We lost our beloved Lola this past June. Lola was an 85-pound Goldendoodle who had been a part of our family for almost 14 years. I went a little crazy when I knew she was going, and went on a manic search for a new dog. I really cannot explain this—even to myself—but the idea of being a household without a dog seemed unbearable, and honestly, I am really not even a dog person. But, I am a life person. I love the feeling of living in a lively household. Well, beware of what you wish for… Now we have Gilligan, a very much alive mini-doodle puppy. Gilligan came to us after an intensive training program. I know, I know, it’s not the dog that needs to be trained—anyhow, that’s another story. However, I will share one tidbit— dogs work for the reward of a good treat! I know, I know… Of course, I had to make modifications to our home to accommodate Gilligan. We created a small fenced-in area off the side of our house, just for him! First week home he managed to squeeze through the fence posts and run free! He really isn’t that interested in hanging out in that area by himself— I never quite envisioned myself sitting in a fenced-in yard supervising him— but, there I am. I also had our mud room re-worked to accommodate a builtin dog bed. It’s lovely. I had a memory foam bed made from fabric to match our tile floor. I just love the look of it—just as well because good old Gill has no interest in sleeping there. Our tile floor is plenty comfy, evidently. Gilligan is providing us with exactly what we need as we continue to stay home, and forces us outside where we meet and greet neighbours, many of whom did the same as us—got a COVID puppy! The point of me introducing Gilligan is to say that no matter how much you think you have control over life, you don’t. Life happens, and we really never know how things are going to turn out. But if we continue to find small joys, and are able to laugh through it all, the tough stuff becomes a little more bearable. Although, I recognize that much of what is happening in the world cannot be laughed through. I wish you all some small joy in reading our latest issue which offers some great holiday gift-giving ideas along with our inspiring home and lifestyle stories and dining delights. Comfort & Joy,

BUSINESS SENSE

Franca Gatto has a long-standing passion for beautiful outdoor spaces. With a degree in business and a diploma in horticulture, she was able to affectively combine her intuitive design sense into a dream job. In 2017, she partnered with an interior designer to open Eden Design, a full spectrum design firm. “Our offering of both interior and landscape design services is one of our unique selling propositions,” states the savvy business woman. She also adds, “The memorable interiors and evocative landscapes we create are the result of a comprehensive skill set and honed design sense.”

GEORGIAN STYLE In the home that Franca and her husband built 11 years ago, her finely-tuned sense for combining both interior and exterior design is obvious. The Georgian-style architecture illustrates the classical detailing of the period that Franca studied in detail as she worked through the design process. “Details like the arched portico, ornate front door transom, third floor dormer windows, decorative roof brackets and rear porch cupola add to the period character,” Franca offers. The swoon-worthy landscaping is reminiscent of something you might find in Europe. “The garden is designed in a classic European style and includes formal hedges, a tree allée and garden statuary as focal points,” explains Franca about her outdoor spaces that offer yearround appeal.

YEAR-ROUND OUTDOOR LIVING While dining outside in the winter months is challenging in Ottawa, the garden is still very much a year-round feature with an outdoor décor that can be seen through the grand windows of the home. At night, lights twinkle around the large property which is often the stage for pre-meal and celebration cocktails or hot chocolate and marshmallow roasting. Franca notes how she gathers natural elements to create the outdoor decorations: “I make many of my own fresh outdoor arrangements. Using plant material collected from my property, I create an evergreen swag for the light post, and exterior coach lights, a wreath for the front door, and arrangements for the entry planters. Cedar, juniper, birch, dogwood, boxwood and wild grape are some of my favourite cuttings.”

HOLIDAY TEXTURE With nature-inspired décor taking over the outdoor space, the décor within her home can be described as classically elegant. Modern elements are injected with classical traditional components for an up-to-date warm style. During the holiday season, silver and gold play a leading role within the space. Franca’s tree is adorned with plums, gold and copper to create the textural feeling which she deems crucial. “To add understated elegance, I inject textures and finishes in the form of mercury glass, crystal, fur, felt, wool, velvet and jute. fter decades of working on beautiful and respected buildings around the globe, architect Stephen Jones returned to Ottawa to enjoy his two children and, together with a huge team, design what will be Parliament Hill’s newly renovated Centre Block. Early spring 2019 found Stephen looking out his window to a long backyard, buried deep in three feet of snow. Anticipating a busy summer in the city, the wheels began to turn. “I decided to make my property more seasonally enjoyable by creating a small cottage in town with a long deck, similar to a dock.” Designing a structure reminiscent of a tropical Tiki bar, Stephen hired a company to build the foundation, and soon began construction on his urban escape. “For me this was a labour of love. I grew up in my dad’s workshop learning to create and design things from scratch. Over many years, I have really enjoyed building outbuildings, deck structures, tree-houses and doing home renovations.” Working with suppliers such as The Wood Source in Manotick, Stephen ordered a selection of stunning and durable Canadian wood. Choosing pressure-treated lumber for the full undercarriage of the deck and superstructure, beauty was added using red cedar with doors and trim of Douglas fir. Layers of polycarbonate glazing were selected to ensure insulated and durable windows and skylights. Requiring little décor, the Tiki bar is now home to a global collection of coasters, candles, and thanks to its three-season greenhouse capabilities, a wealth of tropical plants. Never expecting that a global pandemic was on the horizon, Stephen says it was a real blessing to have started this project when he did. “With everything completed,

our office was able to gather here for socially distant meetings, just three weeks after being shut down.” Designated, “Conference Room T” (for Tiki) by his colleagues, Stephen says that it has been an absolute joy to be able to invite friends, neighbours and business associates over for COVID-19 friendly outdoor barbeques, beverages and conversation. As the Tiki bar is fully wired for laptops, music and blenders, favourite drink orders include strawberry daiquiris, spicy margaritas and a drink he calls Lynn’s Dark and Stormy. “I believe it to be a combination of spiced rum, Ginger Beer, soda, lemon, strawberries and rhubarb. It is truly one of the best things I have ever tasted.” Music is always a background must with blues singers such as Joe Bonamassa and Taj Mahal on the playlist, along with the reggae sounds of Bob Marley and other music from the Caribbean. Stephen has no plans to close down the Tiki bar for winter. “The Tiki bar is not insulated because I wanted to make sure that the cedar interior remained visible. However, with the addition of a small heater, it is the ideal destination for snowy candlelit dinner parties of two or three.” Holiday décor includes the placement of lights underneath the deck and the use of over 60 electric candles to add dazzle and warmth. Asked what he enjoys most about his backyard oasis, Stephen chooses the happy responses of those he cares about. “People walk around the corner and say, ‘Man that is stunning.’ People love being here, and it is such a great place to gather and talk. I look at it every day and it has now become a part of me.”

hen you have a family of three growing and active boys, the kitchen really is the operational heart of the home. It’s the non-stop fuelling station, the chit-chat space, a homework centre—plus an extra workfrom-home area. Monica Kunstadt was brought up in a local family known for its sporting business, and works there today as the financial controller at Kunstadt Sports. Her husband, Jon Landon, is a former CFL football player with the Toronto Argonauts and is the athletic director at Ashbury College. So, it’s not surprising that their sons Jackson (13), Marcus (11) and Isaac (9) are all actively into sports. After living in their Stittsville home for six years, Monica knew it was time to double the size of the kitchen and renovate to make the living space more functional. “When we purchased this house, it was a typical older home with many smaller rooms—good bones—but it needed updating,” explains Monica about the traditional layout of the two storey, fourbedroom house built in 1978. “We wanted something that our growing family could easily expand into, without breaking the bank or compromising on style,” adds the savvy businesswoman.

KITCHEN SPACE & STYLE

Home stylist Samantha Armstrong of North+Nash Design was enlisted to design the kitchen and manage the renovation project. Monica was so pleased with the designer’s work that she and Samantha carried on to revamp the family room to open up the living space off the kitchen. “We basically turned four rooms into two by removing two walls,” says Monica. The kitchen space expanded into the formerly separate dining room and the family room was extended into a living area that is now used for dining. Top of the kitchen list for Monica was, “A huge island that would seat all of us, entertain friends and be the focal point of the room.” This was achieved in the contemporary, clean-line design with a 12-foot island topped with marble-style white quartz. It accommodates eight stools and, most importantly, houses an ice-maker that produces up to 50 pounds of ice a day for bartending duties—which Monica admits was Jon’s only request!

Multiple pot lights and two ceiling spotlights were used exclusively for lighting. This was to avoid blocking sight lines with low-hanging fixtures, especially for Monica’s six-foot-four husband. Dark-stained maple flooring along with gold-coloured faucets and stools add warm touches to the white cabinetry and decor. The next priority was a full-size refrigerator, not a combined fridge and freezer unit. It’s a necessity for storing the volume of fresh food that their family of five needs, as Monica states, “Food restocking is a full-time job!” She adds that a generous walk-in pantry was another must have. An invitingly cozy sitting area, tucked onto the side of the kitchen, is a bonus spot for Monica to relax with friends or enjoy some quiet time while keeping an eye on kitchen activities. The Imprezza cabinets were custom-ordered from Lowes, together with the countertops and stainless-steel appliances. Says Monica of her smart and stylish kitchen, “It’s not fancy, but we love it!”

esigner Tanya Collins didn’t look to trends in the design world for inspiration when she started the decorating project for the CHEO Dream of a Lifetime lottery home— she looked out to the world at large. The bohemian theme, found throughout the 4,700 square-foot Minto home, is reminiscent of global travel. In fact, Tanya even used inspiration from a planned trip to Spain, which she had to cancel due to the pandemic.

HOME Dream Home

Another outcome of COVID-19 restrictions is that the home is only available for tour online. The CHEO Foundation has had the option in place for the past six years to virtually walk through the home—and the interactive tour is the next best thing to physically being in the home. But Dan Champagne, vice-president of development and corporate relations for the CHEO Foundation, assures the 35,000 annual, in-person tour goers that as soon as it is permitted the doors will open. “Having a virtual tour established has been an important part of our success during the pandemic,” reveals Dan, while noting the importance of touring in person. “It’s an enjoyable ritual for thousands of people who love to see the home each year. They are inspired by the decorating ideas and it has become a favourite outing for many seniors.” Design inspiration is plentiful this year. The architectural features of the four-bedroom, three-storey home include transoms above the doors on the main floor, cathedral ceilings and decorative wood beams (from Atmosphère & Bois) in several rooms. The black window trim is a stand-out feature for both the interior and exterior. “The black interior windows act as a punctuation mark to the neutral décor,” states Tanya. But when asked to name a favourite detail or space she is reluctant to choose noting that, “Every room is full of interesting details.”

HOME Dream Home

The neutral colour scheme contributes to a feeling of lightness, although the décor is strong and full of personality which is a feature of boho styling. “This house is my interpretation of bohemian chic; a free-spirited, personal decorating style with lots of whimsy and exotica,” explains Tanya. The talented designer also reveals, “It was important to have the decorating layered on an interior, architectural shell that is full of character and with a choice of finishes that are earthy.” The earth tones are established quickly with closet and room doors painted in a deep forest green. Faux wood tile and brick all play into the theme. Tanya went so far as to create an old-world feeling in the back splash of the Laurysen kitchen by asking master tiler Jose Antonio Teves Pereira (who worked on all the tile in the home) to lay the tiles as wide apart as possible. She then had him apply the contrast grout so it would look like it was overflowing. It is just one example of the dedication of the trades and suppliers whose efforts go into creating a home which is the stuff that dreams are made from. Furnishings from La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries complement the look with fabric selections that hold true to the style in welcoming spaces that call for visitors. This home could be yours for a ticket price of $100 or increase your chances and buy a bundle of three for $250. Deadline to buy is December 18. Take the tour at dreamofalifetime.ca

hen Benjamin Moore introduced Aegean Teal as its paint colour of the year for 2021 it was widely accepted as a shade that addresses the need for a serene home environment. Trends usually speak to the world at large, and any number of things can play into that. Right now a unified call for peace is felt globally. Green has always played a leading role on the design scene as a colour that breathes life into space. This muted sage is a reflection of the earthy tones that are making their presence known in the style world. The shade is so easy to live with that it will work in principal rooms including bedrooms and bathrooms. Pair it with neutrals and add hints of plum or pink along with textured accent patterns to create a stylish look throughout. Brass fixtures are the ideal metal to bring a richness to the look that leans a little more towards the classic rather than the contemporary side of décor style.

Stay Calm BY MARY TAGGART PHOTOGRAPHY BY VALERIE WILCOX

Canadian designer and TV personality Sarah Richardson has spent more than 20 years working in a multitude of design-related capacities. Her latest endeavour is with Canadian furniture company Palliser. She has designed four different lines of furnishings that evoke a sense of calm with a clean-lined aesthetic and soothing palette. The talented designer is known for her classic styling, and love of blue and green watery coastal influences which can be seen within the collection. Sarah also professes a leaning towards neutrals. “At my core I’m actually somebody who loves to live with the beauty of naturally-neutral materials. Cream on cream, mixed with oyster, flax, linen and shell tones are my happy place—everything in the natural realm is what I could live with until the end of time and never tire of. That’s why you’ll see a real celebration of naturally-neutral tones in every part of my four collections.” A backdrop of creams and whites sets the tone for the soothing look. But there is no lack of intrigue within the furnishings. Sarah has incorporated rich texture and deep tones of blue and earth shades to create a look that stands the test of time, yet calls to the trend for a touch of modern mixed in with the classics.

HOME Design On Trend

With so much time being spent at home these days, Sarah advises against using heavy patterned fabrics. Instead, she suggests incorporating textural detailing into a more neutral scheme to achieve a balance of intrigue and calm. This is particularly important within a home office space where simple décor helps to ease stress. Adapting space to meet the demands of the new normal has been a challenge within many households, but it’s also something that Sarah claims to be just a part of modern living. Her designs reflect a flexible mindset. “Versatility and practicality were always top of mind in the development process. We tried to imagine every home scenario— you might need a desk to also function as a console table, or a sofa table that has storage, and can become a bar or buffet. We really wanted everything to be able to

go into a multitude of locations, so height, width, depth was thoroughly considered,” states the thoughtful designer. The four new styles designed by Sarah Richardson for the Palliser collection are The Annex, The Shore, The Boulevard and The Vista. Each has its own look, but all share a similar feeling with hints of contemporary neutrals injected with personality either through bold accents, natural influences, classic styling and shape influences. All furnishings are from the Sarah Richardson for Palliser collection. Find the collection through sarahrichardson.palliser.com

LIVING Music BY DANI-ELLE DUBÉ

The Tradition Continues

PHOTO SUPPLIED AND SHOT PRE-COVID-19

I

t is widely known that music offers a sanctity in times of despair, but given that live performances have been banned since mid-March due to COVID-19 restrictions, performers have had to get creative to be heard. This year was to be the 75th anniversary of the National Capital Region Kiwanis Music Festival. Rather than prepare for a celebration, executive director Kim Chadsey feared the worst. “The festival was facing a crisis. The Festival Board and I faced the terrible prospect of presiding over the sudden fatality of a great institution,” recalls Kim. “We all felt a terrible responsibility even though the circumstances were beyond our control. We were deeply saddened by what we might have to do.”

Launched in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, the festival has been a bright light in Ottawa’s cultural scene ever since. Thousands of young people in musical disciplines from piano and voice, to strings and concert bands, participated in this annual springtime festival, honing and proving their musical skills. Many had professional careers in mind. The festival, which had been the launching pad of such stellar musical talents as pianist Angela Hewitt, baritone Gerald Finley and many more, would have to suspend operations. Not only that, the festival organization itself could face bankruptcy and not be able to pick up the pieces after the pandemic had ended— whenever that might be.

Cancelling was sure to bring disappointment to the nearly 800 entrants, but the financial threat was critical as well. The participants had already paid their entry fees, so cancelling would likely mean the return of those fees and a need to consider closing the festival office which partly relied on them to cover operations. As the directors met by Zoom on a late-March evening, the idea began to emerge of a virtual festival—essentially held on-line. Participants would record their performances to be presented to adjudicators working in their home-studio offices and be judged by similar standards as in a live performance, but remotely. Kim thought it was a great idea, but wondered, “Would the festival participants embrace it in sufficient numbers to make it work?” Board chair Andy Xhignesse said that not only was a virtual festival the only option, but believed it was also, “A vital opportunity to take advantage of modern technology and do something truly innovative this year.” Shortly after that critical board meeting, Kim issued a statement that the 75th Kiwanis Music Festival would be held online in 2020. And she awaited the reaction. In the following days, it became evident that the musical participants were more than ready to tackle this new challenge. Only a handful bowed out. Even vocalists, who were unable to record in the same room as their accompanists, rose to the occasion and used their accompanists’ pre-recorded work. Some 1,000 musical performances were presented and judged by the equally sequestered adjudicators. Although it was a scramble to come up with a short-term plan for this year, Kim says organizers now know that the festival will have to be online once again for 2021. The 2020 plan will remain in place with performers sending in their performances by video for judges to look over. Only time—and COVID-19—will tell just how long this “new normal” will continue, or if it will be a permanent feature in the future. One thing is certain, though—The National Capital Region Kiwanis Music Festival doesn’t plan on going anywhere any time soon! HOLIDAY 2020 o ttawaathome.ca  33

FLAVOURS OF MEXICO

Ottawa couple Sandeep and Riti Gupta co-founded Cada Día sipping tequila, to embody the joy of living life to the fullest and embracing the good in each day (which is the translated meaning of its name). Their journey began with the understanding that purpose and balance in life is paramount. Inspired by the vibrant colours and fiery and flavourful foods of Mexico, they found a way to embrace its culture through artfully crafted tequila. Cada Día tequila is authentically made in Mexico, but the company is based here in Ottawa. While the premium tequila can be found at some of Ottawa’s best restaurants, during COVID, they are offering no charge delivery for individual bottle orders in the Ottawa area and throughout Ontario.

BRIDGING THE

ver the past number of years, conversations about mental health have grown by leaps and bounds. But a huge amount of work remains to be done, especially when it comes to children and youth. According to Children’s Mental Health Ontario, one in five kids will experience mental health issues, but five out of six of them will not receive the support they need. And, frighteningly, Canada’s youth suicide rate is the third highest in the industrialized world. “Generally, the public knows that there are a lot of mental health needs that are not being met by the system,” says Hilary Allen, who volunteered to manage a project called Supporting Parents of Suicidal Youth for the charity Parents’ Lifeline of Eastern Ontario (PLEO).

PLEO provides family peer support for parents with a child facing mental health challenges. With their help, Hilary convened a series of focus groups to determine the top areas of concern for parents with children in crisis, and then created a series of practical, hopeful videos and messages featuring clinicians, suicide prevention experts, parents and youth. “If your child is able to get care, the medication prescribed can take up to six weeks to work, and in the meantime there is no firm guidance for parents to notice if things aren’t going ok,” explains Hilary. “Additionally, if your child is suicidal and admitted to hospital it’s usually just for a stabilization period and then they are sent home,” she continues. “You’re told to keep an eye on your child while you wait for an appointment that may be weeks away, but you have no formal training, no real support, and a huge emotional investment in keeping your child alive.” The videos—which feature introductory remarks from famed actor and mental health advocate Mary Walsh—are meant to give parents comfort, answers and valuable information from others who have first-hand knowledge of their circumstances and fears. Accompanying info sheets offer brief tips to help parents manage through a period of overwhelming vulnerability and distress. Hilary knows that the videos are only part of the solution, but she also knows they make a difference. “This initiative is meeting a need that nothing else is meeting right now,” she concludes. “It’s just trying to build a bridge for families who are struggling to keep their kids alive.” If you or someone you love needs information or support from PLEO, please call the parents’ helpline at 613-321-3211 or visit www.pleo.on.ca HOLIDAY 2020 o ttawaathome.ca  39

Gift of Music PHOTOS AND WORDS BY TED SIMPSON

J

ohn Kofi Dapaah has spent the past 25 years sitting by the keys of a piano, riding a musical journey that has taken him to concert halls and studios around the world. He has learned from classical masters to become a teacher, a composer and a recording artist who has performed for dignitaries and Governors General. These days, life has become simpler for John. You’ll probably find him at home in Russell, in a small room that has just enough space to fit an upright piano. His walls are decorated with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, and a small bust of Ludwig van Beethoven—with his wild mane and intense gaze—sits atop the piano, staring down on John as he plays. Yet, even with everything going on outside his walls, when John plays his piano the air

comes alive with bright, beautiful energy and everything feels right in the world. “I think the best way to look at it is from a positive outlook, the other way will just make you go crazy,” John says with a laugh as he talks about the changes in his life since the global pandemic threw us all for a loop back in March. He had built a life around performing on the piano and teaching at his school, the Piano Place. When the world changed this year, musicians were among the hardest hit and it left him with a lot of unknowns. But John is adapting, much like he has done throughout his life’s journey. John was born in Ghana, but his family moved to Japan when he was still very young as his talented engineer father had a scholarship to complete his graduate studies at a Japanese university. It was

there that John found music and began his classical piano studies with Tabuchi Masako in the city of Muroran on the island of Hokkaido. By age 11, his family had relocated again to settle in Canada, where John continued his study of the piano. By the time he was ready to set out on his own, John could feel the life of the musician calling him. “I went into music from high school; it was between that, architecture or math,” says John. “I didn’t want to become a math prof, so that was out. I loved architecture, design and everything, but I hated physics, so that was out too. I had a real affinity for music in general. I grew up with music and I’ve always been very musical—it just felt like a very natural progression of things.” John pursued his Bachelor of Music degree from Carleton University, travelling across the world yet again to complete the final year of his undergraduate music studies at the Kunstuniversität Graz in Austria. He then returned to Canada and obtained his Master’s degree at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University. Living such a far from ordinary life has probably set John up to make the best of the extraordinary situation we find ourselves in today. “I think in the beginning of the pandemic my outlook was more grim because of that fear of the unknown,” says John. “But as I settled into what this new normal is, I’ve tried to find different ways to not only manage the situation, but to take advantage of new opportunities and find new ways to be even more creative with what I’m doing.” Seeing the opportunity to reach out to potential students all over the world, John adjusted his teaching style to make up for not being in the room to show them where to place their hands on the keys. He provides his students with an escape from the confusion of the real world, into the structured escapism of the musical world, where they can get lost in the timeless melodies of jazz, R&B and classical. If you haven’t heard John Kofi Dapaah’s playing for yourself, you can find his debut album, Reflections, on Spotify. If you’re looking to shake up your holiday soundtrack, John has a Christmas album out that you’ll find on his Bandcamp page, it’s called Have Yourself a Jazzy Little Christmas.

reativity and business sense don’t always go hand in hand, but local artist Claire Desjardins has managed to do it for years. Known for vibrant contemporary pieces, Claire’s paintings are now being represented on houseware and clothing items, and available to purchase through large companies like Anthropologie. Art and creativity have always been a major part of Claire’s life. “I grew up in a family of artists, so making things with our hands was the norm. We were expected to be creative.” Although Claire has always had a passion for art, it was not her main career at first. After losing her job as a graphic designer in 2011, when the small company she worked for in Montreal was purchased by a large media company, she was forced to make a change and began painting fulltime. “I’ve worked hard, but I have also found myself in the right place at the right time, in recent years,” Claire explained. This includes her collaboration with Anthropologie. The week before she was laid off, she received an email from Anthropologie after they discovered her work on the blog MOCO LOCO. They were looking for local artists for their new Montreal location. Originally thinking it was spam, she then decided to take a chance and respond. After a few initial visits to her Montreal apartment from the team at Anthropologie, it turned into years of successful collaboration. Recently, Anthropologie sent her and three other artists to Art Basel in Miami where she spent days painting their merchandise by hand at a pop-up shop. Claire now lives in Gore, Quebec with her husband and two dogs, surrounded by nature which is a constant source of inspiration for her. “I’m really inspired by my day-to-day and what I see around me,” Claire said. In the spring she often paints a lot of florals as her property is filled with wildflowers that begin to burst into bloom after winter. Claire is now known for her bold use of colour and it has become a staple in her work. “I think we are all emotionally connected to colour, and my own rapport is one of joy and love. I enjoy putting colours together that emote such feelings to the viewer, including myself.”

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced Claire to shift her business. Travel for tradeshows, exhibitions, workshops and art fairs had been constant. She was in London this past February to launch her apparel line in the UK, but in March all of her travel stopped and she was forced to slow down. “My art and my art business have both changed substantially since the onset of the pandemic,” Claire said. “I was planning to take a break because I was feeling a little burnt out.” Time at home has allowed her to slow down her pace and focus on her art. “I still get into my studio most days, but there’s no pressure to produce,” Claire said. “I don’t really mind being a bit less productive, as it’s kind of nice to sit back and relax a bit after such crazy, busy years.” Claire’s art has been transferred onto numerous items, including candles and lamps, apparel, and even phone cases. That means art lovers can not only buy her paintings, but also bring a piece of her more affordable work into their home or wear her art! Find Claire’s artwork at clairedesjardins.com

One thing... BY HOLLIE GRACE JAMES  INSTAGRAM @holliegracejames PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK HOLLERON

ack in January, the biggest adjustment that Melissa Lamb and Nigel Romick were forced to make was swapping the dining room table for a makeshift changing area. It was another trick that they gladly added to their repertoire in learning to become resourceful and inventive first-time parents to their baby son Luca. After a whirlwind 2019, the Ottawa power couple were looking forward to a smooth 2020, but life had more difficulties in store with the abrupt appearance of COVID-19, rocking their well-laid foundation and forcing the duo to completely reevaluate their lives’ course once again. While grappling with parenthood and preparing for a move into a new home, the pandemic caused a sudden and massive hit to both of their careers. Melissa, a television host, lifestyle expert and brand ambassador, lost a coveted and lucrative contract. Nigel, a defensive end for the Ottawa REDBLACKS, saw his career stall, as well as his income, after the cancellation of the CFL season. Leaning on each other, as they have learned to do so well, Nigel has since found work in landscaping and—in a potential silver-lining moment—has joined the Ottawa Fire Services Volunteer Program. Although the latter was a goal that he originally planned to accomplish later in life during his post football retirement days, the pandemic consequences forced his hand, and there’s no better time than now to make that dream a reality. Similarly, Melissa has been able to adapt her passions and, thanks to ongoing brand ambassador work in partnership with St. Laurent Shopping Centre, some things have managed to remain steadily in place.

leads to anothe󵁲... As Melissa and Nigel wait for word on the CFL’s status come spring 2021, the two can only embrace the chaos and look ahead to the rest of their lives. Because no matter what the future holds, they are happy to be able to tackle it together.

POWER COUPLE Born in Vankleek Hill and raised in Orleans, Melissa had always envisioned how her life would unfold, and although her current storyline isn’t precisely what she predicted, things are turning out to be better than she could have ever imagined. Seven years spent as host for CTV Morning Live was a job that she loved, but it came to an end in the fall of 2017. Seared into her memory in vivid detail, Melissa describes how she was on assignment at the CHEO Dream Home when she was called back to the office and let go due to “restructuring.” With time and distance comes clarity, and crediting the hardship as simply part of her story, she feels thankful for the opportunities that have arisen from the ashes. With new and continued partnerships, including her work with St. Laurent Shopping Centre, Melissa admits, “I did love my job, but it wasn’t exactly what I saw myself doing. I never would have taken a leap of faith—I’d be there until this day had

they not ended the contract. Would I be happy? Probably not, because I feel like I’m so much happier now.” Nigel is one of only three original Ottawa REDBLACKS players remaining since the inaugural season in 2014. Born and raised in Thunder Bay, the athlete began his football career playing for his high school team and went on to become the third-round CFL draft pick from St. Mary’s University in Halifax. A rough start in 2014 saw the Redblacks win only two games, but he emphasizes, “I was just happy that I was here.” Although maintaining a positive outlook can be difficult, the team persisted and ended up winning the Grey Cup Championship in 2016, the first time in 40 years for a franchise from Ottawa. Throughout her work with CTV, Melissa covered the REDBLACKS extensively. “There were so many times when we would have been at the same event, maybe we even brushed shoulders,” recalls Nigel, adding with a laugh, “Who knew we’d end up having a baby together?” Three years and one tiny Sagittarius later, Nigel popped the question during an impromptu hike in Gatineau Park. He presented a 1.6 carat diamond ring— which also includes Luca’s birthstone— designed by Margot McNaull of Stór Jewelry Co, and she said yes.

Early next year, the family of three will be leaving their rental and moving into the first home that they’ve purchased together; a Mattamy build in Orleans’ Summerside South community. Having found herself outnumbered by boys, Melissa says that her style has evolved, becoming a “bit more neutral,” although she still wants to incorporate a touch of feminine aesthetic, which will be prominent in her office. “I’m super excited because it will be my girlie explosion!” Saving photos found on Pinterest for inspiration, the couple is looking forward to a modern country vibe in their new fourbedroom home, with homey pieces like rustic wood mixed with elegant staples like sparkling chandeliers. Having chosen to go full out boy for Luca’s room, the nursery is decorated in a colour palette of grey, navy and white, and

portrays a theme of woodland animals, which pays homage to Nigel’s northern roots. The master bedroom will continue the neutral trend with colours like grey and white, although Nigel has acquiesced to Melissa throwing in some purple and pink accents. With an ensuite bathroom and a walk-in closet—”I’m so excited!” exclaims Melissa—there will be plenty of space for their king-sized bed and perhaps some of Melissa’s DIY projects. The kitchen they envision is clean, simple and mostly white with white granite, white subway tile and a dark sink with a gold faucet. As cooking enthusiasts, the pair is also looking forward to incorporating a large island with bar stools. Most of all, the growing family is anticipating the rest of their journey, the part where they create their very own home together. HOLIDAY 2020 o ttawaathome.ca  53

If you loved playdough as a kid and working with your hands in the kitchen, this is the dish for you. A festive red, green and white mixture encases baby potatoes for a seasonal and intriguing addition to your holiday table. If making individual portions, you may need three-pounds of kosher salt to ensure the potatoes are well covered.

with Cracked Peppercorn & Sage Butter INGREDIENTS POTATOES 2 lbs small potatoes, washed 2–3 lbs kosher salt 10 fresh sage leaves (more if desired) 2 tbsp pink peppercorns 1 cup water (more if required)

DIPPING BUTTER 1 tbsp pink peppercorns, crushed 3 large sage leaves, finely chopped 2 tbsp finely chopped chives ½ cup salted-butter, room temperature

PREPARATION 1. Heat oven to 400ºF.

2. In large bowl, mix salt, sage, peppercorns and water, crushing peppercorns & pinching sage leaves with fingers to release natural oils. Mixture should feel like wet sand; add extra water if required.

In small bowl, combine crushed peppercorns, sage and chives; add butter and stir with a fork until well blended. Divide into 4–6 small serving dishes so that each person has a personal butter pot to dip the hot potatoes.

3. Transfer enough salt mixture into bottom of wide, shallow, heavy ovenproof 2 L (8 cup) skillet or casserole (or 4 shallow wide mouth ramekins for individual servings) to make a salt bed about ½ inch thick. 4. Gently press potatoes into salt bed and fairly close together. Top potatoes with remaining salt mixture; press and smooth with hands until the rounded tops of the potatoes just show as bumps under the salt crust. 5. Bake 30 to 40 minutes, until potatoes are fork-tender. The salt will dry out and form a very hard crust.

TO SERVE Crack the hard crust of the salt-packed potatoes with a knife or sturdy kitchen utensil to loosen the potatoes inside. Place hot casserole dish in centre of table on a heat resistant platter. Ensure each person is equipped with individual forks to retrieve and dust off the hot potatoes and their own dish of seasoned butter for dunking. Have fun!

FOOD Paula’s Bites

CRISPY BA K E D RAVIOLI INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place oven rack on lower-middle position. Preheat oven to 425ºF. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place a wire rack on top. Lightly brush the rack with 1–2 tsp (5–10 mL) of the oil. Set aside. 2. In a shallow dish whisk together the flour and half of the salt, basil and oregano. BY PAULA ROY twitterinstagram @paulajroy

3. In a second shallow dish, whisk the eggs and milk or water until well blended. PHOTO BY MARK HOLLERON

Fresh ravioli gets transformed into a crunchy, dippable treat the whole family will love! This easy snack or appetizer takes just minutes to prepare; it’s even faster if you have a spray bottle to mist the coated ravioli with oil, but you can also brush it on. If you prefer, cook the ravioli in an air fryer; it should take about 12–15 minutes.

INGREDIENTS 2 tbsp (30 mL) canola or olive oil, divided 10 ounces (280 g) fresh ravioli (approximately 20 pieces) 1 egg 2 tbsp (30 mL) milk or water ¼ cup (32 g) all-purpose flour 1 tsp (4.5 g) coarse kosher salt, divided 1 tsp (4.5 g) each dried basil and oregano, divided

¾ cup (90 g) plain panko or other dry breadcrumbs ⅓ cup (30 g) finely grated parmesan, divided 2 tbsp (3.25 g) chopped fresh Italian parsley or basil leaves Marinara or pizza sauce and pesto, for dipping

4. In a third shallow dish, combine the panko, parmesan, remaining seasoning and ¼ cup (60 mL) of the parmesan. Whisk together with a fork. 5. Dip ravioli one at a time, turning in each dish to coat, first in the flour mixture, then the egg and finally in the panko mixture, pressing into panko so crumbs adhere. Place coated ravioli on the wire rack approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart and continue till all are coated. 6. Brush or spray tops of ravioli with just enough of the remaining oil to coat lightly. 7. Bake 15–20 minutes or until ravioli is golden brown and crisp. 8. Transfer the cooked ravioli to plates or broad bowls. Sprinkle with parmesan and chopped herbs. Serve immediately with bowls of pesto and/or warm marinara sauce for dipping. Serves 4 HOLIDAY 2020 o ttawaathome.ca  69
