WINCH REQUIRED

hen it’s 30 Celsius on the trail, and the humidity is making it feel over 40, it’s a perfect day to be in the garage, pulling an install. Last week we experienced one of those days that pretty much felt the same as standing under one of those giant hair dryers your grandmother would have spent hours under, back in the day at the salon. I s o ed u at t e o in t e office to do a ro er o u on a u t at I rode earlier in t e ee and en I al ed in so e of t e u s ere already set up and working on a build – you’ll see it in a future issue. I ad done t e surface clean before putting it away, but it still required a little more polish before our next ride. a e I old sc ool ut in e erience beginning a long-term build is best started with winches, skid plates, etc., because it’s doubtful that you’re able to complete the entire build without going for a few spins in between installations. You see, starting with the things that will get you out of trouble when needed, or help you avoid trouble, just makes perfect sense to me. The guys installed a new exhaust, a sweet set of wheels and rims, and an extreme sound bar… then t e ere callin it a da . I as ed a out a inc they said the winch won’t be missed, it’ll be installed next time they’re able to spend some time in the s o . I al ed t rou t e s o to t e a a ine stack and tossed an older issue of ATV World on their station, and told them to read the ‘Tortoise and the Hare’! I can t ait for our ne t ride and I oin to a e sure t at I in t e ridin s ee er. Hopefully, they install their winch before that; if not, they’ll be pleased that they can listen to their favorite music while waiting for the winch and camera to arrive. In t e eanti e sit ac rela and en o t is issue, because there’s a lot of great reads. Nick is with Yamaha and their new model lineup, and he takes a look at the Polaris General 4. We have the cool cene It featurin t e nort ern edition of t e High Lifter Mud Nationals and lots more.

Wheels Don’t worry guys we’re on our way. I wish we installed the JBL soundbar in here.

Mid Summer heat waves make me think of riding under one of these hair dryers.

Until next time, if you know what‘s good for you, don’t leave home without your Winch!

KEN BLOCK’S ULTIMATE SUMMER FUN MACHINE

The bad to the bone Maverick X3 has been turning heads since it made its debut, but this custom build from the Hoonigan himself, Ken Block might be our favorite one yet. The Maverick X3 MAX four seater is uilt to e street le al in ta and is co lete it bike rack for mountain bike transport. Ken calls it the “ultimate Park City summer fun machine”. The vehicle is bolstered with a bigger turbo, black and gold graphics, new cage, and a handbrake. Ken said he always dreamt of adding a fully-custom, rally-style hydraulic handbrake setup to a side-by-side, and the crew from S3 Powersports made it happen. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 3

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ALL-STAR BUILD When it comes to the heat of summer and Major League Baseball, the biggest event of the season is undoubtedly the All-Star Game where the game’s biggest stars gather for an evening of big hits and big smiles. To assist in the celebration, Polaris partnered with Discovery Channel’s Diesel Brothers in the creation of two custom built side-bysides. Featuring a RZR XP 4 and a RANGER Crew 1000, each is worthy of all-star consideration and both feature stand-out red, white, and blue markings with American League and National League logos.

HighLifter Quadna MUD NATIONALS We headed down to Quadna Mountain Park in Hill City, Minnesota, just a few hours north of St-Paul, for the 2017 High Lifter Quadna Mud Nationals, and what an event it was. This year Quadna Mud Nationals was off the charts with endless riding trails, mud puddles, obstacle courses, ATV pull, and a poker run. We always had something to ride our UTV/ATV on, through or over. Over 3,200 people attended this event, and it definitely felt like it with all the off-road vehicles

Even Arctic Cat had demo rides available. Basically, bring the camper and set up at one of the campground sites and the party continues all night long. This is a 3-day event with endless

MUD,

by Sides and snowmobiles come in somewhere around 10 years, while boats and camper trailers come in around 20 years. This estimated value of the equipment after these timelines, (based on the condition) will vary of course, but these timelines seem to be the most acceptable for calculating depreciation.

&Gears

Then I came across quite a few different ways that the industry calculates the depreciation value of your pride and joy. The following are the three ways, (although they still really sting the pocket book) that made the most sense to me.

SWEAT

THE COST OF OWNERSHIP… OUCH!! A

lthough we usually don’t think of depreciation as an expense, it is actually the single greatest cost involved with owning any new vehicle. In fact, the old adage states that in most cases your new vehicle loses about 10% the moment you drive it away from the dealership. On a $15,000.00 ATV, that’s $1500.00! In the first year about 20% or $3000.00 and it will be higher if you buy a “new” noncurrent model. That really hurts. This issue became “very” personal to me this spring when I was attempting to trade in my 6 year old, fifth wheel trailer on a Toy Hauler. It has become really clear to me that buying a new camping trailer is by far the very worst financial investment/decision I have ever made for a purchase. This experience has been a really tough and expensive lesson. So, I wanted to know how these “depreciation values” were actually calculated, or were they just various industry fabrications. First off, I know there are consumer issues around supply and demand, and makes and models that are popular, bank interest rates on new vehicles verses used, and the how well the Loonie is standing up against the Greenback south of the border, but………there has to be some rhyme or reason to this calculation doesn’t there??? While researching, the first thing that came up was the importance of calculating the estimated “useful life” of the vehicle in question. Automobiles, motorcycles, ATVs, Side

40

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 3

Straight Line Depreciation (accurate only if you keep your vehicle over 5 years) Take the cost of your ATV with the useful lifecycle set at 10 years. Then make a reasonable estimate (what you would honestly pay for this ATV if it were 10 years old and well used) what it will be worth. So, if the ATV is $12,000.00 and you would pay $2000.00 for it in 10 years, and then divide $10,000.00 by 10 years, or a depreciation of $1000.00/year. Declining Balance Depreciation (higher depreciation when new, lower depreciation when old) Take the cost of your ATV at the same $12,000.00, with the estimated useful lifecycle set at 10 years. Let’s say this model of ATV should be worth an estimated $2000.00 in ten years. Divide $2000.00 by $12,000.00 giving you a depreciation multiplier of 0.166 per year. Therefore, the first year would be $12,000.00 X 0.166 = $1992.00 worth of depreciation. So for year 2, $12,000.00 - $1992.00 (year 1 depreciation) X 0.166 = $1662.00 of depreciation. For year 3, $10,008.00 $1662.00 (year 2 depreciation) X 0.166 = $1385.00 of depreciation, and so on until year 10. Sum of Year’s Digits Depreciation Method (a tax accounting method) Again, the cost of your ATV is $12,000.00, and the useful lifecycle is 10 years, with an expected residual value of $2000.00. Subtract $2000.00 from $12,000.00 which equals $10,000.00. The formula to calculate the depreciation factor is as follows: Add 1 to the useful life cycle and multiply that number by the lifecycle years, and divide by a factor of 2. Above example: 10 + 1 X 10 ÷ 2 = 55; this number is the denominator of the depreciation rate. Depreciation for year 1, the calculation would be 10 ÷ 55 = 0.182, therefore $10000 X 0.182 = $1820.00 Depreciation for year 2, the calculation would be 9 ÷ 55 = 0.164, therefore $10000 X 0.164 = $1640.00 Depreciation for year 3, the calculation would be 8 ÷ 55 = 0.145, therefore $10000 X 0.145 = $1450.00 and so on for each consecutive year. If you are looking at buying or selling a used piece of equip-

ment, a quick way of calculating the residual value, (what it is worth at the end of its lifecycle) is to access a resource like the Kelly Blue Book and take 15% of that value. You can also call your insurance company and get them to give you what they consider what the replacement value would be, and take 15% of that amount. Checking with your insurance company annually is a good practice. Just because you are paying on a $20,000.00 Side X Side, does not mean you will get $20,000.00 if your vehicle ends up being a write-off! The Bottom Line! So, after all my research and price checking, here is my analysis of my area in Central Ontario around Powassan. If you own a Side X Side, the value of your vehicle is excellent, (with low depreciation) due to the supply and demand aspect previously mentioned. Next, in the number 2 spot, your ATV will hold its value, and in many cases, beyond the 10 year lifecycle previously discussed. Keep it clean and maintained, and you will have no problem selling it at a good price. NOTE: This does not include competition/racing models. In at number 3, you find snowmobiles. The interesting part here is that some models like the Ski-Doo Tundra, were very reasonably priced when bought used a couple of years ago. Now their price has gone up substantially because of demand, but on the other side of the coin, some muscle sleds have come down in price.

It is always best to pay as much down as possible when buying a vehicle. The interest on a loan is added to the cost of ownership.

The volatile relationship between the Canadian Loonie and the American Greenback will always affect what we pay for something and what something is worth in the marketplace.

In the motorcycle industry, there are some great deals on new rides and it is a buyer’s market for used motorcycles right now. As far as automobiles and marine craft go, there is too broad a spectrum to discuss. What I can tell you from my experience while searching to replace my fifth wheel, (which initially started this journey) going new is not the way to go. As far as I can see, a clean 3-5 year old used trailer that has been looked after, will give me the best bang for my buck, and the least pain through depreciation.

42

In closing, I would like to dedicate this issue of Mud, Sweat & Gears to the memory of my Mom. You were always there to encourage and support me in any endeavour I wanted to experience. I miss you. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 3

This illustration shows how any vehicle we purchase loses about 10% the minute it leaves the dealership. Some vehicles lose even more.

True Mid-Size With Real World Tech The Kodiak 450 features a truly more compact chassis and footprint that the mid-size customer will appreciate versus just shrinking the motor in a full sized ATV. Yamaha calls it “The mid-size multipurpose ATV to bridge the gap between the entry level customer desiring comfort and confidence and t e e erienced rider seeking handling and class-leading off-road versatility.” The all-new chassis is compact, yet extremely roomy, even with larger riders. Looking for its place in the market as the “true multipurpose ATV”, the Kodiak is more than ready for work, and beyond enjoyable as a trail-exploring adventure machine. RIDE TIME Enough tech-talk about how great the new Yamaha Kodiak should be, it was ti e to ride it and find out for oursel es. or our first ride i ression a a a brought us to a super tight ATV trail system, just outside Olympia, WA. The trail system is amazing with miles upon miles of hand cut trails that were initially built by the state’s inmate work program. The entire trail s ste is a and definitel not friendl . In fact if ou ere anywhere wider than 46 inches, you were going be at a serious disadvantage. These trails were exactly what the midsize chassis Kodiak is designed for. The local trail riders all rode smaller machines as there is no use for more power, and no room for additional track width. The riding area is an a a in forest filled it trees ferns, etc., and the trails give you no margin for error. The trails are lined with stumps, rocks, etc., and for the most part, if you’re doing 20 mph, you’re pushing the limit.

YAMAHA’S IMPROVED FEEDBACK ON THE EPS SYSTEM IS ALSO GREATLY APPRECIATED ON A TRAIL SYSTEM LIKE THIS.

In a trail s ste t is tight, even on a mid-size ATV like the Kodiak, took a lot of precision to navigate at any kind of s eed. It as i ediately evident why a certain customer would value the narrower machine. The extra few inches of space between the outside of the tire and the trail edge makes a huge difference, and allows you to confidentl ride at a decent pace versus creeping (or squeezing) through like you would on a larger machine. Yamaha’s improved feedback on the EPS system is also greatly appreciated on a trail system like this. While its damping characteristics can save your wrists when clipping a tree, root, or stump, what’s more important is that you can still feel the trail beneath you to avoid t e i acts in t e first lace. o e ot er

EPS systems are so overpowering that you would no longer be accurate enough to navigate some of these trails without many more mistakes and trail edge impacts. When you need to stop, the front brakes will stop the machine in a hurry. In d all eel en ine ra in does a great job assisting on downhills, or even level terrain. The rear brake alone is

pretty minimal and better used for slowing, rather than if you really need to stop in a hurry. The pedal is also placed all the way to the front of the really large foot wells; this helps with all day comfort, but took some getting used to when trying to stop with it. On the trail system we rode, and even on the short graded road connecting sections, we were never looking for more

AN AMAZING 500 KM WEEKEND WITH

A BRAND NEW POLARIS GENERAL 4 e ust ot ac fro an a a in fis in tri it a rand ne four seat General 4. Our General 4 had less than 20 km on Friday, but rolled onto the trailer with just over 540 on Monday night. Previous to this past weekend, our only review was based on a couple of hours of testing at a multi-line launch, with multiple editors waiting in line. By comparison, we pretty much spent the entire three-day weekend in it, on a variety of different terrains.

I

know we’ve mentioned it before, but we absolutely love our Polaris General. The crossover machine pretty much created its own class, bridging the gap between work and la or s ort and utilit . If ou re not familiar with it, the General combines over a foot of quality suspension travel and a 100 HP engine with a full size a load in a du ed e ui ed . The General is derived directly from the RZR S 1000, sharing the same 100 HP engine, suspension, drive train, wheels and tires. The General 4 gets all these great features with an extra 32 inches of overall length. An all-new cockpit has been designed for 4 passengers, and the ultimate alance of or and la . nli e an ot er seat s t e rear ro seatin is anything but an afterthought. The General 4 claims the most rear seat elbow and knee room available, and even gives front and rear passengers their own full-size, 5.8L water resistant, rear-center console with 12v plug and two cup holders. As for downright seating comfort, the General gets four identical, redesigned premium bucket seats. The seats offer a wide base

with supportive bolstering, and cut & sew covers with a waterproof layer to keep your bottom dry and comfortable. Polaris put a real focus on overall cabin comfort with insightful features like a padded center console top, padded steering wheel, and a full length rear grab ar. Inner door liners and t e ost rear passenger legroom and elbowroom in the industry; further ad’s to the General 4’s all day ride comfort. The 2017 General 4 also gets an allnew digital instrumentation cluster that moves with the tilt adjustable steering wheel for maximized visibility. The new cluster is a mix between digital and analog gauges that indicate speed, RPM, and all other standard trip info. The auto-adjusting backlight can switch from red to blue at the touch of a button. The suspension set-up features front and rear s a ars for confident andlin characteristics, regardless of payload. The General 4 is set up to stay planted on the trail, and the Walker Evans Racing suspension is tuned with dual rate springs, to maintain 62% of its 12 inches of ground clearance when fully loaded.

RIDE TIME

The group consisted of four good-sized guys, (5’10” – 6’3”) three women and two dogs, to be divided up between two RZR Turbo 4s and a General 4. The plan was to e lore t e i ierras in t e s shake down the new General 4 for this reie and catc so e fis . e ana ed to do two of these things really well, and totall failed at t e catc in fis art. For day one, we loaded up the General’s bed with a Rotopax spill-proof fuel can a s are tire a fift ound tool a fis in oles and a full stoc ed I o er soft cooler. e s ent t e entire first da loaded li e t is it three passengers averaging about 210 lbs. apiece in the seats. The payload as definitel su stantial ut in no a maxed out for the General. The all day trail ride brought us from fast hard-pack, fast dirt roads to rocky hill climbs, and then deep, loamy sand. The General 4 had really minimal handling issues related to the payload we were hauling. Even at higher speeds, it still turned well, soaked up the chop and would stop on a di e. e did find the suspension bottom a handful of times on unsuspecting g-outs. With three heavy guys in it and aggressive driving or higher speeds, you will want to add some preload to all four corners. While we did get it to bottom quite a few times, but the car still maintained a controllable and a level composure. The 100 hp General is the most powerful ec tilit roduced with class leading 0-40 mph times and 65 ft. lbs. of torque. Even as the class leader,

the four seat version weighs over 300 lbs. more than the 2 Seat model, without e en fi urin for ac seat assen ers or their luggage. The General 4 feels faster than any other crew cab utility machine, ut definitel slu is en co ared to t e t o seat eneral. In its defense e s ent ost of t at first da ridin et een 6500 – 8500 feet of elevation, which takes its toll on performance as well. The majority of the day was spent on hard pack, forest roads and the General 4 could pretty much keep up with the two Turbo XPs. On hard pack terrain we could get the General to run right around in t e ats. en e found ourselves in deep loamy sand next to the lake, it was a different story. Loaded down with three people in the sand with any kind of incline, it will take a heavy right foot to maintain about 40 mph.

DAY TWO’S REVIVAL

Our morning trip on day two had two less assen ers and I ended u rollin solo. We kept a similar load in the bed it a tire tools ice c est etc. ut I would be down about 430 pounds worth of passengers. Right off the bat, acceleration was greatly improved; the General 4 still didn’t want to break the 70 mph mark, but it sure got there a lot easier. With no passengers the General had an even easier time keeping up with the XP Turbos in the woods, and the tendency to bottom was gone as well. With just a driver and maybe 200 lbs in the bed, the General 4 is a much sportier, fun to drive

experience. We later found a similar driving experience with one extra passenger and nothing in the bed. e eneral definitel feels a lot stronger out of the hole with less payload. It s e ier it o er slides easier and will pull more speed on an incline. Overall, the General 4 feels a lot closer in performance to the 2 Seat General when it isn’t weighted down with extra gear and/or passengers. With that said, there isn’t an obstacle or trail that we found an ore difficult it a loaded do n machine, it just wasn’t quite as exciting or fast.

DAY THREE FAMILY TIME

ur final da as ro a l t e ore typical payload for the General 4; the Wife and I u front our on in t e ac and a spare tire, cooler, and tools in the back. We took a 300 km round trip to check out a ghost town. Trails consisted of hard pack, rocky dirt roads with a few snowdrifts and water crossings mixed in. As we loaded up, my “gamer” son was ecstatic to find out e ad is o n center console

The General features the same 100 hp Prostar engine as the RZR 1000 S.

and12 volt plug in the back for his cell phone. A cup holder to hold his beverage and some juice for his phone, and he was a happy camper. The center console was actually large enough to stuff sunglasses, a phone, and a light sweatshirt in for the ride. Another noticeably better thing about adventuring in the General is that you sta cleaner t an in a or ot er .

WE LATER FOUND A SIMILAR DRIVING EXPERIENCE WITH ONE EXTRA PASSENGER AND NOTHING IN THE BED. The stock doors do a great job of keeping out mud, water and even a lot of the dust. The one negative thing we noticed about the doors is that they were splitting at the clamshell connection on the top, like we experienced with our 2016 General. Oddly enough, it is only on the front doors and it looks like the back doors won’t have the same problem. The adjustment and latch closing issue we had on last year’s

Performance meets function with the General’s real deal working dump bed.

ATV World takes their time and sets out to find some gems along the southern portion of the Eastern Ontario Trail Alliance. One of the most frequently asked questions we get at ATV World is; “Have you folks ever done any overnight-saddle bag rides, and ere do ou do it o ans er t at Yes we have, and usually it was done down in the southern region and/ or in t e id est re ion of t e . The rules down south are much more lenient when it comes to the segment of “off-road” vehicles, and what roads you can travel to access trail systems. By design, that allows adventure riders like us to utilize access roads and reach more trails to go further. With ATV World being based in Ontario Canada, and with the new legislation that has recently passed

that is allowing more access to road travel, which results in more access to long distance type tours, we have made a conscious decision to focus our attention on the travel segment of t e ar et in ntario. it that concept in mind, we set out to wander Ontario’s Highlands for three days and two nights, leaving the truck and trailer behind, and see what cool and interestin t in s e could find out on t e trails. In t e fe da s t at we were there, we came across some amazing scenery, the smallest jail in Ontario, a completely renovated train station, a collection of historical artifacts, and of all things - a junk yard.

Welcoming signs everywhere tell the story to how much ATV’ers are welcome in the region One of the regions we were really interested in wandering through was Ontario’s Highlands, as it encompasses the Eastern Ontario Trail Alliance (EOTA) which is one of Ontario’s premiere and extensive ATV trail systems. To get the adventure started, we reached out to our friends Julie Mulligan and Kasia Wind of Ontario’s Highlands re ional touris office o e lained to us that the EOTA has over 2500km of organized ATV trails, and it would be that trail system that became the focus of our overnight destination trip. Basically, whatever we could strap to the buggies is all we would have for the trip. To make the trip happen, we also reached out to Cindy Cassidy, General Manager of the EOTA who was instrumental in helping is put this trip together. After a few discussions with Cindy, we decided then and there, that the theme of this trip was to “take our time” and really focus on what

74

makes the trails in this region so great. As we all know, sometimes when you’re planning these trips, you try to pack too many miles into the few days you have, and you end up focusing too much on the ride, and not enough on the people and places you are visiting. For this tour we would to leave the truck and trailer in Corbyville, make our way to Tweed for t e first ni t ead out to ar ot a e for the second night, and back to truck and trailer on the third day. That was all we knew. The crew that would embark on this adventure would be Logan, Jeff, Vince and me, Matt. Split between the Greater Toronto Area and the Ottawa Area, we decided that Corbyville (just north of Belleville off the 401) would be the perfect rendezvous starting point, as it was two hours for both parties. The buggies we would choose were a Yamaha Grizzly 700, a CFMoto CForce 800, and a Honda Pioneer . en ou et to elle ille

at the 401, Corbyville is less than 4km off the highway, and the EOTA has a large fenced parking lot dedicated to truck and trailer parking that is at the beginning of the southern portion of the trail system. o find t e ar in lot ta e t e e it for Hwy 37 off the 401, head north and follow the sign to Corbyville which is a left off Hwy 37. The Stirling Grand Trunk Train Station is a historic building, which was recently restored by the local Rotary Club and includes a tourist information center and collecta le s o . After the stop in Stirling, you quickly come to another junction with the option of heading North up the E106 towards Bonarlaw or East towards Campbellford. The large fenced trailer lot in Corbyville makes for a perfect start to a few days on the trails

turned out to be the Tweed Area Heritage Centre. Being in no rush to get rolling, we headed inside and met the curator of the Centre, Evan Morton, who was more than willing to s o us around and ta e us t rou t e facilit . If ou are into history, then you need to check out this collection. The heritage museum not only supports local artisans with original pieces of art work on display, but you also get to see a collection of historical military memorabilia, kids toys, and a huge collection of turn of the century tools that will make you wonder how our founding fathers ever built anything. There is a small charge to take the tour, but it is certainly worth it as the Tweed Heritage Centre really captures what it took to live in the early 1900’s in Ontario. After our sightseeing in Tweed, we were ready to get rolling and make our way to Sharbot Lake for the second night of our three-day trip. Navigating out of Tweed was as easy as getting in, with the trail cutting right through downtown and ending up on the other side of town. Arrows and signs will guide you out with no question. The trail starts off hugging Lake Stoco, which makes for great views to get the day rolling, and then back to the Rail Line and then a straight shot to Sharbot Lake. The entire trip to Sharbot Lake is easily done without rushing, in 4-5 hours. The trail is strai t and at so you can set your pace to what you’re comfortable with. Along the route you ill find so e nice forested areas, a few lakes, several rural farming communities and raised rail lines that offer up some pretty cool views. After a few hours on trail, you get to Kaladar for gas, food and a full outfitter t e store, should you need to restock the amenities that you’ve used up, out on the trails. This is a perfect spot in the trail to grab some water and trail snacks before you head out towards Sharbot Lake. Take this opportunity as well, to fuel up the buggies.

NAVIGATING OUT OF TWEED WAS AS EASY AS GETTING IN, WITH THE TRAIL CUTTING RIGHT THROUGH DOWNTOWN AND ENDING UP ON THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN.

Easy to navigate trails make this tour a no-brainer

Being the riders that we are, we made good time on the trails and hit Sharbot Lake in the late afternoon and easily found the Sharbot Lake ount Inn ic as our home for the second night. After checking in, we checked the EOTA map and realized there were more trails we could wander through on the north side of Sharbot Lake, so we dropped off our gear and headed out for a quick ride to see what e could find. ical on any trip is that when you are not looking for

it, is just the time that ou find t e idden gems. On the north trail out of Sharbot Lake, you come across several off-shoot trails from the main trail that takes you through some really great wooded trails with some twisty trail and elevation changes. All we did was just ride, and we found some really cool trails that made for the perfect end to a great day. After that, we headed back to the Sharbot Lake County Inn ic con enientl has the Crossing Pub attached directly to the

hotel, and to our luck, we discovered it was wing night! Yes, that’s right, we were going to get cold beverages and hot wings, and be able to walk back to our rooms. Check, check and check for all things needed when you spend a day on the trails. The rooms at the ar ot a e Inn a e all been renovated in modern décor, and the view out the balcony onto t e la e is a finis ing point to why you need to stay here, if you are staying in Sharbot Lake.

THE FINAL DAY HAD US HEADING BACK TO TRUCK AND TRAILER IN CORBYVILLE

After a great night in Sharbot Lake, enjoying the views of the lake and talking about our adventures, we woke early again and headed down the road to the Maples Restaurant for breakfast. Again, the trick here is to jump on your buggy, have breakfast, and then head back to the room to get suited up and pack your ear. It is t e ci ili ed a to tra el.

Directly along the trail, halfway between Kalardar and Sharbot Lake, we wandered across Kinney Auto Wreckers, who owns the property directly adjacent to the trail, with

some pretty rare old trucks directly in view when you ride by. There are several “No Trespassing” signs along the trail head so we don’t suggest stopping there. However, if you take a bit of time and head into the main gates off the trail, it is a full functioning auto wrecker, with some really amazing gems that, if you are into old trucks, it’s a really cool thing to see. Ask for permission and the owner is very welcoming for you to have a look. Being the gear heads we are, we were there for almost an hour… The last day, if you are at a good pace, the route will have you back to truck and trailer by late afternoon. On the way back to Corbyville, there is a trail junction at Crookstone that is a straight shot south to the parking lot, and is a really great “photoop”, as the East and West trail passes over the North and South Trails, so you can see buggies coming and going in all directions. SCORE OF THE MONTH

For Those About to Rock JBL Stadium Powersports Soundbar

Things are about to get loud in the ATV World shop. We just received this sweet looking and even sweeter sounding speaker system from JBL, and we’ve been fighting over the tuner ever since. According to our curmudgeon editor Bourgeois, there are few names in the audiophile kingdom more revered than JBL. Back in the day, when big stacks of speakers and a rack of components was a measure of your listening acumen, JBL speakers were deemed the cream of the crop. And while the iPod, and more recently the iPhone, have changed the listening habits of today’s youth, when it comes to making big, pure, crisp sound, nothing comes close to JBL. Take a look behind the screens of those big speaker stacks at the next stadium concert you attend, and chances are there are JBL speakers pounding out the jams. speaker system is the UB4100, the big brother to the similarly sized, standalone UB4000. Specifically designed for powersports applications including side-by-sides, boats, and open-top vehicles like Jeeps, the compact system delivers a blast of big speaker sound in typical JBL fashion. Beyond the sound, JBL has done their homework when it comes to satisfying the powersports crowd. Included with the kit is a flexible and sturdy mounting system that will fit virtually any size roll cage. The bar itself also separates, allowing you to create two speaker towers. There’s even a shoe mount for your GoPro or other action camera. Built for the rigors of off-roading,

Beyond the high-end sound, the JBL system gets top marks for its easy and versatile mounting system, simple connectivity that includes Bluetooth, RCA, and 3.5mm jacks, and sleek, compact design.

the Powersports Soundbar will withstand bumps and bangs up to a 10G shock, and it’s also weatherproof and splashproof. From a specifications standpoint, the bar houses a pair of 4” mid-range/woofers and one high-output dome tweeter per channel, driven by an internal amp delivering up to 120-watts of sound per channel. Frequency response goes down to a deep 50Hz and can hit the high notes with a screaming 20kHz top end. Other features include a detachable radio-frequency remote; audio outputs allowing you to expand the sound beyond your vehicle; pairing capabilities up to three Bluetooth devices; and the ultimate party atmosphere from the integrated glowing red LED that flashes to the beat. Who’s ready to dance?

The end cap houses the detachable remote which is intuitive and easy to use.

Quick release clamps are designed to fit nearly any size roll bar.

The quick release clamps also allow you to rotate the Soundbar up to 90-degrees for optimum positioning. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 3

DETONATION

ROADSIDE ATTRACTION

Parking lots filled with off-road vehicles is becoming commonplace, and it should become even more prevalent as the sport comes of age.

R

egular readers of this column no no t at I a four season enthusiast. No matter the ti e of ear I loo in to a e trac s. Growing up just a stone’s throw from the factories of Polaris and Arctic Cat, and during the same time snowmobiles were coming of age, making winter tracks was an early passion (and still is). Back then, trails were still coming of age too. In fact earliest ridin e ories were made following the locals as they crisscrossed farm fields, sloughs, and frozen rivers, stopping along the way at old homesteads, bends in the river, or adjacent to an old growth of trees. Each stop had a name, either for a landmark or a resident who once farmed or logged the area from years gone by. To me, this was riding and the very notion of a maintained trail was something foreign, and remained so until I o ed to t e i cit . It as t ere I disco ered t at e ind t e scenes and far away from the very rural co unit ere I re u ot er enthusiasts had been working hard to create a vast and interconnected trail system dedicated for snowmobiling.

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 3

Suddenly trail heads, destinations, and stops along the way took on an entirely different meaning. Those stops still had names, but instead of the remnants of a stone foundation and dilapidated barn as the backdrop for a hotdog cookout, these stops had menus, fuel, and several other groups of riders out making tracks as well. While the snowmobile landscape as c an ed si nificantl since t e i boom of the early 1990s, thousands of businesses from hotels and restaurants to lodges and bars, sprang up along the trails during that time. For many, snowmobiling was the lifeblood of their business and on any given weekend, you could find scores of snowmobiles parked out front. Seeing an off-the-beaten path establishment packed with snowmobiles on a winter weekend is a comforting sight. Knowing people are getting out and riding, and at the same time supporting the local economy is a win for everyone. So, what does this have to do with off-roading? The cycle is happening again. urin a s rin road tri I stu led

across a well-known snowmobile destination. In t e inter ont s the parking lot is often filled with sno o iles and ile I as e ectin to see a fe cars in t e lot I as pleasantly surprised to find a string of ATVs and side-by-sides parked out front. In an a s t e recreational activity we call off-roading is starting to come of age, much like snowmobiling did during the late 1970s and through the 80s. More clubs and associations are being formed, trail networks are becoming established, and as more opportunities to recreate are created, small businesses are beginning to ouris . While the trail network will likely never mirror that of snowmobiling due to many factors, the acceptance of offroad vehicles in communities and the softening of rules allowing these vehicles to be used on less traveled state, county, provincial, and municipality roadways, has opened the door to offroad destination riding and eventually, more roadside attractions in the years to co e. In an a s t e s ort of off road riding has only just begun.
