Hands-free driving ordinance now in effect On January 6, 2017, a new ordinance which bans the use of hand-held electronic devices while driving took effect. It only takes a moment’s distraction to bring tragedy to a family. By becoming a “hands-free” town, Oro Valley is asking drivers to keep our families and community safe. The Oro Valley Police Department will be focusing on public education for the first few months to make sure everyone knows and understands the law.

ORO VALLEY MAYOR & COUNCIL Dr. Satish I. Hiremath, Mayor

A person who violates the ordinance and is not involved in a motor vehicle collision is subject to a civil penalty of $50 for the first violation, $100 for the second, and $200 for the third. A person who violates the ordinance and is involved in a collision is subject to a civil penalty of a minimum amount of $250.

Lou Waters, Vice Mayor

To learn more about the ordinance, visit www.orovalleyaz.gov or call the OVPD Community Resource Unit at 520-229-5081.

On January 19, 2017, Town of Oro Valley Mayor Satish I. Hiremath, D.D.S., was presented with the 2017 National Award for Local Arts Leadership for cities with a population under 100,000, by the Americans for the Arts and the United States Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C. “Every year, The U.S. Conference of Mayors recognizes the exemplary efforts of mayors who believe as much as we do that the arts are the heart of our society,” said Tom Cochran, CEO and executive director of The U.S. Conference of Mayors. Hiremath is one of only two mayors nationwide to receive this award. He was nominated by Kate Marquez, executive director for the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance. Boston Mayor Martin Walsh received the award for cities with a population greater than 100,000.

On March 13, 2017, Lambert Lane will be closed from La Cañada Drive to La Cholla Boulevard for construction activities as part of the Lambert Lane Phase 11 project. The improvements, which are scheduled for completion June 5, will lower the road profile between Hacienda Hermosa Drive and La Cañada Drive to correct the substandard sight distance. The sloped hills within this area will be steepened and lowered to widen the road to accommodate additional travel lanes, multimodal enhancements, curbs and landscaping. Local residents impacted by this road closure will have alternate routes. Stay up-to-date on this project by visiting: www.orovalleyaz.gov/town/projects.

Shop OV: Goyita’s By Dave Perry, President/CEO of the Greater Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce When Jose Luis Meza was a boy in Silver City, N.M., he fetched avocadoes and peppers for his mom Goya at her restaurant job. “He would say ‘mom, when I grow up, I want to have a restaurant,’” Goya said. “Ok, mijo.” Years later, Goya and her husband Raymundo have moved from Silver City to Sahuarita, “to help my son” open the Southern New Mexico-style restaurant in Oro Valley that bears her nickname. “This is his dream.” Her Southern New Mexico fare stars the red and green Hatch chile pepper. It’s “spicy.” “When we say it’s hot, it’s hot,” Jose Luis says, though Goya quickly adds, “we can make it whatever heat they want.” Goyita’s, the new Southern New Mexico-style restaurant at Lambert and La Cañada in Oro Valley, is a family affair. Members of the Meza family include, from left, sister-in-law Felisha Triviso with daughter Aubree, Ray, Goya, Jose Luis and Zoe Meza.

POPULAR ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT

Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2016

The newly released FY 15-16 Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) is now available on the Town’s website. Hard copies can also be picked up at Town Hall. This document makes the town’s financial information more accessible to the public by presenting a summary of accomplishments, net assets, activities, revenues, expenditures, debt and financial ratings and employee salaries and benefits.

Silver City loves her red chile with pork chops. “We don’t overload it with spices,” Goya said. “We want the natural flavor of the food.” Everything is fresh and prepared daily, and the bar is well-stocked. “This is not a fast food place,” Ray said. “Sit down and enjoy it.” Goyita’s is located at the east end of the shops south of Fry’s, along Lambert Lane, just across the street from Noble Hops.
