Welcome back! We hope you had a great summer. We had an exceptional one here at the Orpheum. We closed for seven weeks and totally repainted and gold leafed the auditorium. Take a moment to look around – notice the shiny gold with silver leaf accents, the fresh paint, and polished chandeliers. This theatre is one of the most beautiful in America. We are happy that we made it even more beautiful this summer. Of course, we have done more than just paint the theatre since my last letter to you. We led over 240 students through six weeks of theatre summer camps, sent our two regional High School Musical Theatre Awards winners to The Jimmy Awards competition in New York City, and welcomed thousands of movie-goers to our annual Summer Movie Series. It was indeed a terrific summer here at the Orpheum and Halloran Centre. We are looking forward to an exciting fall. With these performances of Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage, we are kicking off our 2016-2017 Broadway Season in high style. The series just keeps getting better, too. We recently announced the addition of Disney’s The Little Mermaid to the upcoming season. If you are a season ticket holder, you were the first to find out about this exciting addition. We held your seats for you so that you could add the show to your subscription. If you are not yet a season ticket holder, The Little Mermaid might convince you to become one. Please consider our new Pick Four package, which lets you customize your own series of four or more shows. Being a season ticket holder allows you to take advantage of all the perks of that status, like being the first to find out about newly added shows. It is well worth the investment. In other exciting news, we are happy to present a new group of Orpheum supporters to you in this issue of the Marquee. It’s a new group, but is composed of long time supporters of our theatre. The Club of 20 has been formed to recognize those season ticket holders who have held that status for at least 20 consecutive years. Some of the members of this group have held their tickets for over 30 years! More than 175 people are members of The Club of 20. We invite you to peruse the list and let us know if you think you have been accidentally omitted. The Orpheum Theatre Group is proud to salute these long time subscribers. We thank them for their loyalty. In closing, I thank each of you for being a patron of the historic Orpheum Theatre. Your attendance tonight is appreciated; your ongoing support is amazing. I hope you enjoy Dirty Dancing. I look forward to welcoming you back to the Orpheum and Halloran Centre for another enthralling performance soon.

An inside look into the Orpheum Theatre’s massive renovation project

T

he mission of the Orpheum Theatre Group includes preserving our beautiful theatre for future generations, calling us to be, as our President and CEO Brett Batterson says, “good stewards” of our venue. Since it is our responsibility to maintain this historic landmark as a key destination for tourists and a cultural hub for Memphians, renovations that shuttered the theatre throughout the summer have wrapped up. From the moment you step in the building, you should notice a fresher look. As you enter through the auditorium doors, you are greeted by the shine of the intricate gold leaf, dazzling after being polished to perfection. The crimson of the newly cleaned stage curtains pops in contrast, and the splendor of the historic theatre is emphasized by repainted walls. The overall project highlights the classic attributes of this grand theatre, harking back to a time of art deco, vaudeville, and flappers. “Seemingly small repairs to painting and seating, combined with an occasional major renovation like enlarging the stage and adding restrooms, are all required to ensure the future of this historic structure,” Batterson said. Our administrative office space also received a new look. In order to create an atmosphere more conducive to working, the offices were completely remodeled. With a better-organized space and an updated heating and air system, this revitalized work environment enables us to keep moving forward and keep bringing you amazing shows. Our current renovation projects are just the latest step in the preservation of the historic theatre. When it was built in 1928 for $1.6

million, the lavish brocade draperies, crystal chandeliers, gilded moldings, and the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ were some of its main features and are still maintained regularly 88 years later. Our first large-scale renovation took place in 1982 when $5 million went into significant improvements such as restoring the theatre, new heat and air systems, updated restrooms, additional loading docks, and an expanded orchestra pit. Our biggest renovation project – for a sum of about $8 million – began in 1996 and continued through 1997. Just in time for the Orpheum’s 1997-1998 Broadway Season, we expanded the stage and backstage areas for larger productions like The Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon. The orchestra pit

expanded again, new dressing rooms were created, and more offices were added. The theatre walls were repainted, and the gold leaf was refurbished as well. Those were the last major renovations to the historic theatre until last year, when we reupholstered and reconfigured the seating in the center orchestra section to give audience members more legroom. In the fall, the Orpheum will embark on its next project: adding more restrooms. These ongoing efforts make an impact – the better care we take of our theatre now, the better shows and events we can continue to bring to Memphis in the future.

the

HALLORAN CENTRE CELEBRATES ONE YEAR! On September 10, 2016, soul fans throughout the city gathered in the 361-seat theatre located inside the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education as the inaugural On Stage at the Halloran Centre series kicked off with Stax legend Booker T. Jones. It is hard to believe that what used to be the parking lot next to the historic Orpheum Theatre was transformed into a $15 million performing arts centre that has already welcomed over 22,500 people through its doors. Since its grand opening in September 2015, the Halloran Centre has allowed Orpheum education and entertainment programming to grow and has created opportunities for us to better connect with our community. The Centre serves three unique purposes, one of which has been on our wish list for years. For the first time, our summer camps were not restricted to the Orpheum lobby or Broadway Club. This summer, students from elementary through high school learned choreography and songs, stage combat, audition techniques, and more in an array of different settings including a classroom, rehearsal hall, dance studio, and stage. “It was amazing to see how the summer camp program was able to expand and utilize every space in the Halloran Centre this summer,” said Brett Batterson, President & CEO. The Centre has afforded the much-needed space for education programming to expand and also allowed for the creation of new programs. Careers in sound engineering and technical theatre have risen in demand. With the addition of the Halloran Centre and its state of the art Audio-Video Lab, students can now have hands-on experience in this field to see if it is something they want to seriously pursue. To support education initiatives and community partnerships, the Centre also serves as both a performance venue and private event space. While nationally touring artists such as The Milk Carton Kids have already graced the Halloran Centre stage, this month kicks off a special series of our own.

The On Stage at the Halloran Centre series presents an up-close-and-personal way to enjoy the best of entertainment. In its inaugural season, the series will present an array of artists, spanning genres and generations, with everyone from living legends to GRAMMY-winning up-and-comers. This first series was curated to bring the best in music to an intimate 361-seat theatre for an unrivaled listening experience. “I am anxious for the community to enjoy the acoustic intimacy of the theatre,” said Ron Jewell, Vice President of Halloran Centre Operations. The Halloran Centre’s theatre is just one of the amazing spaces in the 39,000-square-foot building. From the three-story glass lobby to the expansive reception hall, all of the Centre’s rooms are available to rent. Throughout the year, we have hosted corporate meetings in the spacious boardroom, wedding receptions in the rehearsal hall and lounge, nonprofit events in the lobby and theatre, and many more. “I want to see this Centre utilized to the max,” said Batterson. “From seniors to kids, through theatre, music, dance, and more, this place is a centre for the arts for the city of Memphis.” We want to thank the donors, supporters, students, and community members that have made the Halloran Centre’s first year unforgettable. We look forward to seeing you at summer camp, a concert, a dance class, a private event, a film, and much more very soon!

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. Turn off your cell phone and other electronic devices. The light and noise from cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction to performers and those seated around and above you. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Also, please refrain from searching through your purse or bag or unwrapping candy. You may be making more noise than you think. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 525-3000 if you have any questions. In order to help ensure the safety of our guests, all weapons are prohibited at the Orpheum Theatre and the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education. Help us keep our venues safe: if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or an Orpheum Theatre Group representative.

A note from the creator... I was blessed in my original collaborators on the film. There vision and friendship was what made it possible for us to find enough truth to reach our lovely audience. I thank them all—for their commitment, their kindness and their talent. To my beloved Emile Ardolino, who I dare to hope is smiling on us, to David Chapman who’s brilliance as a designer let us turn a low-budget movie into a world of radiance and glamour, and to my dear friend, Kenny Ortega. Kenny’s contribution went far beyond his electric and dynamic choreography. It was and is his spirit, his joy and passion for movement and the pursuit of joy—for dance as the defining point of happiness—that we have kept in our hearts and our spirits on our journey to the stage. Thank you, my beloved Kenny, thank you all. —Eleanor Bergstein

Her second novel, Ex-Lover, about sexual obsession, was published by Random House. She has worked on a variety of film projects, including the final script revision of Sister Act. She then wrote and directed Let It Be Me, which starred Campbell Scott, Jennifer Beals, Leslie Caron and Patrick Stewart. Her most famous project was one of the most successful independent films of all time, Dirty Dancing. It was the unique continuing response to the story over the years that made her decide to reimagine Dirty Dancing as a stage event. The multiple viewings by audiences all over the world made her suspect that what the audiences really wanted was to be more physically involved in the story. This would mean that its ultimate form should be one that combined dance and story and music onstage in a new way. It was also her chance to add new scenes not in the movie, as well as songs she had wanted for the movie and been unable to obtain. Ms. Bergstein, through her company Magic Hour Productions, is at work on a new stage musical set in London in the late 1960s, a new work of fiction, and preparing a film to be shot in Rome as well as film to be shot in Slovenia.
