Dear Broadway Fan, Welcome to the first production of the Orpheum’s 2018-2019 Season, Love Never Dies. This sequel to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved The Phantom of the Opera is making its Memphis debut this week. I imagine most of you had never heard of the show before our season announcement last February. But there was one Memphian who had… Rachel Donaldson. Rachel heard of Love Never Dies before most of the rest of the world because she is a Broadway super-fan! In fact, at intermission of a performance at our recent run of Phantom, Rachel came up to me and asked if I knew there was a sequel to the show that had yet to play the United States. I was amazed by her question, because I had only recently heard of Love Never Dies myself. And I am paid to know these things! When she asked the question, I had already booked the show for this week, but I did not share that with her. I simply looked at her with amazement and said, “Yes, I did know. But how did you know?” Rachel knew because she makes it her business to know everything about Broadway. There are others in Memphis who do the same thing – they read about Broadway; they attend Broadway in NYC; they watch Broadway musicals turned into television shows. At the Orpheum, we love these people. They keep us on our toes. They challenge us to do our best every day. For that, we appreciate them. So, Rachel Donaldson, we thank you. Keep loving Broadway and keep coming to the Orpheum! Keep asking me difficult questions and giving me useful knowledge. And we’ll keep bringing the best of Broadway to Memphis for you. Our season is off to a great start with Love Never Dies, but this season holds many more wonderful performances over the next eleven months. We thank all of you for being part of it with us. Whether you are a super-fan, new-to-Broadway, or somewhere in between, you are a part of the Orpheum family. That is all that matters to us. Enjoy the performance,

Brett Batterson President & CEO Orpheum Theatre Group

This free two-day camp helps young people who stutter develop self-confidence, improve communication skills, and build community. Together in partnership with New York City-based SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young, the Orpheum Theatre Group is thrilled to be one of only four cities across the country to host a Camp SAY. Camp SAY Across the USA: Memphis offers team and confidence-building exercises, plus a broad range of fun games and group activities to choose from, ranging from improvisation to arts and crafts. Campers also participate in small groups to create an original artistic work — such as a play, poem, song, dance, or visual art piece — under the guidance of Camp SAY’s seasoned leadership staff and the Orpheum’s teaching artists and programming staff. It’s truly a time of celebration and empowerment, with each child receiving the time they need to express themselves fully! Exceptional staff-to-camper ratio • Expert counselors • Optional parent workshop & support group

Registration is now open at Orpheum-Memphis.com

THEATRE ETIQUETTE As a courtesy to the performers and patrons, latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance. Turn off your cell phone and other electronic devices. The light and noise from cell phones and electronic devices are a distraction to performers and those seated around and above you. No text messaging, photography, or recording. Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Also, please refrain from searching through your purse or bag or unwrapping candy. You may be making more noise than you think. The Orpheum staff and our dedicated team of volunteer ushers work hard to accommodate modern crowds in our historic theatre. Please be patient as we work to serve you as best as possible. Certain productions may not be suitable for all ages. We recommend taking the time to determine which shows are appropriate for your children. Visit our website at Orpheum-Memphis.com or call our Box Office at (901) 5253000 if you have any questions. In order to ensure the safety of our guests, purses, briefcases, and bags may be inspected upon arrival. Firearms, knives, and weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the theatre. Other items not allowed inside the theatre include illegal drugs, laser pointers, fireworks, outside food and beverages, SLRs, DSLRs, video cameras, professional cameras, including external flash camera units or interchangeable/detachable lenses, and pets other than service animals. Larger items that have the potential to block walkways or disturb other patrons will need to be stored at coat check. For your convenience, we recommend refraining from bringing large bags to the theatre. Help us keep our venues secure — if you see anything suspicious, please tell an usher or other Orpheum Theatre Group representative.
