scene it CAMP RZR

The biggest party in the dunes was in Glamis, CA. again this past October. Camp RZR So Cal. has built a reputation as the place to be on Halloween Weekend, especially for Side by Side owners. With attendance from all around the world, Polaris puts on this amazing get together annually, and best of all, it’s completely free to anyone who wants to come enjoy the festivities. This year marked the ten year anniversary of the highly successful RZR, and Polaris decided to give back in the way of giving away 10 Polaris RZR Turbos. The Polaris party starts Friday morning, while many get in and get the pregame started on Thursday. The village is 10-6 Friday and 9-6 on Saturday. The Polaris Experience Tour is on hand with Dymamix Turbo demo rides all day, both days. The kid’s zone is popping with excited children, playing games, trick or treating, and winning prizes. There are also scheduled RZR Reward drawings going on throughout both days. Saturday night is the grand finale, with a giveaway show including live band RZRaoke “Karaoke”, and then Polaris giving away a quarter million dollars’ worth of (10) RZR Turbos. The party closes out with the best Fireworks show we’ve ever seen from a UTV.

The Kid’s Zone RZR Power Wheels course was a good time for all the little tykes.

There were definitely some Badass RZRs on display, but the best part was seeing what looked like a trailer queen, ripping it up in the dunes later that weekend.

HAVING THE RIGHT TOOL (RIDE) FOR THE JOB

W

hen I first met my wife, one of the first comments she made to me was regarding the amount of what she referred to as “toys” that I had. At the time, I had never really thought about it. I was into motorcycles and snowmobiles, and I had a couple of both because they each had a specific purpose. I raced motocross so I needed a motocross bike and rode a street bike back forth to work. As for the snowmobiles, I had one for taking into the bush for ice fishing and one for road

running, (no groomed trail systems back then) when I was out with my buddies. I didn’t really think of it as having an excess of equipment - sort of like having a lawnmower tractor, a lawnmower and a whipper-snipper to completely maintain my lawn. Everything has a purpose and a specific job. Moving forward to 2017, in my stable I have both a 650 Can Am 2-up ATV, and a Honda Side by Side 500 Pioneer. When I bought the Can Am in 2014, I was simply looking to upgrade my ATV, and since 2-ups were now legal for the road and I considered them safer for riding double, it seemed obvious this bike and I were made for each other. The Honda side by side was purchased in 2015, (partially by trading in the ATV that my offspring drove on weekends) primarily so my 5 year-old Granddaughter could safely and legally go riding with us in her car seat. Everything seemed simple enough from a recreational point of view. What I find surprising is that since both purchases, I find myself using each machine more and more for specific and different tasks and chores around the yard than the recreational purposes they were originally purchased for. I have become dependent on having both vehicles to get “the job(s) done.” Aside from providing a nice spot for my dog or son to sit when I have a lot to haul, like wood down at the hunting camp or sugar bush, my Honda Pioneer is essential to getting things done. Now you may think it is simply just the fun of driving it around, but the fact is that it simply helps get the job done quicker. I bought a mesh sided utility box from Kimpex, (I think) and installed it on the back, and I can carry everything from chainsaws and generators to propane tanks wherever I want, without the issues of towing

This loader attachment changes this ATV into a Utility application that all your friends would want to borrow.

a trailer in the bush. Now, with a winch installed on the front, it’s like a mini Hummer. I also find that I can work longer and put more hours into the task at hand, because of sitting in its truck-like cab and the ease of getting in and out. I have also had the opportunity of plowing snow using a friend’s side by side. If I decide to get a snow plow again, I will be getting it for the side by side. Not exactly sure why, but it just seemed to work better than on the ATVs I’ve previously owned. The fact that you can winterize the cab means my “golden years” can now be climate controlled when the cold weather moves in. Where my ATV shines is in areas of close quarters, by being so nimble. This has to do with the type of powertrain it has, so it does very little damage to my lawn as well. I hook up my trailer and I can carry topsoil, gravel or rubbish, (like leaves) wherever it needs to go. It sure beats using the wheelbarrow I pushed around years ago. The front and rear racks also make good work benches when doing repairs on the deck, shed, or even the house. With the wide range of equipment that each manufacturer is producing now, a person could even break it down so you could have a utility and sport version of each type of vehicle; have the best of both worlds as they say. Although that sounds intriguing, I don’t think I would go that route, primarily for the following reasons: surprisingly the cost of the vehicle would not be a deterrent, but the storage of said vehicles, the cost of regular maintenance of each vehicle, and the ever increasing cost of extra insurance would be the deterring factors. It could be my age, or that I am at the point in my life where things that were important before, are not so important any-

46

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 5

more, that I no longer have to have the biggest and baddest piece of equipment on the trail. It could also be that the quality of the equipment that is available is now capable of crossing over the lines from sport and recreation, to utility, in a greater and easier way. I think though, it’s not the quantity of the equipment you have, but utilizing all that your equipment is capable of doing. With the battery of accessories available for most ATVs and SXSs, the sky is the limit when customizing them to your specific needs and preferences. It’s almost like getting two vehicles for the price of one, or in my case, four for the price of two.

This mesh utility box makes it almost too easy to transport equipment like generators and chainsaws.

Then pull it back in under tension, guiding it as you go. We call this pre-treating our ca le and it s a ood idea to do It after eac ti e ou use our winch. There are a few reasons why pre-stretching your cable is important. The cable on your spool should be tight and wrapped in an orderly manner, as this will reduce wear and tear, prolonging the life of the cable. Pre-treating will also strengthen the cable.

2 We all know that sometimes your winch is going to get wet, even if that means going deep in the water and mud, or pressure washing it after a ride. These motors are sealed units, but moisture can still breach them, and when it does, the seals trap any moisture inside. en if ou sta out of t e ater t e otors can still sweat, creating condensation inside the motor. Putting your winch in free-spool and running it until the motor gets warm, is a good habit to start getting into. This will help dry out any moisture or condensation that is getting trapped inside of your motor.

4

3 A very important part of the winch is the electrical components. We have motors, contactors, remotes, and wires. We all know that you need power to run the winch, so maintaining your electrical components is a must. Always make sure that you a e a stron connection. ou can also et roducts such as Corrosion Block that will help protect electrical components.

With any ATV / UTV winch, you will have steel cable or synthetic rope. No matter which option you have, these cables need to be cleaned after use. Dirt, sand, and debris will cause abrasion. DO NOT Grease or Oil the synthetic cable. For steel cable, you will want to use a lubrication protectant similar to Corrosion Block, to properly maintain it.

Following these tips will prolong the life of your winch, giving you a better overall winching experience. GETTING FAMILIAR WITH THE X4 About a month into its known existence, a a a finall called it t e in ite to e erience t e ol erine for oursel es. The press launch ride day was to be in Taylorsville, North Carolina, at the Brushy Mountain Motorsports Park. In fact it s safe to sa t at e would have found ourselves using reverse quite a bit more, even in some of the larger two-seat options. While from a distance it looks pretty similar, upon closer inspection the “all new” Wolverine is truly a completely new mac ine. tartin it t e c assis t e is every bit as compact as the two-seat Wolverine. The base model is only 59.8 inches ide and t e odels easure it t e fender ares. is reasona l narro idt is critical as it eans t e can still hit the 60” trails, and also be transported in the back of a full size pickup truck. The wheelbase is only 1.5” longer and the overall vehicle length is only 5” longer than the two seat Wolverine. This machine is nothing like the rest of the competition t at a e rett uc ust added and a second ro of seats. e is uilt to e a true four seat trail machine. e s ac seats are ind of like a Honda Pioneer, but not reall . Instead of tu lin forward into the bed, the seat ase i s u to t e ac of t e front seats, and then the seat back slides forward up against it. The design is pretty simple, but you do give up a little more storage. You have the option to run 2, 1, or no back seats, depending on your needs. With both seats in the forward position, storage is just slightly smaller than the two seat Wolverine, or maybe close to

a Teryx 4. The bed does not have a dump function like the Honda or Polaris General. nterin t e ca is eas and a a a u raded t e it full doors co ared to the 1/4 doors on the 2 seat Wolverine. The doors seem to be very solid and latch reall ell. t ft I ad no issue ettin in the back seat either. The seats are full size seats that are pretty much identical to the fronts, and just as comfortable. The only thing noticeably restricting was the rear oor oard footin oc ets t e are cheated to one side a little, and just big enough for my size 13 boots. You will also notice and appreciate that the rear seats are elevated 100mm over the fronts for i ro ed ision and field of ie . The reason your feet are cheated in a little is that the new motor sits centered in the chassis, right between the two passengers. the past few years, Polaris has made a tradition of dropping a brand new machine at the Camp RZR Glamis event, and our invite meant we would have one waiting with our name on it. e ac ine s true identit is al a s e t secret until it s un eilin but in the spirit of being a family orientated event, the CAMP RZR release has usually been a performance 4 seat model of some sort. Anticipation was even higher than usual this year, as rumors circled of an even bigger, more powerful, race width machine, looking to outdo t e a eric . ile e all ould lo e to see a fire breathing 72”, race ready monster, the likelihood was more towards a 4 seat ersion of t e ne ur o na i dition. e seat na ic dition ad just hit the streets this August, and was quickly proving to be a fan favorite with anyone who has had a chance to drive one. We were truly infatuated with ours and couldn t ait to share the intelligent suspension performance with a few more passengers at a time.

SO CAL. CAMP RZR

The event was a hit as it always is. When they mentioned bringing a trailer to rin o e a unit t e didn t a e to tell us twice! We showed up Thursday night at a out ile eo le ere still filin into the camping areas like ants, and the overall scene was still going off the hook. We skipped the motorhome as we had a very important Youth Football Game on Saturday, and would only be able to stay for two nights. Jimmy from Bikeman Performance was gracious enough to let us air ed it on t e oor of is race e i. e rig and their camp was in vendors, right ne t to t e e ent. It also as far and away the best functioning air conditioner e e e er e erienced. ile e er od else was sweating, we had to pry the half frozen sheets off of us to get up and dispose of a few beers.

Speaking of Jimmy and his crew from Bikeman Performance, they truly take customer service to the next level with this event. They drive the entire race rig out from Wisconsin, and spend the entire three days answering customer questions, tuning customer cars, installing new exhaust systems, and BBQing for everybody in the vicinity. They literally have to take turns sneaking out of camp to get in a little Duning, or escape over to the Hill to crush a fe of t e s t at t in t e re fast. Polaris introduced us to our new rides early Friday morning, and just as expected, it was a four seat version of the ne P ur o na i . ile not entirel surprised, we were still overly excited to add such a machine to the stable. The Dynamix would also prove to be one of, if not t e est la is une e icle e d ever experienced.

THE NEW DYNAMIX 4 The new Dynamix 4 is a four seat replica of the two seater, with the exact same features like Ride Command and Dynamix Suspension. The two seat version was our new favorite UTV, and the four seater is quickly proving to be just as good, with roo for t o ore. If case ou issed our re ie or ou e een li in under a roc for the past few months, we can catch you u on ust at is a na i ersion P Turbo. The Dynamix is by far the most premium RZR offering at this time, featuring all the super cool features of Ride Command combined with a new intelligent suspension system that can make c an es on t e to t e rate of . of a second. This breakthrough performance is ard to fat o ut e can assure ou it s here. The Dynamix comes equipped with i end internal ass i ac shocks with electronic modules instead of clicker knobs on the bottles. The Dynamix suspension system is a very hi-tech, joint project between Polaris and Fox Shox. Loosely based on a high end automotive technology, the Dynamix uses Bluetooth to instantly adjust between preset compression settin s. e first irst Dynamix suspension feature you will notice is the dash mounted toggle switch that reads Comfort, Sport, and Firm. This switch allows the driver to instantly toggle between the three settings. The Comfort is basically for slow speed cruising and en o ent. It s co ara le to having your compression clickers all the way soft. The Comfort setting provides an extremely plush ride, but will also transmit a lot of body roll and minimal bottoming resistance. The Firm setting on the other hand is similar to all the way maxxed on the compression clickers. 66

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 5

Bodyroll is a thing of the past, bottoming resistance is unreal, and the car actually hikes up about an inch and a half in the stroke offering a substantial ground clearance increase. This additional ground clearance is especially helpful in low speed rock crawling situations. While the ir settin definitel as its lace it ill chatter your teeth loose over washboard, and just plain wear on you in choppy, rough terrain. Sport setting is a completely different animal in itself. Complete visibility of all three suspension modes is available on its own screen, within the 7” touchscreen Ride Command display unit. On comfort, it will indicate all four corners at full soft, Firm will indicate all four corners at full compression. The Sport setting is a pre-built setting that is completely driver intuitive, starting at about a three, but constantly shifting or changing. The Dynamix uses seven different in ut sensors to read at s oin on and instantly adjust all four corners to the best possible suspension settings/situ-

WHILE WE REALLY ENJOYED WATCHING HOW THE SUSPENSION WAS WORKING BENEATH US, THE RIDE COMMAND UNIT HAS AN EVEN COOLER SCREEN TO MONITOR.

ation. For example, when you turn left, steering sensors will tell the outbound “right side” shocks to go full stiff, virtually eliminating body roll, keeping your car at t rou t e corners and allo in for a higher rate of speed. Another example is stiffening up the front shocks under braking to minimize front end dive. Should you have a g-out or a ditch sneaks up on you, the system will also go full compression up front as you brake, and then keep full compression for an extra 1.5 seconds after you let off. With a little practice, we found ourselves driving to this feature. When a g-out sneaks up on you, get hard on the brake to scrub a little speed, the front end goes full stiff, and then you can get back on the gas to carry the front end light through the obstacle. Overall, we really like the Sport setting in the dunes;

it provides a predictable, yet plush ride, and it s ands do n etter t an an t in you can accomplish with the clickers on any other stock shocks. Polaris and Fox have done their homework with the presets and with the ability to adapt on the t is is far t e est andlin dune machine you can buy at a dealership. The suspension action screen is really cool to monitor, watching how it works to provide an ideal set-up under all conditions.

While we really enjoyed watching how the suspension was working beneath us, the Ride Command unit has an even cooler screen to monitor. The Ride o and s P s ste is a eso e in the dunes. With the GPS “bread crumb” tracking, you can map and save that extremely fun line to China Wall, or even just waypoint any other destination you might ant find a ain. e rou ide feature works especially well in Glamis, as they

We found an iPad with a life proof case and dash mount to work really well, but even just having it on your phone will keep you visible in the group. Location functionality is based on cell signal, and will show you at the last spot you had signal, and then re-pick up again when a connection is reestablished. The GPS can run permanently in the background, but you will want to run your phone or iPad connected to a power source as it eats a battery pretty quick. PUTTING IT TO THE TEST IN BAJA Speaking of putting real-deal mileage on the new rig, we decided to use our Dynamix 4 loaner to pre-run the Baja 1000. We only had a little over a week from Camp RZR until leaving for e ico to re run t e sout ern alf. ason u ur and I ould be rerunning the southern half of the course, and a 4 seat Turbo seemed like the perfect vehicle for the nearly 600 miles of recon. We decided to rob the cage and a fe ot er arts fro last ear s P uild to el get the Dynamix ready for the task at hand. We started by installing a bolton a e ca e it roof. e one piece design takes a little prying and minor swearing to get the bolts lined up, but all in all, the install is very straightforward. e a e ca es are ade from CNC bent and precision notc ed tu in . a e sells t eir ca es I elded and powder coated, or you can get a knock down cage kit with pre-bent and notched material that you weld yourself. The cage still uses stock doors, but gets rid of the stock seat belt mounting points. We went with Pro Armor G2 suspension seats and Pro Armor 5 point harnesses. The t ical oint arness doesn t or ell it t e stoc seats and the suspension seats are a million times more comfortable anyway. We also installed a Parker Pumper clean air system for our helmets. We opted for a clean, temporary mount that uses hose clamps instead of having to weld tabs onto our already powder coated cage. The mounting is solid, installs in minutes, and is worth its weight in gold along the trail. e installed t e Polaris P I o lin ostl for its intercom feature. The standalone unit actually combines intercom features with a 5 channel, two-way radio. We needed the intercom to talk between driver and passenger, and the radio would provide a little additional safety as we could reach our chase truc en reasona l close to it. e s interco or s li e a full functioning race intercom, but the built-in radio is a lower wattage unit that is more designed to talk between other UTVs in your immediate ride group. imensionally speaking, the 50-inch wide category is where the roots of the s ort ere first lanted. But consumer demand for more power and greater stability pushed the dimensions of future vehicles to get longer and wider. Today, some sport sideby-side machines rival the dimensions of a compact pickup, perfectly suited for high-speed and wide-open spaces such as dunes or desert running. But tight trails, and especially those rated for 50inch or narrower, make up a vast majority of designated routes in North America. This fact, coupled to the desire of future side-by-side buyers wanting a machine well equipped for exploring the unknown with others, makes the trail category vitally important to the future growth of the sport side-by-side segment. 76

In an a s t e success of t e an a s i a eric is a i reason why we are so smitten with the new Maverick Trail. Much of the DNA of t e as een orro ed t e little Mav, including styling, cockpit, chassis, and suspension theory; all of which have been “shrunk” to trail size dimensions. Overlook the “me-too” appearance of the Trail, which clearly borrows design traits fro t e and ou ll find t e longest trail vehicle in the category. The stretched wheelbase is more than 5-inches longer than the previous wheelbase leader, the Wildcat Trail. At 90.6-inches, the Mav Trail is more than 10-inches longer than the RZR, and joining this stretched chassis design is a near perfect weight bias from front to rear, making the Mav Trail feel incredibly balanced and stable.

THE SECURITY AND COMFORT OF THE SEATING POSITION LENT ITSELF TO THE OVERALL DRIVING EXPERIENCE

Our first taste of the Maverick Trail took place in far northern Utah, just south of the Wyoming border in late fall. A mixture of narrow wooded trails combined with open running twotrack provided the perfect opportunity to experience the adventurous nature of the vehicle.

Vehicle stability is perhaps what stands above all other attributes of the Maverick Trail. The stretched chassis combined with a double A-arm suspension up front with 10-inches of travel, and another 10-plus-inches of suspension stroke out ac t rou an s orsional Trailing A-Arm design, gives the Mav Trail a full-size feel with narrow stance agility. The tight and rock-strewn trails of northern ta ere e first sa led t e little Mav, proved to be ideal in allowing the vehicle to demonstrate this coveted blend of traits. With a mixture of max 50-wide trails, two-track mountain roads, and fullt rottle alle oor aunts t e a rail felt perfectly at home in every situation. While most long-wheelbase vehicles often feel slow to react, the Mav Trail refused to exhibit this negative handling trait. A balanced chassis and ultra-low center-of-gravity is one way the vehicle overcomes this nag. The other is quick to react steering geometry and a highlyresponsive power-train that puts power to the ground with intuitive results. Pitch the Mav into an off-camber turn, and what could easily result in a handling push, becomes a broad smile, apex exit drift, all with the simple tug of the steering wheel and feather of the throttle.

Power options come in two sizes, an 800cc version producing 51-horsepower, and a throaty punch from a 1000-cube V-twin producing 75-horsepower, putting it atop the power rankings, along with the Polaris RZR 900, albeit with a more advantageous power-to-weight ratio. Both engines sit low in the chassis and feature standard engine braking. The engine is ated to an s uic es onse System CVT, feeding toque to a transmission featuring traditional high/low forward momentum and an in-line reverse to ar confi uration. A focus for Can-Am engineers when developing the Mav Trail was to ensure it was equipped for adventure. This means less maintenance for the owner, an enhanced driver experience, and rugged dependability. All three of these attributes are engineered into the power-pack, with features such as an oversized radiator for i ro ed coolin i o air inta e it high mount intakes, and a Donaldson air box ensuring a clean-air intake charge; electronic belt protection; and specially cut and constructed transmission and differential gears for toughness and quiet operation.

With trail adventure integrated into the DNA of the Maverick Trail, the vehicle’s width and nimbleness make it perfectly suited for sub-50inch width trails.

Another key area the little brother to t e orro ed fro its ret ren is t e r o oc coc it desi n. ile it a sound like a fancy marketing name, and it is, the concept is really simple, and more importantly, it feels right. With a stretched wheelbase and longer overall chassis, the Mav Trail gave Can-Am engineers and designers more space for the all-important driver and passenger accommodations. i ilar to t e ou sit lo in t e chassis with greater leg room and more space for adjustability of the seat and steerin eel to find t at a s ot for your frame. Not only is the cockpit roomy for a trail width vehicle, it also makes you feel secure. No awkward leg or arm angles

struck us during our two days of riding, e en it our fra e. e securit and comfort of the seating position lent itself to the overall driving experience, giving us a feeling of greater control and confidence en tac lin un no n terrain at above average speeds. Still, there is a trade-off happening here. The snug security the cab offers also hampers the ability to “shift” driving positions, something that can become critical with long distance excursions. But this gripe aside, the Mav Trail served up the est out of t e o seatin confi uration e e sa led in a trail si ed e icle. e suspect it will only get better when treated to accessories and customization from both Can-Am and the aftermarket.

Can-Am’s unique Torsional Trailing A-Arm Terrain (TTA-T) suspension allows for a suspension design that can be packaged tightly, yet deliver more than 10-inches of travel. Shared resources are evident here as well, highlighted by an integrated receiver hitch and standard rear sway bar mounting design. 78

After sampling all the major players in the Trail category, we’d give the nod to the new Can-Am Maverick as our trail-width vehicle of choice.

More than just a trail machine, the Maverick Trail offers just enough utility capabilities to get the job done. The rear box, shown here with an accessory tailgate rack, can handle up to 300-pounds, (136 kg) and features Can-Am’s LinQ quick attach accessory system as well as 4 integrated anchor hooks.

With a wheelbase stretched to just beyond 90-inches, the Maverick Trail is incredibly stable and comfortable. The longer chassis design also enhances overall vehicle control with predictable steering inputs and cornering exit slides.

The Ergo-Lok cockpit surrounds you with comfort and confidence. Well thought out, all of the controls seem to fall into place where you’d expect, allowing you to focus more on driving. The well-proportioned steering wheel also serves up 25-degrees of tilt adjustment.

The premium DPS models tout LED accent strips above dual 55-watt reflector headlamps. You’ll find LED tail lamps as well on both trim levels.

A center console is ready for accessory switches and comes well-equipped in premium DPS trim with 2WD/4WD actuation, locking rear differential, and two-position power delivery options.

Trail riding and exploration is a prime customer target for any trail class buggy, and the crew at Can-Am took the extra steps necessary to ensure the new Mav Trail is ready with a host of from-the-factory integrated accessories. Seats can make the cockpit, and while most factory units are lacking, we were impressed with this pair which Can-Am is calling Ergoprint. Cooling A common issue we deal with navigating the tighter, technical trail systems found in our backyard is always cooling. Although the ambient temperature here is usually cooler than Southern states, the problem arises from the lack of speed and thus airo ein ulled t rou radiator. A HALF CENTURY FOR ARGO 2017

marked the 50th anniversary for the legendary amphibious vehicle - ARGO. From small beginnings, ARGO was born out of an opportunity from parent company Ontario Drive & Gear Limited (ODG), which was a Kitchener, Ontario, based manufacturer of transmissions and gears. Back in the mid-1960s, ODG was contracted to produce transmissions for another amphibious manufacturer in the area. Tough times hit that manufacturer, and as they went out of business, they left ODG holding the order for a number of amphibious vehicle transmissions. From lemons comes lemonade; ODG seized the opportunity and instead of scraping those transmissions, they put a team together, put the nose to the grindstone, and in 1967 the ARGO was born. The original ARGO featured a twostroke 400cc motor from Kohler, with a full sealed fi er lass od and BF Goodrich Fat Cat tires. The idea behind the ARGO was to create a fully amphibious vehicle that could traverse the harsh Canadian back country, and e a le to ta e unters fis er en and explorers to places that were unnavigable before. Throughout the 50 years of existence, the ARGO has seen serious innovations and improvements.

In rou t in ne President, Brad Darling, who has deep ties in the powersports industry and a istor it t e rand. rad s father worked for ARGO during the early inception of the brand in the early s. nder rad s direction has focused on expanding the dealer network and fast-tracking new product developments including a new line of ATVs introduced this year. We were able to convince President Brad Darling to take his foot off the throttle for just a few minutes, to gain a little more 411 on the company that is known as ARGO… Is there a story behind the name ARGO (Is it an acronym)? One of many stories in Greek mythology is the tale of Jason and the Argonauts, the prince who sailed off in a s i na ed r o to find t e Golden Fleece and claim his throne. Just like the ship that took Jason to his destination against incredible odds, toda s ill ta e t e odern adventure seeker through swamps, across lakes and over snow and ice. We have maintained this tradition to name our products according to Greek t olo . a les li e t e entaur s i rot er aurus a eel ATV, and most recently Artemis, a robotic concept rover for exploring the Moon and Mars.

What is something that the average person may not know about ARGO? That we, for 50 years, have been manufacturing ARGO ATVs right here in Canada. How do you test ARGOs? testin starts earl durin t e desi n rocess. er desi n starts it inite le ent nal sis computer software. The components are created and tested in a controlled, high impact / high cyclical until failure. our proprietary testing methods, we create a duty cycle for the vehicle to be tested. The duty cycle removes events that have little impact on reliability or durability and focuses on the intense operating modes - condensed into repeatable and measurable events. This allows ARGO to test in a very short time, the events that will take place over the course of the life time an ARGO. Where is your favorite place to ride? DETONATION

JUST ANOTHER RIDING SEASON

Once the driveway is cleared, the General will be ready to hit the trails this winter.

W

ith just weeks to go before the jolly fat guy in the red suit makes a trip around the globe and hopefully down ours and c i ne I can onestl sa I ore u ed for t e ridin season t an I e e er een. o t icall t is ei tened sense of ent usias fueled an iet doesn t strike until the first signs of a prolonged spring thaw come knocking in mid-March. But the off-road landscape is changing, and more and more riders are discovering all four-seasons of off-road riding. Of course, for those of you living in the southern portions of the United States, winter riding means you switch from a tee-shirt to a hoodie, but for the rest of us, riding during the heart of winter has more often than not, equated to not riding at all. Obviously, some enthusiasts have long relied on their ATV or side-by-side for utility type chores during the winter months. For example, I lo e to lo dri e a it side side. It s not onl faster t an a sno lo er ut it s a ec of lot ore fun. en t ere s t e fis in and untin side of t in s off road e icles have long been a favorite tool in my area for fall hunt preparation, ca in dut or earl ard ater fis in . at s c an ed ell for starters it sno not co in it t e sa e fre uenc or ferocit e e een accusto ed to ore and more enthusiasts have resisted the urge to store their ATV or side-by-side. The shoulder seasons have extended, and after riding with snow on the ground, some have discovered just how enjoyable winter riding can be.

110

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 5

The vehicles themselves have also become more adept at keeping riders protected and warm during the winter months, especially side-by-sides. Case in point, Can-Am recently sent us their latest trail buggy, the Maverick Trail, and with it came a host of accessories desi ned s ecificall for cold eat er runnin . Aside from the atypical windshield, roof, and cab enclosure, other niceties included in the care box were heated seats, heated steering wheel, and even a heated passenger grip bar. All of which was installed with plug and play simplicity. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, clubs and trail associations across North America are embracing off-road e icles as ia le inter recreation e icles. It asn t too lon ago when snowmobile clubs viewed ATVs and side-by-sides as disruptive, trail destroying machines. But over time, attitudes have changed, and along with a mixture of designated trails and multi-use trails coming on line, winter use has grown too. Places like Quebec are well ahead of the curve in this arena. Here multi-use, split trails, and ATV/UTV only trails are common place. And just like snowmobiles, off-road vehicles are not just tolerated in communities, they are welcomed, along with the money enthusiasts bring into the area for fuel, food, and lodging. This kind of acceptance is happening outside of Quebec too. fe issues ac I rote a out o it as eco in ore and more common in my home state of Minnesota to see offroad e icles fillin o ular destination ars restaurants and lodges. While many of these same establishments still rely on snowmobiles during the winter months, off-road vehicles are slowly beginning to show up in the parking lots. Quite likely it is only a matter of time before more and more quads and side-bysides are lined up across the snow packed parking lot during the dead of winter. or t ese reasons and ecause I si l lo e to ride off road hibernation is fast becoming a distant memory. Winter is here, and it s ti e to ride.

Want to make your first winter ride a ‘can’t miss’ success… grill up some over the top, mega thick steaks to warm the body and off-road soul. Chances are everyone in your group will be back for the next winter ride.
