ANDREW BURASHKO
OUR EVENING’S PERFORMERS CAROLYN BLACKWELL, VIOLA Carolyn Blackwell is an exceptional Canadian talent, based in Toronto. She has been featured with the Via Salzburg Chamber Orchestra, the Aviv Quartet and the Artists of The Royal Conservatory (ARC). A principal of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra and participant in the Prussia Cove Seminars, UK, Ms. Blackwell made her American debut at the 2011 Spoleto Festival to much critical acclaim. Upcoming projects include concerts at the Cervo Music Festival, Italy and a tour of England culminating in her Wigmore Hall debut in October of 2012. ROMAN BORYS, CELLO Roman Borys is one of Canada’s most active chamber musicians, and a founding member of the Gryphon Trio. Roman oversees the production and development of the Gryphon Trio’s various projects, including education and outreach initiatives. He is entering his seventh season as Artistic Director of the Ottawa Chamber Music Society. A native of Toronto, Roman studied with Janos Starker at Indiana University and Aldo Parisot at Yale University. He now teaches at the University of Toronto faculty of Music, along with Gryphon Trio pianist Jamie
Parker and violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon. ANDREW BURASHKO, PIANO Andrew debuted at the age of seventeen with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and has performed with most Canadian orchestras, collaborating with conductors Marin Alsop, Andrew Davis, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and Pinchas Zukerman among others. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. Andrew has an ongoing collaboration with modern dancer Peggy Baker, and is the Artistic Director of The Art of Time Ensemble, which is committed to reaching across the borders that separate artistic genres and audiences. Andrew has recorded for CBC SM5000, Naxos, Centerdisc and Opening Day labels, and is a faculty member at the Glenn Gould School. JOHN JOHNSON, SAXOPHONE Juno award winning sax player John Johnson is a well-known fixture of the Toronto music scene, playing with Soul Stew, The Montuno Police, The Barlow Group, Michael Pickett, The Boss Brass and Manteca. John’s versatility has led to concerts with Molly Johnson, Holly Cole, Diana

ANDY MAIZE Krall, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Peabo Bryson, Dianne Reeves, and the TSO. In everything he does, Johnson brings a rare combination of musical sensitivity and the technical ability to play just about anything. LARRY LARSON, TRUMPET Larry Larson has been Principal Trumpet of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony since 1993. He enjoys a varied career which includes leading his own jazz quintet, duo recitals with harpist Lori Gemmell, playing for the Stratford Festival, recording commercial jingles and soundtracks, and serving as trumpet coach for the National Youth Orchestra.
JOHN MANN in film, stage and TV. Among his credits are Macheath, in the Vancouver Opera production of Three Penny Opera, and the lead in the Theatre Calgary / Vancouver Playhouse production of Beyond Eden. For Vancouver Arts Club Theatre, John was the Emcee in Cabaret, Thenardier in Les Miserables, and the Engineer in Miss Saigon. Film and television appearances include Personal Effects and Intelligence.
ANDY MAIZE, VOCALS Andy Maize has been singing in countryfolkrock band Skydiggers for the past 25 years. Their latest release, Northern Shore, came out in April. He is also a co-founder of MapleMusic.com, an online retailer of Canadian recording artist’s music and merchandise. Andy would like to thank his wife Andrea Nann and son Owen Maize for their love and support.
VÉRONIQUE MATHIEU, VIOLIN Canadian violinist Véronique Mathieu has performed in Canada, Europe, South Africa, South America, and the United States. She is a winner of the 2010 Krakow International Contemporary Music Competition, the 2009 Canada Council Bank of Instruments Competition, and the 2009 Competition in the Performance of Music from Spain and Latin America. Véronique is Artist in residence at the Festival International de Musica de Piracicaba, in Brazil, and regularly performs with the New York Chamber Soloists. Véronique thanks the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank for its generous support through the loan of the 1715 Dominicus Montagnana violin.

CRAIG NORTHEY rator” making albums and writing songs with friends such as Rosanne Cash, Gin Blossoms, Steven Page, Rob Baker (Tragically Hip), Glen Phillips, Wide Mouth Mason and Colin James. His association with comedy troupe Kids in the Hall has greatly influenced his parallel career in film and TV music composition. He appears weekly in the opening montage of Hockey Night in Canada’s Coaches Corner. STEVEN PAGE, VOCALS Steven was the lead singer and songwriter of the Barenaked Ladies from 1988 – 2009, one of Canada’s most enduring success stories (15 million albums sold, numerous Juno awards, two Grammy nominations, two Gemini awards). Recordings include The Vanity Project, Page One, A Singer Must Die (with Art of Time), and A Different Sort of Solitude. Steven headlined Art of Time’s Songbook 6 concert, and has composed music for four productions for the Stratford Festival. DOUGLAS PERRY, VIOLA Douglas was Artistic Director of Arraymusic, a founding member of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Artistic Administrator for the KW Symphony. He has been Principal Viola of the Santa Fe Opera, the Kitchener Waterloo Sym-

STEVEN PAGE phony and the Canadian Opera, has participated in numerous recordings and toured extensively. Douglas has performed with composers including Tan Dun, Bright Sheng and Gavin Bryars, and has produced or recorded with Dave Young, Phil Dwyer and Michel Lambert (Juno Award), Accordes String Quartet and Robert Occhipinti. JOSEPH PHILLIPS, BASS Joe Phillips started playing the guitar at 9, and later spent time playing in blues bars, Irish pubs and booze cans, followed by four years studying with renowned classical virtuoso Joel Quarrington. Joe can be found making music with artists as varied as Orchestra London, The Art of Time Ensemble, Via Salzburg Chamber Orchestra, Patricia O’Callaghan, songwriters Jenny Whiteley, Sarah Slean and John Southworth, Rita Chiarelli, jazz bassist/cellist/composer Andrew Downing, banjoist Jayme Stone and Franco-Ontarian fiddler Pierre Schryer. ROB PILTCH, GUITAR Rob’s career began at age 17, with the Bernie Piltch Quartet, the Ted Moses Quintet and then Blood, Sweat & Tears. Rob worked as a session player with artists including Kim Mitchell, Shirley Eikhardt, Guido Basso, and Rob McConnell. He recorded two albums in the ‘80s, Bells and Rob

RICK SACKS, DRUMS/PERCUSSION Rick Sacks is the Artistic Director of Arraymusic. He is a percussionist, composer and conductor. He performs with Art of Time, New Music Concerts, Aventa, Glass Orchestra, Evergreen Club Gamelan and Red Sky. Recent performances have been in Shanghai, Beijing, Copenhagen, Montreal, New York, Toronto and Ulaan Baatar. Rick won the 2010 Dora award for best sound design for Red Sky’s Tono. His latest work is for Roseneath Theatre’s The Never Ending Story.

STEPHEN SITARSKI, VIOLIN Stephen Sitarski enjoys an incredibly varied career as a violinist, and is a recognized conductor, adjudicator, teacher and music administrator. He has led the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony and Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, as well as orchestras in the United States and Europe. Sitarski is a founding member of Trio Laurier, and a frequent performer with Toronto’s acclaimed Art of Time Ensemble. He has performed countless television and film scores and has arranged music for the Emperor Quartet, Quartetto Gelato and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Sitarski is a faculty member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, and Toronto’s Glenn Gould School.
THE ARRANGERS BRYDEN BAIRD Bryden is currently Musical Director for Steven Page, and recently toured with the indie-pop chanteuse Feist. Composition and orchestration credits include the feature film ‘Gunless’, with Greg Keelor, Chantal Kreviazuk’s symphony tour, Jim Cuddy, Blue Rodeo and the Art of Time Ensemble. Television appearances have included Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and The Hour. He has performed with Michael Buble, the Temptations, Kris Kristofferson, Blue Rodeo, the Toronto Symphony, Sean Lennon, Ron Sexsmith, Sarah Harmer and Chantal Kreviazuk. SHELLY BERGER Shelley Berger has worked with a number of different artists including Diana Krall, Louis Bellson, Anita O’Day, Kenny Burrell, Herb Ellis, Lew Tabakin, Ernestine Anderson, Ruby Braff, Donald O’Conner, Mickey Rooney, Red Norvo, Nathaniel Dett Chorale, Jane Bunnett, Peter Erskine and Norma Winstone, Quartteto Gelato, Sarah Slean, Matt Dusk, The Toronto Mass Choir, David Clayton-Thomas, Sam & Dave, Martin Short, Chantal Kreviazuk, Loreena McKennitt, and Don Ross to name a few. Shelly has also released four CDs of original contemporary jazz music available on iTunes.
ROBERT CARLI Robert Carli scored his first feature film in 1998 and has since had the opportunity to work with some of the country’s finest filmmakers, in a variety of genres. He has composed music for over 30 films, movies of the week, and documentaries. His work has garnered five Gemini awards and numerous SOCAN Awards for domestic television. He performs regularly as saxophonist with a number of ensembles, including the Art of Time Ensemble, the Toronto Symphony and the National Ballet of Canada. ANDREW DOWNING Andrew Downing is a musician and composer living in Toronto. He performs primarily in the creative jazz scene, but also plays folk, world and classical music. He has written arrangements and compositions for Patricia O’Callaghan, the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, Toca Loca and The Gryphon Trio. His latest project was a collaboration with songwriter John Southworth called Easterween, and he is in the midst of writing a piece for banjo and chamber orchestra for Jayme Stone and members of Orchestra London. KEVIN FOX Kevin Fox is a revered multi-instrumentalist, sought-after arranger/composer and in-demand recording artist. He has composed

arrangements for the likes of Jim Cuddy and Justin Bieber, recorded with such artists as Celine Dion and Chantal Kreviazuk and performed with artists including Steven Page and Olivia Newton John. With the release of his third album, Set Right in 2011, Kevin as well continues to step into the spotlight as a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter in his own right. JONATHAN GOLDSMITH Jonathan Goldsmith is a Canadian musician, film composer and record producer. He has scored over a hundred films, and has received four Genie nominations and fifteen Gemini nominations for Best Original Score, winning four Gemini awards, as well as a British Academy of Film and Television Award (BAFTA). He has produced records for, among others, Bruce Cockburn, Sarah Slean, Jenn Grant, Martin Tielli, Hugh Marsh and Art of Time. Recent film and TV projects include Sarah Polley’s Take this Waltz, Don McKellar’s Michael: Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Julian Fellowes’ Titanic. He was a founding board member of Art of Time, and holds tenure as the resident pianist for the intergalactic cabaret chamber orchestra, Nick Buzz. JIM MCGRATH Jim McGrath is a Toronto-based composer and arranger best known for his film and television work. Recent credits include the hit CBC comedy/drama Republic of Doyle, the Kids in the Hall’s darkly comedic miniseries “Death Comes to Town” (co-writing with Craig Northey), as well as the award-winning series Degrassi, for which he received the 2006 Gemini Award for best original score for a dramatic series.
DAN PARR Dan’s most recent arrangements for Art of Time were for Cantabile: An Evening of Italian Music. Earlier this season, he arranged for Songbook 6 featuring Steven Page, and in 2011 he arranged the music for Art of Time’s production of The War of the Worlds, including the concert piece Herrmannthology. More recently, he conducted for Sarah Slean’s new CD and for the miniseries Titanic, and orchestrated the TV series Camelot and the feature film The Whistleblower. JOHN WELSMAN John Welsman is a composer of music for film and television whose credits include TV series Road to Avonlea, Franklin and Friends, My Friend Rabbit, and The Twilight Zone. Documentary films include West Wind – The Vision of Tom Thomson, and David Suzuki’s The Sacred Balance. Recent feature films include Nurse.Fighter.Boy, MODRA, and A Winter Tale. Welsman is a five-time Gemini winner for Best Original Score and Genie winner for Achievement in Music (for Nurse.Fighter.Boy). CAMERON WILSON Cameron Wilson is a violinist/composer currently residing in Vancouver. He is a member of the classical crossover piano trio Joe Trio, the gypsy jazz quartet Van Django, the Hard Rubber Orchestra, and Francophone-inspired Pastiche. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by numerous symphony orchestras and ensembles. He has collaborated with CBC storyteller Stuart Mclean on A History of Canada and I Remember Wayne and has recently co-written a film noir opera with playwright Kico Gonzalez Risso.
