BUSY TIMES

J

ust like clockwork, it’s around this time that the clanking and dust starts to shuffle in the shop. We begin to install and reinstall parts on our ATVs and side-by-sides; windshields, plows, etc., and basically start getting things ready for the cold and snow. I’ve seen a few boxes arrive in the back labeled “Winter” in red sharpie. It looks like we are going to be warm this winter and won’t have a problem getting through the snow… We’ll see. Before e start our winter conversions, there’s still a lot more fall riding to do before the snow falls. We’ve been out at the fall dealer meetings, new releases and swap meets, and next to come is the indoor, off-road trade shows. While there is a lot of great new accessories and gear being released for the consumers, we’ve heard about a lot of exciting incentive programs coming down the pipe. Mark your calendars now for the World’s Largest Snowmobile, ATV & Powerpsorts Show - The 30th Annual Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersports Show at the International Centre this October 20, 21, 22, 2017. You

will be able to see all the new wares from Argo; Can-Am; CF Moto; Cub Cadet; Honda; John Deere; Kawasaki; Kubota; Polaris; Textron; and Yamaha… just to name a few that will be showing off their vehicles in their corporate displays this October. There will be numerous Clubs, Federations and Tourism areas showing their areas off to the masses. Parts and Accessories for ATVs and Side-by-Sides will be radially available for purchase right at the Show. And if you’re looking for trailers, you will never see such massive displays. There is also going to be a hands-on, off-road driver training area right at the show, on a mulch track, as well as a full-out live ATV freestyle show! Until next time, I’ll be starting to organize my winter parts from last year, and snooping around the shop here to see what the boys are up to. Hopefully, it snows and snows a lot this winter! If you make it to the Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersports Show, October 20-22 at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario please drop by our booth and say Hello!

IMG MOTORSPORTS JAMES HILL DOMINATES THE GORMAN RIDGE RALLY IMG Motorsports’ James Hill Wins the Gorman Ridge Rally in UTV, and furthers his points lead in the Production class. Hill and Co-driver Riley McGuinness drove their IMG Motorsports outfitted UTV to secure 6 out of 12 Stage wins. While the duo proved they belong in the top spot on course, they had received a 3 minute time penalty in a transit that ended them in 2nd overall out of the entire event and Top finishing UTV. Nasa Rally Sports’ Gorman Ridge Rally takes place at the Hungry Valley Recreational Park, where Parc Expose and Service were held at the Honey Valley Group Camp. With a total entry of 25 vehicles, The Gorman Rally Ridge ran incredibly smooth with the help of 90 or more volunteers to take on duty including timing, radio, crew and sweeps. Team 991 UTV is Powered by: IMG Motorsports, RaceLine Wheels, Big Gun Exhaust, Walker Evans Shocks, SuperATV, Benchmark Performance and PCI Race Radios.

ALL NEW RE-ENGINEERED POLARIS GENERAL DOORS

03

The Polaris General has earned a reputation as one of the greatest all around, multi-purpose UTVs on the market. It’s fun, fast, and functional, combining great handling with things like a dump bed and real-deal payload and towing capacities. The ATV World crew beat on ours for a solid year, and the only complaint is the doors. They looked great, but had issues with splitting down the seam, and even the latch flexing and opening. Polaris engineers saw these same issues as well, taking them seriously enough for a complete re-design for 2018. That’s right, Polaris has kept the shape and look that we all love, and re-engineered everything else about them. The new automotive style doors feature a larger, two-stage latch that is mounted to a steel plate and aluminum outer handle. This creates a more positive feel and consistent engagement. The inner workings now uses a 2 into 1 pull cable system, with in-line barrel adjusters and an alignment plate. This allows for easy adjustment for optimal trigger action and lower effort. The door shell gets through bolts that thread into the new inner frame to fix the splitting issue. A new door seal increases durability and improves fit. Along with these great new doors, the General and RZR line also get new prop shafts with CV joints, a better carrier bearing, and improved wheel bearings & seals.

HEARTLAND CHALLENGE – CHANEY Can-Am / XPS Lubricants / CT Raceworx driver Kyle Chaney piloted his Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R side-by-side vehicle to a win in the Pro Unlimited UTV class at the 10th Anniversary Heartland Challenge endurance race near Carlisle, Iowa. The Can-Am / XPS Lubricants / CT Raceworx-backed driver grabbed the holeshot during the land-rush-style start, and took the lead into the woods. Due to heavy dust and a lighting issue, Chaney dropped back two spots after his first pit. However, within one lap, the two-time Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) UTV Pro champion regained the lead, one he’d never relinquish. In fact, he beat out 70 other racers to notch his first four-hour race win since 2012. The five-mile course, which was covered in a dusty haze the entire race, consisted of a mix of specialty obstacles, wooded sections and rocks. Racers had to make as many laps as possible within the four-hour time limit. Chaney will return to the track to defend his points lead in the TORC Off Road Championship, September 1-2, at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway in Wisconsin.

Blurton and his team of Beau Judge, Ken Ruff and Eric Miramon put the No. 944 Can-Am / No Limit R&D Maverick X3 vehicle in front of 49 other UTV Turbo class competitors, at the end of a grueling 540-mile course. NO MATTER THE TERRAIN SLASHER GETS YOU THERE WWW.SLASHERPERFORMANCE.COM

The debut of Yamaha’s newest member of their offroad family is as much about a new direction for the company as it is new product. The allnew Wolverine X4 (WX4) represents the first vehicle from Yamaha positioned under a new, proven off-road experience brand promise, with hopes of delivering realworld capability, comfort, and confidence. According to Yamaha, the adventure seeking Wolverine X4 has been engineered from the ground up to be the most comfortable, quietest, and nimblest handling of any side-by-side vehicle. To get there, the WX4 is built upon a very compact platform,

24

especially for a four-seat vehicle. The wheelbase is just over 52-inches and the width is under 60-inches. To utilize these dimensions and still accommodate four passengers with equally plush bucket seats, the rear seats are positioned almost directly over the rear axle. The seats are also elevated and positioned atop what is traditionally the rear cargo box. Adding versatility to this arrangement, the seat bottoms can also flip up and the entire seat slides forward to create additional rear cargo box space. According to Yamaha, to achieve their primary goals of confidence and comfort,

they rethought the design and positioning of nearly every component of the vehicle. The engine, for example, is new from the case up. The 847cc parallel-twin, longstroke motor is very compact, allowing it to be mounted low in the chassis and deliver an overall low center of gravity. The motor and new UItramatic transmission are then mounted near the center of the vehicle, further enhancing the handling of the WX4 by optimizing the weight bias and balance. An incredibly tight turning radius, combined with the low center of gravity allows the WX4 to negotiate the tightest of terrain, even with four

passengers. Ensuring the new side-by-side can tackle the rugged stuff, it has been outfitted with On Command selectable 2WD/4WD actuation, complete with a differential lock. New exclusive 26-inch Maxxis tires tout a new tread pattern, that according to Yamaha, serve up tremendous grip while at the same time, eliminating unwanted tread pattern noise. Handling is further enhanced with standard Electronic Power Steering (EPS) that has been tuned for light steering effort, balanced feedback, and features 12-inches of adjustability at the wheel. Keeping with this light feel approach, a throttle by wire system (YCCT) electronically controls throttle inputs for smooth drive-a-way and acceleration, even in bumpy terrain. Another unique technical attribute of the new WX4 are the self-leveling rear shocks. Tuned for maximum comfort, the new Wolverine can deliver the best of both worlds, comfort and load carrying capability, thanks to the ability of shocks to retain optimum ride height, regardless of load. To do so, the exclusive coil over shocks can increase their damping capabilities when the shock senses greater payload and begins to cycle. “The new Wolverine X4 is more than simple dimensions and components, said Yamaha ATV and Side-bySide Senior Product Planning Manager, Travis Hollins. “It’s also about how the vehicle feels… how it sounds, and your sight lines while in the vehicle. The Wolverine X4 feels compact, it feels comfortable, and it’s incredibly quiet. It’s designed to

improve and enhance the riding experience and deliver ultimate adventure.” Thus far, the crew here at ATV World has only received a detailed, one-on-one review of the product and static first look. A full ride evaluation is planned for

this fall, followed by a full report in an upcoming issue. Also, look for an interview with Yamaha’s Mike Martinez, Vice President of ATV and Side-by-Sides in that same issue. – Ed.

The seating accommodations for passengers are very plush, complete with more than enough cup holders for ample hydration.

While the new 847cc parallel-twin engine features “long-stroke” architecture for improved torque and low-end power, the design remains compact, thanks to an offset cylinder to crankshaft design.

While we didn’t get a chance to drive the WX4 (yet), we did get to hear it run, and it is amazingly quiet. The vehicle utilizes a new large volume muffler, redesigned air intake, new helical cut gears, bolstered console insulation, and much more, all in an effort to make this the quietest side-by-side ever.

The rear cargo box opens up to what we would deem a “full-size” box when you collapse and slide forward the rear seats.

The Wolverine X4 truly is new from the ground up. New chassis, new suspension, new engine, and new drivetrain all come together in a design that Yamaha claims is their most comfortable, best handling, and most capable side-byside ever.

Whether you’re going for crowd grabbing attention, personalization, or both, the crew at Trail Star Audio nailed both with their custom 2017 Polaris RZR XP 1000 Turbo 4-seater dubbed the TSA3. In short, they took this already beast of a machine and added plenty of class and character. Nothing was overlooked when it came to modifications - lights, audio, interior, and exterior components were all given attention. They then took things one step further by custom powder coating the machine from front to back. No doubt, the TSA3 definitely has plenty sex appeal and is one of those machines built for attention…and deserves it!

LIGHTING

As you can tell from the photos, the TSA3 was custom painted from tip to tail - the roll cage, A-arms, rock sliders, bumpers, and even the wheels were given a splash. The TSA3 was custom powder coated by Magnetic Kote and they started out with a chrome base and added a candy pink layer over the top. Not stopping there, they integrated a white powder coat over the A-arms, wheels, and lighting systems. Magnetic Kote also custom painted the hood, doors, and roof in a purple powder flake.

Trail Star Audio attached a pair of Heretic studio LED headlights and also strapped on a pair of Heretic LED taillights. As you can tell, these headlights/taillights are far from stock, providing a wide range of visibility. Attached to the front roll cage on the driver and passenger side is a pair of Heretic Studio Billet Quattro LED Cube lights. And that’s not all, on the top of the roll cage is a 30-inch Heretic Wraith LED light bar that puts out 27,500 lumens per 10-inches. If night riding is your thing, this is the ultimate set-up.

Audio Being an audio company, you know the TSA3 has a top-of-the-line sound system designed to make the back of your hair stick up. The 4-rear tower speakers on the TSA3 are from Wet Sound Revolution, and are able to project volume up to 80-feet through their extensive acoustic abilities. The interior speakers consist of Wet Sounds Revolution 8 Speakers, and they not only add character with the matching white but also provide top of the line sound. CHASSIS The customization doesn’t stop with just the lighting and audio, the front and rear seats are PRP XC Series seats and include PRP harnesses custom wrapped to match the color scheme of the machine. The exterior of the machine includes BM’s fabrications Rock Sliders and front/ rear bumpers, all of which have been powder-coated candy pink. The wheels are Fuel rims wrapped with a pair of EFX Performance tires. And last but not least a Heretic Steering wheel adds control and customization in the palm of your hands. HONDA CANADA SHOWCASES PIONEER 1000’S AT TORONTO INDY FOR 2ND STRAIGHT YEAR

Hond Canada’s ATV & Power Equipment division brought out a fleet of uniquely wrapped Pioneer 1000’s to showcase Honda a at this year’s Honda Indy Toronto. Rather than parking their units for display throughout the event grounds, Honda invited representatives from various organizations to pilot the Pioneers. Each Pioneer also had a special passenger, as the drivers climbed inside the bed of their personalized units for the parade lap during opening ceremonies. We were fortunate enough to get the call from Kim Moore at Honda to pilot the Pioneer showcasing former Toronto Indy winner Will Power. Unfortunately Will crashed out on the opening lap of the actual race however but thankfully he made it through our parade lap safe and sound.

ROUND 4 OF FLAT TRACK CANADA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES AT FLAMBORO DOWNS

Photos b by: WCG Photography, J Downie Photography, and David Dudley TThe Canadian National Championship Flat Track Series rolled into Flamboro Downs in Dundas, Ontario back on August 5th. This is only the second year this facility has been a stop on the national tour. Typically this venue is known as one of the finest standardbred racing facilities but on this weekend the jockeys would be riding bikes and ATV’s instead. Despite gloomy weather in the hours leading up to the event, the clouds cleared and the racers hit the track for what would be a great day of action. Flat Track Canada currently offers two ATV classes on the national schedule to compliment their 10 motorcycle classes and deliver a full day of racing to spectators. With the series just over the halfway point, it’s still anyone’s title to claim in the ATV Open class. Whether you’re a racer or a spectator, more information on Flat Track Canadam head over to www.flattrackcanada.com.

Peter Grison currently sits 3rd in the Open ATV class while carrying the #1 plate after winning the ATV National Championship in 2016, his second championship, the other coming in 2010.

Steve Wright slides his way to a 3rd place finish in his first appearance of the season

Brandon Doucette sits second in national points following the race at Flamboro Downs, his favorite track

Adam Minnie remains focused on winning the war and not necessarily the individual battles. He currently sits atop the points standing despite not having an event win this season.

Jean Fordyce – “Here is a picture of me, a 64 year old retired woman getting stuck in Bancroft, ON. I’m riding my 550 Polaris with aggressive tires and I love the Mud!!

My good friend Brentley Summers is affectionately known as Rocket Man for various reasons. He has been busy with a new baby this summer and we haven’t gotten him out on the trails in a while. We finally pinned him down and got him out on the trails in Ompah, ON by Mountain Chute - he is always good for keeping us entertained. After a brief stop to discuss the best route, I struck off around the area and found the by-pass to be perfectly fine, and I look back to see the Rocket Man had decided to head straight down the middle and try his luck. His nimble reaction saved him a soaker all save a wet foot, but needless to say, he didn’t make it!”

Rob Kelly – “It began as a typical family ride day in early spring. The mud was deep and the sun was shining. My daughter and her friend decided to go ahead of us (apparently we were not moving fast enough). About 3 mins later we came out to a clearing and found to two girls doing this…. (see photo) And as a good father I thought this was the perfect opportunity to sit and watch them learn the lesson of why you don’t go ‘across the ruts’. They eventually got it unstuck and we continued on with our day... With some more muddier than others!”

Alex Laffrenier – “This was me getting my friends Arctic Cat Stuck in the mud. It took 4 hours to dig it out. I lost my shoe and my wedding ring in the process.”

Keith Lavallee – “My brother Guy Lavallee and his wife Natasha getting stuck in southfrontenac ontario with there sportsman 500 trying to follow me in my general 1000, they had to remove their helmets since it took so long waiting for help out.”

HONDA ATC 250R

The Honda ATC 250R is one of the most iconic three wheelers, most noted for being the one that started the three wheeler racing revolution. Honda revolutionized the ATC 250R by building it from the ground up in 1985 with an all-new chassis and a lightweight 246cc liquid cooled engine that produced 40% more horsepower than the previous model. With the added performance increase comes a six speed close ratio transmission, heavy-duty manual clutch, and a gear driven counter balancer that reduces vibration. A massive set of 39mm front forks was strapped on giving it 9.8 inches of travel and a rear pro link suspension system that includes adjustments for 17 compressions and 12 rebound settings. With all of this you can see why in the race seen the Honda ATC 250R was the one to beat.

TIGER 500

The beasts of all beasts, the Tiger 500 is the most violent, yet rarest and fastest production 3 wheeler’s ever made. Pure arm ripping power from its Rotax 482cc aircooled reed valve two-stroke engine that can hit a speed of 85mph and with a slit gear change can even reach 95mph. The Tiger 500’s engine was mounted into a similar frame of the 200 and 250cc models, with just some slight dimension changes to the rear frame thickness and wheelbase. Other than the dimension changes it’s the same magnificently crafted Tiger that features 40mm Marzocchi front forks, a rear twin Fox clicker shock, and Grimeca hydraulic disc brakes. With the entire machine having a dry weight of just 280 pounds, is the Tigre 500 too much to handle?

YAMAHA TRI-Z 250

To keep up with the ever demanding need for more speed and power from the public, Yamaha brought out its first high performance ATV (3-wheeler) the 1985 Tri-Z 250. This high performance YZ based three-wheeler had a liquid-cooled 250cc 2-stroke engine, front and rear hydraulic disc brakes, air assist front forks, and rear Monoshock suspension. Yamaha designed the Tri-Z 250 to have a lower center of gravity because of the location of the gas tank underneath the seat. The 1985 Tri-Z 250 had a 5-speed transmission that can hit a speed of 65- 70mph and in 1986 was converted to a 6-speed transmission.

HONDA ATC 350X

For the riders who where looking for more torque out of there three wheeler, the Honda ATC 350X was not to be over looked and became one of the favourites among Honda four-stroke ATV enthusiasts. With its 350cc OHC four valve, four-stroke oil cooled engine that had air scoops and aerodynamically designed front fender to keep the engine cool all day, giving you plenty of torque when you needed it. To help with cornering Honda incorporated larger diameter, narrow front tire for precise cornering, while also bumping up the stopping power with hydraulic disc brakes in the front and rear. Yet with all of the high performance options it was still easy to start with its kick-starter, automotive compression release, and solid-state CD ignition.

KAWASAKI KXT 250 TECATE

When it comes to handling and control the Kawasaki KXT 250 Tecate is at the top of the list in the 250cc category because of its overall weight at 284 pounds and class leading 9.2:1 compression ratio that adds more power throughout the rev range. At the time Kawasaki was the only one to have a dual stage power valve that increased the mid-range power band giving it the ability to hook up faster after coming out of a corner. At the front is a pair of super-rigid adjustable 41mm fork that delivers 9.8 inches of travel, with a 4-way compression damping, 23 way rebound damping fully adjustable Uni-Trak in the rear. The Kawasaki KXT 250 Tecate is for riders who strictly want to just go out and have fun!

IF THEY COULD SEE US NOW T

he “they” I am referring to are the Forefathers of Confedera on. With Canada and Ontario celebrating 150 Years this year, what it was like back then compared to the amazing country we have today, was most likely not even imaginable to our ancestors. We truly have had an amazing 150 years since Canada’s incep on in 1867. We have made some mistakes as a young na on, but there is no doubt that we Canadian’s learn from our mistakes and build on our successes. When we look at what we have contributed to the world the list goes on and on. Here are some of those inven ons invented by some awesome Canadians over the last 150 years. In no par cular order; the telephone, the light bulb, insulin, Cobalt-60 Cancer Treatment, the Robertson head screw, the snowmobile, the zipper, the ar ficial pacemaker, the electric wheelchair, radio voice transmission, the retractable beer carton handle, Pablum, the walkie talkie, alkaline ba eries, basketball, lacrosse, the snowblower, the

The snowmobile was invented out of a necessity that secondary roads were not plowed by the municipality during the winter months. I wonder if Joseph-Armand Bombardier could ever have imagined how his inven on and company would affect not only Canada but the world.

paint roller, the goalie mask, fighter pilot G-Suits, the Wonderbra, Superman, instant mashed potatoes and of course pou ne. The preceding list only scratches the surface. These and other inven ons may have been the efforts of individuals, companies or organiza ons that have had and con nue to have a profound influence on our society. We also have used some of these organiza ons to change and improve our overall standard of life. Let’s take skilled trades and appren ceship for instance. This can be traced back to the 1880’s when the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was being built. Ontario was actually the first province to regulate appren ces star ng in 1928 by enac ng the Apprenceship Act then changing it to the improved and updated Appren ceship and Qualifica on Act of 1964. In an effort to protect the public, in1944 the first compulsory trade that a person was required to be licenced in was Motor Vehicle Repair. As the province con nued to grow, so did the list of compulsory trades and so forth up to today. In many ways we as Canadians lead the way and do not follow in other’s footprints. Currently there is a lot of work being done in Ontario to upgrade and train the Technicians responsible for maintaining and repairing our recrea onal power sport equipment. This includes but certainly not limited to ATV’s, Side by Sides, snowmobiles, personal watercra and off-road motorcycles. This is primarily due to the technological advancement and growth that this industry is currently experiencing each and every year. Anyone that owns one of these vehicles can a est to the fact that the last ten years has completely changed the knowledge requirement of the person working in the shop. Granted that most manufacturers do a good job of new model training, but the government appren ceship will standardize the level of competency across the board. The organiza on that is responsible for this task is known as the Ontario College of Trades. This organiza on is a governing body, (like the College of Physicians) and not an actual college you can a end. This organiza on has been taking some hits since its incep on due to some misunderstanding and the good work it is doing is not being recognized. The Ontario College of Trades (OCOT) is rela vely a new governing body and has had its share of growing pains, but in no way should this take away from the important or posi ve

I can remember star ng Grade 1 in the fall of 1967 in Sundridge, Ontario. At that me we received mementos and a hot dog BBQ from the Federal Government. That school is gone and replaced with a new one as with many of the things that I remember.

influence it has given to almost every aspect to our everyday life. The need for this governing body started to become more and more relevant for a combinaধon of reasons just over a decade ago. There were many changes and needs required by the large spectrum of industries found in Ontario, consumer protecধon group concerns were being brought forward as well as the public sector cutbacks in the early to mid-2000’s that were responsible for regulaধng trades and apprenধceship really started to come to light. In 2007, a company, Armstrong Consulধng was given the task by the provincial government to invesধgate what was required. This was done with stakeholder, public and industry input. You can find the Armstrong Report on the Ontario College of Trades website. That led to Whitaker Report by Kevin Whitaker, Chair of the Ontario Labour Relaধons Board in 2009. On October 27, 2009, the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenধceship Act, 2009 received Royal Assent and became the governing authority over trades in the Province of Ontario. The College has the mandate and powers to regulate all the approved trades in Ontario and will handle the regulatory funcধons relaধng to the following: (i) (ii)

Issuing licences and certificates of memberships Protecting the public interest through investigation and discipline mechanisms (iii) Setting standards for training and certification (iv) Conducting research and collecting relevant data to support future apprenticeship and certification policies (v) Removing barriers and increasing access for internationally trained workers

“You can find a copy of the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenধceship Act, 2009 on the OCOT website at www. collegeođrades.ca . This website has a lot of other informaধon for members and the general public as well. If you qualify as a member and are not a member yet, what are you waiধng for?

Building a railway across Canada is one of the first major accomplishments of our na on. The human cost was enormous. Even with all our technology today, would we even consider taking on this type project? It was even finished years ahead of schedule.

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 4

To give you an idea of the scope the College has to deal with, there are over 150 recognized trades in Ontario in the Construcধon, Industrial, Moধve Power and Service industries that the College is responsible for. Of these, 23 are compulsory. A Compulsory Trade is a trade in which registraধon (College membership) as an apprenধce, journeyperson candidate or cerধficaধon as a journeyperson is mandatory. Examples of these trades would be Automoধve Service Technician or Motorcycle Technician. The rest are classified as Voluntary Trades in which cerধficaধon and College membership are not legally required to pracধce the trade. Examples of these trades would be Small Engine Technician or Marine Engine Technician. As a Technician in the Moধve Power Profession I am glad that they are there monitoring the ever changing technology and needs of the Moধve Power Industry, working for my rights and working to ensure the best interests of the public. So the next ধme you need a Vehicle Technician, Plumber, Electrician, Carpenter or a Hair Stylist, ask if they are a member of the Ontario College of Trades, it is part of the reason Canadian Trades People are recognised worldwide. Happy Birthday Canada, I can’t wait to see what we achieve over the next 25 years!

The Ontario College of Trades will ensure that changes to the Construc on, Industrial, Mo ve Power and Service Industries will be addressed as we move forward through the next decade and beyond. Check out their website.

This recrea onal engine from Polaris Industries shows why it is important to have Technicians trained to the highest standards. This liquid cooled engine has double overhead cams, an oil cooler, turbo charging with intercooling, and a thro le body with fuel injec on. You need to know what you are doing if you are going to service this engine. It is a far cry from the engines of a few years ago.

Better Than Recycling - Re-Purpose It

Prevention Is Key

Keep and reuse the plastic spout off of your gear lube bottles or your engine oil bottles. This will eliminate the need for a funnel and keep you from spilling on your engine cases.

Be sure to use anti-seize on any exhaust bolts, because extreme heat will speed up the corrosion or seizing process without it. Remove them one at a time, coat the threads, and re-torque them.

Homemade Tap

3

If you need to tap or re-tap aluminum and don’t have the proper tap, you can cut slots with a cutoff wheel into the threads of the proper sized, high-grade bolt. You might have to use a couple of bolts if you’re cutting a lot of threads.

Preventative Maintenance

4

Remove your swing arm pivot bolt periodically to grease it. This often gets overlooked and is a huge pain in the rear when it gets seized to the swing arm bearings, and you need to get the swing arm off for any reason.

Blast It Beforehand

PB Blaster can be a lifesaver on many different types of ATV and UTV projects; it penetrates and lubes the threads, as well dissolving metal corrosion. The key is to soak the potential problem bolts before you go stripping the heads off them.

6

Stainless Steel Hardware Upgrade

The stock, mild steel hardware on most ATVs and UTVs is prone to rust and corrosion. If your machine will see a lot of muddy and wet riding, you can replace problematic hardware with stainless steel bolts before they give you problems

Keep It Tight

A Fresh One Every Time

ATV axle nuts are known for getting loose and causing problems on the trail. Make sure it is properly tightened before every ride. You can even wrap it tightly with electrical tape to help keep it tight.

The exhaust crush gasket should be replaced every time you remove the exhaust header from the head. If you don’t have one, and it’s not completely flat, you can flip it over and re-use, but be wary of exhaust leaks here.

SERVICING A DIESEL RANGER O

il changes are one of those basic maintenance items that should never be overlooked. Engine oil is like the blood of your vehicle and solely responsible for lubricating all its internal moving parts. Whether it’s your UTV, ATV, dirt bike, or even the family minivan, engine oil breaks down quickly and is vital to its survival. Most ATV and UTV enthusiasts seem to be a little more mechanically inclined than average folks, and should be more than capable of tackling an oil change on their own. But what if it’s a diesel? A diesel engine might seem like a little more like dabbling into the unknown, but in reality, basic maintenance is exactly the same. We broke down an oil change on an older Polaris Ranger Diesel 900, which is also exactly the same process as the current Polaris Ranger Diesel 1000s. Another convenient thing about the Diesel Ranger is that it uses the same spin-on oil filter as every other gasoline powered Polaris UTV, including the RZR and RZR XP1000. We used the K&N Filter’s oil filter Part # KN-198, which is also happens to be available at most major automotive parts stores. If you have a Polaris dealership nearby, you can get the stock Polaris filter for about the same money, as well as the Polaris Diesel Oil. If not, you can also find 15-40 Diesel oil like Rotella or Delo-400 just about anywhere.

1

2

Start with a reasonably clean machine, and then warm up the oil by starting the engine and letting it idle for a minute or two. You don’t want it too hot as it will be harder to work on, but you do want the oil thinned out enough to drain thoroughly. 52

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 4

want either the Polaris Diesel oil, or 15-40 automotive diesel oil. It’s going to take about 2.25 to 2.5 quarts.

3 With the drain pan in place, and hopefully with no wind or working in the garage, you will pull the drain plug with an 8mm Allen wrench. We would recommend disposable rubber gloves for undoing the final few threads if you don’t want used oil all over your hands. Be sure to hold onto the drain plug and don’t drop it into the pan.

5 The oil filter is located on the bottom passenger side of the engine. You should be able to loosen it with your hands, but it can be pretty tight. If it’s too tight, you can loosen it with an oil filter wrench, or even big channel-locks. Tilt the filter up and bring it out the top to avoid any extra mess. Make sure you have the oil pan where it will catch any oil spilled from the filter, and we like to stuff a few paper towels on top of the skid plate and under the filter as well.

4 You can wipe the drain plug clean with a rag or paper towel and then set it aside. Remove the oil fill plug to eliminate any possible vacuum and to speed up the drainage process.

6 Be sure that the old rubber gasket remains on the old oil filter and dispose of it properly. Lubricate the rubber seal on the new oil filter with your finger dipped in fresh oil. Spin on the new oil filter, tightening it down; hand tight will be enough.

Wipe up any extra oil mess from the skid plate drain area. Replace the drain plug back into the bottom of the engine oil pan, and use the 8mm Allen wrench to tighten. You will also want to inspect the copper crush washer “gasket” to make sure it is still good; if not, replace it.

Use a funnel to carefully pour oil into the engine oil fill hole. You can initially pour 2.25 quarts of oil into the motor. Then start the engine to let the oil circulate and fill the oil filter before checking the level.

9 Start and run the engine for a good minute or so, then shut it off. Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean and then fully reinsert and pull it out again. This reading should be accurate. If the level is at or very close to the full mark you are done, if it is low, you can add a few more ounces and check it again.

By design, the pleated paper air filter is a nonserviceable item, but you should still inspect it every time you service the machine, as well as in between oil changes if you are in extremely dusty conditions. While it can’t really be cleaned, you can pull it out and knock it on the concrete or even blow compressed air from the inside out to help extend its life expectancy. The airbox is held closed with four simple, tool-free clips, and the filter comes out with your bare hands.

forward a little more than a year later, and the first signs of an all-new ARGO have been unveiled. Having grown more comfortable with his role as president, Darling addressed the media in attendance in Minnesota, and unveiled a new line of ARGO ATVs; built on full-size frames; equipped with premium equipment; and priced right. ARGO is entering the market with a fully-loaded arsenal of models too. The 2018 line features three unique models available in various trim

levels and two fuel-injected powerplants – a single cylinder 503cc and a big-bore, twin-cylinder 997cc. Perhaps more importantly, all models follow a simple formula that ARGO believes will lead to success for year one and beyond - a rugged, full-size frame; premium wheels, tires, and suspension; an efficient and effective 4-wheel drive system; and the inclusion of the most coveted features, all at value pricing, making ARGO too good to ignore.

With six models in the 500 category, and only one in the big-bore 1000, it’s clear the mid-size market is where ARGO is looking to make the most noise. Staff members from ATV World had an opportunity to be some of the first to sample the new ARGO Xplorer ATV this summer, and we became immediate believers. Here’s an in-depth, visual look at the new models, along with our first ride impressions.

BUILT ON FULL-SIZE FRAMES; EQUIPPED WITH PREMIUM EQUIPMENT; AND PRICED RIGHT

Undoubtedly, the ARGO Xplorer XR500LE will be the most popular model in the 2018 ARGO offering, with its fullsize frame, 14-inch aluminum wheels, and standard Tri-Mode power steering. Other models include the two-up Xplorer XRT 500 available in base, EPS, and fully optioned LE versions; the standalone big-bore XRT 1000LE; and the price point XR500 ($5,999 US // $7,399 CAN), or the XR500 with EPS ($6,899 US // $8399 CAN).

NORTH AMERICAN DESIGNED, TESTED, AND BACKED WITH A 3-YEAR WARRANTY Of course, the big question everyone was asking upon first glance is just what or who is an Xplorer ATV. The ARGO crew didn’t try to pull any punches when asked the question, and as a matter of fact, they were very forthright by disclosing the new quad is a product developed jointly with Taiwan manufacturer TGB. ARGO president Brad Darling was quick to point out that this wasn’t simply a rebadged ATV, but rather a line of quads co-developed to ARGO’s unique specifications for the North American market. TGB is a powerhouse manufacturer in Taiwan, and is well known for their engine and powertrain ertrain expertise, specifically CVT clutches. s. ARGO engineers played a pivotal role in n the development of the suspension, power-steering, ower-steering, wheels, tires, and towing ng and carrying capacities of the Xplorer, as well as accelerated vehicle testing using both chassis dynos and in-the-field d testing in Canada. What’s more, ARGO iss ready to stand behind the product with parts, arts, service, and technical assistance from m their Canadian headquarters, not to o mention a full, 3-year bumper-to-bumper mper warranty.

STACKING THEM UP ARGO understands entering the well-established ATV market won’t be easy, but they have developed a mid-bore ATV designed to best the big players in the category by offering more at a better value.

BEAUTY AND BEAST The front view of the XR500LE illustrates the blending of ARGO features with existing elements of the TGB built quad. The projector beam lights and faux led strip lighting have become key design elements of many off-shore ATVs, but the oversize, solid steel bumper and front rack are clear influences from ARGO. With a 50-year legacy of the go anywhere XTV, ARGO knows their new ATVs have to be rugged and ready to perform.

COMFORT AND CAPABILITY The key areas of ARGO influence with the new Xplorer ATVs is where the rubber meets the dirt. Tires and suspension were critical components for the new quads, and the suspension features a significant amount of ride-in (sag), which keeps the center of gravity low, and gives the vehicle a plush ride quality. Engineers are quick to point out however, that the softer ride and lower ride height doesn’t negatively impact ground clearance, or the vehicles ability to carry and haul big loads.

STEEL TUBE TOUGHNESS ARGO opted to go with a traditional steel tube rack up front versus a more stylish composite design. According to company president Brad Darling, toughness is a primary objective behind the new ATV line.

COMFORTABLE AND REFINED COCKPIT The view from atop on the XR500LE shows all the key controls are located front and center and the driver’s area is comfortably narrow, despite being a full-sized frame vehicle. Fit and finish rivals that of Japanese makers.

DUAL EXHAUST DETAIL Attention to detail and style such as the chrome tipped, dual exhaust silencer at the rear, certainly doesn’t give you the impression that these are value priced ATVs.

165-POUND CAPACITY More keep-it-simple and rugged engineering is found at the rear, where another oversized steel rack is found. The rear rack is capable of hauling up to 165-lbs (75kg) of gear, while the front is rated for 99-lbs (45kg).

USER ADJUSTABLE POWER STEERING A full-digital gauge provides plenty of information to the driver, and it’s also where you can make adjustments to the TriMode Speed Sensitive Electronic Power Steering (TMSS-EPS). Beyond being a speed sensitive system, it’s also user adjustable by selecting no assist, minimum assist, or maximum assist from the digital display. 62

DUAL A-ARM SUSPENSION TUNED FOR COMFORT All models featuring a dual A-arm rear suspension with adjustable coil-over shocks. Having the shock mounted to the lower A-arm is a unique design feature of the ARGO Xplorer models. This gives the shock greater piston travel ratio and a more progressive rate, allowing engineers to better tune the suspension for greater comfort and capability.

PREMIUM TIRES ARGO made it clear that considerable time and moneyy was invested in selecting tiress for the Xplorer. Where most value ue priced quads may “cheap-out” t” in this area, ARGO engineers tell us the Innova tires are premium components, and when mated with the 14-inch aluminum wheels (shown here), found on all LE models, makes for a top of the line combination that’s hard to beat. The standard models feature 12-inch steel wheels.

GO WHERE NO OTHER VEHICLE DARES TO TREAD While the ATVs were the stars of the show for the media intro, ARGO’s bread and butter remains the go anywhere XTV vehicles. For 2018, the ARGO team has simplified the line-up and split the offerings into a wide range of recreational vehicles in three trim and performance levels (Frontier, Avenger, and Conquest); and a smaller offering of commercial vehicles, aptly dipped in a highvisibility yellow hue. A small sampling was at our testing disposal. There is no other vehicle on the planet quite like an ARGO XTV, with its amphibious capabilities…it’s the most fun you can have at 21-miles per hour. SMOOTH AND PREDICTABLE HANDLING One of the best and most unique features of the new ARGO ATV line-up is the Tri-Mode Speed Sensitive, (TMSS) Electronic Power Steering (EPS). Like most power steering systems available within the off-road industry, the TMSS version is speed sensitive, meaning it increases or decreases the amount of assist, based upon vehicle speed. However, the ARGO version takes this another step further by allowing the user to choose the level of assist by selecting one of three power steering modes – no assist, minimum assist, and maximum assist.

BRAD DARLING, ARGO PRESIDENT

The off-road market already has several major manufacturers in place. Why enter the market now and where do you see ARGO fitting in? That’s a good question…and I can tell you we’ve spent a lot of time studying the market to make sure this is the right move for us. We want to give our dealers the opportunity to be more with ARGO. When we looked at the ATV market we saw some big voids and the first one we saw was in the 500 class. Everyone in the industry used to have a 500, or a 450, or a 550 machine in that category with a full-size frame. But they have all taken that product and either went up in price and kept the full-size frame and added a bigger engine, or they went down in size to what the industry calls a mid-size frame. We learned a lot of customers want a full-size frame, but they don’t need the bigger motor nor do they want to pay more. We saw the opportunity for a full-size vehicle with the right size motor and the right features. The major manufacturers are driving the price point of these vehicles, but if we can deliver an ATV that offers more, is competitive, and doesn’t cheap out the features for the right price we can carve out a nice little niche for ourselves.

72

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 4

What is that price? In the US it’s $5,999 and $7,399 in Canada…that’s the price of our base model Xplorer XR500, and that will include a 3-year bumper-tobumper warranty. You also have a 1,000cc two-up vehicle. Did you see an opportunity for that as well? When we looked at our dealer mix, we found many of them also have Japanese brand ATVs. When you think about their (Japanese brands) product offering, they typically don’t have big displacement vehicles and they also don’t offer two-up. There’s also a brand validity statement you make when you can offer multiple models and have a big-displacement ATV in the mix. From the outside looking in, I think most would ask the question why an ATV, why not a side-by-side? When you think about a side-by-side and how it’s used, an ARGO XTV is actually a very good replacement for a utility sideby-side, but not an ATV. In our ownership studies, we learned 21% who currently own an ARGO also own a side-by-side… but 66% own an ATV. So, if you think about it that way, we’re already in the side-by-side business, just not in the same way as a traditional side-by-side.

WE PUT ON QUALITY TIRES. THEN WE WENT TO THE SUSPENSION AND REALLY WORKED ON THE RIDE QUALITY AND CAPABILITY.

YOU CAN’T BUY THIS ATV ANYWHERE OUTSIDE NORTH AMERICA… THIS ATV IS EXCLUSIVE TO ARGO.

The new Xplorer is being manufactured by TPG in Tawain. How much input did ARGO have on the development of the vehicle? Honestly, we started with a nice platform…TPG builds a great ATV. However, our team looked at that and started to pick it apart and looked at the features that our customers would want in an ATV. We started with tires… we put on quality tires. Then we went to the suspension and really worked on the ride quality and capability. Then it was features…we knew we wanted 4x4 capabilities with a differential lock. You can’t buy this ATV anywhere outside north America…this ATV is exclusive to ARGO. If you could only talk about three things that really differentiate the ARGO Xplorer from anything else in the marketplace, what would you say? Full-size…that would be the first thing… then I’d talk about handling, suspension, and tires. Full-size gets us into the category and why we are here. Then it’s tires, suspension, and the four-wheel drive system…those are the things that everybody wants to know about. Those are the things that matter most, and if potential customers like what they hear that will put ARGO firmly into the conversation.

Parts and service is a big deal for customers and it has been an issue for some brands, especially those coming from overseas that are not as established in North America. What is ARGO doing to address this? The only person you can blame when it comes to having inadequate parts and service is yourself. I can tell you we are going to be over-inventoried when the Xplorer hits the market. We’ve done substantial testing but still you never really know until it gets into the field. But we are really confident, and we will be offering a full three-year in-house warranty…not aftermarket. We’re committed to the ATV market; and parts, service, and warranty work will be handled through our Canadian headquarters. What’s down the road… what’s next for ARGO? If I shared with you that 64% of our dealers were interested in adding an ATV, and over 60% were also interested in a side-by-side, what’s the next thing we’re going to be looking at? (laughter). What about the original ARGO, the XTV…how do you keep focus on that product and ensure your always progressing the product? The XTV is our core business…we can never lose that focus nor do we want to change that…we want to triple the XTV business by 2020. We’ve been doing a lot of research with our customers and what we’ve learned is half don’t want us to mess with the original ARGO…they love it. But there’s another group that wants more...what does that mean? That’s what we are researching and developing to find out. Maybe it’s an ARGO that steers…maybe it’s an ARGO that handles better…maybe it looks different…maybe it has more horsepower. What I can say is we are really doing our homework when it comes to the future of the ARGO XTV… we are being very careful and we are making sure it’s a consumer driven process.

AS WE’RE SURE YOU’VE NOTICED, the high-performance UTV or Side-by-Side market is exploding right now. They represent the fastest growing segments in Off-Road, and probably the entire Powersports world as well. Polaris has been leading the pack with RZR, and many other big OEMs keep firing back with continued efforts to one-up the competition. Bigger numbers have been the name of the game, and more HP, suspension, and wheel travel has been garnering all the attention.

WITH

OEMs fighting for “High Performance Supremacy”, the latest scuffle ensued with the release of Can-Am’s Maverick X3 XRS. The current crop of RZR XP 1000s, Wildcats, and YXZ 1000Rs were all measuring close to 64”s wide with 16 to 18 inches of wheel travel. Wider track widths and more suspension travel was available in the form of aftermarket suspension kits, but with kits averaging $4,000-$7,000, you were definitely going to pay for the luxury. Most of these long travel kits added between 3-5 inches per side, requiring A-arms, tie rods, trailing arms, radius rods, and new shocks. The 2017 Can Am X3 XRS hit the market right in the middle

76

with the equivalent of +4” per side, fully adjustable FOX suspension, and 154 HP. This was a solid ten horsepower more than the 2016 Polaris XP Turbo, and priced way less than outfitting one with “race width” long travel suspension. Just a few short weeks after Can-Am dropped the ground-breaking Maverick X3 XRS, Polaris answered back with a drastically improved 2017 model year RZR XP Turbo. As most of you know, it didn’t get a radically new, wider suspension platform like the X3, but it did get a huge boost in engine performance and a laundry list of other improvements. Polaris twisted the 17 RZR Turbo up to 168 HP, as well as improving the cooling,

clutching, and drive train for increased durability and reliability. The 2017 RZR XP Turbo was clearly the fastest production UTV to date, and Polaris has truly worked out the first model year bugs from the 16 Turbo. Even with a machine this great, there still were skeptics arguing that they missed the boat on the race width version. With the 2018 models on the way, most UTV insiders assumed that the big news from Polaris would be just that, a new platform with increased width, wheelbase, and wheel travel. As it turns out, Polaris had a completely different idea up their sleeve, and they’d been working on it for more than two years.

THE DYNAMIX SUSPENSION SYSTEM MAKES ACTIVE LOW AND HIGH-SPEED COMPRESSION ADJUSTMENTS TO IMPROVE CORNERING; BRAKING; ACCELERATING; DRIVING AT SPEED AND JUMPING

atvworld DYNAMIX SUSPENSION The 2018 RZR Dynamix Edition RZR XP is the first UTV to hit the market with a truly smart and active suspension system. What does this mean? In short, Polaris engineers have colluded with the crew at FOX Racing Suspension to develop the very first off-road specific, intelligent suspension system. FOX developed the Dynamix specific internal bypass shocks, and Polaris designed a software system to control them. The system integrates with Polaris’ 7” touch screen, Ride Command display, using Bluetooth to make drastic changes to the compression settings on each corresponding “Live Valve” shock. The “intelligent” part is how the Dynamix Edition creates a more confident and comfortable ride. The DYNAMIX suspension system makes active low and high-speed compression adjustments to

78

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 4

improve cornering; braking; accelerating; driving at speed and jumping. This is the first and only suspension to adjust on-the-fly, for the best possible ride at every moment. Dynamix uses sophisticated sensors to monitor seven different vehicle inputs like braking, steering angle, and throttle application, and then it makes corresponding adjustments at a rate of 200 times a second to optimize your ride quality. This Dynamix system integrates with the Ride command display, giving the user full visibility of what’s going on. The Dynamix Visualizer screen illustrates your shock firmness at each wheel and your steering wheel position. The system truly improves drivability and confidence by stiffening up the outside shocks as you turn, all but eliminating body roll. Another really cool function is that it will go full

stiff on the front shocks when you stab the brakes; this both eliminates front end dive, and really helps with those bigger g-outs, and last minute obstacles. This same feature keeps the front shocks full stiff for a second and a half after releasing the brakes. This is a great feature because you can stab the brakes to slow for a g-out that sneaks up on you, but still get back on the gas at the last second to keep momentum up. Once you realize how effective this is, you will train yourself to quickly stab and release the brakes anytime you are about to hit anything abusive. The Dynamix system adds compression to the rear under full throttle acceleration to avoid squatting and increase traction. In the air, the system senses full shock droop, and adds compression at all four corners for increased bottoming resistance and control upon landing.

IN-CAB REAL-TIME ADJUSTMENT Polaris uses this same Dynamic technology and Bluetooth adjustability to offer in-cab suspension setting options. The dash-mounted switch allows the driver to toggle instantly between three extremely different suspension settings. The “Comfort” setting completely backs out the compression on all four corners for slow, comfortable cruising, where things like body roll and impact absorption aren’t really needed. This setting is ultra plush, and really great for soaking up small chatter to about 15 mph. Any faster and you’re going to want to bump it up to the “Sport” setting. The

sport setting is what Polaris calls “the ultimate blend of performance, comfort, and high-speed handling”. This is also where you will really notice the “intelligent” or “active” features of the Dynamix suspension. If you are rock crawling, or hitting

obstacles extremely hard, you can toggle it into the “Firm” mode. This Firm setting is full compression on all four corners, and it also significantly raises the ride height of the RZR, giving it a substantial increase in ground clearance.

THE 660-WATT SYSTEM ON THE PREVIOUS XP TURBO MODELS WAS THE WEAK LINK WITH ANYONE TRYING TO RUN AN ENDURANCE RACE, OR EVEN JUST REALLY ACCESSORIZE THEIR MACHINES. 80

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 4

OTHER BIG NEWS WITH DYNAMIX! The Dynamix Edition is obviously centered on the revolutionary new intelligent suspension system, and we have been in love with the Ride Command system since its induction in the 2017 model year. Looking merely at the specs, one might think that Polaris had settled right there, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. With all this new technology, Polaris engineers also developed a completely new 900-watt charging system. The 660-watt system on the previous XP Turbo models was the weak link with anyone trying to run an endurance race, or even just really accessorize their machines. The 660 watt system was pretty much used up with stock needs like EFI, cooling fans and headlights, and there wasn’t much left for radios, GPS, light bars, etc., etc. This shortage of available extra wattage has proven extremely troublesome for the desert racing crowd as well as the hardcore dune guys. The only option has been to limit electrical accessories, or add

an automotive type external alternator. UTV INC has perfected this set-up with its own billet side case and belt driven alternator, but at close to two grand, it’s an incredibly expensive option. We asked the Polaris engineers if this new 900-watt system would work as an upgrade to the 16-17 turbo, but they said it won’t be a direct plug-in as it utilizes a completely different wire harness. We look forward to seeing what the aftermarket guys or racing teams can come up with in the way of an adapter, or another way to utilize it. Polaris engineers also explained that they have drastically improved the drive train chatter and durability issues with a larger, higher quality driveshaft carrier bearing. The billet aftermarket ones from SuperATV or SandCraft have proven their worth over the past few years, and Polaris opted to carry this improvement over the entire line of RZR and general vehicles for 2018.

atvworld DYNAMIC SUSPENSION HANDLING The Dynamix Edition is obviously centered on the revolutionary new intelligent suspension system, and we have been in love with the Ride Command system since its induction in the 2017 model year. The only option has been to limit electrical accessories, or add an automotive type external alternator. UTV INC has perfected this set-up with its own billet side case and belt driven alternator, but at close to two grand, it’s an incredibly expensive option. We asked the Polaris engineers if this new 900-watt system would work as an upgrade to the 1617 turbo, but they said it won’t be a direct plug-in as it utilizes a completely different wire harness.

TRUE-LIFE ACTIVE SUSPENSION The DYNAMIX system reacts instantly to your driving input and optimizes the suspension settings for every move. The smart/active suspension technology will increase confidence and trail comfort for anyone, from the average to advanced driver. This system is amazingly effective, and regardless of whether you are watching it work on the display screen or not, it is always working and improving your ride. The system automatically stiffens up the outside two shocks while cornering and truly minimizes body roll, and keeps the RZR flatter in the corners than anything we’ve ever driven before.

OVERALL IMPRESSION The overall ride quality with the Dynamix Edition is better than anything we’ve experienced yet. Being able to kick a UTV into a comfort setting and immediately be utilizing low speed cruising suspension characteristics, brings a whole new level of comfort. The intelligent “active” suspension will definitely improve the whole driving experience for most everyone that rides one. We were super hopeful to see a 72” “Super RZR”, but they completely blindsided us with this new technology, and it’s truly going to be a huge deal for the entire industry. Another really cool thing to think about is the doors that it will open. While this initial release has only the three factory settings, it probably won’t be long until we see options for fine-tuning or adjusting these pre-sets to truly customize your ride from the drivers seat.

apparently it’s the spice of life according to some old adage, but it’s also the perfect word to describe the trail offerings found along the Haliburton ATV Association’s (HATVA) trail network that takes you through the picturesque landscape of the Haliburton Highlands. The HATVA is comprised

of over 1700km of well signed, maintained trail, with the vast majority of it found within the Haliburton Highlands region. As legislation welcoming ATV/UTV enthusiasts continues to improve in the province of Ontario, we decided to sit down with members of the HATVA to plan a multi-day exploration of their trails, to showcase what the region had to offer.

ONE

of the first things we learned when sitting down with current HATVA President Barry Lord and former President Bob Johnson, is that this club understands the importance of communicating trail difficulty. Their full color map book clearly indicates the difficulty level of trails and is incredibly easy to navigate. Orange trails are for Beginners, Blue for Intermediates, and Red for Advanced riders; it really doesn’t get much easier than that. On our last multi-day ATV trip where we wandered the EOTA, we backpacked from one destination to the next on a multi-day loop. (Check out our back issues on atvworldmag. com if you missed it) After Bob and Barry shared some of their favorite riding spots in the region with us, we decided to create three separate day-rides utilizing the same basecamp. We also noticed the balanced variety of trails catering to different skill sets, and because of this, we thought it would interesting for each day of riding to focus on trails of a

88

certain difficulty level. With the big picture ironed out for our tour, the next step was to figure out a destination to call home while in the region. Luckily, Bob and Barry made that decision relatively easy for us. Given the day trips we had planned, they suggested we head over to what the locals call Ray’s place, or what is actually known as the South Wind Motel & Campground. Now we know the word “motel” doesn’t seem appealing to some riders, but make no mistake, this is more than likely the most “off-road vehicle” friendly accommodation destination we’ve ever come across. The facility is located on 131 acres of woods, ponds, trails and rock, and the terrain on the property hasn’t gone to waste. When Ray took over the business, he had 14km of bi-directional trails, professionally designed on the property. You can easily spend multiple days wandering the Haliburton Highlands, make no mistake about it. But, if you get back to the South Wind and still

haven’t had enough riding for one day, you can fill the remaining hours of daylight by testing the limits of your skillset and machine, without even having to leave the property. With a place to call home for three days, our day trips planned out, and the dates locked in, we loaded up three units from the ATV World HQ and headed up on an early Tuesday morning to get the day started. The first unit we had with us was a 2017 Polaris General 1000 2-seater. Our editor, Nick Nelson, recently just documented his thoughts on his first 500km in the 4-seater General, and based on his feedback, we thought the 2-seater version would be a worthy buggy for this trip. The second unit in the trailer was the all-new, freshly revived 2018 Yamaha Kodiak 450. We thought it would be worthwhile to communicate that a wide variety of buggies could traverse the Canadian Shield in the Haliburton Highlands, and have fun doing so. You can’t really be on further ends of the spectrum than the General and

atvworld the Kodiak. At the end of the day, we still needed one more unit, and based on the fact that we were planning on sampling some advanced level trails, we wanted something with a winch. Logically, we picked up the phone and reached out to our friends at CF Moto, and we were able to pickup a fully loaded Z Force 800 en-route to South Wind. A huge thank you goes out to Derek Greer at Balsam RPM for helping us out with a unit for the week.

With the truck and trailer fully loaded, we headed north on Highway 35 to Minden. One of the best reasons to visit the Haliburton Highlands is the authentic Canadian landscape you can experience so conveniently close to several major cities. The ATV World HQ is only an hour and a half from Minden, so we were able to leave early enough in the morning to get a full day of riding in, without having to sacrifice a day for travel. atvworld As we arrived in the region, we were reminded of one thing every powersports enthusiast knows all too well; it’s that you can’t control Mother Nature. This summer, the Northeast has seen much more precipitation than usual. This is great for keeping the dust down, as you’d normally be jockeying for the lead position on the trails to avoid the constant dust cloud that seems to get through all layers of gear, regardless of brand. This summer however, we were treated to a tacky and loamy base that provided optimal traction and minimal dust inhalation. Now the downside to a “wetter than usual” summer

is that we were more than likely going to be riding in the rain for at least one of our days on the trail. As we turned off of Highway 35 and onto County Road 121, that’s exactly what happened. Mere minutes from our launch point to begin our first day of riding, Mother Nature unleashed what would be a total of about 15mm of rainfall. Regardless of the precipitation, there was no lightning in the area at the time, so we did what any ATV enthusiast would do, we unloaded the buggies, put on our rain suits and hit the trails. Queue day 1.

THE CANADIAN SHIELD WAS GOING TO PUT OUR MACHINES AND ABILITIES TO THE TEST

Day1 Ray’s Place Expert Excursion Originally, we had planned to start with the beginner trails on Day 1, and gradually increase the difficulty level throughout our stay in the region. With the rain falling steadily and increasing the difficulty associated with navigating the Canadian Shield, we shifted our attention to the expert level trails in the area. We had originally planned to do the infamous Miserable Lake Loop, deemed one of the most grueling and technical loops in the region. Unfortunately, the threat of lightning later in the afternoon made us think twice. The last thing you want to do is be halfway through a full day ride, and have to deal with lightning. Ray insisted his trails would offer the same degree of difficulty found on the loop, but with the convenience of us being able to abort our riding excursion at a moments notice. As it turns out, the trails on the South Wind property are actually sanctioned as part of the HATVA. With the buggies unloaded and our rain gear on, we headed for the trails at the back end of the property. One thing that became apparent very early on was that the Canadian Shield was going to put our machines and abilities to the test. Rock crawling would become a very common theme throughout the afternoon. As the rain continued to fall, we were left climbing incredibly steep and increasingly slippery inclines. The first buggy to head

down a trail would have the disadvantage of having to determine the path of least resistance. However, they would leave behind them a trail of mud stuck to the rocky landscape that our second and third riders would have to navigate. If you’ve never encountered this sort of terrain before, beware of the ice-like conditions that mud water and rock create. On more than one occasion, we had vehicles slipping sideways down an off-camber section of rocky trail. One strategy you will definitely need to adopt in trails of this caliber is scouting and guiding. For the sake of your skid plate, it’s worth the extra time to scope out the trail ahead on foot and discuss the plan of attack. We began heading down some of the extreme trails on the property like Razor and Silver. We regularly were off

our machines and guiding each other over obstacles to make sure we weren’t going to get hung up or leave traces of undercarriage behind. As we approached the end of the first section of Silver, another important tool came into play. In this region, if you’re looking to go on anything besides a beginner trail, we’d definitely recommend having a winch, and not travelling with less than two machines. Proper winching technique and safety is a must. Take our Polaris General for example, where the dry weight of our model is 1544 lbs.; you need to make sure that you are winching to something that is going to be able to stand up to that kind of weight. This is where having a second machine out with you comes into play, because sometimes the best thing to winch to is another buggy. You’ll also need to be wary of where the machine being winched could end up, should things go wrong. A few hours into our technical afternoon, the lightning that was threatening began to light up the gloomy sky,

and we quickly headed back to our cabins. Although in the short time it took us to get from the trail system to the cabins, we ended up soaked as the rainfall intensified. We were still smiling from ear to ear at the endless challenging terrain this region could clearly offer. With no end in sight for the lightning and rainfall, we decided to call it a day, park the buggies and call the Minden Taxi service. If you’re in the region and you have a taste for wheat and barley based beverages, make sure you head over to the Boshkung Social. They typically host local food vendors on site, and serve their exceptionally smooth variety of brews, crafted just up Highway 35 at their headquarters in Carnarvon. Fortunately for us, on the night we arrived we were just in time to get involved in Radio Bingo by local radio station Canoe FM. Although we weren’t lucky enough to pocket the $500 grand prize, we did pass enough time for the storm to clear, get back to South Wind, and regroup for day 2 with clear skies in the forecast.

Day 2 The “Outhouse Trail” Intermediate Adventure

BEING ON THE BLUE “INTERMEDIATE” TRAILS, WE QUICKLY NOTICED THAT WE WERE ABLE TO MOVE ALONG AT A MUCH QUICKER PACE THAN THE DAY BEFORE. 92

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 4

As dawn broke on Day 2 of our journey, we all agreed to get an early start and try to complete the longest day we had planned, the Outhouse Trail. Geared up and ready for a day on the trails, we did what any Canadian would do and headed straight for a Tim Horton’s coffee. Moments like these are when you really appreciate the fact that the region has embraced ORVs on public roads. Although you can’t ride along Highway’s 35 and 118, you are able to cross them when needed. Thanks to this, we were able to ride right up to the Tim Horton’s parking lot from South Wind Motel and coordinate our game plan for the day. Sticking with our authentically Canadian experience, we decided to gather the necessary supplies to enjoy the true Canadian wilderness with a trailside lunch at our scenic lookout destination. When examining the HATVA map, we confirmed there were designated lunch spots of particular interest on the Outhouse Trail.

After a quick stop by Home Hardware to grab a portable campfire griller, followed by a pit stop to grab some ingredients for our feast, we headed through Minden and swung a left down Scotch Line Road towards the Outhouse Trail. With no rain in the forecast for the remainder of our stay, we reached the end of the roadway and came across a staging lot for riders to launch from. These staging lots appear quite frequently throughout the Haliburton Highlands, and allow riders who want to avoid taking their buggies down roadways, a place to safely park their truck and trailer. Being on the blue “Intermediate” trails, we quickly noticed that we were able to move along at a much quicker pace than the day before. It was still very evident that the Canadian Shield comprised the heart of this region. However, the helmetsized boulders we had to navigate the day before, were fewer and farther between. Within a few minutes of being on the trail,

we came across the deepest water crossing of our entire three-day ride. It’s definitely worth paying attention to recent rainfall accumulation in the region when planning a ride here, after the substantial amount of rain the day before, we were clearly dealing with a water crossing much deeper than normal. Although we did need to stop and remove the floorboard drain plugs after safely reaching the other side, we didn’t find the crossing particularly difficult. The reason for this again relates back to the Canadian Shield. The base of the majority of the water crossings we crossed throughout our travels all had a hard bottom. While the crossings were indeed deep and required some patience, our machines stayed relatively clean throughout the day. As we continued down the trail with a steady mix of water crossing, rock crawling, and dirt trail runs, we became increasingly aware of the staggering amount of option trails in the area. It wasn’t uncommon to be riding along and have three separate routes of varying difficulty, all taking you to the same ending point. This plays back into the overall theme of the region, and what Barry and Bob really wanted us to communicate when coming to the region, there really are trails here for people of all comfort levels. We will be the first to admit, when heading to a scenic lunch destination, the term “Outhouse Trail” is not a very appealing name. However, it became painfully obvious where the name came from as we reached our destination. Yes, you guessed it; we came across a bright green outhouse to let us know we reached our lunch spot. A quick left down a tight section of trail, and we arrived atop a rock face overlooking a large hydro cut valley. Although the hydro towers still cross the skyline in front of you, the vast amount of greenery that you overlook from this spot made it worth the break for lunch. At this point, we came across a conveniently placed fire pit, and got to work getting a campfire going to make our roast chicken sandwiches. Its important to note, if you plan on having a trail side cookout in Haliburton Highlands, or any region for that matter, ensure there are no fire bans in effect during your stay. Also, please don’t forget to ensure any fire is fully extinguished before hitting the trails again. After taking some time to enjoy the scenery and our trailside snack, we hit the trail back to Minden once again, the same way we came. On our way through town, we pulled over to the Dominion Hotel & Pub, right along the Gull River to grab dinner. Shortly after, we headed back to the South Wind Motel & Campground to rest and recuperate for our final day of riding.

Day 3 The Rail Trail Beginner Friendly Riding As the sun rose on Day 3, we were excited to head up to the Village of Haliburton and showcase the beginner friendly trails in the area. We decided to take the intermediate trail from South Wind over to the intersection of the Rail Trail before heading North to Haliburton. Unfortunately, although UTVs are legally operable on designated roadways and HATVA trails, the Rail Trail itself is only accessible to ATVs, as it’s a multi-use trail and is shared with walkers, hikers, etc. Luckily, Gelert Rd. can be used as a bypass, so our lonely Yamaha Kodiak proceeded down the rail trial, while our two UTVs ran parallel along the roadway. The Rail Trail is definitely the perfect trail for any beginner rider who has enough experience to safely ride on level

terrain, but doesn’t feel comfortable on uneven or challenging landscapes. The trail is extremely well signed with stop approaching signs, stop signs and even interstate style highway markers every kilometer, indicating your exact distance from Haliburton. At the end of the Rail Trail, our convoy was reunited and we followed County Road 21 to the ORV parking lot at the edge of Haliburton Village. Unlike Minden, you’ll have to park your buggy at the edge of the village and proceed on foot. Luckily, directly across the street from the lot is the Baked & Battered Cottage Bakery & Fish Fry. After polishing off what can only be described as some of the best fish and chips around, we headed back once again down the way we came in the

morning, to load up our truck and trailer and head back to the ATV World HQ in time for dinner. As we loaded up our trailer, one of our riders put it best by saying, “I feel as though we’ve been here for three days of endless riding, but when I look at the map, it’s as if we’ve barely scratched the surface of what this region has to offer.” We spent three days exploring the authentically Canadian landscape offered in the Haliburton Highlands, and there’s one thing we know for sure - we’ll be back! Regardless of the ATV/UTV and skillset you bring to region, there are trails here to match, and a plethora of local businesses that are ready to welcome you with open arms.

SCORE OF THE MONTH Each kit comes complete with 4 chocks and two tie down straps.

To install the chock to the trailer, we found it easiest to load the ATV or UTV on the trailer, and then secure the chock with at least one bolt, so you know it will be aligned perfectly.

TIE ONE on Erickson Tie Downs

There is nothing more important when it comes to off road riding & driving, than safely securing your toys to the trailer. Here at ATV World, we always claim that safety never takes a holiday, and our friends at Erickson Manufacturing heard our call and sent us a set of the all-new ATV Wheel Chock and Tie-Down Strap Kit for this issue’s SCORE of the MONTH. Erickson’s new ATV Wheel Chock and Tie-Down Strap Kit was designed to secure ATVs and UTVs directly to the trailer, u lizing a unique E-Track Wheel Chock and E-Track racket strap. By securing the res to the trailer, it ingeniously allows the suspension to move, so no more worry if you “crushed” the suspension enough when securing your buggy down from points on the frame. The kit will work on res as small as 10”, all the way to 30” in diameter. Each chock comes with 2 E-Track slots, so the size of the re will determine which one will work best.

Move to the front of the tire and repeat with the front chock.

98

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 4

Erickson uses heavy-duty 2” wide straps, which also have the E-Track clips on the end that fit perfectly into the slots on the chock. You permanently install the chock on the trailer, (with your own hardware) and when installed to Erickson specifica ons, this kit will hold vehicles with a weight of up to 1500lbs. Once the kit is installed, you simply drive your buggy over the chock and quickly strap your buggy down. We installed a kit on our trailer, and we have to agree that it is one of the fastest ways to secure your ATV or UTV that we’ve come across for this price point. WHEN ATVLYFE.COM’S STONE DOWLESS BUILDS HIS OWN PURPOSE BUILT, Mud ATV, you know it’s going to be something special. A lifelong ATV enthusiast and perfectionist by nature, Stone has been showcasing amazing ATV and UTV builds on his IG page and website for years now. His passion to promote the companies and people who support him and his ideas is second to none. With more than 107,000 followers his page, it’s is one of the fastest growing ATV/UTV pages in social media.

The starting point for “Stone’s Ultimate Mud Quad” was none other than a Polaris 850 Highlifter Edition. He claims to have needed the best possible starting platform, and that this was undoubtedly it. One might notice that he scrapped a few of the Highlifter Edition upgrades like the high clearance A-Arms, and 29.5” Outlaw 2 tires, but what he did get is a shielded clutch and intake ducting, a rack mounted radiator with inverted dual fans, stiffer springs, and a High & Low, Mud Specific Transmission with lower gearing. These OEM quality

items are worth their weight in gold on a machine that’s going to spend its life in the soup bowl. Stone started this as a mild build, and quickly opted to go full tilt with it. The build and its progress was showcased with updates from start to finish on the ATVLYFE Instagram page. He also claims his followers were genuinely excited about the build, offering help and involvement along the way. The “finished” product was debuted at the Mud Nationals, and Stone was also able to meet many of his longtime followers and sponsors.

THE BIG LIFT KIT IS COMPLETELY BOLT-ON, AND ALSO COMES WITH FOUR OUTLAW RCV AXLES. 102

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 4

HIGH LIFTER BIG 6” LIFT AT THE CORE The heart of the build is based on High Lifter’s 6” Big Lift Kit. As with any lift kit, this is designed to increase ground clearance and make room for larger tires. High Lifters goal with this kit was to prevail over the stereotypes of poor handling and difficult steering. Custom steering components, hub location and geometry provide excellent steering and ma-

neuverability on the trails. The kit provides a true 6” of lift with max clearance arms that push the tires two inches forward for even more tire clearance and wheelbase. The Max Clearance rear arms push it backwards 3” in the same manner. The Big Lift Kit is completely bolt-on, and also comes complete with four Outlaw RCV Axles. These

American made, high performance axles are some of the toughest CV axles made in any market. CV angle is kept to a maximum of 30 deg up front and 34 deg in the rear, to further increase axle life and durability, compared to other lift kits on the market, with greater CV angles and higher failure rates. www.highlifter.com

ROLLING STOCK With a true six inches of lift, the ATVLYFE Sportsman has no problem clearing massive 33” Gorilla Axle MT2 tires. These massive 33x10-15” tires are mounted on No Limit’s 15” 2 piece modular Storm series wheels for a truly killer stance that is always searching for traction. The storm wheel claims a 400% increase on bead retention over any other wheel on the market. The MT2 tire features massive 2” lugs across the entire contact surface. The 3-stage lug design claims aggressive mud traction with a smooth ride. www.gorilla-axle.com www.nolimitwheels.com

FINDING EXTRA HORSEPOWER Stone turned to his friends at HMF for a serious increase in HP, torque, and all around engine performance. The guys at HMF dialed him in with a Titan XL Series slip-on exhaust and a Gen 3.5 optimizer to correct the fuel map. The Titan XL is the louder of the two offerings from HMF, and it raises the sound by 4-6 db over stock. It gives the Sportsman a much healthier note, and increases performance by 3-4 HP throughout the whole curve. Stone knew that additional HP and massive tires will only get you so far without proper clutching. He turned to his clutch-expert friends at 3p Offroad for a custom clutch kit. The guys at 3P Offroad can clutch just about any ATV and UTV for your individual needs, tire size, and HP. www.hmfracing.com www.3poffroad.com

atvworld THE LIFE OF THE PARTY The mudding scene is definitely known for being a party, and what better way to enjoy it than bringing night-club quality tunes and lighting with you? Stone installed an N2Deep Customs 6” Cree LED light bar into the grill for all the driving light you could ever need. For under car and under fender lighting, he installed Gorilla Axle’s Silverback Led Rock lights that even function off the beat of the sound bar. In looking for that extra custom look, Stone wanted to run automotive LED wheel lights. To our knowledge, they hadn’t been used on an ATV to date, and he ended up manufacturing completely custom mounts to make them work. Stone went with the extreme audio guys at Southern Audio Services for the new Bazooka “Party Bar”. The Party

TRAX4 BREAST CANCER 9TH ANNUAL EVENT - MAY 5 & 5, 2018 Registration is open for the 9th Annual TraX4 Breast Cancer taking place spring 2018 in Sequin, Ontario. This 2-day event is full of fun, amazing trails and wonderful people. Participants are treated to an amazing weekend of riding private ATV trails on the Canadian Shield full of fun and challenging terrain with spectacular scenery. Co-Founded by Suzy & Tracey, TraX4 Breast Cancer is an ATV chapter that supports the Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Foundation, which has raised over $5 million dollars over the past 18 years to support those in need! The uniqueness about this foundation is that it is a volunteer based organization that is filling a void in the community for those men and woman battling breast cancer across Canada. Most people do not realize the financial impact that a diagnosis and treatment has on a person as not everything is covered by private or public health care systems. The expenses involved with undergoing a diagnosis and treatment can add up quickly, at a time when those diagnosed may have to stop working for the 6 months or more that

they need to undergo treatment, leaving them with reduced or no income for day to day expenses. Not all costs involved are covered by private or public health care programs. This is where the charity helps to fill the void by relieving some of the financial stress, and giving peace of mind financially and allowing them to focus on what is important... their recovery. The TraX4 Breast Cancer event is a weekend filled with great ATV trails, great memories and meeting a lot of new friends. An event that the WHOLE family can participate in! Many riders participate as they have been personally touched by this disease, others because they know that they can make a difference to someone that is currently going through it; either way this event is one to remember!! The whole weekend is run from our central command station at Grand Tappattoo Resort in Parry Sound, and begins on Friday, May at 11am and a fun trail ride and poker run (if your chose) through out the day. The evening brings Mix and Mingle!

Saturday kicks off with a full buffet breakfast and another day of awesome riding from mud, rocks to water holes! Followed by a fun evening with dinner, awards and a silent auction. Come out and join the fun! To register, learn more about the event or to make a donation, please visit trax4bc.com. DETONATION

DRIVING FREEDOM

T

he trail ahead was littered with rocks embedded in the downtrodden soil. Varying from fist size to bowling ball, the once worn smooth dirt trail had morphed into a plinko board of boulders and stone. Shifting my weight from side to side while cranking the handlebars, I attempted to “choose a line” of least resistance. But much to my dismay, the mid-size ATV resisted, choosing to bounce over the debris instead. Realizing finesse wasn’t the vehicle’s strong suit, I changed tactics. Burping the throttle and shifting my weight rearward, I thought perhaps lifting the front tires would make for easier navigation of the rocky, land-mine pathway. But once again the stubbornness of the ATV won the fight, continuing on its single-minded trajectory. Memories of that first ATV ride have stuck with me for nearly 30-years. I was an avid off-road motorcycle rider (and still very much enjoy my time on twowheels), and I was more than a little excited to sample this new form of off-road adventure. There were countless times during that first ride experience, when I wished to be back on two-wheels, picking the best lines, lifting the front wheel over water holes, and being actively engaged in the riding experience. Instead, for the

most part, I sat there, applying throttle, brake, and to a lesser extent steering as we plodded down the trail. “These things are like moon buggies for this world,” my riding buddy determined after stopping for lunch. I thought about that statement for a minute and he was right. An ATV, be it those early versions or today’s modern examples, are in many ways all-terrain buggies. They are incredibly competent and tough, with the ability to navigate extreme terrain in extreme conditions. However, for all of their terrain attributes, they lack the one component I craved that day and still crave now…rider input. An off-road motorcycle delivers a riding experience unlike any other offroad vehicle. A combination of two-wheel freedom, favorable power-to-weight, and sophisticated long-travel suspension. Piloting a motorcycle down some worn, single-track feels as close to flying as you can get without leaving the ground… where you’re truly driving the vehicle, not simply riding it. Of course, ATVs are no longer the hottest ticket in the off-road world, side-bysides are. No question, the utility attributes of a modern UTV are unmatched by virtually any other off-road vehicle. Their multi-passenger, hauling, and towing

abilities mated with ease of use and comfort are a big reason why they are so popular with so many different users. On the performance side-by-side spectrum, there’s no argument that today’s vehicles are nothing short of amazing. With automotive type controls, big power outputs, and incredible suspensions, they can tame insane terrain at ridiculous speeds. What’s more, the riders are nestled safe and secure inside a full cage and strapped into a comfortable bucket seat. It’s a combination of performance, capability, comfort, confidence, and familiarity that has jettisoned performance side-by-sides to the forefront of the offroad community. Yet, despite this landslide of positive attributes, they continue to lack the one intangible quality of pure off-road freedom that I found missing from my very first ATV ride. Don’t get me wrong, I love both ATVs and side-by-sides of every flavor. During the warm weather months here in Minnesota, you can find me making tracks. Yet, there’s a part of me hoping the “next” generation of off-road vehicles will bring back that two-wheel freedom I crave, and allow tens of thousands of other offroad enthusiasts to taste it for the very first time.

While only concepts, ideas such as these, which blend two-wheel freedom with ATV and side-by-side attributes could inject a greater driving experience into the sport.
