EDUCATION & COMMUNITY GUIDE

Dear Friends, It has been almost ten months since I joined the Orpheum team. Those ten months have been some of the most enriching, inspiring, and eye-opening of my life. There is so much talent in the Mid-South and it is our pleasure and honor to nurture that talent and use the arts to build and strengthen communities. This guide is meant to give you a taste of all that we have to offer in terms of our programs. From school field trips to performing arts workshops, teacher professional development, summer camps, and more, we hope that you will find something in which you want to participate! We are especially excited to launch our new Saturday Series! We listened to your feedback and have moved our popular “entertainment for all” shows to Saturday mornings at a more accessible time. We’re also adding pre and post show engagement activities to bring audiences together and create fun for the whole family beyond the footlights. We are expanding our popular Broadway 101 and 101 Jr. series to include what goes on behind the scenes with a new Backstage 101 program. I’m also thrilled to share that Memphis is one of only four cities to pilot the expansion of New York City-based organization SAY: the Stuttering Association for the Young with this fall’s Camp SAY Across the USA: Memphis. This intensive weekend camp brings young people who stutter together in a safe and supportive environment where they use the arts to express themselves, build confidence, and forge a support system through friendships. Camp SAY is being offered to participants at no cost. None of our programs would be possible without the support of our generous sponsors. I want to thank them, along with all of you, for your continued investment in our commitment to arts education and community engagement. I look forward to seeing you at the Halloran Centre or the Orpheum soon! Yours in community,

Jennifer McGrath Vice President of Education Orpheum Theatre Group

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE AWARDS SAVE THE DATE FOR THE 10th ANNIVERSARY HSMTA SHOW: Thursday, May 23, 2019 The Orpheum’s High School Musical Theatre Awards program supports, promotes, and enhances high school musical theatre by recognizing achievements in all areas of the art form and bringing together hundreds of students from all over the Mid-South region to share their talents and collaborate with one another. This program is part of the Jimmy Awards, the National High School Musical Theatre Awards program sponsored by the Broadway League, that includes 40 programs from across the country. By coming together for a week-long intensive process, students gain new skills, inspire one another, and build a network of friends and peers that extends far beyond the footlights. The year of high school musicals concludes in a Tony Awards-style celebration of the passion, dedication, and energy of all students and teachers involved in producing musical theatre. Participants gather at the historic Orpheum Theatre for a not-to be-missed night of performance and awards presentation, and two leading actors are sent to New York City to perform on Broadway as part of the culminating Jimmy Awards. 8

TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Kennedy Center Arts Integration The Orpheum Theatre Group is excited to be a Kennedy Center Partners in Education team, in collaboration with Shelby County Schools. Through this program, OTG brings Kennedy Center teaching artists to work with classroom teachers from across the Mid-South. These arts integration specialists provide educators with tools and strategies to transform classrooms. Arts integration, as defined by the Kennedy Center, is “an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form.” This method allows students to learn in an innovative and engaging way and is proven to increase literacy, raise test scores, and help develop key communication skills. Teacher Training Workshops Throughout the year, the Orpheum Theatre Group brings in professionals to guide teachers through the ins and outs of theatre. From creating a season of high school theatre to managing what goes on behind the scenes, these workshops will give educators the tools they need to bring theatre to life for their students. Visit our website for detailed descriptions of each class and updates on new classes as they are added.

A typical day at camp includes music, theatre, dance, and design classes as well as sharing time and specials that range from drumming to yoga to painting and more. During sharing time, adult community leaders share their experience of losing a parent and speak about how that experience impacted their life.
