READY TO LEAD

From the Dean Dear Colleagues: We began the fund-raising efforts for our expansion of Postle Hall a little more than two years ago. Along the way, we have shared our plans for the new building with people across Ohio and around the country, and we have asked for contributions to our Building on Strong Foundations campaign. To date, 451 of our 10,000-plus alumni have given to the campaign to help us reach our $25 million goal. There are many reasons why our alumni have made gifts to this campaign. Near the top of the list is their desire to express gratitude for all that dentistry has given them – an opportunity to care for others, to be a leader in their community, to provide for their families, and to enjoy all that life has to offer. Other contributors have told us they gave to our new facility project because they realized Postle Hall is showing its age and that it cannot be retrofitted with the technological and patient care advances that our profession now has available. And some say they gave because they had heard about or had seen the new facilities other dental schools are able to offer their students. There are also some alumni who say they just want to be part of this historic moment. They know this is a once-in-our-lifetime opportunity, and they want to be involved in all that comes with such an unprecedented time in the long history of our college. Worthy of special mention are the alumni who have made gifts in remembrance of a loved one who graduated from our college. These are sons or daughters recognizing their parents or honoring other family members who inspired them to follow in their footsteps. How rewarding it is to discover what motivates our alumni to support our new building campaign. Although each has their own reason for giving, they all realize how important it is to help with this unprecedented opportunity to benefit our college’s patients, students, staff, and faculty, while also advancing the profession and making our college a leader in dental education. To those of you who have already made a contribution to our campaign, we thank you. And to those of you who have yet to support our fund-raising efforts, I encourage you to give as generously as you can to help our college reach its goal. If you would like to join those who have already given, we have enclosed an envelope for your convenience. You may also call our Office of Development at 614-292-9307 to learn about ways to give, or visit our website at dentistry.osu.edu and click on the image of our new facility under the headline, “Building on Strong Foundations.” There are numerous giving options, naming opportunities, and payment plans. We truly need you to take this step now and be a part of our future! Sincerely!

OHIO Project and Dental Student Recognized with University Engagement Awards 2

Honoring a Family's Connection to the Profession David Smeltzer, DDS ’95, wouldn’t be the successful oral surgeon he is today if not for his older sister, Debbie York, DDS ’00. While working on his undergraduate degree in biology at Bowling Green State University, he lived with Debbie, who was a dental hygienist at the time. After his sister introduced him to some of the dentists she worked for, Dr. Smeltzer began his path to dental school at Ohio State. “I was searching for something that I felt I was good at. I’d been in construction and had pretty good hand skills, so the combination of that with “It just keeps my biology background got me thinking going back to how much about dentistry,” Dr. Smeltzer said. dentistry has done for you and your family. This is a way we can continue to promote excellence in the field we’ve chosen.”

- David Smeltzer, ’95 DDS, and Debbie York, ’00 DDS

Dr. Smeltzer went on to train as an oral surgeon for four years after earning his dental degree. Today, he owns an oral and facial surgery for adults and children practice in Columbus. Amazingly, with her employer’s encouragement, Dr. Smeltzer’s sister decided to follow her younger brother’s trajectory. She too earned her dental degree from Ohio State and, today, Dr. York practices at Columbus’s Community Dental. “She’s six years older than me, but everybody thinks she’s my younger sister because she went to dental school after me,” Dr. Smeltzer said with a laugh.

To honor the college that gave him his start—as well as his family’s strong connection to the profession—Dr. Smeltzer recently made a $100,000 contribution to the Postle Hall expansion project. It’s as much a nod to his big sister’s impact on his life as it is a major gift to help transform the aging facility. “I’m at the college a good amount, and I see the age of everything and how things haven’t been updated since I was in school,” said Dr. Smeltzer, who has stayed connected to the college by teaching oral surgery residents for the past two decades. “The P.I.T.S. in the basement was old back when I was there, and that was 25 years ago. Seeing that, I got a little nostalgic and felt like this was something I wanted to do.” Raised to value giving back—his father was a minister and mother a university employee—Dr. Smeltzer and his wife, Dee, who works in the optometry field, volunteer their time with the Physicians Care Clinic in downtown Columbus. The Smeltzer family gift to the college is right in line with their values. “I wanted this gift to be about the family,” Dr. Smeltzer said. “Dentistry has given us so many opportunities. When I was in college, I spent the summers digging ditches. Now, my children are traveling the world and that’s all because of dentistry.” He encourages other alumni who have benefitted from their dental degrees to give to the Postle Hall Fund, as well. “It just keeps going back to how much dentistry has done for you and your family. This is a way we can continue to promote excellence in the field we’ve chosen.” Upgrading the college’s facilities matters, he points out. “It’s no different than bringing top quality athletes to the university. Without top facilities, they’re not going to come here. And that’s the same with top quality dental students and faculty.” ■ 3

MAKING A MARK

Signatures of students, staff, and faculty.

In late April, 455 students, staff, and faculty became a part of history when they signed their names on a construction beam that will be included in the framework of the college’s new building. The beam signing served as an exciting precursor to a major milestone in the Postle Hall construction project—the framing of the new structure! To learn more about the Phase I Postle Hall Replacement project, please visit go.osu.edu/strong-foundations. Top photo (from left): Dean Patrick Lloyd; James "Jimmy" Schooley, ’19 DDS, President, Student Government Association; Fonda Robinson, DMD, Associate Dean, Clinic Administration and Patient Care; and Craig Ramsey, Director of Building Services, were the first to sign the beam. CONVOCATION On Friday, May 3, family members, faculty, students, and staff gathered at Mershon Auditorium to honor the Doctor of Dental Surgery and Dental Hygiene Classes of 2019 during Convocation. Dean Patrick Lloyd presided over the ceremony and was joined on stage by special guests Shannon Sweeney, President-elect of the Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association; Barbara Hickey, President of the Ohio Dental Assistants’ Association; Michael Halasz, ‘91 DDS, President of the Ohio Dental Association; Patricia Guttman, DDS, President of the Ohio State Dental Board; and Rebecca Henderson, ’01 BSDH, ’06 MS, President of the Dental Alumni Society. Dean Lloyd began the ceremony by encouraging graduates to make a difference. “Get involved, lead the way, and take responsibility – in our profession and in your communities,” he said. “People will look to you for advice for all sorts of issues – be there, help when you can, and as you’ve done here, make a difference.” Representing alumni, Rebecca Henderson challenged the graduates to share their talents. “Don’t let graduation be the end of something, but the beginning of something else. I challenge each of you to identify and pursue ways in which you can use or develop the transferrable leadership skills you learned at Postle Hall.” Student Government Association President and graduating dental student James “Jimmy” Schooley, '19 DDS, delivered a special message to his classmates. “We may have doubts, but if we remember the lessons we have learned—to be good dentists and hygienists, and more importantly, good people—we cannot fail, especially when we have each other to lean on.” ■ 5

INSIGHTS FROM GRADUATING STUDENTS By Susannah Turner, MS, Director of Student Affairs

On Friday, May 3, the College of Dentistry held its annual Convocation ceremony to celebrate the Dental and Dental Hygiene Classes of 2019. Leading up to this momentous event are two or four years of focused study, practice, patient management, and a great deal of personal growth and development. As I listened to the graduation speeches, filled with stories of loyalty, hard work, support, and encouragement, I also heard stories of hard times due to personal challenges, like a death of a loved one; or an illness; or academic stress, like failing a course or struggling to find the “right” patient for a board exam. Oftentimes, our students can get so caught up in the stress and anxiety that is inherent in dental school that they forget about the equally important moments of great learning or encouragement that are also part of the process. With that in mind, the Office of Student Affairs, as part of the check-out process for the dental students, asked our soon-to-be graduates to reflect on their experience; to pause amidst the chaos of graduation, moving homes, starting a new job, and entering the “real world” and take a moment to thank someone—whether it be a member of faculty or staff, or an office—for making a positive impact on their success in dental school. This was an opportunity to step back and consider the good things. Each student was given a postcard on which they were prompted to consider who or what positively influenced or impacted their growth and development. The outcome has been an astounding reminder of what great faculty and staff our college has, how the “little things” make a difference, and how kindness and a belief in a student’s ability to be successful go a long way. By and large the students expressed gratitude for the faculty in the college. They told stories of faculty who took the time to share their expertise and help them learn.

9

They said things like, the faculty “pushed students to achieve while promoting critical thinking and problem solving” or the faculty were “very invested in [our] learning and took the time to make sure [we] knew the WHY and not just the WHAT.” These are just two examples of how our graduating students appreciate the way in which our faculty taught them the art and science of dentistry. Secondly, our students noticed the little things that can get lost among the more visible components of school, like coursework, exams, and patient concerns. They appreciated that Charlie, one of our custodians, is a “genuine, sweet guy who was a pleasure to see every day.” They noticed that their clinic desk staff positively impacted their experience by being “willing to help even when it made more work” for them or that they “helped countless times through clinic and were always there to provide motivation and a smile.” They appreciated the dispensing staff who were “helpful and kind and willing to go the extra mile.” And they remain grateful for moments of friendship, like when a faculty member, seeing a student in the ever-present gray scrubs standing at a bus stop and knowing said student would be late for class, stopped and offered him a ride. Lastly, the Class of 2019 appreciated that faculty and staff believe in them and treat them with respect. They agreed that will help them become better dentists or dental hygienists. While there were challenges to learning how to interact with patients and applying their pre-clinical lab experiences in the clinical setting, the graduating classes appreciated how the faculty not only took the time to allow them to ask questions and think for themselves but also taught them “that a little kindness goes a long way and a lot of kindness changes lives.” The faculty pushed them to do things they didn’t think they were able to do. Most importantly, though, the faculty showed them “how to be better humans”. ■

Dr. Brian Foster:

Improving Lives Through Research Why are you passionate about research? In a broad sense, you realize there are these questions about the world and how things work— in my case about biology and the development of teeth—and there are these fundamental questions that haven’t been answered. It’s really exciting to think about what experiments I can do, what new models I can develop and what new technologies I can use to answer those questions.

You’ve won Paper of the Year Awards for both basic and clinical science. Why is it important to you to explore both of these areas?

“I’m trying to work on projects that will someday help us to prevent diseases and have a real clinical impact.”

- Dr. Brian Foster

Probably 90 percent or more of what I do is basic science—growing cells in the lab, using mouse models which are a few steps removed from human biology—so when I have a chance to do something with clinical science, I really enjoy it. When I think about my research in the big picture, I’m trying to work on projects that will someday help us to prevent diseases and have a real clinical impact.

Tell us about your research on hypophosphatasia (HPP). What is HPP and what kinds of problems does it cause? HPP is an inherited disease that causes a defective mineralization of the bones, which can be lethal, especially in infants. The most common dental problem it causes is premature tooth loss due to absence or reduction of cementum on the tooth root, causing a poor attachment of the tooth to the surrounding periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. The most recent estimate is that one in 6,000 people have mild or moderate HPP.

15

Brian Foster, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Division of Biosciences, has been at the College of Dentistry just four years, but he has already won two major research awards from the college: Paper of the Year in the basic science category in 2018 and Paper of the Year in the clinical science category in 2019. We recently caught up with Dr. Foster to learn about his award-winning work—and his ongoing quest to improve people’s lives through research.

One of your award-winning papers is about the new mouse model you developed for HPP research. How did your discovery help advance the study of this disease? There was a model used for many years that really only captured the most severe type of HPP. It was very helpful—there have been more than 50 papers on it by now—but what we’ve realized is with this model, the mice couldn’t live past more than two to three weeks. We were imagining how we can help HPP patients who are 10 or 20 years old, and this mouse model was not surviving long enough to look at how HPP affects teeth at equivalent ages. We also knew a therapy was being developed to replace the defective enzyme in HPP with one that gets that enzyme level up and functioning to improve patients’ bones. In order to provide insights into HPP-associated dental problems and the ability of therapy to reverse and reduce these problems, we helped develop a new mouse model that allows mice to live longer with a less severe form of HPP.

Your other award-winning paper is about generalized arterial calcification in infancy (GACI), which impacts infants. Tell us about that and the dangers it poses. GACI is caused by mutations in the ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1) gene that encodes a protein of the same name, and it almost always strikes in infancy immediately after birth. In a lot of ways, GACI is the opposite of HPP. In HPP, the molecule pyrophosphate accumulates and blocks proper bone and tooth mineralization—but in GACI it’s the opposite problem, with inappropriate calcification in soft tissue like blood vessels that causes severe hypertension and possible blood vessel ruptures. It’s a very rare disease, with only about 200 cases diagnosed to date.

And what did your research find? We found in both a mouse model of GACI and in the very first study of dental manifestations of GACI in humans that tooth root cementum becomes dramatically thicker—about four times more than normal. This is interesting because it confirms that cementum formation is extremely sensitive to pyrophosphate levels (either increased in HPP or decreased in GACI), suggesting that modulating pyrophosphate levels is a central and fundamental mechanism directing the amount of cementum formation, and this has probably been evolutionarily honed over many millions of years since it is a shared mechanism between humans and mice.

What’s it like working with students on research projects? I have two PhD students in my lab right now, various dental and dental hygiene students and some residents specializing in different areas of dentistry. I remember when I was a student, I had no clue how to write a paper or what experiments to do. Part of the job of a researcher is training the next generation, mentoring them and showing them the right way to do things—not just experiments, but also ethically. ■ college news 16

STAFF SPOTLIGHT Getting to Know Craig Ramsey,

Director of Building Services An alumnus of The Ohio State University, Craig Ramsey is the first college graduate in his family. Being Director of Building Services allows me to use my collected skill set to provide the best environment possible for our patients, students, staff, and faculty.

Q) What do you like best about your job? A) The people. I am fortunate to work with a wonderful, diverse group of people every day at the College of Dentistry. The challenge of providing for the needs of all of the different groups keeps me hopping and my mind engaged.

Q) What are the challenges? A) I see every situation as an opportunity to make things a little bit better. There are plenty of opportunities with an aging building and budget constraints to find creative solutions for the college.

Q) What is your role as it relates to the new building? A) I am excited to be able to work on the new building project as an owner’s representative. I am involved in planning, construction, and occupancy of the new facility. I am looking forward to helping the college continue to provide a high quality of care while educating a highly diverse group of oral health professionals.

Q) Anything else you’d like to share? A) I am passionate about our focus on treating and educating underserved populations.

It’s important that I work in an environment where I can support professionals that are bridging the gaps between levels of socioeconomic status and oral health care.

Award-winning Engagement OHIO Project and Dental Student Recognized with University Engagement Awards The College of Dentistry’s Oral Health Improvement through Outreach (OHIO) Project was recognized with The Ohio State University’s Distinguished Service-Learning Award at the university’s 7th annual Engagement Recognition Awards ceremony on May 2 at The Ohio Union. Recognized by the university’s Offices of Outreach and Engagement, Service-Learning, Student Life, and International Affairs, the project was honored for its demonstrated outstanding achievement in service-learning, with a longterm record of impact and achievement.

Dean Patrick Lloyd (left) accepted an award for the OHIO Project from Ola Ahlquist. PhD, Associate Vice Provost of the Office of Academic Enrichment.

As described by Ola Ahlqvist, PhD, Associate Vice Provost of the Office of Academic Enrichment, service learning is when instructors ensure knowledge is translated into action by providing students with an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a real-life setting where there is a true need in the community. “The College of Dentistry has succeeded in building a robust, long-term outreach program that is a true benefit in our communities,” Dr. Ahlqvist said. “The OHIO Project is a win-win-win situation. It’s a win for the students because they get an enhanced clinical education, exposing them to populations they might not necessarily find in other areas of their communication. It’s a win for the partner also. And the patients obviously win by having more access to care.” College of Dentistry student Carrie Chen was recognized for her exceptional commitment to service with the Professional Student Award for Excellence in Community Service. “Community service is central to Carrie’s character,” Javaune Adams-Gaston, PhD, Senior Vice President for Student Life, said. “Her primary motivation to pursue a career in dentistry is to gain skills to help immigrant families. She has pursued this goal through a variety of service opportunities, most notably as co-director of Project Refugee Smiles,” a volunteer organization that provides dental care to refugees. ■

Dear Dental Alumni, Our alumni base consists of well over 10,000 graduates of the College of Dentistry spanning more than 100 years of graduations. I am happy to share that in May, the Dental Alumni Society grew by 93! 64% of our newest alumni – the 2019 College of Dentistry graduates – signed up to join us in our mission of supporting current students, faculty, staff, and the rest of our alumni base. At their Convocation ceremony, I encouraged them to lend their well-honed talents and skills to efforts beyond what their clinical training prepared them to do. I asked them to invite us into their professional network for mentorship, to socialize and eventually to continue their learning at our CE events. On this topic, I thought I would share some stats about our current Dental Alumni Society membership:

»

D E N TA L ALUMNI SOCIETY President’s Letter

Less than 20% of our total alumni are Life members (those committed to being a member for a lifetime).

»

Annual new memberships (those committed to being a member for one year) have ranged from 56 to 218 members in the past 5 years.

»

Five new Life members, and 115 Annual members have joined thus far in 2019.

Many times when I talk to alumni and ask if they are members of the Dental Alumni Society, they are not sure or assume they certainly joined “at some point”. I encourage you to take the time to check on your membership status to affirm your commitment and support of the society. You can email dentalalumni@osu.edu to find out. As with any organization, there is strength in numbers – more people to help the society not only fulfill the mission, but to help it flourish and grow. Our society budget structure is funded by membership and the money goes directly to sustaining the society and expanding the activities we support – scholarships, student programming, alumni events, networking, etc. You can secure your annual membership for $25 or a life membership with a one-time payment of $400. Visit www.osudas.com to join if you decide to make this commitment. New this year, all life members will receive a signed certificate from the Dental Alumni Society to proudly display in your home or office as a thank you for your commitment and support of the society. All 2,201 current life members will receive this in the coming weeks, as well as all new life members going forward. I look forward to seeing you in Columbus for Homecoming weekend, October 4th & 5th. I invite each of you to join us at the ODA alumni reception for our annual society meeting and fellowship on Friday, and the Homecoming tailgate at the Ohio Union on Saturday. More information on Homecoming weekend will be shared via mail, email and on the college website. In preparation, you can shop for your Dental Alumni Society clothing items at our online Dental Alumni Society Apparel Pop-Up Shop, which will be open July 18th - August 1st. Email and social media will communicate the active web link for ordering in the weeks leading up to the opening.

» Implant Dentistry in a Digital World » Pain and Anxiety Management The 2019 Post College Assembly Homecoming CE will be held Friday, October 4 at the Downtown Hilton, during Ohio Dental Association (ODA) Annual Session, making it convenient to take part in both great events! The 2019 ODA Annual Session has been moved to the first weekend in October, which happens to fall during Ohio State’s Homecoming Weekend. While this move was due to circumstances beyond the ODA's control, we are happy to announce that the 2019 Post College Assembly Homecoming CE will be held in conjunction with the ODA Annual Session at the Downtown Hilton on Friday, October 4, 2019. “Rather than hold competing events, we worked with the ODA leadership and created an opportunity to better serve the dental profession,” said Don Gray, Director of Continuing Dental Education at the College of Dentistry. “We’ve always had a great relationship with the ODA and are thankful for their collaboration in developing a mutually beneficial solution.” Attendees can attend a half-day or full-day of PCA on Friday, along with the other ODA CE courses. “We feel like this provides a great weekend of CE and homecoming activities,” Mr. Gray said. ■

Register for one or both presentations FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2019 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (3 CE credits) Implant Dentistry in a Digital World (Panel discussion)

Bryant Cornelius, DDS, MBA, MPH; Gregory Ness, DDS

The incorporation of digital technologies into implant treatment of partial and completely edentulous patients is becoming the norm. This session will discuss the multiple areas through the planning, surgical, and restorative phases of implant therapy in which digital technologies may aid in the patient’s treatment. The presentation aims to create a chance to discuss the challenges and debated issues related to digital implant dentistry in today’s practice. The interdisciplinary panel includes faculty from the Divisions of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry, Periodontics, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Fees: Dentist: Half-Day Fee $90 / Full-Day Fee $175 Hygienist, Assistant, Office: Half-Day Fee $71 / Full-Day Fee $135 31

As more patients become familiar with and inquire about sedation in the dental office, it is important that providers understand the risks and benefits of providing this valuable service. Proper training, proper equipment and proper patient selection are required to ensure a safe and predictable outcome. The second half of this presentation will cover the pharmacologic background on opioids and related pain medicines, the current state of regulation and compliance requirements, and provide an algorithm for the responsible, evidence-based management of postoperative pain in the dental surgery patient.

There is no luncheon, but we hope you will attend the Alumni Reception on Friday, October 4, 2019 from 5:00-7:00pm at the Hilton. For more information and online registration, please visit go.osu.edu/PCA2019

Fourth-year Dental Students Win Business Plan Competition Fourth-year dental students Andrew Kitzmiller, Katie Cheffins, and Jeremy Altdorfer won first, second, and third place respectively in a business plan competition this spring. The competition was hosted by Practice Management course instructor James Cottle, ’81 DDS, assistant professor, Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry. All third-year dental students in Dr. Cottle’s Practice Management course are required to submit a business plan at the end of spring semester as an individual project. When they enter their fourth year, the students have an additional opportunity to greatly expand their business plan during an optional competition. ■ “The business plan competition offers an elective educational opportunity for students to work one-on-one with leaders in the dental business community to improve their business plan,” Dr. Cottle said. Students meet with corporate sponsors, judges, and other competitors throughout the competition to do a “deep dive” into the business plan process. When the competition is over, they have a plan worthy of submission to a bank for a loan. This year’s winners earned cash awards donated by sponsors First Merchants Bank, Patterson Dental Company, and Midmark Corporation. Faculty judges included Henry Fischbach, ’86 DDS, and Mike Pappas, '14 DDS, '14 MBA. ■
