Why does one apply to be a member of the THS board? A question usually asked during election times but also by board members when faced with a particularly daunting task. Before trying to answer this question, let me introduce us. We are the board of THS, also known as the union board and therefore responsible for the student union at kTH. When asked if we would like to write something for the next issue of Osqledaren the answer was yes. Of course we want to take this opportunity to share our thoughts with you.
THS is a remarkable organization. We are built by our members and consist of students, chapters, associations and employees. A fact that makes our work as the board challenging but also interesting. Trying to work with all parts of the organization is a large portion of what we do as the board. This might take the form of meetings and discussions but it also involves thinking about what we can do. I know that everyone who wants to be a part of the board is driven by the will to create change and to influence THS. This is what makes it so rewarding to work together. What is important to remember is that the direction of THS does not only depend on the board. It depends on the work and effort put down by the chapters and associations as well. All working to give you the best possible experience of being a student. Our purpose is clear and we are all a part of it. Imagine what we can do if we work together.
One ever present problem for the board is the same facing all students. How do you combine your coursework with the rest of your life? Being a part of the board is not only board meetings and decisions. It is also the feeling of trying to find the hours you need to prepare for the exam or the presentation. A feeling I am sure all of you recognize. Yet, every year many of us students choose to sign up to be a part of the reception, to be a part of an association or, in our case, be a part of the union board. You can learn so much during your time as a student. You just have to take the opportunities.
Summer is coming and with that the year as a board is coming to an end. Returning to the question of why one would apply to be a part of the board. To be fair, a possible answer is that you are easily persuaded. A second answer is the opportunity it brings to influence the future of the organization. However, all of us don’t have to be a part of the board to influence THS. The opportunities are there. Imagine what we can do if we take them.
