akes and ponds are tightening up, the snow has been accumulating in many parts, and the groomers are keeping busy. OSM has attended everything snowmobile this fall, and the enthusiasm for the upcoming season has been incredible. We met with many North American dealers this fall, and it was absolutely remarkable how well they’re all doing. Dealers seemed to be overwhelmed at the hype and excitement from their customers this past December. With this early snowfall and cold temps, you can’t help but be excited for sledding. If you haven’t already planned a ride this year, or are wondering where to go or where to ride, this edition of OSM is a great starting point when planning your winter. We enjoyed quite a few incredible rides last year that

you’ll read about in this issue, the OSM Travel Guide and Trail Atlas. If you’re considering trying a new trail system or a new area this season, maybe new trails and new hospitalities, we hope this book will assist you in planning your adventures. you have done a lot of travel snowmobiling and think you have seen it all, then maybe you need to add Eeyou Istchee Baie-James to your snowmobiler bucket list. The region is located North of the 49° parallel and boasts over 1100kms of perfectly maintained trails that takes you through some remote areas of Quebec’s north, and truly makes you feel like you are on an adventure. Eeyou Istchee Baie-James is a true big mile trip where you are going to see some epic vistas, hammer down on some fast doublewide trails, meet some amazing people, and take in some of Canada’s Cree Heritage if you choose. YOU ARE GOING TO FALL IN LOVE WITH TRAIL 93

hen OSM got the call from our friend Steven Pomerleau, from the offices of Tourisme BaieJames & Eeyou Istchee Tourism, to see if we would be interested in joining him on a three day ride through the region that would have us start in Oujé-Bougoumou and end up at one of Canada’s largest snowmobile cross-country races, The Festival Folifrets which was celebrating it’s 50th year running, the answer as you could imagine was a resounding YES! Known in the race community as simply “Chibougamau”, the race attracts some of the most hardcore Cross Country racers, and pits man against machine in a 345km race through the boreal forest. Being it was the 50th year, and there was also a chance that the festival was going to break a Guinness world record for the largest collection of vintage snowmobiles in one parade with the Presidents Ride, it only made sense that OSM was going to there. Choosing the OSM crew members that would make the trip was an easy

decision. We would put the “band back together” and take the same crew that had been part of a 2014 trip into the region. It was made up of myself, Darren (Desi) Desautels, Steve (Fluffy) Hannah and Bruce (Brucie) Roulston. We knew our sleds for this adventure needed to have the big horsepower required to ride the big kilometers in Eeyou Istchee Baie-James, so we loaded the trailer with our 2016 Yamaha ViperSR, the 2016 Ski-Doo XRS, the 2016 Arctic Cat XF 8000, (compliments of Country Corners) and the 2016 Polaris ProS 800 (compliments of Edge Performance). To begin, the drive to the region is about 12 hours from the Toronto Area. The best route to take is to drive through North Bay and continue north toward Kirkland Lake. This will take you towards New Liskard, and then follow the route to Notre-Dame-du-Nord where you will cross into the province of Quebec. While in Quebec, the route will take you along the 117hwy towards Val-d’or, and onwards

onsnow to Oujé-Bougoumou. While in Val-d’or you will have the option to take Hwy 397 north, which looks like it cuts about 30mins off the drive, but trust us, do not take that highway. The 397 highway turns into what can only be described as an unpaved cottage road that lasts over 100kms. It is a stick hauler (forestry trucks) access road and is not really fun to be on in the middle of the winter. We wish we had this information before, but are happy to share it with you now. We also got stopped for 10mins by a grumpy moose who had no desire to get out of the middle of the road. This is when you know you have reached the great white north. After that, the highways again become paved and smooth and we made our way to the Capissisit Lodge, which would be home for truck and trailer and our first night’s accommodation. The Capissisit Lodge is located in the newest Cree community on the shores of Lake Opemisca, and was recently renovated with over a million dollars in upgrades. The rooms and common areas are really nice, and you immediately feel the Cree heritage when you step inside. A traveler’s note; the Oujé-Bougoumou is a community that is not open late, and does not have traditional restaurants and bars. You will need to stop in Amos beforehand, and load up on any beverages and snacks that you may want for the evening. The rooms are very modern and clean and the lodge offers a huge parking lot, (with cameras) so trailer parking is not an issue. After the 12 hour drive and a few cocktails in the room, it was off to bed for an early rise to start the adventure.

DAY 1

The first day has us up early and eating breakfast in the lodge’s amazing restaurant. The breakfast was over the top, and well appreciated to get us fueled up and ready to ride. We would meet up with Steven here at the lodge and be hitting the trails around 9:00am. The trail runs directly through the Capissisit Lodge parking lot and it’s a quick 23 km burn down to Chapais, where you can gas up and then hook up to trail 93 towards Lebel-surQuévillon, (LSQ) and this is where the fun really begins. The 93 between Chapais and LSQ is really fast, wide open riding that takes you through some amazing vistas and elevation changes. The trail also has some sections that have those really fast, sweeping corners through the woods and that’s about it. You start to notice that you are in the remote wilderness when you realize there is nothing between Chapais and your first gas stop in Desmaraisville, so gas management comes into play, and you need to watch the throttle finger. Sure, you are going to be tempted to squeeze that throttle because the trails allow for it, but you also need to make 150km to the gas stop, which is doable on most newer sleds, but not if you’re heavy on the throttle. After gassing up, we made our way to LSQ, where we would stop for lunch at a

great little place called the Restaurant O P C. The food was home cooked goodness, and the place was filled with locals, so you know you are in the right place to eat. After lunch, our next adventure was to head north on trail 396, and make our way to Matagami for the first night on the trail. The trail up to Matagami is a whole lot of fun if you are into fast corner to corner

onsnow riding. It goes without saying that the trails were groomed flat, and the signage was really good, but the biggest smiles we had as a group was riding up to Matagami. You are going to ride more than 132kms after lunch, so plan on getting to your hotel just as the darkness is settling in and the temp drops. Matagami is a town that is completely setup for snowmobilers. The trail takes you right into town, and the first stop is the Shell gas station, where you can refuel the sleds for the night (we all know the rule, never put sleds to bed empty) and stock up on some beverages to go in the fridge for the après story telling that is about to go down, after the first day out on the trails.

We checked into the Matagami Hotel, which has one of the best snowmobile deals this traveler has ever come across. For only $95.00 per person, the offer gets you a room with a buddy, (double/double) and a full dinner in the restaurant attached to the hotel. The meal itself is really good food, and includes your choice of a full entree, a beer, (how civilized is that) soup and desert. The deal is so tailored to snowmobilers that they even say right at the beginning of the service that it also includes tip, because you are not paying for the dinner when you have it, so you may not have any small bills to try and tip, they just include it. It is a no-brainer, easy meal with great food and cold beer.

The second day had us up early and spinning tracks by 8:30am. The goal for today was to make it back to Lebel-sur-Quévillion, the town where we stopped for the lunch the day before, with a lunch stop in Amos. The route would take us back down south out of Matagami, on the 396 the west side. The first portion of the trail was a bunch of fun, with really fast, twisty swoopers that just made you giggle like a school girl in your helmet. There was quite a few elevation changes, and keeping the speed up was really simple. After a brief stop at the warm up shack, things got really fun. The second part of the 396 south was a hydro corridor that had views as far as the eye can see, and those tummy tickler hills that you can hit at speed, and just float down the back side. This is one of those trails that you just want to turn around and do again, but seeing that again, we had over 160km between gas stops, unless you are packing extra fuel, there is no turning back. By the time you get to St-Dominique-du-Rosair, which is only 25km to Amos, you are staring pretty hard at the gas gauge. After the fuel stop, it’s a straight shot into Amos for lunch. The town of Amos is actually in a different region in Quebec, a region that is also a favorite to OSM, and that is Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Seeing as how we know the snowmobile guru from the Abitibi-Témiscamingue tourism office,

Guillaume Travert, we reached out and asked his opinion where the best place to stop for the lunch was and he suggested The Hotel Esker in Amos. Once again, our friend Guillaume did not let us down. To find the hotel when you get into Amos from the 396, you will see a local trail down the river in Amos. The trail is well used, so you know it is safe, and when you get to the second bridge, you will see a small trail up the side of the bank. That will pop you out in the Hotel Esker parking lot. This is one of those places that makes you glad you asked a local, because the food is amazing and it’s set up in a high-end buffet style, so you can eat when you want and try several different things. A travelers note; this would be a great place to stay if you are in the region on an overnight. The selection of beer on hand at the Hotel Esker is shocking, and you can just tell it would be a fun place at night. Seeing how we still had 200kms to put down

after lunch, it was coffee and water for this crew, but we made a mental note to return to the Hotel Esker. From Amos, you find yourself back on Trail 93, and again you will be smiling in your helmet. You will find yourself in some twisty, wooded areas that pop out onto the pole lines, and then back into the woods. With only 100kms to the gas stop in Senneterre, you’re not too concerned about the fuel, so you can squeeze that throttle a little more. After a quick fuel stop, you are a straight shot back to LSQ, where you will be spending the night at the Motel Du Lac. Again, you will be getting in just as the sun is setting, and right before the mercury drops, so that’s why you plan an early departure the next morning from Matagami. As you take the 93 into town, you immediately find a gas station right off the trail, so there’s a quick fuel up, and conveniently, there’s also a beverage store where you can grab a few cold ones for the room when you get to the Motel Du Lac. For dinner we decided to grab a seven-dollar cab ride from the Motel to the place we had lunch, the OPC Deli, because we knew the food was good and the people are great.

DAY 3

The third and final day of our adventure through Eeyou Istchee BaieJames region had us heading back along the 93 to get back to our truck and trailer, and eventually make our way to Chibougamau, where we would take in the festival as a perfect closer to the perfect adventure trip. I know there is a feeling among the snowmobile community that you hate to do the same trail twice, but trust me when I say that the 93 is such a good trail, that you will have no issues riding this trail twice, and you truly feel like you are the only ones out on the trail. This is a good time to discuss a weird phenomenon that takes place in the region that we noticed, and have discussed frequently when stopped. When you are out on the trails, it is very rare to run into another group of sledders. However, when you enter into the towns and gas stations, they are filled with snowmobiles. “Where do all these people come from?” was asked a lot. The trails spread groups out, and you never get the impression you are riding on top of another group. Anyone who has rode on a Saturday in Muskoka Ontario, knows exactly what we are referring to. After a great run back up the 93, we stopped in Chapais at the local snowmobile clubhouse for lunch. Yes, you read that

right; the Club Motoneige du Chapais is a fully working clubhouse that has some the best home cooked food you will find out on any trail. Bold statement I know, but the club members take the clubhouse very seriously, and you just know that this is the heart of the region for a meeting place for snowmobilers. Travelers note; order the poutine. After lunch we had a short ride back to where we had left our truck and

trailer, as it was time to load back up and drive into Chibougamau to take in the festival, and see some really good cross country racing. Not wanting the trip to end, a few members asked if they could skip loading the truck and trailer, and ride into Chibougamau, and meet the truck at the hotel. After some heavy negotiations as to who would drive truck and who will ride, it was decided that Desi and Brucie would be the rock stars and ride, and Fluffy and I would drive chase truck and meet them at the hotel. The Hotel Chibougamau is where to stay when you get there. It is set up for sledders and even has a compound for sled parking that gets locked overnight. That is a warm blanket for anyone who has spent time on overnight sled trips. It actually helps this guy sleep a little sounder. The rooms are average and comfortable, with enough room for two guys and gear to share a room, and a quick walk down the street gets you to the Pub which has amazing food, cold local beers, and a

really talented wait staff. The scene at the pub this night was all about the big crosscountry race the next day, and this was why we were here this weekend. After logging over 1000km in three days in the region, we all had to admit that we were sad that it was over. Spending the morning taking in The Festival Folifrets that completely takes over the town of Chibougamau, you really get the feeling you are in a community of like-minded snowmobilers, and just being a part of the festival makes you feel at home. It is nothing that you would imagine a sled fest would be; it literally takes over the town. If you have plans to come and ride the adventure of what is the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James area, be prepared to discover some amazing trails, ride wide open terrain, and meet some amazing people. And if you are planning a trip, we highly suggest you check the dates of the festival and book your trip around that weekend. You will not be disappointed.

all of us die hard sled heads dream all summer of what Mother Nature will deliver to us for the upcoming season. We all cross our fingers in hopes of another blessed year of white precipitation that blankets our favourite riding playgrounds. 2016 was not one of those years as we all know. …Ontario, New Brunswick and Québec all experienced well below normal snow falls, and left most of us wondering where to plan our next weekend ride, to scratch the itch we all craved for months in the off season. We at OSM are like everyone else, we are always looking for snow and waiting for huge amounts of it. Watching the weather channel became more of an addiction in 2016 than I can ever remember, looking at the long range forecast to see who had, and who was getting dumped on. Our annual Gaspé visit was fast approaching, and of course there was snow in their region, but with the ever changing

coastal climate, we were wondering if our 7th year tour ride of the Gaspésie peninsula was actually going to happen. I made my usual call to Zoé at the Québec Maritime tourism office, and she set us up again with some awesome lodging and suggested trails for our Interior and coastal ride, to begin on February 15, 2016. Having 2000+ kms of trails in the Gaspé Peninsula, their tourism structure in the winter months is completely geared towards the snowmobiler, and providing the best possible experience that one could hope for. There are lots of spectacular hotels and lodging in almost every town, with plenty of fuel stops along the way, and there’s no shortage of OEM sled dealers if you happen to need a repair. If riding from destination to destination is not your bag, the Gaspé region also offers some of the best off trail riding in eastern Canada. A quick look on YouTube on your smart phone or tablet will back my statement up, and show you what I am talking about.

onsnow This winter wonderland has breathtaking views that make all sledders stop and get the camera out for some take home memories. Now, with our Itinerary in hand confirmed for four days of riding trail 5, and the interior trails 595 and 597, we had full hopes that Mother Nature was going to cooperate for our tour. This was shaping up for a great mid-February ride, in one of our preferred winter spots. Riding with me on this tour, and no strangers to Gaspé, was our back up camera man Jamie Colvin, Cory “Roller” Manion from Ardock, and Wayne “Wobblie” Evans from parts unknown. The truck was set and pointed east for a 13 hour pull to Matane, to stay at one of our favorite Québec stops at the Riôtel Matane. This again would be our take off point and last night’s stay of this tour, with the truck and trailer parked for the week. DAY 1

we woke to a sunny, sub-zero day sitting at -25, and as we unloaded the sleds from the trailer, the grip warmers were set to high until we got the blood flowin’. Sleds warmed up, back packs on, and now in the saddle, we were throttle down, heading east on trail 5, looking for trail 595 which is the first southerly trial thru the Chic Choc Reserve Mountains. This trail heading south brings you thru some beautiful mountain views, and with the trail groomed to exactly what we were looking for, it made the ride so far, all worth our drive east. We were heading south to stay the night in New Richmond at Hôtel Le Francis. The temperatures were on an extreme rise as we got closer to the peninsula’s south shore on Chaleur Bay, and it was making us wonder what new weather could be moving in for us in the upcoming days. Once we arrived at Hôtel Le Francis, we were greeted with the welcoming staff that helped us get settled in and comfortable. we checked the weather update, and found out that Mother Nature had brought the temps up to around the freezing point and she dropped some fresh snow….. But she decided to toss in a freezing rain alert for the day. Oh Good! Once back on the sleds and riding about a foot of fresh snow, we were heading east towards Chandler, hoping the rain would hold off. Well, cooperate she did not….and dropped some precipitation on us for several hours that, of course froze to us immediately, and made the visibility challenging at times. However, we were still sledding, and it takes more than a little rain to set us diehards back. I’m sure you all agree! After a stop at the Chandler Snowmobile clubhouse, which is the home club and central call centre for all grooming and trail updates in the Gaspé Region, this left us not far from our overnight stay at Hotel Chandler, and the end of our second day. We have stayed at this hotel before, and with sled parking right at your room door, and an excellent restaurant right in the hotel, this is the place to drop your boots and relax for the night. of the tour we woke to about +8 temps and sunshine. However, our friend Mother Nature did drop a lot of rain overnight in Chandler, and the weather channel was reporting that a lot of rain had fallen on the north shore in Mt. SaintPierre the day before. This is where we were heading for night 3, via trail 597, and were crossing our fingers. As we headed north, the trails were showing no real signs of effects from the rain whatsoever. The sun was shining and this day was starting out to be a sledding day that you would pick off a menu, if you could pre-order your day of riding. Now, the farther we rode, and after exiting north out of Murhdocville, the trails were now showing some early signs that Mother Nature did pay a visit the day before…. cause for any concern?….I didn’t think so…. However, within 5 km from Mt. Saint-Pierre, and descending 1,350 ft out of the higher elevation, we now had a coastal view of the St. Lawrence, and the landscape was showing hard signs that our friend, Mother Nature took the north shore trail from us. We were now seeing spring-like conditions in February, and landscape with absolutely no snow cover, that we have never witnessed here before. Working our way up to a beautiful interior view, as you can see by the photo, we were out of snow on the north shore. After some minor road scratching, we made it to our hotel in Mt. Saint-Pierre to stay the night at Le Délice Motel, nestled in the valley. www.hotelfrancis.qc.ca

onsnow With our truck and trailer approx 2.5 hrs away to the west by car, I made a phone call to Zoe, and discovered that the trails back to Matane were completely un-ridable and closed. In three days we went from near perfect conditions, to closed. So unfortunately, we had to be taxied back to our starting point in Matane to get the truck. Thanks a lot Mother Nature!! The climate on the east coast is forever changing, without much notice, and watching the forecast is a must here. You do need a well thought out plan for your ride, and a day or two grace is strongly suggested. The landscape here in the Gaspésie is unique unto itself, and offers every rider something they are looking

to experience. I have been able chat to many riders trailside that are visiting Gaspé, and I have yet to hear any disappointment. With several years of riding the Gaspésie Peninsula under my belt now, this sledder’s heaven is a “must visit” for any sledder.

ne of the most incredible single hours I’ve ever spent snowmobiling was the nearly 80 miles that Pat, Rich, Matt, Dan and I rallied this past March, in an area of New Brunswick, Canada, There, aboard some of the fastest, big bore iron available in 2016, riding on 30foot wide, perfectly-groomed trails that gently curved, climbed and meandered between Saint-Quentin, Serpentine Lake and Island Lake – the five of us rode for an hour straight, with the lever pressed to the handlebars, laughing like adrenalineinfused school kids leaving school for the start of summer. That you can ride 80 mph for an hour straight, on trails with endless turns, hills and stunning beauty, speaks to the quality of trails, the lack of traffic, and the fact that there are no speed limits in New Brunswick. Yes, you read that correctlyno speed limits.

The hour of fun we experienced probably also speaks to the group dynamics of this particular gang of knuckleheads, but that’s another story altogether. And for the record, we were all quite safe, and no other snowmobilers were present during this hour of speed. And yes, also for the record, I do know we’re talking Canada, and therefore I should refer to distance in kilometers. But since I’m a slow learner and I never made it past 3rd grade math, you’ll have to excuse me. What I won’t be excused from however, is gushing about the truly incredible riding in this area of New Brunswick, which we experienced last March, thanks to the generosity and expert companionship of Brad Mann, President of the New Brunswick Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (NBFSC), Ross Antworth, NBFSC General Manager, and Kyle Good, NBFSC Trail Manager. These guys are doing excellent work, building the coalitions,

and providing the support and energy to make New Brunswick a premier destination for snowmobiling in North America.

HOW MANY GUYS DOES IT TAKE TO FIGURE OUT WHICH DIRECTION THEY SHOULD GO? IN NEW BRUNSWICK, IT JUST TAKES ONE, WHILE ALL THE OTHER GUYS ARE THERE FOR MORAL SUPPORT.

First, with an annual average snowfall of more than 130 inches, this area of northern New Brunswick, sandwiched between the northern tip of Maine and the Atlantic Ocean, is a snowmobiler’s dream-come-true, especially if you want to ride big miles… I mean kilometers! There are 8,000 kilometers of trails, and if they’re anything like the roughly 700 kilometers that we rode over two days, they are worth the trip. Second, for the snowmobiler who seeks adventure, this area offers a truly remote riding experience that will awaken the inner-explorer inside of you. When you can ride for longer than an hour without seeing another human dwelling, let alone gas, you’re required to plan your route and fuel consumption accordingly. The OSM crew likes to think of itself as modern day Plaisted Expedition-types, who conquer wilderness through cunning resourcefulness (and the coolest phone apps). There are large swaths of New Brunswick that tested our folly, and gave us just enough anxiety to feel like we actually did earn the title of “Explorers.” Of course, there are also untold numbers of cities and towns along the perimeter of this province for those who want their daily fix of Tim Horton’s. Third: the trails! In the 700 km we rode in NB, only for 50 km did we have to experience something that resembled a bump. For the other 650 km, the trails were smooth as glass. Indeed, we did zero suspension testing on this trip, but nobody seemed to complain about it. And the trails aren’t just groomed to perfection; they’re also marked and signed with equal care and attention. While we modern day Plaistedtypes can discern directions and distances by looking to the skies, reading the movements of animals and relying upon our sextants and sundials, other snowmobilers might appreciate knowing exactly where they are at every intersection. There are great snowmobile destinations throughout Canada and the U.S. We should all be so lucky to visit each of them. his trip all started back at last year’s Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersport show when OSM and The Ontario Tourism Market Partnership Corporation got together and developed an all-expense paid trip for two to ride with the crew of OSM. The contest, dubbed #TripWithOSM, had attendees of the show following clues that were published and promoted leading up to the big event that created a photo-type scavenger hunt. The clues were; 1) I haven’t shaved because winter is coming, 2) Americans think all Canadian look like me, 3) Sometimes I can make your feet sore. The astute and smart attendees that figured it out found the full size cut out of Paul Bunyan in the Ontario Travel Pavilion and snapped a shot of themselves posing with Paul and posted it to social media outlets with the “hashtag” TripWithOSM and after that they were entered into the contest. Tons of people posted pictures but only one could win. At 3:30pm on the final day of the show the draw was made and Elizabeth (Buffy) Fulton-Breathat was announced the winner! – And so began the #TripWithOSM adventure.

After the dust had settled from the October Show, Mike Blakoe of OSM and I started to plan the trip for the lucky winner, and anxiously waited for the snow to fly across Ontario. Well, we all know that last year was not a banner year for snow in Ontario. (OK there, we said it, it’s over, and we all got through it), so when it was time to choose the best location to ride for the trip, we decided to go head to where we know there is always snow, Kirkland Lake. The lucky winner Buffy made the obvious choice to bring her Husband Chuck Breathat who it turns out is the President of the Sudbury Trail Plan. Being that Chuck was pretty familiar with Sudbury it was another reason we decided to head to Kirkland Lake, as Sudbury it was only fair that if you win a all-expense paid trip you should probably snowmobile in a new area. The next decision was to decide how far we want to make the ride. This gets

onsnow tricky when you put together a contest as you don’t know the level of riding ability of the winner. It is not a good or bad thing as to the level of ability because we have taken advance riders on trips and those are just starting out in the industry. For us it doesn’t matter because; a) we are riding and b) it is actually fun to go with newbies and take in the excitement and awe the sport of snowmobiling creates with sledders who are new to the sport. The comment back from Buffy when we asked her level of snowmobiling and if she rides (at the time we did not know her husband was the President of the Sudbury Trail Plan) was the best response: “Do I Ride? Absolutely, everything from 2500kms trips around Ontario to the mountains and ocean side trail of New Brunswick” Right there, we knew we could put together a great ride. The next step, pick the route. Due to schedules and weather, the trip was taken down to a two day/one night adventure, so with help from our friends at the Northeastern Ontario Tourism office, we decided we would leave from Kirkland Lake, make our way to Cochrane via the A trail and return back down the second day. Our starting place where the truck

and trailer would live for the night was the Comfort Inn Kirkland Lake. This is a great spot to start and is set up for snowmobilers. First they have a separate parking lot with ample room for the trailers. Second the trail literally cuts through the parking lot via a short access trail. We arrived around the dinnertime, and as a travelers, note there is no restaurant attached to the Comfort Inn so you will need to head out for dinner. After checking in, and meeting our winners in the lobby, we asked the best place for a burger and a beer was and the hotel told us you have to head down to Vienna’s Bar and Grill. For us it was a short cab ride down town and as always it is good to listen to the local at the hotel. Food was good at Vienna’s and the beer is cold. Check. After dinner and some great discussions about sledding with our new hardcore sledders Buffy and Chuck it was back to the hotel, get some shut eye, and get ready for the ride to Cochrane. As we awoke the next day, Mother Nature was not kind to us. She had rolled in with a freezing rain storm, that after checking our weather apps looked like it was going to last the day. To most, this would have deterred the average sled-

der from heading out on an overnight saddlebag ride, due to the inclement weather, but not us. We are sledders. Rain or Shine, we ride. We did discussed this with the winners, and they too are hardcore and the resounding answer was; what is a little rain? So with saddlebags packed and as many extra gloves we could muster, we set out along the A trail to Cochrane. The first part of the trail out of Kirkland Lake is a really great mixture of nice sweeping corners and wooded trails. There are some really good fast spots, and the thickness of the forest with

the snow-covered pines is really cool. There was several stops needed as the ice was building up pretty bad and you needed the time to scrape the goggles and face shields, but again not complaining just dealing with what Mother Nature was throwing at us. After the first part of A trail you pop out in Ramore, which has a really great local restaurant called Rollys, and it was all agreed that a coffee and piece of pie to warm up was in order. You could tell by the clientele that this was the local place to meet and the staff was great. After our warm up session, it

was back on the A trail to make tracks to Iroquois Falls for lunch stop. You will need to stop in Matheson for Gas and there is an Esso right off the trail. The trail up to Iroquois falls is fast. A good portion of this is old rail line between Ramore and Matheson, and then you start getting into pretty cool elevation changes with a mix of woods and meadows running into Val Gangé, then switches back to fast straights into Iroquois Falls. We made great time to lunch and stopped at another great local restaurant in the downtown called the Imperial Restaurant. To get to the Imperial there is a bit of road rashing for a few blocks but the place is well marked on the trail and you can find it. After lunch and a well needed de-thaw, we gassed up in Iroquois Falls and made tracks to Cochrane. Once back on the A Trail, the trail to Cochrane has to some of the best sledding this guy has done in the freezing rain. Even though the weather was inclement, the trails were so good that you literally forgot about the ice rain. The trail is fast with again those swopping really fast corners that make you work just enough to keep you warm, but not crazy tight trails that you feel like you are on a snowcross track. We arrived at our overnight destination called the Best Western Swan Castle Inn in the downtown core of Cochrane just as the dark and cold was setting in. It was perfect timing because any later without the daytime

onsnow and it was going to get ugly. The timing to Cochrane is the perfect mix of long enough that you are not beat up, but still felt like you got the most out the trails you would want in a day. The Swan Castle Inn is set up for snowmobilers for sure. It has a separate gated parking lot for sleds for the overnight guest and they completely welcome sleds. The Inn is really easy to find off the main trail and the rooms are modern and comfortable. Check the website in advance as they have some really good sleds packages which includes accommodations and breakfast in the morning. We met up with a ton of sledders at the Inn and even with the rain, everyone was in great spirits. There is no bar attached to the restaurant however there is a place within walking distance that we need to tell you about. We are not taking credit for finding the best ribs in all of Northern Ontario, that honour goes to; friend of the magazine and a sales rep for Kimpex, Jeremy Girard. After we arrived in Cochrane I promptly texted Jeremy and told him where we were, and where is a good place to eat because I knew Jeremy grew up here and has deep ties to the area. Within in about 3 seconds of

sending the first text, Jeremy immediately replied back; “Go To JR’s BBQ and order the ribs. Dude the sauce is black gold” Enough said, off to JR’s it was. The walk is a short distance from the Castle Inn (actually for us and the ice rain it was a short slide) and Jeremy did not lie. The place was packed and everyone was eating ribs. If I maybe so bold, I describe the ribs as Legen…wait for it..dary. A big tip of the helmet to our buddy Jeremy for suggesting this place. The next day the rain has subsided and we stoked to get back out on those trails. Today, and again after talking to our friend Jeremy from Kimpex, we were also invited to visit the Cochrane Classic Vintage Riders Museum and the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat. Yes you read that correctly, there are polar bears in Cochrane and you can get to the museum and habitat directly from the snowmobile trails. It turns out that Jeremy’s dad, Dan Girard is the president of the museum and he was generous enough to take time from his day to do a private tour of the museum during off hours so we could take the time to really appreciate what they have created in Cochrane. The Museum is filled

onsnow with Vintage Sleds, but also really cool vintage snowmobile clothing and accessories that certainly took this sledder down memory lane. The concept of the museum to display owners vintage snowmobile that are on load to the museum, so there is a certain change-over that occurs and the snowmobiles inventory is ever-changing, so what we saw last winter will be a bit different that what you would see this year. The work that has been done to the museum, and the care put into it, really shows the dedication and the love of the sport Dan Girard and his team have to snowmobiling. After touring the museum, we met up the folks at the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat, which is connected to the Museum, where the staff was also generous to allow us to tour through the habitat and view a feeding during the morning break. The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat is both the largest, and the only human care facility in the world dedicated solely to polar bears. With 7 hectares of pristine, natural environment categorized as sub-arctic, the habitat also features the world’s largest enclosed lake that provides an ice platform for up to 7 months of the year. It is truly an amazing thing to see and if you ever find yourself sledding in Cochrane, you need to take the time and head over to the Museum and Polar Bear Habitat. It is very easy to find with great signage from the trail and it leads directly to the front door. Be prepared to spend and hour or so if you are into the

vintage stuff, because there is a lot of it there. After our private tour, we saddled up and started making tracks back down to Kirkland Lake as Buffy had to be on call for her job and we were excited to get riding again. With the ice gone and the rain stopped the trail back down was much better than the day before and more enjoyable for sure. We made our back down and stopped for lunch in Matheson. We stumbled across a great little hidden gem called the Northern Delight Chinese food restaurant. When in doubt of a restaurant I always pick one where the big rigs are out front because experience shows that if the truckers who take the highway route everyday stop there, that means the portions are good, the food is hot, and the price is reasonable. The truckers did not let us down on the North Delight Chinese Food Restaurant. You can also access the parking lot from the gas station in Matheson. After lunch it is a straight shot down back down to Kirkland Lake and we were back at the trucks before the sun set. At the beginning of this adventure, and riding with new people, you never really

With Mother Nature against us, and the desire to ride, I can truly say that the Winners of the #TripWithOSM were some the best sledders I have travelled with and can be put into the category of hardcore. A really big thanks to Buffy and Chuck for making great memories and new sledding friends, and to Dan Girard for taking the time to let us tour the museum and polar bear habitat. All of that wrapped up in two days and one night. If you are looking for great trails, good people and a ton of fun then the trip to Cochrane from Kirkland lake needs to be on your sledders bucket list. See you out on the trails.

There are no big cities, but rather small towns that are just far enough apart to seem distant and cozy. The trails curve and twist in a path that reflects the contours of the land itself, and feel as if they’re meandering rather than efficient. These trails are groomed and marked to perfection. And of course, it’s all in a region with HUGE snow cover and an extra-long long winter. That’s my perfect snowmobile destination. And the best part is that it’s not some make-believe fantasyland; it’s Quebec!

RIVERS ARE A CENTRAL FEATURE TO THIS AREA OF QUEBEC.

With the hyfax still warm on from our two days of riding in New Brunswick, our crew of five yahoos hopped in the truck and headed to Quebec for two additional days of late-season snowmobiling. Saint-Raymond was our destination city, with the hotel/brewpub Roquemont serving as our base of operations and the source of fantastic fare and refreshments. From this fun and comfortable launch pad, we spent two days riding up and down the northwestern flank of the St. Lawrence River, crossing the many streams and rivers that flow into the great waterway. Quebec is renowned for its fantastic snowmobile trails, and this area checked all of the boxes to reinforce that reputation; impeccable trails that are signed, marked and groomed to perfection; terrain that fits somewhere in-between “mountain” and “hills”, with the resulting elevation changes and valley-carving layout to the trails; and an enchanting quality to the villages that I hadn’t expected. Seriously, with their beautiful churches and steep-pitch houses that seem nestled in surrounding hills and trees, these towns seemed like they’re straight out of a Disney Christmas movie! And there are

snowmobile club houses/warming shacks all over the place, with an open door and fire to warm weary riders. This is a region where snowmobile touring is reality rather than marketing. In the two days the OSM crew rode here, we saw multiple groups of riders, whose sleds were packed with gear, and were seriously hauling-arse in terms of speed and distance. Lots of big iron rolling these trails, and these riders weren’t afraid to lean on it for looooong stretches. Fun stuff. Being smack-dab in the middle of Quebec, this is also a region where French is the spoken language. Though Pat doesn’t speak a word of French, his last name (Bourgeois, pronounced “booj-wah”) is decidedly French sounding, so we put him in charge of international relations and ordering at the few restaurants that didn’t have English-speaking wait staff. The good news is that French-Anglo relations in this area have never been better. The bad news is that OSM crew consumed great food, but we have no idea what any of it was. Fortunately, there was no translation needed to understand the many squiggly, colored lines on the snowmobile trail ON SNOW MAGAZINE • VOL 31 • ISSUE 4

There were trails that blanketed the entire region, from the towns that dot the periphery of the St. Lawrence, to the far outposts north and west – what some might characterize as middle-of-nowhere, but where we once again heard ghost echoes of Plaisted; Cartier; Joseph Armand; Wild Bill; Champlain and others.

Fueled by the spirit of these rugged adventurers, our path brought us on an out-and-back to L’Etape, a ride that I will never forget. The trip there gave us six inches of fresh, coupled with a stunning lack of other riders, which resulted in a fun, spirited pace that reminded us why 800-class sleds are so damn much fun. It

also reminded us of why large fuel tanks are desirable, as the Apex ran dry a few miles from L’Etape, a casualty of a small tank, fresh snow and a happy throttle. No matter, we towed it the final stretch, and fueled up at the lone fuel stop/restaurant, and then headed back to Saint-Raymond with the intention of being a little more

onsnow judicious with the throttle. When we met the groomer 45 minutes later, it was a green light to return to our previously scheduled rallying. The second and final day of riding was a decidedly less rural route, hitting the villages of Saint-Alban; Saint-Adelphe; Sainte-Thecle; Saint-Casimir (with its beautiful cathedral); Saint-Gilbert; SaintBasile and other places less-saintly, but wonderful nonetheless. We experienced fantastic snow, especially considering we were a week from April, a situation helped by an annual average snowfall exceeding 115 inches (with more snowfall another 100 miles north). While we had some nice long stretches of spirited riding during the two days, most notably to L’Etape on day one, our group rode at a more leisurely pace on the Quebec leg of our trip. Maybe we’d had enough of the high-speed stuff, maybe it was the visual allure of the area or some other input. Regardless, the trails and scenery here were perfect for either style of riding. Snowmobile journalists often get asked, “Where’s the best place you’ve ever ridden.” The easy answer is, “The places I’ve ridden with great people.” It’s a deflection of course, in part because there are truly, so many outstand-

ing snowmobile destinations throughout North America. This area of Quebec is certainly among the finest snowmobile areas that this particular journalist has sampled. I’d recommend it to anyone that is considering it. If you were truly of an adventurous spirit, I’d suggest multi-day loops that include L’Etape, Saguenay and

La Tuque, and some spare cans of fuel. For the less remote experience, the vast network of trails and villages along the St Lawrence are superb. Either way, it’s a perfect destination for a great snowmobile adventure.

That is all good and fine if you’re riding with a buddy (which is the correct way to ride by the way..) but what happens if you are alone? Well this is what the Stuckmate is for - The universal design allows you to aħached it to virtually any handlebar and throħle control. Once aħached walk to the front of your sled and as you tug the ski loop, squeeze the spring-loaded trigger on the Stuckmate handle, which transfers the throħle control directly to your sled. It goes with out saying, we highly suggest a few pracধce runs before you get stuck so you can get the feel of the control. We did just that in our shop earlier this month, and to follow is what we found out.

The instructions are pretty much self explanatory, however just like the HOT warning on a coﬀee cup, we have to say it. Turn…Sled…Oﬀ… before installing the Stuckmate.

Attach the spring-loaded clip to as much of the throttle as you can. Every throttle is a bit diﬀerent and some have warmers so you may have some adjustments after you get it fully installed.

Place handlebar mount with the yellow posts facing upwards around 1-1.5 from the start the of bar. Again this will be diﬀerent on every sled but basically you want the cable as straight as possible, and the rubber band to be as tight as possible.

This is the most important step. Test your setup before you start the engine and make sure there is good throttle control and there is no binding and the throttle is not stressed. You will need some slight adjustments, and once it’s on, you will immediately see how it works.

OK! Now you are ready to head out and hit the backcountry, with all the confidence knowing that if you get stuck, you are now able to get yourself out using the Stuckmate. One thing that is mandatory when using the Stuckmate - aħach the tether cord to your wrist before actually starধng your sled. The reason is this; if you whisky-throħle it, and the sled gets away from you, the tether cord will remain aħached to your wrist and the Stuckmate will break away from the handlebar and will cease actuaধng the throħle.
