PROJECT S TATEMENT
DISPERSIN G & INTEGRATIN G FAIRFIELD HALL Since Fairfield hall shut its doors for its £30 million re-development in July 2016, Croydon has been left stripped of a significant venue for the performing arts and cultural activities. However, while the hall was open a larger issue was apparent, the location and program of the hall meant that almost all of Croydon’s cultural activities were sucked into a somewhat inaccessible establishment. Combined with an ageing demographic, the hall did little to improve day to day Croydon life. The concept of dispersing and integrating is a process to open up Fairfield hall to the whole city, moving art galleries to street corners and concert halls to the centre of town. This method would create easy access for Croydon residents to the rich culture that exists around the town, and also detract from the linear town plan of central shopping malls, meanwhile spreading out pedestrian access to result in a lively cultural hub. The project would further look to the numerous building sites around Croydon, and integrate these as a part of day-to-day living within the urban fabric.

S TABILIT Y OF INS TITUTION Fairfield Hall as it is today can be described as a very singular and enclosed institution - the events are centralised and extracted from the rest of the town. This reinforces the linear shape of Croydon adding to a void off the main road. This can start to be solved by creating alternative spatial organisations within Croydon, dispersing Fairfield’s program and creating new routes through the town. The question can be raised, is Fairfield as a singular institution still necessary in Croydon?

“When we were young there were so many live gigs, and much more of an opportunity to either go out at night, or do anything really”
“There is only one playground for children in the town, but all the parks are a little unsafe”
“Nearly everyone is worried that Fairfield won’t open again, and if not then that will be a real loss, and it really used to draw a crowd, whether it was in the cinema, a concert, one of those exhibitions”
“If it was down to me, I would knock Fairfield down”
Adam grew up in Croydon, but went to university in Birmingham
“I think Fairfield is something of the past - the best think that they could do is just knock it down and start over - it was only for the old people anyway” “For entertainment everyone goes out of town really, there are not enough venues for night-life here, there are literally two clubs, and so there is not much for the younger generations to do”

“Upstairs we have a little theatre and it does draw a crowd - we have a regular program of plays and comedies” “I would like to see more green spaces in the centre, the parks are quite far away and there aren’t many places to take small children”
“When the kids are out of school - that’s the real Croydon”
Darren & Mike were born and raised in Croydon Together they work for the council as a antisocial behaviour deterrent
“There is a lot of misplaced youth from the school kids going a little crazy, to teens with nothing to do” “There used to be this football tournament, with like 100 kids, which was great for the community, but it ended two years ago when the council cut it”

Bernard Tschumi The project was to create a space for activity and interaction that would evoke a sense of freedom within a superimposed organization He scattered 10 themed gardens throughout the 135 acre site. Organized spatially through a grid of 35 points, or what Tschumi calls follies, the repetitive nature was to allow visitors to retain a sense of place through the park. The follies intersect and lead to various points of interest within the park and the surrounding urban area. The use of having 35 points of interest within the park creates a desire to see each single one of these spaces. This is done by using the same colour and same structural contents throughout the park

A C U P U N C T U R E Using Architecture as an anchor for points around Croydon, the concept of acupuncture is to establish specific connected points that cause the most effect within their surrounding areas, from drawing together Martial Arts gyms to activating an otherwise unused street.
