Proud to be a Guilderland Resident 3

Notes from Supervisor Runion’s Office The folks at Our Towne Guilderland recently asked me to do a little column in their paper to help keep residents updated on things that are going on in the community. I’ve agreed to give it a try, so in this and future issues of the paper, I’ll be letting you know some of the things that are happening in Guilderland. I hope you find the information useful. Basement and back-yard flooding has hit residents in a couple of areas of the Town pretty significantly in recent years, and we have initiated an effort to respond to the problem. I have asked the Town Board to approve retaining an engineering firm to perform detailed engineering studies of the McKownville area, and of the Blackberry Estates area off of Curry Road to provide us with a full understanding of what the issues are, what steps need to be taken to remedy the problem, and to provide an informed estimate of the costs involved. I will also be asking the Board to approve a bonding resolution that would allow the Town to begin the actual work that would be involved in resolving the problem, starting with McKownville, where the situation has been a problem for many years. Flooding in the area along Western Avenue in front of Stuyvesant Plaza is another issue that has confronted the Town for a long time. Working with a number of other people and organizations- Assemblyman McEneny’s office, the NY State Transportation Department, the NY State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and Stuyvesant Plaza, we have been able to devise a plan that will provide a meaningful reduction in the frequency and severity of flooding at the location (based on “average” weather, whatever that may be), and will also allow for the area around the body of water once used as the McKownville Reservoir to be converted into a pocket park. In the area of communications, we have just enhanced the Town website to add the capacity for Town residents to access video of Town Board meetings on-line. We have a grant application pending that we filed jointly with the Village of Altamont that will, if approved, allow for even further expansion of our ability to offer video-on-demand of the meetings of major Town boards. Residents unfamiliar with the Town website should take a few minutes to check it out, since it has experienced significant upgrades over the past year or two. Log on to www.townofguilderland.org for a wealth of information about current events and the workings of various parts of Town government. A wide range of forms are available in downloadable form, you can sign up to be included in e-mail contact lists for a variety or Town events, and there are links to a broad range of local and regional resources available to you. On the environmental front, I have determined that the issues surrounding the operation and future prospects of the Rapp Road landfill, not to mention its negative effect on the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, are matters too significant to be ignored. I have therefore received the Town Board’s approval to send trash from the Guilderland Transfer Station to the Colonie Town Landfill instead of to the Rapp Road facility. This change will not increase the Town’s solid waste disposal costs, and I feel that the change is an environmentally responsible action. A summertime update wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t remind you about some of the great things that Guilderland has to offer at this time of year. Western Turnpike Golf Course is enjoying another busy season, and continues to offer an interesting and challenging golfing experience at a moderate cost, especially for Town residents, who enjoy a discounted rate, even as we continue to operate the course at no cost to Town taxpayers. Our Summer Recreation Program continues to experience a strong response from residents, as it has for many years. We have a very limited number of openings still available for our programs, so call the Parks Office at 456-3150 if you’re interested. The Town Pool, the GRAB Barn, and the hiking trails in Tawasentha Park and the Pine Bush Preserve are busy this summer, as usual. Stop by and give them a look. Also, remember that every Thursday at 7:30 The Guilderland Performing Arts Center is offering its 30th season of free concerts in Tawasentha Park. That’s quite a bit that’s going on here in Guilderland this summer. I hope that you found reading this update worthwhile. If you have ideas on how to improve it, please call Town Hall at 356-1980 and ask to talk to my office. We are always interested in learning what our residents are thinking.

Kenneth Runion, Town Supervisor

Check what Community Caregivers services can do for you. Our volunteers can drive disabled, elderly, and non-driving persons for medical appointments, visits to family in nursing homes, etc. They can either accompany a client who needs assistance or do the shopping for such items as food, prescriptions, or personal items. Caregivers Respite provides a caring presence so individuals and families who care for someone dementia, a chronic illness or in endof-life care can enjoy a break from their caregiving responsibilities.

They’ll do chores and laundry – minor home repairs, carrying packages, trimming hedges, cleaning flower beds, planting, raking, mowing, organizing closets, unpacking boxes. PLUS – Referrals to other agencies, visitations to homebound people, telephone assurance and assistance with bill paying, completing forms.

Call us to learn what YOU can do for Community Caregivers when you join us to give your neighbors a helping hand.

They will prepare and deliver simple meals for individuals and families temporarily unable to provide for themselves, including delivering food from local food pantries. They can perform light housekeeping such as dusting, vacuuming and straightening up as needed – weekly, biweekly, or monthly.

“THE YOGA

The most common computer issue that brings customers into our store is virus infection. Many times, people attempt to ‘remove’ or ‘clean’ the infection themselves and only end up making it worse. Most of these issues are caused by software labeled “Rogue Security Programs”. They pose as official or legitimate antivirus & antispyware programs, but in reality they ARE viruses & spyware! Usually they appear without notice to the computer user. An icon placed on the desktop or a popup window from the system tray (near the clock) indicates that “an infection has been detected!” and encourages you to take immediate action by scanning your system with the ‘antivirus’ or ‘antispyware’. The problem is that the “scan results” indicating that you’re infected with multiple viruses is bogus. The program will direct you to remove the threats by paying $69.99 for full functionality of the program. Doing so will not only be the fastest $69.99 you’ve ever lost, but it will put your credit card number at risk of theft, and your computer will STILL be infected! These Rogue Security Programs often have a simple naming scheme such as “Antivirus 2009”. Some look an awful lot like portions of Windows and may even claim to be part of Windows (such as “WinAntivirus 2009”). To be very clear, Microsoft never includes antivirus software built-in to Windows and Windows will never tell you that you’re infected, since it does not have that functionality.

WAY”

Most commonly, the actual infection started silently in the background. Perhaps you downloaded some infected free music from a file sharing program such as LimeWire, or perhaps you clicked on an ad on a website. Alternatively, you may have just stumbled upon a website that infected your computer WITHOUT your interaction at all. There are multiple ways of getting these infections. Here are some keys to keeping your computer safe: 1) MAKE SURE your computer is current with both Windows and antivirus software updates. Visit http://update.microsoft.com for Windows updates, and be sure to update your security software with the newest virus & spyware definitions at least weekly.

YOGA For Beginners Weds 9:30 am & Thurs. 7:00 pm FALL SESSION BEGINS SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2ND & 3RD

2) DO NOT use file sharing programs such as LimeWire. Free music sounds great but you’ll pay later to have the infection professionally removed from your computer.

Back To School

Shop with us & SAVE $$$... ...Consign with us & make $$$!

3) DO NOT click on any window that indicates ‘you’re infected’ unless you’re 100% sure it’s from your installed security software.

www.PolkaDotsConsignment.com Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri 10-5, Sat 10-3,

Open later some evenings-call in advance.

4) Visit only reputable websites – ones you’re heard about from others. So-called ‘warez’ websites that offer illegal copies of software, and those offering free screensavers & background wallpapers are to be avoided. If you do find yourself infected with one of these rogue security programs your best bet is to disconnect the computer from the Internet right away and bring it to a trusted local computer service shop. Leaving it connected to the Internet will allow the rogue program to download more viruses & spyware, which could destroy your data.

Techniconsults Computers at 1775 Western Ave can clean out your computer & usually recover your data, often for less than $160 and usually within one to two business days. “Big Box” stores will usually charge a minimum of $200 just to look at your computer (even more to then fix it), and usually with a couple weeks turnaround time. Martial Arts Benefits Kids by Bob Esposito Capital Northeast Martial Arts

As the owner of a Martial Arts School, I am often asked the question, “How can I or my child benefit from martial arts training? Typically, my answer starts off with, “it depends followed by a few short questions. I can’t give the same answer to everybody. I don’t know of any activity, program or sport that offers such a variety of internal and external benefits regardless of age, physical and athletic ability, and mental tenacity. Here are a few: Physical Fitness. Simply put, martial arts classes are great physical exercise that work every muscle of the body. Improvements in gross motor skills, balance, strength, flexibility, agility, cardiovascular endurance and increased energy levels can often be attributed to the physical training of martial arts.

Life Skills and Character Development. Martial Arts classes can enhance character values and life skills that are being taught at home. Self respect and respect for others, courtesy, integrity, self-control, discipline, patience, goal setting, perseverance are traits inherent to martial arts training. Confidence and self esteem are achieved through encouragement and attainment of short and long term goals. Self Defense. Along with the basic skills of defending oneself or another individual, good martial arts programs will teach students about conflict resolution without the use of physical force. Increased self-confidence and the knowledge that the skills are there if needed translate to a more confident person. Fun Safe Family Activity. Because martial arts offers programs for different ages, Moms, Dads, and Kids can all participate in the activity. It’s a way for the entire family to share an interest and stay connected. For those looking for an activity for after school or work, the Martial Arts provides a fun, safe and wholesome environment where people can make new friends and get the exercise they need to lead a healthy life while at the same time learn a valuable skill. Bob Esposito is the owner of Capital Northeast Martial Arts. His school is located at 1811 Western Ave. in Guilderland. He currently holds the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and 3rd Degree Black Belt in Hapkido. Mr. Esposito holds an Accounting degree from Siena College and a MBA from Russell Sage College. For information on any of their programs, call 518-452-3065. 10

Grimm Book Could Change Your Life! Mark Grimm Communications 356-4865 XXX NBSLHSJNN DPN t NBSL!NBSLHSJNN DPN Former TV news anchor/producer and Guilderland Town Board member Mark Grimm is convinced everyone can become a great speaker given the right training. He’s so certain of it, he wrote, Everyone Can Be A Dynamic Speaker: Yes, I Mean You! “While everyone recognizes the value of public speaking, just a small fraction of the public is exceptional at it,â€? says Grimm. “What a missed opportunity!â€? His practical and inspirational book is an easy read that demonstrates how better public speaking is the result of a strong focus on the audience, good preparation, training, experience, and confronting the anxiety that holds speakers back. Grimm’s thought-provoking and entertaining presentations make him a popular guest on the speaking circuit. His speaking training involves one-on-one sessions with large company CEO’s or sole proprietors, or group training of up to 150 people. “Awaken the inner power that lies within you,â€? says Grimm. “Read the book that really could change your life.â€? Reviews have been outstanding: “What an easy read. I just couldn’t put it down.â€? Or “It opened my eyes to a lot of things I haven’t thought of.â€? Or “I believe I can really do this now. Thanks for the inspiration and guidance!â€? View a brief TV interview on the book and read some excerpts at www.markgrimm.com. It makes a fantastic gift and the cost is just $13.89 (plus S & H)! Grimm’s ďŹ rm, Mark Grimm Communications, also helps clients get noticed by the media or deal with a communication crisis. Grimm has interviewed two U-S presidents, has appeared on Phil Donahue and CBS News, has been an analyst on most major area media outlets, and hosts a radio interview program, the Siena Alumni Connection (it airs Saturdays at 10 am and Sundays at 6 pm on WVCR-FM 88.3). He is also a Siena adjunct media professor. “My teaching at Siena and St. Rose has been very rewarding,â€? says Grimm. “I try to paint a ‘real world’ picture of the profession for students and give them candid career advice.â€? Student evaluations indicate they appreciate his eorts: “Professor Grimm was funny and interesting and had a lot of enthusiasm. He cares about us and teaching.â€? Another student wrote, “This class has taught me to be creative and daring.â€? If you’re interested in better public speaking, sophisticated media help, or want to sharpen your message, contact Mark for a no-obligation meeting.

Guilderland Martial Arts to Oer After-School Program Guilderland Martial Arts 2563 Western Avenue, Guilderland 518-690-1269 www.GuilderlandMartialArts.com Guilderland Martial Arts ďŹ rst opened in March of 2007. They out grew their location within the ďŹ rst year and moved to their current location at 2563 Western Avenue. Guilderland Martial Arts prides itself on oering family friendly Taekwondo training. “Martial Arts can be intimidating to someone who has never tried it.â€? says Master Robert Rice, “With our free trial lesson we feel we can ease these misgivings.â€? In keeping with their motto of “Family Taekwondo Trainingâ€? they keep the running of the business in the family as well. Master Rice, with the help of his sister Christine Clark, handles all of the day to day tasks of running the business. “Our own family members participate in the business, our kids assist in classes and our spouses help out whenever they can.â€? Beginning this fall Guilderland Martial Arts is happy to announce that they will be oering a Martial Arts based afterschool program (certiďŹ cation pending). “If you have school age children and both parents work outside the home you know the great need there is in our community for quality afterschool care.â€? says Master Rice “The great thing about our afterschool program is that it includes a full Taekwondo membership. The kids will have a daily Taekwondo class, including character development, as well as homework time, game time, arts & crafts, and free time. Master Rice holds a 4th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, he has taught math at Farnsworth Middle school for the last 3 Years and this fall will be teaching at Guilderland High School. Before moving to Guilderland in 2005 Master Rice ran a successful martial arts afterschool program and summer camp, as well as teaching Taekwondo classes in Westchester, NY. His teaching career also includes 7 years of teaching in Istanbul, Turkey at The Uskadar American Academy. Master Rice is married and has 3 sons; all four are black belts. Mrs. Clark has resided in Guilderland with her husband and 2 boys for 17 years and is a Purple Belt in Taekwondo. “If it was not for my brother beginning a school I would never have tried Taekwondo, I really enjoy taking classes, it has changed all aspects of my life and I see many positive changes in both of my sons since they began taking classes.â€? The school oers Summer Camps, School Break Camps, Grasshopper (age 4 & 5), Youth, Adult and Family Classes, as well as the new afterschool program. Q A ď Ť

with Sam Conti

Custom Refinishing

Q. What year did your business start? A. My business began in 1987. Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. I have always worked in the construction industry and decided to go out on my own after learning my trade. Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything speciďŹ c that they are always coming in for? A. Yes, I have several repeat customers in my commercial and residential business, my scope of work includes interior & exterior painting, pressure washing, drywall installation and ďŹ nishing, bathroom and kitchen remodeling and we specialize in aluminum and vinyl siding restoration. Q. Are you known for anything special? A. Yes, siding restoration, for the past 27 years I have been involved in warranty service for siding manufacturer’s including such companies as Alcoa, Alside, Norandex, Gen-Tec, Owens Corning and several others. Over the year’s these companies have merged and changed name’s several times. I have been trained to restore old

and dull looking siding to ďŹ nish that is actually better than the original ďŹ nish. The manufacturer’s continued to warranty the restored siding for the duration of the warranty some times for life depending on the manufacturer. The work we performed had to be of the highest standard. Q. What is the most common misconception about siding restoration? Most people think that you can’t paint siding, the truth is there is no better surface to paint than aluminum and vinyl (yes, I said vinyl) siding. The reason being is unlike wood or masonry surface’s there is no moisture content in siding therefore as long as the surface is properly cleaned prior to restoration the ďŹ nish holds up for years and years that is why I have no problem warranting my job’s. Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. My biggest challenge is ďŹ nding time to do all the work, completing jobs while at the same time going out and doing estimates to keep new job’s coming in. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. I’m a Guilderland Resident and enjoy living and working in the community. If I can oer any help on an upcoming project, please give me a call 852-6463.

Save the Dates “King of the Lions” is this Friday’s Disney Movie Wait a minute, it’s not “King of the Lions.” It’s “The Lion ___.” Well, in any event, the Guilderland Public Library’s Disney Family Friday movie at 7 pm on July 31, tells the story of a cute little lion cub who flees into exile and abandons his identity as the future King ... for a time, anyway. Kids will love the animation and the story, and adults will get a kick out of hearing the voiceover styling’s of Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Nathan Lane, Jeremy Irons (Jeremy Irons!), and other leading actors. (Extra credit if you can identify the voice of Banzai.)

This will be our first Pizza-and-a-Movie Night as, thanks to the generosity of Jeff and Jennie Heidbreder, owners of the Little Caesars at 1800 Western Avenue, there will be free Pizza Snacks!

This will be shown outdoors in the Community Literary Garden, weather permitting. (Rain place: the Helderberg Room.) So come on over, bring a lawn chair or a thick blanket to spread out on, and have a great time watching this fun Disney classic.

Dazzled by Dogs! Join us for a fun filled afternoon with the Dazzle Dogs, at 2 pm on Thursday July 30. This program is open to all, and is a chance to experience the wonder of this group of dogs who delight audiences with their exceptional talents. They dance, skirt obstacles, and perform amazing stunts you won’t quite believe.

A few upcoming events to make note of: •

Family Fun Day @ GPL will be Saturday, August 15, from 1 pm to 4 pm. It’s going to be even more fun than last year.

Champlain’s Dream, a discussion about this outstanding book, will be held on Monday, August 10, at 7:30 pm.

Teen Open Mic Night, your last chance to “Express Yourself @ Your Library,” will blow the doors off the Library at 6 pm on Wednesday, August 12.

The Happenings of 1969, a series of events focusing on this amazing year, slides into being the week of September 13, man. Details about these events are available at our website at www.guilpl.org.

Note: All Library events are free unless otherwise noted. The Guilderland Public Library is located at 2228 Western Avenue, Guilderland. Call 456-2400 x 12 for more information, or visit the Library's website at www.guilpl.org. Please email any comments you have about the Library or its programs to pio@guildpl.org. Please note that the Library is closed on Sundays during July and August.

Share Your “Sizzler” We love your reviews! The “Summer Sizzlers” reading club for adults is receiving enormous response across all genres. Some reviews are pithy, some edge right up to the 1,000 character max, but all are fun to read and delightfully insightful. If you have not yet taken part in the program, now’s the time! Just read a book and post your original review on the Summer Sizzlers page on our site at www,guilpl.org. You’ll automatically be entered for a chance to win a gift certificate from a great local restaurant including Ichiban, Athos, Sushui Tei, Metro 20 …. Drawings will be held on September 9. And be sure to read the reviews your neighbors have posted to the "Sizzlers" page. Who knows? You might see something that catches your interest and might become your next "best summer read."

WHO DO YOU TRUST WHEN SELLING YOUR RARE COINS AND RARE STAMPS? Roman Jewels has been a full service jeweler and coin dealer for 16 years in the City of Albany. We specialize in 18k Italian gold jewerly that we directly import from Italy and rare coins and stamps. But how do you know the dealer that you’re going to, is paying an honest price? We have noticed in the last few years, that what we call â€œďŹ‚y-by-nightsâ€?, have been popping up all over the tri-state area renting hotel rooms and paying much less than any other local dealers. How do you trust a person or company that’s going to be here 2-4 days and then never see them the rest of your life? We put one of these â€œďŹ‚y-by-nights/here today-gone tomorrowâ€? companies to the challenge. We brought in a silver dollar worth $1000. that a local dealer in the tri-city area would have paid $800 to $1000 for. They oered us $225. They oer less than 50% than your local dealers. Yet, the lines are long of people who don’t know any better because of the misleading words they put in their advertisement. They will advertise paying “up toâ€? $15,000 for a silver dollar but they don’t tell you that’s a price tag blue book value. You can purchase a blue book on line or at any book store. Please come in for a FREE evaulation of your rare coins, stamps and collectibles. We also buy unwanted or used gold. We pay more than (scrap gold) prices if we can evaulate each item by the piece. We don’t just melt every piece of beautiful or antique jewelry. It’s worth more that just scrap to us. Before you bring your gold anywhere else, at least let us evaluate it and give you a price at no cost. Also, please remember to NEVER EVER clean your coins and store them properly. We are open Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and staying open until 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays. We also make house calls on Sundays by appointment outside the city of Albany. Chico’s BBQ Celebrating 5th Birthday! Chico’s BBQ & Restaurant 2490 Western Ave., Guilderland 456-0940 www.ChicosBBQ.com Chico’s BBQ & Restaurant located at 2490 Western Avenue in Guilderland, across from Gade Farm, will be celebrating its 5th birthday this year. Reaching the 5 year milestone for any business is an achievement to be proud of. We would like to thank the community for their support. We have many regular customers who come back for a variety of reasons. The main reason is because of our signature Wings, along with our Smoked Pulled Chicken and Pork – not to mention our Smoked St. Louis and Baby Back Ribs! We have won several “BEST BARBECUE” awards over the past several years. We are known as the place to get Real Southern Style Barbecue. Our meats are brined (soaked in a seasoned bath), dry rubbed, then smoked with apple wood which gives it a unique flavor – right down to the bone. We also have four signature homemade barbeque sauce for those who love it “wet”! We have had such a terrific response to our Barbecue Sauce and Rub that we have had them bottled. Now our customers can pick up their favorite sauce and enjoy it at home too! We hope to have it in local stores soon. An important part of our success is our catering service. BBQ is a sure fire way to raise money for your organization. We have helped many groups organize their events and provide the best Chicken BBQ in the area. One of the reasons people choose us to help with their fundraising efforts is that our cooking units do not require a whole lot of space and they do not burn or damage the area we use. This makes for easy clean-up and more enjoyable event for everyone. We encourage our customers to let us know if things were not as expected so we can correct the problem immediately. We are always open to suggestions, comments or questions. We try new ideas everyday and encourage you to join our e-mail list or visit our website for daily specials, holiday specials and menu selections. We are proud to be a Guilderland business and thank the community for choosing Chico’s!
