2019-2020 Education & Community Guide

Page 1

Dear Friends, As I approach my upcoming two year anniversary in the Grit and Grind City, I have been reflecting back on my journey to get here. Travel, and the ability to see foreign places, experience rich cultures, and connect with new people is a way to learn about oneself and expand one’s mind and view. It allows us to celebrate and explore our differences while also understanding our shared humanity. At the Orpheum Theatre Group, we want to make it possible for everyone to share in the enriching experiences that travel can offer, even if they are unable to get there physically in person. And so, this year, our education and community engagement performances have been curated around the theme: Bringing the World to Memphis! At each of our Saturday Series shows, we will feature a different part of the world, and we invite you to explore new cultures, ideas, art forms, and languages. Whether jamming on the darbouka with Kattam from Morocco, singing along in Spanish with Mexican musician Sonia De Los Santos, or traveling “down under” with a classic Australian story book tale, we invite you to see the world through our shows! As a special incentive, we have included a “Passport to the Arts” in this guide for you and your family to have stamped at each show you attend. Attend all six and be entered to win a free subscription to next year’s Saturday Series line up and other special rewards! We also listened to your requests and are now offering special price tickets when you attend three or more shows in the Saturday Series as part of our new “Pick 3” Package. Details can be found on pages 8-9. We are especially excited to keep expanding our storytelling initiatives. Under our new ACTs of Engagement, these initiatives aim to provide access and the opportunity to create something that will transform both the participant and the audience alike. With the success of last year’s pilot programs including our Listen Up! digital documentary film, From Where I Stand theatrical play, and History Around Memphis Poetry Slam, ACTs of Engagement is just getting started. We are making space for all stories, and we cannot wait for you to share yours or come and listen to someone else’s and be inspired. Of course, all of your favorite programs like the High School Musical Theatre Awards, Teacher Professional Development, Mending Hearts, Camp SAY, Broadway 101 and more will all be returning as well! And we are thrilled to continue our Teaching Artist Training Program that was piloted last year. As we continue to work towards making the arts accessible to all, I want to highlight the many new, free programs we offer and the grant and scholarship opportunities available to almost all the others. These scholarships and our programs in general are simply not possible without the support of our generous sponsors. I want to thank them, along with all of you, for your continued investment in our commitment to arts education and community engagement and to helping our view of the world grow. Let’s set off on an international journey together and explore other places, cultures, and people! The Orpheum Theatre Group is now boarding for your arts programming to take flight! We look forward to exploring the world with you at the Orpheum and Halloran Centre without ever leaving the Bluff City! To transformative travels through the arts,

Jennifer McGrath Vice President of Education & Community Engagement Orpheum Theatre Group
