OREGON YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION’S MONTHLY MAGAZINE
February 2016
GOAL LINES
NEW INITIATIVES, A NEW LOOK, A WHOLE NEW YEAR! CEO & Technical Director, John Madding sets the new tone for Oregon Youth Soccer for 2016 with increased numbers, and personalized service. As we embark on another year of youth soccer in the state of Oregon we have seen the game change significantly from where we were at last year’s Annual General Mee<ng. We have con<nued to posi<on the Associa<on among the leaders na<onally in terms of crea<ng an inclusive, and player-centric environment. Our theme this year is T.E.A.M. - Together Everyone Achieves More. It is with that philosophy that we enter 2016 stronger than ever, and with the tools necessary to ensure that together we can advance the beau<ful game in Oregon.
We would also be remiss if we did not congratulate the Portland Timbers on their fantas<c MLS Cup victory in 2015. There is not a club in MLS with more passionate fans, more community involvement, and that is a beOer example of how the success on and off the field in conjunc<on with a partnership unlike any other with their state youth associa<on can yield tremendous results. We are honored and excited to have such a fantas<c rela<onship with the MLS Champs. (con<nued on page 10)
“We are extremely excited that you are part of the ride. We have no intentions, however of sitting on our laurels this year, and will continue to put the Oregon Youth Soccer Association among the best in the country. ” -John Madding CEO & Technical Director OYSA
WHAT’S NEW IN GOAL LINES? Simply put, EVERYTHING!
We’ve completely redesigned Goal Lines from the ground up to ensure that you’re getting the most out of each issue.
Starting with the delivery method itself, Goal Lines has become completely interactive and contains up-to-the minute news about what’s going on in Oregon’s soccer communities.
Like something? Click it… chances are there’s even more to the story.
WELCOME TO GOAL LINES 2.0 We’ve given Goal Lines a facelift, and brought it into the 21st century. With the ever changing landscape of soccer in the US and particularly here in Oregon we felt there was no better time to upgrade Goal Lines than right now!
Until this issue you had been receiving this as a static newsletter 4 times a year. While this was certainly appreciated by some, the general consensus was that it needed to be a vehicle that was able to communicate quickly, and stay current with the changing times! So here it is…in digital magazine format!
Now Goal Lines will be a monthly magazine, and will be packed full of content that is designed for everyone! T.E.A.M. is the theme for 2016 and that means something for everyone! So whether you’re a coach, a player, an administrator, a parent, a referee, or even someone who is brand new to the soccer world, there is something that should pique your interest.
Oh, and there are a few hidden links in the magazine to keep you on your toes. Click on a few of them to open up an entry form for this month’s competition and you could win four tickets to a T2 game. Happy hunting!
WE MADE IT EASY TO SHARE, TOO! See an article that you want to send to your team? Think there is a page that would interest the parents on your U15 girls team? How about a video clip that you know your players would love to see?
Now it’s easier than ever to share! Just click the icon up there in the top right corner of the magazine, and you can decide to share however you like! Just drag the highlighted section over to the piece you want to share, and then chose one of the pop-up options.
Share just the article that’s relevant to them, instead of the whole magazine!

MEET THE COORDINATORS All of our Grassroots Coordinators have extensive coaching background around the state of Oregon, and elsewhere so they bring unique experiences to their particular region. They range from former national youth players, international coaches, high school coaches, college coaches, Latino speaking, and even have a NWSL National Championship among their ranks.
(Top row, L-R): John Galas, Cristian Curiel, Aly Hollewijn.
(Bottom row, L-R): Graciliano Mosquera, Darren Lilla, Eihab Daoud.
GRASSROOTS COORDINATORS BRING LOCALIZED SERVICE
WHERE ARE THEY?
We could not be more excited about this ground-breaking new initiative within OYSA. We
Portland West / Coastal
realized that the scope of education we were able to provide in years past were limited by a single person who oversaw coaching education in the state. As the saying goes, ‘there’s only so much one person can do’ and that rang true in Oregon.
This new group of energetic coordinators give us tremendous flexibility and experience, as well as an incredible amount of LOCAL coverage for all of our clubs. Before these new positions were created, our furthest club was 339.4 miles away from our state coaching staff, now nearly every club is within 60 miles of a coordinator.
Their role is to provide, setup, administer, and teach coaching courses at your club, on your timeline, to make it as convenient as possible for you. It has never been easier to receive comprehensive coaching education from qualified instructors in our 42 years of existence.
You can see that our coverage is great, but it is not just geographic! We are extremely excited that a third of our Grassroots Coordinators are dedicated to our Latino population. Having this outreach program confirms our commitment to developing ALL coaches in Oregon, and especially the ones that we have traditionally had lesser success in bringing education courses to.
They’ll each be contributing to this magazine, too. They've got a lot of information to impart and all have their different take on coaching, and what it means to them, so watch in the coming issues of Goal Lines Magazine for their own individual articles.
As we said, you’ll be hearing from each of them in the coming months in Goal Lines, but to get your course scheduled now, simply click on their name to the right, to contact them!

(con<nued from page 1) Grassroots Coaching In 2015 our Director of Coaching Educa<on, Bob Bigney, took a teaching posi<on down in New Mexico to be closer to his family. We’d like to thank Bob for his service in Oregon and wish him all the best in his new role. While considering replacements for Bob's vacant posi<on we decided to take a completely new approach to our coaching educa<on program. Having one person cover the en<re state leZ us lighter on coverage than we would have preferred during peak <mes. We decided to undertake a bold new ini<a<ve and created the Grassroots Coordinator posi<ons. These six new posi<ons, posi<oned strategically across the state, give us much beOer localized coverage and enable us to support a much greater area of the popula<on. In addi<on, two of the six posi<ons are solely focused on our La<no coaching demographic which we are very eager to grow and service. We now have coverage in East Portland and the I-84 Corridor, and West Portland and the coastal regions. We have a central valley coordinator based in Eugene who will service the WillameOe Valley and Bend locales. We also have one down in the southern Oregon area that will handle the growing need for coaching educa<on down there. Our two La<no coaches are based in Portland and Corvallis and will cover individualized needs as they arise from clubs across Oregon. These coordinators, all established coaches within their own rights, will undertake coaching educa<on courses, individual club educa<on requirements as needed and requested, as well as our entry-level referee educa<on courses. We are extremely excited to see the impact that these six new posi<ons will have and know that with this new ini<a<ve we will be able to impact much more than we ever have. Referee Educa4on In addi<on to our new emphasis on coaching educa<on we have also taken the reins of our referee development in the state. We have bought onboard David Grbavac as our Manager of Referee Development who, along with new schedulers, will look to mentor, recruit, retain, and develop new referees across the state. Referees are an extremely valuable part of our game, and over the years we have seen a steady decline in the number of new referees. We are taking the lead and are extremely excited to have David on board. He is very respected in the referee world and the ideas and energy he brings to this new posi<on will make a huge difference in the state. We know in the past referees have oZen been seen as a necessary yet adversarial part of our game and we want to ensure that they are considered an equal part of our associa<on and the game in general. Without them there is no game so bringing them onboard is extremely beneficial for all par<es. We also have significant club buy-in for this new role and really feel it is going to be a team effort going forward. The NEW GoalLines Magazine! We are extremely excited to announce that we will be giving GoalLines magazine a faceliZ star<ng in February. We will be enhancing the digital version from its current format to a new magazine style that will come out monthly. There will be more content, more individualized stories, and it will be completely interac<ve with our members. Our new Marke<ng Manager, Simon Date, will be developing content on an ongoing basis with exci<ng new segments covering individual clubs, coaches, and guest contributors. There will be pieces from the Grassroots coordinators, Referee Development, and other fun items. We will have video content, polls, and targeted adver<sing with our partners. There will be special offers, prizes, and much more. We don't want to give too much away at this point but look for the brand new version arriving in late February in your inbox. Partnerships We are excited to con<nue our partnerships with Gear FC as the official goal partner for our U6 - U8 teams. They will also be the provider of the equipment we need for our coaching educa<on resources. Our con<nued partnership with the NSCAA is as strong as ever and is reflected in the growing number of courses we are offering through their organiza<on. We are lucky to be able to partner with them going forward. Affinity sports con<nues to be our registra<on service of choice and is a valued and cri<cal part to the success of soccer in the state. We are now registering over 50,000 members and are excited and reassured for the service and security that they provide. We are also happy to announce that our coaching educa<on opportuni<es have gone interna<onal. We will be announcing the details of our partnership with Cel<c Football Club in the coming months which give us a fantas<c opportunity to see how things are done on the other side of the pond. This is once again, a perfect example of how our associa<on is leading the way in coaching educa<on in the United States. As you can see, we have been extremely busy during the past year and have laid the groundwork for success and opportunity in 2016. We are extremely excited and honored that you are part of the ride. We have no inten<on, however, of sieng on our laurels this year and will con<nue to put the Oregon Youth Soccer Associa<on among the very best in the country.
