Why Conscious Curiosity Is The Soft Skill Separating Good Recruiting, From Great Recruiting
How a self-motivated desire to learn and ask questions drastically improves recruiting and hiring
It’s amazing how connecting dots makes the work of HR and recruiting teams so much easier. Knowing what the business does, how it makes money, and what’s happening in your industry is important. So is knowing what hiring managers are looking for – and how to interact with the right candidates. And yet, many are not doing these things.
The best HR pros have learned that the only way to be successful is to be consciously curious-- meaning they are self-motivated to learn more deeply about how their and other businesses work and thrive.
Corporate training cannot fill a gap when employees are not curious – it may result in you retaining even less. If you’re not curious, it ultimately means you’re operating at a status quo. Forcing yourself through training
that you find boring or ignoring the opportunity to gain more insight to improve your role as a consultative HR or talent acquisition professional is a lost opportunity. It doesn’t have to be so! Being curious on your own is important because it helps you:
✓ Gain credibility
✓ Improve your ability to assess candidates
✓ Create a better candidate experience by better explaining the company’s strategy and how the role adds value
✓ Become an expert in the commercial language of your organization and your industry
✓ Build and manage relationships with all key stakeholders: hiring managers, candidates, employees, and leaders.
the answers to inform your next few steps. This can be through industry newsletters or podcasts, following influencers on social media, or even online courses. The point is to go beyond where you normally would in your quest for information, even if it’s hard and you feel that you have an answer – keep digging!
Share your intention and take advantage of the discussion by asking questions. When you tell people you’re interested and want to learn, they’re often more willing to share with you. Build on answers they give and ask for their personal perspective on a matter. We will all invest more time when people show active listening, feel that their perspectives are valued, and the person is trying to understand what they are sharing.
The “process” of recruiting isn’t hard -- but it does take capabilities and competencies that are rarely taught. Setting and managing expectations tops the list, but what differentiates good from great recruiters is the skill of conscious curiosity, and it requires focus. Corporate workplaces haven’t evolved to teach this yet – training rarely leaves us feeling more informed or energized. Conscious curiosity is also not a step you can build into best practice recruiting processes. Nobody will tell you to be more curious nor can it be measured, so how might you approach working your curiosity muscle.
Five Key Tips to Practice Conscious Curiosity
Note that there is work in building this skill. These tips may give you some extra help developing this new cerebral muscle.
Do your own research about the business or industry and actually use
Ask your questions in a way that demonstrates that you care about their answers and demonstrate some comprehension on your end. Repeat the response back to them in your own words and ask if you still have the information correct. Reply to them with your thoughts on why you find what they are saying interesting or ask clarifying questions about a particular aspect of the discussion. Most important –don’t forget to thank them for sharing with you.
Admit you are not the expert and ask if there is anything else you should have asked to gain more knowledge of a particular area. Invite them to share info with you, even if you don’t ask. There is an opportunity to further connect with others when you admit you don’t know something and want their help to learn. Vulnerability is a strength when connecting with others and can often deepen the conversation to a more personal level which gives you new insights but is also a very human way to connect and build relationships.
Show you care! Don’t forget human interaction and how it feels when people are interested in you as a person, what you care about, how you
are doing, and what’s new in your world. As you practice curiosity, you will seem like a more caring person as well. Caring people attract positive energy and make it easier to ask more questions or have people trust you with more information. Recruiting is all about relationships and they are extremely hard to build when people can sense you don’t care and are not interested in what they have to say.
At its most tactical application, conscious curiosity can help you better understand roles in more business units faster which can make you more versatile. This can also lead to improving your ability to screen candidates and ask more probing questions to hiring managers to hit the mark on
Jeremy Eskenazi, SHRM-SCP
what they are looking for the first time.
Take the opportunity to be a cut above and turn on the conscious curiosity engine now. Understand how the company makes money, have chats with different departments and probe deeper. Remember, being curious means listening twice as much as you speak. Recruiters are often chatty to begin with, so this is your reminder to listen to show you’re interested in them! Asking insightful questions beyond where you are today will help shape your own brand as a top recruiter capable of bringing in top talent because you truly understand, and you care!

Tips for Protecting The Hair While Using Heating Devices
A woman’s treasure is her “crowning glory” and we want to look our very best at all times. Most of us have at least one heating device: flat iron, curling iron, straightening comb, etc. These devices can lead to damage to the hair if we are not careful.
1. Use a heat protectant. You should always apply a heat protectant spray before using any heating devices on the hair. This protects the hair from heat damage.
2. Make sure the hair is completely dry before using a heating tool. The hair should be completely dry before using a heating tool. This will prevent singeing of the hair.
3. Use the correct temperature setting for your hair. If you have fine hair, do not use the highest setting. For medium to coarse hair, you can use a hotter setting but be careful not to leave it on the hair too long or longer than ten seconds.
SHORT, MEDIUM OR LONG HAIR, IT DOESN'T MATTER.
Twist It Up 4.0 has a solution or all hair lengths. It Is the NLY comb on the market ith Interchangeable Inserts to twist all hair lengths.

4. While blow drying the hair, move around the head to different sections as you dry it. Be careful of applying too much heat in one section. There is a risk of burning the hair.
5.
Wear a satin bonnet when you go to bed and/or sleep on a satin pillowcase. The satin will keep the hair from frizzing and wearing the bonnet to bed helps to maintain the hairstyle.
6.
Use a hair mask or deep conditioning treatment. A moisturizing hair mask or deep conditioning treatment will strengthen the hair and give it the moisture it needs to keep the hair healthy, shiny and manageable.
7. Invest in high-quality hair tools. You get what you pay for so invest in quality hair tools for your hair. Poor quality heat styling tools can cause more damage than highquality tools
8.
Do not use heat every day. Try to reduce the frequency of using heat on the hair. You can wrap the hair or use rollers instead.
9. Use a hydrating oil. After using a heating device and styling of the hair, use a hydrating hair oil or oil sheen on the hair. It helps to keep the hair strong, shiny, and protects the ends of the hair from splitting.

Focus on the Customer & Employee Experience to Transform Your Business
As busy leaders and business owners, you are faced with a seemingly endless list of things to do to keep your business operating and an everincreasing list of ideas on how to improve your business. However, you are encouraged to throw out the hundred plus to-do items and ideas; instead, focus on the experience you deliver and start with these three fundamental steps.
The three fundamental steps are:
1 - Define the Promise;
2 - Measure the Gap(s); and
3 - Share the Stories
But before unpacking the steps to improving the experience to transform your business, let’s clarify a couple of important elements.
Firstly, the term experience, in this context means the customer experiences, the employee experiences, the experiences that you
promise, and ultimately, the ones you deliver. You may even make experience promises about your brand and products but for now, focus on Customer and Employee experiences. Also, as you will quickly understand, the singular experience, the transaction, is just as important as the plural, collective experiences.
Each of these steps applies to customers and employees equally. If you don’t know where to start, start with your employees’ experiences. Investing in improving your employees’ experience will undoubtedly result in increased productivity and improved customer experiences.
Step 1 Define the Promise
Ok, step 1 actually comes in 2 parts and starts with defining what you mean by the words customer/employee experience. Defining what you mean by the term(s) and ensuring every Team Member understands it, is crucial. Part 2 of step 1 is to define what you promise to deliver for your customers/employees.
Every day people check in to 2-star hotels, and fly low-cost airlines, while at the same time people are checking-in to 5-star hotels and flying first class. In both instances, there are companies that make a profit and those that don’t; the difference is clear. Some companies compete on price, and others, who win, win by delivering consistently on the experience that their ideal customers are drawn to and are willing to pay for.
So don’t be afraid of defining your promise and sharing it broadly, there are customers who will choose your company, and your promise over your competitors if you deliver on your promise consistently.
But beyond prospects and customers being drawn to your promise, the superpower of defining your promise is that every Team Member will understand that above all else their priority is to deliver on the promise.
Step 2 Measure the Gap(s)
So you’ve defined what you promise to deliver to your customers; there may be multiple promises, and now is the time to measure the gap between the promise(s) and the reality. To get started, just measure the gap between one of your promises. Your main promise.
However, if you aren’t delivering on your main promise, then your mission is to focus on closing the gap, every day being 1% closer to delivering on your promise.
If you are wondering where to start to measure, it is as simple as asking your customer/employee “Did we deliver on (insert your promise)?”. Then follow up by asking what was the impact of us delivering/not delivering as expected?
Step 3 Share the Stories
Companies worldwide send out surveys, and you probably will too, as you measure the gap. But don’t be one of those companies that send out surveys and then keep all the data locked up.
The power of step 3, Share the Stories, is in sharing with your team and celebrating the impact of delivering on your promise. The celebration of delivering on your promise reinforces what great looks like and the behaviors required to achieve success.
However, it is also important to share, just as broadly, the stories and the impact on customers when you fail to deliver on your promise. This not only reinforces the value of delivering on the promise, it provides a clear coaching point. An opportunity to identify, and fix, what processes, systems or tasks create the break in delivering on your promise.
For example, if you promise to deliver your product within 24 hours, start measuring how often you actually deliver within 24 hours. If you 100% of the time deliver within the promise, then start measuring the gap of the next promise.

Leadership: The Corporate Talent Acquisition Leader’s
by Jeremy M. Eskenazi
In this frank, realistic, and forward-thinking field guide, readers will learn: Organizational Talent Acquisition leadership does not happen in a vacuum and relationships are key; regardless of budget, resources, or industry, there are always effective Corporate Staffing strategy solutions available; Corporate Talent Acquisition leadership is an active process that must be focused; leading and managing Corporate Talent Acquisition is a distinct profession. Today, the position of recruiting leader has become significantly more complicated due to company globalization, and rather than administrators, corporations now look to employ true talent acquisition strategists who can drive competitive value for their organization and “win” through quality employees. While laying out strategic workforce plans for future development of talent strategies, Eskenazi’s unique business approach introduces the benefits of transitioning to this new-age form of recruiting, and he hopes his readers will be relieved to discover that what could be very stressful has been diffused, broken down into solutions, and presented with humor.

Andis reSURGE Shaver Maintenance CLIPPER TIPS
By Andis Company
Sponsored by Andis Co.
The Andis® reSURGE® Shaver is quickly becoming a staple for barbers and stylists looking to provide the smoothest shaves for their clients. To keep your tool in top shape, it’s important to perform routine cleaning and maintenance with these easy steps.
Cleaning
To clean, grasp both sides of the foil assembly and lift it off of the shaver. Gently tap the base of the foil on a flat surface and use the provided brush to remove any remaining debris. Next, remove the cutters and lightly brush any hair out from them. Then, rinse the foil and cutters under water to remove any remaining debris. Andis Cool Care Plus® should then be sprayed on the foil and cutters to disinfect for ten minutes in-between clients.
Replacement of Foil and Cutters
You may need to replace the foil assembly if you notice any decrease in cutting performance after following the above maintenance steps. To begin, remove the foil by grasping both sides and lifting it off of the shaver – make sure to not remove the individual foils or they may accidentally be damaged. Repeat this process with the cutters. To install new cutters, hold on both sides, line up the small metal shaft on the underside with the notch on the shaver drive and push down firmly until it snaps into place. Put the new foil on, and you are all set to continue shaving. For more information and to view how-to videos on the reSURGE, visit andis.com today.
Biolage Professional Introduces Strength Recovery Collection, Infused With Vegan Squalane for Effective and Gentle Damage Repair
The new Strength Recovery Collection is infused with vegan squalane and other high-performing ingredients that help to repair existing damage and prevent against new damage caused by color treatments and heat styling
Biolage Professional, a worldwide leader in salon haircare, introduces the Strength Recovery Collection infused with 100% vegan squalane. The collection, which features four products, repairs, strengthens and increases softness and manageability, promoting 3X stronger hair after one use* and 73% less breakage** while maintaining, vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-, mineral oil-, and colorant-free formulas.
Chemical damage from color and texture services and mechanical damage from heat styling can deplete essential lipids from the hair, making the surface of hair fiber weak and prone to breakage and split ends. All products in the Strength Recovery collection are formulated with vegan squalane, an ingredient sustainably sourced from olive trees. Vegan squalane is an excellent hair emollient and antioxidant that mimics skin’s natural oils; it acts as a protective agent, helping reduce breakage while adding shine and softness.
This collection embodies “repair that cares,” featuring powerful and gentle repairing ingredients and luxurious and conditioning formulas to create a unique sensorial experience. This is the first collection launched from the brand since its August 2022 rebrand announcement that further solidified the company’s commitment to sustainability, as the collection features vegan and cruelty-free formulas and 100% PCR plastic packaging.

The shampoo, conditioning balm, and deep treatment pack are available at salons, Ulta Beauty, Amazon, JCPenney and Hair.com, and the leave-in spray will be available at the same retailers in mid-to-late September. The products in this collection are competitively priced per ounce, with an MSRP of $16-$24. For salon professionals, the Strength Recovery collection will be priced at $8-$12 per product. TOOL Talk
WITH YOUTUBE BARBER ACADEMY EDDIE
The barbers that come into your shop are busy entrepreneurs. When you can offer them a variety of tools as well as knowledge on those tools, it could help with the overall customer experience. This month I am sharing some inspiration on clipper blades. For more tips you can share with your customers, make sure to scan the QR code at the bottom of the page with a link to our video.
Tip #1
Great barbers can set themselves apart by knowing where and when to deploy each tool. Starting with the taper blade, it comes stocked on our X ERGO clipper. You will notice it is curved to help with scooping and blending but its true value lies in the forgiveness. When you are trying to remove dark spots or detail your blend, the taper blade will help reduce the chance of errors. The fade blade is a blade barbers use to remove harsh skin lines.
Tip #2
Our hottest clipper blade we can’t seem to make enough of are the Faper blades. This blade mixes the forgiveness you get from a Taper blade and the ability to remove harsh lines like a fade blade. Think of it as a Hybrid blade of Fade and Taper blade that can do it all!
Tips #3
If you want the closest cut possible (outside of an electric shaver) check out the NEW revolutionary Saber trimmer which never snags or pulls due to the new “The One” game changing beveled moving blade. If you are in the market for the most powerful shaver, the new S|C Rebel fits the bill. Check out the QR code & join me to expand on this topic further on The Youtube Barber Academy.

When I have to travel for work and I’m in between business meetings, there are a few things I always keep with me in my backpack or purse for a quick beauty fix. I love these lip crayons because they can be used as a liner or as an all over lip color. My hair is natural, so the Dreamworld turbans really come in handy for keeping my style in place, especially when my hair is in twists. And, I’m really loving these colors from OPI, that are perfect for holiday vibes.
