05 POLARIS FACTORY RACING CONTINUES 2018 SUCCESS WITH SECOND CONSECUTIVE PODIUM SWEEP AT ICONIC KING OF THE HAMMERS MITCH GUTHRIE JR. PICKS UP FIRST CAREER KING OF THE HAMMERS WIN, DEFEATING HIS FATHER AND SIX-TIME EVENT CHAMPION Polaris Factory Racing continued its electric start to the 2018 season with a podium sweep at the Can-Am King of the Hammers UTV Race, the world’s toughest oneday off-road race. Following Ronnie Anderson’s win last week at WORCS season opener in the all-new RZR® RS1, Mitch Guthrie Jr.’s victory kept the Polaris Factory Racing team atop the podium. Guthrie Jr. was joined by fellow Polaris teammate Branden Sims in second and his father, Mitch Guthrie Sr., taking third. With multiple victories already secured early in this season, the Polaris team is primed to build upon its incredibly successful 2017 season. From an early age, Mitch Guthrie Jr. has pursued his father’s pedigree of racing success and excellence – as Mitch Guthrie Sr. is a six-time King of the Hammers UTV champion and UTV racing legend. Despite having won multiple marquee races in his young career, including the Mint 400, UTV World Championships and Baja 1000, the coveted King of the Hammers title has eluded Guthrie Jr. until now. With his incredible victory at this year’s King of the Hammers event, it appears that a changing of the guard is in order from father to son.

Back Door took it’s fair share of victims, both experienced and not. CJ Greaves made the pass through the right line while Sims was still hung up on this boulder.

Sims was the first to try this left line and it backfired drastically. Chocolate Thunder had plenty of spectators, especially for a Wednesday morning.

Mitch Guthrie Jr. put in the homework, and was making it look easy on Raceday. 28

WHO SAYS YOU CAN’T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS? As a professional Technician and a Professor teaching in the trades, I came to the conclusion many years ago that you will never know everything in your profession, and therefore, you need to stay active in upgrading your knowledge. This can’t be truer than it is when teaching in the Motive Power Profession. When teaching apprentices, who are exposed to the latest and greatest technology at

work every day, it is really hard to stay ahead of the curve, and have the knowledge to be effective as a teacher. Fortunately, I have a good friend that owns a recreational equipment dealership, and when I asked him if I could work part-time for him to help re-hone my skills, he accepted my resume and put me to work. I am enjoying the “mechanical repair” aspect of the job, but I am finding that the floor seems to be further away than it was in my younger days, all of my calluses on my hands are gone, and I have sore muscles that I forgot even existed. Bottom line, I am now aware of how out of shape I am. I never thought about it before, but it is quite enjoyable moving from the role of teacher, and becoming the student again. After all, I am still a gear head, and I still really enjoy getting my hands dirty, especially on ATVs, side by sides, snowmobiles, motorcycles and personal watercraft. I also have the benefit of working with a great group of people, and we really work well together. If you need a hand, someone is always there to lend one, and although I am sure that they sometimes must chuckle to themselves, they take the time to answer any question I have, no matter how rudimentary it is. After a couple of months though, I wanted to know where I stood as a competent “wrench”. (Technician) One way I used to gauge my progress was to compare my actual repair times to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) factory allotted times. In some circles, it’s referred to as the “flat rate” time allowed to perform a task and/ or repair. This gives most technicians, myself included, a

You can see that when you open the shipping crate, allot of “good stuff” can be hiding in there. Manufacturers carefully design how to really fill these transportation vessel to safely get the everything to its destination.

ballpark idea as to where they stand. I say ballpark because the way these times are developed, especially OEM warranty times, are in my opinion, not always fair to the technician or to the dealership. The manufacturer usually will reference that the times are based on the ability of an “average skilled technician”. Now, I’m not sure exactly how you qualify someone as an average technician. I would also like to know how many times the technician did the specific repair on the same specific vehicle before the length of time was adopted as the “standard”. Also, was the environment ideal for the repairs? Basically, were all the special tools required available, was all lifting and supporting equipment there, and no interruptions by colleagues, salespersons or the boss. My point here, is that when developing these times, the environment is geared to the final outcome and completion for the task at hand, and at the end of the day, can someone sustain this pace of work for 8 to 9 hours? So….after my bit of a rant, I figure I am at about 70% of a seasoned “above average” technician, currently working in the industry. The OEM however, has also made some things easier and more streamlined to help with the ease of installation of accessories. Examples of this would be marking snowmobile tracks to increase the accuracy and efficiency of studding, and marking the frame with very light dimples where bolts holes need to be drilled for accessory mounting and installation. One of the other big changes I found was the differences between the different models. Back when my dad had a Snow Jet and Kawasaki dealership, although we had different models, the foundations or platforms of the machines were somewhat common. Now there are more units with specific platforms for specific needs or purposes. This would include differences in sport, work, and two-up configurations to name a few. From suspension on the skis, the type of track it is using, high tech 2 or 4 stroke engine design, and the operator and passenger creature comforts of touring machines. The technician is expected to know it all thoroughly. The way vehicles are shipped from the factory is now quite unique and very compact. Recreational vehicles now can be very large in size, and it is amazing how big of a vehicle can come out of a much smaller box. Back when I worked for my dad, on a snowmobile or motorcycle (no ATVs at this time yet) there was not as much to install. The front tire and handle bars on MX and enduro motorcycles, (some larger street bikes maybe had some fenders, windshields, batteries and signal lights to install) while snowmobiles, depending on the options such as electric start, in many cases only had the windshield to install. To finish it off, as with everything, there are the electronic devices and controls. At one time, to change from miles to

50

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 6

kilometers, the speedometer cable was moved from one place to another on the speedometer. Most electric accessories were hard wire and switches. The throttle was adjusted by a cable, and carburetors were synchronized. Now, a laptop configures and calibrates everything accurately in a few short minutes, whereas before, mechanical adjustments had to be made. Throttle levers are now connected to the engine by wires instead of sliding cables on some engines. Two ideas I really like are the “learning keys” that de-rate the engine for learners, and the multi-switches for eco-mode, standard mode and my favorite, sport mode. With the simple movement of a switch, you can change the personality of the vehicle. Fortunately, the electronics/programming area is one place that I haven’t gotten too rusty in. This old dog doesn’t have to roll over and play dead just yet.

Manufacturers now are programming “smart keys and fobs” for recreational vehicles. Above the green fob will drastically limit the performance of the vehicle it is activating for operators with limited experience while the gray fob allows regular operation. The vehicle ECM (computer) immediately recognizes not only that this is the owners key for security reasons, but whether or not the operator needs some safety related protocols. The DESS System is also found on BRP products as well.

Post Winter Battery Maintenance

When it’s time to pull out that UTV or ATV after its winter break, You should be using a trickle charging battery charger or ou are oin to need to address t e fuel s ste . r are ou tender for extended vehicle storage. A Battery Tender installs tart rite a es a er efficient ultifunctional fuel additi e called in minutes with a simple easy access pigtail to plug in, and StarTron that can stabilize fuel for up to two years. While most costs much less than a new battery come springtime. If effective when introduced to the system before winter storage, it you’re not trickle charging, you’re going to need to address has also proven to revive reasonably aged fuel, and even help the battery before starting your machine. Start by cleaning to clean carburetors and fuel injectors. It can also be used year any corrosion from the connections. If the battery is not round to i ro e co ustion fuel efficienc and erfor ance. sealed or “maintenance free”, you can also add distilled water to any of the cells that are low. Never quick charge or boost charge your small powersports batteries.

Winter months in the garage can drastically affect tire pressure, even if they don’t typically leak. It is a good idea to check tire pressure every time you ride or drive, but it’s critical after any type of extended storage. A low tire can be dangerous at higher speeds, and it is more prone to punctures, but proper tire pressure will actually increase handling and performance. 52

Allen Knowles from CT Racing turned us on to this really cool switch console from Lazer Star. A single mount with touch buttons that light when activated, instead of cutting multiple holes for multiple toggle switches. Will work on any UTV.

We can’t count how many times we’ve needed just another couple inches to get our UTVs into a narrow trailer, or even a pickup bed. If you use a jack to lift your car to full suspension droop, the tires will be 3-4 inches narrower than they are at stock ride height. With the car lifted on the jack, use a HD ratchet strap to essentially tie the A arms together. This works in the rear with trailing arms or A arms as well, you just have to carefully place the tie down hooks.

INSTALLING THE KRAFTWERKS SUPERCHARGER KIT ON A RZR XP 1000

P

olaris has created an entire “Xtreme Performance” UTV industry with the legendary RZR XP 1000. Its initial release coupled amazing handling with a 107 HP, naturally aspirated motor, and they sold them in record numbers. In 2015, the XP received a few small updates and slight valve train improvements, bringing the power to a class leading 110 HP. The XP continued to sell like crazy until Polaris completely rewrote the rulebook with the factory supercharged RZR XP Turbo putting down 144 HP in 2016, and then even turning that up to 168 HP the following model year. In not so many words, Polaris dropped a class leading, top selling UTV, and then has them making over 60% more HP in just three years’ time. An XP Turbo putting down an extra 60 HP within virtually the same RZR chassis is pretty dang awesome, that is unless you’re one of the tens of thousands of Polaris customers that already bought an XP 1000 before the Turbo’s release. Many loyal Polaris RZR customers traded in their machines in favor of the new turbocharged options, but many are still driving their XP 1000s. If you’re attached to your very own personal XP 1000, but want the power to run with the latest and greatest turbocharged UTV’s, KraftWerks has the answer. Leaders in the muscle car

56

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 6

and Harley Davidson Supercharger scene, they have developed a turnkey, bolt-on RZR XP kit that reliably makes over 150 HP and 110 lb-ft of torque. The 150 HP KraftWerks kit with the 7.5 PSI pulley is proving to be reliable enough for Off-Road racing, and they have a 9 PSI pulley available for 170 HP, and even a 15 PSI drag pulley, capable of a lot more with bigger clutches and injectors. We just installed the 150 HP, 7.5 PSI kit on our 2014 RZR, with unbelievable performance gains. With zero turbo lag, and turbo equivalent power, it truly runs as well as, or better than any of the newer turbo UTVs. The KraftWerks kit is a well thought out, complete bolt on kit, and just requires re-clutching your stock clutch with new weights and springs. You will also need an ECU as tuner and t e reco ended t e no et P tuner as they have developed many different custom personalized tunes for the KraftWerks kit. This how-to won’t show you every single step, as the install is pretty in-depth, but it should showcase how it is truly something that the average, mechanically inclined UTV enthusiast, or backyard mechanic is capable of installing it. Installation requires basic hand tools, and should take you somewhere between 5-8 hours.

2 With the stator cover removed, use a razor blade to clean off any old gasket that is left stuck to the engine case. Once it’s clean, use an impact gun and a 19mm to remove the stock crankshaft bolt.

4 Use a 3/16” drill bit, mark it off with masking tape or a paint pen 31 mm from the tip. This will be a depth gauge when drilling.

6 De-bur the holes you have drilled, and then install the locator pins with a dab of silicone to hold them in place.

Starting with a clean machine, disconnect battery and then jack the rear of the car up until the wheels are hanging, and put it on jack stands. Remove the rear passenger wheel and the lower shock bolt, and use a tie down to pull it back out of the way. Use aluminum foil to create a drip catch for the motor oil, and then remove the stock stator cover. You can also remove the stock intake manifold and piping and the clutch cover with vent tube. You will also cut out and remove a 6”x6” piece of the stock heat shield.

3 Attach the Crank Pin Drill assembly template with a crescent wrench. Ensure that it’s snug, but not overnight.

5 Carefully drill the crank through the holes on the threaded on template, or pin locator drill jig. Only drill 4 mm into the crank, and be careful not to go to deep.

7 Remove the stock stator from the stock stator cover and install into the Main Supercharger drive assembly with the Rotrex head unit. Be sure to install the gem wire harness bracket and rubber bushing, along with the stator into the new housing. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 6

Install Note: We left out a few hoses and other pieces but the instruction sheet lays everything out with great photos and very good detail. You will have to prime the Rotrex Oil Reservoir system with Rotrex SX 150 Traction fluid and re-flash the ECU with a Dynojet PCX for proper tuning. Clutching is also required but KraftWerks can set you up with a really close starting point depending on your overall set-up.

THE WILDCAT XX’s RG SUSPENSION The WILDCAT XX features a little over 18 inches of front and rear wheel travel. While this is on par, or a little less than the rest of the current competition, it’s not always just about numbers in the suspension game. Robby made a point of mentioning that all suspension travel is created equally, and that how you get it plays just as big a part in how well it or s. on first e a ination t e e differences you will notice are that the front steering rack is located in front of the axle, and the absence of the rear radius rods, commonly associated with long travel UTV suspension systems. The Wildcat XX features a completely unique suspension system, utilizing unequal length front A-arms and an Off-Road racing or “Trophy Truck” inspired rear trailing arm. Robby Gordon has been developing and proving this suspension design in his SST race Series for the past two years. The unique suspension combination reduces track width change by up to 40% in the rear and 80% in the front, in comparison to the competition. This true tracking design creates previously unmatched stability and control. The XX’s rear trailing arm allows for the tires to travel virtually straight up and down through the entire suspension travel. This creates less sideto-side movement than the conventional radius rod set up, in which the tires track drastically in and out during the suspensions travel. This design requires a lot more inner CV axle plunge, as the wheel is not moving further away as the

suspension compresses. The Wildcat XX uses a unique double plunging CV axle set up to make this work seamlessly. The unequal length front A-Arms adjust the tires’ camber throughout the suspension travel, to ensure maximum tire contact with the ground at all times. This further enhances steering and control, as does the steering rack being mounted in front of the axle for increased leverage. The shocks are angled for the ideal motion ratio, and the fronts are actually mounted to the lower A-Arm for a lower center of gravity, The Wildcat XX comes equipped with FOX 2.5 Podium QS3 Shocks with Bottom-Out Control in the rear for increased comfort. The QS3 technolo offers si licit at its finest it three drastically different compression settings, depending on what type of terrain and driving you will be throwing at it. The RG designed Wildcat XX features 13.5” of ground clearance, just like the RZR XP platform.

THE WILDCAT XX IS ONE OF THE FIRST UTV’S TO FEATURE ALL DOUBLE SHEAR SUSPENSION AND STEERING COMPONENTS.

THE STEERING AND SUSPENSION SYSTEM ALSO INCLUDES A T-PIN STYLE FORGED ALUMINUM FRONT KNUCKLE AND LARGE WHEEL BEARINGS.

RACE READY DURABILITY & SERVICEABILITY Textron and Robby both claim that durability and serviceability were at the forefront of the design for this vehicle. The Wildcat is one of t e first s to feature all double shear suspension and steering components. This means that they are all supported by tabs on both sides, with the bolt passing through two supporting members for increased durability. This is a pretty big deal in the off road racing world, as we’ve recently seen complete failure or breakage with under-built examples from the competition. The steering and suspension system also includes a T-Pin style, forged aluminum front knuckle and large wheel bearings. The Hanging Rear

Drivetrain prevents underside damage from impacting the powertrain mounting points. Access to key vehicle systems was also a major factor in the Wildcat XX’s design. The entire rear engine and transaxle is housed in a subframe that can be removed with 6 bolts, after removing the skid plate and disconnectin t e uid and electrical connections. The front gear case is also mounted to an easily removable front steel clip/skid. The whole front clip can actually be replaced if damaged, instead of replacing the entire frame, like with other UTVs. This alone could save thousands when considering the cost and labor difference of a frame replacement.

BIG TRIPLE POWER WITH THE EASE OF A CVT Robby and Arctic Cat/Textron had been testing this suspension platform through race team development, but it had been mated to the lower performance, original Wildcat engine. Textron opted for the incredible performance of Yamaha’s high revving 3 cylinder EFI snowmobile engine. This motor has already proven itself incredibly reliable, and it’s known to make big NA power, and even bigger power with a Turbo or Supercharger. Yamaha has been using this stellar engine in its YXZ1000R, but Textron planned to change things up a bit by mating it to a TEAM Industries Rapid Response CVT clutch. The motor is known for making huge power; it comes on higher in the RPMs, and then pulls

to the moon. While impressive, the curve is a little narrow and challenging to utilize when mated to a fully manual transmission. Hooked to a CVT system that can easily keep it in the meat of the power band, will bring a whole new experience. The CVT sends power to an all-new, front and rear TEAM transaxle and front ear case t at as een desi ned s ecifically for the Wildcat XX. You can toggle between 2wd/4wd and 4wd lock functionalit for reater e i ilit in different terrains and for superior rock crawling ability. The 4wd diff-lock option ensures equal power to all four wheels at all times. A true locking diff like this is the only way to go for maximum traction when rock crawling or descending sharp grades.

The trick dual-plunging axles are encapsulated by Textron’s trailing arm design to minimize damage in the event of failure. 66

While not a big fan of large guided rides in the dry dusty desert, it is pretty much a necessity to get everyone acquainted with the machine and the layout of t e land. e first t in ou i ediately appreciate is the seating position, foot room and large, full coverage doors. The next thing I noticed was that it seriously soaks up the whoops like nothing we have experienced before. Most of today’s UTVs can eat the whoops while planed out at speed, but will pass a beating to the occupants while getting to speed. A good part of this beating comes from the tendency to swap side to side, as the suspension is going through its stroke.

atvworld atvworldmag.com

AFTER A SHORT INITIAL RIDE, WE REGROUPED AT BASE CAMP FOR A LONGER GUIDED TRAIL RIDE TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE OHV AREA. The Wildcat XX’s minimized side to side movement of the tires pays off in dividends when it comes to desert whoops. You can roll slowly into the throttle or stab it with the new Wildcat; it tracks straight and doesn’t have the normal tendency to swap the rear end around on you. The wife/photographer/co-dawg also immediately commented on how comfortable the ride was in comparison to the competition. Like we mentioned, all the top machines seem to really soak up the whoops at speed, and where the Wildcat XX really impresses is at less than mashed throttle, starting out, or everywhere in between. This is also not to say it wasn’t impressive at WFO thru the whoops, it’s just that a few other machines are pretty dang good there as well. After a short initial ride, we regrouped at base camp for a longer, guided trail ride to the other side of the OHV area. Everybody seemed excited about the handling and overall initial feeling of t e car. e tal as definitel eared toward suspension, and a lot of people were equally impressed by its ability to track straight while soaking up trophy truck sized whoops. We all left camp on a higher speed trail ride, with some really fun whoop sections and multiple opportunities to open it up. Top speed was a very 70

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 6

respectable 76 mph and it gets there in a hurry. “Robby was quick to assure us that the speed limiter is removable, and that it’s more than capable of a lot more.” Another cool feature with the XX was that it comes stock with 30 inch tires on super narrow offset 15” KMC wheels. What’s more, the oversized fenders will cover up to a 32” tire without rubbing. The ride across Stoddard Wells brought us to what the Textron engineers were really wanting to showcase, a massive and nasty rock crawling section. We put the Wildcat XX in low range with 4wd Diff-lock and pointed it up a rocky trail that would leave most UTVs struggling for traction, and possibly leaving the trail along the way. The diff lock selector s itc ile functional is definitel not the cleanest or easiest to operate. It ta es a inute to fi ure out ut reall it s not that bad, just a little awkward. The function of the diff lock system on the ot er and as a less and rainless. It finds traction e er ere and irtuall eliminates wheel slip. Ground clearance and skid plate protection was equally impressive, it takes some really poor decisions “or driving” to actually get it hung u on an o stacle t at e could find. The ride back to camp for lunch was sped up by taking a good portion of high speed dirt road, but everyone was leaning toward the hungry side at that point. On high speed dirt roads we notice that the EPS assistance seems to create really light steering. While this is definitel a dri er preference thing, we would appreciate a little more feedback or connected feel, while some really like the overall minimal resistance. When brought up

to the engineers, and Robby mentioned that he preferred it that way, it was also an easy internal change to be made, or could even be offered with multiple settings like the Can Am. The afternoon allotted some free time to drive the car, as well as photo time and a chance to ride with Robby around his test loop. They also had a stock Maverick X3 and a RZR XP1000 for back to back comparisons through the whoops. The brand new stock Can Am was the 120HP, 64” wide version Maverick X3 Turbo, which is pretty competitively priced with the Wildcat XX. The RZR was a 14/15 borrowed XP 1000 with miscellaneous aftermarket parts on it. I would say the Can Am was a very fair test, but the odified co arison ouldn t reall be admissible in court. Long story short, the Wildcat walked all over the RZR in the whoops. It was also better than the Can Am, but it felt a lot closer. All joking aside, with it’s heavy, wide offset deadlock wheels, the RZR felt almost rigid and heavier to any stock XP I had ever tested. Don’t let that take anything away from the Wildcat XX, as it was night and day better than both vehicles and really leaves you impressed, with or without a vehicle comparison.

atvworld atvworldmag.com

A RIDE WITH ROBBY As a longtime MX and OffRoad Racer, I have never been a fan of sitting on the right hand side of a vehicle. With that said, this was Robby Gordon behind the wheel! In reality, I’d actually spent a lot of time testing tires with WORCS Champion Beau Baron behind the wheel in this same desert, and just got back from co-driving the Baja 1000 with TerraCross and TORC Champion Jason Luburg. Both great drivers, but anyone else leaves me in a panic, and constantly looking for an out. Riding with Robby Gordon was more than just an opportunity to experience the Wildcat XX’s true ability, it was also a lesson on line choice, and full on desert o in fro t e est in t e usiness Robby can absolutely rip through his 1.5 mile test loop like it’s an oval track with nothing but lefts! He rarely lifts his foot off the gas, and gains ground clearance in areas that you wouldn’t think possible. While he had been testing on this course for a lot of this car’s development, it was still over the top impressive, even for a guy who’s not easily impressed. There wasn’t one minuscule spot on that loop that left me thinking I could have done it any faster or smoother. This guy came from, and truly is a perfect example of OffRoad Racing perfection behind the wheel, in the shop and on the drawing board.

BEING THAT OUR HEAD OFFICE FOR ATV WORLD MAGAZINE IS LOCATED IN THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE GLOBE, WE HAVE OLD MAN WINTER TO CONTEND WITH FOR ALMOST FOUR MONTHS OF OUR RIDING SEASON. We wanted to put together the ultimate winter buggy that would get us to the ice huts, over any obstacle, through the back woods, and even clear the driveway at the shop. With the help from Polaris, Kimpex, and Curtis Cabs, we present to you: The General of Winter.

The General of Winter was a big hit at the ATV World Booth at this years Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV & Powersports Show

T

he foundation to this build is the new 2017 Polaris General 1000. It goes without saying that if you read our articles on the General, we are in love with it. The crossover machine pretty much created its own segment, and is a side by side that perfectly bridges the gap between work and play. If you are not up to speed on the General 1000, it is a utility unit derived from its cousin the RZR 1000, sharing some of the sporty feel and look, with a very comparable 100HP 999cc engine, However, it stands alone from the RZR with an impressive 1,100 lb. payload capacity and 1,500 lb. towing capacity. The sporty side of the General comes from the Fox Podium Q3 suspension, with over 12” of travel and ground clearance, along with the fit and finish you would typically see in

a sport unit, like the seats, steering wheel and gauge cluster. Then, when you get to your worksite, the large rear dump box, standard 2” receiver, and payload capac capacity take over, and you are now ready to get the job done. To make the ultimate winter machine, we knew we needed to add a track kit, a plow system, and an enclosed cab system. For this we enlisted the help of our friends at Kimpex and Curtis industries. For the track system, it was without a doubt the Commander WSS4 from Kimpex that would be the choice for the build. Derived from RS4 track kit designed for ATVs, the WSS4 is the flagship for the Commander Line when it comes to Side x Side track kits. It features serious engineering and ingenuity that offers superior traction and unsurpassed steering ease, without too much in the reduction of speed.

For our install, we did have the advantage of commandeering a hoist at Logan’s place, so we found the install to be a little easier. First thing is to remove the stock wheels and layout the 4 track kits to match the location from front and back and the right and left. Kimpex makes this part easy, as everything is well labeled and colour coded with icons as to what is what. The track kit itself is pretty much fully assembled with the sprocket and track, however, there is a mounting plate that needs to be installed prior to mounting the track kit, as well as an Anti-Rotation Arm Set that needs to be installed onto the tracks. Follow the instructions as it is not t at difficult and e er t in is clearl marked. Once installed, you simply lift the track kit to the hub of the wheel and tighten with your existing wheel nuts. It is highly recommended to torque the nuts to Polaris’ suggested torque. Once you repeat that process for both the front and rear track kits, you lower the buggy back to t e oor. a e sure t is is a level surface, as there are now some adjustments and alignments that need to be done to Kimpex Specs. Again, the adjustments are clearly documented in the instruction manual, and you are basically setting correct pitch and toe to ensure the track kits are straight. After the adjustments were made, we took General down the road

and across the property for a good blast, and then brought it back into the shop and made sure the alignment was still correct, and gave all the bolts an extra once-over for tightness.

CLICK N GO PLOW KIT Once the track kit was installed, it was time to install the Click N Go plow system to the General. The Click N Go requires a winch to operate the plow up and down. Our General included a stock winch and it will get the job done, but we opted to install the heavier duty winch that is suggested from Kimpex. Installing the winch is breeze, as all the wiring is compatible, and you just need to remove the stock winch and replace the winch with the supplied Kimpex bolts, as they are longer than the stock bolts. It was now time to tackle the Click N Go Plow Kit install. For our application, because we added the track kit, we also needed to order the extension bar. The standard plow is designed to extend enough for wheels, but the track kit adds approximately 18” out the front, so that’s why the extension (part number 374968) is required. To install the extension kit, you will need to disassemble the stock 78

lo it and fit the extension in place. Now that the extension is added, it is time to install the mounting brackets and support plate for the Click N Go system. To install the plate, you will have to remove the stock plastic skid plate that comes on the General and store it for later use, as it is no longer needed. The two front bolts that hold the mounting plate use the pre existing holes found on the frame from where you removed the skid plate. Align the plate and loosely screw the front bolts on, then on the rear, you hang the supplied U-bolts over the

take on Old Man Winter. The WSS4 did not disappoint when it came to function. The engineers took a lot of time to create a system that allows your buggy to tackle an t in t at co es our a . e first concerns most have when looking at a track is the speed and performance.

Obviously, there is a slight speed reduction in the top end, and steering gets a bit heavier in 4 wheel drive, but we were shocked at how good the steering was in two wheel drive. The track kit will literally go over, or through anything you will come across during the winter. Huge snow banks are no match for the track kit, and the General took the deep power with ease. We also noticed that this General would be a beast in the really thick mud come springtime. It would be perfect for anyone that is heading out to t e fields durin t e s rin t a it confidence. Then when the snow really fell, it was a race to the shop to see who was going to e t e first to i e t e eneral of inter a try to plow the driveway. under a minute. To attach the plow, you simply drive your machine over the plow and lift into place. We found that by using a piece of 6” x 6” as a blocking to get the plow off the ground before you drive over it, makes the alignment way easier to install, and as a bonus, keeps the plow from freezing to the ground if you store it outside. The plow has manual side to side adjustments that allows you to direct the snow with ease, and with the 999cc powering the General with the track kit, this set up will push practically anything that Mother Nature would dump onto the ground. The powerful winch also allows you to push the snow up the bank. The trick we found was to plow to the bank, and slowly lift the plow with the winch as you throttle through the last few feet. The track kit will let you know when you are climbing the bank, so you can easily get the snow as high as you want on the bank. All of the riding we did this winter was done in the comfort of the Curtis Cab. The solid construction of the cab and the way the doors seal really made driving the General a real pleasure. We opted not to install a heater, however, we found you don’t really need it. The cab keeps the elements, wind and weather out, which is all you really need. If you were to install a heater, you would be able to drive your General to the ice hit in a t-shirt. If you, like us at ATV World, have to deal with Mother Nature in the Northern Hemisphere, then we would suggest you look at also becoming the General of Winter. 80

Horsepower Wa r s In 2017, Polaris topped the 154 HP Maverick X3 with a boost to 168 HP on the RZR XP Turbo. Not to be outdone, Can Am engineers countered with a +18 Hp gain on the 2018 Model Maverick X3 Turbo R, putting down a class leading 172 HP at 7,250 RPM. A 12% horsepower bump and a 10% increase in torque brings unprecedented performance. In fact, a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds makes it the fastest accelerating stock side by side on the market, not to mention being on par with cars like Ford’s new Mustang GT. To make a long story short, the 172 HP Maverick X3 Turbo R platform is a beast, as well as the continued class leader. 84

With the 2018 model leading the charge at 172 HP, the guys who bought 2017 models might really feel left in t e dust it t eir si nificantl slo er machines. Luckily for this large group of enthusiasts and racers, Can Am even took care of them with an all-inclusive, reasonably priced power upgrade kit. The 18 HP gain brings it to 172, like the 2018, and includes a new intercooler w/fan, fuel pump, headpipe, a high performance clutch belt, and a reprogrammed ECU. One of the best parts of this kit is retaining the vehicles warranty.

THE BIGGEST NEWS ON THE X3 X RC TURBO R IS PROBABLY THE SMART-LOK TECHNOLOGY FRONT LOCKER

atvworld atvworldmag.com

T h e M av e r i c k X 3 X R C T u r b o R

This new rock crawling edition is built on top of the 72” wide, race ready Maverick X3 X chassis, with the 172 hp intercooler ACE engine. The biggest news on the X3 X RC Turbo R is probably the Smart-Lok Technology front locker, but it includes a handful of other much appreciated upgrades like a factory mounted winch, half doors, and tons of extra protection. That’s right, a 72” wide Maverick with HD factory skid plates, increased cage safety, 30” tires and top of the line suspension. If this doesn’t already sound like the machine to beat, wait until you hear about the Smart-Lok technology and the next-level traction it creates.

Smart-Lok Can-Am’s exclusive Smart-Lok system starts with a front differential that is fully loc a le on t e ia electronicall controlled automatic modes, or with the push of a button to preset, intelligent cali rations for our s ecific t e of ridin . There is also a “Smart Mode” that uses multiple input sources to instantaneously engage diff-locking with the right load, at just the right moment. This technology is an s first to trul i e dri ers a imum traction while retaining low-speed maneuverability. Looking at the dash, the Smart-Lok adds two new toggle switches to switch between the four modes. The driver can simply toggle between 2wd, fully locked 4wd, 4x4 Trail Active Rock mode and 4wd Trail, without even stopping the vehicle. While activated by a simple toggle switch, Smart-Lok’s operation is anything but sim-

ple. The fully locked 4wd simply engages the front locking differential, but Trail and Rock modes are much more intuitive. The system instantaneously gathers info/signals from six different vehicle inputs, with a front differential module processing this info to apply just the right amount of traction for the immediate terrain. The Rock mode will actually apply front diff clutch pressure to eliminate wheel slip, based on axle feedback. This smart function allows the driver to concentrate on the obstacles, without worry of breaking traction with too much throttle. The “trail” mode applies just the right amount of front wheel traction for optimum handling and steering, in just about any other situation. The Smart-Lok system gathers constant and immediate intel including speed from both front wheels, and actual vehicle speed. It also monitors steering angle, how much of the accelerator pedal you’re using or its position, engine torque and gear position. All this info is processed simultaneously and immediately to provide the user with the ultimate in next level traction and ride quality. To take full advantage of this system, BRP couples it with their QRS-X transmission that has been calibrated to virtually eliminate turbo-lag. The RC also gets EBS and Hill Descent Control for mass amounts of mindless control, even when it’s time to let off the gas.

N e xt - L e v e l P r ot ect i o n The RC edition Maverick comes loaded with protective features like you’ve never seen before on a stock machine. When a vehicle is designed to be smashed through some of the toughest, most punishing terrain on the planet, you better come prepared for the beating. The RC edition includes Pro level protection for both man and machine. The HSA ROPS cage includes front intrusion bars, an aluminum roof, and clean-looking half doors right from the factory. BRP has also included a retractable 4-point harness that even works with stock safety cut-out if it is unbuckled.

Vehicle and component protection is equally as impressive with the RC edition as they use High Molecular Weight skid plates and suspension armour. HMW is a crazy durable plastic that has been used by high-end aftermarket skid plate companies for a few years now. CanAm gave the RC HMW belly skids, rock sliders, and a-arm/trailing arm protection that will rival anything that’s currently available from the aftermarket. Speaking of areas that won’t be needing help from the aftermarket, the Maverick RC also gets equipped with super tough, 8 Ply Maxxis Liberty Tires on 14” aluminum beadlock rims.

This 72” wide X3 RC gets the same top the line Xrs FOX Podium 2.5 front and 3.0 rear RC2 HPG Internal ByPass (IBP) shocks. These shocks are literally as good as it gets with dual-rate springs, adjustable cross-overs and dual-speed compression, rebound and preload. The X3’s impressive suspension cycles 22” of wheel travel up front, 24” in the rear with sway bars on either end to minimize body roll and maximize high speed control. The RC edition adds arched lower a-arms and control links for increased ground clearance. This is far and away more suspension travel than any other manufacturer’s a s i and it s co ined it some of the best shocks on the market.

O u t s i d e A s s i sta n c e

While unlikely, should the RC edition ever meet its match along the trail, it also comes with a high-performance winch. Just in case, BRP tucks a 4,500 lb. capacity winch with synthetic rope, cleanly behind the front bumper. Whether it be needed for you or your friends along the trail, should you need it, it’s already there. Speaking of prepared, front and rear tow anchors are standard as well.

The 64” RC Edition With the X3 X RC Turbo R being clearly the biggest, baddest, and most expensive Maverick to date, Can-Am didn’t want the c ance at a oc ra lin s ecific achine to seem out of reach to the masses. Let me introduce the 64” wide Maverick X3 X RC Turbo, based on the 64” chassis with the 120HP non-intercooled, turboc ar ed ota en ine. or si nificantl less bread, you can still get the lockable front differential with Smart-Lok technology. You will also still get the QRS-X transmission with EBS, and Hill Descent Control, and you will still get all the HMW protection, 4 point belts, and the 4,500 lb. winch.

The 64” model cuts the wheel travel back to 20 inches front and rear, which is still class leading with the exception of Can Am’s own 72” wide offering. The fully adjustable RC2 IBP shocks are replaced by FOX 2.5 Podium Piggybacks with QS3 compression adjustment at all four corners. You will still get the 30”Maxxis Liberty tires, but without the beadlock. The intrusion bars and lower door halves, and aluminum roof are missing as well, but all of them are available in the BRP accessory catalog. While we know these shocks are a few steps back from the IBP stuff when looking at adjustability and features, they still work amazingly well, and provide an excellent ride for just about any terrain.

FIRST OFF I WOULD LIKE TO REITERATE THAT IN A FULL ON DESERT RACING TYPE SITUATION, THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO THE “RACE WIDTH” 72” WIDE PLATFORM, ESPECIALLY WITH IT’S IBP SHOCKS. The Ride We recently got the opportunity for some seat time in Can Am’s latest a s i ac ine. ile not as uc ti e as we would like to spend with it, the time was well spent testing in the exact place this thing is built for. Johnson Valley, home of the King of the Hammers desert/ rock crawling race was our test bed, and we couldn’t have been more impressed with this machine’s performance and the comfort and stability it exhibits. We tested the 72” wide, 172HP X3 X RC Turbo R in the sand, in the whoops, and in the rocks. First off, I would like to reiterate that in a full-on desert racing type situation, there is no comparison to the “race width” 72” wide platform, especially with its IBP shocks. It’s comfortable at speed, stable as all get out, and eats whoops for breakfast. It also happens to be the fastest stock UTV you can buy, and it quickly reminds you of this every time you lay into the throttle. Being that I hadn’t been in a Maverick X3 in quite some time, I was also excited and impressed by the

88

ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 6

atvworld atvworldmag.com

seating position. Can Am claims they started the X3 with the super low seat height that they envisioned, and then built around it. I can honestly attest to the fact that you sit in it, not on it, and it feels truly unique in comparison to any other UTV on the market. The low CG is very impressive and confidence ins irin e en en factorin in the taller than average 30” tires. You sit down in this machine and feel like you can put it anywhere you could possibly ant. e at otto ed or s a ed steering wheel also seems to scream performance like a supercar.

DPS IS ANOTHER COOL BRP FEATURE THAT IS OFTEN TAKEN FOR GRANTED.

DPS is another cool BRP feature that is often taken for granted. The DPS switch toggles between two different levels of steering assist. This is especially useful on a multi-purpose vehicle like t e t at ill find itself doin mph through the desert, and just as at home doing three miles an hour up a rock waterfall or creek bed. We also appreciate the 1.5 turn steering rack which is very similar to a steering quickener on a RZR, it is the only way to go in the more technical terrain, but still controllable at higher speeds. We tried and were impressed with the Smart Lok 4wd Trail mode in the sandy, whooped out desert course sections. Steering is still light and predictable, and it easily carries great momentum out of the turns. It is truly the mode that you can just set it and forget it, and be faster in just about any situation or terrain. As for a rocky opportunity to try out the full diff lock and Rock mode, we had plenty of that as well. Johnson Valley

is known for its massive rock piles and infamous crazy rock crawling obstacles. For merely demonstration, you can use the fully locked front differential to climb from a dead stop to up and over any rock obstacle/boulder that doesn’t leave you high centered. Pretty much as long as you can keep a wheel in contact, it will climb it. After playing on single boulder obstacles, we opted for an uphill waterfall type situation to test the Rock mode. Unlike most other UTV differential modes, the X3’s Rock mode can be engaged at any speed. Its ability to adapt to the terrain with internal clutching pressure is like nothing we’ve ever driven. The Rock mode all but limits wheel slip. You can literally stomp on the gas to create the power you need, but it will limit speed and output to remain in optimum traction. When you get off the rocks, the mode also still allows you to drive aggressively to the next obstacle. This is truly going to be the machine to beat at the KOH event for years to come.

Final Thoughts The Maverick X3 X RC Turbo R is so much more than just a rock crawling model. The Smart Lok Diff, along with every other cool feature on this model will be equally as enticing to the desert guy, as well as the desert racer. This machine has it all, it’s super-fast, well equipped, and ready for anything you could throw at it. If you have the trail width for a 72” machine, you will love everything that the X3 X RC Turbo R brings to the table. 90

THE ANSWER CAME TO US DURING A SNEAK PEEK INVITATION ONLY EVENT AT ERX MOTOR PARK IN ELK RIVER, MINNESOTA LAST FALL. The

event was a mash-up of activities includin a edia first ride manufacturer photography and video shoot, and a social media exhibition race. While the day turned out to be a hodgepodge of activities, the true star of the day was the new RZR RS1. At face value, the new RS1 appears to be a simple execution of transforming an existing RZR into a sin le seat e icle. ile a first lance a earance ill confir this take, a deeper look reveals a buggy with greater engineering and purpose-built intentions.

LES S IS M ORE

The basic design principles used to create the new RS1consists of three main areas of focus. Make the vehicle lighter and more balanced; make the vehicle more driver centric; and make the vehicle tough as nails. While we can’t vouch for the third element until the RS1 gets into the always abusive hands of the customer, the Polaris engineering team delivered elsewhere. t first lus t e inc stance of t e RS1 would lead you to believe the foundation of the vehicle sits atop an XP1000 chassis. You’d be mostly right, but the engineering design team looked for ways to trim weight and in the process, shorten the wheelbase by 7-inches to a nimbler 83-inches, compared to the stretched 90-inch wheelbase of the RZR XP1000. Staying put was the 110-horsepower ProStar 1000HO. While the shorter wheelbase certainly contributes to the nimble and quick to

react nature of the RS1, undoubtedly, it’s the centralized driver position playing a much larger role. Moving the driver to middle of the chassis not only allowed Polaris to remove unnecessary hardware and body panels, it more importantly resulted in a vehicle with far greater centralized mass. The RS1 is more balanced, both from side-to-side as well as fore-to-aft. Send the RS1 off a berm and t e u ta es i t it a sli t nose up” attitude, something other RZR models can t re licate it out odification. l in at is nice ut t e centrali ed mass delivers far more satisfying results when the trail gets twisted. Crank the wheel with abruptness and the buggy reacts with instant results and greatly reduced body roll and unwanted inside tire lift. This is especially true when turning left; a situation where a traditional side-by-side would be more weighted to the driver’s side.

THE POLARIS CREW LIKES TO REFER TO THE RS1 AS A RALLY VEHICLE, AND THE RACEINSPIRED AND INTENDED NATURE IS EVIDENT FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT. ATV WORLD MAGAZINE • VOL 14 • ISSUE 6

WIDE OPEN BODY WORK FULLY EXPOSES THE TIRES, GIVING THE DRIVER COMPLETE VISIBILITY TO SELECT THE IDEAL LINE.

cente r of atte nti on ro e ind t e eel t e enefits of the RS1 driver-centric design are immediately noticeable. Forward and peripheral sight-lines are superior to other RZR odels i in ou reater confidence and accuracy when navigating technical terrain. This center-of-the-action position is more than just improved visual attributes, you also feel more connected to RS1 and the terrain. Sitting in the center of the vehicle not just from side-to-side, but also from back to front, allows you to more accurately decipher the attitude of the vehicle. This allows you to make better driving decisions with greater accuracy. What’s more the cockpit ergonomics have been greatly improved. With more room for legs, knees, and arms. While Polaris didn t offer u s ecifics on o much more room they created, we could feel the difference, especially in regard to arm movement. However, our 6-foot, 2-inch frame still felt cramped below the waist, and the two-stage, stepped brake pedal occupies

ore oor s ace lea in little roo for our size-13 boots. The Polaris crew likes to refer to the RS1 as a rally vehicle, and the raceinspired and intended nature is evident from the driver’s seat. Beyond the aforementioned “stepped” brake pedal, which allows hard-core drivers to operate the RS1 two-footed (one on the gas and one on the brake), other elements such as standard fi e oint arness and side mount controls further contribute to the race first desi n. Wide open body work fully exposes the tires, giving the driver complete visibility to select the ideal line. This is especially true in low-speed maneuvers such as rock crawling. Yet the unprotected design also leaves the driver susceptible to full blasts of roost from the front tire. From mud to sand to sticks and rocks, the RS1 can and ill in all t es of de ris into the cab.

From the outside looking in, the centralized cab of the RS1 doesn t loo uc different ut once inside ou ll find ore room, especially across the chest and shoulders, allowing for elbows up, rally-inspired “wheel man” duties.

A more advantageous power-toweight ratio gives the RS1 improved performance over the same powered XP1000. We had no problem getting the RS1 up to blur speeds, keeping the front-end light all the while.

The openness of the cab and the unprotected nature of the front and rear wheels means you will roost yourself. In loam soil, we quickly had a lap full of black dirt after just a few turns.

Before Polaris pulled the sheets off the new RS1 they shared a slice of market data which indicated a majority of current RZR owners ride alone. This data point, along with an improved competitive edge, and very attractive MSRP of $13,999 (US) and $16,999 (CAN), should make the RS1 a very palatable vehicle for future customers looking for a performance edge at a price they can afford. On paper the reasoning makes perfect sense, yet while most often ride alone, having the ability to bring a friend or si nificant ot er still remains an important part of the decision-making process. For certain the price and the competition focused performance of the RS1 will make it reason enough to take a seat behind the wheel for some; especially in the Southwest US market where weekends with family in the dunes is a priority. Here a pair of RS1 vehicles would equal the value many families have in their one-vehicle RZR, opening up a two-for-one trade up opportunity. As for the rest of the market, the RS1 might be a tougher sell; ut re ardless Polaris as t e nic e filled e en if no one else knew it was open.
