Greetings from the Governor General of Canada

Greetings from our Artistic Director, Roman Borys

It gives me great pleasure to extend greetings to everyone attending the 2012 Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, widely known as Ottawa Chamberfest.

Each year, as I program the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, I am struck by the vast range of chamber music from around the world, and the many intimate connections that exist between it and the cultures, genres, places, and times from which it derives.

Whatever our backgrounds, each of us can appreciate the depth and richness of the universal language of music. The differences between peoples and cultures are invariably overcome by its ability to bring people together. Likewise, and for several years now, the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival has been adding to the richness and far-reaching influence of Canada’s cultural scene.

Chamberfest expresses these connections through an incredible variety of music experienced in close proximity to the artists. The richness and depth of Chamberfest’s performances offer a wealth of inspiring experiences for all listeners, whether newcomers to our festival or experienced patrons.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the musicians, volunteers and organizers whose combined efforts fill audience members with tremendous joy.

However, like any great art, Chamberfest’s many treasures can be better appreciated with an understanding of the many cultures, contexts, and time periods from which these wonderful works were created.

I wish you all a most enjoyable festival.

I encourage you, therefore, to look beyond Chamberfest’s magnificent concert offerings, to the many interactive and educational programs available to you this summer.

His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnson C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D. Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada Vice-regal Patron of the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival

Follow Rob Kapilow as he unlocks the secrets of classical music’s masterworks in his What Makes It Great? presentations, or experience Harry Hallbreich’s encyclopedic knowledge of composers and their works with his annual Chamber Chats series. Our Up Close and Personal conversations bring you closer to Chamberfest’s charismatic performers, while Rob Kapilow’s intriguing explorations of the connection between music and art at the National Gallery of Canada will open both your ears and your eyes. These opportunities will surely enrich your Chamberfest experience—think of them as your audio guides to the festival. On behalf of the Ottawa Chamber Music Society, I welcome you to the 19th edition of Chamberfest. Roman Borys Cellist, Gryphon Trio Artistic Director, Ottawa Chamber Music Society

Introductions by Eric Friesen The unaccompanied cello suites of Johann Sebastian Bach, performed in two concerts by one of the most extraordinary cellists of his generation. Colin Carr achieves that rare balance between personal interpretation and scrupulous consideration of the score that epitomizes musical performance at its most accomplished.

Introductions by Eric Friesen Part II of the unaccompanied cello suites of Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by Colin Carr. Whether it is in the driving—at times cutting— energy of these interpretations, profoundly moving and gentle effusions, or in Colin’s exquisite taste and musical intelligence, these performances capture a truly extraordinary event.

Ave Maria Hosted by composer/conductor Rob Kapilow, this unique and exciting new collaboration between Ottawa Chamberfest and the National Gallery of Canada blends discussion, demonstration, and performance in an exploration of the parallels between two worlds of expression: the world of art and the world of music. Through the pairing of individual pieces of music in live performance with related works of art from the Gallery’s collection, the series aims to help us see art differently and hear music differently as we learn to listen for the music of art.

Giuseppe Cambini (1746 - c. 1825)

Willa Cather wrote, “There are only two or three human stories, and they go on repeating themselves as fiercely as if they had never happened before.” Yet each generation and art form tells these recurring stories in their own unique way.

Salvatore Sciarrino (b. 1947)

One of the most powerful images in the history of art and music is that of the Virgin Mary. The changing ways in which she appears through the millenia tell us a great deal about both the artists who interpreted her likeness and the times in which they lived. This unusual program pairs arrangements of the original Gregorian chant, Ave Maria, with paintings and sculptures of the Virgin Mary throughout history. In this way, we reveal the intricate and evolving means by which storytellers and their stories connect. Schedule 1pm—2pm 3:30pm—4:30pm 6pm—7pm

Conditions of FREE* Admission The Music of Art is free to Members of the National Gallery of Canada, and also to holders of 2012 Ottawa Chamberfest Prime 360 or Passport Plus passes. To enter, you must present your Gallery membership, Prime 360 or Passport Plus at the Gallery Box Office. A Chamberfest volunteer will guide you to the presentation. Every Thursday, from 5pm to 8pm, the National Gallery of Canada is free to all. Admission to the August 2 and August 9 6pm events is, therefore, also free to all. Otherwise, to attend The Music of Art, you must purchase a General Admission ticket at the National Gallery of Canada Box Office. Please visit the National Gallery of Canada website for ticket prices and Box Office hours. After the presentation has concluded, you are welcome to tour the remainder of the permanent collection. Tickets to the special exhibits must be purchased separately. Important: Each presentation has a strict limit of 50 patrons. We cannot guarantee entry at your preferred time.

Our programme features the works of Joseph Martin Kraus (“The Mozart of Sweden”), Le Chevalier de St. George (“Le Mozart noir”), Juan Crisostemos Arriaga (“The Mozart of Spain”), and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself.

Quatuor Ébène Jazz Night Wednesday 08 August 9:30pm—10:30pm Saint Brigid’s Centre for the Arts Tickets $35 (includes Chet Doxas) Pierre Colombet Violin Gabriel Le Magadure Violin Mathieu Herzog Viola Raphaël Merlin Cello Equally as accomplished in jazz as they are in classical performance, Quatuor Ébène makes its Chamberfest debut with their own Late Night arrangements of Jazz, film, and contemporary music. Don’t miss their much-anticipated Festival Gala chamber performance on August 9.

Through the pairing of individual pieces of music in live performance with related works of art from the Gallery’s collection, the series aims to help us see art differently and hear music differently as we learn to listen for the music of art. Perhaps the most striking aesthetic trend of the second half of the 20th century is its powerful rejection of the complexity that dominated most mid-century art and music, in favour of a new, minimalist simplicity: a belief that “less is more.” In music, composers like Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Phillip Glass abandonded the dense, forbidding atonal compositions of Schoenberg and his followers and reclaimed the power of tonality in exciting, fresh Minimalist scores. Meanwhile, artists like Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman rejected the intricacies of earlier Abstract Expressionists and painted startlingly new Color Field canvases with areas of unbroken surfaces and flat planes. Pairing a performance of the “chance” music of John Cage with Jackson Pollock’s action painting, and a performance of Steve Reich’s minimalist music with the paintings of Newman and Rothko, this program explores the different ways that art and music of the 20th century have turned “less into more.” Schedule 1pm—2pm 3:30pm—4:30pm 6pm—7pm
