KICK THE SUMMER DUST

Dusty days of Summer.

MY

last few weekend rides were a little dusty to say the least. We haven’t had much rain as of recent, and the forming dust clouds on the trails, proves that we need rain. What I really can’t believe is how many of people are still tasting the dirt and experiencing dry lips for days after the ride. That’s got to be an unpleasant experience… Why? As our summer season is beginning, I’d like to talk about, not eating dust. Riding is always better after it rains, or at the very least, first thing in the morning with the dew is still glistening. Old logging roads, abandon rail lines, etc. are a perfect place for an off-road dust storm and mid day, if you’re not prepared, you’ll end up biting off more then you’d want to chew. Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours on dusty trails compiling ideas on how to reduce eating and inhaling the dust, but somehow, my solution always

comes back to the 2001 movie with Jake Gyllenhaal, Bubble Boy. Basically wear a bubble while ridding. Anyway you slice it ridding in a dust cloud or watching Bubble Boy is just annoying and frustrating. It’s always interesting seeing guys kick things up a notch, for example; in my “usual” riding group, Matt, Pat and Darren, combined have enough tools that we could build a space shuttle in the woods if we needed to, yes equipped with cable TV and ice cold beer taps. Darren is the food guy; if we don’t stop at a burger shack or lodge somewhere he has us covered. Matt will always be so organized that he’ll have extra straps for everyone and everyone’s children and maybe children’s children. Pat’s the idea man, full of fun and adventure, the best bud a guy could ever have, pretty sure he carries rainbow smoke bombs in his back pocket. Me, I’m the gear and water

guy. I bring the three or four extra pairs of gloves just in case, goggles (a few times a year someone forgets or shows up with a junked out scratched up pair), rags, lip balm (sharing is not an option and I’ve watched grown men almost come to tears that have forgotten theirs on some rides.) There’s a venture for my little guy, I’m going to start buying a case and have my son sell it trail-side. Water too, you can’t be dehydrated out there, lake or pond water is not an option for anyone. On the dusty days of summer it seems like a lot of water is being used to wash faces, hands and necks too. Fact is, the number one item in your gear pack should be a facemask! I have been wearing a RZ Mask for years and it works. It keeps dust and airborne dirt out of my personal oxygen intake system. I’m not peeling dirt out of my nose with my finger wiping it on my pants, nor is my mouth or lips as dry. Enjoy the summer ride, there are a few brands to choose from and they’re all around $30. You don’t have to wear it daily or for the entire ride, put in your pack and use when you need it. A few people on our weekend warrior ride had masks but not all of us, there’s always next time. Now take it from us when we say, “Boys, Boys, Boys, get yourself a mask!” Until next time, if you’re heading out on the trail, be the considerate gear mule, pack extra water, goggles, lip balm and an extra mask.

ALONSO LOPEZ & #1949 GLAZZKRAFT RZR WINS BAJA 500 Alonso Lopez and his team won the UTV Pro “Naturally Aspirated” Class at this years grueling Baja 500. 115-120 degree heat couldn’t stop the Alba powered, GlazzKraft built RZR XP100. In fact the team started behind eight ball with a front differential gremlin causing them to start the infamous race with only 2wd. Alonzo and his team powered through the heat, kept there eyes on the prize and were able to win their first SCORE baja race.

POLARIS HELPS FORT MCMURRAY Polaris Industries Inc. announced the company has donated $10,000, through the Canadian Red Cross, plus the use of five Polaris RANGER®utility vehicles and Polaris Generators to help with the recovery efforts from the Fort McMurray massive wildfires. Owned by Gene Ouellette and operated by his 15-member staff, Four Seasons Power Sports suffered catastrophic and total loss. Ouellette’s team is determined to come back stronger. As part of their donation, Polaris also is asking employees in Canada and the U.S., dealers and their vendor community to donate funds to the effort through the Canadian Red Cross Polaris Microsite. The Canadian Government will match every dollar raised by the Canadian Red Cross.

POLARIS ANNOUNCES TWO NORTH AMERICAN CAMP RZR EVENTS CAN-AM RENEGADE X XC 1000R ATV PRO BRYAN BUCKHANNON WINS SNOWSHOE GNCC Bryan Buckhannon rode his Can-Am Renegade X xc 1000R to victory at a rain-soaked 2016 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country series race in Showshoe, W.Va. Can-Am X-Team teammate Kevin Cunningham joined Buckhannon on the class podium to expand his class points lead. Can-Am racers also notched two regional racing victories for the Can-Am X-Team. Despite the severe flooding, numerous road closures and a drenched course, round nine at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, known as “America’s Toughest Race,” was held as scheduled and lived up to its billing. Buckhannon, the defending class champion, posted his first 4x4 Pro class win of the year and also took the top spot on the 10 a.m. overall podium. In the last three rounds, Buckhannon has one win and two runner-ups to move into sole possession of fourth place. Cunningham earned a spot on both the morning and 4x4 Pro podiums. His third-place finish stretched his current class points lead to 24 going into the GNCC summer break. The GNCC series resumes September 10-11, in Unadilla, N.Y.

Polaris RZR® announced the continuation of two Camp RZR events in North America. Marking the fifth year of the event, this year’s Camp RZRs will be bigger and better than ever, and hosted at Jericho Mountain State Park in Berlin, N.H. and the Glamis Sand Dunes near Brawley, Calif. Known as a celebration of all things off-road, the first Camp RZR was held Dec. 31, 2012, in the Glamis Sand Dunes. The event was such a success it was repeated in 2013, over Halloween weekend, and every year since. In 2014, Camp RZR was expanded to the United Arab Emirates, followed by a third event in Tennessee. This year, the eastern Camp RZR moves to Jericho Mountain State Park. With more than 80 miles of trails within the park and more than 1,000 miles of interconnected trails in New Hampshire, Jericho Mountain State park is a popular offroad destination in New England, making it the perfect place to host Camp RZR. The western Camp RZR will continue to be hosted in the Glamis Sand Dunes which is a wildly popular, West Coast off-road destination. Both North American Camp RZRs will be bigger and better than ever featuring entertainment, hundreds of thousands of dollars in giveaways, vendors, a kids’ zone, and Polaris staff on hand to answer questions. Additional plans will be announced at a later date. Camp RZR New England will run September 23-24, and Camp RZR Glamis October 28-29. THE KIMPEX BRIDGE OPENS IN SEQUIN ONTARIO Every rider knows that bridges are the life-line of any trail system, but what most riders don’t know, is that the time, effort and cost involved to build one is a substantial undertaking. This past June the new Kimpex Bridge, name in part from the support of Kimpex Inc. in conjunction with Rosseau Road Powersports and Marine, was re-opened on the Sequin Trail to the delight of everyone that uses the trail system. The project was a joint effort between the South Sequin Snowmobile Club (SSSC) and the Parkto-Park Trail Association (P2P) as part of a larger $86,000 trail revitalization project which included culverts, gravel and reboarding a smaller 25ft bridge. The total cost was $35,000 with funding coming from several different sources. Peter Searle of the P2P Trail association states, “Funding came from Kimpex, South Sequin Snowmobile Club, Parry Sound Snowmobile District, Park-to-Park and the NTC. Major trails like the Sequin take a huge amount of time and dollars to try and maintain, our funding is never guaranteed.”

CAN-AM ATV AND SIDE-BY-SIDE VEHICLE RACERS EARN VICTORIES AT JOHN PENTON GNCC Can-Am X-Team racers put in a dominating performance at the John Penton Grand National Cross Country race in Millfield, Ohio, winning both the XC1 Pro UTV and 4x4 Pro classes. Can-Am Maverick side-by-side pilots swept both the UTV overall and XC1 Pro UTV class podiums, while Can-Am Renegade 1000R racers finished 1-2 in both the 4x4 Pro class and on the morning podium. Round seven of the GNCC ATV racing series, the 27th John Penton GNCC, also hosted round four of the six-round GNCC UTV racing schedule. The track offered a good mix of woods, mud and some motocross as well. More than 300 ATV racers took part in the 10 a.m. ATV session and another 89 racers competed in the UTV racing portion of the event. Defending, two-time XC1 Pro UTV champion Kyle Chaney (Can-Am / Chaney Racing / CT Race Worx) got back in the winner’s circle with an outstanding performance in his home state. Chaney, who was fourth after the first lap, made it to second by lap two. From there, he drove a smart race with his Can-Am Maverick 1000R side-by-side to notch win No. 2 on the year. Chaney is now second in the class points race. Tim Farr (JB Off-Road / Can-Am), who led the first two laps, finished second. The second straight runner-up finish has pushed Farr to third place in the points standings after four rounds. With his fourth consecutive XC1 Pro UTV class podium, Cody Miller (Can-Am / DWT / Houser Racing), now has a 31-point lead with two rounds remaining on the season. Can-Am pilot Steven Matko took fifth in his Offroad Motorsports-prepped Maverick.

CAN-AM RENEGADE X XC 1000R ATV PRO RACER WINS 2016 TOMAHAWK GNCC Can-Am X-Team racers Kevin Cunningham and Bryan Buckhannon finished first and second, respectively, at the 2016 Tomahawk Grand National Cross Country series race in Odessa, N.Y. Cunningham continued the Can-Am X-Team’s winning streak to six races in a row with his impressive victory. “Our racers have definitely found their groove, having won the last six 4x4 Pro class races,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “Kevin Cunningham continues to impress us with both his attitude and race-day approach. He has his Can-Am Renegade X xc 1000R ATV dialed in at every round and his current class points lead is indicative of that fact.” The 4x4 Pro class race at round eight came down to the wire as Cunningham and Buckhannon, the defending class champion, battled for the win and a spot on the 10 a.m. overall podium. Buckhannon led the first two laps before Cunningham took over the lead for the next two loops. On the fifth-and-final lap, Cunningham and Buckhannon swapped the lead, but Cunningham again found his way to the front and took the win by eight seconds. It was the third win and sixth podium of the year for Cunningham, who also finished third on the 10 a.m. overall podium. The Renegade 1000R ATV racer now owns a 16-point lead in the race for the 4x4 Pro class championship with five rounds remaining. Buckhannon’s second straight runner-up finish has pushed him to sixth in the class standings. Rob Smith was fifth on his Can-Am Renegade ATV.

NEWS POLARIS DEFENSE UNVEILS TURBO DIESEL MRZR Polaris Defense, a division of Polaris Industries Inc., announced the addition of a high-performance MRZR turbo diesel (MRZR-D) to its MRZR off-road vehicle lineup. MRZRs have redefined ultralight, off-road mobility for military vehicles and are mission critical for expeditionary forces in the U.S. and more than 20 allied countries to meet mission demands and threats while forward deployed. To be as expeditionary as the warfighters that use them, MRZR vehicles are V-22 helicopter transportable and can be configured a number of ways, including two-, four- and six-person. The turbo-charged diesel engine in the new MRZR-D has been engineered to meet the performance and physical specs of the original MRZR vehicles. While many key features – like the dimensions, payload, towing, ground clearance, accessories, handling and other features – remain the same, Polaris incorporated feedback from the field in the new product, including updated occupant seating space, ergonomics and sightlines. The win would continue Matlock’s perfect, historymaking streak in SCORE, four starts with four wins. Matlock’s strategy of running with the pace early and running hard for the last 100 miles if the race was tight worked flawlessly. Hindered by a bottleneck, he was able to break free and get the lead at mile-340 when he beat the leader out of the pits and ran hard to the finish. Finishing ten minutes behind him was Polaris Factory Racer Justin Lambert in the No. 2918 Cognito Motorsports Polaris RZR XP 1000 EPS. In the Pro UTV class, there would be four finishers out of 14 starters, all Polaris RZRs, with Polaris Factory Racer and Matlock’s wife, Kristen Matlock, taking third. This would be her first Baja 500 as a driver and would compete in Terry Hui’sRZR XP 1000 EPS that he and Wayne Matlock won the Baja 500, Imperial Valley 250 and Baja 1000 in last year.The next SCORE race is the Rosarito Beach Desert Challenge at Rosarito Beach, Baja California, Mexico, on Sept. 14-18.

“saving up” to have a baby. I then asked what exactly they meant, and it was exactly how it sounded. At the ঞme, they said that to have a baby was somewhere between $12,000.00 and $15,000.00 in medical expenses, and that was only if there were no complicaঞons. I shook my head while saying “WOW”, and said that the only thing my wife and I had to really decide when having a baby was if we were ready for the added responsibility. I had never really given health care a second thought before. I always just assumed healthcare was there and never thought about the costs. My point here is that this scenario exists in many aspects of our lives and in everything we do. Whether we pay out of our pocket or not, the costs do exist. So, a couple of weekends ago, my wife, my best friend and his wife decide to go for an ATV run on part of the Seguin Trail System, (just north of Huntsville) which we have never been on before. I did my research, found out we could park in Sprucedale, and where we could buy our trail passes. As I was approaching the store, located at the only gas staঞon in town, I was met by a couple of young men that said my Buddy and I didn’t need to purchase trail passes. I asked why not and they said because it was mostly on crown land. I then menঞoned that I volunteer with snowmobile clubs and ATV clubs and I know the costs associated with maintaining a trail in safe condiঞon, so I didn’t mind. I was then told that nobody buys a trail pass here because

rowing up in Canada, we tend to take many things for granted. Case in point: A few years ago, two of my three brothers and a few friends decided to take my youngest and 3rd brother to Cleveland for a weekend of baseball, and to take advantage of his final few days of being a bachelor. It was a great ঞme and Cleveland is an awesome host city anyঞme the Blue Jays are there playing the Indians. While siমng in the stands, I began to talk to a young man and his wife siমng next to me. The usual conversaঞon of the weather and the ball teams gave way to life in Canada verses the United States. Health care soon came up and I was very much surprized when they menঞoned they were currently

atvworld the trail was really rough. I responded…. you know what guys? Maybe if everyone that used the trail bought a trail pass, then there would be money to fix the trail. I said thanks and we proceeded to buy our day passes. A er ge ng unloaded and heading towards Parry Sound, about 10 kilometers into our venture, at a highway crossing, we were met by two OPP Officers who among other things, were defending themselves from a vicious onslaught of mosquitoes and blackflies. A er checking our licensing, insurance and iden fica on, they took the me to give us some direc ons and answer all the ques ons we had. Didn’t cost us a thing to have these guys out there, making sure everything was the way it should be. We then proceeded along the way for another 30 kilometers, enjoying the scenery, which included not only many lakes, ponds, rivers, creeks and waterfalls, but wildlife as well. We passed a mother bear with twin cubs, came across the largest black water snake I have seen in a while, a painted turtle laying eggs and its distant

cousin, a snapping turtle sunning itself. At this point, we were stopped by a Trail Warden, (a volunteer by the way) checking for trail passes. We shot the breeze with the Warden un l the bugs put the run on us. During our conversa on, the Trail Warden thanked us for buying trail passes and men oned how much his club appreciated it. He then proceeded to men oned how much money had been spent over the last couple of years on bridges and trail maintenance, and how much s ll had to be done. He also took the me to answer a few ques ons and we were on our way again. Most of the last 10 kilometers were smooth, tree canopied trails that I am sure doubled as camp/co age access roads as well. We then came out at the northbound Petro Canada Service Centre, located about 10 kilometers south of Parry Sound on Hwy 400. A er having lunch, (which cost more than the trail pass) we topped up our fuel tanks and headed back from where we came, Sprucedale. If you get a chance to take a run on this 50 kilometer por on of the Seguin Trail system, I highly recommend it. Here

is how we found the trail: About 50% of the trail was in good to really good shape, 30% would be classified as fair and the final 20% rough. The fair to rough secons helped me prove my jus fica on for the a ermarket suspension that I had convinced my wife would be just as much for her as it was for me. The trail is well marked, primarily built on an old railroad bed, well brushed, and there were no real sec ons you would consider sketchy, and all the bridges were 100%. The trip oneway, (approximately 50 km’s) took about 2 hours of actual driving me and wound close to the local communi es. It was in much be er condi on than I was first informed earlier in the day. I will do this ride again. Once reaching our vehicles in Sprucedale, we loaded our ATVs up and headed for home. It was a great day of memories with my wife and close friends, while never having to give a second thought that it was going to be anything but that. When planning this trip, I simply took for granted that everything would be the way it should be, and never really thought about everything behind the scenes that is always being done so that my day (and yours) will be awesome. Oh yes, I almost forgot………my trail pass was $23.00, taxes in!

With the help of so many clubs and the army of volunteers that work with in them, longer duration trips that snowmobilers used to enjoy are now becoming more accessible all over the province with trails intersecting. Although Paul and I trailered to Sprucedale for a single day excursion, we could have made this a couple day trip by leaving my front door and starting out on the Old Nipissing Trail. (I just don’t know if my 50+ year old bones could take it. lol)

1 Static Guard Dust Blocker

Household an -sta c spray like “Sta c Guard” will keep light dust from s cking to your goggle lens. We’ve found it to be especially effec ve with the shielded dual sport type helmets that many use for UTVs. Just spay the shield/lens and buff off with a so cloth. This also works well for Lexan UTV windshields.

2 Easy Alignment Dowel Removal

If you build your own engines, you’ve definitely ran into stubborn dowel pins that don’t want to break loose. Before crushing them with pliers or Visegrips, use your drill index to find a proper sized bit that can slip inside the dowel to keep it from crushing out of shape.

3 Proper Beadlock Assembly

Apply a li le an -seize to the threads of all your beadlock ring bolts as you assemble your wheels. While o en overlooked, this will help keep corrosion at bay, ensuring years of trouble free use.

4 Just Don’t Do It

While you may be tempted, never use an impact gun for an Allen or Torx bolt. By design, the impact gun jars the bit/socket back and forth and will quickly strip out an Allen or Torx bolt or bit.

5 DOT Tire Balance Dots

Some of the new larger DOT rated UTV res are now coming with a balancing dot. As with automo ve res, this is usually a yellow dot on the sidewall indica ng the lightest side of the re. The re should be mounted with the yellow dot clocked to the valve stem for the smoothest possible ride.

6 The Spongy Brake Blues

Cooked brake fluid doesn’t ever truly recover. If you’ve cooked your brakes to the point of fading, the “burnt” fluid will leave you with spongy brakes, even when cooled off. If your fluid is at all dark, you will need to purge it and completely replace it with the proper DOT 4 or 5 fluid. We’ve found a vacuum pump to be the quickest way to get out with the old and in with the new.

7 Bad Pads

If you got your brakes hot enough to cook the fluid, your pads might also be compromised. If the pad surface is glazed over or galled, you will need to replace them as well. The more aggressive you are on the brakes, the less likely your pads are to make it to their normal worn out spec.

UTV ROOF LINER INSTALL

A

roof is one of the first accessories many UTV owners will ever buy. While it is also a safety requirement for every racing organiza on we know, the number one reason is comfort through protec on from the elements. That same roof that provides shade from the summer sun will also help block rain, snow and flying mud in the winter months. Aluminum roofs are one of the most prac cal and func onal op ons, but you will no ce a fair amount of increased vibra on and other cab noise. The best way we’ve seen to quiet this is too wrap the underside in vinyl or carpet. We prefer a nice pliable vinyl and use 3m adhesive spray to a ach it permanently to the bo om of the roof for a dampening layer between the roof and the cab. This creates a headliner effect and dras cally knocks down vibra on, while also looking about as trick as it gets. We have also had good results pulling this same trick on the aluminum door panels that come with a ermarket doors, or a race cage.

We first remove our radio antenna with a wrench, and then pull all the Dzues buttons or bolts, and then remove the roof and lay it upside down on your work surface. Clean the underside of the roof; we just used a wet rag.

2 Roll your material out across the underside of the roof. You will then use scissors or a razor blade to cut the material down to a closer size. Be sure to leave yourself a little extra on all sides to account for any irregularities in the roof.

3 Start by folding back the material to the halfway point, then spray a nice even coat of 3M spray adhesive onto the roof. You will be gluing a small strip at a time- we do about 6-8 inches at a time. Let the glue tack up for about 30-45 seconds.

4 Start to roll the material into place over the glued section. We used a flat piece of plastic for a squeegee, but you can use a credit card or just about any other flat object. Work from the center out removing any wrinkles, air bubbles, or blemishes.


5 You might need a hair dryer or a heat gun for the tricky spots, depending on the material you chose and how flat your roof is. We used a little heat to really get a tight fit and stick with our bead rolled center and edges.

7 Use a fresh razor blade to trim off the excess material from all the way around the roof. Be careful in the corners, you might need a little extra pressure to get them to really stick down.

9 The completed roof should be smooth and follow every contour of your roof. Be sure the liner is fully adhered, especially in the corners and with any bends or contours the roof might have.

6 Continue evenly spraying, and sticking the material in 6-inch strips until you reach the end, then start back in the center and work out to the other end. When completed, be sure you don’t have any wrinkles or bubbles. If you do, try using heat to work them out.

8 Locate all the mounting holes and cut them out with your razor. We like to slice an x in them and then cut out the circle. Be sure to also get any holes used for accessories as well.

10 Re-install the roof. Place the roof back on the car and attach it with the Dzues buttons or mounting bolts. Re-install your antenna or any other accessories that you removed, and you are now ready for a rattle free ride. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 2

Downhill combines the thrill and excitement of flying through the trees with banked turns, and both natural and man-made jumps. Core enthusiasts have taken to ski resorts in the summer ঞme, using li[s for a lazy man’s trip to the top. Without ski li[s, downhillers are forced to truly work for their reward, with ঞme consuming and calorie burning pre-climbs.

ountain bike Ski-Li s are limited to the off-season at select resorts, but what if you could build an over the top, capable vehicle to transport you and your bike to the top of your trail system. What’s more, what about an over the top, capable vehicle that could take you, your buddies, and your bikes to the top of epic ride spots with ease, comfort and style. This was the ques on DWT’s new marke ng manager Wes Miller had for us when describing his latest RZR Turbo build. Wes himself is no stranger to ac on sports, as he spent the be er part of his life racing ATVs, and then showcasing the en re lifestyle with his Huevos Grandes movie series. As most old ATV Racers seem to be doing, Wes has recently jumped ship over to the UTV side, and has been racing a Polaris RZR in the BITD and SCORE Desert series. Besides the lifelong addic on to Powersports, Wes has spent the rest of his free- me Surfing, Snowboarding, and as of lately Mountain Biking. Drawn more to the excitement and rush of Downhill type riding, it wasn’t long before he was brainstorming a way to get more speed runs in on his trips to the trails. A four seat RZR seemed like the perfect pla orm, and with comfort, style, and flat out extreme terrain ability as a factor, Polaris’ latest RZR XP Turbo four seemed

to fit the bill. Star ng with a double throw me down, 140hp XP Turbo 4 meant that Wes could really concentrate his build on trail luxuries, style, and making it full on bullet proof for miles and miles of service. When it came me to build the dream Downhill vehicle, Wes turned to a few key people and companies that he has worked with on past race builds. The idea was to debut the build in Moab, UT at the Rally on The Rocks Event. By the me he took possession of the car and started ge ng parts in order, it was already ge ng down

ute Any custom build to the last minute. build, bolt on or not, always ends up with a lot of last minute mods, changes, etc., and Glazzkra ’s Hector Jimenez is no stranger to the last minute thrash of building or prepping race cars. Wes passed the torch on a big chunk of the assembly and overall building to Hector and his boys. The car would be ge ng Pro Armors bolt-on Asylum cage system, Roof, and Stealth door skins. Pro Armor also supplied a front bumper, G2 Seats, harnesses, and front/rear kneepad storage bags.

Getting to the top is half the fun Glazzkra installed all the Pro Armor stuff along with their “Vortex” Fiberglass body kit and custom RZR Dash. With the base of the car assembled, Hector designed and applied a custom blue and white paint scheme, reminiscent of the OG DWT logo and Colorways. Once the body was in order, Glazzkra went to work fabrica ng a full custom bike rack. With 140hp and 17 inches of wheel travel, your average back of the minivan bike rack was not going to cut it. With nothing short of the best materials, Hector designed, built, and installed a Chromoly bike transport rack that would safely & securely hold any size bikes through the roughest of terrain.

Not wan ng to ever be le stranded on the trail, and looking for the ul mate in durability, Wes opted for some heavy-duty radius rods and Turret style e rods from Assault Industries. Assault also supplied some of their kick ass UTV side mirrors and a bag of other billet goodies, including their steering wheel and moun ng hub. Another no-compromise area on this adventure build is the wheels and res. Wes went with 30x10-14 8 ply Moja-V res and DWT’s new Stealth-Lok Beadlock wheels. The new DOT rated Moja-V is a super tough, hard terrain re that is actually proving to be pre y good in a variety of terrain. The Moja-V’s tread pa ern and rubber compound are both designed

for extended life expectancy, and Wes’s set s ll looks very close to new, with well over 500 miles on them. The Stealth-Lok Wheel is a more affordable cast version of the billet Sector beadlock. In fact, at just less than $200 apiece, they can be had for about half the price of the higher priced Sectors. While flats are very unlikely with an 8-ply re like the Moja-V, Wes installed a fi h one with a Cage WRX spare re and jack carrier. Underbelly protec on is ever important when driving in Rocky places like Moab and Sedona, especially on the longer 4 seat chassis. Wes installed Factory UTV’s heavy-duty 3/8 inch thick UHMW skid plate. The UHMW is a space age plas c-

With durability covered, Wes turned to Kicker for a super clean audio package. like material that will not puncture, and glides over rocks and other obstacles with ease. UHMW has become increasingly popular for extreme duty skid plates as it is lighter, more durable, and quieter than aluminum. Axles were another key durability issue that needed to be addressed, and Josh over at CryoHeat has all the answers. Cryoheat is a process that freezes metal parts to an extremely low temperature, which completely realigns the molecular structure, crea ng a harder and stronger metal. The parts are then micro-polished

to an ultra-fine finish for reduced fric on and heat. The CVs and Axles from any vehicle can benefit from this, as can a mul tude of other hi-stress metal and aluminum parts. The stock intake system has proven to be pre y adequate, but the stock filter is not serviceable and will clog up fairly fast when riding in groups or extreme dust. We went with a completely serviceable K&N filter/Pre-filter and then installed one of the new S&B Filters par cle separators to push service intervals even further. The par cle separator uses a mechanical turbine type set-up to knock out larger dirt par cles before they ever make it to your air cleaner. With durability covered, Wes turned to Kicker for a super clean audio package. They installed a PXiBT50.2 Stereo, which is an amplifier controller with Bluetooth. The PS44 coaxial speakers are housed in Kicker’s cage mount pod enclosures, similar to what you would see on a Wakeboard boat, and let me tell you, it screams

when you lay into it. Best of all, the pod enclosures really project the sound, so it makes for the perfect party sta on when you get to where you’re going. As with any UTV build, a proper communica ons system makes all the difference when out on the trail with friends. We installed a 4 person version of the same Rugged Radios set-up we used on our Mint 400 race car. The RR660 4-Person system intercom allows crisp communica on between all four passengers, and then it integrates with a 50-wa radio for car-to-car communica on. To finalize the build, Wes installed IMS’s auxiliary tank for an extra five gallons of fuel capacity, and then had FOX Shox install a stage 2-spring upgrade kit. The stage 2 upgrade converts the OEM FOX shocks into a true dual-rate set-up with adjustable crossovers. The new set-up also compensates really well for the addi onal weight of all the accessories and bikes it will carry.

As to be expected, the last of the build took a full week-long thrash to get ready for Rally on the Rocks. In typical racer fashion, Wes and Hector pulled a few long ones and one final all-nighter before heading straight to Moab for the first day of the event. The final product turned out amazing, the paint scheme was on point, the stereo jammed, and it was me for a week of trail excursions and of course, some serious downhill mountain biking. Intense Cycles capped off one of the baddest builds in Moab with an amazing downhill bike. The full carbon frame features 130mm of plush travel, 29-inch Swiss Carbon wheels, and a full line of top of the line components. The DWT build spent hours upon hours shu ling riders to higher eleva ons, but it proved to be just as fun for the driver who had to chase them back to the bo om.

his past spring, the crew from Argo invited us to experience their latest off-road crea on and in the ma er of one a ernoon, our preconceived no ons of off-road capable was severely bruised and ba ered. Truth is, you haven’t experienced extreme off-road un l you’ve ridden an Argo. If the name sounds foreign to you, most likely the vehicle isn’t. The company recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, making it one of the oldest and longest standing recrea onal vehicle manufacturers in the world. During that span, the company has stood steadfast to their extreme off-road concepts by building a vehicle that from the onset looks very similar to the one they first introduced in 1967, but has con nually pushed the boundaries of taking you places that others simply can’t. Despite having the opportunity to ride just about every kind and type of recrea onal vehicle on the market over the past 25 years, throwing a leg over the fully amphibious sidewall of an ARGO was new to me. I’d seen them from me to me, o en in use by the likes of forest management teams, hydro-line crews, or

search and rescue opera ons. Those work applica ons, along with hun ng outfi ers has been the primary market for the 6 or 8-wheeled vehicles, but over the past few years the crew from New Hamburg, Ontario has been hard at it, pu ng the finishing touches on a new line of Argo vehicles, with an eye towards recrea on. The new LX-Series is the first step in that direc on, an Argo with more features, more luxury, and improved ergonomics. Available in a price-point six-wheeled version, and full featured eight-wheeled version in five color combina ons, the Argo LX looks to capture the imagina on and a en on of hard-core recrea onalists who crave access to extremely remote areas. It’s the amphibious nature of an Argo that really differen ates it from every other off-road vehicle. The one piece, sealed bo om hull and the all-wheel drive system, with unique re tread pa ern, propels the vehicle across water. We’re not talking mud puddles here kids…nope, more like swamps, lakes or rivers. While the Argo won’t set any nau cal speed records, with a very modest top speed of 3mph on water, its very ability to float and navigate across open water makes it not only different, but superior to every other vehicle when it comes to accessing remote areas.

A simple twist of the handlebar controls applies braking forces to the inside set of wheels, and thereby turning the vehicle… In many ways the Argo is very simplis c in design, with a choice of two Kohler engines (30-horsepower liquid-cooled or 23-horsepower air-cooled) to provide power to the all-wheel drive system of the LX. Delivering the power to the wheels and providing skid-steer type maneuverability is a unique transmission, developed and manufactured by Argo’s parent company – Ontario Drive and Gear (ODG). A simple twist of the handlebar controls applies braking forces to the inside set of wheels, and thereby turning the vehicle…yes just like a tank, but without the tracks (although Argo does offer accessory tracks to deliver even more extreme terrain capabili es with less environmental impact).

Rethink the Ride For many of us, off-road riding is all about the trails. Sure some of those trails are strewn with obstacles including rocks, downed trees, mud bogs and steep climbs, but they’re s ll trails and when the trail ends, so too does the ride. To fully comprehend and appreciate the ability of an Argo however, the ride actually starts where the trail ends. According to the Argo crew, the new LX-Series has been blessed with more top speed, which in terms of extreme off-road riding is about 25mph (40kmh)…a land speed se er it’s not. But the Argo is not about speed, cat like reflexes or big suspensions. The lowpressure res supply the la er, and the new LX-Series features dual bead-lock rims and ultra-low pressure res for a so er ride compared to previous models. Once you wrap your head around the no on that the Argo is not necessarily a trail machine, a new world of off-road

The result is a vehicle that is easier to access, has more comfortable sea ng, and boasts a long list of standard features that are o en deemed accessories on more tradi onal vehicles. With burly wraparound bumpers, high intensity ligh ng, 3,500lb WARN winch, and a premium, four-speaker Jensen stereo system with Bluetooth® connec vity highlight the goodness. A er spending the be er part of a day ge ng be er acquainted with the latest Argo offerings, including their fully equipped hun ng focused models, (Argo Outfi er and Argo Scout) it became easy to understand why outfi ers and work crews who need to access deep, backcountry regions have been relying on the Argo for the past 30 years. Now the LX-Series, with an eye on added luxury, will have recrea onalists with an adventure for the unknown considering it as well.

The amphibious design of the Argo delivers more than just open water transportation. The high seating position and fully-enclosed sidewalls also offers up ample protection from mud, water and debris from lesser obstacles. So much so that these folks went for a ride in full business casual…don’t want to be late for that business lunch!

The amphibious design requires the full undercarriage to be enclosed; this creates a full-length skid plate that allows the vehicle to traverse big obstacles by “sliding” up and over them. With all eight wheels putting power to the ground, there’s little that can stop it.

Our Texas hill country ride location was perfect for testing the Argo. A military training base featured a variety of terrain including a small lake where we could dive right in.

A front mounted 3,500lb WARN winch comes standard on the new LX models. However, after experiencing the sheer capability of an Argo, we can hardly imagine where one would be needed.

The white plastic at the top of this photo is the fuel tank, which holds a whopping 7.1 gallons (27 litres). Underneath, the plastic floor liner you’ll find access to the drivetrain and key service points. The entire cavity is sealed and features an on-board bilge pump to expunge water that may still get in.

The entire concept of the Argo will force you to rethink how you tackle off-road terrain. Where other vehicles rely on big travel suspension to navigate big terrain, the Argo’s eight wheel drive system and full-skid plate refuses to become high-centered, and the more we pushed the limits, the more it continued to impress.

No it’s not sinking, the Argo sits low in open water, allowing the wheels to gain maximum thrust. While no speedster on open water, it gets the job done. After a few hours, our confidence grew and we charged headlong into a nearby lake without hesitation. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 13 • ISSUE 2

Rally on the Rocks (ROTR) is the annual event for UTV riders to experience this incredible playground and its hundreds of miles of dedicated trails. There are approximately 15 different offial trail rides to choose from each day at ROTR, ranging from fairly easy-going stuff to some of the gnarliest rock-crawling routes you’ll find anywhere

in the world. No matter your skill level, ROTR has plenty of options that will thrill and reward you with challanging terrain and jaw-dropping beauty. You can ride Moab nearly year-round, but ROTR is the perfect opportunity for UTV/ATV riders as the the town goes the extra mile to roll out the red carpet for us.

An example of the red carpet treatement: Every morning during the rally, groups line up in a staging area to experience one of the many rides on tap for the day. Once lined up, a police escort is given (on the highway and town roads!) to get to and from certain trail heads. That’s so dang cool!

The first off-road company to offer Virtual Reality experiences for its products, Arctic Cat unveiled a new VR UTV session just in time for Moab. This is a REALLY cool technology that gives users an interactive experience of “riding” snowmobiles and UTVs. The program launched this spring and an increasing number of Cat dealerships will offer VR at their stores. Definitely something to check out.

My trip to Moab also included a day on the Behind the Rocks trail, which was another perfect example of the greatness that Moab offers.

PADDLE SHIFTING YXZ Conঞnuing to innovate and impress, the new 2017 YXZ1000R SS (Sport Shi[) combines pure-sport driving performance with a high-tech paddle shi[ing experience. Yamaha has kept the impressive 998cc triple and its unparalleled direct connecঞon feeling, but eliminated the need for a clutch pedal. The confidence-inspiring Sport Shi[ transmission is sঞll a 5-speed sequenঞal shi[ manual, but its automaঞc clutch and paddle shi[ers will keep your hands on the wheel and your foot on the gas while shi[ing. The YXZ100R SS paddle shi[ers are mounted to the steering column and synched to the Yamaha Chip Controlled Shi[ technology. The (YCC-S) is an advanced automaঞc clutch system that eliminates the need for a clutch pedal, while sঞll providing a pure-sport driving experience with the direct connecঞon of a manual transmission SxS. Shi[ing is kept simple, yet intuiঞve for drivers, even if not familiar with operaঞng a manual transmission. The sequence is shi[ up with the right paddle and down with the le[ paddle. Increasing the Pure Sport experience, the Yamaha paddle shi[er system goes beyond the everyday automobile paddle system with features like auto downshi[ and an allnew “Launch System”. The auto downshi[ feature assists by downshi[ing to first gear anyঞme the vehicle comes to a stop, regardless of whether the driver does or not. It is described as very similar to “dropping the clutch” in a manual vehicle with a clutch pedal or lever on an ATV. Over 35 riders took part in the 7th Annual TraX4 Breast Cancer ATV ride. At the end of the day the group returned back to resort for Friday Night Fun Night Game night hosted by Grand Tappattoo Resort and Applause Party Rentals. Mini putt and plinko were a few of the games that were a hit. The

group also enjoyed air archery sponsored by Cabela’s. Saturday morning the participants departed the resort and headed to the beautiful Canadian Shield to ride the exclusive private trail system offered by Bear Claw Tours. Riders were challenged by every terrain possible from mud, to rocks and even a little bit of snow, ensuring that a fun time was had by all. Goodbye Old Friend

With the factory paint still smoldering on the exhaust, our 2104 Browning Edition Ranger XP saw blood on its first trip, as my father-in-law and his wife took the vehicle on a successful deer hunt in northern Minnesota.

W

ith one last tug, the final bolt came free along with a smattering of dirt and rocks that were dislodged in the process. As I removed the bracket and placed it in the pile of other bits and pieces associated with the plow attachment, I stepped back and gave the camouflage dressed Ranger a final once over. It had been an excellent vehicle…ranked at or near the very top of the long list of vehicles I’ve had the opportunity to test over the past 20-years, and sadly, it was time to let her go.

It’s a recurring cycle as a media guy; become associated with a vehicle, discover its quirks, tendencies and virtues, and then send it on down the road. I know what you’re thinking…tough gig, where do I sign up? Granted, it is sweet to have the opportunity to sample and test a host of new ATVs and side-by-sides each season, it’s one of those perks of the job. Career perks aside, as I loaded the Ranger XP onto the trailer to make the short trip to my local dealer, I realized this vehicle was different. Until the Ranger came into my personal arsenal of loaner vehicles, I always gravitated towards the “sport” side of product offerings. Be it snowmobiles, motorcycles, ATVs or side-by-sides, like any red-blooded, fuel and octane inspired man, I was enamored by the race inspired, go fast, high-performance side of things. I mean if you had a choice, would you rent the Dodge Hellcat or the minivan…nuff said. While many will argue the Polaris Ranger and other vehicles like it might not be as dull or mundane as a minivan, it most certainly isn’t a sports car either. Despite having a penchant for the sportier side of things, I quickly came to appreciate the Ranger and everything it could do beyond the trail. From deer hunting in the fall, to ice fishing in the winter, and perhaps most importantly, becoming an integral tool around our home where yard and shop projects seem to never end. Since the Ranger has left, (and been replaced by a new Polaris General) I’ve found myself missing my old friend on more than

one occasion. Be it black dirt to be moved, gathering firewood for a family bonfire, or simply going to the end of the lane way to get the mail, (all things the General is capable of performing mind you) the Ranger had found a way to creep into my daily routine. I’m often asked by those outside of powersports,”What makes the off-road category so successful?” I’m always quick to point out the versatility of side-by-side vehicles in particular as having played a major role in the homerun success for companies like Polaris over the past 10 years. It’s a machine that is family friendly, and is equally at home on the trail as it is on the farm. Growing up on a farm, the idea of a utility vehicle certainly wasn’t foreign to me. The Ranger XP and other vehicles like it have become wildly successful for their ability to work just as hard, if not harder, than they can play. While many of us in the media, including myself, would often nod in agreement as any given manufacturer would praise the virtues of a new utility vehicle, life with the Ranger for the past two years has me nodding with a new found appreciation and understanding. Surely more loaner vehicles will come and go from our ATV World shop in the coming years. Already we’ve taken a liking to the new Polaris General, but every once in a while a vehicle comes along that truly stands out…The Ranger XP was one of them.

After building a new home and shop on acreage, we had plenty of projects where the Ranger was put to work. From preparing the shop floor for concrete and burying drain tile around the house, to finishing a retaining wall and moving black dirt for a garden, the Ranger became an invaluable weekend tool for me and my neighbor.
