Know Your Town’s Budget

ORO VALLEY MAYOR & COUNCIL Joe Winfield, Mayor Melanie Barrett, Vice Mayor Joyce Jones-Ivey, Councilmember Josh Nicolson, Councilmember Rhonda Piña, Councilmember

The Town of Oro Valley, and local governments across Arizona, kicked off the new fiscal year July 1. Preparing for this annual reset is a deliberative process that lasts more than six months and culminates with adoption of the annual budget by your Town Council. The FY 2019-20 adopted budget totals just over $111 million, and supports the quality services and amenities that residents have come to expect, ensuring the continuation of our outstanding quality of life here in Oro Valley. Since the actual budget document is quite large, the Town has published a user-friendly overview of the budget called “Know Your Town’s Budget.” This two-page summary document gives residents a broader picture of where their tax dollars are being invested, so we invite you to take a look! You can find it on the Town’s website at www.orovalleyaz.gov. Just click on the “FY 2019-20 BUDGET” button located under the main banner.

Back-to-school safety It’s that time of year again! Most of our schools are back in session the first week of August, so we’d like to remind the community to please be cautious when driving as there will be an increase in the number of children walking and riding bikes. The Oro Valley Police Department has provided the following safety tips:

The school zone is 15 miles per hour. You must be at or below 15 miles per hour prior to entering the zone. The zone is marked by the first sign as you enter.

It is prohibited to pass another vehicle while in a school zone.

Please pay attention to the crossing guard’s directions and be prepared to stop.

School crosswalks require drivers to stop at the point a pedestrian enters into the crosswalk.

It is illegal to talk or text while driving in Oro Valley unless you use a hands free device.

Thank you for helping to keep our children safe!

Coming soon to Parks & Recreation By the time this newsletter reaches you, Oro Valley Parks and Recreation will have launched CivicRec, a new and improved way to browse online and register for recreation programs and classes. To learn more, visit the Town’s website at orovalleyaz.gov or follow Oro Valley Parks and Recreation on Facebook. The software launch date is July 22, so that means we’ll be up and running in time for fall registration. Speaking of fall, we’re also excited to announce that the Fall Program Guide will be available online in the first week of August. This guide lists all the classes, programs and special events for the months of August through December, so be sure to check the website!

Your government @ work: OV Peak Performance In 2018, Town Manager Mary Jacobs launched OV Peak Performance, an organization-wide initiative aimed at fostering a culture of continuous improvement. As technologies change and the needs of residents evolve, it is important to constantly reassess how we do business and identify areas where efficiencies can be improved or costsavings can be achieved. This initiative continues to gain momentum with Town staff, encouraging all employees to make suggestions for improvement. When an idea comes in, the Peak Performance Steering Committee reviews the idea and, when appropriate, creates a plan of action. The Town currently has 87 staff-submitted suggestions in various stages of review or implementation. Some completed examples include automating the Police Department’s process for manually entering overtime; and changing the Human Resources open enrollment process (employee benefits) to be completely paperless. Examples that directly impact residents include process improvements in the Permitting Division as well as online registration for Parks and Recreation programs. All of these improvements, whether internal or public facing, result in greater efficiency and accuracy, helping staff to better serve the residents of Oro Valley.
