MARQUEE The Orpheum Theatre - Memphis

Season sponsored by:

May 16-22, 2016

Dear Friends, Thank you so much for attending tonight’s performance of Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway. I am certain you are having another wonderful evening at the Orpheum Theatre. I am glad you chose to spend your time with us. So much is happening here at the Orpheum that I am not sure where to begin! We recently announced our 2016-2017 Broadway Season and the response has been enthusiastically terrific. Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage gets us started in September, followed by Jersey Boys, Annie, The Bodyguard, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, The Sound of Music and the 20th Anniversary Tour of Rent. We have a story from almost every decade in the 20th century: Depression era, World War II, the rocking 50s, the 60s and 70s and the end of the millennium, the 1990s. If you have not subscribed yet, now is the time. Subscribers get the best seats, the best prices, and the best benefits available! Our much-anticipated Summer Movie Series has also been announced. The line-up has something for everyone, including classics like Gone with the Wind and North by Northwest, comedies like Beverly Hills Cop, Tootsie, and When Harry Met Sally, and audience-participation screenings like the ever-popular Rocky Horror Picture Show, plus a chance to sing along with Grease. These titles and more make the upcoming Orpheum Summer Movie Series not to be missed! We look forward to seeing you throughout the summer. Soon, we will announce our first ever On Stage at the Halloran Centre series. These shows will be presented in our beautiful new 361-seat Halloran Centre auditorium located just next door. Look for the announcement in June and make plans to attend these “upclose-and-personal” performances starting this fall. We are currently registering campers for our 2016 Summer Broadway Camps. We have camps for all ages and all experience levels, so please check our website for more information (orpheum-memphis.com/camp). Hands-on experience with the arts is among the greatest gifts you can give your children! Make their summer memorable with one of our exciting Broadway camps. Finally, I am happy to say the Orpheum will be getting a facelift this summer. We will close the theatre for six weeks in July and early August to repair plaster, clean gold leaf, and paint the auditorium. When you come back in the fall, you will be overjoyed with how your Orpheum Theatre shines again after our summer renovations. As always, I sincerely thank you for being here and for supporting the Orpheum Theatre. Your friendship and enthusiasm for the shows on our stage are what makes all of this possible!

Modeled after the Tony™ Awards and now in its seventh year, The Orpheum’s High School Musical Theatre Awards recognize achievements in all areas of local high school theatre. Each submitted musical goes through an adjudication process where community judges attend the high school productions. The HSMTA judges are arts professionals within the Memphis community specializing in performance, directing, sound and lighting design, costume design and music orchestration and direction. How have the High School Musical Theatre Awards impacted you? Without the HSMTA, I would not have forged some of my most important relationships, been exposed to as many professionals in the area, or simply believed in myself and my talents as much as I do now. -Mariatu, Student How has this program impacted you and your students? The HSMTA have been a purely positive experience for the students and myself. I don’t think it can be overstated what a powerful effect it has on a young actor to get to perform on a stage like the Orpheum’s. The awards

staff and organizers are so generous and professional with their time and talents, providing the students (and myself) with a quality experience and valuable affirmation about the hard work and energy that they put into their performance. In a culture where the arts continue to be discounted and dismissed, the Orpheum awards have truly been a beacon of encouragement and motivation that has helped to consistently bring out the best in both myself and my students. We are all very glad that we are participants, every year. -Ryan, Teacher

(The HSMTA have) allowed students to participate in a higher level of professional theatre, and they’ve learned a lot by seeing what the other schools have done. It also gets them excited about our musical and wanting to do their best so that they can take home awards. -Chad, Teacher What advice do you have for this year’s HSMTA participants? My advice for current participants would be to give everything you have. Don’t be afraid to meet new people, share your talents, or ask questions! You never know what you may learn!

-Marlee, Student Love every moment. It’s your time to shine and share your talents on the Orpheum stage. You’ll make friends that will last a lifetime. There is never a doubt that you will do well. You will be fabulous. So enjoy. Soak up the warmth from the stage lights. Smile your best smile at the audience. Be outstanding! Be amazing! Be you!

-Olivia, Student

Do you have a favorite memory from the HSMTA you would like to share? My favorite memory is the moment the curtains opened on the night of the 2015 HSMTA’s. Performing at the Orpheum has always been a dream of mine! -Julia Anne, Student My favorite part of the HSMTA was my lead actress experience. The people I got to build relationships with during this process I consider some of my closest friends even to this day, as a freshman in college. We see each other on and off campus, run into each other at random events, keep up with each other on social media, you name it! The support and the love never stopped and continues to grow every day we have each other’s friendship. I love my group mates and that is why it is my favorite memory. It is something irreplaceable and special to me that I can only thank the HSMTA’s for giving me the opportunity to experience. -Arielle, Student Dancing on the Orpheum stage. It’s life changing! -Cameron, Student

Have fun! Truly enjoy your time performing not only on that gorgeous stage but performing with your incredible peers. These are the times you will look back on and be very thankful to have had them.

-Emily, Student

Memphis native Justin Nelson gives us the inside scoop on touring with the classic show The Wizard of Oz.

Tell us about getting cast in The Wizard of Oz. What was that process like? When living in Memphis, I would go to the UPTA auditions held yearly at Playhouse on the Square. There I began to establish a network with Joy Dewing Casting. I moved to New York October 2014. I heard about their auditions for The Wizard of Oz in April of 2015. Signed up, auditioned, got the call and 117 performances later, I’m still here! Did you always know you wanted to do musical theatre? Growing up, I thought I wanted to be a computer engineer. However, it was always in me to perform. I can remember in elementary school, we performed a Christmas show, and they gave me a small dance solo. From there, I joined the show choir in middle and high school. My first musical production at Overton High School, STAX! A musical review,

was when I knew I wanted to make this my profession! I played the role of Rufus Thomas and absolutely loved it. How has Memphis impacted you and your career? I wouldn’t be the performer that I am now without my home theatre family. Playhouse On The Square, Hattiloo, and Theatre Memphis each pushed me to explore different singing, acting and dancing styles. They also introduced me to life in the industry and things to expect in New York! What do you miss most about Memphis now that you’re on the road? I miss my family and church home the most. The first thing I want to do when I return is hug my mom. She’s been beside me my entire life with late rehearsals, performances, auditions, rejections, new headshot and dance clothes, and everything else us performers go through!

What are some great things about being on tour with The Wizard of Oz?

What is your dream role to play?

Being a part of an amazing family of talented performers, musicians and technicians! Also, seeing new cities and being in a new enviroment every week.

My dream is to play a role that I can create myself. I say that because I don’t want to be compared to someone else that has played it, but instead allow myself the freedom to explore and make bold choices.

What is your show day routine like? Do you have any pre-performance rituals?

What’s next for you once you wrap up The Wizard of Oz?

No real rituals. However, before my first entrance onstage, I say a prayer, thanking God for another opportunity, protection over the show, cast, crew, and musicians. I pray for open-mindedness from the audience and that, overall, He will calm our spirits, bring us focus and allow us to just have fun!

Well, I’ll be returning to Memphis to perform in the season opener, Mamma Mia!, at Playhouse on the Square.

Don’t miss THE WIZARD OF OZ June 14-19 For tickets: visit Orpheum-Memphis.com or call (901) 525-3000
