SURGERY NEWS Fall / Winter 2019
Issue No. 4
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Welcome to OU Surgery's newsletter, summing up a successful 2019. Each year outshines the past year, so I am looking forward to an exciting 2020. The Inaugural Russell and Ruthann Postier Lectureship in Pancreas Surgery was a highlight of 2019. Dr. Keith Lillemoe, Chair of Massachusetts General Hospital Surgery Department, was a fantastic visiting professor kicking off our newest departmental tradition. It was a great day of learning, taking time to nod to the past while looking forward to the future of OU surgery highlighted by our surgical resident presentations. I would like to thank all faculty, alumni and friends who contributed to the fund, which will allow us to honor the legacy of Dr. Russell and Ruthann Postier and their commitment to Oklahoma's surgical education. In this issue, we introduce new faculty and staff, highlight awards our faculty have earned and present a glimpse into the tremendous research contributions of our residents, surgeons, and scientists. With all this hard work, we also enjoyed some fun moments together. I hope you all enjoyed some friendly competition and getting to know each other's families at the annual departmental softball party. Also, celebrating the holiday season together with dinner and dancing. I CONGRATULATE all of you for a very successful 2019. Our mission in education, research and clinical growth continue to thrive and grow. I appreciate your hard work and a job well done!

Russell and Ruthann Postier Lectureship in Pancreas Cancer
Dr. Postier believed in educating the young surgeons of tomorrow. Prior to retiring, he wanted to leave a legacy that would ensure all residents and medical students receive a robust curriculum, excel in research, and provide meaningful, life-changing patient care. This led to the Russell G. Postier, M.D., Surgical Enrichment Endowed Fund and the creation of the Russell and Ruthann Postier Lectureship in Pancreas Cancer. New Faculty
Under the direction of Dr. Ryan O. Kennedy and Dr. Harold Burkhart, the adult ECMO program has completed 1 year of activity (Oct 2018- 2019). 15 patients were cannulated in total. We have completed multiple training sessions for ECMO specialists and are beginning to have OUMC nurses sit pump independently. We have added two additional providers with ECMO experience, bringing our total providers to seven. In addition, Cameron Butler joined as ECMO Coordinator in July.
Re-Verification Adult Level 1 Trauma Center The OUMC Adult Level 1 Trauma Center underwent its 7th successful verification visit by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma site reviewers. The trauma center was first verified in 2001. The trauma program has grown over the past 10 years from 3129 registry patients and 2287 trauma team activations to 4618 registry patients and 3895 trauma team activations. At the time of the site survey, the program has also grown to 6 full time surgeons who provide trauma, surgical critical care and emergency general surgery coverage. An additional two surgeons, Dr. Quang Blair and Dr. Mary Margaret Brandt, have joined the division. This team provides comprehensive care of the trauma patients from admission to post-discharge followup. They are truly a dedicated group of talented physicians who provide the safety net for injured and severely ill surgical patients in Oklahoma.

Surgeons in the Spotlight
Mother / Daughter battle cancer for a second time The American Cancer Society states that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. But what are the odds of a mother/daughter being diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time......on the same day?! Mom Milly was first diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1960's. She had a mastectomy followed by cobalt, a form of radiation therapy. Milly describes the surgery as radical, pulling out muscle from her arm. It took a couple of years to regain use of her arm. Joyce was by Milly's side and described her as a fighter. Milly pushed through and lived cancer-free for the next 55 years. In 1998, daughter Joyce was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thanks to the American Cancer Society, Joyce was able to receive treatment at OU Medical Center through a special program, free of charge and performed by students. Like her mother, Joyce was also a fighter. A few days after her mastectomy, Joyce ordered a green house and put it together. Cancer-free as well, Joyce followed her mother's lead and 'kept moving' living life. They did everything together including living together and going to their yearly check-ups. On their recent check-up, both mom and daughter were diagnosed with breast cancer...again. Dr. Teresa Shavney, who has been diagnosing and treating breast cancer for over 30 years, treated the mom/daughter duo. She scheduled both for surgery. They were in and out in a day. Milly and Joyce are each other's support system and together they are making it through! Cobalt Therapy used in the 1960's produced beams of gamma rays directed into the patient's body to kill tumor tissue. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobalt_therapy Biozorb is a treatment used during a lumpectomy. The spiral shape device, the size of a walnut, is placed where the tumor was. The device is eventually absorbed by the body, but the clips remain. https://www.thehealthjournals.com/biozorb-leaves-mark-breast-cancer/
Challenge Coins & Paying It Forward You may recognize Mr. Pfannenstiel and his big white Jeep. He's an Uber and Lyft driver in central Oklahoma. He's also a veteran, having served 10 years in the US Marine Corps. It was while in the service, that he came across some Challenge Coins. The coins were used in WWI as a way to communicate from unit to unit. They were later adapted to become awards based on excellence in service. When Pfannenstiel left the military, he went on a spiritual search. He asked God for guidance and to open his heart however God wanted to use him. Pfannenstiel soon found himself placed next to people who were in need. He would speak the word of God and give them a coin. Driving around the city carrying out these simple acts of kindness have allowed Pfannenstiel to share the word and make a difference in so many lives. This also brought him to meet Dr. Raines. Pfannenstiel had suffered from diverticulitis. When it caught up with him again, he drove to OU Medical Center Edmond where he met Dr. Raines. On the day of surgery, Dr. Raines was in the middle of describing the dangers of surgery when Pfannenstiel interrupted him. He said he was aware of the formalities for legal reasons but was good with God and would love Dr. Raines not matter the outcome. Pfannenstiel proceeded to hand Dr. Raines an Armor of God coin. A bit taken back, Dr. Raines took the coin and placed it in his pocket throughout the surgery. He keeps it there now any time he operates and works with patients. It serves as his reminder of faith, support and strength. Dr. Raines has begun giving his patients Challenge Coins.
