GREETINGS FROM ROMAN BORYS “The art of interpretation is not to play what is written.” – Pablo Casals (1876 - 1973)
It is a uniquely human desire to search the past for greater meaning. It is also human to will the shape of our future. Chamber music, I believe, embraces both ambitions with equal enthusiasm. At one end of the Chamberfest spectrum is early music. A treasure trove of sacred and secular compositions, this vast body of work has been reimagined and absorbed by generations of musicians and listeners. At the other end is contemporary music, which in many cases is to be performed for the first time this summer. In either instance, and for every period in between, the musician – by any other name, an interpreter of the composer’s intent – draws on his or her knowledge, technical expertise, aesthetics, temperament, and mood to charge the music with life. Audiences, as witnesses to this nuanced kinetic process, receive and reflect the intimate energy of the performance. The resulting experience, as any Chamberfest enthusiast will declare, is transformative. Which brings me to the heart of our 2015 Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival: those bold departures and original readings that shape chamber music as a living art. This summer’s focus is on Franz Joseph Haydn, “father of the string quartet,” whose revolutionary techniques have now defined chamber music for over two centuries. Hosted by Geoff Nuttall, first violin of the St. Lawrence String Quartet – with performances by the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Calidore String Quartet, Afiara Quartet, Cecilia String Quartet, Quatuor Danel, and Eybler Quartet – these thirteen concerts and learning opportunities trace Haydn’s massive influence, from Mozart and Beethoven through to the modern era of composition. To know Haydn is to understand why Chamberfest exists in its current incarnation. Beyond Haydn, we offer for the first time a suite of spectacular theatrical experiences: four visions of the state-of-the-art in small ensemble collaboration and music-making.
Giovanni at an actual wedding reception, where you are the guest and the performance takes place around you. Montreal scratch DJ Kid Koala’s Nufonia Must Fall Live! blends puppetry, live video, and string quartet in a delightful silent-film romance about an obsolete robot who falls in love with a human girl. And Spell to Bring Lost Creatures Home – by Canada’s representative at Venice Biennale, visual artist Shary Boyle, and award-winning songwriter Christine Fellows – uses sound, lyric, image, and light to tell stories that reconnect us with a sense of shared history and common humanity. Further developing our theme of re:generations are the Danish String Quartet – four brilliant young musicians who are equally virtuosic in their accounts of the core Romantic repertoire and of Scandinavian folk music – and unique coalitions at both ends of the festival: the Canadian National Brass Project, a newly-formed large ensemble of principal brass from major orchestras across Canada, and the California and Montreal Guitar Trios in concert for our closing night performance. Our exploration of new directions aside, throughout Chamberfest 2015 you will find a fulsome serving of core repertoire featuring brilliant interpretations driven by the essence of Casals’ insightful words. The incomparable Augustin Dumay returns to Chamberfest with a robust account of the great violin sonatas. Les Voix Baroques delivers a faithful revival of Henry Purcell’s 1689 opera, Dido and Aeneas. And Canada’s Romantic virtuoso, André Laplante, performs an ample programme of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Liszt. And of course, there is so much more. Every Chamberfest has its own distinct character and allure. I invite you to explore its many offerings and create your own remarkable festival experience. To all generations of music lovers, I bid you welcome! Roman Borys Artistic Director, Ottawa Chamber Music Society
Illusions, produced by Gryphon Trio and Ensemble contemporain de Montréal, is a multimedia tour de force that immerses audiences in the dazzling and often surreal realm of the carnival midway. #UncleJohn presents its radical reimagining of Mozart’s Don

As a court musician at the remote Esterházy family estate, Franz Joseph Haydn was isolated from other composers and musical trends. In his own words, he was “forced to become original,” and this permitted him the freedom to transform music from what it had been to what it could be. Rob Kapilow sets the stage for this summer’s Haydnfest with a captivating overview of “Papa” Haydn’s secluded world: its music, philosophy, art, politics, and history.

One of a new wave of versatile emerging ensembles – certainly “one of the best quartets before the public today” (Washington Post) – Danish String Quartet is equally virtuosic in its accounts of the core repertoire and of Scandinavian folk music. Tonight’s concert promises an innovative blend of both, with informed readings of Beethoven (String Quartet No. 1 in F major, Op. 18, No. 1), Schnittke (String Quartet No. 3), and Nielson (String Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 13), followed by selections from DSQ’s new recording, Wood Works, as an encore.
