Message from the Chamber...
Hello Our Towne Readers! Happy Mother’s Day to all of you! I hope everyone is enjoying the lovely weather, grass, trees, and sunshine. The nice weather is bringing lots of folks to the chamber offices for directories, maps, and business and community information. Our new offices in STAR Plaza are open 8:30-4:30 and take full advantage of the exposure of a retail space to promote local businesses and community information. We have some great things planned for the next few months in Guilderland! June 11 is the Chamber’s 38th annual dinner and community awards ceremony at Pinehaven Country Club. At this dinner, the Town of Guilderland, The Chamber, the Guilderland Hamlet Association and McKownville Neighborhood Association present awards to some of the “best of” in Guilderland. Best place to work, best new construction, and more…..even a “green” category this year! This event is open to the public and you can find more information soon on the Guilderland Chamber website, including who are the award recipients. Thanks to our sponsors like NBT Bank, Stuyvesant Plaza, Maynard O’Connor Smith Catalinotto, CDPHP and Capital Communications FCU, we are able to make the ticket price for this event even lower than last year, AND we have local comedian Erick James as our host! July 20-25-Restaurant Week is back and boy do we have some great restaurants here in Guilderland! Participants so far this year include Mezza Notte, The Cider House, Hana, Siver Hills, Peaches, BFS, and Aromi D’Italia, and it is still early. Restaurant week will include Guilderland, Altamont and Voorheesville establishments, and the $18.03 priced menus will be on www.tasteofguilderland. com by early July. Stay tuned for this one! We also have plenty going on at the chamber for our members, including our Women’s Business, Small Business, and Networking Events. Please check our calendar page on our website. We are also still running our new member special until the end of May, so if you know a business that wants local exposure, networking opportunities, or needs health insurance and other discounts, tell them now is the time! Have a great May!

The Guilderland Public Library
Increasing Service in a Dynamic World
Increased patron visits and circulation, more computer-use sessions than ever before, Storytime attendance in record numbers, and reference staff always busy answering patrons’ questions. The cause of these increased demands does not matter; what matters is that the Guilderland Public Library was there to meet them. This extract from our Annual Report provides you, our patrons, highlights of the many events and changes that 2008 brought to your Library. The Annual Report also serves as a report card of sorts, as we use measure our progress against goals set in our Strategic Long Range Plan. From Community and Cultural Activities to Technology, here are just some of the accomplishments of 2008:
Technology: User-Friendly Website: In order to improve service to our patrons online, the Library launched a redesigned website that’s organized according to patron interests. Now by going to www.guilpl.org, adults, teens, and children can directly access content tailored to their needs.

Playaways: These mini digital audio players with a book preloaded proved to be immediately popular. (Think of it as a pre-loaded iPod featuring your favorite book.) All patrons need to do is turn it on and listen! Downloadable Books and Videos: Patrons can now download hundreds of digital audio books, eBooks and videos to their home computer, mp3 players and iPods right from our website.
Online Summer Reading Club Signup: Making the SRC signup process Internet based made it easier for parents to get their children involved in this vital, educational support program.
Community and Cultural Activities: Putting Back Issues of The Altamont Enterprise Online: After a year’s worth of work by Library staff and support personnel, a century of the Altamont Enterprise is now available through the Library’s website. Accessible to anyone with an Internet connection, this project transformed fragile, primary-resource material into a fully searchable online resource. It’s proven a boon to serious and casual researchers alike. “Selected Shorts” at GPL: The Big Read is an annual event that inspires reading. The title for 2008 was Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Age of Innocence. Isaiah Sheffer, host of national Public Radio’s “Selected Shorts,” and Patricia Kalember, star of the “Sisters” television series, came to the Library and read from Wharton’s novel. It was an extraordinary event that played to a packed house in the Helderberg Room. Museum Passes: The Library expanded one of its most popular offerings: the Museum Pass program. The Adirondack Museum and the Basketball Hall of Fame are just two of the latest additions where Guilderland library card holders can get free or reduced admission.
I s a i a h S h e f f e r , h o s t o f N P R ’s “Selected Shorts,” read excerpts from The Age of Innocence at the Library in April as part of The Big Read.

Learning Issues: English as a Second Language Grant-Funded Programs: The Library took advantage of a number of grant opportunities. Notable among these was “The American Dream Starts @ Your Library provided by the Dollar General corporation. The Library was one of just 34 across the nation to capture this grant, which funded an increase in literacy services and materials for adult English language learners. WAMC radio broadcast a special feature about the grant. Programs for Tweens: The Library appointed a Librarian to meet the programming and services needs of youth ages 9 to 12, No longer children but not quite teens, these young people now have a Librarian who is responsive to them.
Health and Wellness: Consumer Health Information: From Medicare Counseling and Gluten Sensitivity Seminars, to Red Cross Blood Drives and Mammography Van visits, over a dozen health-related programs were held at the Library to ensure members of the community have access to current health information and select wellness services.
Supportive Services: Parenting Programs: In cooperation with the Cornell Cooperative Extension Albany County, the Library hosted an innovative program for parents and parents-to-be. The presentation covered topics such as bond with baby, building baby brain power, creating good habits, and more. VideoEye: Library patrons who have impaired vision (or who just want to get a better look at that really tiny type in a magazine ad) can now take advantage of the VideoEye, a video device that uses a camera to magnify text and objects onto a computer monitor. Homebound Services: Delivery of books and other Library materials to our homebound and older adult patrons doubled during 2008. This ensures that lack of mobility does not mean loss of Library services.
Business Activities and Assistance: Small Business Series: Teaming with the University at Albany Small Business Development Center and the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce, the Library held a series of Small Business Workshops designed to help current businesses or people who were considering a business start-up.
Easy Reading. A staff member demonstrates the ease with which patrons can use the VideoEye to magnify difficult-to-see text.
Special Events: The Library is noted for its author events, and 2008 was no exception. In July, author and historian Joseph E. Persico spoke about his latest work on Franklin Roosevelt, and the year closed with a very special appearance by Will Moses, folk artist and great-grandson of world-famous artist Grandma Moses.
Joseph E. Persico, author of Franklin & Lucy, spoke at the Library about the complex relationship between Franklin Roosevelt and Lucy Mercer.
The complete Annual Report will be available on the Library website May 15. Please go to www.guilpl.org/about/annualreport to download. Paper copies will be available at the Library. To Advertise in the Our Towne Guilderland Monthly Shopper, Please Call (518)356-3898

Q A ď Ť
Q. What year did your business start? A. Seinberg & Son started in 1996, after I had worked in the printing industry for about 7 years. I began the company out of my home in the Village of Altamont when I found there was need in the area for Macintosh support. I started out helping printing companies but quickly expanded to state agencies, schools, home users, home businesses and many creative professionals. The real key is that I always go to the client location and fix things on the spot. There’s never a need to lug your equipment to me. Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. I really enjoy solving problems and as computers have become a bigger and bigger part of our lives, those problems have become bigger too. Who could have imagined a few years ago that most people would have multiple computers and networks in their homes? Who could have seen how important e-mail and the Web would become? For many people today, their computer is their main communication device with the world. Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for? A. The last few years have been good for Macintosh users as Apple is in great shape and introducing exciting and useful products on a regular basis. As things have moved from desktop towers to laptops, iPhones, and iPods, our services have grown and changed to meet those demands. At any given time, my company has 200-300 regular clients who need everything from help setting up new systems to assistance troubleshooting ongoing problems.
With Michael Seinberg
Seinberg & Son
Macintosh Consultants, LLC
Q. Are you known for anything special? A.Over the years, the company has become known for fast service, reasonable hourly rates well below retail prices and the ability to work with both old and brand new equipment. I have clients who rely on computers as old as 10 years or more and in many cases, I can keep them running. I’ve also done a lot of work getting Macs and PCs to work together smoothly, something not easy to do. And finally, I have become an expert in setting up, upgrading and troubleshooting all manner of network issues from wired and wireless to DSL, cable modems, and routers. Q. What hours are you open? A. The company is open Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 and is reachable via cell at 281-4282, landline 861-8076, e-mail mseinber@nycap.rr.com, and on the web at www.seinbergandson.com. Until recently, the company has kept a low profile and most new business comes in via word of mouth. That’s always a real compliment in that my current clients are happy enough to recommend the company to friends.
Q. What do you love most about the business? A. After 13 years in business, I think my favorite part of the job is the amazing variety of issues, problems and people I come in contact with. One day I could be out in Chatham tuning up a computer and the next I’ll be in Lake George setting up a new system and by Friday I’ll be around the block in Altamont recovering data from a crashed system. It’s never boring and my clients are some of the most interesting, creative people you’d ever want to meet.
To Advertise in the Our Towne Guilderland Monthly Shopper, Please Call (518)356-3898
Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. I guess, when all is said and done, I just want people to know that if you are a Macintosh user, I would like to help you with any questions or problems you might have. I’m not perfect, and I don’t have all the answers, but after working with Apple products since 1977, you can bet I’ll know where to find what you need. And most of all, I want people to know that we come to you and we work to accommodate your schedule. Our motto is Fix it Where It Lives.

Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. I had been a social worker for 15 years and came to the realization that I just didn’t want to do that as a profession any longer. Knitting had been a hobby of mine for several years, and having a shop of some sort had been a goal of mine for some time as well. A few days before my last day as a social worker, I discovered this shop was for sale and decided to pursue the possibility of being able to purchase it. Q. What do you love most about the business? A. I love teaching people a new skill that they also come to love; helping people with problems they have with their projects; and seeing the finished projects my proud customers bring in to have m me photograph and put o on my blog. I also love tthat customers come in and say how homey aand comfortable it is aat the shop. That had been a goal of mine and b now many customers n lilike to come in just to sspend time knitting or ccrocheting.

BOARD OF EDUCATION NAMES NEW PRINCIPAL OF GUILDERLAND HIGH SCHOOL
SAVE THE DATE: MOTHERS’ DAY MELODIES Just a reminder that we’re having a very special Mothers’ Day Concert here at the Library on Sunday, May 10, at 2 pm. Soprano Rose Hargrave, contralto Lorraine Girol Lewis, tenor Lee Odell, and Michael Clement will entertain and enthrall with an eclectic mix of music from Oratorio to Broadway.
GUILDERLAND, NY—At its meeting on April 28, 2009, the Guilderland Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Brian McCann to the position of Guilderland High School Principal, effective immediately. McCann, who has been the acting principal of the school since September, previously served as an assistant principal at the high school for the past seventeen years.
This event is part of the Library’s Second Sunday Concert Series, which for the past several years has been providing musical relief to late-winter Sundays. This special Mothers’ Day concert extends the series into the spring. We hope you’ll join us for this fun afternoon.
“Brian McCann’s contributions to our high school have earned him the respect and affection of students, staff, and parents,” said Superintendent of Schools John McGuire. “His leadership is characterized by vision, communication, respect, and relationships of trust.”
Note: These events are free. The Guilderland Public Library is located at 2228 Western Avenue, Guilderland. Call 456-2400 x 12 for more information, or visit the Library’s website at www. guilpl.org. Please e-mail any comments you have about the Library or its programs to pio@guilpl. org.
“He has established a positive climate throughout the building as a solid foundation upon which to build,” he added. McCann is a graduate of SUNY Brockport, where he received a bachelor’s degree in history, and of SUNY Oswego, where he earned a master’s degree in educational administration. He will receive an annual salary of $118,275.

We have two special dogs,
Freckles and Abby, that are in desperate need of a good home. They are 7-8 yr old spayed females and UTD on shots. They are gentle, friendly, and are great with children! The ideal home would be one in which they can stay together and have a small fenced yard in which to play. Their family performs missionary work and unexpectedly need to leave for Africa. Please contact Lynda at (518) 869-0303 or ldsphoto@gmail.com.
