Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life!

Q. Should I take my pet to college? A. ...or should I get a pet while in college?

My initial response...not the best idea, at least not for everyone. Why? Hopefully we find our children are off to college to actually study. Studying is only part of college life. There is spontaneity and many distractions. There are many variables such as the expenses of school, transportation, medical, entertainment, etc...Housing options and time management can be very unpredictable especially for freshmen or new students. So the responsibility of pet ownership could be a hindrance verses benefit.

Graduation season is upon us, and the staff at the Ormond Beach Observer would like to congratulate all the seniors and wish them good luck. In this section, you will see the graduates who had their pictures taken at Father Lopez, Mainland and Seabreeze high schools, plus a special story on the graduates of the Pace program, on Page 12. Again, best of luck! — The Editor The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

Students do have pets. Cats may be overall a lower maintenance choice, if they remain healthy. As a student, it would have been very difficult for me to remain diligent in the responsibilities of husbandry. Study hours were often unpredictable. Finances were a challenge with class expenses not to mention any additional appetite one may have toward hobbies, travel, clothes, technology, parties, and the like. And now, 20 years later, those expenses have only inflated.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.

So, before you commit, think about your personal situation. Consider your experience in pet ownership, where you may live, how much time will you have, expense of care for the pet beyond food and shelter. Would a dog or cat be better suited to my environment? No matter what you do, stay focused on your studies! Success there will guarantee a lifetime of companionship with your pets.

Will Rogers

Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm. Winston Churchill

PACE

Congratulations, graduates! up, up and away by Emily Blackwood | Staff Writer

Five girls from PACE VolusiaFlagler on track to graduation Though it might have seemed unlikely for a few of these students, five PACE Center for Girls Volusia-Flagler will graduate May 30. In sixth grade, Christiana* used to explode. “I was getting into fights a lot and couldn’t control my anger,” she said. “If someone made me mad, I would just explode. When I started PACE in sixth grade, it wasn’t looking good. PACE taught me how to control my anger, and helped me with my academic skills.” Now about to graduate, she credits PACE Center for Girls Volusia-Flagler for her ability to control her anger and get her high school diploma. “My leadership skills have improved, and my attitude has changed,” Christina said. “I’m a better role model now.” Christina said she wants to set a good example for her nieces and nephews. “My advice to them would be to keep going, don’t let anything

bring you down,” Christina said. “Do your homework and work hard. It’s not going to be easy.” Christina’s career goals aren’t set in stone, but she pictures herself being a lawyer in New York City. Abigail* was a missing person before she joined PACE. Halfway through her senior year at high school, she dropped out and was kicked out of her house. After bouncing between living with friends, she decided it was time to finish her education. “I guess I was skipping school more than I should have,” Abigail said. “I had dropped out of school and decided it was time to go back. I was a missing person, and I didn’t want to go to school because then they would find me. It was a combination of things, but I wasn’t making good choices.” When it comes to her family,

Abigail said she’s working on improving those relationships. As for her career goals, Abigail said she’s looking up. “I want to join the Air Force,” Abigail said. “They have lots of good benefits. I think it would be a good experience, a good challenge.” She said without PACE she’d being going nowhere good. “I feel good about graduating,” Abigail said. “I’m glad it’s finally here. I think you should at least get your high school diploma. If you don’t have that, you don’t have anything.” *Last names can not be given, because PACE works with the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the DJJ does not allow identities to be revealed, reasoning that alhough not all of PACE’s students are in trouble, the 20% that are need to be protected.
