September Celebration of the Arts
ORO VALLEY MAYOR & COUNCIL Dr. Satish I. Hiremath, Mayor Lou Waters, Vice Mayor Joe Hornat, Councilmember
It has been 20 years since the Town of Oro Valley passed its 1% for public art ordinance, which states that 1% of the total budget for every new construction project or expansion of existing projects must be allocated for public art. The wisdom of this ordinance ensured that public art would become an integral part of the Town’s arts and cultural offerings. It also created a foundation upon which arts and culture have grown and expanded in those 20 years. To mark the occasion, the Town of Oro Valley invites residents and visitors to a month-long Celebration of the Arts, including a lineup of free concerts, art exhibits, and free admission days at Tohono Chul Park and the Children’s Museum Oro Valley. View the entire calendar of events at www.orovalleyaz.gov.

Lambert Lane update Thank you to our residents and commuters for their patience and safe driving during the Lambert Lane and La Cañada Drive road construction! This project will improve safety and visibility along Lambert Lane, while widening the roadway to accommodate additional travel lanes, multi-modal enhancements, curbs and landscaping. The work is being performed by Granite Construction, Inc., and the project is funded by the Pima Association of Governments. Construction is anticipated to be completed later this year.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers employee Rachael Galindo, 18, a CDO High School senior, tipped an Oreo concrete made with vanilla custard. It’s so thick the cherry won’t budge.
At Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, you can feast on prime beef burgers, Chicago-style hot dogs and custard treats so thick you can tip them over without consequence. The store opened last May, giving General Manager Mike Joseph the summer to hone his staff so it is “fully trained and ready to rock and roll” for the busier season. Mike is on the line as well; the former civil engineer once worked as a Freddy’s fry cook. Freddy Simon is a World War II veteran so admired that his sons and their business partner named a restaurant, and its food, for him. After the high-quality burgers, dogs and the fixings, a meal is capped with custard, ice cream’s richer, smoother cousin, in a “concrete” that seemingly won’t melt.
