Thank you for joining us for this engagement of one of the most important (if not the most important) musical productions to hit the stage over the past 30 years. When The Phantom of the Opera, the longest running Broadway musical in history, was originally produced, it was heralded as the biggest show to ever hit the “Great White Way,” and because of its size and required stage depth, older theatres like the Orpheum found it necessary to expand the stage, the number of dressing rooms, and the orchestra pit in order to accommodate the touring production. We undertook that renovation back in 1996, and it was finished in 1997 at a cost of almost $10 million. Of course, it was worth it because soon to follow in the Phantom’s footsteps was Miss Saigon, Sunset Boulevard, The Lion King and many more that would have otherwise never played at The Orpheum Theatre. Someone asked me when was the last time we presented Phantom at The Orpheum. It was back in 2001, over 13 years ago. It’s hard to believe that it has been that long since Phantom graced The Orpheum stage, even harder to believe when one considers how much of an indeible impression the show made in Memphis. I have no doubts that this production will once again amaze the 38,000 patrons that will see this show over its two-week run - the equivalent of filling the FedEx Forum twice. Thank you for being a part of that. Phantom kicks off the new 2014-2015 Broadway Season, and I believe that the shows to follow will be extremely successful and widely enjoyed by our loyal theatre-loving patrons and season ticket holders. In addition to our spectacular Broadway series, we will host The Orpheum’s 36th Annual Auction on Saturday November 8th as well as a long and impressive list of concerts and special events. You will find more information on our very busy fall calendar throughout this program. So enjoy this performance and please come back often. As always, we depend on your generous commitment and support.
