ten Photography hired me to shoot the University of Michigan, Notre JOEY and Eastern MichiLoMONACO Dame, gan University. My credential actually read “Michigan photo.” With that in mind, I figured I’d be remiss not to snap a few shots of a famous Wolverine making a cameo. So I did. I’ve met hundreds of professional athletes, interacting with them professionally on just as many occasions. Why was I so starstruck by this one guy (whom I’ve managed to plug in two prior columns in my two-plus months on the job)? Well, our birthdays are just two days apart — his Sept. 22, 1990, and mine two days later. He’s the perfect dual-threat quarterback. I’m infatuated with dual-threat quarterbacks. What do the kids call it, a “man crush”? Those who know me well also know that my favorite NFL players are Michael Vick and Tim Tebow. Pat White is a distant third. Besides that, I spent the last six months reading a book about Michigan football during the Rich Rodriguez era (also plugged in a prior column). Robinson was blowing up the college football scene at the time, and as such, he was one of book’s main characters. I read about his study habits (allegedly an avid note taker), his naturally introverted nature (which is why I didn’t drop my gear, scale the fence, and introduce myself), and a dogged competitor (just ask Tate Forcier). I learned a few other things from the meet. 1. My darned Sigma 120-300 lens can’t track anything other than people running directly at me. 2. The EMU kids were by far the most expressive of those I shot (the guy who hired me explained they were just happy to be there). 3. The NCAA watches over these kids like hawks. A jubilant EMU pole vaulter asked to see a photo I took of him, then quickly rescinded his request as he didn’t want to chance a finicky rules violation. So, while I didn’t actually introduce myself to Denard, maybe I should have. After I tweeted out a link to this column late last Monday, my iPhone buzzed. A reply from Shoelace, @DenardX. “You should have said something it’s great to meet new people.” Next time, Mr. Robinson. Next time.
The 220-pound fullback busts through the A-gap on an inside handoff and brushes aside an arm tackle. There’s just one man — a kid really, a 14-year-old cornerback — left to beat. The defender decides to go low to stop his bigger opponent. But he hesitates, shuts his eyes, and drops his pad level. Upon collision, the top of the defender’s helmet hits the runner’s knee. Lights out. It’s a concussion — or worse. That’s exactly the type of scenario Seabreeze coach Marc Beach and the Heads Up Football organization are trying to avoid by holding coaching clinics like the one Saturday, in Daytona Beach. About 50 coaches from Pop Warner through high school levels attended the clinic and learned proper terminology and tackling techniques to teach their players. Even some common terms which span generations have been updated to align with proper technique. “We used to call it ‘wrap up,’ and now they call it ‘rip up,’ as a form of tackling meant to keep your head up,” said Charles Fordam, a Daytona Beach Pop Warner coach who is also on the staff at Atlantic High School. “Hitting with your eyes open is another way to avoid head and neck injuries.” Each coach received a binder with refreshers on positioning and terminology. After seminars devoted to concussion awareness, dehydration and other topics, the group moved to the gym to participate in hands-on drills. The tackling process was broken down into steps, and after listening to instructions from certified staff, coaches took turns teaching each other to reinforce the lessons. With the increased notoriety surrounding head and neck injuries these days, more and more parents are opting to enroll their kids in “safer” sports (not football). Long-term effects of these injuries, like CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) and ALS have been directly linked to repeated head trauma. But much of the damage is the result of

It’s hard to change somebody who has been doing it wrong for 10 or 12 years.” Beach, who’s in his 14th year of coaching at Seabreeze, has witnessed first-hand the results of poor form. “We’ve had to have kids taken to the hospital because of concussions, because of ducking their heads or not being in the right position to make the tackle,” he said. As a result, the Sandcrabs incorporated Heads Up training into their spring practice regimen. “We don’t want to lose kids because

of the fear — of concussions, neck injuries, and things like that,” Beach said. That doesn’t mean they’re preaching flag football. “They’re trying to make the game safer — not trying to take the component of being physical out of the game, but just teaching the proper techniques of it,” Beach said. “We want to make it a safer and a better game.”
‘HEADS UP’ FORM 1. Breakdown position: feet shoulder width apart, squeeze shoulder blades, sink (bend knees and lower waist), bring hands forward. 2. Buzz the feet to come under control 3. + Real Living Palm West celebrates grand opening House hunting in Ormond Beach just got a little cooler. Real Living Palm West Home Realty celebrated the grand opening of its modern, high-tech office May 28. Located in the Halifax Plantation Shopping Center, the 1,200-squarefoot office will provide a different experience for potential home buyers. “There is a lot of debate around the country about what the real estate office of the future is going to look like,” Real Living Real Estate President Robert McAdams Jr. said. “I am telling you, this is it.”

If you were driving down Oceanshore Boulevard on Saturday, you might have seen Karen “Smash Tanker” Petersen skating, shouting and getting the word out. The Sintral Florida Derby Demons hosted a Family and Friends Beach Day to raise money to keep their practice space at Destination Daytona. “We practice right there under the Coca-Cola Pavilion,” blocker Tara Side said. “Ideally, we’d like to raise $1,000. That’s about a month’s rent for us.” Side said the sport was made for women who don’t play well with other women. And having a little anger to get out doesn’t hurt either. “I needed to hit people during
a divorce about eight years ago,” Side said, “and I’ve been hitting people ever since. The camaraderie of it is neat because all of a sudden you have this big family and this big sisterhood.” “I wanted to join roller derby because it was something different,” team President Erin Lariviere said. “These ladies are from all different walks of life and backgrounds. It’s really neat to have so many different personalities on the team.” The female roller derby team is currently in season. Their next home game is June 21. Visit their Facebook page for more information. Email Emily Blackwood at emily@ormondbeachobserver.com.

on Foreman crawled over the stage barricade and into the audience to connect with his fans Saturday night at the St. Augustine Amphitheater. Foreman and Switchfoot rocked the stage with songs from their new album, “Fading West,” and dedicated the song, “Saltwater Heart,” to Flagler Beach native Sefton Tranter and his family for supplying the band with surfboards during their St. Augustine stay. During their 2012 world tour, the five band members of Switchfoot were joined by a five-man film crew led by Matt Katsolis, of Interpret Studios. Katsolis, who grew up in Flagler Beach, directed a film, “Fading West,” which documented the band’s travels chasing inspiration and waves in Australia, New Zealand, Africa and Bali. “We walked into the job because we’re the only people that could do it,” Katsolis said. “Growing up in Flagler, surfing and then going to film school, I had a unique skill set that matched the band’s lifestyle and allowed the movie to be a success.” At the heart of “Fading West” is the growing conflict between Switchfoot’s roles as world-regarded musicians and passionately devoted family men. “It’s more than just leaving for a rock show, it’s the cost of fame and leaving families behind,” Katsolis said, reflecting on the project that took two years from hire to premier. Traveling for a year with the band, Katsolis and his crew, which included Tranter, were able to forge a relationship with the band which gained them access to

Sefton Tranter, A.J. Neste, Matt Katsolis and Nic McLean intimate moments. “When the worst things happened, they let us in,” Katsolis said. “They realized this isn’t just a film crew, these are guys that are going through the journey with us.” For Tranter, the relationship formed was one of mentoring. “It was really cool to talk to them about traveling and keeping the balance of family life — how you spread what you believe in and go home and be a good father,” he said. “It was great to meet them, and now they are like family.” But how do you make a rock and roll movie when the band you’re traveling with doesn’t do sex and drugs? Tranter said, “It was cool to see them
dive into each unique culture, to write songs and their new album. It was more about the people they met along the way and how they inspired them.” The film used the different cultures to explore different themes. One stop on the journey that stood out to Tranter was the stop in South Africa, when the band was reunited with the Kayamandi Township children’s choir and dance team, who inspired their 2005 song, “The Shadow Proves the Sunshine.” “Thirty or 40 kids came out running and screaming; there was hugging and tears in their eyes,” Tranter said. “To see the effect they have on people all over the world — it’s a whole band, but especially Jon (Foreman) — he truly believes in what he sings every night.” Stateside, two more Flagler Beach natives, A.J. Neste and Patrick Maxcy, contributed to the project, which premiered in the fall of 2013. Katsolis said, “I just feel fortunate being a kid from Flagler and being able to do these things. ... I’ve been contacted by a few people who were really impacted by the film, and that means more to me than a check: making people want to live a life that is bigger than themselves.” shanna@palmcoastobserver.com
