Dear Friend, It is the middle of summer and it is hot at the Orpheum! And I don’t just mean the weather. Performances, movies, meetings, camps, teacher professional development classes, construction projects, and now Disney’s The Little Mermaid. People say things move a little slower in the Southern summer heat, but it’s just not true at the Orpheum Theatre and the Halloran Centre. Things are hopping here, regardless of the time of year or the blaze of the summer sun. We are glad you are with us today for this production. Some of you are here because you have fond memories of the classic Disney film The Little Mermaid from your own childhood. Some of you are here because you love big Broadway musicals and you know the Orpheum delivers the goods when it comes to these shows. And many of you are here because you wanted to bring an important young person in your life; a young person who enjoys the antics of Ariel and Sebastian and the rest of the great characters who live “under the sea.” To those who brought a young person, we say, “Thank You!” You have taken the time to introduce a child to the thrill of live theatre. There is no greater gift that you can give a son, daughter, or grandchild. Studies show that introducing young people to the theatre at an early age leads them to become regular theatre goers as adults. This alone is enough reason to bring them with you to the Orpheum when appropriate shows are playing. But did you know that children who participate in arts education programs repeatedly have better test scores, improved grades, and overall higher academic achievement levels? Research has proven this numerous times. We encourage you to consider enrolling your young person in one of the Orpheum Theatre Group’s many educational initiatives. From learning to sing and dance to operating a light control board to analyzing a script, the Orpheum has workshops and camps in all things theatrical. And they all will benefit your child beyond the walls of a theatre. Please visit our website and look at our class offerings for the upcoming fall. Your favorite young person will thank you forever! Now, sit back as the curtain rises on the magical kingdom of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Whatever the reason you are here today, everyone at the Orpheum Theatre Group thanks you!

Brett Batterson President & CEO Orpheum Theatre Group

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO RESTORE THE ORPHEUM THEATRE’S MIGHTY WURLITZER ORGAN TO ITS ORIGINAL 1928 SPLENDOR. The Mighty Wurlitzer organ, which celebrates its 90th birthday alongside the theatre in 2018, was built in North Tonawanda, New York, in 1928 and was shipped to the Orpheum on September 25 of that same year. The $19,000 instrument was originally purchased to play for vaudeville shows and silent movies and is now enjoyed by patrons during our annual Summer Movie Series. However, time has taken its toll on this precious instrument. A recent study of the organ, commissioned by the Orpheum Theatre Group and completed by JL Weiler, Inc. of Chicago, the nation’s most noted restorer of theatre organs, showed approximately $500,000 worth of rebuilding is needed to fully restore the instrument. They estimate that without major improvements the organ will be inoperable within the next year and a half. We invite the entire community to help us save this important piece of the Orpheum’s history. Multiple generations of patrons have enjoyed the Mighty Wurlitzer organ, and we want to ensure that future generations continue to experience it. The restoration process will involve sending the organ to JL Weiler’s shop in Chicago where it will be rebuilt, and then returning it to its place of importance at the historic Orpheum Theatre.

HOW YOU CAN HELP: •

Make a donation at Orpheum-Memphis.com/Wurlitzer

• Donate while you’re at the theatre. Ushers will be collecting donations before and after every Orpheum Theatre event.

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. Turn off your cell phone and other electronic devices. The light and noise from cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction to performers and those seated around and above you. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Also, please refrain from searching through your purse or bag or unwrapping candy. You may be making more noise than you think. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the saftey of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
