I am happy to announce to you - our loyal and dedicated Broadway audience - that my successor has been chosen, and I am anxious to introduce him to you. Brett Batterson is currently the Executive Director of the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago Illinois and has held that position for over 11 years. He comes to the Orpheum with an exciting list of credentials, experience, and professional successes that made him the top candidate for the position. The Auditorium Theatre has many similarities to the Orpheum. It is a historic venue that recently celebrated its 125th anniversary. The theatre has undergone major renovations and a stage expansion similar to that of the Orpheum. And we also share the fact that the Auditorium presents touring Broadway productions. However, it is unique in the fact that it is well-known for its dance performances, and it is home to the Joffrey Dance Company. The theatre also distinguished itself last year as the venue selected to host the NFL draft and the draft will return to the Auditorium in 2016. In addition to Brett’s experience as an arts administrator, he has also worked as a scenic designer and served as Project Manager for the construction of the Detroit Opera House. After opening the Opera House, he was promoted to Chief Operating Officer. Brett graduated from Augsburg College with a BA in Theatre Arts and received his Masters of Fine Arts in Theatre Design from Tulane University. His wife Veronica, the future First Lady of the Orpheum, is an accomplished author. She has published three books with a fourth soon to hit the presses. Brett and Veronica will come on board in early December, so please join me in welcoming them to Memphis and to the Orpheum family!

After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in the early ’40s to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Oklahoma! (1943), the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’ sophisticated style of musical comedy (which he had perfected in a 25year partnership with lyricist Lorenz Hart) with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta (conceived in collaboration with such composers as Sigmund Romberg, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Jerome Kern). Over the next 16 years, R&H wrote eight more Broadway musicals: Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. JILL FURMAN (Producer) received the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical for In the Heights. Other Broadway credits include Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, The Heiress, Seminar, West Side Story, The Drowsy Chaperone, Sly Fox and Fortune’s Fool. Off-Broadway credits include On the Line and Adult Entertainment. Jill also produces the hip-hop comedy group Freestyle Love Supreme, both a live show and a tv series, currently airing on the Pivot Network. In 2011 Jill received the Robert Whitehead Award for Outstanding Achievement in Commercial Theatre Producing. Member: National Board of Review of Motion Pictures. STEPHEN KOCIS (Producer) is Vice President of Aged In Wood, LLC, a Broadway production company which has been involved in such hits as Avenue Q and In the Heights (both recipients of the Tony Award for Best Musical).
