T
his winter represents CSRA’s 23rd. year of promoting professional Snowcross Racing event’s in Canada. Our 2017 race series features two new race sites and a variety of new race track configurations to challenge our racers. This year, CSRA has introduced a new “PRO” race class that will permit our Pro-Lite and Pro Open racers opportunity to compete head to head on Stock limited build race sleds. The only engine performance modification permitted is an aftermarket exhaust silencer. This new class will permit all our Pro racers to
compete on equal equipment providing an inexpensive and fair opportunity to show their riding talent. To support the new “PRO” race class, Mike Jackson GM will award a loaded 2017 Chevy HD 2500 4x4 Duramax Diesel Pick-up truck to the overall PRO class Champion. Also new this year CSRA has introduced a Snow Bike racing class. The Snow Bike revolution has started in Western Canada and CSRA hopes to help grow the sport in Eastern Canada at each of our Snowcross events. This evolving sport provides
opportunity for recreational dirt bike riders and Motocross racers to enjoy their motorcycles year round. Our 2017 Rockstar Energy National Race series will feature racers from Canada, the USA, and Europe, racers will compete head to head at (16) races starting with our Season Opener “International Snowcross Grand-Prix” in Rouyn-Noranda Quebec, to the Mystik / Dayco National Finals, a (3) day event at Horseshoe Resort March 31 – April 2. Partners like Rockstar Energy Drink, Dayco Belts, Mystik Lubricants, Royal Distributing, MBRP, Mike Jackson GM, the OEM manufactures and their dealers, and our aftermarket sponsors. They all do their part to keep our race series strong, vibrant and exciting. Without the generous support of our sponsors, our race series simply could not happen. PROFILE
ince its inception in 1994, the CSRA (Canadian Snowcross Racing Association) has been a governing body that organizes, promotes, and regulates snowmobile competitions within the province of Ontario and at selected events throughout Canada and through affiliate partners within the United States. The CSRA was created to help racers, manufacturers and sponsors benefit from the ever-expanding sport of professional snowmobile racing. The mission of the CSRA is to bring the sport of snowmobile racing to its highest level. The CSRA strives to bring sponsors, racers,
manufacturers and racing fans the most organized, visible circuit in the industry. Snowcross is today’s most popular form of snowmobile racing. Competitors race around motocross-style tracks that feature tight turns, banked corners, and a variety of jumps allowing racers to catch “big air” in full view of spectators. Spanning 9 events from January through March, the CSRA travels to key Powersports markets within Canada and also partners with select events in the United States. The series is home to hundreds of racers and stages its events in front of thousands of spectators at each event. Sponsors of the
CSRA benefit from a captive audience of race fan attendance totaling over 40,000 for the season. CSRA race fans are a mix of young families whose head of household is between the age of 30 and 50 years and single males between the ages of 18 and 54 years old. Occupations of the head of the household are evenly split between white and blue collar professionals with household incomes in excess of $85,000 per annum. CSRA racers, spectators and vendors are linked by a love of the great outdoors and their passion for the sport of snowmobiling.

CSRA SNOWCROSS
O
ne of the missions of the Canadian Snowcross Racing Association is to continue growing the sport of Snowcross. CSRA makes it easy for the whole family to get involved in racing. In fact, you don’t even need a race sled, new racers can compete with stock trail sleds. To make it fair, modifications are not permitted with the exception that you can change or replace handlebars, shocks, and skis. To prepare the sled to
compete all you need to do is cover the headlight and tail light with clear tape and ensure that the sled has a snow flap and a functional tether cord kill switch and a handle bar shut off switch. Rider safety equipment including (approved helmet, goggles, knee pads, and TekVests) are available to rent at each event if you don’t have your own. If a National seems like too much, CSRA Regional events offer a more relaxed
atmosphere and take place throughout Ontario and Quebec. Snowcross racing provides opportunity for kids and adults to meet new friends, socialize and compete in a sport that is safe, competitive, professional and fun. Snowcross racing classes for kids, boys, girls, women and first time racers, are available at all CSRA Regional events.

FLAGS CSRA Snowcross is much like other forms of racing. Track workers communicate with the racers through the use of colored flags. By knowing what these flags mean fans can have a better understanding of what is going on in the race. Here’s a breakdown of the flags CSRA fans might see at a race.
Green Flag or Light
The green flag is used to start the race and to signal the racers that all is clear.
Yellow Flag
The yellow flag warns riders to be cautious, that there is an incident on the track ahead of them. Riders can’t “race” through a yellow flag zone, meaning they can’t do things like pass other riders and the sled’s track can’t leave the snow.
Red Flag
A red flag means the race has been stopped. The race will re-start with the riders in the order they were in when the race was stopped. Riders can’t work on their sleds while the race is stopped due to a red flag.
White Flag
The white flag signals the riders they are starting the last lap of the race.
Black Flag
A black flag means the rider has done something that is against the rules. A furled black flag (flag wrapped around the stick) pointed at a rider means the rider has done something to gain the official’s attention and if they continue to do what has been done to gain the official’s attention they will receive an open black flag. An open black flag means a rider has received a penalty. It is not an automatic disqualification. For example, a rider may simply be asked to pull over and let a rider they passed illegally go by.

CLASS For 2017 CSRA has implemented a Snow Bike Exhibition class. With the advent of manufacturers such as Polaris and Arctic Cat manufacturing snow bikes and snow bike components, as well as aftermarket kit options, there is a profound interest in the snow bike. CSRA wants to bring them to the fans so they can see what they’re all about. The Snow Bike class is an exhibition class, which means there are no points and no championship, simply a race day winner. AND PHOTOGRAPHY
If you see a photographer on track, chances are it is CSRA circuit photographer and social media specialist Shelby Mahon. Mahon started her business, Backcountry Motorsports Media, so she could pursue a career dedicated to the industry she loves. She was raised in Northern Ontario where she grew up riding snowmobiles, ATVs and PWC’s. At 21 she made the move from recreational riding to racing snowmobiles and SxS at a professional level, and after graduating with her Bachelor of Arts and Journalism diploma she started pulling double duty photographing CSRA races while also racing in the Pro Women’s class. Since then, Mahon has semi-retired from snowcross to pursue extreme racing competitions like Red Bull Snowboundaries. She’s also expanded her business to cover motorcross, watercross and SxS races along with other powersports events. Mahon was recently invited to photograph the Winter X Games, a feather in the cap of any winter sports photographer. Mahon’s passion for this industry has given her the opportunity to pursue a full time career doing something she truly loves and she wants to thank all of her clients and sponsored riders for their continued support.

E
ach year, snowmobile manufacturers enter competitions with the best snowmobiles they’ve built to date. The machines you see on the CSRA National racetracks represent the best technology in snowmobiling and are some of the fastest, most capable terrain machines on the planet. Here is a rundown of what you will see from each manufacturer in 2017.
SKI-DOO MX ZX 600RS S tarts are key in snowcross racing and Ski-Doo worked in the offseason to put its racers on a machine with optimized off-theline performance. The 2017 MX Zx 600RS has a revised pDrive clutch calibration, improved cam in the secondary clutch and revised slipper gear in the chaincase to help starting line performance. Improved coupling in the rear suspension is intended to help with traction at the starting line as well as getting the power down through
36
the bumps. The engine returns virtually unchanged, but retains its potent crankshaft/drive clutch/stator combo designed to spin to the 8,000RPM redline as fast as possible. The pDrive clutch was new last year and provides reduced friction during operation and it’s design is lighter and requires less maintenance. It keeps Ski-Doo’s adjustable clickers and combines them with oversized rollers on needle bearings. KYB shocks round out the sled.

YAMAHA SRVIPER R-TX SE I t is not known if Yamaha will compete in snowcross in 2017, but if they do it will likely be with a version of the 2017 SRViper R-TX SE. Based on the Arctic Cat-derived chassis, the SRViper usesFOX Shox and Yamaha’s Dual Shock SR 129 rear suspension. The 1049cc 4-Stroke engine has 600cc 2-Stroke performance
numbers and will be able to use its torque to help power off the line. The engine uses Yamaha YVXC fuel injection and a high flow intake and exhaust design. Hayes brakes and slow everything down while a Rip Saw II track provides the bite.

POLARIS 600R S porting new, narrow bodywork for 2017, the Polaris 600R returns to snowcross with a host of subtle changes aimed at keeping its racers competitive. The AXYS-based platform is a full 10-inches narrower thanks to new bodywork that brings a new intake system, plenum, windshield, headlight and exhaust with it. Riders also get a new 600R Digital Message Center Gauge to help monitor the sled’s performance. The footrest area has been
re-worked so it has less drag in the corners and provides better venting. Improved steering features a post that’s 13.5-degrees flatter than last year’s sled, and steering effort is reduced thanks to a better ratio. New clutch weights should provide better performance off the line while power will transfer through a more durable drive belt. The 600R rides on Walker Evans shocks again for 2017.

ARCTIC CAT ZR 6000 R SX W ith it’s 2017 contender, the ZR 6000R SX, Arctic Cat becomes the first manufacturer to introduce a purposebuilt snowcross sled to come equipped with EFI. For Arctic Cat racers that will mean more consistent running and less tuning - when it comes to fuel anyway. The new engine meant a bunch of changes to go with it including new engine mounting, a new front heat exchanger, new exhaust system, new air box and a host of electrical upgrades. The engine should make more power with the help of Speedwerx cylinder porting and a new cylinder head

profile. While that’s the biggest news on the sled, there are a ton of refinements to the 2017 machine Arctic Cat racers are counting on to put them on the podium. Some of the more noteworthy items include stronger spindles, modified track with improved lug durability and a TSS-04 TEAM secondary that should improve backshift. Riders will like the new handlebar grips and Power Sport gauge with speed, RPM, water temp, exhaust temp and voltage readouts. Returning features include FOX Shox and C&A Pro skis.

IAN HAYDEN Eight Times is a Charm Iain Hayden has become the unofficial face of CSRA Snowcross. With eight championships to his credit, he officially owns 35-percent of all Pro Open championships in CSRA history. Through all this, Hayden has remained as approachable as he was when he first hit the circuit with a pickup and pull-behind trailer. These days he is part of the OTSFF/Rockstar/Polaris snowcross team, and for the coming season will serve as a sort of mentor for its riders will taking part in some racing, but he’ll be stepping back from the Pro Open ranks. We caught up with Hayden to find out what it’s like to win eight championships, who were the big influencers in his career and what’s on the horizon as he steps away from the CSRA ranks.
OSM: You’re the 2016 Pro Open champion, did you ever think you’d win eight championships? Iain Hayden: No! Not at all. But once I got rolling with it, it just worked out great.
OSM: Last season – what went well? Hayden: Everything. I had a really good season. Andre Laurent, my team owner, and the OTSFF Rockstar Polaris worked great. We changed up the crew a little, I had some new techs who were really great – Wayne Legge, Brad Bolt and Terry King. Halfway through the year I got my hands on the new race chassis – they call the 600R but it has the AXYS body work on it. It was essentially the
2017 race sled. That was a game changer for me. I rode Ross Martin’s sled at the Winter X Games and afterward I told Tom Rager Jr. the Race Director at Polaris, “I don’t know how you expect me to go home and ride that old chassis now!” The new bodywork was great, the new steering post was good, it was such an improvement. Once we got the new sled we won four of five finals at the end of the year. If it wasn’t for a broken shock we might have swept them.
OSM: So the 2017 Polaris, that will be a big step forward for the team? Hayden: It’s six and a half inches narrower, the steering post is very upright, it’s a huge change. It’s not just plastics, its no joke. I changes how you sit and stand on the sled
and makes a big difference in how it works.
OSM: You have some new things going on with the OTSFF Rockstar Polaris team, can you tell us about those? Hayden: This year I’ll be stepping back from the Pro racing. Now I’ll be sort of a brand ambassador for the team and Cale Callan will be racing Pro Lite, Colby Crapo will race Pro Open under the Huber Motorsports banner, R.J. Roy, last year’s Pro Lite champion will be racing Pro Lite again for Huber Motorsports as well. Colby and R.J. know what’s going on, but I’ll be there to help Cale transition to Pro Lite. I’ll aslo do some Pro +30 stuff in the U.S.
41
IAN HAYDEN
OSM: You still have MotoPark and that’s going well?
But nothing jumps out at me because there were so many people and things that were instrumental.
Hayden: Yes, but I’m always thinking what’s next, so I feel really fortunate that I was able to put this deal together for the facility in Florida.
OSM: Are you looking forward to being a father?
OSM: You’ve worked with a lot of great people in your career – Andre Laurent, Blair Morgan Racing Team, Yamaha, Polaris, Rockstar – is there anything that stands out? Hayden: Honestly? I don’t know. They were all so instrumental and they all played a key part in making me who I am. Andre’s been involved the longest because we started together in 2003 and now it’s 2016. We just wanted to go racing and be a part of it and had no idea we were going to start winning. He’s a big part of what I do and we still talk almost daily. Racing with Blair was huge. He’s an icon, and once we got to know each other we got along well. I learned a ton from him, mostly to have a level head and to be cool. I try to model myself after his style.
42
Hayden: I think of how I was raised and all the fun things I did with my dad and we do just as much fun stuff if not more, so I think our kids going to have a riot. We’ll get to watch them grow and share stuff with them. I get kids here for weeks during the summer at the motocross camp, but then they leave to go back home. Now I get to be that parent with the rose-tinted glasses, so I’m looking forward to it.
OSM: What are your goals in your new role this season: Hayden: I want to see the team achieve. I want to help Cale with any sort of hard decisions he faces and help him achieve goals. After that I want focus on Making this new
motocross deal work out in Florida. I have my work cut out for me as far as that goes. I’ll fly to the events and participate but other than that I’ll be working on this new venture.
OSM: Iain Hayden is officially retiring from Pro Open? Hayden: It was a difficult decision. I don’t want to get greedy. I exceeded everything that I ever wanted to achieve. When I was a young kid I never had a clue that this is where life would take me. For that I’m grateful. My wife and I are happily married and I’m not done growing these businesses. I just made a deal on a motocross facility in Florida, so I’ll run the MotoPark track up here from April to November then we’ll be in Florida from November until April. Now we’re expecting a baby in March. So it was already in the back of mind, and typically after Labor Day weekend I really get motivated because summer’s over, but for the first time in my life I was actually kind of relieved I didn’t have the season in front of me. So I think I made the right decision.

R.J ROY Straight To The Top If there’s a Cinderella story on the CSRA circuit one could argue R.J. Roy’s fits the bill. While he grew up riding motocross, Roy discovered snowcross and never looked back. Battling it out in the ranks of the privateers for the past five years, Roy caught the eye of Gerhard Huber, owner of Huber Motorsports, last season, earning support from the team. It was all Roy needed. He won the Pro Lite points championship and a spot on the Huber Motorsports team for the coming season. We caught up with Roy to find out what it’s like to transition from motocross to snowcross, why a good sled matters and what his plans are for the coming season.
OSM: You’re the Pro Lite points champion, what has that been like for you? R.J. Roy: It’s been pretty cool. It wasn’t what I thought, it kind of came and went, so I just thought, “OK, what’s next?” So now I’m striving for more. It was a pretty surreal feeling, to win a championship in a sport, because I was at it so long in motocross and never got one. I came close but never did. So to do it last year in snocross was awesome.
tired and it finally broke at Rouyn, and then Gerhard Huber stepped up and gave me a sled. At that point my pursuit of the championship started. Getting that new sled was a huge confidence boost. I knew I could ride and at that point I knew I had a good sled.
OSM: Now you’re part of the Huber Motorsports team? Roy: It’s been such a surreal experience. I’ve been here since August and I’ve been training with the team.
OSM: What went well last year:
OSM: You started in motocross, how long have you been racing snowmobiles?
Roy: I think it was a lot of me growing up, I grew up as a person and started realizing some things. I started taking responsibility for things instead of putting blame on things going wrong or certain circumstances. One I did that and realized it was up to me, things started to turn around. I was doing well last year but my sled was
Roy: I think this is my fifth or sixth season, but last season was my first full season where I competed in every round. All of the other seasons I missed one or two rounds.
44
OSM: What do you do in your free time? Roy: I like driving around, I spend a lot of time in my truck. It’s been a spot of comfort for me. I live in the North so I go in the bush a lot. If I don’t want people around I will drive out and just sit, open the windows, no cars, no cell service, just the forest. It’s a great feeling.
OSM: What do you bring from motocross? Roy: I turned Pro in motocross in 2013, I’ve been racing motocross since I was 8. We never got into snocross, we never really knew what it was. The first race I went to I went to watch my cousin and I was like, “Wow, I wish I could do that.” It was just like motocross but on a sled. A couple weeks later I tried it and my sled just kept breaking, so we went and bought an IQR and we’ve been on Polaris ever since.
OSM: You are defending your championship in Pro Lite this year, did you have any thoughts on Pro Open? Roy: We had a mod that we bought, so I’ve ridden one, but we didn’t anticipate Huber Motorsports bringing me on board. So we were going to try it. But this year I’ll race Pro Lite again. The rules allow you to defend your championship for one year and Polaris wanted me to ride the class again.
OSM: Have you gotten to know the team? Roy: We already knew them from two years ago, we had gone to dinner together and things like that. So last year they gave us a sled and we took it to our trailer and did all the race weekend stuff, then we would give it back to them at the end of the weekend. So we were in their trailer a lot and got to know them. It’s a real family atmosphere with Huber Motorsports. Gerhard Huber is one of the best. He treats you like family and we felt really welcomed.
OSM: What are your thoughts headed into the season? Roy: I was just thinking the other day; I’m going to be on a sled in a month! But I haven’t been able to ride at all because I cased a jump riding moto and sprained my ankle. It’s October and I’ve just started working out on it. Hubers have a track here and I haven’t been able to ride, so it’s been tough to deal with.
OSM: What are your goals for the season? Roy: I want to defend my championship, that would be great. Other than that, just stay healthy, ride safe and have fun. I am hoping to learn a lot. My teammate Colby Crapo is a veteran rider and I’m hoping to learn from him.
AN EASY WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR RIDE.

MEET THE KARKOULAS SISTERS Small Kids Making a Big Impact Every parent wants to give their child the opportunity to reach for the stars; to dare to dream big and be everything that they can be. For the Karkoulas family, their mission was no different. Troy, an avid snowmobiler and former Pro-Snowcross Racer, wanted to pass on his skill, knowledge and passion for the sport to the next generation. Troy started racing in the late 1990’s, and raced in the pro series from 2002-2003. However, like many fathers, his racing ceased as his focus turned to starting a family of his own.
H
e and his wife, Rebecca, were blessed with three daughters, and blessed even further when all three of them expressed an interest in snowcross at young ages. Brooklyn (eldest) started racing in the Canadian Snowcross Racing Association (CSRA) Series shortly after getting her first snowmobile, and her sisters were quick to follow. Zoe (youngest) started racing at age four, making her the youngest racer at CSRA events that season. For this family, snowcross represents more than just a sport or hobby; it represents a lifestyle, a connection and shared bond that
46
runs deep in their roots and will forever be a part of their family. Rebecca is the glue that holds the team together, ensuring that the girls are mentally and physically prepared to race; while Troy puts his 20 years of technical experience to good use as he makes sure the teams’ sleds are race-ready. The 2015-2016 season was a tricky year for 9-year-old Dakota, who was on a full sized snowmobile, a Ski-Doo MXZ 600 Sport, for the first time. She demonstrated growth throughout the season as she became increasingly comfortable on her sled. Dakota set personal
season, with a nomination for “Athlete of the Week” by City News Toronto, media coverage on CHEX TV, and local newspaper coverage. The team has consistently focused on supporting the same message: that girls can do anything they put their mind to. Using the slogan, “It’s not if we can, it’s when”, the girls hope that by sharing their story and love of snowcross, they will in turn support more female racers to get involved in racing snowcross. They have also teamed up with the Laps for MD organization, to give back to the community and support research for Muscular Dystrophy in Canada. At such young ages, the Karkoulas Sisters are following in their father’s footsteps (or shall we say race tracks?) while they work hard and race harder to become the top women’s snowcross team in Canada and beyond. Already breaking records, these young ladies are well on their way to making snowcross history. goals for herself, and was able to overcome each one with grace, style and an ever-so mysterious smile.
Six-year-old Zoe raced hard last season, ultimately earning title of National Champion in the 120 Stock 1 class, and third overall in Stock 2. She continually demonstrated a positive attitude, and was quick to offer support to her teammates and competitors when needed. Ten-year-old Brooklyn demonstrated a trend of great holeshots and smooth, consistent riding last season. Her biggest accomplishment was earning the title of National Champion in Transition Girls, making her parents proud, and honouring the No. 500 adjourned on her sled (a symbol of her father’s past racing background). The season was a great one, filled with triumphs, challenges and of course, lots of fun. The Karkoulas’ sister’s energy, positivity, and passion for snowcross was evident at every single race. As Canada’s first all-female snowcross team composed of three sisters, the team certainly received a great deal of media coverage throughout the

CALE CALLAN Sport Class Champion Moves To Pro Lite Cale Callan started the 2016 Season as an underdog in his first season racing the Sport 600 class. With seasoned racers set to participate in the class the competition was going to be intense. Although he had raced a few Sport 600 classes the previous year no one was sure who would take the Championship title. Callan had a very consistent season landing on top of box at almost every race and this consistency is what paid of giving him the Sport 600-2 Championship Titles and 2nd place in Sport 600-1. This year Callan, 17, steps up to the Pro-Lite class.
OSM: You’ve been working hard over the last few seasons, how did winning the Sport 600 - 2 Championship last season feel?
OSM: We hear you’ve joined with a new team, can you tell us about that?
Cale Callan: Over the last few seasons I have been working to achieve my goals that I had set for myself. Winning the Championship for the Sport 600-2 Championship in my first year felt really good. Going into the season I was confident in myself, but I know my competitors had been training hard over the off season, so I just took every race one at a time and didn’t think about the Championship.
Callan: Yes, I joined a new team with OTSFF, MPA, Rockstar/Polaris. I am going to be running a new sled this year with a manufacturer that is new to me. It will be different, but I am looking forward to the upcoming season. It is exciting to have Iain Hayden as my mentor.
OSM: What was your goal going into last season?
Callan: I feel as though the change will be a little scary because I have been on Arctic Cat since I first got on 600’s in Junior 1. It will be a different change, but I am hoping to get a lot of practice time in before our season starts. We will make sure the sled and I are in the best condition to ride both mechanically and physically.
Callan: I think my goal was the same as every other rider, we go into the season wanting to win and every rider wants to come out on top of the box. My main goal was to get on the podium and I am glad we were able to come out on top.
48
OSM: What are your thoughts on switching from Arctic Cat to Polaris?
OSM: Are you excited to be working with Iain Hayden through his new role as the Polaris liaison and mentor? Callan: Yes, working with Iain is going to be amazing. I have been at Motopark and have seen how he runs things. I am looking forward to having him as my mentor and riding with him will be exciting. I have always wanted to ride with the Pro riders and now I get to work with the best in Canada.
OSM: How does it feel jumping up to the Pro-Lite class this year? Callan: Last year I raced a few of the Pro-Lite races and had some good finishes. I am feeling confident going into the season. I am looking forward to riding with everyone in that class. It is a new level of riding and a new caliber.
OSM: Your Mom, Dad and two Sisters have been a constant presence at the snowcross races for many years. Are your sisters going to be racing this year? Callan: Yes, both my sisters are racing this year. Alexxa who has been racing for many years will continue to race on a limited schedule as she is attending university full time. Nikella is jumping up into the Junior Girls class and is excited to chase down her sisters’ championships. They will both continue to ride on their Arctic Cats.
OSM: What have you been up to over the summer months? Callan: I have been riding motocross to keep myself in shape. I also swim a lot. Over the summer, I worked as a Lifeguard at the Ontario Camp for the Deaf in Parry Sound.
OSM: Goals for 2017? Callan: I think my goal going into the season is the same as every other rider. I think we all have that kill in our blood, we all want to win. My main goal is to win, but I need to take the races one at a time and be consistent.
OSM: Anyone you want to thank? Callan: I need to first thank my parents for supporting my dreams over the years. There are many times over the years that I am sure they wanted to quit but have stuck it out with me. I also need to thank Arctic Cat for supporting me over the years with racing. They have always built a great sled. I also need to really thank Andre Laurin and Iain Hayden for this amazing opportunity to race the new Polaris for OTSFF, MPA and Rockstar. Bell Helmets, Klim Gear, Studboy, Mystic Lubricants and Dayco are supporting us this year also, so big thanks to them. This year should be a fun year and I am super excited to get out riding the new Polaris.

STEPHANIE WILLIS A Dream Come True Stephanie Willis has been racing snowcross for the past 11 years. Moving up through the ranks from Junior Girls to Sport 600 her dream has always been to race for the Ski-Doo X Team and win her very own Pro Women’s Championship title. After 3 years of competing in the Pro Am Women’s class of the CSRA Willis’s dream finally came true. The 2016 season was filled with tough competition but Willis was never deterred and took home 1st place at almost every event. Her years of hard work, determination and training finally paid off.
OSM: You took home the Pro Am Women’s Championship this year, how did you feel after this accomplishment? Stephanie Willis: Ever since I started out racing I told myself that I was going to be Pro-Women’s Champion one day and be on the SkiDoo X-Team. When I finished the last race knowing I locked in the Championship and also my first year on the Ski-Doo X-Team it truly felt like I accomplished my dream. It took blood, sweat and tears, literally, but when I received the Championship it was all worth it and more, I was in complete shock that the day I dreamt of was actually happening.
OSM: What were your goals heading into last season? Willis: My goals heading into last season was to get crowned Pro-Women Champ and place top 10 in Sport 600 with the guys. I accomplished these goals by getting the Championship and placed 7th overall in the Sport 600 class. Another mini-goal for me was not to have any hospital trips and that was successful.
50
OSM: What are your expectations for this season? Willis: For this upcoming season, my goal is to have back-to-back Championships in the Pro-Women class and place Top 5 in Sport 600. On top of that I really want to focus on my riding style, make adjustments and improve.
OSM: What have you been doing to prepare for this coming season? Willis: I currently have three jobs, Heavy Equipment Operator, as well as two part-time jobs. One as a cashier and the other at Sport Chek helping people of all ages gear up for hockey, skiing and snowboarding etc. After work I go to the gym to keep active. Mentally I prepare myself watching the Pros and watch videos of my past races seeing where I can improve and step it up. Always trying to get more sponsors on board, so I can focus more on my fitness and strategies to be top notch.
OSM: You’ve got a new Ski-Doo RS finally, how excited are you to be on a brand new sled? Willis: I’m beyond grateful and stoked that I get to race a brand new sled. Setting it up is somewhat a process, but I look at it in a good way as I’m learning how to fix my machine and have an overall outlook on racing besides just being a racer.
OSM: Out of all the places the CSRA regularly races, which place is your favourite? Willis: When CSRA has a race in Sudbury, that is one of my favorite races because I’m currently based out of Sudbury (originally from Michigan) and it gives me a break from travelling. Because it is so close, if they want, my family and friends can actually see me race and hang out in the pits.
OSM: With different types of track conditions at almost every event what type do you perform the best on and why? Willis: I find myself performing better on a long track, whether it be at a Ski resort or not. I just love being out there in general but the longer it is the better the race. Short tracks are too short of a race to where one little mistake can happen and throw your entire day off.
OSM: Who do you want to thank for helping you? Willis: First and foremost I like to thank my dad for always helping me and supporting me throughout my racing career, he’s my mechanic, manager, driver and #1 fan! Without him I’d never have made it this far. Also I like to thank my family and friends for helping me push myself to become better than I was before. Along my journey to where I’m at now I have the privilege in representing Ski-Doo X-Team, Team Woody’s, Mobius Knee Braces, Leatt Protection, Amsoil, C&A Pro Ski’s, Backcountry Motorsports Media, Northshore Sports & Auto, MBA Audio & Custom.
