At the May 2, 2018 Town Council meeting, Oro Valley Mayor Dr. Satish I. Hiremath issued a proclamation declaring Town of Oro Valley a Purple Heart Town, as designated by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. “This distinct honor recognizes cities and towns that go above and beyond for veterans,” said Mayor Hiremath. “Through events taking place in Oro Valley such as The Wall that Heals and the Veterans and First Responders 5K, as well as a veterans preference hiring policy, the Town prides itself on being a pro-military community. The Town is thrilled to be a Purple Heart Town, and will continue to support our veterans.”

Home Rule Option on the 2018 ballot At its April 18, 2018 meeting, Oro Valley Town Council approved a resolution to propose an extension of the Alternative Expenditure Limitation, or “Home Rule” Option. The question will be placed on the August 28, 2018 Primary Election ballot for voter approval. For historical context, Oro Valley voters have approved the Home Rule Option every four years since the law was implemented in 1980. In brief, a “YES” vote on Home Rule would allow Oro Valley to continue to set its own budget spending limits locally via the budget adoption process. A “NO” vote would limit the Town expenditures to the state-imposed formula limit, resulting in a 70% reduction in Town services, beginning in fiscal year 2019/20.
