WELCOME! As we begin the new year, I challenge each of you to make this one resolution and stick to it: visit an Oro Valley Park at least once a week. This can be a visit to the Farmers Market at Steam Pump Ranch, hiking the trails at Honeybee Canyon or West Lambert Lane, making a splash at the Aquatic Center, throwing a ball at Riverfront Park or James D. Kriegh Park, strolling or biking on the multi-use path or playing fetch with your dog at Naranja Park. This program guide lists several more opportunities for you to get out and visit your parks. CHI KUNG Chi Kung (also known as Qui Gong) means energy and breath efficiently flowing through the entire body. According to Eastern thought, breathing is the primary way we bring energy into the body. We extract energy from the breath and store it in the lower abdomen, and the more we can extract and store, the better our physical condition. Energy can’t flow through tension and thus is prevented from reaching the reservoir in the lower abdomen. With Chi Kung practice, it is believed that you will be able to reach your reservoir to rejuvenate internal energy. All the energy we create gives us the opportunity to stimulate and balance our entire body to make the best of every single day. Audience: Ages 18+ Day/Time: Wednesday, 2 p.m. Session dates: Session 1: Jan. 7, 14, 21, 28 & Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25 Session 2: March 4, 11, 18, 25 & April 1, 8, 15, 22 Fee: $40 per session (drop-in fee of $8 per class) Discount: $70 per session when combining any two classes offered by Violet. RECREATION
TAI CHI - YANG FORM Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese system designed to promote optimal health, is often practiced in the outdoors, especially in China. A Harvard Medical School publication stated: “Tai Chi is often described as ‘meditation in motion,’ but it might well be called ‘medication in motion.’ There is growing evidence that this mindbody practice has value in treating or preventing many health problems.” Areas of improvement include:
TOTAL BODY TABATA
•
Muscle strength. Tai Chi strengthens both the lower and upper extremities and also the core muscles of the back and abdomen.
•
Flexibility. Women in a 2006 Stanford study significantly boosted upper and lower-body flexibility as well as strength.
•
Balance. Tai chi improves balance and, according to some studies, reduces falls. Tai chi helps train our minds ability to sense the position of one’s body in space, which declines with age. Tai chi also improves muscle strength and flexibility, which makes it easier to recover from a stumble.
Total Body Tabata is achieved through three levels of fitness intensity: beginner, intermediate and advanced. The objective is to give it your all for 20 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest. Using this method, four sets of cardio and four sets with equipment (for a total of four minutes) equal one Tabata. Class format includes an energetic warm-up targeting different parts of the body, mixed with cardio such as lunges, squats and jumping jacks. Class ends with a cool-down and final stretch. This is challenging and fun way to get in a fast work out that actually works! Tabata will continue to burn calories hours after the class, improves cardiovascular fitness, increases lean muscle mass and is an effective weight loss tool. Equipment will be provided.
